Jacob uttered a timid thanks, and Gina smiled and shrugged wordlessly. It wasn’t a problem. It was just something that needed to be heard, and needed to be said. Some kids had no confidence in themselves, and if the same mantra was repeated multiple times, maybe they’d start believing in it. They arrived at the office of the headmistress, and Jacob’s mother rushed past, quite rudely brushing her off.
“You’re welcome,” Gina breathed, acid at the edge of her tone. People like these were impossible. It was a pity that this was the kind of family the kid came from.
Jacob fought his mom’s attempt to brush him away from her, and kindly thanked her, asking if he’d see her around.
Gina opened her mouth to answer when his mother spoke-up again, but Jacob brushed her off and reiterated the question. Gina shot a look at Jacob’s mother.
“Gargoyles are spirits of protection,” Gina spoke after her abruptly, “Put upon the roofs of churches to keep foul things away.”
Given that bit of information, should she show his parents to the door, her tone suggested? Gina rubbed her forehead with her hands. It was an age-old argument that had been around as long as she had. When her brown eyes shifted back towards Jacob, they had returned to their kind, glimmering look.
“Of course you will,” she assured the boy, bowing lightly, “I get around a lot, so I guarantee we’ll run into each other. But, if happenstance run-ins aren’t your fancy-” Gina rattled off her room number, before assuring him, “You can hunt me or my roomie down. We’re both pretty chill.”
