The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

”An everybody hang out.” Kealey said, ”The Full Circle doesn’t discriminate one way or another. You‘ll see that a lot around here.”
Kealey shook her head and laughed when Nate pointed out that it was lucky people like her were around to make up for people like him who didn’t feel like they wanted to make a difference.
”I don’t know how much of a difference I actually make, but I try.” she said simply. ”And we all have our parts to play. I’d be willing to bet you make more of a difference than you think.”
He seemed interested in the Oasis she spoke about, and Kealey grinned, ”Ever hear of Xavior’s sister school for the Gifted?”
"Well then, I should have said I doubt I make a 'good' difference," he joked. He sometimes wondered if he would make a good Robin Hood, but determined he would have to steal more to cover charity and living expenses, so he decided it was easier not getting caught being selfish.
Stephen did his best to keep well versed in whatever goings-on made it into the news, and Xavier School sounded like a name he came across. He mainly came across it in speculation articles connecting the school to possible mutant activities. This girl seemed to have several mutant-friendly areas to her FourSquare profile. "Not to be intrusive, but... are you a... or, I mean, would you happen to be a mutant?" Stephen could not hide his uncertainty; he had trained his emotional control, but this was one of his first conversations with a possible fellow mutant. "I mean, if you are, that's fine. I mean, it's great. For you!" I should really calm down; otherwise, I might as well be telling her I'm a mutant. An awkward, awkward mutant.

Hm. Nate’s response to Kealey’s words was more telling than he knew. He doubted he could make any kind of good difference. He’d also identified himself as a rogue, but here he sat, chatting amiably. He’d also helped Kealey with the books she’d dropped. There were also his emotions, Kealey stared at the man a moment, eyebrows knitted together then she shrugged, ”I’ll bet somewhere deep down, you’ve got a heart of gold. It just hadn’t had a chance to shine yet.” It might have sounded silly or cliché, but it was the best the empathy could do for the moment.
Moving on, Kealey had to giggle, just a little, at how uncomfortable Nate got when he asked her whether or not she was a mutant. ”Yup.” she said with a smile.
”Ever hear of a empath?” she asked, ready to gage Nate’s reaction. No matter how well a conversation might be going, dropping the bomb about her powers always generated a reaction.
Stephen could not help but laugh at the sheer sweetness of this girl. "You are a corny gal, you know that? It's nice though. That boyfriend of yours is a lucky guy." Deep down, it was always nice to see others happy when happiness is a luxury in ones life.
The word "empath" caused the color to flush from Stephen's face. He may be able to hide his emotions or fake them, but they do still exist, and unfortunately, this girl had access to them like they were being tweeted at her. Short of a cop, this girl could have been the worst person for him to strike up a chat with. Trying to hide his shock and concern, (not that there was a point,) he answered, "Yeah, I know about empaths. Are you telling me you know how I'm feelin' right now?" He laughed nervously, thinking about the only positive: she could have been a mind-reader. See? Things were looking up for him.

“Heh. Yeah.” Kealey laughed nervously. Yup, Shin was a lucky guy. He had a sometimes neurotic, overly emotional girlfriend who occasionally pushed the emotions of half of New York into his head. Okay, maybe the last part had only happened once, but still, in Kealey’s opinion, she was definitely the lucky one. Then genuine nature of Nate’s words made her smile though, ”Thank you.” she said.
And there it was. The stark flash of nerves and discomfort that sometimes came with revealing what her powers could do. Kealey did her best to take it in stride and reminded herself that emotions were private, personal things and that it was perfectly normal for someone to be uncomfortable with the amount of insight she had. The smile long gone, the blond clicked her tongue against her teeth and sighed slightly.
”I’m sorry.” she said, with a small, sad, rueful smile as she picked up the box of books. ”I’ll leave you alone now. It was really nice talking to you, and I do hope that you’ll come back to the Full Circle. Aurum isn’t here today and he makes way better coffee than whoever that is working.”
It really was Kealey's only option. Staying and forcing her presence on the man would be rude. If he wanted to talk more, she'd be easy to find.
Stephen was a jerk. He was the biggest jerk. If there was a planet of jerks with a country housing the most jerks per capita, he would be the head of the ruling party of jerks. He felt so guilty watching Kealey's smile fade; he did not have to be an empath to know how she felt thanks to his feelings.
Stephen was not in the business of being honest, ever, but this could be different. She was a fellow mutant; maybe his only chance to actually meet with some of his own. He was not going to meet them, however, if he just let her walk away thinking that her mutation was bothersome to him. He had the choice to remain completely low-key or abandon a little anonymity and take a risk. After all, if things went really wrong, he could leave and people would be looking for a mutant named Nathan.
He took a deep breath, as though getting ready to jump in uncharted waters, and reached out, tugging on Kealey's wrist, being sure not to accidentally pull her or seem too aggressive. "Kealey, wait!" There was a short pause while he worked up the courage to go against his instincts, scanning the coffee shop to make sure no one was in earshot. Softly, he admitted, "I don't tell many people, but I'm a mutant too... and I was just worried if you could read that. I'm sorry if I, you know... offended you." Now all that was left was to wait and see what Kealey would say.

A hand caught her wrist and Kealey jumped, pulling her hand back and holding it against her chest, the books crashed to the floor again. Nate was explaining himself, but Kealey missed most of what he was saying. What if she’d….
Kealey shook it off in time to hear Nate admit that he was a mutant. Kealey shook her head, “I didn’t know.” she said, ”And I’m sorry if you came from somewhere where it matters if I did. I’m used to people being uncomfortable with what I do.”
She rubbed her wrist and bent to start picking up the books again, ”You probably shouldn’t touch me though.”
She pulled her hand away quickly, sending an immediate red flag off in his head that he had made a mistake. He had no clue what to do after making the situation more awkward than it already was. "It wasn't really about what you do," it was, but being honest there meant using the word "conman" in a sentence, "I guess I'm just not used to being able to be honest about what I am."
There was obviously a boundary Stephen crossed by touching Kealey, whether it was an emotional thing or something from her past, or maybe something else entirely. Regardless, he felt guilty and embarrassed. "I'm sorry, maybe I should probably head out. A lot of city to see, right?" He laughed nervously, placing a few dollars in tip on the counter.

Oh no…now she’d done it. Kealey took a deep breath and let it out on a sigh, ”You don’t have to leave.” she said, cheeks starting to burn a little. Boy, this conversation had gone south quickly. ”You didn’t do anything wrong.” she explained, ”It’s me…something strange has been happening to my abilities. It just worries me a bit when people touch me right now. That’s all. Please, sit back down, have another cup of coffee.” she added, bending to start picking up the books again.
Stephen mulled over whether he should stay or just cut his losses and leave, but his curiosity won him over. There were questions he might be able to ask here that would otherwise go unanswered; the coffee was not bad either.
He nodded to confirm his choice, ordered another coffee and took a seat at a table. "I was the one who made everything uncomfortable, you need'n't apologize, hun." He nudged the seat across from him back with his foot. "Why don't you take a seat-- at a safe but reasonable distance from me, so we can continue our chat?" He hoped she would recognize this as a joke before remembering she was an empath. For all the trouble, at least he knew she would not misinterpret him.
Calming down, becoming more aware of the situation, he noticed the books were on the ground again, leaving Kealey scrambling to pick them up once more. She had shown him hers, so maybe it was time to do the same. "Sugar, sit down. I'll take care of the books." Stephen made sure the shop employee was out of site before extending his shadow, encircling the pile of books. He closed his eyes, focusing to create several tangible hands at once, each collecting a book and returning it to the box. The task was completed in less than thirty seconds. "I guess I should apologize; that woulda sped things up the first time, huh?

Kealey could feel Nate’s indecision as he tried to decide whether or not to leave the shop. Chewing her bottom lip slightly as she waited, Kealey tried to work up a preemptive apology to Ghost for running off the woman’s customers. Something really needed to give.
Indecision disappeared, and Nate spoke, his words drawing a small sigh of relief from Kealey. Looking the stranger in the eyes, the blond shook her head, ”I think we’re both at fault for the awkwardness. “ he offered her a place to sit, and Kealey took the chair, cheeks pinking slightly at the way he pointed out that it was a reasonable and safe distance away.
She was about to apologize for the way she’d acted when he’d grabbed her wrist, when Nate’s shadow stared doing the most amazing thing with the books.
”Oh my!” the blond exclaimed, quietly but with ill-concealed glee. ”That’s incredible!” She watched the activity for a few moments, and by the time the task was complete, she was grinning.
Then Nate apologized. ”Oh no.” Kealey said, shaking her head vehemently, ”I should know better than to spring my abilities on people. I can imagine it’s quite a shock. Also…I didn’t mean to react so strongly to the contact. It was by no means out of bounds. It’s just that…something strange happened with my powers a little while back, and it’s made me a bit jumpy.”
Kealey wanted to change the subject, to something other than herself. She nodded to Nate’s shadow, ”Does it know any other tricks?” she asked, full to the brim with curiosity.
It was pretty thrilling to see Kealey's excitement toward his helpful pet shadow. He obviously loved how useful his mutation was, but he never really got to flaunt it and impress anyone else. "Tricks? Well, let's see..." His shadow bolted across the floor of the shop over to the bookstore area, picking a book off the shelf and returned it as he said, "For one, it's reach is pretty darn impressive, and it's strong enough to save my dumb self in a bar fight. Thank you," he added to the shadow as it handed him the book. There was no point in thanking it since it was merely an extension of his mental and physical being; it was the equivalent of thanking his foot for moving him.
"Other than that, it can stretch into whatever shapes I need it to, within reason obviously. For instance," the shadow spread in front of him, "a wall," it moved away, stretching taller, branching out, "a tree; not a very useful trick, but fun regardless."
The tree melted back into a puddle, approaching Kealey. It materialized into a hand offering itself politely to her hand. "Hey, it can even be a hand that you don't hafta worry about touching," he teased.
Trying not to let his ego get the best of him, he shifted to a more curious subject. "If I'm not oversteppin' my boundaries, what happens when an empath's powers let loose?" He knew what an empath did, but he did not know the inner workings of the mutation, nor any mutations that might come along with it. He just hoped the question would not upset her; he had done enough of that.

Kealey listened with an attentive ear as Nate explained all of the things his shadow could do. His power seemed like a most useful one with its reach, strength, and abilities. Nate was a lucky guy, and Kealey shook her head and chuckled when he pointed out that the shadow’s hand was one she didn’t have to worry about touching.
Nate also wanted to know about what happened when she cut loose with her powers and Kealey heaved a large sigh as she tried to pull the answer together in her head. But first, she had a question.
”What are the drawbacks? Does anything bad happen to you when you stretch him out too far?” the blond wondered, head tilting slightly to the side as she considered the possible drawbacks of having a prehensile shadow. There really weren’t many.
There also weren’t many things left to stall over.
What happened when an empath cut loose with her powers?
”Well.” Keaely said carefully. ”I can shut a whole room down, emotionally speaking. Or it can happen like last time.”
”My boyfriend kissed me, and I dumped a half a city block’s worth of emotions into his head.”
Stephen needed to know the rules and limits of his talent if he intended to depend on it, so he had spent the last years pushing his limits so he was never surprised by a flaw in his shadow when it mattered. "My drawbacks? The ones I've figured out are pretty manageable. I mean, if I overextend it, I lose the ability to control or shape the end of it. It really doesn't affect me; it just gives my shadow a radius it can't surpass. Other than that," he almost confessed to Kealey that his shadow was at the mercy of light and was unusable in pitch black darkness, but for safety's sake, it was important to keep a secret or two; "I haven't run into many problems yet."
Kealey's situation was certainly tragic. Stephen's shadow hand rested atop her hand, patting it sympathetically. "That can sure put some stress on things, I imagine. Have you talked to him since then?" Assuming he recovered, but he did not want to add to her already apparent guilt.

Stephen’s limitations definitely seemed manageable. For just a moment, Kealey allowed herself to be envious of his situation. Why couldn’t she have something easy to deal with? Something that was completely innocuous unless it was in use. The blond sighed a little wistfully at the thought, then stamped it down with a force. There was no use dwelling on such things.
The shadow hand patted hers, and Kealey tilted her head at the way it felt. Boy, abilities sure could be interesting. At Nate’s next question, Kealey laughed a little. Not at him, but at the implications of the question.
”I should hope so. We share an apartment. It’s not him, and it hasn’t happened again.” she explained. ”I just wouldn’t’ wish this on anyone else.”
