The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>> ”People always fear what is different, Detective. Despite how disappointing the reaction is…it’s understandable. I’m not sure how much I’d like someone stepping in and acting like they could do my job better solely based on genetics.”
>> "Yeah. I know how they can be...They've been hazing me ever since the X-men started working with the police force. Haven't even given me a properly-fitting police uniform. I think they don't think I'm one of them, so it's not worth it getting that fixed... or fixing any other things while they're at it. Like attitudes."
Jorge shook his head as he listened to the pair of them talk as he continued to look over book after book after book. The pile behind them of “looked through” books were getting bigger and they still had no luck finding Jackie. But as he looked, he mused over the thoughts of the two X-Men. He definitely understood where they were coming from. Being a cop, one thing they were always taught was that vigilantism was not acceptable. Nobody taking the law into their own hands is. But sometimes even the cops needed help, he could attest to that.
After all, he was mutant and a police officer, a walking contradiction itself. Many cops don’t like the idea of mutants because they have a natural gift that puts them on a different playing field than most cops. That cannot be good for their self-esteem. Still, that did not mean that mutants had to be railed against for it.
Still…at least the cops could have given the boy a decent pair of pants. He’s make sure to bring that up to the department later. If anyone argued the point, well they would just have to deal with him.
>> ”Your turn.”[/i]
>> "Anyways…I'll give it a try…So far, nothing..."[/i]
A new plan was set into motion. The kid, the boy, had some mutation that apparently gave him good eyesight. That would at least be somewhat helpful for now, depending on whether those kids actually placed Jackie inside the book with any point sticking out. Then...he saw the shard platform...
"Whoa," was all he silently muttered.
Now that definitely did seem pretty useful. Only a fool not paying any attention at all would have missed that display. Jorge had to admit that he was steadily becoming more and more impressed with these X-Men and all the tricks they had up their sleeves. Makes him glad that they were all on the same side. He hated to think what the kid could do with something like that.
Anyways, he stepped back and watched as the kid actually floated up on his shard-like platform and inspect books. It was a slim chance but it was going to have to one that they needed to take. They were steadily running out of time. He feared the condition of that boy if they waited any longer. It could get to the point where the blonde would no longer be able to sense him because of…well…reaching his due date.
Jorge prayed it would not come to that.
“Swear, second I find that kid,” he let the threat drop momentarily as he plucked out another book and found nothing inside. “Second time we’ve had to deal with him. Told him the first not to not use his powers again until he got some training in.” he shook his head. He should not have been angry with the kid, and in actuality he really was not, he was only frustrated. Kind of hard to watch someone make the same stupid move over and over again even though each time you tell them not to. Jorge shook his head as he pulled out one last book from the bottom shelf, opened it, and found nothing. With a sigh he set it aside and glanced back to them. “My shelf is empty. Maybe…” he nodded towards another group of shelves just to their right. They looked cleaner, as if they have been used recently rather than the extremely dusty ones they were going through. “Maybe here…” he muttered as he pulled out a book, little realizing and in a shelf above his head was a book entitled Aesop’s Fables, with a very interesting bookmark inside…

Kealey could feel the detective’s reaction to what Kealey and Shin told him about the New York City police officers, and huffed a little herself when Shin pointed out how they’d been hazing him for quite some time now. The pants thing was simply unacceptable! How was someone supposed to run and move around in pants that didn’t fit? Kealey berated herself a little, mentally, this was something she should have fixed ages ago.
It was also not the task at hand.
Shin agreed to try his idea, and Kealey grinned as he brought up a shard platform and climbed on. It never ceased to amaze the blond how cool that was. ” He makes those things with his mind.” she bragged a little, unable to help herself, then watched as he rose and scanned the books. The emotions were still there…and Kealey frowned slightly as Shin called down that he hadn’t found anything yet. Kealey closed her eyes and concentrated…something was strange about the emotions…they were close, but she still was not right on top of them. She sighed, it was hard being this precise, her powers had always been broad, trying to narrow them down was a new, and difficult, trick.
Jorge fussed a little, and Kealey worked to keep his frustration from bleeding over into her. Frustration made concentration difficult, and she needed every bit of it at the moment. ”So many youngsters go through that. We see it at the Mansion a lot. Kids are kids, whether they're mutants or not. Abilities just give them another thing to try and one up each other at.”
The blond paused for a second and frowned, ”Maybe when all of this is over, though, we should talk to his parents about getting him into some classes at the school. A little training never hurt anyone.” That said, she turned her attention back to Shin.
”Keep looking up there. she called up to Shin as the detective continued to sift through books. ”I’m not right on top of him here…and I doubt he’s in the basement, so that must mean he’s up on the shelf. You’ve got the right idea, but I’m just not sure where.”

The bragging did nothing to stoke his ego. His focus was on the task at hand.
Okay. Maybe it did a little to stoke his ego. Shin's face didn't show it. He kept his eyes tuned to the shelves, circling around them like a predator, waiting for the right moment to strike.
The books were all relatively uneven, as seems to be the case with books. Some were taller, some shorter, or smaller. Some even had uneven pages or binding. He was no eagle. While his power helped with seeing the measurements, it in no way gave him super sight.
Jorge said something, and Shin redoubled his focus. It was worrying, with the timer ticking down. Not the kind of worry that distracted one from their job. The kind that made them work harder. The good kind of pressure. It was a shame it had to be there at all.
The platform rose a few inches, at Kealey's suggestion. Shin squinted, pushing himself along in the air in front of the shelf. Nothing stood out to him. Perhaps, another angle.
How did he even know which angle to use?
The platform drifted to the left. Shin tilted his head. Something stood out. Shin blinked. Then, his brow crinkled. "Right in front of your nose..." He muttered. Then, louder he said. "Detective. Shelf above your head. Look up. Some sort of fables book with a very interesting bookmark..."

It was simple to say that Jorge was getting fed up with this kid. He knew that when growing teens develop powers, the majority of them love to mess around, try to impress friends and just commit stupid acts. But this was really far and beyond, even for Jackie! The first time he did this, his mom had barely found him after a couple days in his own room. Now he was stupid enough to do this in a public library where paper is bountiful? What if the X-Men had not the right people to search him out? What if the MRC had never gotten the phone call? Or if those kids had chickened out and never told them where they had placed him? There were too many possible outcomes that could have all ended badly, and for what? So he could impress friends?
He was going to wring his neck. The detective just knew he was. Maybe he could distract the X-Men long enough to make it look like an accident.
With a short chuckle and sigh to himself, Jorge buried the idea. As much fun as that was to think about, he was a cop and his main priority was to rescue that kid, however stupid he was. Maybe Kealey was right, a little training at the mansion should straighten him out. At least give him a little bit more control over his powers so this won’t happen again.
Well, first thing was first though. They had to find him. With a sigh the detective pulled out another book, flipped it open and found no bookmarks, origami cranes, or even a strip of a post-it. He was quickly beginning to lose some hope when Shin, the mutant floating around the bookshelves pointed something out to him.
>> "Right in front of your nose…Detective. Shelf above your head. Look up. Some sort of fables book with a very interesting bookmark..."
“Wha-?” he looked up at the shelf above his head and spied all the books there. From his angle he could not see the tops so he did not know if any books had bookmarks sticking out but he trusted the X-Man’s word.
Reaching up, Jorge began to pull books down. Heavy volumes, all of them, but as he flipped them over, none of them seemed to have anything between their pages. Only dust and lint fluttered out. But still he did not stop until he looked up and spied a large copy of Aesop’s Fables. As he stared at that leather bound book with the golden, embossed letters, this collection of children’s moral stories, the man quickly shook his head in disbelief. It simply could not be true. There was…there was simply no way…
“You’ve got to be kidding me.” he muttered as he reached up, pulled the book down and immediately flipped it open.
The pages opened towards the middle of the book and slipped tightly between two of them was a flattened, folded up origami crane. Jorge knew the look of it instantly as to being that of Jackie, the missing mutant. The deepest sigh of relief fell from his lips as he gently lifted Jackie out of the book and rushed over to a nearby table.
“I got him, I got him,” he muttered gently as he very softly laid the crane on the table and turned to the X-Men. He sighed and smiled in both a relieved and appreciative way towards them. “Thank you,” he said as he nodded them towards the crane. “This is Jackie, um…see if maybe you can calm him down enough to him back to his human form. I need to get the medics.”
The detective then turned away, pulled his radio from his belt and called in the code. The medics that were all waiting outside would soon be bustling into the library en masse, all to treat the boy. Hopefully they could get him back to human form so he can be treated before he gets worse.

Shin found the boy. Just like Kealey had known he would. Shin was good like that, and the blond absolutely beamed as he pointed out a book full of fables just above the Detective’s head. This was great. Really, really great. The relief was, needless to say, palatable, and Kealey sighed right along with the detective as his frustration abated and was replaced with warmer, fuzzier feelings and concern. Detective Cervantes carried the boy off and Kealey grinned at her boyfriend, ”I knew you could do it.” she said brightly, then got back down to business.
The boy needed to calm down, and now that she was really focusing on him, Kealey could feel his emotions, and there was a lot of panic there. A lot of panic, and several other things that Kealey associated with a relatively dire situation.
”I can help with that.” she said easily when Jorge pointed out that the boy needed to calm down in order to shift back into himself.
Forward the blond walked, dropping down so that she was eye level with the crane on the table. Normally it would have felt odd, talking to something like this, but Kealey could feel its emotions…and they were anything but calm…her own heart was beating in time to the ebb and flow of emotions coming from the boy…and he was exhausted. ”Hi Jackie…” she said gently, ”My name is Kealey and I’ve got powers too. I’m going to use mine on you and they’re going to make you feel better.” The crane didn’t nod, but Kealey imagined it doing so.
”Okay. Here I go.” she said, and down went everything negative she could find. The blond held those emotions there, in check, and waited…slowly but surely calm crept in and she snagged it…ramping it up like the volume on a stereo.
” Now that you’re calm…” she said, voice soft and nearly monotone with the calm she was reflecting. ”Work on getting back to you.”
She could wait…it was nice hanging out in the library like this…it was quiet…and so very relaxing.

Nothing happened.
Kealey had helped the boy calm down, but still... nothing happened.
Shin's platform touched down on the carpet. As he stepped down off of it, the platform vanished. He knew what the problem was. He didn't need anyone to fill him in.
The Asian scooped the paper crane up off the table, without asking permission. "It's okay," He said softly, pulling out a chair, and sliding into place at the table. "I get it. You're tired. I've been there. Let me."
He could take it from here. He was Asian. That was, like, totally grounds for calling himself an Origami master. He'd made paper cranes in his sleep in the lower grades. He could handle unfolding a bird, here. It didn't take long. Shin set the piece of paper on the floor, with plenty of space around it. He swept his arms to keep the area clear.
"Stand back."
Now that the paper boy was unfolded and calm, he could grow.

Jorge
Once Jorge had stepped away, all that was left was a single paper crane sitting on a table facing a pair of X-Men. The mutant boy trapped in his paper origami form could make no motion that he understood anything of his situation. It was very liking that the boy could even be unconscious or worst of all…but that was unlikely. He was not dead, he was simply trapped and weakened from not eating or drinking for the last two days. Thankfully though there was a mutant there who could sense that the boy was still alive.
>> ”Hi Jackie…My name is Kealey and I’ve got powers too. I’m going to use mine on you and they’re going to make you feel better…Okay. Here I go…Now that you’re calm…Work on getting back to you.”
Her voice was lyrical to the folded paper boy and for some reason he really was beginning to relax, though that was not visible on the paper crane’s face. Even in his weakened state of mind he could feel the panic he once had melt away and he was starting to feel better. He did not fear being trapped here forever anymore. He was not going to die as some origami fold. He was going to live. He kept telling himself that over and over again, he was going to live! Live! Live!
But, even as the tension began to melt away, the weariness was still there. The adrenaline was gone that would have given him the extra force he needed to unfold. All that was left was relaxation, but on top of that, just plain tiredness. He wanted to sleep, to rest finally in this comfort that now filtered through his brain.
Sooo…sleepy…
But then…another voice entered his blank world…
>> "I get it. You're tired. I've been there. Let me." [/i]
Weakly, Jackie noticed that he was being lifted up. He did not know what was going to happen now so a momentary panic wanted to settle in but the girl’s influence was keeping him calm. It was only then that he notice that one of his wings was stretched out and it felt so good. He was being unfolded! Gently each edge was opened up, paper was unfolded, creases flattened and each time wanted to make him gasp in delight. His body was so cramped up and weak he doubted he would have been able to do this on his own. Now though, he was beginning to feel much, much better. It was only when he was completely unfolded into a blank, sheet of beige colored paper that he felt truly relaxed.
Gently he was placed down and the Jackie knew he was on the carpeted floor.
>> "Stand back."[/i]
So it was time. With a grunt the paper twitch and quivered before it slowly began to refold itself, but this time it was not into the form of a crane. First one leg appeared, then the other, then two arms and a head. The beige paper slowly took on more texture as tiny spots began to sprout all over the head which grew into long hair. It was then that the body lost all semblance of paper as it filled up and took on the appearance of a real child. Slowly this continued to shift and grow until finally Jackie Paper, the young teen lay there on the library floor, exhausted, pale, weak…and naked.
Jackie gasped painfully as precious air entered his lungs.
***
“Alright people, let’s move!” Jorge announced as he tossed open the front door.
The detective, relieved that the X-Men had found Jackie, was now attempting to usher in the EMTs to help revive the boy. For too long the boy was trapped in that paper crane form, with no food or water of any kind so he was definitely going to need the EMTs assistance. The last time he did this, he was in the hospital for a good day or so and he had only been trapped for a day. It was over two days now and the boy was going to be in bad shape.
“Come on, let’s go!” Jorge announced as he opened the way for the paramedics to rush in.
Quickly he followed them, rushing back to where he left the X-Men with Jackie. He hoped and prayed that they had managed to do something to help him return his human form. He was only glad this was all over…but yeah…he was definitely going to kill that kid now.

Kealey was doing a good job keeping the boy calm…but it just didn’t seem to be helping very much. He sat…and he sat…and he sat some more, still folded as a paper crane. His other emotions were worrying, and the blond was about to say as much when Shin’s voice rang out behind her and he came up to the table. Kealey simply watched, still doing her job as he took the crane gently in his hands and started to unfold it, bit by bit.
Of course. If the boy was exhausted, there was no way he’d be able to unfold himself to a point where he could return to normal. Warm feelings for Shin flooded her and Kealey smiled as she watched him work and listened to him talk. Soon he sat the boy down and stepped away, they’d done everything they could. The rest was up to Jackie.
The paper started to fold again, and for a moment Kealey worried that Shin’s work had been for nothing and the boy was returning to his crane shape. But slowly, a leg appeared, then another, and soon enough there was a young man laying on the floor in the middle o the library. A very…scantily clad young man.
Hands moving to the top of her jacket, Kealey undid the buttons and slipped out of it so she could use it to at least preserve a little modesty. She then set about keeping the boy calm, he was obvious exhausted and needed to rest. Voices rang out, announcing Detective Cervantes’ return, and Kealey smiled at the boy. ” Detective Cervantes is coming with the paramedics now, and I think then they’re going to take you to the hospital.”
The boy groaned, and Kealey frowned, was he in pain from being so cramped up for so long? Jackie didn’t make her wait long for an answer though, he simply shook his head and said quietly, voice raspy and barely above a whisper, “Detective Cervantes? He’s going to kill me for getting stuck again.”

Boy, he was naked. It was nothing Shin hadn't seen before in the mirror, but... when Kealey put her nice coat on the guy, Shin couldn't help but frown. He masked it behind a more sincere frown. The kid was exhausted, and had just gone through a lot. There was no reason to be upset with him over his nuding up of his girlfriend's jacket. Also... these things, they could wash. The important thing was... the kid was safe.
Yeah. That was important. There would be time for back-patting later. Cervantes was on the movie, getting all the people who would be able to further help the paper boy. And Shin? Where did that leave him?
Shin shook one head, and addressed the paper boy. "He's probably only mad because he was worried you'd get hurt. You scared us half to death. We're just glad... you made it through alright."
He could be the consoling nice guy who was not complaining about how the person he was consoling was naked inside his girlfriend's jacket. Somewhat.

Jorge
Jorge, followed by a gathering paramedics, made his way back through the stacks in order to get Jackie the help he needed. He hoped that being free from the book that the boy would be able to shift himself back to human form, but he was beginning to have his doubts. Being in one form for too long really cramped up the kid and kept him from shifting to the appropriate form. He knew this all too well from the first time Jackie had done this to himself. For a good full day he was at the precinct while they attempted to keep him calm and aide him in shifting back. It was hard work but they had slowly manage to coax Jackie enough to return to his human form.
This situation was slightly different though. The kid had been trapped inside of a book in his origami form. The pressure from the book squishing him was sure to have made him cramp up all the more and he doubted he could manage to calm down or even be conscious enough to shift back on his own. Still though, he hoped that with the presence of the X-Men, if Jackie could not do it, then hopefully they could help him.
Jogging through the library, Jorge re-entered to scene to a welcome site. Jackie was lying on the ground, a jacket covering his nude form while the two X-Men seemed to be attempting to reassure him. Boy did he look like hell.
The detective shook his head as he walked up, the paramedics rushing by to aid the boy. He looked pale, emaciated and just plain tired. He prayed the boy would be okay throughout this whole ordeal. He wanted to get to him before it was too late, maybe even attempt to slap criminal charges on the punks that had stuff him inside the book. But he tossed those thoughts aside for now. For now he needed to make sure that Jackie was okay.
“Jackie,” he said in his usual grizzly voice. It was apparent that look of fear in the kid’s eyes as he eyed the detective. Jorge only arched a brow in response. “Glad you’re okay.” he said with a nod. “But I’m calling your mother.”
There was only the smallest whimper of “nooo” as Jackie was being tended to. Jorge turned his attention to the two X-Men and gave them a respectful nod. He really did appreciate their help in this problem. If it had not been for them, it couldn’t have taken much longer to find Jackie, maybe even too late. But, instead of dwelling on those possibilities, he thankful for what did occur.
He immediately stuck his hand out to shake both of their hands. “Thank you. We really couldn’t have done it without you both,” he said with a smile. He then paused for a second before he regarded the Japanese kid. “Said you’re having trouble around the precinct right? Come talk to me, okay? I’ll make certain you get set up properly.”

The paramedics arrived with a proper blanket and Kealey was able to reclaim her jacket. For some reason…she didn’t want to put it on though, and settled for draping it over her arm. She’d wear it again after it was cleaned.
Detective Cervantes held out his hand and Kealey shook it as the paramedics tended to Jackie. The kid was obviously worried about the reaction his mother was going to have when Jorge called her, and what was going to happen after that, but the Detective was grateful. It was a welcome change, and Kealey smiled her reciprocal thanks, and grinned at Shin when Jorge said he’d help at the station.
” When he’s up to it, or if you see his mother…please give her the number to the Mansion.” she said, reaching out and handing Jorge a card that she’d retrieved from the pocket of her jacket.
”We don’t just run around playing super hero.” she said, “He’s got to learn how to actually use his powers sometime and I think it’s probably easier to do it around kindred spirits.”
Hopefully the boy and his mother would accept the help. There were a lot of libraries in New York…and they hadn’t even touched recycling bins yet.

"I'm glad we could help," Shin said. He shook the detective's hand. "And, thanks..." A hint of uncertainty crept into his voice.
He almost wanted to solve the problem by himself. Surely, it wouldn't last forever. He could figure out the solution easy enough. He could at least get a decent pair of pants...
The offer for help was valued, still. It was nice when the cops actually wanted to work with the X-men. Too often, they just shot glares.
These officers were doing a great job of helping the paper boy, and the medics did their part, too. Shin never got in their way. Why, then, did the police so often take it as policy to feel like a little vigilante justice got in the way of their jobs?
Turning, Shin looked to Kealey. "Well, I guess we should go." Leave the library to the rescue team, and all that. "Not sure I'll look at this place again in the same light."
