The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

His first day without his brother and partner, Kai determined the best coping mechanism was to throw himself into his work. Therefore, his first action was to plant a Help Wanted sign in the window. After flipping on the Open lights, he spent the next several minutes moving everything around. Maybe he would implement a whole new system of organization. Cut flowers right as you walk in… and place the card stand over there. Have to clear the walk way to the green house…
One feature that he was excited to implement was a little herb garden section. A lot of apartments only had enough room for a small window garden or herb garden in the kitchen. He wanted to cater to that need.
Hauling bags of fertilizer and soil, sweeping up after, and more organizing was the plan for the rest of the morning. If he got tired, he’d work on paper work. They… He needed to do inventory before doing some more ordering. He’d fit in helping customers if there was time… “Gotta keep busy,” he commented under his breath.
One of the things that had attracted Hunter to the property that was now Spiritual Balance was the space out the back. He’d organised for them to do work on the space to start to turn it into an oriental rock garden. While the basics of that had been done he felt that it could do with more trimmings to complete it. A small water feature, a half dozen or so more plants and a few bird feeders were what Hunter had in mind.
And so it was that Hunter walked into the little shop. ’Flower Peddlers’ was what the sign above the door said. Stepping inside the place appeared empty at first, but then Hunter could pick out noises from the back. Most likely the owner was still doing some work back there. After all they had only opened three minutes ago. He politely waited while wondering around the place and seeing what caught his eye.
His lofty goals and plans for totally revamping the storefront were dashed when the first customer of the day walked in, only moments after opening. He heaved the 50 lb bag of soil onto his shoulder and moved out into the open to greet this early riser. A lone man was meandering around the front of the store.
“’Mornin’!” Kai called out cheerily. “Please excuse the mess,” though things were immaculate, if a little unorganized, “we’re moving some things around, so if you’re looking for anything in specific, just holler ‘Kai’ and I’ll be right there!” Maybe if he kept up a happy façade for the customers he would start to believe it himself.
He clipped the corner of the bag and upended it over a large earthen pot from which he would spoon it into smaller pots. It was so relaxing to have his hands in dirt, almost as though it washed his worries away. He kept one eye and ear out for any sign that the person needed help. Men, in his experience, either knew exactly what they wanted and were avid and passionate gardeners or knew absolutely nothing and had a hard time asking for help sometimes. In the later case, he needed to be ready to jump in with some friendly suggestions.
Hunter nodded in greeting when the owner came out. The owner was younger than he was expecting but Hunter smiled politely none the less. “Actually I was hoping for some input,” he said as he made his way over to where the boy was working with the bag of soil he’d brought in, “I’ve recently opened a sort of self help centre nearby and it has a lovely little oriental rock garden out back.”
Hunter held out one of the Spiritual Balance leaflets. It was open to the section that had two pictures of the garden which showed you pretty much all of it. “I was hoping to add a little more to it,” he explained, “and a fresh pair of eyes never hurt. I was thinking a half dozen or so more plants, a small water feature and a few bird feeders. What do you think?”
Kai examined the brochure. It was a nice little area, trim and well kept-looking, but he could see the holes that needed to be filled in. He liked a creative challenge.
“Yeah, it’s a good start. I would recommend one taller plant here,” he pointed “A Japanese Maple tree would stay pretty low, five meters or so, but would give you some color and some height. They’re also supposed to be authentic to Japanese zen gardens. And for some color, it depends on what you like to grow. Chrysanthemums or irises along here would brighten it up and fill in nicely after a year or so- they’re perennials. What do you think?”
The boy had a good eye. Hunter enjoyed the peacefulness of tending to a garden. Apparently Kai had a flare for designing them. He nodded at the suggestions before adding, “Irises, irises I think.” Paragon had taken the name Iris. He longed to see the girl again, but knew he hadn’t the right to go and see her. Best he could do was make it easy for her to find him if she wanted to.
“I also think something to bring birds into the place would go well,” he said, “Would you be willing to finish of the design of the place and help me set it up? I’d pay extra for your time and skill in garden design of course. I think you’ve got a better eye for this than me.
“Of course, I’d be willing to help.” Kai jumped at the chance to work with this peaceful area and blushed at the compliment. “I can get you started with those irises today. As for the rest, I’m better with the plants than the birds, but if you want to attract them I would put the bird feeder right here and maybe a bird house on the opposite side.”
He leaned back to get the piece together the full effect in his head. “Hmm… for the water feature, were you thinking something that makes noise, like a fountain or miniature fall or a still reflecting pool?”
Either would be lovely, but if he had to plan around a stationary pool or waterfall, he might have to re-design where the tree would go. The wheels turned in his head, calculating the movement of the sun and how rain would likely run. Would flooding be an issue, or moisture retention? He would have to survey the sight personally to know for sure. Yes, he liked a creative challenge. It was the perfect distraction.
Kai seemed up for it and Hunter gave the boy a friendly smile. “That’s what I was looking for with the birds,” he explained, “Something to attract them. Water feature wise I think a miniature fall would work well, plus the rhythmic flow of water would help meditation.”
“Tell you what. I’ll let my receptionist know that you’ll be coming round later today to get started. I’ve got sessions all afternoon, but if you start before then I’ll give you a hand. Is there anything you want me to take back now or will you bring it all later?” Hunter didn’t bother asking about the price, he would have enough in his reserves to cover this.
He nodded, the fall would add a lot to the atmosphere. “I have some free time in the afternoon- we’re usually pretty slow from 2 to 4, so I’ll close up then.” He had to be careful with this. There was no brother to relieve him right now. He couldn’t close too often and if he couldn’t find and help, he’d have to completely rework the schedule in order to make deliveries.
“Our vans are pretty big, so I can bring everything at once. Unless, of course, you wanted to do any yourself before I get there… Do you have an address?”
“I should have a gap around half two to three o clock between sessions,” Hunter told Kai, “so I’ll come out and give you a hand then. Keep the leaflet, it’s got the address on it. I’ll wait for you rather than start early. This is your project so you take the lead.”
“Right, I’ll see you later than,” with a smile Hunter turned to leave, but on the way out spotted the help wanted sign. Turning back he pulled out a blank white card and a pen. He jotted down a name and a number before handing it to Kai. “Give Kelly a ring about the position here,” he suggested, “She applied for the receptionist position at Spiritual Balance and was very interested in the garden in particular. I think she’d like working here.” With that Hunter headed back and started mentally planning the day’s sessions.
A referral and a job all at the same time, the day had definitely started out good. He called the person Hunter Antonescu recommended, one Kelly. Over the phone she had seemed fairly knowledgeable and excited about the prospect of working in a small shop. An interview in person would seal the deal, but he was confident that he could rely on her.
After a stop at the hardware store for the supplies need for a waterfall, Kai had arrived at Spiritual Balance.
Now he was kneeling in the beautiful garden, planting happy little irises. He knew the little ones would be happy in this tranquil place. They would bring a lot of joy to the visitors to this garden. It was the best outcome he could hope for them.
After his session with Meld Hunter needed something to clear his head and lighten his mood. Helping Kai in the garden seemed the perfect solution. The remembering of his past made him acutely aware of how succulent Kai’s neck looked. Shaking his head to clear he thoughts he approached the boy.
“I’ve got maybe twenty minutes to spare,” he said as he looked at the irises that were already planted, “How can I help?” The addition of the Irises was perfect, already improving the garden. He was most intrigued about the water feature and where Kai intended to place it. But rather than pry he was content to wait for Kai to get to that stage.
Kai shielded his face from the sun and looked up at the man approaching to help. “Hello, Mr. Antonescu. I’ve gotten the irises pretty well in, but I wanted to run the plan for the waterfall by you.” He got up from his crouch in the ‘bed and indicated with his hand. “The ground is naturally a little higher here, so the plan is to put the upper part of the water fall here, then it will fall into a small pool here.” To illustrate, he took several of the rocks he brought and outlined the area.
He waited for Hunter’s comments, but was satisfied. And he was content that the peaceful garden enthusiast would approve.
“If everything looks good, you could dig right there for the tree…”
“Please,” Hunter said as Kai rose from the flowerbed, “call me Hunter.” He watched as the boy outlined his plan for the waterfall. The location was good and there were no technical problems as far as he could see.
“That all looks fine to me,” he said nodding with approval, “I was wondering about the possibility of having fish in the pool at the bottom?” When Kai pointed out the place to dig for the tree Hunter picked up the nearby spade and rested it over his shoulder as he wondered over to the spot. “How deep and wide do you want me to dig?”
Fish? Yes, Kai had kind of envisioned fish in the pool. Little (or not so little) Koi fish, probably. “Yeah, it would definitely be big enough. I could probably get some algae going in there, too.” More plotting and planning for the perfect atmosphere. And if some moss just happened to grow on the rocks, well who was to say that he had done it?
Kai grabbed his second shovel, intent on starting on the fountain/ waterfall. “Dig about two feet in diameter, a foot and a half deep. And could you hand me that pump?” He pointed at a small metal box with some tubes sticking out of it. If there are fish involved, maybe I should make a point to go get that copper basin for the bottom pool… It would be much more attractive and sturdy than a cheap plastic one…
