The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Aura walked out of her room, closing the door behind her softly. Looking down she smiled at what she had recently found out was a skunk. The creature waited for her to begin moving down the hallway before following next to her, sniffing the air to keep track of her, despite being close enough for it's eyes to see her. It had been several weeks since she had found the small creature and so far she had enjoyed it quite well. Bending down she scratched the animal behind the ear before rising and moving down the hallway, with no destination in mind.
Aura wiped some of the brown strands of her long hair a way from her face as she looked around for a destination until she thought of one, the Cathedral. It was large and their was usually people there so it could also be a way to meet to team members, which Aura enjoyed for several reasons. Her eyes looking over where she was she quickly took a turn and in just a few minutes entered the cathedral. She had learned where it was quickly, having come there often when she thought about her old friends, one of which she had named her pet for.
Walking deep into the room she only recalled her friend was there when it's tail brushed up against her leg. Sitting down on one of the benches, she patted her lap, and the skunk hopped onto and sat much like a cat would. It kept sniffing the air and adjusting it's ears to try and sense anything that could be dangerous. Aura petted it softly a bit surprised their was no one here, but then it was pretty late in the night, in fact as Aura looked out the window she realized it was almost sunrise.
Sunrise was always an interesting time for Ward. Having foregone sleep completely after his mutation manifested, it gave the young man something to look forward to during those abysmal nights. Although since yesterday, it had given him more than enough time to fill out the paperwork coming required to become an official resident at the Sanctuary, as well as get acquainted with the general layout of the building's 'basic access' rooms. Ward was certainly curious about the rest of the facility, but he wasn't going to risk throwing off a good thing in having a free, high class place to stay. As such, the mutant had simply behaved himself, and headed to the Sanctuary's sanctuary (though the official name present on all floor maps was 'Cathedral', Trent couldn't resist the irony) to see what a rising sun looked like through stained glass. And so, the young man had laid out across the front pew in anticipation.
Trent still had a multitude of information to process after the last few days, and the serene inactivity had given him that opprotunity. With light starting to trickle in through the cathedral's windows, the mutant sat up, intending to have a nice stretch to keep limber. Not like it would bother anyone, he was the only person in the room at the ti....or not. Farther towards the back of the sea of pews sat a girl, more than likely in her mid teens, looking towards the stained glass windows with something sitting in her lap; a fat, fluffy cat, if Trent wasn't mistaken. Oh well, it's not like Ward could keep thinking that he was the only mutant with a problem.
Getting up from his seat and rising to his full height, the young man forced a limited control over the barrier surrounding his body to allow sound to pass through. Speaking up with a casual, polite tone, the mutant's reverberating voice echoed to an even greater extent due to the cathedral's architecture as he made a brief waving gesture with two fingers to the teen.
The cathedral was such a comforting place, maybe because it was just a shrine. Petting the skunk a few more times, her fingers wrapping around the tail gently before letting it go. She did not hear Ward come in as she was to lost in her own thoughts. The stained glass windows made it hard to see the actual outside, but the light shined through well enough. Her mind kept going back to the day, the sounds of gunfire still rang in her ears. Closeing her eyes she sat their for a few moments before hearing something behind her.
Picking the cat up and setting becide her she stood, just as the man greeted her, in a strange voice that seemed to echo even without the cathedrals help. She assumed he was mutant, after all such a voice would be extremely unusual for a human. "it is, i do enjoy watching the sunrise" she admitted as she walked to the ile and then closer to this new person she had never seen before. "hello, my name is Aura, and yours?" she asked curiously, only looking down when she felt the soft black and white creature brush up against her leg, sniffing the air, the creature seemed a bit confused, it had heard someone but it could only smell Aura nearby. Confused the Skunk began to turn around, but Aura sensing her companions concern kneeled down and scratched his ear.
Aura was used to seeing Mutants here, after all even those who had no religion like herself often found themselfs here, either thinking of days long past or those who were no longer with them. She did wonder why this Mutant was here, but also respected the fact that he just might not wish to talk about it. "Normally theirs a few more people" she said with a slight smile.
As the younger mutant stood and looked in his direction, Trent's lips curled into a soft smile. The man wasn't certain if it was the fact that he'd spent time in a serene location or that he was beginning to run low on energy, but his mood had mellowed out strongly from the day before. It was strange to think that he actually felt better after being hit by a car, but such was life with his 'cursed blessing'. As another thought crossed Ward's mind, his smile broke for a split second with what appeared to be an involuntary twitch: it was even stranger to think that some part of his being was already craving that sort of energy again...
Nodding pleasantly at the teen's answer to his question, Trent's head tilted slightly to one side as she walked in his direction. He was having trouble determining what kind of creature the girl was holding, but didn't dwell on it for long before she introduced herself. Aura... was that a code name, or did her parents just name her that? From what Trent had heard, it was fairly common in the mutant subculture to come up with code names, whether it be in embrace of the new identity that came with the new lifestyle, or to separate one's self from 'normal' society by adopting a name that followed different rules. If that was actually the case, then the girl in front of him must be a mutant. Bowing his head in greeting, the young man replied with an amiable tone, ”Pleasure to meet you, Aura; that's such an interesting name.. did you come up with it yourself? I'm Trent Ward, call me anything you'd like.”
Noting the pet's behavior as its nostrils flared, Trent couldn't help but grinning for a brief moment; apparently the young man wasn't the only creature in the cathedral having trouble figuring out the details of strangers. In response to Aura's statement about other mutants normally being around, Ward's head bobbed into a nod as he pointed his thumb casually over his shoulder, ”I could understand that, especially with the number of throne seats up front. But really, everything being empty's fine with me, I'm pretty used to it.” Letting his hand drop back down to his side, the mutant motioned to the skunk before continuing on, ”So, is this what you and the furry guy do around this time every day?”
"My Name is a description of my power, given to me by my first charge, but perhaps it would be easier to display" She said with a smile and as she did a see through pink aura formed around her, the energy seemed to flow until it sat neatly around her like an inch thick outline. "I can make parts of my Aura solid to use a shield or weapon" She said, as the aura flowed to her hand and formed a blade around her fist, and then as quickly as it had come into view the pink aura faded away, it took just a few seconds until it all faded out of sight. Still she smiled, this place was fun, she could display her power almost whenever she liked without issue.
The skunk seemed almost board with Aura's display and walked a little bit a way choosing to hop up on to one of the benches. The creatures stripe stretched from her head split along the sides of her back before meeting at her tail again. "No, i am usually training, but i come when i wish to think of my my old friends, and the Skunk well i found him one day at the Zoo" she said looking over to him, figuring she was a bit board of the place. She wondered if he was new, she had not seen him before but their were a number of people in and out some to stay others never to return, so missing people was easy.
"So what are you doing at this hour? DO you just enjoy the night as i do, or simply wondering?" SHe asked curious about the new man, to her eyes. walking back to the seat she had, she reached into the beg she had brought, and pulled out a small plastic cage, and in it was a small white mouse. Immediately the skunk moved to Aura, as Aura picked up still living rat and dropped it almost into the hungry skunks jaws, still the mouse was cought on the skunks second attempt. "She useually gets hungry at this time, so i came prepared" she said with a shrug, moving around the feeding animal who seemed much happier now at his devoured the mouse.
As Aura gave an explanation and display of her powers, Ward's mouth went slightly agape at the sight. The teen before him could not only create and disperse a field around her body –its basic state not much unlike his own 'gift'--, but she could manipulate its shape as well? The color was an odd feature to him, but if the young man had found anything so far it was that each mutation was as different as its carrier. Was there something similar in their personalities that would cause the manifestation of such an ability, or was it completely random? Trent would have to remember Aura well; perhaps he could learn something from her.
Observing curiously as Aura interacted with the pet, he couldn't help but shake his head at the revelation that it was actually a skunk. Trent had never seen one in person, and had honestly never given the creatures much thought outside of watching PePe Pee-Yew on Zaney Toons when he was a child; he could hardly believe that he had mistaken it for a chubby cat! Remaining quiet as the teen rummaged around through her bags and began to feed her animal, Ward blinked at the vigorous creature's capture and kill of its breakfast, his expression going blank momentarily, before clearing his throat out of habit. This was certainly one of those cases that it could be said people really do learn something new every day..
”Well.. you certainly do stay prepared... Anyway, I'm just here because I stopped sleeping, what...” His brow furrowing in thought, Trent squinted as one of his eyes rolled up to the corner of his field of vision. The mutant was trying to recall the exact amount of time since his powers had manifested.. had it really been that long? ”Oye, about two and a half years ago now. So, I just wanted a view of the light coming up from the stained glass here, really.” Leaning against one of the pews absently, Trent's body remained stationary almost three inches away from the object's surface. It may have been a simple gesture, but he'd come to find that sometimes simple actions were worth a thousand words worth of explanation among mutants. Heaving his shoulders into a casual shrug, Trent adjusted his tie, fumbling with it for several moments as he was unable to actually get a grip on it. However, he simply enjoyed seeing the black tie's yellow smiley face emblazoned at the bottom of the cloth.
"That's a really cool power you've got there, Aura. No offense, but it reminds me of bubblegum... well, badass bubblegum, but that's just the color. You said that you train with it, so what do you try to do while training?”
"Yea, i try to be" She responded about being prepared. She had been trained to make sure she had what she needed if it was possible, as in her former role, not being prepared would have meant death. Either way it made sense why he was here, Aura just figured he meant he woke up and started wondering around. Her Eyes looked over him and then up to the stained glass windows, most people found such windows to be pretty, Aura disliked them because they were harder to see through then normal glass and Aura preferred to be able to see if any threat was coming if possible. She knew it was unlikely here, in the heart of sanctuary but old habits refused to die and that was a good thing in Aura's mind.
"Almost the same time as mine emerged then" she said pausing slightly before continuing. "I see, the stained glass i could do without, blocks the vie, but i suppose that's just in old habit, but each of us has our own desires" She said as she walked back toward her new found friend. Her eyes could make out that he was not quite leaning on the pew, but rather a few inches from it, perhapses she was wrong about what he could so, or maybe he cou;d manipulate the air molecules around him, that could account for either. Still she watched as he struggled to get a grip on the tie, and figured it might be somthing else entirely. Aura brushed a wild strand of hair from her face pushing it behind her shoulder.
Aura could not recall the last time she had gum of any sort, it had been several years to say the least. "That's fine, before i came here, my former master, helped me with control, so now i am trying to improve the raw damage i can do with the weapons i can form with the aura. One day i plan to be strong enough to wipe out any human who dares harm a mutant" She said calmly, until she had reached the end about the humans, her voice dropped a few degrees at that point. A Human harming a mutant to Aura was a crime, a mutant harming a human was akin to feeding her skunk, certain animals died so that others could live. "I have covered my walls in various materials to try and cut through them or damige them, i figure the more i use my power, the more i push it, the more powerful it will become" she went on her eyes looking out the stained glass window, despite the discomfort it gave her.
Ward stood before the younger mutant, his placid expression of complacency slowly shifting to one of dumbfounded surprise. This girl had trained her ability to such a level? He had simply assumed that each mutant was born at a certain level of strength; after all, his 'gift' acted almost entirely on reaction. If that was truly the case, what possibilities did it mean were present for mutant kind.. for himself? Ever since his powers had manifested, Ward had kept himself isolated both physically and mentally from the entirety of the world, thinking that he was cursed to an empty existence of nothingness. Yet, was this the real reason that mutants were claimed to be the next step in evolution? Because they could continue to evolve past the limits of what they were born with, instead of waiting generations like everyone else? This sort of revelation... jeeze, would every day in the Sanctuary be such an amazing learning experience as the ones he'd had so far? But there was an even bigger question pulsing within Trent's mind: Did that mean he could 'evolve' one day too?
Despite the many answers that the young man had received in his stay at the Sanctuary so far, it had only created even more questions. Yet, as Aura continued on, speaking of wiping outWard became even more curious. Was everyone in the compound except him harboring something against humans? Or, was it possible that he must've had something against 'normals' himself if he was here? But again, he didn't even have a snowball's chance in hell at coming up with results if he just asked himself these sort of things; thankfully there seemed to be a very driven mutant right in front of him who seemed to have a myriad of information that he may be able to learn a thing or two from. Leaning forward slightly towards the teenage mutant, Ward rolled his head to one side as he glanced up and down her frame.
”Study under a master, and heavy self training... there sure are a lot of tough girls here that could pass for normal in a crowd. What exactly was your old teacher a master of if they could teach another mutant how to use their power? And, why only wipe out humans that would harm mutants? Shouldn't you want to keep mutants from harming each other as well?”
"Master maybe a poor word for it, she employed me and what would become my teamates, picking us off the streets, Miracle was a mutant who could heal wounds in seconds, however a group of Humans thought her blood held the secret of agelessness. She trained us to use our powers in combat, those who did not learn quickly were cut down by the humans guns." She said bending down to scatch the ear of her pet before looking back up. She asummed that might have answered part of the question but she felt she had rambled a bit as well.
"During that time, i learned the way of things, we are Mutants the next link in human evalution and becuse we are hear, Humans can no longer be considered sentient beings. Killing a Human is like killing a dog who bit it's master ever so long you simply have to put him to sleep, Mutants will fight each other as we have inherited the violent tendencies of those before us. Still an attacker must be dealt with human or mutant and if you fail to kill that attacker, he may one day shoot you in the back. " She went on, from memory, these words had been drilled into her almost every night, Miracle had made sure of that, they were weapons.
"In any case my old master and my friends lie dead, and for that i can not forgive those animals, still you can't kill every animal a species simply becuse one bit, no matter how much we want to" She went on not quite she if she covered what we wanted to know. All she could do now was become stronger and stronger and to keep fighting, those things kept the pain a way. Reagrdless of her own feelings however she would follow any order her new masters gave her, her own morals mattered little when it came time to fulfill her job.
Ward listened to the teen's monologue, his brow furrowed as he took in the story's information, as well as the girl's opinions. If anything, it was a lot for Trent to swallow. There were mutants out there, actually living such a rough existance? The young man couldn't help but wonder whether or not it started after the registration and holding camps, but either way... It was a shame to hear such stories. It was a cold fact that there were people who were ostracized and abandoned simply because of the fact that they were mutants; to be honest, he was one of them, albeit in a privileged state. After all, wasn't he simply shipped off to whatever foreign hotel he wanted to live in after his powers manifested? A much better existence than being thrown out on the street to be picked up and taken in by a healing Mother Goose.
Still, something didn't sit quite right with Ward about the girl's outlook. The young man was certain that they were lines born of her time under the master, but that didn't ease the odd sting that the echoing words caused. To look upon humans as merely dogs was a foreign concept to Trent, and a tough pill to swallow to say the least. Though, if nothing else it was one hell of a topic for conversation if nothing else. Perhaps she had some deeper opinions of her own, and if so, they may be worth prying out through chitchat. The mutant felt he could learn things from her, possibly about his own mutation, but now with certainty towards the varying regard for human life.
Leaning back slightly as Aura finished speaking, Ward shook his head lightly, a “Tch” escaping his pursed lips in an attempt to convey a bit of mild confusion and disbelief at the teen's words. ”Now, some of that might take a bit of convincing for me, Aura. You say Humans are like dogs, and that they can't be considered sentient beings? Well, that's an interesting viewpoint, and I might not disagree with you when it comes to dog-like behavior, but there's a few things I'm hung up on... If humans aren't sentient, and we use the same thought processes as they do, wouldn't that mean we're not sentient either? I can obviously understand why you might think that they're below mutants, and I might agree there too. But personally, I'm starting to think that the existence of mutants only means one thing: all beings are NOT created equally. Sure, there are people that'd say otherwise, but it's a different world now, right? Even among mutants, no two are really equal.. that just means that humans are going to be the bottom of the barrel most of the time. So, the big question if you see what I mean would be 'Who decides the order of things?'”
Heaving his shoulders into a casual shrug, Ward tilted his head once again as he waited for a response from the teen. Boy, wasn't rhetoric fun?
"monkeys are just like humans or mutants, share many of the same thought processes, can build tools and even make beds to sleep in, and yet most would not see them as sentient, intelligent however yes. I would agree however that the world is not equal but we can not expect something so foolish. Nature itself is not equal, the inequality allows predators to eat and prey animals to breed to supply it. Right now i follow the Sanctuary so for me, that is who decides much as Miracle did before them. Their rules and orders are above my personal feelings, but certain things must be separate" She replied and it was true, if Aura was ordered to protect a human for sanctuary she would give her life to the task without question. What a person felt or wanted came second to the job so that things could run smoothly. Solders had to be willing to follow orders without question or it hurt the unit's over all ability to perform.
"All we can do is go on with out life's holding to our beliefs and go where those take us. For me that is gain power, enough to split a mountain one day, in that way i can do what i failed to do for my former team, protect them. I am curious how would you handle the current tensions between mutant and human kind?" She asked curiously, She found others beliefs to be interesting to here, because they rarely matched exactly with her own. Solkat knew what nature wanted, she could communicate with it in the most beautiful ways.
She sat down again though this time on the side of one the benches. "I Made the lamps in my bedroom from Human skulls, which i cleaved from their body's, you would be surprised how precise a cut has to be before you can get one that works just right, the spine has to cut cleanly or it just looks terrible" She went on as if discussing clothing or something else, she ahd started making furniture from the remains of her enimys a long time ago, it helped pass the time between battles, even if she had lost much of what she made, it always was fun to see the humans look upon their friends remains. She thought again on who should be in charge of the order of things but always arrived at one answer, the Order's leader Syn was who would decide such things.
