The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

JFK International Airport was the large of the New York City airports. Handling both domestic as well as international flight, JFK sprawled over a huge area.
Stepping out of the limo, Luke tipped the driver generously and then walked around to pick up his suitcase and garment bag, as well as Raina's two bags. "Have you flown much before, Raina?" Luke asked conversationally as they made their way through the doors and headed directly towards the 'Air Paris' ticket counter. Now that they were in public, Luke was doing his best to lighten the conversation even though all he really wanted to do was grab Raina and head for the nearest hotel room.
"There's a hotel right across the street... I wonder if we would have time before the flight to spend an hour or two alone?" Luke wondered, even though he knew what the answer was. Their flight, if it were leaving on time, would be departing in an hour and a half. It would take them somewhere between thirty minutes and an hour to get through security, so there was no way that they would have time to get off completely alone.
"Our first time will not be a... quicky. I'm going to take my time with this woman and make sure she enjoys herself." Luke assured his mind as he and Raina got into line at the ticket counter. "When we get over to our departure gate, there will be some shops to pick up magazines or books for the trip. Unless you've already packed something."

Raina looked up when Luke asked her if she'd flown before. She was reaching for her bags but he'd already gotten them for her. So she strode beside him trying to think of a way to be useful. "A handful of times." she answered. "but to be honest Luke... I um should have told you before I don't do well flying." she had insisted on them being as early as possible for the flight "and because of my visa it takes a little while for me to get through security." she added. "another reason for bringing so few bags..." she admitted. It was hard being of another ethnic group when flying through the states. Canada wasn't exactly bad but Raina did look a little exotic and she nearly always got pegged by cutoms. "But I've brought some anti-nauseau medicine and hopefully I don't turn green." she laughed. "I dont know... you might not like me anymore by the time the flights over." she joked mentally hoping she didn't embaress herself.
"Lets head to the gate now, I always get nervous. But I wouldn't mind picking up a few things... I wanted to see if any of the shops here had a french-english dictionay. French is a second language in Canada you know' she grinned matter-o-factly. "Though our french is a wee bit mangled and in Paris it would be more refined than I'm used to. I'd like to be able to be independent when you're not with me. So I'll want to pick up one of those."
To tell the truth Raina was completley confident in her french. So confident she was worried it might bother Luke a bit so she'd do her best to show him she could use her help.

"Well at least if you get sick on this flight you won't have to deal with it alone." Luke offered with a slight grin as the line crept closer to the ticket window, "My shoulder will be available so you can lie down and relax."
The idea of Raina lying her head on his shoulder made the whole flight seem like it would be much more enjoyable. He knew that his smile was broadening ever so slightly but he couldn't help it. The kind of alone time that this trip was going to offer looked like it might begin on the flight instead of on the ground in Paris.
"And even with your mangled French you'll be ahead of me." Luke said with a slight grimace as he moved on to Raina's comment about the language, "I know a few words here and there but not much. We'll have interpreters at the meeting if necessary but I'm pretty sure the clients speak English. In fact, thankfully for me, a lot of people in Paris speak English in order to work with tourists but otherwise I'll be depending on you to be my interpreter."
They were almost to where they could grab their tickets and Luke was automatically shifting the bags in his hands as he separated his briefcase to be carry one while checking everything else. "I had to bring my own book since airport shops aren't known for their braille selection." Luke mentioned as they walked along, "But maybe you can stay entertained with the in-flight movie instead of just reading. Hey... I could always ask if they have 'The Notebook'."
He had been teasing on the last part, but at the same time his mentioning 'The Notebook' brought back some very nice memories. That particular movie had inspired what had almost been a very... physical evening for the two of them. If they hadn't been interrupted there was no telling exactly how long things would have gone on. It was nice to be able to use that night as something to tease Raina about but he still had to wonder what her memories of the evening were like. Was she glad they had been interrupted or did she wish things had gone farther?
"Sometimes I would be really nice to have psychic powers."

Raina grinned and sucumed to a laugh "I don't know if I could handle the Notebook again." she teased right back. She took her bags from Luke as they were nearing the front of the line knowing she'd have to be responsible for her own once they got that far. "It's good you brought a book though... and I honestly hope I don't get sick. I'd rather nuzzle you because I want to... not because I'm trying to keep the floor from coming up rather fast." she admitted. "I'm exited to dust off my french." she added. "it'll be a real treat for me. Naveed would be proud of me trying it out again."
The lineup was moving quicker than she anticipated and as they took their spots with about 4 or 5 people ahead of them Raina's eyes drifted around the area and fell on a magazine rack within striding distance. At first she wasn't quite sure why her eyes weren't moving past the magazines that plastered the rack, but then the flash of red made it all to obvious. She dropped her bags stunned. "I'll be right back." she said marching off feeling worse with every step.
Standing infront of the rack forgetting all about the lineup Raina could only allow her jaw to hang open. There on the front page was a mirror image of herself in her Luke T-shirt being pulled ahead by Luke and the angle was not flattering. She looked like a complete and utter bimbo. Like some trailor-trash girl. The image was heavily shopped so that her makeup was thick and greasy and the whole grain of it was just off...
there were all sorts of captions about Luke being able to do better and wondering if this was one of his usual stints. Raina felt her hands rise to her flushing face to remind herself not to cry. She stood, hurt, embaressed, and absolutey fuming. She swiped a magazing from the rack and spun on her heels back to Luke as the vender cried out "hey!"
She walked quickly to his side and tried to remain silent holding the rolled up magazine in her hand. Then without warning she popped hitting Luke lightly on the chest with the rolled up magazine. "What the hell is this?" she demanded shocked at the tone of her own voice but unable to stop the ball from snowballing. "Did you see this?!" she demanded taking a second to realize how stupid that sounded. "well... of course you didn't see it..." she mumbled. "Luke, I'm on the cover of this magazine!" again with the obvious and she growled softly a little in her own frustration. "I'm on the front of this magazine cover in my Luke shirt and there aren't very nice things printed about us, about me all over the cover." she was begging the tears not to spill over and suddenly the person as the ticket desk cried out that they were next.

Luke looked curiously after Raina as she stepped away for a moment but, with a slight shrug of his shoulder he decided not to worry about it. His job was just to watch the bags and to hold their place in line.
"I wonder just how risque she'd like her lingerie to be?" The blind man thought as he allowed his mind to drift to a much more tantalizing subject, "And what color? Maybe one of the clerks can give me some good suggestions."
Right then Raina rejoined him in line, but something had changed. Her demeanor seemed off. Had he said something to upset her before she walked away? Suddenly Luke's mind was in damage control mode as he ran through the conversation they had been having. What could have set her off?
"What the hell is this?" Raina suddenly demanded out of the blue as she spun around and lightly tapped his chest with the rolled up magazine she had apparently gone to get, "Did you see this?! Well... of course you didn't see it..." Raina continued, her voice turning to a slight mumble as she realized what she had said. But even that slight embarrassment didn't slow her down. Immediately her voice rose in strength one more as she continued on her path, "Luke, I'm on the cover of this magazine! I'm on the front of this magazine cover in my Luke shirt and there aren't very nice things printed about us, about me all over the cover."
Luke was frozen in shock... he had known that the pictures would be in a tabloid but to be on the front cover? And today of all days they had to have already been delivered to the airport!
"Next!"
"Uh.. uh..." Luke stumbled over his words as he picked up the bags and stepped forward. "Just a sec Raina."
Turning around quickly Luke tried to smile at the woman behind the ticket counter but it came across as more of a sickly expression. "Hi... here's my passport and identification. There should already be ticket reserved for myself and my girlfriend." Thankfully, either the woman behind the counter was not a tabloid reader or she was the perfect professional. In a matter of moment the bags were checked in and Luke was holding his ticket. The woman hadn't taken nearly long enough for him to even begin to come up with an answer for Raina and as he tried to think of something to say, all he could do was draw a blank.
"Uh... we could always sue." Luke offered rather lamely, "Are they really that bad?"

"Just a sec Raina."
Now, had Raina been in her right and calm mind she'd have realized Luke had to get them checked in first but right now as she fumbled around trying to find her own passport and coming up dry she felt an intense rage. "But I need to talk about this now" she insisted as she shot the ticket woman a look slamming down her passport. This was a look of death. The look of you better not say anything out loud.
The woman got her through quickly- the quickest she'd ever gotten through and she stood on the other side with Luke. "Sue?!" she nearly yelled. She was borderling hyprventalating now "I look like a hooker!" she said bluntly hoping he'd understand by her use of words and anger just how bad these photos actually were. "I need... I need to calm down!" she admitted to herself pacing a bit and rubbing her templed. "This isn't good." she added. "it's not just about being embaressed and looking cheap... all though that's awful." she explained quieting her voice again and struggling harder than she ever had to get a control over her emotions. 'but Luke... what do you think they'll think of this at the mansion? What the kids are going to think? Fabricated or not? I don't want to lose my job there or worse lose respect infront of the students. And the aquarium... that puts me in a place where I have to deal with the public every day..." she winced and picked up her own bags again suddenly feeling the need to be independent.
"You might be able to shrug this off..." she began suddenly fearing that she'd have to deal with this again in the future. "But I think if you had to see them... had to see them every where you went... saw what I looked like ... what you look like... I don't think you could be so... non-chalant about it." In part she was trying to defend her outburst, she was also trying to talk herself through this from Luke's perspective. But really she just needed Luke to realize how bad this could really become for Raina.
Raina also didn't usually bring up Luke's blindness to that effect. She rarely mentioned it but she was delibertly pointing out here one way in which his sonar could not make up for the difference between the two.
"They're going to be always watching us." she said sadly to herself. "What if they see me when I'm all fish mode?" her voice cracked and she nearly laughed when she said fish but it was a pitful sort of sound and gave her a knot in her stomach. 'I just... I just...." she searched her thoughts. "I didn't sign up for this."
As soon as the words left her mouth she regretted them. She meant no harm for Luke she only meant this was something she really didn't understand about becoming a millionairs boyfriend. It wasn't like she was saying she wasn't up for the task... was she?

Luke was silent as he listened to Raina rant about the photos. He wanted to say something to reassure her... anything to reassure her but none of the words were coming to his mind. It was his own stupid fault that he hadn't considered just how these types of situation might affect Raina. She had no clue that it was even a possibility but he should have known better. He should have thought about this ahead of time.
"They're going to be always watching us. What if they see me when I'm all fish mode?" Raina was winding down but her voice was cracking rather pitifully, "I just... I just.... I didn't sign up for this."
Those words were like a fist being slammed into Luke's gut but he couldn't blame Raina for them. He had done his best to support her with her mutation but this side of his life would never support her in anything. All it could do was tear down the stability she had already built. The questions she had stated earlier still echoed in his mind...
"What do you think they'll think of this at the mansion? What the kids are going to think? Fabricated or not? I don't want to lose my job there or worse lose respect infront of the students. And the aquarium... that puts me in a place where I have to deal with the public every day..."
For a few moments Luke just let the silence between then remain. He didn't have any words that would give her the kind of comfort she needed. There was no way he could assure her that this type of thing would never happen again. It was a part of his life and while it was rare, it still happened.
"Raina... I'm sorry." The blind man said quietly after the pair had moved out of the main stream of people and taken a place by the wall that would provide them at least some sort of privacy, "I should have warned you about this part of my life. I should have thought about it and I didn't. That's my fault."
Taking a deep breath Luke turned his head, as though scanning the crowd around him while at the same time avoiding Raina's eyes. He knew there was no way he could promise that it wouldn't happen again but there was something he could do.
"I can give her a graceful way out... she deserves that."
"The tabloids are a part of my life." Luke continued speaking after a moment, still not looking directly at Raina, "To be honest, it's a surprise to me that no one has caught on to my being a mutant or the night time activities I do so often."
This was it... this was the moment. If he was going to give her the opportunity it had to be now. Whatever they decided he had a flight that he had to catch and while he much rather would have spent hours talking over the situation with Raina, maybe it was for the best if things happened quickly.
"I... I would never ask you to give up your job at the aquarium and more important your job at the mansion. The kids there need you. They need someone they can depend on that will always listen to them no matter what problems or situations they're facing." Luke's voice was soft as he did his best to keep it neutral. He didn't want Raina to make the wrong decision just because she saw that he was getting emotional and even hurting. She deserved to make up her own mind. "You don't have to come to Paris with me... or you can go to Paris and I'll stay somewhere else." Luke continued bluntly as he turned his face back to Raina, finally meeting her gaze, though truly he had never stopped looking at her, "This isn't what you signed up for. I thought I could give you a normal relationship but that doesn't look like it's going to happen. Maybe... maybe for your sake we should just cut things off right now."
Each of his own words were like having a knife twisted in his back. The time he spent with Raina had been the happiest time he'd had for about as long as he remembered but he couldn't ask Raina to give up her life. She had a right to live, and she had a right to live without his baggage.
"I..." Luke didn't even know what else to say and so instead, he just fell silent.

Raina was quietly listening to everything Luke said knowing he couldn't exactly do anything to fix the situation. However she felt her anger lessen and her body relax as he began aknowledging what she was upset about. Most times Raina didn't need an answer, she didn't always need someone to save her or fix things... she just needed someone to understand her and listen. When it came to arguing Raina didn't even care if she was wrong in the end so long as the other person could empathise with her. All she usually wanted was a little validation and it eased her mind and heart that Luke was giving her some.
Sometimes you think you're on the same page with someone but you're just not and it takes a situation like this before you realize one peron's a little away from the other. Raina was certainly gaining some perspective and her gut wrenched at Luke's suggestions. She didn't like any of them but knew they would all probably be for the best.
But then something he said jogged her. Jogged her memory even and she looked up at him with wide eyes. "Normal relationship?" she questioned for a moment. "who in the world, mutant or human has a normal relationship?" she went silent for a moment and then spoke up again. "Luke. I'm a mutant, I don't expect normality. I don't even know what the definition of it is..." she edged closer to him and looped her hand through his. She gave him a shakey squeeze. "I don't know how to fix this. I don't know how to deal with it..." she admitted. "but... I'm not leaving you." she stared at him intently. "I'm going to Paris with you... " she felt the familiar stir of excitement from earlier in her stomach. "but... in light of all this maybe we should um... maybe we should have seperate rooms." she knew they hadn't exactly made the decisions on the accomodations but she thought part of being an adult in a consenting relationship was knowing when boundaries were a good thing. It was best she didn't let her libido cloud things... she had to think seriously about how she would handle this... but that didn't mean she was ready to give up on Luke.
She squeezed his hand a little tighter now "I wont give up if you wont." she said sounding much more like herself. "I may have to take out a little anger on the next photographer I see... but I'm not giving up." this time she sounded more true as opposed to convincing herself. She was making a statement now.

Luke was frozen for a moment as Raina seized his hand and made her decision, but his lips curved into a slight smile. "I can honestly say that I'm glad you still want to go with me." He spoke softly as he returned Raina's hand squeeze, "And actually we have the upstairs suite which comes with a living room, bar area, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms. I figured the option of our own rooms was the right thing to do."
Setting his briefcase down Luke reached over and gently gripped Raina's shoulder, pulling her just enough that she would be forced to look directly at him. "I'm not going to give up on us either. You're to special for me to just let you slip away from me unless it was your own choice. Some stupid paparazzi definitely isn't enough to do it."
Leaning down Luke pressed his lips against Raina's for a few moments. The kiss was gentle... not asking for anything but instead just reassuring that everything was still OK between them.
"I guess we better head for our departure gate." He said a few moments later as he pulled away from the kiss. Leaning down he picked up his briefcase once more and then turned to walk toward their destination.
"Hey," Luke suddenly spoke again, his voice taking on a teasing lilt and his smile broadening slightly as he nudged Raina gently with his elbow, "Do you still need to stop in one of these shops for your dictionary?"

Raina let Luke kiss her with the full intention not to respond but couldn't help wrapping her arms around him and smiling through the kiss. This was her Luke, no stupid photographer would change that he was right.
He pulled away and mentioned about the departure gate. Raina couldn't tell any direction in the airport so she just trusted that Luke knew what he was talking about. "Sure. I think there's a kiosk over there." she said pointing to a small vender with just dictionaries and a few NYC keychains etc.
She led Luke in the direction smiling the whole way and headed for the little shop. She found a Larousse dictionary almost instantly- the colours were hard to miss! she flipped through the pages looking for a few key words. "No braille" she joked to Luke after handing her money to the vender and heading back in the direction they were already going.
"will the flight be long? I got to NYC mostly by foot and bus... I actually snuck across the border.." she admitted remembering Neena helping her establish her travel visa once she got here. "Froze a border worker in place!" she grinned. "if it wasn't for NeenaI'd probably never get through customs."
She was starting to replace her excitement with anxiety. She was more nervous for this flight than letting on. She didn't want to be sick infront of Luke and would prefer to enjoy the flight.
"Bonjour." she practiced. "Je m'appelle Raina! Ca vas?" she grinned playfully.

"Neena seems nice." Luke observed with a smile as they walked away from the kiosk and over to the departure gate, "I talked to her rather extensively the first night I came to the mansion but, I haven't had much chance since then. But as for the flight... I think it's about seven and a half hours. Plenty of time for you to nap on my shoulder." He teased.
While they stood waiting for the plane to actually board, Raina began to practice her French. Luke knew that 'bonjour' was hello but beyond that he was missing most of it. "Gotta see about learning another language... might be good to try and impress her."
Ever about ten minutes of waiting the first class passengers were invited to board the airplane. Moving forward, Luke and Raina made their way down the boarding ramp and into the plane. Flying this kind of distance, first class was much more comfortable than economy and Luke payed for the upgrade out of his own pocket. Uncle Oliver insisted on only paying for economy tickets but Luke enjoyed being able to relax on these kinds of trips.
"So what is it about flying you don't like?" Luke asked once they were seated and buckled in, "Do you get motion sickness or do you just not like heights?"
Even though this was just a casual conversation, it was still important to Luke. If Raina really had that big of a problem flying then he would do his best to try and keep their weekend trips or vacations somewhere withing driving distance instead of forcing her to endure the torture of yet another flight.
"I've fallen for her... hard." Luke finally admitted to himself, "But is it love?"

Raina and Luke chatted as they began bording the plane. She was happy her carry on bag made it through the check and as they started to move she realized Luke had gotten them first class tickets. As they made their way through the cabin she had to just stare... she'd never been first class. "Well usually I don't like being cramped..." she explained. "But I see that isn't going to be a problem." her eyes were a little wide. "once on a flight I was stuck between two people who didn't speak english and one of them was holding an infant and she kept falling asleep. I had to keep moving her a bit because her arms were drooping and I was afraid she'd drop the baby. All the while there was this toddler behind me who kept crawling under the seats and pinching and biting my feet. When I turned around to confront the parents they just told me in shakey english that their son spoke several languages! It was awful." she moaned recalling the annoying moment. "It was also a 13 hour flight. So 7 doesnt sound too bad."
She made her way to her seat all the way chatting and making small comments about her observations here and there. "I do get a little motion sickness." she added. "But with a flight this long I'll probably even out." she adjusted her seat so that it was comfortable and patted the one next to her for Luke to sit down.

After stowing his briefcase in the overhead bin, Luke took the seat right next to Raina with a smile in her direction. "Well hopefully this flight will be a good one for you without any of the problems you dealt with before."
Taking a few moments to adjust his seat to a comfortable position, Luke buckled his safety belt and then leaned back against the cushions. "So have you traveled to any countries besides Canada and the U.S. before? Ever been down to Mexico or anything?" He asked, doing his best to keep things light.
While a huge part of Luke wanted to talk about much more personal topics, like the current state of their relationship, he knew that it was probably best to stick with much safer topics. Raina wasn't sure just how close she really wanted their relationship to be, or to be more honest she didn't know how well she could handle their being any closer and Luke just had to respect that. She had a right to make a decision at her own pace, in her own time without his pressuring her or pushing her.

ooc: I meant to add that the flight experieince was inspired by my trip to Germany! LOL
ic: Raina leaned back in her chair and fumbled with the switched above her head to turn the light off. "Not really. I went to Alaska..." she laughed. "but that was a hop-skip-and-a-jump from where I was" she grinned. The grin was frozen as the flight attendant went through the emergency procedures and asked everyone to buckle up. She did so hastily. When the plane began to move a little she snatched Luke's hand and gave it a firm squeeze. "I think I'm a little nervous now." she admitted feeling a quiver in her throat and a knot in her stomach as the plane began to take off speeding down the runway soon to be air borne.
From outside planes Raina always found them to be quite interesting. Despite the laws of gravity and physics she just couldn't get her head around the idea of a giant medal bird. Though she'd often wonder what it would be like to have a mutation that allowed her to fly and to keep her mind desctracted she turned to Luke and asked, "do you ever wonder what it would be like to fly"? of course that may not mean much on it's own so she added "like some of the others?"
She knew she should be seriously thinking over the events of this morning. But somehow her mind just wanted her to relax and let go. She could deal with the magazine's when she got back.

Imagining what it was like to fly...
Luke knew that a lot of people imagined what it might be like to fly without some sort of mechanical device. He had talked to plenty of teens back in his school days that dreams about that kind of thing. Heck, he'd even talked to adults over the course of business dinners or parties that spoke about what it would be like to fly but he could honestly say he had never dreamed about it. He had one recurring dream that always popped to the forefront of his mind.
"What is it like to see?"
"I'm uh... afraid I never thought about flying to much." Luke replied with a somewhat apologetic smile, "I guess it's probably because, even growing up, I got to fly on jets and helicopters often enough that it took care of that desire."
Ok... so the last statement was an out and out lie, but he didn't want to make Raina feel bad. Blindness was something he lived with every day and because of that, it affected the way he thought about things but she had never experienced it. The feeling of flying would be practically useless without some sort of sight and with the limited range of Luke's sonar, he wouldn't be able to fly very high before he lost sight of everything around him.
"What about you? Do you dream about flying? The wind through your hair and that feeling of weightlessness?"
Even if Luke hadn't thought about it himself he had heard enough people talk about it to be able to go along with the conversation. At least they could keep things light for now, even if he didn't really understand where Raina was coming from.
