Adaptation vs. Mutation It is an observable fact in nature that when a new species of plant or animal is introduced into a previously existing eco system one of two things will happen. Either the new species will take over and destroy all its competition for life or the previously existing species will adapt in order to counteract this new threat.
What if the human race began to adapat to the mutant threat? What if the human race changed ever so subtley... without the X-Gene.
Full Description Of Idea: What I've been thinking about is what if the government were to find that certain human brains were adapting in order to cope with the new threat. The human race only used somewhere between 4-10% of their brain fuction capacity. What if, as an adaption, people began to be able to use their brain up to 15-20% instead? As an adaption I thought it might be possible for their brain to project an electrcial aura that ranged out to about 6-10 feet that would temporarily disable the X-Gene.
Examples: 1. Energy beams fired from a mutants hands would dissapear as soon as it hit the 'aura'. 2. Someone with super strength would suddenly find themselves only as strong as a normal person when they got within range to actually hit these people. 3. Someone with superspeed would be unable to move at superspeed while within the aura. If they were to already be at superspeed and suddenly strike the aura inertia would carry them forward but they would suddenly be unable to control things until they were outside of the aura. 4. Someone with special vision, senses, or other abilities would find them nullified upon entering the field.
Perhapse the government could 'discover' certain people with this adaptation and create a black ops group to go after mutants that posed a 'threat'. Obviously this would work well as a hook against the sanctuary but with just a little wrong intel they could easily target those that work with the mansion.
I like it. I like it a lot. It's about time we got some humans around that could give Issie some harder huntin'.
It's safe to say that this will work neatly into my plans for Rup.
Personally, I think this might be cool to run as more of a long-term thing (like the Haywire virus' development), instead of an all-at-once-then-DONE plot (like the Registration Act, and the Future Plot). I like the idea of these people starting to realize what their abilities are, and that first inexperienced team learning some hard lessons when they actually try to capture muties... and seein' 'em get tougher and tougher over time.

*pats luke on the back* genius Luke! i love the idea of it! If this gets approved I will be the first to volunteer for you *bows head* I have been looking for something to give CS some trouble in the government department, seeing as that was somewhat his job in the past!
Which I think would fit perfectly in the loosely affiliated branch of the government CS was from back in the day, (they specialized in capturing and killing mutants, using them as tools and such…) if you want we could try a trial run and if the mods like it they could make it official!
This could also work well in evening out the playing field in the Future in Australia!
First off. Reading this thread and being that I play Sara, I can't help but think of the scene in the movie x-men III Where Beast enters the room with the mutant that cancels out powers. You people just might learn what Sara really looks like.
Since you have already had the haywire plot, would Haywire effect humans in this adaption? Just an odd thought. I like the idea. It could turn out quite awesome.
*Smacks CS on the back.* Being that Sara has a similar history, this could effect her in similar ways as CS.
I really like this idea as well. An ongoing thing, like Calley suggested, sounds best to me.
It would be kind of cool to get a couple of playable characters to be Adapteds (rather than have all NPCs). How we'll do that, I'm not yet sure.

I don't think that this should affect the FP, though. By the time we get this figured out, the FP will likely be over.

I was picturing option 1, myself: X-genes and any effects of 'em (even launched from outside that radius) don't work within the radius. Let's face it: that's what will give the humans a fighting chance. Otherwise the fire, electric, ice, sound, earth, etc manipulators will just snipe them from outside the radius, same as always.
And personally, I'd love to run a PC like this. But I hereby vote that Luke has both dibs on an adapted character and veto-rights over all others. We can always just run it with some very nicely fleshed out NPCs, like we did at the Camps with good ol' James.
And I think it would be fun to have these guys in the FP--but maybe, for the sake of limiting the chaos, just have them in Australia. That seems to be where they're most needed, and we wouldn't want to deprive CS of his fun little playmates.
Sounds pretty interesting. I also have some questions. How far is the aura radius? If one of the Adapteds is hit with an energy beam des it make the others immune to that also or they just negate any mutant power?

Now, that would be interesting. If I understand what Syn is saying, each of the adapted actaully 'adapts' to a mutant's power. So like, if an Adapted is standing next to a mutant, the Adapted is gaining the ability to nuetralize that mutant's powers, but they don't automatically do so. That is something to think on. Maybe the Adapted powers can change and grow too. They start out having to nuetralize each power serperately, then grow to be able to nuetralize all powers.

All I can really say is... wow. I never expected this idea to take off so quickly or to be accepted so easily. Especially considering I'm one of the new kids on the block. But anyway, I thought I would post some answers to the questions that have been raised in order to explain my take on it. Obviously the mods decision stands over my own but this is where I was coming from.

Perhapse this can begun in one of the earlier stages and slowly grow. Eventually I think it would be best if the adaptation grows so that all X-Gene powers are neutralized by the aura. However, the big thing to remember in that is that things that are 'thrown' at them will not be stopped by the aura. If someone with superstrength picks up a car and tosses it at them the inertia of the car will not be stopped by the aura. Just like if someone at superspeed is running at them his/her inertia would continue carrying them forward at super speed though they would no longer be in control.

In my mind the 'haywire virus' would affect the adapted just like regular humans. They don't have an X-Gene for the virus to magnify so I don't believe they would feel any extra effects.

If final aproval is given then I would absolutely love for one of the 'adapted humans' to be my 2cd character. Personally, I would be honored by anyone else that is inspired enough by the idea to want to run with these as PCs. If the MODs think you're a good enough RPer to handle them, then in my mind you're more than welcome to one. I also have to agree that having at least some of them as PCs would make for a more interesting RP.

In my first post I suggest an aura radius of somewhere between 6-10 feet. We can obviously adjust that to be smaller or larger as necessary. I also had originally thought that this 'aura' should automatically disable the X-Gene and all powers created by the X-Gene. Telepathic and energy based attacks that are originally powered by the X-Gene would simply dissapear or fizzle out when they hit the aura. As described above, things thrown or none X-Gene weapons that are fired at them would not be affected by the aura because of the laws of intertia and such.

As I had orignally thought it out, in my mind the adaptation was only doing one thing: neutralizing the X-Gene. Any and all powers that appeared due to the X-Gene would be neutralized because their aura neutralized the source of the power, not each power as an individual item. Obviously this is up to the Mods to decide but that was where I was originally coming from.
Well... I hope that this wasn't to lengthy a post but I figured that since I started the discussion I should clear up questions on what was going on in my mind when I first came up with the idea. If there are any other questions or clarifications needed I would be glad to offer my assistance but as I said before, ultimately this is for the MODs to decide.

*nods* Those explanations clear things up for me, I think, Luke. I like the base idea of "neutralizing the X-gene" as opposed to neutralizing specific powers, and I like the 6-10ft radius that knocks X-gene and X-gene effects (like energy blasts, lightning, ice, etc) out, but leaves concrete objects (hurled cars, a speedster's physical body) alone.
Also, the 6-10ft range sounds about right to me; that's wide enough that they could shield a civilian/non-adapted teammate with their power, but not so huge that they could go overboard and shield an entire crowd, city, etc.
I think the next big question in my mind is this: when would everyone like to see the Adapted start appearing around MRO? Since it will be a long-term plot--and by long-term, I mean once these guys start appearing, they're here to stay--I personally think it's fair game to start it anytime. Probably not in the full blown "zomg! there's a whole black-ops team of these guys workin' for the military/government/police!" sense, but in the "heeeeey... Why isn't this guy dying when I try frying his brains out with my amazing powers?" sense. Aka, the characters begin to appear, and in the background, the government begins to notice this, too.
I would also think it's fair game to use them in Australia, in the FP.
Other thoughts/concerns/questions/ideas, from anyone?
I agree with Cally about timing: no alluvasudden covert team. I'd like to see a trickle of PCs and or NPCs, though maybe after the FP. It'd give people something to ooh and ahh about over the summer.

I was already planning for my third character to be something like this anyway, definitely human. I would say that the radius could be dependent on each character, but an average of 6 to 10 feet and total energy immunity sounds fair enough. Like a null void globe of protection. Otherwise there would be definite sniping going on. Of course they're still fragile humans, still able to be broken and shot and have cars thrown at them and all that fun stuff.
Needless to say, I love the idea Luke. You're full of good ideas as always.

I think if people want to try them out in Australia, that is fine with me. They might get a little confusing elsewhere in the FP, though, so perhaps we leave them in Australia for now.

I agree with Ghost on that. Everyone is confused at first and if some sort of group forms, they do it IC.
Actually, if the government forms a strike force, they may armor the Adapted up. Re-used Stalker robots, anyone?
One of the things I like about the Adapted idea is that it's so low-tech, actually--I rather loathe convenient tech, when we've got such cool mutations running around. Likewise, I shudder to think of an Adapted with roboarmor of any sort, since they've got a cool enough ability already. Give 'em guns and bullet-proof vests, but don't give 'em tech that gets in the way of how cool they inherently are, I say.
And agreed with Lori's "everyone's confused at first"--I was definitely planning for my PC to not have a clue what's going on. At first, he's going to write it off as sheer luck... and then start suspecting he's a mutant... and last of all, realize what he actually is.
Also agreed with the "we can start using them in the FP as of now, but only in Australia for reasons of minimizing OOC confusion and chaos". So GB, if you want to get started with your plans for the Land Downunder... go for it.
