The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

As Lee was thanking Tarin, she was confused as she saw a frown forming on his face. Why would he be frowning when she was thanking him for something?
When Tarin spoke, the smile slid off Lee's face and she blinked at him. "No…I'm not joking," Lee said, her voice slow and quiet. "It's so far to the mansion, with who knows who or what between here and there. And a couple minutes earlier you had said you were terrified just getting to the shop…"
Those were all reasons that a rational person would have refused to go with her. And Lee could admit that at that moment, she had not been fully rational. Not while being that worried about her son.

Boy, Tarin kind of hated that Lee wasn’t smiling anymore and that he was the reason why.
Lee clarified though and Tarin shook his head in mild disbelief, hurt evident in his expression.
Yes it was a long way to the Mansion and Tarin had absolutely no doubt in his mind that Lee could have and would have made there without him if the need had actually existed to do so.
And yes, he had said that he’d been terrified when they’d been making their way from the restaurant to the shop. He’d been pretty scared the whole time they’d been heading towards the mansion and then home too.
”You really think I would have ever stayed in the shop while you fought your way across the city knowing that something could have been wrong at the Mansion with Kevin there?”

Well. There was that, at least. When she thought about it like that, Lee didn’t actually think that he would have stayed at the shop but she still appreciated that he’d gone along.
”Well, good. Because I wouldn’t have.” Tarin said. ”And I appreciate you saving my head from a crowbar, and staying behind and taking out the guy in the shop, and making short work of the guy in the park….” Really, if they kept this up they’d be going all night.
It felt weird to just be sitting there, Tarin decided, not that he had any desire to be back outside. It was just that after everything that had happened he still felt jittery and restless. He could only imagine how Lee felt.
Sighing a bit, Tarin leaned forward and snagged the remote from the table and turned on the TV. ”Do you want to see what they news has to say or do you want to do something completely unrelated?”

Lee frowned slightly as Tarin mentioned the guy in the park. Yes, she had taken care of him quickly, and thankfully Tarin hadn't been actually hurt when he'd been knocked over while the spirits had protected her.
But if she hadn't suddenly gotten dizzy, maybe they would have had a couple moments more notice that that guy was coming.
"I'm going to have to work on that," Lee murmured. "See if I can figure out for that to not happen again."
Tarin was reaching for the remote, asking if she wanted to check what the news was saying or find a distraction. And that was a very good question. They would need to try and figure out what was going on, but at the same time, a distraction after everything that had happened would be nice as well.
"They probably aren't sharing any information about what's actually going on yet, if they even know," Lee mused. "Let's find a movie or something and we can check the news after."

Lee seemed to be thinking for a few minutes and then she spoke and Tarin frowned slightly, ”Work on what? I don’t think you could have done much differently or better…then again, I was kind of distracted trying to breathe. I’d forgotten how disorienting it is to get the breath knocked out of you.”
Lee didn’t think there’d be any good information on the news and she was probably right. No news station in their right mind would have reporters out there and considering the amount of mutant activity, Tarin couldn’t think they’d have helicopters out there either.
A movie? Again, something so mundane seemed almost wild, but Tarin knew that Lee was right and started to flip through the options.
Super hero movie? Absolutely not. Period dramas? Too boring. Documentary? Too unpredictable.
Settling on a chick flick that had been well received and that he’d never seen, Tarin started the movie and figured that if all else failed it wouldn’t be too hard to follow if they ended up talking.
”Think we’ll ever get to eat at that Chinese place?” he asked idly as the movie began.

"Hmm?" Lee asked as she turned to look at Tarin, having not realized that her musings had been out loud. "Oh. When I stopped, I'd gotten really dizzy. I was focusing on my siphoning right around us, but I was looking a lot further away to try and see anyone. Any other time I've focused on my siphoning like that, I've been looking in the same area." Lee had never really felt the need to focus on her siphoning to that degree while needing to look further away.
It was going to take some thought on how to try working on it, though, if it made her that dizzy so quickly. But she was definitely going to have time to think about that the next few days, so there really wasn't much reason to focus on it now.
Tarin got a movie going and Lee leaned back, getting comfortable to watch it as her leg started bouncing. Hearing his question, Lee turned to look at him. "I sure hope so," Lee said. "The buffet is too good to not be able to share with you. Though we haven't been having very good luck with that so far."

Lee explained what she had been talking about and Tarin remembered how she had stopped right before they’d run into that last mutant. She’d been focused on her siphoning, but looking further away?
That made sense, but was probably something for Lee to think about. And if Tarin knew anything about Lee, she’d pick the issue apart until she had figured it out. ”Let me know if I can help…” he said.
Lee leaned back into the couch and Tarin did the same as the movie started to play and Lee said the buffet was too good not to share. Tarin nodded, it had looked really good.
Lee’s leg was bouncing and Tarin wanted to try to think of solutions, but he had already been fussing a lot for the last little bit and thought it might be wise if he let Lee handle herself for a while.
”Maybe the third time will be a charm?”
The movie started in earnest, and it was fine, definitely enough to provide a distraction. Tarin was still restless though and after a while he found himself standing up to wander to the window and see if he could see anything outside.
He couldn’t, so he came back and sat down, mentally preparing a list of things he was going to have to do once all of this died down and he could see how bad things were at the shop. Hopefully just the window ended up being broken. There wasn’t much else in the front that could be wrecked and between the panic door and the back door the back was probably fine.
Sighing and sitting back, Tarin looked over at Lee, ”It’s going to be a long night.”

Lee nodded when Tarin offered to help. It was pretty much getting to the point where Lee knew that Tarin would help her with anything at any time. Though something like this, considering as far as she could tell it was solely based on her senses, Lee wasn't sure what Tarin would actually be able to help with.
Maybe once she had a few hours to think about it, Lee would be able to come up with more, but at the moment she wasn't even entirely sure there was anything that she could do beyond simply doing it again and again to see if she could desensitize herself and stop getting dizzy.
"When I start experimenting with it," Lee said after a few moments. "I may ask you to be there with me. Just in case I get really dizzy."
Tarin commented that hopefully third time would be the charm for actually eating at the Chinese restaurant, and Lee couldn't help but hope so. If things had calmed down in the city by then, maybe they could go for dinner there Friday. Then Lee remembered how they had found out about everything that was going on, about the garbage can she had pushed out of the way as she opened the door.
Maybe the following Friday would be better, she thought. And hopefully, by going there at a time when they would normally be eating that food anyway would end up working better.
Lee's leg was still bouncing as Tarin silently got up off the couch and walked over to the window. Then just as silently he came back to sit. And sighed.
Lee was already frowning slightly when Tarin commented that it was going to be a long night. "It probably is," Lee agreed. "But at least we can spend it together."

Lee had always said that it was hard to explain how her powers worked, but her explanations had always seemed to make sense to Tarin…at least to the degree that something he couldn’t experience could make sense.
What Lee was describing sounded sort of like motion sickness. Tarin hadn’t ever had any issues with motion sickness…he’d have never survived dealing with the links with spirits without being completely blind if he had. Moral support was probably going to be the name of the game here if Lee wanted him to be there.
Tarin had commented that it was going to be a long night, and Lee agreed, but Tarin had absolutely forgotten a very important piece of the puzzle that Lee had remembered. They would have each other for company, even if the night was long.
”You have no idea how glad I am that we decided to have lunch today.” Otherwise, Lee would have been at the bar and he would have been at the shop when everything had started going down. Surely they’d have been able to manage…Lee definitely would have, but everything had been so much easier together.
”I think we should pack some stuff to keep at the shop, just in case….” Tarin said as an afterthought. Not that he liked to assume that this sort of thing was going to be commonplace…but just like the panic door, it was probably better to be safe than sorry.
The movie was still going though, and if there was going to be any hope of keeping up with what was happening, Tarin figured he ought to actually try to watch it. To that end, he took a deep breath and reached out across the small space between him and Lee on the couch for her hand.

Tarin commented that he was very glad they had decided to have lunch together that day. Lee hadn't thought about it, but if they hadn't decided that, she would have been working at the bar well after the point the garbage can had been thrown through the door at the restaurant.
Lee would have only discovered what was happening later, when she had finished all of her paperwork for the day unless someone had broken one of the windows that were blocked off with metal bars when the place was closed.
Or unless Tarin had messaged her about it.
Either way, she and Tarin wouldn't have been together when it all started. And Lee almost had to pull Tarin by the hand out of the restaurant so they could get to the shop. Yes, he had recovered and Lee thought he'd done amazingly with his powers. But right off the bat Tarin had been pretty shocked, and he hadn't known about the panic door.
"I think we should pack some stuff to keep at the shop, just in case….”
Lee smiled over at Tarin quickly. "That sounds like a very good idea," Lee agreed before turning back to the movie. And as she sat there, Lee wondered why she had never actually thought of doing that herself years earlier, after all of the times that she had ended up cleaning the shop up in skirts. All the times she had ended up sitting for long hours overnight in a skirt and blouse in the chill of the shop. It was such a simple thing to do that could make life so much easier and more comfortable.
"And like I said, I can show you everything for the panic door," Lee continued, glancing over at Tarin as she spoke. "But I'm pretty sure that I told you all of the other security stuff before."
The room got silent at that point other than the movie, so Lee shifted, her leg temporarily pausing in its bouncing as Lee turned her attention to the TV.
All of a sudden, Lee felt something touch her hand without warning, and she jumped, her hand pulling back slightly before she realized that it was just Tarin. "I'm sorry!" Lee said as she reached her hand back to his. "I didn't mean to…"

She didn’t say anything when Tarin commented how glad he was that they’d been together when everything happened, but he could tell that Lee was thinking. She knew it would have been difficult so Tarin didn’t say anything.
When Tarin brought up his idea about packing some stuff for the shop, Lee thought it’s as a good idea and Tarin nodded his head, adding that to his mental list of things to do the next day. When all of this calmed down and they went to check out how bad things were, they could drop the bags off…and he could learn all the ins and outs of the panic door he hadn’t found before today.
That was still wild. But yes, Lee had definitely shown him all of the other security stuff in the incredibly brief time that they’d interacted all those years ago.
It had been quiet for a time and they’d both been watching the movie when Tarin reached for Lee’s hand. The second he touched her though, Lee jerked away and actually jumped. Tarin jumped when Lee jumped and looked at her, eyes slightly wide as she apologized and reached back for his hand.
”It’s okay…..” he said, taking her hand, ”You don’t have to apologize, I didn’t mean to startle you…” he said, and meant it. Tarin hadn’t realized Lee had been so engrossed in the movie…or had she, ”You turned your siphoning off.” he said as the pieces clicked into place. Of course she had, she was probably already bursting at the seams with energy, more wouldn’t help matters. ”I didn’t think…I’m sorry.”

Of course Tarin hadn't meant to startle her. Lee knew that. Why would he want to startle her?
And most of the time, something like him reaching for her hand would not startle her. Because normally, even if her eyes had been closed, Lee would have known he was doing it before his hand ever touched hers. Just like such an action would normally not startle most people. Because it was such a normal, simple thing.
But with the stress from that day combined with not feeling the energy boost just before the contact was made, it had startled Lee more than a little bit.
And it only took Tarin a moment to realize why it had.
He was also apologizing. Lee shook her head as she gave him a smile. "Why would you?" Lee asked, regarding how he hadn't thought about her not siphoning. "Most of the time I turn it off around you, you've got me more than a little distracted, so I don't tend to get startled when you touch me."

Lee had mentioned before that it made her more than a bit off balance when she turned off her siphoning. She’d said that when she couldn’t feel the people around her it was difficult to orient herself in space.
Tarin wasn’t really apologizing because he thought he’d done something wrong, it was more because Lee had been startled and he wished that she hadn’t. There was no way for him to know when she turned her powers on and off unless she told him, and this time she hadn’t.
She was smiling again though and Tarin shrugged a little when Lee asked how he would have realized she’d turned off her siphoning. He was generally pretty good at being able to tell things about Lee…but as he’d thought before, he’d have had no way of telling this time unless Lee had clued him in. ”Guess I can’t read minds.”
Lee kept speaking though and Tarin’s smile grew to a full on grin. Most of the time when she could remember to turn her siphoning off around him they were already touching, so no, it wouldn’t startle her. Tarin didn’t point that out though, he just squeezed her hand a little. ”Well, now you won’t be startled.” he said. ”Want a heads up if I do it again?”

SaidSo Tarin couldn't read minds? Lee laughed as she looked up at him. "Damn it. I was counting on that for christmas," Lee teased. "Now how do I know you'll get me what I want?"
Not that Lee was actually concerned about that. She honestly hadn't even thought about christmas until that moment, and Lee really didn't have any worries about Tarin managing to come up with something thoughtful.
But it was fun to tease.
Tarin then squeezed her hand and pointed out that now she wouldn't be startled. Lee smiled over at him as she squeezed his hand back. "That's true," Lee said softly. Then she nodded. "If you can remember. But it should get better as the stress from today eases."
