The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

She smirked a little as Maya mentioned her own mutation. In all honesty, she thought that was kind of hot. Though she definitely thought that, it wasn't what the younger woman said. "That's kind of awesome," she said with a light grin, her hair now going from blue to the default brown, though only a bit of it could be seen through the hoodie. The light on her hands, however, died completely. For the first time that day, she was completely calm, her emotions neutral.
Though, it was worth noting that her hair rarely stayed its natural brunette for very long.
"A side effect of mine is that hair dye doesn't take to my hair," she said after a moment, just to break the silence that was settling in. "I'd tried that to hide my abilities, and as soon as my power activates, the dye just...disappears, like my hair eats it or something." She gave a shrug, smiling just a little. She felt so much better now that she wasn't running around in a skimpy outfit and tripping over things.
The girl was beginning to chill out, or at least that was what Maya guessed as the light went away, and her hair turned a more conventional color. Good. She still had a dinner to finish, and she really did not want to put anyone on edge while doing it. She also did not go into any more elaborate detail about her own powers. Skye could ask if she wanted to know.
>>"A side effect of mine is that hair dye doesn't take to my hair. I'd tried that to hide my abilities, and as soon as my power activates, the dye just...disappears, like my hair eats it or something."
"Well, yeah, but... you get... how many shades, on your own?" Maya ventured, sipping some beer "I mean, gotta be cheaper than hair dye..."

Skye was glad she was able to relax now; as good as the emotions may have looked on her, there was nothing like good old neutrality; something that was very hard to maintain for a girl like her. Though she'd gotten better over the years about keeping cool, she was nowhere near perfect, as her cycling spectrum of hair just today had proven.
"Yeah, that's true. I get a wide selection, though I can't just pick and choose, and even I don't have the associated emotions down to an exact science. There are a lot of grey areas. Though...if I could pick and choose, I'd pick the purple, but that's not a good feeling it's associated with," she said with a shrug.
She leaned back, relaxing even more as Maya sipped her beer. She sort of wondered if the other woman knew the waitress she was talking too wasn't legally old enough to drink. But she guessed that didn't matter so much.
"So, where you doing anything after you got done here? I don't want to intrude or anything, but I think it'd be cool to hang out a little."
Changing hair color was definitely an interesting side effect to have for someone's mutation. Changing eye colors, sure, everyone had that, it was basically a default setting for being a mutant, but hair... that was a lot more funky to look at.
>>"Yeah, that's true. I get a wide selection, though I can't just pick and choose, and even I don't have the associated emotions down to an exact science. There are a lot of grey areas. Though...if I could pick and choose, I'd pick the purple, but that's not a good feeling it's associated with,"
"I see" Maya nodded. Emotions and powers often interacted, and in this case, Skye probably had a hard time hiding one because of the other. Purple hair was cool, but only having purple hair when you were sad... or whatever, that was kind of taking a lot of the fun out of the mutation.
>>"So, where you doing anything after you got done here? I don't want to intrude or anything, but I think it'd be cool to hang out a little."
"Sure" Maya smiled, finishing her sandwich "Didn't really have any plans... I mean, I'm done patrolling for the night, so. Unless some sh** seriously hits the fan out there, I'm off duty. Anywhere you'd like to go? I'm assuming you don't usually hang out at your own workplace..."

As Maya agreed to hang out, Skye's hair turned colors again, though this time it was more of an orange hue, with little sparks of orange light flickering from her hands that were resting on the table. She gave a smile; but orange was one of those odd colors that could mean a number of things. She knew it was a good feeling, but...like she'd said, it was hard to break down to an exact science.
"Sweet," she replied, thinking a moment, "Well, I haven't really been in the city long enough to know where there is to go," she admitted. "It's been maybe a couple of weeks, so I'm sort of at a loss on that front. Speaking of which, getting lost seems to be something I'm good at."
She gave a light giggle as she thought a moment. "Maybe somewhere we can talk. And yeah, somewhere that isn't here. Especially after the wonderful first day I've had." She gave a snort at her own dry comment.
Skye's hair changes fascinated Maya; she smiled as she saw the new color, and the flickering light that went with it. It was such a simple yet elegant power. And fun to watch. She wondered what orange stood for. Excitement?...
>>"Sweet. Well, I haven't really been in the city long enough to know where there is to go. It's been maybe a couple of weeks, so I'm sort of at a loss on that front. Speaking of which, getting lost seems to be something I'm good at."
"That's just a New York thing." Maya grinned "I mean, I walk through mirrors. I get lost all the freaking time. And end up in weird basements."
>>"Maybe somewhere we can talk. And yeah, somewhere that isn't here. Especially after the wonderful first day I've had."
Maya nodded and stood up, finishing her drink.
"I know a bar down the street. It's a pretty chill place, and no loud music." she suggested, picking up her things "And I wouldn't worry about your first day too much. It will only get better from here..."
She giggled a little. "New York thing. Got it. Where I'm from there's one bar, one store, one restaurant that doesn't serve exclusively seafood. Anything fancy is at least a fifteen minute drive away, and if you want a city, that's probably an hour at least." But truth be told, she was liking it here.
Bar? That sounded fun. And like the perfect excuse to use her fake ID. It really didn't get a lot of love in Maine; small port town, one bar...it didn't take long for them to know her. But here? Perfect. She stood to her feet, stretching a little. "Yeah, it's just a little more fast paced than what I'm used to. Should get better with time." She shrugged, prepared to follow the other woman. Though since her hideous top was the only thing she had under the hoodie....
Getting lost in New York was completely normal, even for people that lived there. Maya had ended up in some interesting place, courtesy of the weird directions of the mirror world.
>>"New York thing. Got it. Where I'm from there's one bar, one store, one restaurant that doesn't serve exclusively seafood. Anything fancy is at least a fifteen minute drive away, and if you want a city, that's probably an hour at least."
"Geez, where are you from, Ohio?" Maya grinned. It sounded like the perfect American small town hellscape. Probably Ohio. A gilr like her definitely needed to get acquainted with a bigger city.
>>"Yeah, it's just a little more fast paced than what I'm used to. Should get better with time."
"I promise it will." Maya smirked as they got ready to go "So... you want a mirrorwalk, or would you rather walk like a normal person?" she asked, holding out a hand.

Skye blushed lightly, but her hair and lights, notably didn't change color. "Port Haven, Maine, actually," she said sheepishly. "I imagine it's what Ohio would be like if it was on the coast. It's a little port town, quiet, but it's a better place to retire than it is to grow up," she added with a dry laugh.
She took the offered hand, smiling softly. "This time, I think just a normal walk. Honestly I've had enough excitement for today, between the crappy first day and almost going nova at my new job..." she giggled just a little though, as funny as it would have been for her to have done that. Maybe it was best to save that little number for her last day instead of her first, after all.
Walking outside, she took a breath, enjoying air that didn't smell like beer and chicken wings. Maybe this wasn't such a horrible day after all.
Just a small town girl, coming to New York to start a more interesting life...
>>"Port Haven, Maine, actually. I imagine it's what Ohio would be like if it was on the coast. It's a little port town, quiet, but it's a better place to retire than it is to grow up,"
Maya nodded with a smirk. Small town was still small town, even if it had a beach, and less cornfields. No wonder she felt a little overwhelmed in the city on her first working day. Maya offered to take a shortcut, but Skye didn't take the offer.
>>"This time, I think just a normal walk. Honestly I've had enough excitement for today, between the crappy first day and almost going nova at my new job..."
Maya nodded, and they walked out together. The place was not that far anyway.
"So... what are the long-term plans? Other than the bar gig?"

While the mirror walk did sound interesting, Skye didn't think she was in the mindset to fully appreciate it. It'd been a rough day, after all. Aside from Maya being nice, that is.
Besides, it wasn't a very far walk, she just had to remember exactly where she was and where she was going to avoid getting lost later. Again. She seemed rather good at getting lost, but maybe Maya was right and it was the city's fault.
Then came the question that broke her train of thought. It was an important question, and one Skye hadn't thought too much about until recently. Recently as in right this second because 'getting off of my uncle's couch' did not seem like a suitable answer.
"Well, I know I don't wanna wear that ugly uniform forever, that's for sure," she said with a dry laugh. "I know I want to do some good in the world. Not sure how though. I've thought about journalism, maybe, but I'm not sure how to get there. And of course, I'd like to get out of my uncle's apartment at some point. He's been nice in helping me find my footing, but my own space is something else I really need."
Thinking about it, she really did want those things for herself. She couldn't be aost, dependent kid forever, after all.
Waitresses in New York from small towns did not usually plan on being waitresses in New York. Not permanently, anyway. It was a good starting job to find one's sea legs, and get used to the city; but it wasn't exactly a career goal.
>>"Well, I know I don't wanna wear that ugly uniform forever, that's for sure. I know I want to do some good in the world. Not sure how though. I've thought about journalism, maybe, but I'm not sure how to get there."
"Get a camera and find a vigilante to follow around." Maya smirked, briefly thinking of Maxine. It was not exactly the pinnacle of journalism, but it seemed to be highly sought after. Otherwise, people went to school to do actual journalism work. Sometimes they even made money.
>>"And of course, I'd like to get out of my uncle's apartment at some point. He's been nice in helping me find my footing, but my own space is something else I really need."
Maya nodded.
"Well, if you need out of there, there are always rooms at Xavier's" she noted "Most mutant kids that come to New York end up there, but we also have residents who are not in school... like me."

"Heh, well that would be a start," she contemplated, looking over the other girl as they walked together. This really was a nice change to a bad day, and as Maya spoke more, it was actually starting to look even better.
She thought it over, weighing the words; it sounded like a good idea. Then, she could save money easier, and have an actual bed to crash on instead of just an old pull out couch that was probably older than she was.
"That actually sounds like a good idea; at least while I get on my feet. Maybe even try to get enrolled in school for journalism. Of course it'd also be nice to get a reign in on...this." She held up an orange-lit hand with a smile. "At least, I'd like to learn what all these damn colors mean instead of just guessing..."
She tucked an orange piece of hair behind her ear as her eyes sparkled a little bit, a smirk still plastered on her face.
The city needed some decent journalists. Especially mutants. The news that got reported were often completely fake, or so biased that even the neutral ones did more harm than good. Maya tended to support all aspirations of mutant kids, but this was especially important. She also mentioned that if Skye needed a place to crash, Xavier's was always open.
>>"That actually sounds like a good idea; at least while I get on my feet. Maybe even try to get enrolled in school for journalism. Of course it'd also be nice to get a reign in on...this."
This being her powers. Maya smirked a bit.
>>"At least, I'd like to learn what all these damn colors mean instead of just guessing..."
"Well, we can work on that. I actually run power training for the kids at the school. We have a room for it and everything..." she paused "Would you like to come and take a look around? I can give you the tour..."

And just like that, the conversation turned from pleasure to business. Not that Skye actually minded; this was important, after all. More important than using a fake ID to get drinks. Though it was possible the plan was to do that first. She planned on taking it easy, anyway.
"Seems I'm pretty fortunate to have run into you, then, she said with a sly smirk, her brown eyes darting over to the other woman.
Training? Tour? That did sound like a pretty great idea, actually. It'd be nice to actually get a handle of her powers instead of simply working around them as she had since they surfaced. Emotions were a difficult thing to keep a reign in, especially for an eighteen year old girl.
"I'd be down for that," she said brightly after a moment. After all, it seemed like a good idea. And if the other people there were this attractive....yep. Definitely a good idea. For more than one reason.
