The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Ren looked over the spark plugs in his Mustang one last time, to make sure everything was in it's proper place. Sure enough it all looked good. He smiled as he let the Mustang's hood fall and latch into place. That was the last part of the tune-up on his baby. It took all day to change out the shocks, spark plugs and everything else needed, but it was finally done and Ren felt great about the work done. He ran a hand through his hair and realized to late that his hands were still covered in oil and grime. He just sighed and pulled a rag out of his pocket to wipe off his hands. Oh well, it would all come out in a shower anyway. He really should take one now but he still wanted to go for a run today and there was no point in cleaning up if he was just going to get sweaty again.
After changing into some jogging pants and a hoodie he walk outside and stopped. It surprised him to see that the sun was already well on it’s way past the horizon. He was probably inviting trouble going to the park now, but there really wasn’t much he had to worry about. He only lived a few blocks away so it wouldn’t take him long to get there, but he didn’t want to be out too late. He would just make it a two mile run instead of the usual five.
Ren let his mind wander as filled his lungs with brisk autumn air and ran. Like most people he loved this time of year. Watching the leaves fall and feeling the crisp, cold air invigorate his lungs were some of the many things that he missed while in California. It may not be the Ozark trail or the dense forests of Wyoming, but there was something special about fall in Central park. It made him feel at home. His thoughts slowly drifted from happy thoughts of returning home to how he should move forward.
He was able to buy a decent apartment from selling his store so no worries there, and with what he made at the garage he could keep up with bills. He wouldn’t have much extra, but he could make it work. The real question was whether or not he would be happy with that life. He could see himself taking over the business and being content, but Ren couldn’t help but feel like that wouldn’t be enough. He had other talents, things he enjoyed doing more than just fixing cars. He felt limiting himself to only that was a waste of his talents. He missed designed and building things with his hands. Not to mention this power he had. Shouldn’t he do more with it? He knew what he did when he was younger wasn’t the right way to go about things but there had to be something more. Just look at what the the X-men did. Working hand in hand with the NYPD, saving lives and taking on larger than life problems. They were celebrated as heroes and he could do what they could but was stuck being a friendly, local mechanic. Maybe he should talk to his sister, see if there was anything he could do at the station. He didn’t like the idea of ‘coming out’ so to speak, but maybe it was time.
“Look who we have here.”
Ren stopped and looked around for the source of the voice. It sounded close, but he didn't see anybody around.
He heard that voice again. “A pretty little thing like you shouldn’t be out all by yourself at night. Who knows what could happen to you.”
Another man cut it. “Come on dude, stop toying with the stuck up slut and let’s just get this over with.”
Finally Ren saw a small group of guys by a nearby fountain. They weren’t calling him out they were harassing a young women, and it sounded like they wanted to do more than that. There was no reason for him to get involved. He should just call the police and leave. ’There’s no way they would get here in time.’
“Clam down Charlie. You’ll get your turn.” This was the first voice speaking again. He was tall average looking and wearing a blue button down shirt. He sounded annoyed that his buddy interrupted.
The young blonde thought that this would be a good time to try and escape, but must not have noticed the third creep coming up behind her. She ran straight into him. This man was big. He was well over 6’ and wore a plaid jacket. He almost looked like a lumberjack. He just laughed at the attempted escape and pushed her back towards the fountain.
Ren couldn’t just watch this happen. Old habits were hard to break He started to make himself denser and made a beeline for closest guy. Thankfully they were to focused on who they thought would be their plaything so Ren was able to take the first guy out before anybody knew what was going on.
“Come on honey, this won’t take…” That was when Ren came sprinting out of the darkness and sucker punched the first man in the gut. As the creep doubled over Ren grabbed his head and smashed it into his rising knee. The man’s nose broke instantly and he was knocked out cold.
Ren didn’t wait for the first guy to hit the ground before he was moving towards Charlie. Who, surprisingly, had enough presence of mind to pull out a knife. Charlie made a wild stab towards Ren, but Ren didn’t care. He was dense enough now that a knife wasn’t going to do anything. He just ignored it as he made his move. The stab was well aimed, Ren felt the blade glance off his ribs, but it might as well have been made out of foam for all the damage it did. Ren hit the man's ribs with everything he had and felt them shatter. Hopefully one didn’t puncture a lung, but Ren was angry enough that he didn’t care either way. The stranger fell over gasping for air and grabbing his chest he was down for the count. Only one left.
Ren turned and saw the big dude in plaid had been hiding a gun in his jacket and it was now aimed at him. This was going to hurt. Ren made sure he was at full density then rushed forward. The creep was able to pull the trigger once, twice before Ren ran him down. No fancy moves or hits, Ren just ran into him at full speed. Almost a ton of mass hit the would be rapist at 15 mph. The mountain man wanna be was lifted off his feet and thrown a few meters back. Probably had a few broken bones and hopefully a snapped spine from whiplash.
Ren let himself go back to normal. Hunger and exhaustion hit him almost instantly. He pulled an energy bar out of his pocket and looked around the fountain for the young women. She was long gone. Smart girl, she ran as soon as she saw a chance. Ren quickly ate his snack and figured he should probably get far away too.
Being in Central park after dark was not very high on Svetlana's list lately; not since she stopped actively patrolling as a vigilante, and definitely not since she had been kidnapped by SUPER. And yet, she was out now, just after sundown. It was by far not the most dangerous part of the night, or the most dangerous part of the city, but it was enough to put her slightly on edge. She knew she could take care of herself, as long as run-of-the-mill creeps or thugs were involved. SUPER, however... that was a whole other story.
Sveta was on her way back to Haven now, after having taken a long and peaceful sunset walk in the park. She took the clearest and fastest route, walkign at a brisk pace... until she heard the gun shots. Gun shots in Central Park were never good.
Following her old vigilante instincts without realizing it, Sveta made a beeline towards the source of the sound. As she moved, she saw the figure of a young woman running in the opposite direction; she looked scared, and her clothing was out of place. A victim, fleeing from the scene, most likely. Sveta picked up pace, letting her run, assuming she'd call the cops sooner or later. But by the time she got to the fountain, she had to conclude that she had missed all the action.
Three men were down, and one standing. The three down looked definitely bulkier than the winner... but also worse for the wear. Sveta paused, taking in the scene, ready to fight or flee if it turned out that she had seriously misread the situation.
The guy in the hoodie was munching on an energy bar. Also, he had bullet holes in his hoodie.
"Hey, dude. Are you okay?" Sveta ventured, stepping forward from her cover. One of the men on the ground groaned and wheezed like he had just had his chest kicked in. "Tell me dey deserved it..."

A feminine voice called out to him from nearby. At first he assumed it was the young women from before, but after seeing the source of this new voice he quickly realized that this blonde was someone else. Someone that might have seen what happened. Ren finished his energy bar and walked towards poor, broken Charlie.
Ren then gave a Charlie a quick kick to the head to knock him out then sat down on the edge of the fountain. Was that a Russian accent he was hearing? He looked around at the men wondering, for a moment, contemplating if they did deserve the damage he did to them.
"Considering they were attacking a defenseless women" he paused then nodded "I'm going to say yes. They deserve every broken bone."
Ren rinsed his hands off in the fountain finally clearing away the last of the grime off them. He then splashed his face with the cold water to help with the adrenaline rush that always came after a fight. That's when he noticed the long tear and bullet holes in his hoodie. At least it was an old one. He needed to leave before this Russian stranger started asking to many more questions. Looking at her Ren couldn't help but notice how attractive she was.
'You just stopped a rape and your thinking about how attractive this women is? What is wrong with you?' Ren mentally admonished himself then pushed those thoughts aside.
"As to your first question, yeah I'm okay." Ren gestured towards the damage done to his hoodie "This is just an old hoodie. One of the creeps pulled at it and it ripped, the holes were already there." He then lifted his hoodie up a bit to show his side. "See, no damage."
That was a pretty weak lie, which made sense. Ren was a bad liar. He was hoping that since he didn't have any visible wounds she would buy it.
All three men were unconscious... well, two had been already, and one was unconscious now that the guy had kicked him in the head. Not that Svetlana was judging him. She had done a lot worse in her time than kicking a guy that was already down. In the head.
>>"Considering they were attacking a defenseless women I'm going to say yes. They deserve every broken bone."
Okay, so she had guessed the story right: The woman she had seen running away had been attacked by the three dudes, who in turn had been taken down by the guy in the hoodie. Sveta arched an eyebrow. There had to be more to the story than that.
>>"As to your first question, yeah I'm okay. This is just an old hoodie. One of the creeps pulled at it and it ripped, the holes were already there. See, no damage."
Well, at least he was not lying about the damage. That was good; Sveta did not want him to suddenly collapse at her feet from secret blood loss or some other heroic sh**. Still, she did not believe for a second that he had gotten away from a gun and knife fight unscathed out of sheer luck.
"So, you are some kind of a martial arts expert den?" she ventured, casually stepping closer and kicking the guy away from the third guy's vicinity. Just in case. "I mean, don't get me wrong... dose are three pretty big dudes."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
Ren stood up and brushed the back of his pants off. "Nah, I'm just a mechanic." The effects of the adrenaline were starting to wear off and he was starting to feel more relaxed. "As hard as it may be to believe I was just on run and happen to be in the right place at the right time." He shrugged "I got lucky, my name's Ren by the way."
Why did he feel the need to hide that he was a mutant. Without his mutation he would have died at least two different times in that fight. Ren walked over the Charlie's knife and picked it up off the cobblestones. "Actually..." was he really going to trust this stranger? Yeah he was, there was no real reason why he shouldn't. What was the worst that could happen? It was time he started embracing this side of himself. He took a deep breath and made himself dense enough that the knife couldn't pierce his skin. "This is why I came out that fight undamaged." He put the blade to the skin of his arm then pushed until the blade snapped and Ren was left with just the handle. He threw that into the grass and let himself go back to normal. Ren stood there feeling slightly awkward. Why didn't he just tell her? It was kinda stupid to show off like that. Oh well, no use in worrying about that now.
Sveta did not believe for a second that someone would take down the three guys, one with a gun and one with a knife, without any powers, or at least previous knowledge of combat. She had been in situations exactly like this, and she knew how they worked. The many was definitely hiding something. Not that she could blame him for it.
>>"Nah, I'm just a mechanic. As hard as it may be to believe I was just on run and happen to be in the right place at the right time. I got lucky, my name's Ren by the way."
"Svetlana." she waved her hand a little, her usual gesture for greeting someone instead of offering a hand. Since it was likely the guy had powers, she kept a safe distance for now. Car mechanic. She did not doubt he was that, but he was also probably more. Sveta paused, waiting for him to make a decision. At this point, he could end the conversation and walk away, call the cops, question her... any number of things. Sveta could see it in his face when the decision was finally made.
>>"Actually... This is why I came out that fight undamaged."
She watched as he pushed the knife against his skin. The knife snapped first. She had been right. Powers. She did not look very surprised at all.
"I figured you had an advantage" she smirked, nodding "So... do you do this kind of thing in your free time, or was this a one time thing?"
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
To his surprise Svetlana didn't show any sign of being surprised herself when the knife snapped. Ren was starting to realize how isolated he kept himself. She smirked and he felt even more foolish for trying to show off. Shaking of off his embarrassment, he took a few steps closer to the Russian and was surprised that he actually still felt really good. Maybe he still had some adrenaline pumping through his system or maybe he was just excited to finally be sharing his secret. Finally getting it off his chest felt surprisingly good.
>>"So... do you do this kind of thing in your free time, or was this a one time thing?"
Ren had some flashes of his teenage years. Going around the streets as Cerberus. Did he really go by Cerberus? He should have had a better name. "I wouldn't say it was a one time thing, but I don't do it as much as I use to." Saving the young women did feel good though, maybe he should make this a habit again. He looked around and the three goons that were broken and, thankfully, still unconscious. As long as he didn't actually kill anyone it would be fine. He also realized that they were having a conversation surrounded by Ren's victims. He looked at Svetlana "Maybe we could walk and talk? I don't really want to be here when they wake up or somebody else walks by."
Whatever spectacular reaction - fear, surprise, excitement - the guy had expected from Svetlana, she did not really show any of it. She dealt with mutants often enough in her everyday life not to be surprised when someone displayed their powers. Unless they were really unusual powers. This guy seemed to have a nice, solid, classic physical mutation. She could appreciate that.
>>"I wouldn't say it was a one time thing, but I don't do it as much as I use to."
Oh, so this was not his first stint as a vigilante. That was good, at least. Sveta was not sure what she would have done with a complete rookie. Send them home, probably?...
>>"Maybe we could walk and talk? I don't really want to be here when they wake up or somebody else walks by."
"Yeah no kidding." Sveta chuckled. Vigilantism 101: Do not be there when the cops arrive. She tilted her head, listening for a moment before her ears picked up the sirens in the distance. "Yup, let's go. Come on."
She turned and walked, picking a route that would take them out of sight fast, and eventually make a beeline to the edge of the part.
"I used to do the vigilante thing once upon a time" she smirked as they walked "Kinda sad that New York provides so many opportunities for it. You got a day job too?"
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
Ren jogged a couple of steps to fall in line besides his new companion. Now that he heard sirens he was a lot happier having her here. Two people walking together was a lot less suspicious then one guy in a ripped up hoodie. She didn't question his mutation at all. Was she just use to dealing with mutants or was she maybe one herself? She did say that she use to be a vigilante too.
>>"Kinda sad that New York provides so man opportunities for it. You got a day job too?"
Ren nodded "Yeah, I'm a mechanic in my father's garage." He debated for a moment and then continued so he wouldn't sound so...average. "I used to own a shop in LA actually. I would make custom furnishings and some art pieces. It was nice making things for other people." Ren smiled remembering how nice his life was just a few months ago. Yes he loved this city, but back in LA he was his own boss. He shop was becoming more and more popular and he was starting to make a name for himself. He enjoyed the varied night life and let's face it, the beaches here didn't really hold a candle to those in California. "What about you Svetlana, do you spend most nights running towards gunshots?"
It was interesting to know what people did when they were not doing the vigilante thing. In Sveta's experience, lone defenders like this guy could come from all walks of life, but each and every one of them had a story. Some were darker, or more complicated, than others.
>>"Yeah, I'm a mechanic in my father's garage. I used to own a shop in LA actually. I would make custom furnishings and some art pieces. It was nice making things for other people."
Sveta smiled a little. Mechanic, craftsman. He seemed like a decent guy. The kinda guy that would run to rescue a girl in a hoodie. In the end, some vigilante stories were simpler than others.
>>"What about you Svetlana, do you spend most nights running towards gunshots?"
"Not anymore" Sveta chuckled "But old habits die hard..." she shrugged "I still work on helping people. I just do it as part of a team now, I guess. Which is strange, to tell the truth." she shrugged again, looking up at Ren "So... dat's your power? You're invulnerable?"
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
Ren smiled then shook his head. "That would be nice but umm...that's not quite it." Ren thought a moment about how much about his power he should tell her. Svetlana seemed friendly enough, but he still didn't know anything about her. On the other hand he had come this far. "I can make myself more dense. Skin, muscle, bone, just about everything. I become stronger and can take quite the beating, but I wouldn't say I was invulnerable."
Ren thought about what little he knew about this person walking next to him. "Svetlana, would I be right in assuming that you're a mutant?" She ran towards danger, worked as part of team and showed zero surprise when he showed off his power. "You wouldn't be part of the uh, x-men would you?" He felt kind of dumb asking but at the same time it made sense to him. He didn't know of any other teams of mutants that worked together. He was pretty sure that the x-men wore uniforms, but maybe she was off duty. It didn't help that he had been on the other side of the country for close to a decade so while Ren had seen some x-men clips in the news and online it was mostly about the team on the west coast.
Invulnerability was one of the Holy Grails of mutant powers. Everyone talked about it, but it was extremely rare to actually see it used. Sure, many people had powers that could render them temporarily really hard to hurt... but true invulnerability, that was something else, a whole different power all on its own.
>>"That would be nice but umm...that's not quite it. I can make myself more dense. Skin, muscle, bone, just about everything. I become stronger and can take quite the beating, but I wouldn't say I was invulnerable."
"Ah. I see." Sveta nodded. Density, then. Still a very useful power, and judging from the fact that he had mowed three thugs down, and survived a knife attack and multiple shots, Ren knew how to use it well too. She wondered what would happen if she touched him. Or if she kissed him. Was there such a thing as too much body density, for a mutant like him? Would he, what, turn to stone?... Sveta's mind went to the worst place possible, so she quickly got off that train of thought.
>>"Svetlana, would I be right in assuming that you're a mutant? You wouldn't be part of the uh, x-men would you?"
She smiled a little. This had to be strange for the guy, running into someone like her.
"No, not for a long time. I worked with them briefly... wasn't a good fit." she shrugged "Yes, I am a mutant... but my powers are not as flashy as yours." she glanced at Ren as they walked "You must feel like you just had a bucket of coffee. Well... that's me."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
She was right he felt like he could still run for miles. "So what, you're just kind of, like, a walking energy boost?" Usually after a fight like that not only was Ren hungry but he was pretty tired. Dialing it all the way up to max tended to take a toll on him. Thinking about it he had realized that it had been a quite a few hours since he ate, save for the energy bar, and he defiantly could go for some food. "Hey Svet, I'm enjoying this conversation, your really the only other mutant I've had a chance to talk, but I'm also really hungry. I know a place, Toni's, it's only a couple blocks away. I admit it's not the best food, but you get a pretty good sized portion for what you're paying. Any chance you would want to join me?"
Sure he had known her for all of ten minutes and he knew how it looked but he really needed some food. His power came with some draw backs. One of the prices for being able to lift a literal ton was a stupid fast metabolism. Ren tried to eat on the healthier side of things, but he also needed to pack away an extra few thousand calories whenever he used his power. It could be a tricky balance some days.
Talking about the coffee buzz was as far as Sveta was going to go with explaining her powers for now. The guy looked like good people, but she had learned the hard way not to disclose her abilities within five minutes of meeting a random mutant. She didn't exactly lie, but she was not going to info dump Ren either. That could wait.
>>"So what, you're just kind of, like, a walking energy boost?"
"Yeah. Kinda." Sveta nodded with a smirk.
Some mutants got dizzy or tired after using their powers. Some had the same after spending time within Sveta's aura, or getting booster by her powers. It made sense for someone with a physical mutation to want to get a bite after a fight. And, honestly, food did sound good. And it was not like they had anywhere else to go to talk some more.
"Sure, sounds good." Sveta nodded, following along as they walked to the diner.
"So, you know this area well? Have you been living here for long?"
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
"I know the area fairly well. I moved to this part of the city about a year ago. I was living down in LA before that." He looked around at the apartment buildings and small shops that lined each side of the road and compared them to what he remembered from the streets of LA "The night life there was a bit different. It was louder, more in your face."
He remembered the flashing neon signs constantly trying to grab his attention. The food trucks out at all hours by the beach and the roaming club/bar hoppers stumbling down the sidewalk. Ren knew that New York could be just as loud and busy but it felt different to Ren somehow.
"There it seemed like everyone and everything wanted something from you. Here people mostly keep to themselves. Don't get me wrong, I had my fair share of fun down there." A few quick memories of college parties and late nights at the bar came back to him. "I think that part of my life is behind me though. It's time to start something new."
Ren ran his hand through his hair and scratched the back of his head. "Of course I have no idea what that new thing is. Maybe I'll reopen my store or after things calm down I might start traveling. There really aren't to many exciting places to go climbing around here. I'll probably be stuck in my dad's shop for a bit longer, but I can't say things have been dull around there." Ren realized that he was starting to ramble. 'There you go spilling out your hopes and dreams.Good job loser.'
"Sorry, I've droned on enough. um...What about you? What do you and this mysterious team normally do?"
