The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Celeste couldn't help but laugh after Angua went and sulked under the tree. She couldn't really blame her - if she was a dog, she would hate to be given a bath. And if she was a dog, she'd probably go get in a river or something just to spite whoever bathed her.
Celeste followed Gawain into the mansion, thinking of some small talk as she followed him into the dorm wing. "So, Gawain, do you know where that name comes from?" It really was the only thing that came into her mind at the time - she was relatively distracted enjoying the new areas of the mansion she had never been in.
>> "You can use the shower in here. I'll go use mine. Meet you here in a few?"
She nodded once they arrived at their destination. "Sure, see you in a bit." She went ahead and hopped in the shower. She took a little longer than Gawain did, enjoying the really good water pressure. Her and Norma's little apartment wasn't too great when it came to that.
When she came out, her hair was half-dry/half-wet still, but was no longer bunned. Her hair fell right past her shoulder blades. She wore her initial outfit that she was found with in the Maze. Once she saw Gawain, she smiled. "Sorry, hopefully you weren't waiting too long."
>>"So, Gawain, do you know where that name comes from?"
Gawain smirked at the question and nodded, leaving the explanation for later. There was a story behind his name - both of his names, really - but they really needed to end the wet t-shirt contest before he jumped into explaining how one of his friends occasionally doubles as an each uisge just to add to Arthurian accuracy.
He returned after the shower and waited a bit before Celeste made an appearance again, wearing her original clothes, and looking a lot less wolfhound-soaked.
>>"Sorry, hopefully you weren't waiting too long."
"Nah, it's fine" the mirrorwalked smiled, opening his arms in a grand gesture taking in the walls around them "Ready for the grand tour led by a totally real authentic knight?"
Celeste could tell he wasn't ready to tell her the origins of his name - maybe there was a story to it, maybe it was personal. Either way, she didn't ask anything else.
She was mainly just waiting for her hair to dry some more before she could pull it up into her normal bun, with her bangs down around her face. It was still too wet to comfortably put into a bun, plus it was going to curl a little bit more since it was drying by air.
>> "Ready for the grand tour led by a totally real authentic knight?"
She giggled, then curtsied in her dress, "Why yes, good sir Knight. I am quite ready." She said with a very fake, elegant, royal voice. Now all they needed was the royal monarchy from the United Kingdom to show up and it'd be a perfect fit. It was a pretty beautiful mansion, she'd have to give it that. Not to mention huge.
Celeste was amused by the whole 'knight' thing. Not exactly in shining armor, but being a member of the X-men was close enough, for now.
>>"Why yes, good sir Knight. I am quite ready."
Gawain grinned, and let the way, getting into his usual Mansion Greeter routine. It had been a whole since the last time he showed a newbie around, and he liked seeing the awe in their faces as they took in all the place had to offer.
"So, as you guessed, this is the girls' wing of the dorm... guys are that way. Offices are down this hallway, but you already know that... Miss Taylor's office is down this way too, she's the guidance counselor. And also an adapted. Let's see... kitchen's this way, that's where the food is, plus the common room, with the TV..." he added, as they walked on, and glanced at Celeste "So... commuter, huh. Didn't like the idea of a posh boarding school?"
Celeste followed Gawain around, content with his explanation of the Mansion.
"So, as you guessed, this is the girls' wing of the dorm... guys are that way. Offices are down this hallway, but you already know that... Miss Taylor's office is down this way too, she's the guidance counselor. And also an adapted. Let's see... kitchen's this way, that's where the food is, plus the common room, with the TV..."
She nodded, made sense. Her mind flashed back to Juliette leading her down the office hallway and she nodded again, "Yeah, Juliette actually is the one who brought me down that hallway when I finally gained the courage to show up." She chuckled at herself. She couldn't believe she had been that nervous to show up to the school to get enrolled - it was a good thing she did, though, because was pretty sure she almost missed the deadline.
>> "So... commuter, huh. Didn't like the idea of a posh boarding school?"
She chuckled and shook her head, "Oh, no. I mean, I'd enjoy it here. The water pressure alone was to die for." She paused, carefully explaining her living situation. "I live with an older lady right now, like really old. She's... Going through a lot, so I'm staying with her until she's stable. She kinda was my saving grave when I first got here." She wasn't sure how long she'd be with Ms. Norma, but for now, they were making it work. There really wasn't a need for Celeste to move, except to be closer to classes.
>>"Yeah, Juliette actually is the one who brought me down that hallway when I finally gained the courage to show up."
So, she was a new student, but already registered. Good. Gawain was not as fond of the paperwork par of accepting new residents as he was of showing the Mansion off to them. And they have not yet gotten to the coolest parts... she had seen the Maze, and the common areas. The building had so much more to offer.
>>"I live with an older lady right now, like really old. She's... Going through a lot, so I'm staying with her until she's stable. She kinda was my saving grave when I first got here."
"Oh. I see." Gawain nodded. It made sense. Having someone to take care of, or someone who was an important person in one's life, it totally made sense she would not want to move into the Mansion yet. They did not get many commuter students, but it was also not unheard of.
"Well, whether or not you life here, you have access to most of the things." he shrugged "Infirmary is down this way, we have a healer on staff, everyone calls him DocProf. Wouldn't go to him with a papercut, but he's very good with all kinds of serious injuries." he chuckled.
"And down this way is the Danger Room. We use it for power training."
She nodded, "Yeah, so we'll see what happens." She shrugged a little. It definitely wasn't that she was opposed to living in the mansion - it really would be easier but she just couldn't bring herself to leave her friend in need.
>> "Well, whether or not you life here, you have access to most of the things. Infirmary is down this way, we have a healer on staff, everyone calls him DocProf. Wouldn't go to him with a papercut, but he's very good with all kinds of serious injuries."
Celeste nodded again. That was good to hear - there really wasn't any penalties from the school for not living on campus. She nodded confirmations as Gawain talked. She had heard about Doc Prof but had never actually met the guy.
>> "And down this way is the Danger Room. We use it for power training."
Oh, the danger room. She had heard about it but didn't really know about it, so she figured she'd ask some questions. "Oh, nice. So, how does it work exactly? Is there like dummies that you beat with your powers or.. um.. something?" She really wasn't sure how to phrase the question in any other way. She wanted to continue to train her powers but was a bit worried if she had to do it around others, mainly worried they could accidentally catch some of the radiation she releases.
It wasn't until a few moments later that she realized she had no idea what Gawain's power was and what a better time than to ask? Inquisitively, she asked, "What type of power do you have?"
Celeste had the same glint in her eyes that most students did when they found out about the DR. The name was an absolute success, as long as one measured success by how many mutant kids try to sneak in there unsupervised to battle hard-light villains. Gawain was not even sure how Celeste's powers would measure up to fighting dummies, but that was a discussion for another time.
>>"Oh, nice. So, how does it work exactly? Is there like dummies that you beat with your powers or.. um.. something?"
"Or something." Gawain chuckled "Hard light constructs with holograms. Feels real, but there is less debris to clean up after." One training session in the old, robotic DR, and construction work took up a whole week. Never again.
>>"What type of power do you have?"
Not exactly an unexpected turn of topic. Gawain smirked.
"I teleport through reflecting surfaces... like mirrors. I can walk into movies... oh, and I'm a gender shifter."
>> "Hard light constructs with holograms. Feels real, but there is less debris to clean up after."
She grinned. Nothing more exciting than holograms. Plus, less debris to pick up afterwards is always good. Less work the better... Or something. She couldn't wait to be in it one day, presuming she ever had the chance. "Sounds pretty exciting, honestly. Would hologram things interact with radiation...?" She wasn't entirely sure if it would pick up on her powers or not.
>> "I teleport through reflecting surfaces... like mirrors. I can walk into movies... oh, and I'm a gender shifter."
Celeste was pretty surprised at his powers. Teleportation through mirrors, walking into movies, gender shifting - hold on, he can walk into movies? Like any movies? What about TV shows? She paused, an eye brow arched, "Wait... You can go into movies?" She asked, her face clearly showing surprise and awe. "Like... What about T.V. shows? Can you go into them? Does it change the movie or are you just one of the characters, forced to follow along?" So many questions, not enough time. Mirrors and gender though, "Wow. Mirrors. Ever worried you'll get stuck in one? Does the gender shifting happen at will?"
>>"Sounds pretty exciting, honestly. Would hologram things interact with radiation...?"
"We could probably program them to." Gawain nodded, musing about the possibilities. The DR could recognize it when someone was using their powers; it was only a matter of getting the settings right to make sure fake opponents reacted the way real ones would. He would have to check on insulating radiation, though. Talk about a complicated power... As far as powers went, of course, his were not exactly classic either. Celeste lit up as he disclosed what he could do, and promptly latched on to the most exciting part.
>>"Wait... You can go into movies?"
"Yup."
>>"Like... What about T.V. shows? Can you go into them? Does it change the movie or are you just one of the characters, forced to follow along?"
"Anything on a screen, really. And yeah, the story changes if I make enough of a fuss. I found out by accident, I thought I was walking into another mirror..."
>>"Wow. Mirrors. Ever worried you'll get stuck in one? Does the gender shifting happen at will?"
"Yes, and no." Gawain chuckled at the flood of questions "I shift at midnight every night. Today I'm a guy, tomorrow I'm a girl. Maya is my girl name."
Celeste nodded. Gotta get the computer stuff programmed. That made sense.
Celeste was so surprised about going into movies & T.V. shows. She could only imagine hopping into different shows that she liked.
>> "Anything on a screen, really. And yeah, the story changes if I make enough of a fuss. I found out by accident, I thought I was walking into another mirror..."
Celeste chuckled, "That had to been a bit of a surprise. One minute you think you're going into a mirror, next you're in a horror movie with chainsaws chasing you or something." That would be an awesome power to have but it was a good thing Celeste didn't have it - she would totally just hop in movies and stay there for forever.
>> "Yes, and no. I shift at midnight every night. Today I'm a guy, tomorrow I'm a girl. Maya is my girl name."
She nodded. It had to be a bit scary to hop into the mirror and maybe never be able to get out. It gave Celeste some goosebumps. She imagined herself beating against the glass, begging to get out but forever trapped. But gender shifting, uncontrollably. That was pretty interesting in its own right. One day a guy, next a girl. "Maya is a really pretty name!"
Celeste realized, albeit lately, that she had bombarded the poor guy with questions so she decided she should probably calm down on throwing so many questions randomly out to him. "Sorry for all the questions."
Walking into movies had been freaky the first couple of times. Now Mirror thought of it mostly as a fancy version of the Danger Room, but he had to admit that saying it out loud still made it sound wicked cool. Especially with the world's endless supply of movies and TV shows to pick from.
>>"That had to been a bit of a surprise. One minute you think you're going into a mirror, next you're in a horror movie with chainsaws chasing you or something."
"Disney." Gawain muttered with a smirk "It was Disney."
He was sure Maxine still had pictures of him with butterfly wings tucked away somewhere. The gender-shifting was easier to explain, but people didn't always know what to say about it.
>>"Maya is a really pretty name!... Sorry for all the questions."
"Nah, it's fine" he smiled, shaking his head "You did help wash my giant wolfhound, so. Ask away. But, talking about questions... I'm curious about your own powers. How did you... dunno, learn to manage them?"
Celeste nearly squeaked when Gawain said he went into a Disney movie. She hadn't even thought about Disney movies. "SO, uh, Disney movie? Which one? Cinderella? Did you help Prince Charming and her get together?" Whew, she needed to calm down. If they ever trained together, she definitely was going to beg to go into some of her favorite movies and shows. Grey's Anatomy, she nearly jumped in excitement at the thought, or Star Wars. Or whatever other movies she liked.
Gender shifting seemed fun, too though, but Celeste just couldn't get over all the possibilities of being inside a darn movie.
>> "You did help wash my giant wolfhound, so. Ask away. But, talking about questions... I'm curious about your own powers. How did you... dunno, learn to manage them?"
She giggled, "True." That was an interesting feat they had accomplished earlier. Her own powers? Most people were terrified about them. Radiation tended to freak people out, even though her powers didn't seem to ever do any lasting harm to anyone. It was a fair question though. "Well, I learned how to release it in flares through my arms or through my entire body. I practiced on plants, flowers and weeds and the like." She smirked, she felt kinda bad for them. "Pretty much they tested it out with a Geiger counter. Would see how much I could charge it, the least amount, however much came out. If it made them sick or not." She started turning red, "I didn't find out about the whole absorbing radiation until later - I realized that when I was around objects that typically emit some type of radiation, like microwaves, the radiation part seemed to drop extensively." She really wished she hadn't lost her Geiger counter, honestly. "So, I ended up sneaking into a nuclear power plant and got near the reactors. Watched the Geiger counter drop as I began to absorb it into me." She shrugged, "It even made me a bit sick for a little bit, but everything turned to normal the next day."
She sighed, "So, to sum up, I pretty much just shot rads at helpless plants with a Geiger counter beside them. Also, some slight trespassing."
Talking about dogs and movies was all nice and fun, but it did not change the fact that Gawain was walking around conversing with a girl who had radiation powers. Not that he was afraid of her; but she was exactly the kind of mutant that bigots liked to bring up as a potential deadly threat to society (well, that, and gay people), and it was kind of fascinating to actually meet someone like her. Gawain wondered how she could get powers like that under control in the first place...
>>"Well, I learned how to release it in flares through my arms or through my entire body. I practiced on plants, flowers and weeds and the like. Pretty much they tested it out with a Geiger counter. Would see how much I could charge it, the least amount, however much came out. If it made them sick or not."
"Wow. You're not making a career in landscaping, are ya." Gawain grinned. Plants were still better than animals or people. And it sounded like a very logical way of testing her powers. However, the story was far from over...
>>"I didn't find out about the whole absorbing radiation until later - I realized that when I was around objects that typically emit some type of radiation, like microwaves, the radiation part seemed to drop extensively. So, I ended up sneaking into a nuclear power plant and got near the reactors. Watched the Geiger counter drop as I began to absorb it into me. It even made me a bit sick for a little bit, but everything turned to normal the next day."
Gawain blinked. And blinked again.
"You... absorbed a nuclear plant?!"
Okay, that was officially freaky. Like, very, very freaky.
>>"So, to sum up, I pretty much just shot rads at helpless plants with a Geiger counter beside them. Also, some slight trespassing."
"Wh... ookay." Gawain shook his head, laughing lightly "Soooo... very, very powerful mutant. Good to know. Welcome to school. And I thought I was showing off with the movies..."
Celeste had probably been a little too forthright in her power admissions to Gawain. He had seemed a little iffy about it when she first brought it up and he seemed to have some type of opinion about it now. She wasn't entirely sure if it was good or if it was bad, but hey, he didn't seem to freak out like most people do. AH, radiation, oh nooo. That was nice, at least.
>>"Wow. You're not making a career in landscaping, are ya."
A quick grin slipped across her lips and she began to giggle, "I mean, I can make some excellent, realistic pieces of 'Apocalyptic Wasteland, Death of the Plants'." Poor plants.
>> "You... absorbed a nuclear plant?!"
Celeste shook her head, "Oh no, no, I mean, I absorbed some of the radiation from it. It probably made them worry about their computers for a second, but it didn't eliminate it or get rid of it or anything." Honestly, she wasn't sure what would happen if she had absorbed all the radiation from the nuclear plant. Meltdown? Probably not... No radiation, right? But maybe no power going out of it? Who knew. Science stuff that Celeste didn't really know anything about. She sighed, "There is some pretty heavy limits, even for me."
>> "Soooo... very, very powerful mutant. Good to know. Welcome to school. And I thought I was showing off with the movies..."
She chuckled quietly, "I'm not that powerful. Plenty of issues with it," she shrugged. "Thanks though! I'm excited to be here. And don't think I'm going to let you off the hook for my other question! What movie did you get trapped into?" She grinned at him.
