The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>> "So if you don't mind me asking, where exactly are you from? I don't recognise your accent at all"
Forsyth laughed at this gently, Linely avoided smirking by the tiniest of margins as well. "I'm from Montserrat, in the Caribbean" the lilt of Irish combined with African accents would have given the trained ear an indication of where he was from, but he clearly was used to having this question asked quite a bit. "Don't worry, barely anyone guesses it before I tell them myself." Montserrat of course was still in great difficulty due to the volcanic activity on the Island, many members of the population had made their way to other nations as a result.
It was Linely's time to speak "we normally have a bit of fun when it comes to getting schoolkids to ask where various officers are originally from, no-one ever gets his right. A few have got close though haven't they Forsyth?" The two men laughed in a fashion only ever associated with people who worked together as comrades for a very long time. >> "Also don't Marksmen deal in rifles? I'm not learning to shoot one of those am I?" Forsyth kept this question in good humor. "I think we'll start you with pistols for now, there's time yet for you to start using the miniguns, be patient." That was Forsyth, bad jokes came along with actually pretty darn good work.
"Yeah, in all seriousness though, pistols are probably best for you at the moment, recoil from some rifles is enough to knock full grown people over, plus handguns are easier to carry. So to the shooting range?" Linely spoke with enthusiasm, not as much as a gun nut, but more in the fashion that he knew this would help Rachael with some self defence. After all, those that lived by the sword got shot by those who didn't.
When Forsyth mentioned where he was from Rachael nodded, that would explain it. She'd never met anyone from the Caribbean before, there were those pirates of the Caribbean movies but the large man certainly didn't look like any of those actors. "We could of sat here for hours and I'd never have guessed it," Rachael mentioned, a little sheepish. "I've never even heard of Montserrat."
Forsyth's joke earned him a small chuckle from the green skinned mutant, the humorous image of her attempting to wield a minigun likely half her size amused her. She blanched at the thought of recoil, while definitely a new experience for her she'd seen plenty of weapon outtakes on the internet of people smacking themselves in the face and being knocked off their feet by weapon kickback. Which suddenly gave her an idea. "What about tasers?" She asked as the trio made their way towards the range. "I mean they're not restricted here in America right? Small, light and easy to use right, just need to learn how not to zap myself."
>> "What about tasers? ....just need to learn how not to zap myself"
Linely did admit, tasers could be very useful, they did have a limited range though and she hadn't considered one thing. "Before you use a taser on someone else, you get zapped yourself as you need to know what it's like. Learning to fire a pistol will help you shoot straight at least." The police did use tasers , particularly as non-lethal alternatives, but when live fire was needed, a gun was normally necessary.
Seeing her face blanch at recoil, Forsyth smiled kindly "don't worry about the recoil, pistols don't have that much, rifles are the ones that normally cause trouble for most people, and let's be honest, you're not going to be using one of those."
They came to the door of the shooting range, Linely opened it to reveal a neatly lit, grey room with heavy bullet proof glass on both sides. Earmuffs were present by the shooting points for beginners, most police had got used to being involved in firefights in NYC, so rarely needed them.
"You'll be fine, shooting straight is a useful skill, regardless of whether you actually end up needing it or not."
Rachael stared at the detective incredulously for a while, unsure of whether the taser comment was a joke or an actual requirement. If it was the latter then it would also explain the large amount of internet video's of people getting tased, she always thought those guys were adrenaline junkies with more free-time than brains. "Your kidding right? I gotta get tased, I don't suppose I need to get shot before I use a gun?" She realised after she'd said it that her joke might have been in bad taste, these two were police officers it wouldn't surprise Rachael if they had been shot before.
As Rachael entered the range she actually started to feel a little nervous, or was that excitement? Sometimes it was hard to tell. She approached the various safety equipment that hung on the wall and grabbed a pair of earmuff, dangling them around her neck for now. While there was a high chance that her abilities could heal any potential inner ear damage from weapon discharge in close proximity Rachael would rather not risk it. "Lets hope I don't end up needing it."
>> "I don't suppose I need to get shot before I use a gun?"
"It's different, Tasers aren't controlled, and hearts can give out, generally you know when you fire a taser you are going to be hurting someone. Firing a gun can be very random, missing can be harmless...or it can be lethal." He'd been shot several times before, and each time had hurt. It felt like a coldness, then you couldn't quite feel that area, then if you were lucky you didn't pass out.
Entering the range, Linely allowed Rachel and Forsyth to go on ahead. Forsyth went to the locked safe where the guns were kept. He put the code in, and opened it, revealing a well kept array of training guns. Several Pistols were available, and Forsyth took two of them out.
>>Let's hope I'll not be needing these
He handed one, unloaded, to Rachael. "I recommend you put the earmuffs on at all times if you can't handle the noise this time." Forsyth spoke. He demonstrated how to load the pistol extremely thoroughly. "Now I turn the safety off..." It was a slight click. The difference between life and death quite often. "And slowly squeeze the trigger." Forsyth's pupils turned cat like, almost like a Panther. BANG! BANG! BANG!
Three perfect shots in the center of the target. Forsyth was just that good, and didn't Linely know it. "Now it's your turn Rachael", Linely said, waiting to see if Rachel put on the earmuffs or not. Police officers were used to it, citizens not so much.
Rachael let out a quiet sigh, guess he took her comment seriously after all. Rachael could understand the risks that came with using a taser, she recognised that it was an electric current that could have the potential to shut down a persons circulatory system. What did he mean tasers weren't controlled, you shoot someone with it, it lets out a shock and the person collapses. It seemed rather straight forward to Rachael. It was guns she saw as more uncontrollable. After all even if you try and shoot away from the head or centre-mass the chance to hit a major artery or something similar was quite high, that was the truly uncontrollable factor.
Once she got handed the gun Rachael spent a brief amount of time appraising it, the weapon was actually lighter than she had expected it to be. She had barely enough time to raise her attention and slide the earmuffs on before Forsyth opened fire, three shots in quick succession. Once the other Officer had moved and the detective urged her forward Rachael peered down the range, an impressed whistle at the sight of before her. Three bull-eyes at a fair range.
Sliding the magazine into the weapon had been understandably simple and Rachael had seen enough action movies to remember the safety, slowly she raised the weapon in front of her. With one eye closed Rachael tilted her head slightly to look down the sights of the pistol to the target. Were her hands really swaying that much? One second she'd be looking down at the top of the target, the next it would be the bottom. Every time she tried to correct herself she just ended up making it worse. She'd just have to deal with it Rachael realised.
Taking a deep breath Rachael slowly pulled back on the trigger, the resistance it produced surprised the girl. She somewhat expected that a slight tap on the trigger would be all that was needed but that was most certainly not the case. BANG! The target visibly reacted as Rachael's shot stuck home, she'd actually managed to hit it... just. Gently she put the gun back down on the counter, her hands still somewhat shaking. "That was harder than I thought... at least I hit it though." There were likely still a few shots left in the gun for her to use but Rachael decided she needed to calm down before she tried again. Her hands were much more jittery than before.
The girl was shaking, poor thing, everyone was always pretty nervous when they were shooting for the first time. That knowledge that you could kill someone with one false move was disconcerting, almost empowering at times. Linely couldn't help but stifle a chuckle when she quickly put the earmuffs on as Forsyth made his shots.
She shook the gun up and down, and Linely was worried that she was going to drop it. She tried to correct herself, and just made it worse. You didn't do that with handguns, there was only a certain amount aiming could do. Her pulling the trigger was like torture for the two police officers , there was a moment of silence , Linely held his breath. BANG!
A release of the tension, the target had been hit, not a bad shot either, better than some managed to do on their first try. >> "That was harder than I thought...at least I hit it though"
"You did well for your first time, many don't even hit it the first time...but you really shouldn't put a loaded gun down with the safety off" Forsyth moved quickly enough to make sure the gun was safe before Linely spoke again.
"Eventually you'll get used to it, you don't need to look so nervous" her shaking was rather endearing, Linely had to admit. He had been like that when he'd first fired a gun, though it was a shotgun, far more recoil there.
"When you've calmed down a little, you can fire again" He smiled kindly, "Forsyth can help you with the aim...in more ways than one." In this situation (and most things related to guns) Forsyth's mutation was rather useful.
Rachael grumbled slightly as Forsyth rushed past to ensure the gun was safely lowered, how could she have been so careless, Forsyth had explicitly told her ensure the safety was on before lowering the weapon. "Ah, sorry." She told Forsyth with a nervous smile, why was she still shaking? "Yeah, I hope I can get better that was... nerve wracking." While there was some truth to the statement Rachael wasn't actually sure if she truly wanted to be comfortable around guns, there was a reason she disliked them and the last thing she wanted to do was form a dependency on one for protection.
After a few moments of pacing around the room Rachael walked back up to the bench, slowly she wrapped both hands around the gun and lifted it up and out in front of her. This time she focused heavily on her breathing, working to make it as slow and deep as possible. Again she looked down the sight of the gun, "Like this?" She asked Forsyth.
"Is the safety on?" He asked in response, to which she nodded. Slowly he approached, "Widen your stance, your legs are too close. Bend your knee's slightly, you don't have to be ram-rod stiff. You've dipped the muzzle slightly, the shot is going to be lower than you think if you were to fire now." He continued to offer little snippets of advice, Rachael taking it all on board and altering her position somewhat each time. "A parting gift," He mentioned as a hand gently squeezed Rachael's shoulder before he stepped back, joining Linely in watching.
The moment Forsyth touched Rachael's shoulder everything sharpened. It was almost a little disorienting how quickly everything in the distance shifted from non-descript figures to complete highly detailed targets. Ensuring that she still had her breathing under control Rachael thumbed the safety and once again slowly eased on the trigger. BANG! The target was hit and this time it wasn't at the outer edge. She could do this! Rachael pulled on the trigger again, more forceful this time. BANG! This time the target didn't react. She missed? "Oh..." She managed, not sure why the fact she missed irritated her so.
With the gun out of ammo Rachael felt safe in placing it down on the counter. "I think I got a little over-confident with that last shot." Rachael stated with a small laugh. "You said you weren't the best with a gun, how good or bad are you exactly though?" She asked the detective.
>> "I hope I can get better that was... nerve wracking"
"My first time was the same. Never have been overly comfortable with guns even in my profession. As Forsyth knows, I'm more of a hand to hand guy-and I will be teaching you that as well." She would certainly improve in all situations, guns were one thing. At range it was sometimes necessary to have a little something prepared. However most often, a girl like Rachael would likely find herself unarmed.
She went to take her next shot. Forsyth was giving her little tips, all important, this wasn't like the movies where the actors would be told to hold the gun and look cool, she was being taught properly. All good.
Then Forsyth's eyes turned to Irises, this would be good. Linely could almost make out Rachel's eyes transforming in a similar way, although he didn't quite have line of sight. Forsyth had worked his little mutant magic though. The first shot was an impressive one, but the second was fired too quickly? >> "I think I got a little over-confident with that last shot" That was always a danger, if you acted without discipline towards guns they could be very dangerous. They were tools like any other, but you had to respect them. Still, she was young, and she would learn. Linely nodded in agreement "You'll get a handle on that eventually". >> "You said you weren't the best with a gun, how good or bad are you exactly though?"
"Hand me a pistol Forsyth" Linely felt it was best to show rather than tell in this particular case. He made sure the saftey was on until he got in front of the target. This would likely be pretty embarrassing.
Three shots. Quick succession. BANG. BANG. BANG. Two hit the outer rim of the target, one was closer to the centre. "So, I'm not an awful shot given my time in the police force, but I'm nowhere near as good at it as most of the others in the precinct."
It made Rachael feel slightly better to hear that it was common for one to be nervous the first few times they held a gun, though it was hard to imagine Forsyth or even the detective being as shaken as she was. "Shooting a target is one thing though," she stated solemnly. "Actually being able to pull the trigger if there is another person on the other side... I don't know if I could make that choice."
Rachael watched as the detective stepped up to the range and after getting into position fired three quick rounds, each managing to hit the target. Though not as impressive as Forsyth's effort Rachael still couldn't believe how easy he made it look, each shot of Rachael's took almost ten seconds just to line up, the one time she tried firing quickly she'd missed the target altogether. Plus Forsyth had the help of his mutation, a form of cheating in a way.
"You are far from 'not awful'," She reassured the detective. "I was impressed." Slowly she slid the earmuffs from her head and laid them to rest around her neck. "You know I'm starting to feel a little guilty. Teaching me to shoot, to defend myself. If there is anything you need from me don't hesitate to ask, okay? So, need me to do more paperwork or do you have something else for me?
"Trust me" Linely paused for longer than usual "You tend to find out pretty quickly whether you are willing to make that choice. You don't think, you just fight, or you run away." Linely was awfully serious for a moment. Hopefully it wouldn't come to that, but in this city it was becoming sadly quite common, especially for young teenagers to have to learn things like that pretty quickly.
>> "You are far from "not awful"..."I was impressed"
The detective smiled at her kind words "Compared to other people in the precinct, this isn't bad, I've got experience with guns, but as you can imagine, being a Brit it did take some adjusting to." Forsyth gave a knowing glance, goodness, how he must have cringed at Linely's first efforts at pistol shooting.
He smiled again at the girl's admission of mild guilt." Well for one thing, it means there is one person capable of defending themselves conventionally so an overstretched police force don't have to use as much resources" He paused. "On another note, you were in need of my help, so I took you in, as God has commanded." Forsyth's lack of reaction would hopefully tell Rachael that he knew the situation. He spoke up after Linely had finished "I know what it's like to not have a home to go back to, so rest assured, your secret is safe with me."
"And so long as you come back every morning, I'm told by Helen that you were an absolute Godsend, so while it's not glamorous, your help with the paperwork is very much appreciated" Linely tried to lighten the mood. It was too late in the afternoon to be having such sombre conversations.
Rachael's eyes widened in shock as the detective reassured her, he'd keep her secret? Did he figure out her immigration, or lack thereof, status? No, not likely. If anything Linely probably meant he'd keep her homelessness a secret. Rachael let out a sigh of relief and let her head lull back. "Thank you," she responded with a small smile.
Rachael wasn't sure if the detective really understood what his seemingly off hand comment about her work with Helen had meant to the teenager. She'd long since given up on a normal close to her teenage years since her mutation manifested, it was unlikely she'd be accepted into any sort of schooling and no-one wanted to hang out with the homeless girl. The detective's offering gave her chance at normalcy, a job with which she could use to eventually find her own way.
"Of course, I'll be here anytime you need me. Not like I have anything better to do," She responded.
The teenager looked a little worried about Forsyth knowing a bit more about her, Linely hadn't told him about the whole Australia thing (though Linely knew that he might suspect something). The shy smile and thank you told Linely all he needed to know, she wasn't too spooked by the situation. At some point her immigration status was going to be a problem, and didn't he know it.
>> "Of course, I'll be here anytime you need me. Not like I have anything better to do"
Linely smiled at this, it was good to have a degree of loyalty. Even if it was because he'd done a lot for her. "I promise to do what I can to help as well, for one thing, getting you enrolled in a school. Ideally somewhere where they understand mutants. For now though, I promised you some hand to hand training, so we can head to the training area. We have about an hour left before we have to get going."
"And I'll have to head off now" Forsyth spoke as his pager rang. "But good luck with your training Matthews." He quickly headed off down the corridor, heading towards the office.
To hear that the Detective was going to look into some local schools for her filled Rachael with barely contained excitement. It really put the entire ordeal she'd been through into perspective. Prior to her development of her mutation Rachael viewed school in the same light as many her age, eight hours of her day that could have been spent on more fun activities. Now though, school sounded exciting. A chance for her to feel somewhat normal again, even if she didn't look it. "I'd given up on going back to school," Rachael told the Detective. "But if you can find somewhere nearby I'd love to go back."
Rachael admittedly felt more confident going into the hand to hand training than she had entering the firing range, her very vague recollection of being taught the correct punching technique coming to mind. Unfortunately though Rachael lacked much in the way of physical strength so while the Detective may rely on his physical strength and mutation to overcome an altercation Rachael couldn't. Did the detective know many ways for a significantly weaker individual to viably match a stronger opponent? "Oh, you're leaving? Thank you for the help earlier." She replied to Forsyth.
"So what sort of hand to hand fighting do you know? I mean, at my size brute force is out of the question."
>> "But if you can find somewhere nearby I'd love to go back"
Xavier's was the obvious choice, they specialised in helping mutants like Rachel live their lives, they were also the source of the X-Men , who were definitely good people. "I have a few ideas, one in particular could help with your specific circumstances. But I'll need make contact." Honestly from a 15 year old girl, this was the most enthusiasm for school that Linely had ever seen.
Forsyth left , giving Rachel a nod and a "You're welcome" to her thankyou, he had to rush off pretty quick by the looks of things. Linely smiled and gave a polite wave as he went. Now more significant training could begin.
>> "What sort of hand to hand fighting do you know..."
"Primarily fencing thrusts and techniques, but I'm well trained in the baton and basic street fighting nowadays, I've had to learn given my profession. But rolling out of the way, quick advances, how to avoid getting grappled are my primary specialisms. Brute force has never really been my style either" Hopefully this would reassure her, simple techniques could save her life one day. "Obviously you don't have the benefits of my mutation, but most people don't need to make their opponent collapse. You just need to get away from danger for the most part."
