The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Athena strode purposefully up to the Mansion. She'd come back to New York after a phone call from one of her coworkers letting her know that a guy matching Sam's description had been found dead. Her parents had understood her need to return early. They had been busy with research anyway so they were quite happy to let Athena go back to New York. She hadn't even been off the plane an hour yet, having taken a taxi from the airport. With a suitcase in one hand and a glare the owl shifter made her way inside. She didn't bother with any of the kids and other people around save to conduct a quick survey to find Sam's room. If that jerk wasn't dead he'd wish he was.
After five minutes and some scared students Athena was shown to Sam's room. She didn't bother to knock. Just barged in and tossed her suitcase down by the door. She made doubly sure the hallway door was shut and locked before slowing down and actually paying attention to her surroundings. Sam's room was different from what she'd expected. For one, she hadn't really pegged him as a pet owner but there was a dog and cat lurking in the room. The dog had claimed the bed while the cat was perched near the window to catch a few early morning sunbeams.
"Dog. Cat."
She nodded to the animals and sat down on the bed beside the dog. If Sam was dead then someone had to be taking care of these furballs. Athena raked a hand through her hair and sighed. Coming up here, she'd been all prepared to be pissed off, maybe even break a few things. Heck she still was pissed to a certain extent. But it didn't seem right for a dead guy's room to still feel lived in. Like the jerk could waltz right in as if he hadn't been shot and killed.

Sam pressed his head on the wall of his shower as the hot water ran over head it had been a few days since he had been ‘declared’ dead officially. It was weird having to plan a funeral for the record books. He had people he had to invite bills to pay all of which would lead a paper trail to the mansion that could and would confirm his death. All for the sake of keeping his survival a secret whoever wanted him dead would have sent Leo and whoever the other guy was or someone else to collect him and make sure the job was finished. He didn’t like pretending to be dead and stick only to his room, his man-cave or more importantly due to recent events the War Room which had been filled with files of similar attacks as to the one that was placed on Sam.
He had been working like a madman for the past few days obsessing about every detail he hadn’t come up with any names though other than the ones that were mentioned in recent and similar attacks. Sam’s eye opened under the water and he yawned. He needed sleep or coffee. Both of which were an option seeing as he didn’t have much else to do. All of his classes except for one or two were still cancelled and those students were sworn to secrecy. Other than that Sam only left his room when it was dark or the mansion was pretty empty, which never happened however with his sixth sense it made it very easy to move around without being seen. An occasional Sam ghost sighting but that was about it.
Turning off the shower and grabbing his towel he started singing the words to ‘One of these nights’ by The Eagles ”The full moon is calling, the fever is high, and the wicked wind whispers and moans you-“ Sam stopped and almost jumped back when he saw his girlfriend or rather girl he wanted to be his girlfriend sitting on his bed with Bruno right next to her. Sam didn’t jump back but he realized he had forgot to call her and let her know he wasn’t in fact dead during the chaos that was planning his own fake funeral.
”Shit….” Sam said as he slapped the back of his head and his towel dropped in response. He was now standing there nude in his room while Athena looked like she had been crying. Sam slowly bent down and grabbed his towel and backed away slowly into the bathroom while keeping his eye fixed on Athena’s increasingly angry facial features.
Athena's head snapped up when she heard the voice singing in the bathroom. She knew that voice. It belonged to a dead man. And he knew it too judging by his expression as he exited the bathroom. Athena paid the barest attention to the fact that he was naked for a moment. All she did was note that she'd made a very good choice when deciding to see him again after their first encounter. Her left eye twitched erratically as she stood from the bed.
"I might have to date corpses more often. You're remarkable well preserved for someone I was informed was dead."
She stood from her spot on the bed and stalked toward the retreating form of her boyfriend, not that she'd informed him of that. Though that arrangement might have to change soon.
"So were you planning on informing me that I didn't have to attend a funeral soon? Or was I going to play the bereaved girlfriend in whatever sick joke you're playing."
As soon as she'd closed enough space between them, Athena swung at Sam. He was NOT going to get away with not telling her that he wasn't in fact dead. That just wasn't something HER boyfriend was going to get away with!

The bathroom door wouldn’t have been enough to block Athena’s wrath he still wasn’t entirely sure what her mutation was but he was sure that she didn’t need one to hulk up in her current mood. The towel now in his hands went back to his waist while he wrapped it quickly before she swung on him. Sam ducked the first time and threw his hands up defensively before he could attempt to explain. ”girlfriend?” Sam asked trying not to smirk. Totally bad timing on his part but he liked that idea even if it didn’t seem it was going to last at the moment.
”Thena, keep it down please!” Sam said his voice calm and soothing in an attempt to calm her as well, even though he knew she was going to yell if she wanted to she was stubborn like that and that was why he liked her. ”Not a sick joke! Sam tried to explain as he continued to back up till his back was up against the wall of his bathroom. The shower was to his left and the toilet to his right. He didn’t have an escape but could have used the water if he had wanted to.
He wasn’t going to of course he faced thousands of trained killers before Athena? Athena scared him more than any of those guys put together could. Even more than Private dancer? A chill went up his spine and he tried to explain. ”I was gonna tell you, I knew you were visiting your parents for a while and I was gonna clear everything up before then.”
Sam took a breath expecting her to swing again this time not trying to dodge the strike, ”Look you let me put some pants on and I can try to explain some things… please?” he asked attempting to give her one sad lone eye.
Dead man walking was facing his executioner and he was caught up in the fact that she'd called herself his girlfriend? If she didn't want to plant a fist in his face she'd have facepalmed.
"Yes, girlfriend, now pay attention dear."
A stray thought passed Athena's mind as she backed Sam up against the wall of his bathroom. Any other day and she'd probably be jumping him for other reasons. Mostly naked and fresh out of a shower? Athena could appreciate that. For now she was mildly amused that he seemed genuinely terrified of her. Maybe it was the needles. Not that she had any with her but he knew she could handle them well. For his sake she tried to keep her voice down. Tried being the key word.
"Oh yes, so noble. I heard about your death from a coworker. A coworker! If he hadn't seen fit to call me would you have said anything at all?!"
Athena acknowledged that he wanted to put on some pants and then explain this mess to her. She acknowledged it and then swung her fist at that one sad lone eye of his. It wasn't precisely aimed but she did manage to strike with what little force she had. With a sour look on her face that promised pain if she didn't like what she heard, Athena turned and walked back into Sam's bedroom. Then she sat back down next to the dog.
"I don't see why you need pants to explain but fine. Pants, then explanations."

”Pants so I don’t need to hold the towel constantly.” Sam said as he followed her back into his room. After she swung on him. He was tempted to correct her on her swinging into the side of his head but instead a small clump of ice formed where she had hit in order to bruise swelling.
She sat on the bed next to Bruno whose head shifted onto her lap as if her being there was to pet him. Sam turned away from her and walked over to his door and made sure it was locked like it was supposed to be. Maybe with the lack of sleep he forgot to lock it in the first place. The last thing he needed was a kid to walk in and pet his pets to realize that dead Sam wasn’t dead. He had tried hard to conceal his death so far.
Walking across the room Sam pulled some pajama pants out of the drawer and slid them on before setting the wet towel down in the hamper. ”Look, I didn’t want you to worry which was why I didn’t call you in the first place and with the shit going on here I didn’t think I needed to call you right away.” Sam pulled a small chair he had on a wall over to Athena on the bed.
Sitting across from Athena and then petting Bruno on the head he continued, ”I’m presumed dead because that was what we planned, out of the good for all of the kids here. I was a target Thena; someone tried to kill me and sorta succeeded.” He waved his hand for the sort-succeeded bit. According to the healer he was dead but he still managed to save him. ”Someone I’ve never met before, someone who had been following me for sometime and only attacked when they were sure they could have killed me.” Sam said leaning back into his chair running his hand across the neck where a few days ago a large whole was.
”They only stopped following me because they assume I am dead. So does the media and the police. Which was what we planned. The last thing these kids need is someone coming here and destroying their home to get to me. Faking my death wasn’t the best plan I’ll give you that but it was the safest. It’s buying us time till we can figure out who attacked me.” Sam figured he was screwing up the explanation as he continued.
”I can’t begin to tell you how sorry I was for not telling you. I knew you were visiting your parents and would have freaked out if I told you I was attacked. So I decided to inform you once this little mess was over.” again he waited to be hit but he continued, ”Majority of the kids don’t know if I’m actually dead or not and frankly now that is the way I want to keep it.” Sam pushed the chair an inch or two back just out of immediate striking range, ”I’m sorry I didn’t tell you I was attacked and am currently faking my own death to keep you and the kids that call this mansion home safe.”
Athena very nearly snorted at the dog. It presumed a lot. Luckily she didn't feel like correcting the pooch at the moment. Instead she sat and listened to Sam explain why he hadn't told her about his little fake death trick. In lieu of the screech she would have produce as an owl Athena merely grumbled. As his little explanation wrapped up she muttered a number of foul words under her breath, the jist of which seemed to be "F$&%(&^ hero tendencies".
With a clearly exasperated look on her face Athena nodded.
"Alright, I get it tough guy. You were pulling the damn stupid heroic sacrifice stuff to keep everyone safe."
She still wanted to punch something. Since Sam was out because he was acting on his moronic heroic streak, something she envied if she was going to be honest, Athena decided that she'd really like to punch the shooter if she got a chance. Or maybe inject them with a few fun drugs and watch them die painfully. A sadistic grin appeared momentarily at the thought.
"I'm still not happy. Next time you pull this...kind of thing you let me know you aren't dead. Got it?" she paused and stared at him to make sure he knew that she wouldn't let it go next time he pulled such a stunt, "Oh, and you'd better make the guy responsible suffer. 'Cus if you don't I will."
Athena wasn't a hero by a long shot but that didn't mean she wouldn't find some way to wreak a very painful and bloody vengeance on the guy in question if Sam didn't.

The second she cursed the second Sam relaxed, just a little. ”It was two guys.” Sam said smirking slightly as he pushed himself up from the chair and walked the chair back over to where it was before hand. ”You think one guy could jump me and mess me up enough for me to fake my death?” Sam asked as he started to laugh. ”No, two or more and they were lucky I had a few before hand.” Sam said nodding his head assuring as he opened up the closet door for Cammie and Bruno’s meals. Athena came over right around feeding time and if they didn’t get their food they were moody the rest of the day.
The second he opened the closet door the cat jumped from the windowsill and padded over to where Sam was now standing with the cat food near the cat’s bowl. Sam smirked and petted Cammie on the head as she started to chow down in her recently filled bowl. Bruno did the same when a large bowl was filled. Sam looked back to Athena and nodded once again. ”I’ll be sure to let my ‘girlfirend’” Sam made sure to put the emphasis on ‘girlfriend’ when he said it ”know next time I plan on faking my own death. First person.” Sam said as he walked over to the bed kissed Athena on the head then fell onto his shirtless stomach.
”I’ll take care of them as soon as I find them.” Sam said as he smirked tilting his head back over to the other side of the bed where Athena sat. ”Promise.” Sam said meaning it. Leo for one wouldn’t have a voice box. The guy kept yelling till Sam couldn’t hear then proceeded to taunt him. He was going to pay.
”Other than the early departure due to my funeral you had a good time visiting your parents?” Sam asked trying to change the subject as carefully as he could.
Athena sighed and then smirked. Sam was back to normal, apparently he no longer feared her wrath. Now he was boasting about how many it took to take him down while he fed his furballs. After the cat and dog were successfully distracted Sam revisited the whole girlfriend slip. So she hadn't meant to say it at the time. Oh well, she'd been meaning to say something about it sooner or later.
"Good. I hate to have to hurt you for not telling me."
Instead of saying anything she laid down beside Sam and nodded. Athena had assumed he'd probably seek vengeance on his own but...well she hadn't been sure. Some of these hero types didn't do vengeance. Sam it seemed was a little more realistic. The question about her visit to her parents was an obvious attempt to change the subject but Athena accepted it gracefully enough.
"Yeah. It'd been a while so it was good to see them. They were just as caught up in their work as ever. Didn't so much as bat an eyelash when I said I had to go 'cus my boyfriend had gone and gotten himself dead. I did get to see one of my old friends though. Married with kids already."
Athena chuckled.
"But you don't care about that so...what does a dead guy do all day? Must get lonely playing the ghost."
Maybe she'd visit him via owl form one day soon. It'd kill two birds with one stone...dear lord. Athena winced at the bird related thought. If she kept that up she'd be spouting off egg puns.

”That’s not good, don’t even bat an eyelash when your boyfriend is dead.” Sam said shaking his head while his girlfriend laid down next to him. ”I mean they are either really into their or this is a regular thing for you…” Sam smirked and raised his hand, ”You know what don’t need to tell me.” he let out a small laugh and turned his head slightly so he was looking directly at her.
”I care that you care.” Sam said shrugging his shoulders. True he had no time invested in her friends but he knew that it didn’t matter. She cared that was all that mattered to him.
>>>>"But you don't care about that so...what does a dead guy do all day? Must get lonely playing the ghost."
”Lonely? Yeah kinda.” Sam said he had been talking to Shade a bit and had other things to keep himself busy but other than Doc, Shin, Streak Mirror and a few others he was presumed dead meaning no one could know he was alive. Which meant for an interesting story whenever someone thought they spotted him.
”Kinda, I got the man-cave to keep me distracted but that only kills so much time.” Sam said shrugging his shoulders. ”I mean it has a few toys but it’s been a few days since I was killed.” Sam said trying not to smirk at the last part of his comment. ”Classes were pretty much not happening anyways.” Sam said shrugging his shoulders again.
”Cammie and Bruno have been the only constant company I have been having. I mean I can leave the room, just no one can see me otherwise it will cause some chaos.” Sam smirked, ”Something you are familiar with I’m sure.”
"Just dedicated to their work. Dead boyfriends don't happen much."
They probably figured she'd move on quickly. She'd lost count of the number of guys she'd been on dates with since coming to New York so her parents probably didn't figure she'd know Sam that long. Athena smirked since she'd told him anyway, though it turned softer at his comment. Only for a moment though.
"How sweet."
After that comment she just listened to him talk. It was good to hear his voice. Made her feel better about the whole mess that brought her back to the States early. So she smirked at his last comment and turned to face him.
"Who me? Familiar with chaos? Naaaah, I'm just an EMT. You're the chaos magnet here buster."
Athena laughed a little. She wasn't going to say that she was glad to see he was alive. It didn't need to be said. Nope, Athena was content to lay here with him.
"So you're probably still having a funeral, yeah? Guess I'll have to fish out my little black dress."

”Fair enough” Sam said trying not to recount the last few days and determine they were more chaotic than most things he could picture Athena doing. Needle into the back of the neck aside he was pretty sure as chaos goes he had her beat. ”I guess one of us has to keep the other out of trouble.” Sam said smirking and turning his hand over towards hers.
”No, I’m hoping no one has to go to it. Honestly I planned for a a day or two before you were supposed to return if I had any idea you were keeping tabs on me I would have made more of an effort not to be killed.” Sam said teasingly. He stopped smiling for a second, ”I’m gonna notify everyone who was invited when I figure everything out though and get to the bottom of this.” Sam said trying to reassure himself more than her. He had the names and was the one making the calls and planning everything. Granted it didn’t sound like him but it was still him.
”You were gonna wear a little black dress to my funeral?” Sam asked smirking as he rolled over, ”Little black dress?” he let out a laugh and leaned in and kissed her, ”I just died and you were going to wear a ‘little’ black dress.” Sam laughed a little more and put the emphasis on little. ”Should wear a long black dress to my funeral.”
"And lord knows you won't be the one keeping me out of trouble." Athena chuckled, "That's fine. At least I don't have to pretend to be distraught. As is I'd probably sit there and try not to laugh."
A funeral for Sam with the guest of honor still kicking? Yeah, she'd laugh. It would totally ruin the whole thing. Better not to have it. She was blatantly ignoring the notion that the guys who could force Sam into this position in the first place could easily come back to finish the job. If they did she'd just have to hurt them. That's all.
After the kiss, which Thena happily returned, she smirked.
"Yes, a little black dress. If you were stupid enough to die on me I would have had to make you regret it somehow. Besides, I'd be single again. No reason to be too conservative."
Athena laughed.
"Of course if you'd been dumb enough to die I would have gone to your funeral just to punch your corpse."
He was hers for now and that meant he didn't get to die without her say so.

”Pffftttt” Sam said when she said she didn’t have to be conservative when she attended his funeral. ”I’m pretty sure if I died that would give me grounds to haunt you.” Sam said laughing, ”Not the punching thing, I’m pretty sure a lot of people would show up to beat on my corpse.” Sam said his eyebrow lowered in a sneering smirk towards her.
”Yeah no that I think about it I’d definitely not want to attend my funeral.” Sam said laughing a bit more. ”A lot of people I wouldn’t want to see crying about how great I was. Sure it’d be a huge ego trip but.” Sam shrugged. ”Be repetitive, I feel like my ego could only build so much, heck might even bring me back from the dead.” Sam said giving a playful smile, ”Not the first time I died though.” Sam said laughing. Kissing Athena again Sam sat up slightly, ”So you still got all that vacation time?” Sam asked curiously. Hoping she still had it.
"And if you managed to summon up the guts to haunt me I'd make your death an unliving hell. Really it would be better for you to just move on in that case."
Of course she had to shake her head and chuckle at his comment on punching his corpse.
"I'd guess you have plenty of enemies, pulling that hero stuff that you do. Wouldn't surprise me if they burned you in effigy and lined up to mutilate your corpse upon your death."
All she could do was raise an incredulous eyebrow as he nattered on about how everyone would be crying about how great he was at his funeral. Somehow Athena rather doubted that would be how it would go. Crying maybe, usually was at a funeral, but about how great he was? Yeah right.
"So do you make a habit of dying regularly? Or is it a once in a blue moon thing? I'd like to know so I can pick out what to wear to the funerals ahead of time."
Wouldn't that be a heck of a thing? Every six months or so having to play the grieving girlfriend. If they lasted that long. Athena tried not to think about the long term very often. She enjoyed the kiss and then answered his question.
"Yeah I've still got the vacation time. Still got a few more days before I have to be back."
