The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It was strange working with SUPER. Very strange. On the one hand, they had kidnapped him in another world and held him locked up for over a day. On the other hand, he had unlocked his mutation once more during that lockup period. He owed it to them. For forcing him to focus on what he had been unable to do for several years on his own. On the other hand, not all mutants could say SUPER had helped them. Some would say SUPER had kidnapped them and locked them up for experimentation. Wasn’t that what some press release had said? He couldn’t recall. On the other hand, hadn’t they also said they would not do that any more, and— That was way too many hands.
He wasn’t sure of the logic behind them working alongside the government agency. He just did as he was told. But apparently, they were working alongside another group and something something something? Whatever. He knew people who had been affected by this person. And in the end, that was all that mattered. He could sort through his love hate relationship with SUPER another day.
The call came in. Non-lethal takedown. They were up. The Asian let the construct he had been focusing on coalesce on his body in a sudden snap of color and light. Shard armor. Simple diamond-hard plate made of layer upon layer of small triangular barrier, arranged in such a way the razor sharp edges would not kill him.
He had not opted for his traditional gold and chrome lion-faced armor that was his signature look. The one with the giant sword. Too notable. Too dangerous. No. He had opted for something akin to a Power Ranger costume (or Super Sentai, if you will). It had pants, a belt, a top, and a helmet. What ranger did he favor, you ask? Well. There was not a specific design overall. He did not have a pterodactyl or a tyrannosaurus or a mastodon on his chest. Not even a dragon. Though his armor WAS green. Mainly, he had focused on a triangle theme. Triangle on chest, within triangle, with triangular shoulder pads and a triangular visor. It was more one of the later motifs than anything. With white diamonds on his chest.
It coalesced. He looked around the rooftop. Saw Saphirus jump off. Just jump off the roof to almost fly down through a skylight majestically. And— he decided power rangers were lame. So he shifted the entire costume’s design from what he had originally planned, to something else. On the fly. If anyone wanted to know what the new look was, they could google Kamen Rider Ichigo. It was still green, but now it had silvery boots and black leather pants, along with a black biker jacket type top with sleeves and green body armor. Silvery big helmet, big red and silver belt, and a long flowing red scarf. Of ass kicking. That was why he’d changed the whole look on the fly. The scarf would be SO much cooler, as he flew down through the broken skylight after Saphirus. And, it did.
He took a running jump, and kicked out with one leg. Sailed through the air, through the skylight. Scarf flowing behind him. Shin landed about 100 feet from Saphirus, in the classic super hero pose. One knee on the ground, one arm bracing himself. He stood up quickly, and struck a few poses. Just to get in the mood. That was why. No other reason. Certainly not because it was fun to play Superhero.
”Lets do this!” Shin shouted. After a moment, he started to repeat Saphirus’s line. Then he saw one. A giant gray shape in the darkness. With a massive horn.
”Um Saphirus. I think this rhino is for you.”
Shin leaped over the rhino’s charge. He slapped it on the back as he flew over the shifter mutant. Ole!

>> "Huh, I never knew it was based off anything, I just sorta thought that's was your eh... aesthetic, I guess. Anyway, seems pretty useful. Stuff's as strong as diamond, ain't it?" Saphirus said.
Shin oddly felt touched. Saphirus really thought he was that creative? To make up crazy golden armor with a lions face straight from thin air? No. He had just sculpted the armor out of countless minuscule triangular barriers that could have cut him at any moment... and made sure that they did not.
”Thank you for the compliment. I’m not THAT creative. But yes, it can be diamond-hard. Though that doesn’t always stop all the kinetic energy if I get hit.”
He had been sent flying, and had bruises to prove the comment. Not currently, but often enough. When you pick fights with giant monsters and angry mutants, you get what you ask for.
He k ew Saphirus knew a thing or two about kinetic energy. It was kind of a legend, almost an aura around the man. Saphirus was the guy who could take the big hits, and throw them right back. Crowbar-in-hand.
Saphirus confessed old TV shows hadn’t ever really been available to him, when he’d been growing up like a weed. Unwanted, forced to grow wherever he could. But Resilient. Had he said those words exactly? No. But Shin liked metaphor and simile. As blank as a blank. He was the blank. That kind of thing.
He hadn’t known anything about the other man’s life. The Asian in the big golden armor shrugged.
”My parents we’re pretty cool, I guess? Let me watch too much stuff. Get away with too much. Got away with even more when I came to the US.” He said. Didn’t elaborate. Maybe, If pressed. They were both complicated subjects. And there were already enough of those in the world. Like his power loss.
He briefly shared that. Got a decent reply back.
Saphirus shared. He was a dad. And— wanted to know if Shin actually wanted details, or just the basic I’m fine I’m fine talking point line. Shin was silent for a second. It was a second long enough for Saphirus to try and change the subject.
Shin looked around. ”I dunno man. I’m not so up to date on heroes. Especially American heroes. I think...” A gold gauntleted hand poked towards one person In the distance. ”I think that ones supposed to be you.”
Costume fit well enough, in the right way jump suits do. Foam crowbar was a nice touch. Guy had a girlfriend on his arm. Shin had no idea what to make of so much green, and a rubber shoulder snake. Fans knew everything though. Must have been something.
He cleared his throat and chanted the subject yet again. ”Look, man. I had no major powers for over a year. Had to fight crime with the one thing I had left. My wedding ring. So I know about tough times. If you’re having those... talk. I’m a good listener.”

Monohan was a cool guy. Busy busy, but he still too time to help people adjust in nasty situations. As a handler.
They’d met a summer or so ago, during a complicated situation. Diplomatic problems, maybe? He was not going to get into the specifics, if anyone asked. His lips were sealed!
They chatted for a little bit, and Monohan had given him the rundown. Then, he’d been called off. As previously mentioned, busy busy.
Shin nodded as the man backed off to field an important call. Then, he looked to the other guy. Sam.
Sam was wearing a black polo and khakis. Shin was wearing a black polo and khakis. The only real difference was that while Sam wore sneakers and glasses, Shin wore comfortable dark shoes and shades. To mask his triangular pupils.
The 20-something kid sized him up, then said "So do I call you Mister or what?"
Tetsuya Shinbo smiled at him. The kid was bigger than him, but size matters not.
”Shin is fine. Or Mister Shin, if you’d like... either way. One of us is going to have to change.”
Was he really calling the kid out for wearing the same thing he was? He let the moment last a second, then laughed it off. ”Kidding. Come on, I’ll give you the tour. Bye Monohan.”
He waved over his shoulder at Monohan, then started walking towards the building. Monohan could catch up with them later, if he liked.
As Sam approached the large front doors of the building, a young girl around 17 rushed past him onto the mansion grounds. She nearly ran into him, but at the last moment a sort of pressure nudged them apart by the barest fraction of an inch. Like a small push.
She was shorter than the man with dreads, at around 5’7”. Fair skin, blue-Green eyes, and short brown hair that ended around her neck rounded out her features. Well. Other than the outfit. Black polo, khaki pants, and mismatched socks under orange sneakers. She also had a katana strapped to her back. It was unclear why she had a katana.
”Watch where you’re going better, Lenna!” the Asian called after the girl. ”Not everyone likes what you do.”
The girl called back, Colombian accent thick. She sounded like Shakira. ”You know I can not control it. Perhaps people should do better watching out for me.”
The Asian opened his mouth to reply, but... she was already gone. Fast little brat. Had she jumped over the hedge into the hedge maze? Or what?
He looked back to Sam. ”Sorry about that... some of our students can be hard to control... especially when they can’t control themselves. Let’s take a look an the mansion! Anywhere special you want to see?”
He lead them into the main entrance hall, with the hardwood floors and the wide rounded staircases leading up to dorms. Everything was nice, from the furniture to pictures on the wall.
One way on the ground floor lead to offices, another to halls and classrooms. And there was downstairs.

The box was about a foot and a half by two feet in diameter, and it was wider than it was tall. It hovered in the air in front of the Asian in a forest green basket made of concentrated thoughts. And it was full of baby clothes of varying sizes.
Kealey was a fashion designer and she was Shin’s wife. It only made sense that she had worked with him to design several different baby outfits for the upcoming baby. Having never had a baby, plenty of cute pictures had been looked at for reference to baby styles. Of course, they were all gender neutral. Good-looking stuff that would be comfortable and easy to wear, in various sizes just to make sure the baby would fit, however large or small: and they’d give extra things, to make sure the baby could grow into a second wardrobe, too! And they had packed enough clothes for several wardrobes. The box really was heavy. Hence the Shard basket. He was carrying it with his mind. Because the Asian’s arms just would not have accomplished the job.
Shin particularly liked the diamonds, stars, and moons onesie and the blue and red stripey one! But there were other things. Plenty of cute animals on parade. One had a magnetism theme, and some mirrors. Shin had repeated something he’d heard someone once comment, about how Mirror had their own magnetism. And how maybe they should just do magnets, all around! But the pun had gone over like the Hindenburg.
He brought the whole thing in, and set it on the table. Because there is always at least one large table for baby shower gifts. Kealey followed him in, wearing something trendy and on point. Probably a little overdressed.
They greeted Mirror and Becca, and with a big smile he told Becca she was practically glowing. (Especially with the crystals she had going on!)
”I’m sure there will be more where this came from. Kealey had fun!” He said.
Kealey chimed in with an agreement, and said how excited she was for them. Shin told them he could help unpack it later if they have him a call.
After giving the gifts, shin and Kealey wandered off to check out the food and mingle. It was a drive by gifting if ever there was one.

What was it Shin needed again? The walk to the place had been so long and with such varied conversation, it took him a minute of wandering around before he decided it was probably coffee. And an energy drink.
He filled up the coffee, made it like he liked, grabbed an energy drink and... grabbed a bag of chili cheese corn chips. And a fruit pie. Don’t judge. He’d been injured. He needed his strength. He... tossed a second fruit pie into the bag. For red. Cherry. And a snickers in case red didn’t like cherry. After a second, he remembered the man had actually asked him for some beef jerky. Well. He was getting more than he’d bargained for. And he was getting it for free. With some of that Teaching Money Shin has. Or else, Kealey’s rich fashion designer cash. He was a kept man.
#blessed
He grabbed the beef jerky. Got himself a teriyaki jerky too.
He paid, and sacked it all. In two sacks. As he was making his way out, Red passed him some cash. Shin raised a shoulder in his own shrug, and handed Red a bag full of jerky, a cherry fruit pie, large snickers, and a bag of potato chips. It would be heavier than the guy expected, but what with the throwing of cars, Shin had no doubts the man could handle it.
He sipped his coffee as they headed out. He was beginning to feel human again.
Red commented on teaching, and Shin smiled at him sheepishly. He had just been thinking similar thoughts.
”Teaching is cool. Keeps you on your toes.” He agreed. ”As for cash. Um... wife is loaded. We do alright.”
As far as teaching credentials went...
The man asked if he wanted aspirin. He’d forgotten aspirin. Did he need aspirin? Shin took a looooong sip of coffeee. Then, he turned and went back and paid highway robbery for a teeny packet of pills.
As he came back, he cracked open the package and took a couple with coffee. Smiled.
”Good call. Anyways, teaching... I dunno. Pretty sure not everyone has teaching degrees.” He held up one finger on his free hand, the one that had the bag in its grip, and shushed. Like ‘don’t tell.’

Grumpy was an understatement. But shin had no room to judge. Wasn’t like he’d ever had a kid to keep him up.
He moved on and tried tempting Saphirus with coffee to make up.
Saphirus was... confused for a tick. Then he figured it out and decided on something he liked. Shin chuckled at his response to the cold steel comment.
Personally, Shin was ruing the pucker face lemonade. Super sour. Green. Yum!
He followed Saphirus to the drink stand. While they waited, they talked.
Shin shook his head. ”I haven’t been to a convention in years. Wasn’t really ever my bag. Wife doesn’t like the overwhelming emotional component of hundreds of people either. As for the dress up comment... it’s cosplay. Part of my power. I make the armor with my mind... and make it look like super sentai TV show characters because I, am unoriginal.” His tone was light, full of self awareness and humor.
”If you can dress as anything, bring a super hero from your favorite show is... pretty fun.” he said.
As for how things were...
”Things are good. Glad to have my powers back. That was a nasty few years. How are you?”

”No. No one sent me.” Shin said.
Could Sam think he still looked like a dork? The helmet split into tiny sections of triangles which curled backwards and in on themselves, rolling back up up onto his neck like a hoodie. They reformatted into a hood-like shape, even.
Shin gave Sam a wry smile. ”No. No dorking allowed.” He fell silent for a second, and then cleared his throat.
So! New topic. Sam has deaged? What was deAging again? Was it like... when Shin and Kealey has turned into kids and made out? Because that had been weird. Cute first kiss though, as far as retcons went!
Sam stepped forward to shake his hand, and Shin shook back. He clasped the guy’s wrist, and tried to give off positive vibes.
”I got deaged once,” the Asian noted, stroking his chin. ”Lost an entire language and ten plus years. Met my wife as a kid. As a kid. Was weird.”
Maybe that would help them connect, or reconnect, or whatever. Bond. If he lost the bond with Old Sam, this young Sam would need to become his friend.
”As for training. Sure! But let’s do a scenario that actually trains our mutations. I’ve had enough blade practice lately. Got my butt whooped by that younger one. Cait, I think her name was? Redhead? Not bad. Outfoxed me.”

Shin laughed at the party crashing comment, but didn’t have any more clever comments for it.
”Don’t now about sweater vests. But Kealey is pretty good about helping me make wise decisions regarding fashion. Doesn’t throw clothes she hates away... unless I haven’t noticed.” He shrugged.
Was she the type to do things like that? She did feel strongly about certain things, like shorts and no show socks. But she’d never throw away his clothes. She’d tell him to toss them, and leave it up to him to do the job. He’d always been somewhat fashionable, though. Even before they’d let. Maybe that was another reason they worked?
He smiled a little at Red’s joke. Then, they moved on.
He listened to the man talking about his learning. Guy had jokes. Shin smiled wryly at the comment about desks. He shrugged one shoulder.
”We could always have one commissioned.” He said mildly. ”As for teaching... well, it is rewarding. Probably doesn’t pay as much as it should. But you help people. And you learn a lot about the world, and yourself.
They reached the convenience store, and he stepped inside. The two men lurked, but did not bother them at all. Shin nabbed an energy drink from the case, and a bag of crunchy Cheetos.
He looked to Red, having completely forgotten what his original goal at the store had been. ”Want anything?”

Beneath the golden lion helmet, triangular pupils widened. Saphirus had just... gone nuclear. Over spilled coffee. What was it they said about not crying over spilled stuff? Oh yeah. Cry over spilled coffee.
Crap.
Coffee was life to some people. Shin had just ended Saphirus’s life.
He opened his mouth to apologize, and more fervently this time. But Saphirus mediated his tone and mastered himself. The Asian lion man’s shoulders relaxed... which was probably unnoticeable in the heavy plate.
”Yeah. Sorry. Usually I have more control because I make the swords with my mind. But this foam replica... I don’t know the dimensions well enough in my mind yet.” He explained.
For a guy with literal graph lined vision and perfect measurement senses, the fact he did not know the dimensions very well seemed strange. But, then he probably meant that it was large and unwieldy. Easy to underestimate its swing.
Shin pointed a gauntleted hand towards a nearby stand.
”They sell coffee. What’s your poison? Iced mocha, hot americano, the Captain Texas, the blue torch? I think they’ve got some other superhero themed drink names going on over there too. And not everything is even coffee. I think there’s a cold steel tea bag...” He joked.

Since no one from the X-men had hopped up to volunteer yet (and Shin had waited. He had waited like a good boy, looked around, and waited a good whole ten seconds!), Shin leaned forward and to grab the microphone again.
He made a mental note to back off after this, and let the other panelists take center stage. He really did not need to be an attention hog. He was not THAT huge of an egotist.
The leather-clad girl had a good question. He flat out told her so. ”Good question! Well... we have had a few people on the team, or in the X-kids, with powers less combat-oriented. They learned to protect themselves the Vanilla way, with self defense courses and lots of training. But for people who want to be heroes and aren’t interested in knowing Kung fu...” Shin paused, then glanced around somewhat embarrassedly. Suddenly, he was self conscious.
He held the mic, and looked right at the woman. ”Look. I know this is cheesy. Especially coming from me. But if you want to be a hero, be a Hero. Become a police officer. Or a fire fighter. Or a doctor. A nurse. An EMT. A teacher. Or if you already have a career, volunteer your time at homeless centers or youth centers. Become a big brother of America, sponsor a troubled teen. Or if you’re parent oriented and have the time and desire to help better someone’s life. Just one person. You could adopt. I know those are a lot of things. But there are a metric ton of ways to be a hero without putting on a garish costume and shouting BAM when you slug a criminal. And we need people in those fields. They’re real heroes.”

>> "It is in my experience the people who shout the loudest that they are smart are the true idiots. So you are probably doing alright." Red said.
Shin chuckled. ”Flatterer. You probably do well with the ladies.” He teased.
It was impossible for Red to get drunk? That was kind of sad. Some of his fondest memories were absent from when he was drunk. Or present. Along with some doozies he would rather forget.
”You’d need a keg or two. Just for you.” he said.
Which was not cost effective even if he could have gotten drunk.
He commented about the card, and Red said he wouldn’t trash it out of spite. And spandex? Shin laughed. ”My wife designs a lot of costumes for the team and she is actually a fashion designer. She would not let people go around in Spandex unless they went behind her back. She would probably make you something tasteful. If you ever wanted a nice belt.”
A nice utility belt perhaps, with pockets out the wazoo. Or well, not out the wazoo, because that would be counterintuitive to the goal of keeping your pants up and holding things on your sides. But it could have more pockets than a pair of cargo pants. Hell, he could wear as many belts as he wanted if he liked them.
So yeah, he could have his belt and avoid spandex. Shi wasn’t sure he had ever worn the stuff himself.
He shook himself, and looked to Red. ”Never been to school? Eh. It’s not so bad. You would hate it. Some people like it so much they get jobs teaching so they can get extra years in the place.”
He had no idea who thought school was hell. Maybe teen Shin?

Oh god. Young Sam, with the curve ball question. Somebody call someone.
He had asked about... himself. He probably felt so damn cool. He was about to make some choice comments, but someone beat him to the punch.
Saphirus handled the questions pretty well, for a guy Shin had a feeling wasn’t entirely used to the convention scene. Not that he, himself, was. Except for the flexing. That was just silly. As if mutations had anything to do with physique.
Saphirus jokes about Sam being 12, and that wasn’t quite fair, but then he turned the question over to him and Shin actually had to think.
Was he feeling any envy?
”Oh yeah~,” He grinned, leaning into the microphone. ”I am totally envious of the wagon he uses to cart around his big head some days. That, is a nice wagon.” He looked to Saphirus. ”Isn’t that a nice wagon? Radio Flyer or something? I think he stole it from a Girl Scout. Might’ve been his girlfriends ride? Eh. But more seriously, folks—“
He grabbed the mic and changed his tone.
”We X-men are a team. It takes all sorts. Saphirus and I focus more on helping the police, and sorting out violent mutant crime in the city. We patrol. Might not have much time to go out and punch volcanoes. Cold Steel, or Rhyme or Rhythm and Blues, or whatever he wants to call himself today... we may tease him a little from time to time. That’s how teammates operate. I still think he’s a valued member of the team, no matter his current situation. Maybe a little goofy, asking questions about himself, but hey. If you ever need someone to help keep your ice cream frosty... he is handy to have around.”
He smiled, smiled, smiled at the cosplayer who had asked the question.
”As for his diamond hard physique— I am literally wearing diamond hard armor made with my mind. Who cares if I have a six pack? Ask silly questions, get silly answers, right?” He shrugged and replaced the microphone.

He said the guys name, aaaaand Sam got knocked to the ground. Whoopsie.
At least he turned it around and took down his attacker. Choked him out. It was honestly a little brutal. And, he was still fighting. While chatting. In the danger room. Typical Sam.
”Going good.” Shin said.
He stood there, awkwardly. In full plate.
Finally, Sam took off the blindfold and paused the session. He turned back towards him, and Shin realized. Sam did not look as normal Sam do. He did not act the same, either. Acted like he did not know... him. Hmm.
Shard stepped into the danger room, warily. Beneath the helmet, he eyed not-Sam.
”I was gonna train. But it looks like you’re already using the room.” Shin said carefully. He stopped several feet from this Sam. This younger Sam. Within social distance. ”Unless you are cool with me training with you. Sam?”
”My name is Shin, by the way. Underneath the armor. Did you get shrunk or something? You look younger... would explain why you don’t remember this armor. Used to use it around you all the time. You thought I looked like a dork.”
Sam actually had said nothing of the sort. But hey, he did sort of look like a dork. A cool dork! But also a huge nerd. Which he was.

The shining golden armor did not clank with each footstep as Shin approached the doorway. It sounded like normal foot steps... even though it was heavy looking plate armor, shining and golden. With a helmet in the shape of a fierce lion. He had been donning the thing more and more, to the point it was basically his X uniform now. It, and the big old double-edged long sword he held over one shoulder. Shard armor for a Shard man. He stopped in front of the door.
The light said someone was in the danger room. But Shin had not focused on the light. His focus had been on opening the door.
A nice bonus of wearing armor made from the psychic energy of one’s mind is that it doubles as protective gloves. With the whole scare going on now, his shard armor also protected him from icky stinky germies... not that he’d worn it specifically for this reason. He was training. Yeah, and if someone coughed on him he would be safe.
The door slid open. The man in golden lion armor stepped inside the danger room.
There was another man fighting for his life, just beyond the door.
Why was it, people favored the old school lasers and saw blades of the danger room now? More and more, people forgot about the reality-bending illusions and hard light constructs! The laser deathbots! The giant blastoise paintings on the ground you could ask for! And the upside down stair cases of confusion. And balls. Lots and lots of tennis balls, for doggies. No, this guy fighting for his life was not dealing with laser deathbots. He was not even up to his face in balls. He was... wearing a blindfold, of all things. And flinging ice. At least he had the taste enough to use robot men. It was a step below laser deathbots, sure. But it was a step above saw blades and laser beams.
Ice. Danger room. Yep. There was pretty much only one person this could be. Shin called out loud and proud. ”Heyyyy Sam!!”
He had no idea that Sam had recently been turned into a kid. If he had, he might not have distracted him while he was fighting for his life. Then again, maybe he would.

Again, she went with the flow of combat and surged towards him. The girl twisted her body to guard against his blade, then dismissed her second blade.
He had not caught the smile. He was focused on footwork, and the positioning their weapons. Her little move to dismiss the dagger, and is red his own motion against him was a good one. If he hadn’t been focused on that blade, he might not have been able to react properly. Now that things had grown hairy.
It was funny, she thought she was at a disadvantage. He thought HE was at a disadvantage.
She jerked her arm around, and tried to hit him. Tried to tie up his arm. Shin kept his blade up by the side of his head as he stole a page from her playbook and with with it, turning his chest slightly as he went, to tank the blow. Then, he surged forward now that they seee real close.
Things happened in rapid succession. Shin let go of her arm. Shin tried to butt her in the forehead with his head... and directly following that, he tried to do some of that fancy footwork in order to bring a leg up behind her leg so he could hook it with his foot as she reeled. Or kick her. Whichever worked. If the attack even worked that way, of course. Otherwise, he’d have taken a good punch and tried to honk his head just to leave her open to attack him if she somehow slipped under his guard.
Battles are confusing. Blade fights, even moreso. Shin had never really had any sword training except a brief series of aikido lessons as a child. He was going largely by feel and anime... and whatever horrible lessons he had taught himself along the way. She was arguably better with blades than him.
