The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Trace waited a moment as the dark haired boy led Michael Hunter out of the room. He leaned his head down on the table, the weight of everything he'd just said hitting him all at once. Things had been seriously messed up for him lately. And now, he found himself sitting in the gun-filled conference room of the alternate reality version of the woman sitting down the table from him. Life sure was a crazy place.
Rianne spoke up about the boots that Michael was wearing. Of course she liked them. He was her. And she was him. They were bound to have similar tastes. Hell, their lives were probably fairly similar. "So what do you think of our friend Mr. Hunter here?" he asked of Rianne. "And of course you shouldn't be worried. I always land on my feet." he said with a grin.
From down the table he heard someone say "My name's Raine."
Well, of course, her name wasn't actually Zero. That wouldn't make any kind of sense whatsoever. But it wasn't really the name that had thrown him. It was her tone. He turned and looked at her, observing a few things. She seemed... pulled away. Almost reserved. It was different. She hadn't seemed that reserved before. She had always been a bit more connected. "Are you okay, Raine?" he asked, concern painting his face. Had he said something that had upset her? The only thing he'd really talked about had been his work history. "What's wrong?" Trace asked.
Jude must have been raring to say something, given the opportunity he launched into it, “Okay. So, you know I try not to bother you in meetings, especially after the Boots thing, but that blonde is Lori Faust and she's deep into genetic testing on mutants with or without their consent. Like. Not limited to kidnapping. If she's here for a job, please say no."
Ranger blinked. This was the second woman that Jude had pulled him out of the room to tell him about. Was this going to be a thing? Regardless, Jude was wrong. This woman was from acros the rip, at best she was that universe’s Lori. It was weird that doppelgangers would be younger.
”I’ve met Lori, that idn’t… Wait. Genetic testin’ on mutants? I knew she could be a little twisted, but that’s a horse of another color.”
It had been years since he had paid Lori any real thought. Their meeting had been, interesting. Beyond that she was someone that Lenna had interacted with.
"So what do you think of our friend Mr. Hunter here?"
Rianne really didn’t have much to go on to assess herself in this universe. He was more unabashedly Texan than she was. His attire, his accent, his armory of a boardroom. He was successful, but where the money really came from was a potential issue. Was it all above board? What had he done that this became his life? The military was her guess. He had the look of someone who had been in the thick of it somewhere. Not a run of the mill infantryman.
Rianne looked at trace and said, ”I have questions. He’s the me from this universe, crazy I know, but there’s more difference between us than what’s between our legs.”
She smiled back at his grin. He did seem to land on his feet. ”I would have guessed you’d land somewhere else, Butt-Fairy.” She cocked her head to the side and shrugged. Go figure.
"My name's Raine."
It wasn’t as lively as she had been earlier. Rianne looked to her and before she could say something Trace asked if she was okay. She had just heard Trace talk about a dark seedy side of the government back home. An agency in the government which Rianne had tied herself to. And that Trace had left.
That might cause problems in the future. Like as soon as she reports in on her side of the portal, or rip as she’d heard it called.
It was a weird think to think about that both her and Raine’s lives had been affected by Trace in a SUPER way that led them both to this universe. She had become involved with SUPER after encountering him, and Raine had been on the run after she met him. Both had tried to reach him the day the rip happened.
And both Rianne and Trace knew one name for Raine. Trace knew Zero (where did she know that name from?) and Rianne knew Raine. Now the three of them sat in a room. A weird reunion for the three despite having never been the three of them before.
And Raine seemed a little distant. Had the pair of them not become roommates of necessity following the rip, Rianne might have only cared a little. As it was, Rianne had fought to keep above water with the woman. Had Trace not asked she would have.

Did Michael Hunter have to be so ******* quaint?
"Yes. She's got a freaking evil laboratory. Or dungeon. Whatever you want to call it people are donating blood against their will and/or disappearing for spans of time. I don't know anyone lately, but I know enough over the years. That's not the kind of people you want in house."
What was wrong? Well, besides the fact that Rianne just called Trace a butt-fairy...
"I have privileged information about the people you used to work for. Stuff I'm sure they don't want me to know." Or any of the X-men for that matter, but she was going to try to keep them out of this and safe if possible. Heck. They had gathered physical proof of certain ties to the funding of the operation, didn't they? Raine hadn't gone on that particular mission, but what she'd seen was pretty damning. Raine started off carefully like her words were hard to chew through. "Is that why you were there that day? To—" kill me? She couldn't even finish the thought in so bold an accusation. She pivoted mid-sentence. "—tie up loose ends?"
She'd built him up in her head like a hero. It was soul crushing to think that despite eventually doing the right thing, that the initial premise for Trace's presence was less than heroic.
But... He'd dived in to pull her out of the way before she'd been aware that he was there. That meant... he'd had time to make a difference choice. It was too much to believe that it was coincidence. That he'd just been there and that he'd only been in reach of her. That meant he'd already decided that he wouldn't kill her, right? Because, he got to make decisions like that working where he did.
Raine made herself relax. This side of the rift, mutants had rights that she didn't back home. Hospitals were duty bound to help. A lawyer might take her case. Somebody might listen, if she blew the whistle on SUPER.
"I should probably butt out of y'all's business. Your interview. Your copy, Rianne." The y'all was proof that she'd been hanging out with Rianne too much. She could find somewhere else to be. That might be good, actually.
Trace frowned at her response. Privileged information? Oh that didn't sound good. That was definitely the kind of thing that could get you killed by a shadow government agency that's existence was denied by the very same government that it served. That fact had probably occurred to Raine by now. Trace could almost see the gears turning in her head. Oh no.
Then, she said it. "Is that why you were there that day? To--"
In that instant, Trace's mind went into overdrive. What had he really been there for? He'd been ordered to tail her. Was that the mission? Was it implied that he was supposed to kill her? Was there some kind of subtext that he hadn't read into in the orders? Trace's suspicions had been confirmed the moment they'd tried to kill Raine. But until that point? Had that almost happened because Trace hadn't acted?
"--tie up loose ends?" Trace sighed and shook his head. "You're not a loose end Raine. No, I was not under orders to kill you. I wouldn't have even if I was. I'll be straight with you: I was assigned to investigate you. You know, find out your relations. Who your friends were." he said, the implication made, but not overly emphasized.
"Up until that day, I'd had growing doubts. I'd never caught an assignment where I'd had to take a life. I know that others had. It was all line-of-duty and him-or-me stuff. But I'd never made that choice. It wasn't an option for me. I'm wondering if I wasn't paying close enough attention. That maybe I should have caught it sooner. I'm sorry. I thought I was doing the right thing." He explained. It sounded a bit hollow. Suitable, because that's how Trace felt.
Raine then made an excuse to get up and leave. "Raine, you're one of the only two people I know in this entire universe. Literally. I'm pretty sure that regardless of what's going on, if you want it to be your business, you're welcome to it. I know I'd feel better with you here. But if you need to leave, I understand." Trace said simply. It really wasn't time to mince words.
Ranger had been derailed while telling Jude that the woman in the room wasn’t Lori. Now Jude was busy explaining just how evil Lori was. She sounded like some mad scientist. Jude seemed convinced of it though.
”Jude. I would never give Lori a job, I can assure y’ of that.” He gestured to the door, ”That ain’t Lori. It looks like Lori, but she’s too young. Younger than when we.. uh… crossed paths.”
What’s wrong was that Raine had privileged information and thought Trace had been at the school to kill her. She hadn’t said it, but the hiccup in her sentence spoke volumes. And Trace jumped in to provide a an immediate no followed by what he was doing. Investigation. Why investigate Raine though? She was just a nineteen year old kid…
And a vigilante.
The name Zero clicked finally. She’d heard it in relation to the vigilante organization the Xmen. If Raine was with that group that might explain why SUPER was interested in her. Sure they tried to do right, but the law was the law and without law you just have anarchy and that just brings fear and despair. That could make it awkward if they ran into each other back across the rip while she was being Zero.
Raine tried to make an excuse to leave. Trace again was on it. He was good with people. When he finished Rianne placed her hand on Raine’s shoulder and added, ”He’s my copy, but you’re my backup.” Raine had insisted that she was going to be Rianne’s backup when she went to meet her copy. As much as Rianne had found the notion of her accompanying her as back up silly, it was nice knowing someone had her back when she knew literally no one else in the whole world. Until they ran into Trace, now two people in the whole world.”What if he turns out to be some crazy? He’s clearly a hoplophile, that’s halfway there.”

> "...uh... crossed paths."
Jude's mouth fell open. Michael Hunter, Ranger and hoplophile, had gotten it on with Lori. His brain just shut down because the pieces didn't fit and in trying to make them fit, he imagined things that could not be unimagined. It was too easy with a younger version of her face having just waltzed through. It was... NOPE. NOPENOPENOPENOPENOPENOPE.
"I. Have. Paperwork. For the new hire. I'll go. Do that. Leave it. You desk."
Well. At least he wasn't hiring her. Jude scurried away before his brain had a chance to fully restart after it's hard shutdown.
> "You're not a loose end, Raine..."
Trace explained and Raine felt the color drain out of her cheeks. So... did he find the X-men? Had she unwittingly outed them to SUPER? She'd heard talk of the last X-man to do that and it was so not her intention. What had been going on across the rip while she'd been playing busboy and maid? Suddenly Raine really, really wanted to know. She looked back and forth between Rianne and Trace, both so patient and overtly nice. It was difficult to imagine that the SUPER she knew was the SUPER they had known.
It must have shown on her face. She hated being an open book, but in this instance it helped Trace walk her through how he'd looked into it. How he'd been duped too.
> "Raine, you're one of the only two people I know in this entire universe. Literally..."
> ”He’s my copy, but you’re my backup.”
While Raine didn't know what a holophile was, she decided to sit back down rather than make a scene. What an odd bunch they were: A policewoman, a secret agent, and a vigilante walk into a bar...
"So. Did you learn much? Not much to report after that history lesson..." She tried to make it a joke, but her newfound paranoia was kicking in again to suggest that maybe the goatman wasn't an accident. How silly was that? "Surely not even SUPER would set a murdering goat loose in a class full of kids. That's just... right? That's crazy?"

Trace stopped to consider for a moment. "I learned a ton. I pretty much learned that my history with SUPER was a lie." he said, an air of humor to his statement. He frowned at the implications that would be tied to SUPER releasing the goatman on a college class. It didn't fit the playbook. Not at all. Their experiments always seemed to begin with people disappearing, not with demons showing up in the middle of a classroom. "I don't think so. It doesn't fit their pattern. They were always more of the snatch and grab type. But, I suppose anything is possible." Trace said.
Trace spared a look at Rianne. He had to ask an awkward question. And he really didn't want to. "I know you're tied up in all of this business with SUPER because of me. What are you going to do? I've violated OpSec no less than a dozen times today. Not to mention the shooting incident on the other side. And the fight with Stalker. Geez, this list just keeps getting longer. Are you going to try to take me back?" he asked, hoping he already knew the answer. He'd been friends with Rianne longer than she'd been affiliated with SUPER. But she was a duly appointed officer of the law and she had her duty.
There was a gigantic hole in the universe. Ending up in a fight with a friend wouldn't nearly be the strangest thing to happen. He really didn't want it to come to that. At all. But between the choice of ending up in SUPER's hands... There really wasn't any other choice at all.

It was clear Jude took that to mean something he didn’t want to or couldn’t process at that moment. Probably that Ranger and Lori had sex, which was true. Yet, was also much worse than that... Ranger had no problem letting Jude think that was what had happened.
Jude had fumbled about but said he was getting paperwork for the new hire and was going to take it to Ranger’s desk. He would wait on Jude to grab that before he went back in. The three were having a reunion this side of the rip. They could have a few minutes.
Raine returned to her seat and then brought up the possibility that SUPER had let loose Totes McGoats. If Trace was right, SUPER was abducting and experimenting on mutants. Sure there were a lot of laws regarding use of mutant powers, but mutants were still people with rights. Life, Liberty, Property as Locke put it and as the Bill of Rights guarantees… If they were abducting people, they had to have a warrant right? Even if it was from the FISA Court and was top secret. Releasing something like that in a classroom was beyond what they would do. Certainly…
Trace didn’t think it fit SUPER’s pattern. Which was good. Rianne didn’t think she could handle working for an agency that did that. Trace then spoke to Rianne. What was she going to do now? He had violated SUPER’s OpSec and in so doing committed treason. He was involved in a shooting. He resisted a lawful detention from a Federal agent.
It was quite the rap sheet.
Rianne looked away, unsure. Trace had committed a laundry list of crimes and admitted to them. Why he did them may make sense, but the law was the law. Except…
”I... “ She looked back to Trace as realization dawned, ”don’t have jurisdiction. I’m an officer on the other side of the rip, not here. This might as well be Canada for how much authority I have here.” Being in the other universe finally had an upside. ”I might get asked about you when I show back up, but I can bend the truth a little. I ran into you, but you got away. Not like they can find out the truth.”
Besides, she was only a liaison officer not an actual SUPER agent.

Okay. Now they could totally hug. Raine had more warm fuzzies than she knew what to do with. It was Trace's turn to expose his insecurities and Raine watched the other woman with certainty. Rianne would decide to do the right thing. She might decide that what was right was taking Trace in, but if anybody knew what was right, it'd be her.
As Rianne looked away, Raine realized that if the officer decided to take Trace in... she might fight her. Raine would help Trace not go back to SUPER. In fact, Raine was now wishing that Rianne didn't have anything left to do with SUPER. Going across the rift just seemed like so much of a risk, but who knew how long it would be open? Was it really worth trying to make a life here when she already had one over there?
That question could only be answered by someone across the rift that Raine trusted. If she wanted to go home, only Rianne would tell her the truth about what she could expect. So she had to let her go...
> "This might as well be Canada for how much authority I have here."
Raine let out a breath of relief mixed with incredulity. Officer Hunter did it again. The right thing and somehow it was also still legal.
"I know you will, but be really careful on the other side of the universe, Rianne." She had a lot of selfish hope wrapped up in Rianne returning.
And speaking of selfish... "Let's get you a job, Trace. Then you can afford to take us all out to lunch."

Trace let out a sigh of relief. Canada. Right. This was one instance where a jurisdictional issue was a good thing. He smiled and nodded his thanks at Rianne, stating "Why do I always seem to end up owing you one every time we interact?" he said, the joke evident. In truth, Rianne had saved his Bacon several times. He wouldn't have fought her if he'd had to. But then again, on some level, he'd known he wouldn't have to. She was good people. It wouldn't have ended that way.
That obnoxious truth-speaking voice in the back of his head spoke up again at that moment. You can't go home after this. You've done too much. They'll put you down on sight. it nagged at him. It was right. SUPER, let alone the government as a whole would be all over him if he set one toe back through that rift. He couldn't even guarantee that he was safe here. They very well might come looking in this side. He didn't know.
Raine snapped him out of that dark line of thought. She had a great talent for doing that, even though she had no idea it was even a thing. She implored Rianne to be careful on the other side of the rift. Trace had to agree. "I have to agree, Barbie. No matter how indestructible you are, SUPER isn't something to mess around with. If there was any way to avoid it, I wouldn't even have you go back across." Trace said before waiting a beat. "Wait, why are you going back again?" he asked, realizing he didn't know the answer.
Raine went on to make a comment about getting him a job so he could buy them lunch. "If I get this job, I'll buy you all the happy meals you can handle." The truth was, that was going to be all he could afford until the paychecks started rolling in. "Speaking of which... Hunter's been gone a while. Wonder what's going on..." he said, unconsciously looking at Rianne
Rianne smiled at Trace’s comment. He didn’t end up owing her every time they interacted. Just every time anything happened. Like fire mutants and a sudden winter at Valley Forge in the middle of Summer. ”I’m from Texas, it’s the natural order of things.” The shift to joking was something nice, distancing the conversation from where it could have almost gone South.
Raine told Rianne to be careful and Trace seconded the thought before asking why she was going back. ”Raine and I have been working nothing but jobs that pay under the table and staying in a hotel in the running for being the seediest in the city. We have homes, lives, and stuff back there, and I’m going to see if it is safe for Raine to return. If not I can collect money and things and bring them back here.” Looking between the pair of them she added, ”And I’ll be careful. I’m not indestructable, I just know what I can and can’t do. I won’t stick my neck out too far.” She did not want to get a first hand look at these labs Raine had told her about.
Get Trace the job so he could buy them all the happy meals they could handle. Rianne wasn’t a fan of fast food, but fast food was food and she had been eating less than normal since she got stuck on this side of the rip. ”Sounds like a great plan.”
And when Trace mentioned her copy being gone he looked right at her. Like she would know where he was. What did she look like, her own keeper? ”Whatever the kid needed must have been important.” Rianne shrugged.
The door opened and Ranger stepped back into the room. He carried a folder full of paper which he set on the table. ”Sorry ‘bout that.“ He pulled a few pages from the folder before sliding it to Trace. ”So y’ went rogue after it turned out the government was supporting Brukhonenko an’ Mengele level cruelties. I can respect that.” Ranger indicated the folder he’d passed over, ”Job description, wage, an’ benefits. Since y’ walked in here y’ could only have hurt y’r prospects. At least f’r now y’ll be off the books, paid in cash, an’ used openly only on certain jobs. I need someone with y’r experience, but y’ don’t have any identification. We’ll see what we can do about that.”
The papers detailed that Trace would operate as security most days, but would also be tasked with intel gathering for specific jobs as needed. Mostly he would work at Blac-Tac and Haden’s Havens. The nature of those two locations allowed Ranger more freedom to fudge reports if there was an incident Trace ended up involved in. His compensation would be in cash and based on the type of work he was doing. There was a base salary that would be enough to live in New York City, but as he did Alpha level jobs he would receive significantly greater payment. Due to the nature of his employment his benefits would be more interesting. Money would be set aside to aid in medical payments and to help him find a place to stay.

There was plenty of time to twiddle their thumbs and consider popping out to the hallway, but before anyone felt the need to take action Mr. Rianne was back. What was his name? Ryan, maybe? He had a job for Trace, easy as that. Raine as stunned, but that wasn't even all this dude was offering.
> "...y’ don’t have any identification. We’ll see what we can do about that.”
"God damn." She was impressed and that came through her tone, which she realized was entirely inappropriate half a second after the first syllable popped out from between her lips. Raine slapped her hand over her mouth, aghast.
"I just mean. Resources and flexibility like that are... You just... in front of an officer..." She cleared her throat and unfortunately the earth did not swallow her up in that moment. There was no escaping. She just had to power through to the end. "I just. Uh. I mean. Sir. You have any more of those fake identities. Just. You know. An extra...?" She cringed because even she knew that wasn't how it worked.

Trace nodded and felt reassured. If Rianne was at least aware of the danger she was in, he was incredibly confident in the fact that she'd be able to take care of herself. He'd never seen someone with the physical acumen she'd displayed in some of their past encounters. Hell, she may have actually been indestructible. He didn't really know. He'd seen some crazy stuff in his day. It didn't seem like the kind of thing she'd cop to even if it was true.
Just then, Michael Hunter walked back into the room. He gave a pretty decent summary of exactly what had happened and highlighted that Trace had stood up to the likes of Brukhonenko and Mengele. They were two pretty heavy hitters in the creep department back home in World War II. Trace assumed that, at least, that part of history was the same over here. They were sociopaths. The kind who, in their minds, were right and even the heroes of their own stories. That was the very real, very dangerous path that people with power tended to tread if they weren't careful. It was incredibly important to have people that kept you in check. Like the two that were sitting near him.
He set a folder on the table detailing what Trace read as a very straightforward unofficial employment agreement. The pay was generous for someone who wasn't officially employed. It would keep him clothed and fed. He'd be able to find somewhere that'd take cash to stay. And there were plenty of options for Trace to be able to work extra duty and some covert missions where he could earn some extra cash. Hunter might come to regret that decision. Or maybe not. It'd be really interesting to see exactly how that one worked out. And if they were amenable to it, Trace could probably offer Raine and Rianne a place to stay when they were on this side. It would probably be nicer than where they were staying. There was going to be money set aside to pay for his benefits and health care.
Trace read it over again and looked up at the Texan. "This all looks to be in order here. I'll be interested in some of these extra duty opportunities detailed here. I'm not planning on going back to the other side. It's not safe for me. If I can put down anything permanent, I will. Just let me know what I need to do." he said, straightforward and to the point. That felt nice. It wasn't a luxury he'd been afforded at his other job. Trace signed the document in front of him.

The offer Michael made Trace sounded impressive from what Rianne could hear. For someone who had been in the situation she and Raine had been in, it sounded fantastic. Paid in cash, some kind of benefits, and help getting identification. If Michael actually paid up, and the money was enough to actually live on she would be really impressed.
The question was how someone running a security company was going to help with the issue of identification. This seemed to be what Raine latched onto as well. At first she seemed concerned with what Michael had said given that Rianne was an officer, but moved along to seeing if he could get more of them.
Normally Rianne would not condone fake identification, but Trace had no other recourse. He was just as trapped as Raine was and Rianne had been until now. What with her being able to go home.
”I’m not talkin’ about fake ID’s.” Ranger said to Raine, a little more curtly than he may have intended. He was not stranger to false documentation, he had worked using false passports in the past. It was just when an underaged girl asks for a fake ID is mind goes to McLovin level documentation. Something to get you beer. ”I can get Trace in contact with an attorney and I can lean of some old buddies at the State Department. See if we can’t get him refugee status. I can see what I could do for y’ as well.” It might not end up costing Ranger much more to help Zero as well as Trace, but if he flatly said no Trace might not take the deal.
Trace did decide to accept Ranger’s offer. He stipulated that he would not return to the other side of the rip. ”I can agree t’ that. As for discussin' the other assignments, I cain't disclose anythin' in present company. No offense, ladies” Trace, as a source of intel on the other side, was too valuable to send back and risk his arrest.
"None taken." Rianne said as she wondered what exactly Michael would have Trace doing.
”Y’ can start tomorrow. I’ll have someone get y’ a uniform an’ walk y’ through what y’ll be doin’. In the meantime, y’ got a place t’ stay an’ keep y’r head down?”
While all of this sounded good, Rianne had a suspicion that not everything Michael did was above board. Sure, she wasn’t going to complain he was breaking employment law since it was that or Trace was out in the cold, but Michael willingness to bend or break rules when he say a benefit for himself left Rianne wondering about how he would use Trace’s skills.

Apparently Mr. Rianne's identification wasn't going to be fake and the implication that it was, was an affront to Mr. Rianne's good nature. It was good to see that he wasn't just a roll over and take it kind of guy, but still. If Raine wanted beer, she'd just go to a fraternity party. She assumed that it wasn't any different on this side of the universe and nobody carded or cared (unless the police were around).
So. Was Raine going to impose in order to ride that train to get an ID? Mr. Rianne could bet his ass, she would. Raine glanced at the only other woman in the room, the one who Raine's hopes of returning were all wrapped up in.
She could wait 2 weeks. If Rianne didn't come back, she'd have to have a fall back plan and being a pain to someone wasn't her ideal, but it would be worth it if it allowed her to go back to school and exist legally speaking.
"Thanks." She wished she had a hat to tip. Mr. Rianne seemed like a hat tipper.
> "In the meantime, y’ got a place t’ stay an’ keep y’r head down?”
Raine cleared her throat. She was just about to lose her roommate, but she was absolutely not about to suggest that Trace LastName move into a fleabag motel with her. Even if it would help ease the cost of it. Even if he'd promised to buy her a Happy Meal. Nope. This little Rainebow was just going to keep her nose out of Mr. Trace's business now.
