The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

They continued to hold hands as they walked. Just... holdin' hands, and such. Bailey attempted to convince himself that there was absolutely nothing weird happening.
That was, until Elke came right out and said something about it. Bailey released a long breath that he hadn't noticed he'd been holding. "Ohthankgod. I have no idea! I don't go on dates!" He admitted loudly, with a concerned expression. "Can we just let go now? My hand is all sweaty."
They had been walking for a little while, and they'd very nearly reached the bus stop. Bailey was a little sad that she had to go, actually. He quite liked hanging out with her. Even if things had been a little weird and perhaps a tad scary.
He grinned at her when she thanked him. She clearly did not hang around with many kids their age. "You don't need to thank me. It was fun. Let's... uh... hang out again sometime."
Realizing that they wouldn't really have a way to get in touch again, Bailey pulled out his phone. "Can I have your number? That'll be easier than sending a clone to tackle me each time."

Bailey took his mug gratefully and sipped from it. It tasted exactly how he thought it would. Coffee-y and sweet. A great combination. "Thanks," he said, more into the mug than into the air. The effect was an echoey, muffled noise that only sort of sounded like the intended word.
>>"An aura is the field around you inside which mutant powers don't work. Different adapteds have auras of different sizes. Mine is about seven feet in radius. Sadly, it seems to be a permanent field that we cannot turn on and off. I have never encountered an adapted who had... other abilities, but I assume they might exist. It is all about human genetics keeping up with mutations."
The woman definitely knew her stuff, Bailey realized. She knew way, way more than he did, and probably ever would have without meeting her. He listened intently, only chiming in when he had something important to add. "Oh, that thing. I've always just called it my area or my radius. Mine's probably similar to yours.
"But, like, we can't turn it off at all? I knew that I'd never been able to, but I always thought that someone would make, like, an adapted box, or bracelet, or something that would be able to shut off our powers. Is there nothing like that?"
>>"Mutants react differently to adapteds. Some think we are nature's weapon against them... which is in no way the case. Within the school, some students tend to keep their distance from me, because they don't like their powers being nulled. I let each new student know what I am, so that they can make that decision. Others tend to seek me out, to take a break from mutations they cannot turn off. It is all about negotiation."
It sounded like mutants had a similar reaction to her as they did to him. People either tended to avoid him or want to spend all their time around him. A few people were indifferent, but they were mostly the sort with boring powers or powers that they could like without. "Do you have any crazy stories about it?" He asked with a grin. He had a few of his own, but he figured that she probably had way more than he did, given her constant proximity to mutants.

Looking at the two girls with a guilty expression, Bailey followed after the security guard. It was probably very good that they were going to separate places, given all that had just happened.
He walked through the mall hallway, scuffing his sneakers along the floor as he went. Lukas was still walking funny, despite having been kicked ten minutes before. Bailey figured that it must've been a really hard kick. That, or Lukas was a total baby.
In the back of the crowd, Bailey spotted their friends. They were watching with wide eyes, staying silent, as they didn't want to also be taken away by the security guard. Bailey didn't blame them, but he was also jealous. He did not want his dad to be called down to pick him up. Or even worse, one of his brothers.
He and Lukas were led to a little room in the back of the mall behind a washroom. It was rather dingy, and smelled pretty bad, but it could have been worse. They were directed to two seats across from an ugly desk. In the back of the room, there was a holding cell. Bailey hoped that they wouldn't have to make use of that.
"So, you two are going to explain what happened while I look through the tape again," the security guard, whose name tag read 'Dale', explained.

She had not let go of his hand.
Repeat: she had not let go of his hand.
He had offered it to her in order to help her up, but it seemed that she had thought they were going to hold hands, or something? Bailey just stared at their hands, entirely unsure of what to make of it. He didn't know exactly what the protocol was supposed to be for that situation. Was he supposed to shake her off? Keep holding her hand? The second option seemed less rude, so that's what he went with.
He was sort of aware that she was talking, but he hadn't really been listening. There were too many other things going on. He tuned in to the end of what she was saying, though, and caught something about arrows and bows. That made sense. Sorta.
"Mhmm. Sure," Bailey nodded absently. He was still holding her hand. It was starting to get sweaty. "We should, uh, get going."
He moved toward the door slowly, waiting for Elke to follow so he didn't rip her arm out of her socket.

Bailey's attention was diverted from the scene with the winged girl over to a security guard. Two security guards, actually.
"Uh, everything's fine. Sorry. Just a misunderstanding," he tried to explain to the first guard. How could he explain what had just happened? It was a bit of a blur, even to him. Lukas nodded along with the explanation, still awkwardly clutching at his crotch.
The security guard looked the two of them up and down, and then looked over at the two girls on the ground. "Sorry, kid. Not buying it," he announced gruffly. Bailey couldn't exactly blame him, though. It was a strange scene to find in the middle of the mall.
Luckily, Bailey stepping away had allowed the girl to get feeling back in her wings. He could breathe easy for that reason. Everything else was going to ****, but at least she was feeling better.
The guard approached the two girls and then looked back at the boys. "You four are going to need to come with me," he pointed to them and then back to where the security office was. "You have some explaining to do. Oh, and if you don't I'll be calling the cops. And your parents. I'm sure that none of you want that, do you?"

Bailey simply nodded in response to the girl's statement. He didn't even know whether or not he and Lukas were technically friends, but all of a sudden, they were a lot closer.
Lukas gave the girl the middle finger as he attempted to straighten himself out.
While the two boys had been busy with their own things, the second girl, the creepy one, was apparently freaking out. She was screaming and grabbing at her back....
Oh.
Oh shit.
Bailey knew exactly what was going on. It was his fault that she was freaking out. She was standing in his radius, and he was nullifying her powers. Well, he was nullifying her wings. He could only imagine what a horrible feeling that would be.
Abandoning his friend, Bailey stepped out of the six foot range. Lukas stayed there, looking at the girl with a disgusted expression.
A crowd had begun to form around them, and two mall security guards appeared at either side of them. "What's the problem over here?" One of them asked.

Bailey had known that it wouldn't be a good idea to engage either of the two girls, even before Lukas stepped forward. Something about the situation just had Bad Idea written all over it.
However, Lukas didn't seemed to get that idea. Bailey stayed back as he watched his friend threaten a little girl, and then subsequently get both kicked in the nuts, and elbowed in the back. A chorus of 'oohs', both mocking and empathetic in nature, erupted from the group of boys. None of them moved to help their friend.
In fact, the group collectively took a step backward. One boy, Shane, turned his head toward his friends and motioned away from the scene, indicating that he thought they should split. Everyone except Bailey nodded in agreement.
In just a few seconds, Bailey had been abandoned at his post. He took a deep breath and then moved forward to peel his friend, who had collapsed completely, off of the mall floor.
He picked his friend off of the ground slowly, allowing him to clutch his injuries tentatively. Bailey was very glad that he was not in Lukas' position. "Sorry again," he muttered. He was definitely within six feet of the two girls.

Bailey had made a terrible mistake.
A terrible, horrible mistake.
He’d thought that saying something about the store would make him fit in with his new friends, and well, he was correct. It had worked for a minute or two. His friends had taken to what he said quite well, although they had acted in a way that Bailey wasn’t crazy about.
So, everything had seemed to be coming up Bailey for all of 30 seconds.
Then, they had caught the attention of two girls standing nearby. One looked very young. Too young to be shopping in a store like Bosom Buddies. The other just looked… well… slightly terrifying. He did not want to step any closer to her.
However, as terrifying as the one girl looked, it was the little one that lashed out at the teens. Bailey’s head recoiled into his neck as he looked at her, utterly ashamed for what he had said.
“S-sorry,” he muttered, putting his hands up in the air as a sign of surrender. He was not going to engage. Nope, not going to engage.
His friends had different ideas.
Lukas, a particularly ‘cool’ guy that Bailey didn’t really care for, walked up to Abby and crouched down to get on her level. He had a wide smile on his face, and he was chuckling as he looked at her. “Hey kiddo, I know you have no idea what you just said, so I’ll let that slide. But you know, you really shouldn’t insult people older and bigger and smarter than you. I can cause a lot of problems for you.”

The teen frowned, trying to think of a better name than the one that he'd pulled from the top of his head. He grinned as soon as a good one came to mind. "Fine, what about 'The Arm-y', or something?" He suggested and flailed his arms around in the same manner as before.
So she was a fairy. Bailey chuckled at that thought. "So where are your wings, then? Oh, and do you also grant wishes?" Granting wishes would be awesome, Bailey figured. Way better than just plain old power nullification. Plus, it'd be super useful, especially in school.
"Not far, really. Just a few blocks. Fifteen minutes tops," he shrugged. He wasn't exactly sure why she seemed so nervous about it, really. It would be a short walk, and it was better than standing around in a closed store.
Unless... she was scared of him? He went a little pale when he realized that that was very possibly the case. He was a stranger that she had just met, who was asking her to come to his house (well, walk to it, anyway) in the middle of the night. "Uh- you don't have to come if you don't want to though! It was just a suggestion 'cause you're fun to talk to! If you think it's weird, then don't worry about it. I promise that I wasn't gonna murder you or stick you in my basement, or something. I don't even have a basement, actually." He rambled, wanting to make it clear that he had no malicious intentions.

"Oh. That's cool, I guess," Bailey acknowledged. He wasn't actually super interested in how she'd come to be the guidance counsellor, he realized. Sure, he'd been the one that had asked, but it had really been mor out of courtesy than anything else. He was far more interested in other things, like how she'd interacted with people, or found out about her abilities, or how many other adapteds she knew.
So, rather than wasting any time pretending to be interested in other things (and potentially lose his train of thought), Bailey dove right into the important stuff. He wiggled a bit in his chair as he prepared to spew out another string of words. "So, like, when'd you find out that you were an adapted? How? And do you meet lots of other adapteds? What are they like? What's an aura? Can we do other things? Do people get mad at you a lot for taking away their powers? People usually either get really mad or really like me because of it."
He finally took a breath after his last question for that moment and then glanced at the coffee maker. It smelled darn good.

"Yeah," Bailey nodded, puffing out his chest as he feigned bravery. He definitely hadn't seen that the effects were fake, but he could definitely pretend.
The movie moved along at a usual pace, becoming more and more like a usual cliché horror movie with every scene. Bailey watched it with a yawn, bored with the premise. The reviews had been right; it was a bit of a waste of money.
Somewhere near the end of the movie, he placed his feet up on the seat in front of him. His legs were starting to fall asleep, and it was way more comfortable to sit like that than with them flat on the floor. Unfortunately, he didn't really watch where he was putting his feet, and ended up kicking the woman in front of him in the head.
"That is it!" She shouted and put her popcorn down on the floor in front of her. "I've put up with talking, laughing, snorting, yawning, and throwing snacks, but I will not put up with being kicked in the head. If you two don't leave, I'm going to talk to someone who will make you leave."
The woman was clearly fuming. She had gotten out of her seat to turn around and face the two teens. The rest of the theatre had turned to look at the scene, finding it far more interesting than the movie.

>>"I also have hot chocolate. or... coffee."
"Hot chocolate!" Bailey said excitedly. That sounded way better than tea. Way, way better. Who needed leaf water when you could have hot sugar and cocoa? "Could we, like, mix coffee and hot chocolate? Like a mocha? That sounds even better." Coffee was alright on its own, but it was great mixed with hot chocolate. Caffeine and sugar? Bailey was there.
>>"So, you are an adapted?"
"Yep!" Bailey nodded. He definitely was. Unless it was some sort of weird reverse mutation like he had initially thought. He'd yet to get that checked out. "Adapted I am. An X-man told me a little while back. Masochist. The internet says that his name is Saphirus, though. That's where I get most of my information, actually. Internet sites. Audobon X is pretty cool."
He sat back in the chair and looked around the office. He assumed that she was probably pretty busy. She was the guidance counsellor at a school full of hormonal mutants, after all. She probably spent a lot of time in that office. "So how'd you end up at a school for mutants?"

Bailey snorted at the image of sparkling vampires. It was true; Twilight had ruined vampires for most people. They had been so great when they were evil and scared of garlic and just wanted to suck peoples' blood. Darn Twilight. He and his brothers had spent an entire night watching the entire series one time. Most of it had been spent making fun of the acting and dialogue, and then some of it had been spent consoling Bailey's youngest brother. Apparently he had actually enjoyed the movies.
He pushed aside the thought about how much he missed his youngest brother and tried to focus on the topic at hand. "And werewolves too. Now they're all attractive and stuff. They were supposed to be scary!" Bailey added.
He forced his eyes to look back at the screen where there was a man covered in blood and other gory effects. He snorted aloud. "That looks so fake," he announced. It didn't really, but he liked to pretend that he could see stuff that other people couldn't. It also made the movie way less scary.
The teen received a few glares from the people around him, but he ignored them. He wasn't about to let a few other people cramp his style.
The movie moved forward, blissfully unaware of the fact that it wasn't scaring Bailey. The next scene showed an actually rather scary villain approaching the man, primed to finish him off.

>>"I can give it a try."
"Sweet, thanks!" Bailey grinned. Trying was all he wanted, really. Actually, he mostly just wanted to talk to someone who knew what he was going through. Someone who wasn't a mutant freaking out about having their powers taken away.
>>"Would you like some tea?"
As he stepped into the office, he paused for a second. He didn't actually like tea very much, but it seemed rude to say no, so he nodded. "Sure, thank you," he said. He could choke down some warm leaf water, right?
"I'm Bailey," he announced after she asked. He had, for the umpteenth time, talked about something random before giving a stranger his name. He seemed to do that constantly. "You're Gemma, right? That's what the door said, anyway. Er, I guess I should probably call you Ms. Taylor, shouldn't I? Ms. or Mrs.?"
He stepped all the way into the woman's office and took a seat in a chair across from the one that she obviously used. He very nearly put his feet onto the desk, but realized that that would be crossing a line. He'd done enough of that for one lifetime already.

The guidance counsellor woman was very tall. Taller than Bailey. She looked rather athletic, too. In fact, she didn't really look as though she had any place sitting in a room all day dealing with students. At first glance, she actually looked rather unapproachable.
That was, until she smiled. She had a very friendly smile that told Bailey that it was alright to talk to her. So, talk to her he did.
"Uh no, not exactly. I'm not actually a mutant, you see, so I couldn't really be a student. Anyway, this guy - sometimes girl - Mirror brought me here. I've never met another adapted before - that's what I am, an adapted - so he brought me here and said that you could explain some things to me. Like why we can do stuff, and how we can do stuff, and why it only works at a certain distance. That kinda thing."
He finally took a breath after his usual amount of word vomit. "So... would you do that?" He asked with rather large eyes.
