The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Finally getting some air in her lungs, Ranger looked up to see Lee standing there, head tilted asking if Ranger was done.
Ranger held up a finger, the universal symbol to wait one as she took a few more breaths. ”No… No. I, uh—I.” Ranger scratched the back of her head. She was about to say she’s not used to her body and got herself in a bad situation where she had lost her wind. ”Y’ probably noticed I have a power, as I noticed y’ had… One too.” Ranger was still steadying her breathing, but stood up while calming it. ”I don’t have control of it. It does what it wants, I’m jus’ along f’r the ride. Often my body idn’t what I’m used t’.”
The muscles that had warped their shape and structure had worked their way back to their normal configuration as the intensity of the fight had ended. ”Okay. Y’ won that round. Again?”
The first elbow missed, that was fine. The second elbow spun around with much greater speed and force. Only for it to be grabbed and the momentum to be redirected over Lee as the woman bent.
For the second time in not even so many minutes, Ranger was flipped over and dropped onto the mat. This second time, Ranger wasn’t as prepared and the hit with the ground knocked the wind out of her. Her eyes bugged out for a moment as she tried and momentarily failed to pull in a breath.
At the same time, Ranger forced herself to sit up and pushed herself back with her feet while leaning forward to help catch a breath. She could move fast, but speed didn't help you catch a breath.
”Manpower an’ determination. With enough of both, almost anythin’ is possible.” Ranger said matter of factly. ”It doesn’t matter how good y’ are if the one after y’ has enough resources. They have the element of surprise an’ y’ jus’ have t’ slip up once.” Ranger had come to terms with the loss of time. He had all the advantages of things his old life had done—created a business and built up some wealth—while also having his youth.
Quin wanted to learn more. Ranger found that commendable. Ultimately everyone was responsible for themselves and knowing how best to crack a few skulls to keep yourself safe was a great last resort to have. ”I teach here every so often, when I have time. I run the company that provides security here. I’m a fed at my day job though. Keeps me a little busier than I’d like, but hey, keeps the skills sharp.” Ranger spoek as he walked over to the bag he had tossed at the start of class. He bent over and fished inside a side pocket for a card. ”Y’ can always reach out t’ me. Schedule trainin’ here ‘r at Blackforest Tactical if y’ find y’rself in Brooklyn.” Ranger handed over his card. It had his name, Michael Hunter, and multiple phone numbers. One for his office at SUPER and another for BlacTac.
Lee was moving. Fast. Giving Ranger a less than adequate amount of time to recover, she was pressing the offensive. If Ranger wasn’t on the receiving end, she would be impressed.
A right to the face. Ranger twisted her body and watched the arm sail by.
A left right to her body, Ranger bounced from foot to foot. She had the footing to move but was not in a good position to counter or stop the blows.
With each attack Lee sent, Ranger moved faster. Her power dumping energy into her ability to move faster. The physical structure of her muscles changed as seen from the outside. Almost as if they were streamlining. Reshaping to be as efficient as possible for quick movement.
When the final kick came. Ranger planted one foot and kicked with the other to block with her shin before, snapping from her hip to bring her elbow on the same side in for a strike the rotating all the way around to strike with the other elbow.
It was an interesting question. Was Quin as good as everyone tries to tell her she was. Ranger shrugged, ”At policework? Maybe. My experience was y’ dealin’ with messes I left.” Ranger smiled, remembering when they met. He’d headshot a man who had taken a woman hostage while Quin had held down a second perp that had been disarmed. Ranger took advantage of the situation and left, his good deed done for the day. ” At fightin’? Not bad, but needed work. Y’ were good at aikido, but the style still has the same flaws t’day as it did then.”
”No.” Ranger answered Quin’s second question. ”At least mine never have. I happened t’ fall back int’ some similar life situations as my pre-de-aged self. With the same woman an’ own the same company. So I managed t’ pick up my life pretty well, but I had just met Noel in my subjective time before we woke up together deaged. I’d recently opened the doors t’ my PMC. Woke up an’ it’s now a pretty big deal. I’ve had t’ piece my lost life t’gether an’ make it work.”
The elbow connected. Ranger shifted her focus to maintaining her footing as she stopped her movement. That was a mistake. Lee grabbed Ranger’s arm and as she went back, planted her foot on Ranger’s chest.
With an ”Oof.” Ranger slammed into the mat on the other side of Lee. It was a good thing it was a mat and not concrete as Ranger’s head slammed into the ground after her back.
Her vision swimming a little, Ranger rolled over and launched herself back to her feet before stumbling back a step. From there she anchored herself. Her breath grew heavier as her power enhanced her ability to pull in oxygen.
Ranger wasn’t sure how to answer Quin’s question. He could answer it, but with an answer that was satisfactory enough if not the whole answer. Much of the information was classified.
”I lost years. Woke up one day thinkin’ it was still the early 2010s but it was far from that. I have no memories of what happened durin’ the time between. We’d met an’ interacted some not long before I found myself in my subjective future. Y’ were a detective an’ everytime we met I was a thorn in y’r side.”
Ranger left out how the deaging was planned and was part of a conspiracy to rope Ranger into working for the dark side of SUPER.
”I had notes from workin’ as head of security at Haven an’ my now wife’s journals t’ piece everythin’ else together with. Like how I beat y’r ass in a dojo around 2017.” Ranger said with a smile
Ranger was still looking confused at her hand when she saw Lee closing in from the corner of her eye. With very little time to react, Ranger dodged the jab. The move was fast, faster than she had moved before. Lee had begun to move faster so Ranger’s power pushed even greater speed. Lee must be a mutant, but Ranger was too busy to contemplate the issue.
The low kick came before Ranger had fully recovered from the dodge. Leaning into the momentum of the dodge to the side, Ranger performed a one hand cartwheel. Well, two hands, but only one at a time. They switched to avoid the kick.
Coming out of the cartwheel, Ranger carried the momentum forward and threw an elbow at Lee on the way back up to her feet.
Quin’s other things was a question about what to do if someone grabs your hair. The way she posed it has Ranger suspecting that it has happened to her. Recently. Lucky for Quin, it was something Ranger knew from experience but just in theory.
”There's several ways, but they all jus’ about start the same.” Ranger reached up and grabbed his own hair. And pulled a few times as he spoke. ” When they have y’r hair, pullin’ is where it hurts. Step one is stoppin’ ‘em from scalpin’ y'all. Grab the hand an’ hold it has tight t’ year head as possible. Both hands. If y’r connected an’ holdin’ it tight, they can't hurt y'all no matter how much they throw y'all around” ranger let go of his hair. ”Step two, y’ lean t’ they're center line. Left hand has y’, lean left. Lean way over, force ‘em t’ lean an’ lock out they're shoulder. From there, y'all know aikido. Joint lock them int’ oblivion.”
Ranger spoke with the distant stare have movements of someone working through a memory. He was not describing something he had come up with in the moment to manage that exact situation.
Then Quin asked for Ranger's name, ”I'm Michael Hunter. Sorry if I spooked y'all earlier… I take it like me y’ got deaged? Woke up one day, everybody Knowin' this older you that y' ain't.”
Ranger’s leg sailed through where Lee had been. There was a small hitch in his Ranger landed and shifted her weight to stop the spin. She wasn't used to landing from a spin with that particular set of hips
Spinning around to face Lee, Ranger’s arm shot up. Ranger stopped moving and looked at her own arm that had placed itself perfectly in place to stop Lee’s right hook. The arm had moved into the perfect spot in space with an absurd speed.
That had been happening a lot lately.
Immediately after, Ranger backpedaled a couple steps. She looked at her arm and flexed her hand. She had control, even if it has seemed to move on it's own.
Once Ranger had created distance by shoving Lee back, she spread her legs and rolled to the side. From there she pinwheeled her legs and shoved herself off the ground, the rotational force bringing her back to her feet with a starfish kip-up.
Not wanting to waste the momentum, Ranger rotated her foot and carried the energy forward as her power snapped to the use, granting an inhuman level of speed.. A roundhouse kick with her leg up high, a full rotation, a jump toward Lee, and her foot came around again as she had a moment where her body was above her head wind whistling from the air violently split by her leg. A corkscrew kick.
Quin did as instructed and attacked. It was by no means polished, and had Ranger been working against her it would have failed. The idea was to have her attempt the move and if it worked it worked. Quin could practice and refine later, but for then Ranger wanted to introduce the move and give her some confidence.
So Ranger went down. A small ”Ugh.” when he hit the ground. Followed by, ”Good—Ah… Tap.Tap tap!” Ranger said tapping the ground with a hand as Quin successfully put a world of pain into his knee.
After Quin released Ranger’s leg and the pair untangled themselves Ranger said, ”That was great. A little rough, but y’ got the idea down. Y’ll jus’ need t’ refine it.” Then once he had stood up Ranger looked around the room. People had started to leave. Ranger checked the clock on the wall, it was about that time.
Before Ranger could call the session, Quin said that there was one more thing. Ranger looked back to her and asked, ”I don’t’ve anywhere t’ be. Shoot,...” Ranger cut himself off before he said Quin’s name again.
They went down and Ranger pulled guard. Her ankles locked together behind Lee’s back. Lee planted her hands on Ranger’s arms near Ranger’s shoulders and tried to push herself up. Ranger didn’t have good movement of her arms and decided it would likely be easier to break guard to get back into the fight.
When Lee tried to push herself to her knees, Ranger unlocked her ankles and brought her knees in toward her chest using the distance Lee was creating. Ranger grabbed Lee’s arms near where they grabbed Ranger’s shoulders and used them as an anchor when she rolled her back to bring her knees toward her face like she was about to perform a kip-up. From there she tried to plant her knees on Lee and shove.
Ranger had speed on her side, not strength in her female form, but even with unempowered strength her legs were mighty.
The move connected. Everything was going well, Lee had been unbalanced, but she had snatched Ranger’s arm and used that to buy her enough leverage to shift weight and then redirect the momentum on her kicked leg to put it between Ranger’s.
Lee’s kick to Ranger’s planted leg, coupled with a push, Ranger’s left arm shot forward, guided unconsciously by Ranger’s power, to grab the back of Lee’s neck and pull her with Ranger as Ranger went to the ground to take guard. Her back against the ground and her legs wrapped around Lee. She could hold Lee close to limit the power behind a punch or use the positioning to go for a submission.
Lee was moving cautiously. That was fine. Ranger was used to being on the offensive. A hand to hand fight often was like a firefight. Momentum and aggression were often keys to victory. Ranger knew she needed to not get into a situation where her power wanted to switch. It would be awkward for everyone involved for Ranger to suddenly be a male again while fighting Lee.
That meant while being aggressive, Ranger had to be smart. Not get herself trapped ina situation where she needed her enhanced strength or defenses.
So speed and intensity were the game plan. Opening with a simple Muay Thai move. Ranger closed distance and jumped her weight from the back leg (her her right) to the front (her left), her left foot twisting perpendicular to Lee’s and her right leg swung around to hook her ankle around Lee’s leg. At the same time she swung her right arm around to push the right side of Lee’s face. The arm first shooting corss body so it could rotate back toward Lee. An outside lead leg sweep. Classic Muay Thai.
