The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

She raised an eyebrow at Skye and her lips teased a smile "Oh, and what is it exactly that it means?" Her smirk widened. "Although, I'd probably pick up on what it means being around you long enough anyway." changing the subject a little Emily felt a little candid for a moment. "I've actually been nerding out a little bit... If that makes any sense, just because it's so interesting to see a different representation of a person's emotions." Emily really wasn't that fussed about appearance when it came to impressions with people but she couldn't help but feel something about Skye's power made her much more interesting.
"Well duh." As if it was such a completely obvious thing. Emily fancied herself as a bit of a people expert, and understood that they were pretty complex but still, you couldn't dwell on the people not super interested in you. If she did that, a lot of time would be spent brooding or moody. Well... More time anyway. "I usually am."
Emily enjoyed watching people being pensive, actually considering things. It was both a little bit ego driven, she enjoyed knowing that her input was valued and that it was effecting people's cognitive process, and their emotions, and also that it was just that people were very interesting.
She was still very much buzzing on the energy in the room even though it was just the two of them. Weird how that worked sometimes.

Emily narrowed eyes with the other girl. "Yes, cackling. What else would I have been doing?" The pho-glare increased. Puns. Puns were the lowest form of humour. "That's the best you could come up with, really? Tickled pink." She snorted derisively.
"Those people are lame." Most people were lame. "I mean, as long as you're not going around blinding two thirds of the people you meet I do find it odd that more people aren't interested in you." Although she did admit that initially she didn't want to be disturbed by Skye, that was more an Emily problem than anything that was wrong with Skye.
"Yeah, a lot of my friends are very casual as I said, the ones that aren't tended to fall out of touch." Which she guessed made them casual friends, but she'd thought she'd had a better read on some of them as people.
She studied Skye as her emotions shifted again and nodded gently. "I don't really look at it so much as self improvement as self appreciation."
After a few more moments of pondering Emily's own situation she decided that it was probably a combination of her mildly abrasive personality and people being weirded out that their feelings weren't private around her. So much shame from some people...
"Besides, if people were put off by your powers, or weren't interested in pursuing anything further you're probably better off without them." That was maybe a little more of her own cynicism and a little projecting, but nobody was perfect.

It felt good to predict behaviour accurately, even if Emily had been a little unusually nervous about bringing up her power to Skye. She supposed if the situation were reversed she'd probably have a similar reaction. People that knew Skye could probably read her emotions just based on looking at her anyway, so Emily guessed that she was used to it. It'd be nice to spend some time with a person not reading into or even mildly irritated with Emily having an inkling of what was going on inside their head.
Pfft. "I like to think some of it has to do with my insightful, awesome personality personally." Maybe it was mostly her power. Yeah, okay so she did suck around adapteds. Okay it was just her power.
"Yeeeeup. I've kind of been internally cackling over the coincidence the entire time." Cackling, not giggling. It was maniacal. For sure.
"Likewise, you're alright." She teased. "Oh really? You seem like you'd traditionally be very sociable to me. You're a very vibrant person."

Emily brushed past those old thoughts and smiled to herself, it sort of felt like she'd been closed off to people for a while, and there was something wrong with that picture. Maybe it wasn't just Skye that was being an broody angsty brooder. Although Emily was going to avoid another situation like that last one like the plague, she really ought to open herself up a bit more to people that she could trust, she figured she could with Skye, more or less at the very least.
"Hah, you're pretty much an open book to me." She wasn't 100% certain on how Skye would react by any means, but she was pretty sure that she wouldn't hate or ridicule Emily for being an empath and not advertising it. "I cheat, I'm an empath. But you do bring a new meaning to wearing your heart on your sleeve, in my defence." She admitted.
"You know what?.." Another grin, she was smiling an unusual amount. God she was such a little edgy teenager, she'd never really grown out of that phase apparently. Self reflection was lame. "I think it has been for me too. I've not really done much actual hanging out, or made friends beyond very casual for at least a couple years."
Looking pensive for a moment. "I think hanging out will be good for both of us."

Emily could understand that. She had about 20 different coping mechanisms for the various issues she ran into in life, and sometimes felt like she was just rapidly cycling through them during the day, going from one to another until something started working and she got a little relief. It dawned on her that although the caffeine was preventing her from feeling too dopey, her headache was gone.
Actually, she felt kind of... energised. She shifted in the seat again gazing into the ceiling for a few moments, enjoying the ambient glow a lot. Before sitting up quickly and straightening out, turning to flash another smile at Skye.
"Well luckily for you I have some experience in the field, which I really don't care to repeat." Depending on another person for your happiness was... Well it was messy, especially if they weren't wholly stable themselves. Emily hadn't thought about Kendra in a while, but on this particular occasion it didn't actually bother her too much. She'd found herself a... friend? She hoped they were friends, which sounded kind of cheesy in her head, but she actually didn't have too many of them and if her previous drama helped her get Skye to improve her outlook, maybe it was a good thing it happened.
"I'm glad. I've literally just met you and I can already tell you that this is much more your style than moping." She teased. "Yeah, I am pretty spectacular aren't I?"

She didn't think she would be surprised, Emily had lived around here for ages at this point and she regularly saw people with those physical mutations like extra limbs or skin tone or whatever, and she did definitely get used to them but Skye was flashier than most people she met. It was funny that her personality suited her power so well. Emily smiled a little inwardly at the thought.
She'd heard people bringing up the idea that powers were suited to the person but she really didn't feel like she suited empathy, she was always complaining about it and resulted in killer headaches.
"I guess you're right, it could be kind of fun..." What colour should she even dye her hair? She was leaning towards purples a little bit. Maybe she could just start with something like some highlights?
Blushing a little more earnestly she shook her head a little. "I wouldn't go that far, I just had encouragement and it's a good hobby for taking my mind off of things around me. I prefer to game but doing that doesn't really work all the time.." Emotions tended to mess that up more than art, maybe it was something about creativity. The blush was mostly because she knew the other girl was sincere about her compliment. Funny how that worked.
A sly grin spread across her lips. "Oh my, I take it back. that is your colour." A little shiver ran up her back, she really enjoyed being around this one in particular. "Now that's not very common" She mused thinking about it. "It's not quite excitement? Resolve? Determination?" Her lips twisted into a pretty wide grin. "It's pretty." She wasn't even looking at Skye, referring to the emotion rather than the colour it caused.

"Skye, I don't think you need to worry about that, your hair and light draws much more attention than your sleepwear~" She teased. Emily had actually heard a few comments here and there about Skye, but she'd never met her before tonight or actually put the rumours to a person. When you worked around Gemma you tended to pick up a little mansion gossip here and there, which she really didn't mind too much.
"I suppose there isn't anything wrong with that." Emily glanced down at her own clothes and feigned a grimace before smirking. "I don't think my style has changed since I was approximately 14 years old. Cool never goes out of style, clearly."
The compliment drew a small blush out of the Brit and she took back the pad a little sheepishly. "Thanks. I've been playing a game with my dad a little online the last few months and it sort of inspired it." She shifted in her position a little before picking up her sketch pad and stepping off the beanbag, perching cross legged on an actual sofa, a little closer to Skye.

Emily's feelings on her power and guilt were... Complex. On one hand she did sometimes feel like she was invading other's privacy and she'd once been mortified at her mother turning her room upside down after a spat and invading her privacy looking for non existent things. But on the other, it wasn't like she could help it! Why should she have to apologise for having a different sense others didn't.
Should someone with good eyesight apologise to people that had to wear glasses? Most people could work out feelings if they just put some work in... She just had a bit of an edge on most of them.
Emily glanced down again, a little sheepishly. "Yes, I understand."
Another playful smile tugged at her lips. "I suppose that's fair, your pyjama taste doesn't absolutely blow~"
Considering the whole style thing was always odd. Emily didn't really dress to impress others. She always had kind of done her own thing, and to be fair did have a couple of hang ups but most of them were related to familial opinions. Okay, so she did wear makeup but just because she wasn't too fashion concerned didn't mean that she was a crazy person.
"Maybe wait discover what kind of person you really are, then change into a style that you feel comfortable in." She paused, thinking over her next comment. "I think that given your situation you should worry most about making yourself feel comfortable, if your appearance bothers you change it into something that makes you smile when you look in the mirror. Honestly, the happiest people in the world are the ones that learn to love themselves first."
She was leaning a little towards Skye's side of the room now. "Trust me, I know what I'm talking about." she added with sincerity.
Why didn't she just tell Skye what her power was? It wasn't like she was the sort to judge her, and Skye almost literally wore her emotions on her sleeve already. How did she bring it up now though? And how did she excuse the covering it up?
Instead she cleared her throat and held out a sketch of a creature for Skye to examine "What do you think?"

It really was a super awesome feeling to pick up on others enjoying your company. As much as Emily might have bitched and moaned on the topic of her side effects, she did love parts of her power. Hell, she loved most of it almost all of the time, it was just the damn headaches.
"Well I'm glad it doesn't happen that long, I can certainly imagine it being a touch mortifying when it happens." It could always be worse, Emily could have a power that could directly embarrass her. Most of the time she just avoided those situations and topics.
"Don't worry if you're with me, we can avoid stressful areas before we get to them." It was actually really funny that the two of them had met, Emily was probably the idea person to take Skye out to have some fun, she could pick up on the girl's mood turning and attempt to keep her in a good way, or at least steer her away from those situations, failing even that she could move to Skye away from other people before she blinded them.
Really, an adapted might be better... Emily liked being around adapted individuals because of the lack of headaches. Although... They probably wouldn't have any idea of what was going on internally with Skye, so maybe she would be a good fit. It was sort of what nudged her towards counselling as a possible profession in the first place, she had insight that others just did not.
Another snort. "Why do you think I'm dressed in my awesome stylish clothes nerd attire?~" She put her pencil down and gazed at the sketch before turning back to Skye with a sly grin. "I figured I'd limit other student's exposure to my not so stylish Pjamas if I was going to be up this late 4 nights a week."

Emily was taking regularly little pauses in thought to absentmindedly add to her sketch. She'd discovered a while ago that her art turned out much better when she stayed out of her own head and focused on something else. Whether that was a person, music or a movie turned on the background didn't really seem to matter too much, it gave better results.
Funny, Emily really hadn't expected to want to be friends with this person when she walked in here, but something about her personality and her emotional wavelength (So to speak) made being around her extremely stimulating.
She felt comfortable as the interaction went on. "I'm pretty good at reading situations on all sides, hair colour or no I'd know when to duck." She hesitated before deciding not to say anything too specific. "Hopefully that's not going to happen to you too much if we hang out though, I like to think I'm alright at picking situations that aren't super high stress."
After a beat or two she smirked. "And the ones that are are the fun kind of stress, like karaoke."

Emily wasn't usually at those types of parties, there was often drinking sure, but it was more games and movies, or a swimming pool or something involved. And she often left when the vibe turned towards the sort of thing Skye was suggesting. Though she supposed she could see what it was like, nothing ventured nothing gained and all that.
"I do enjoy a fun party, as long as it's a good vibe and not filled with creeps." She admitted, some people could just be gross with all the manipulation and whatnot.
In theory she supposed if Skye was just looking for a hookup, shudder, she could help point her in the direction of one of the slightly less 'ew' people in the room. That seemed sensible-ish.
She smiled more awkwardly than before. "I'm sure you look good in lots of colours." Emily could definitely appreciate visual appeal, and fashion at times but she liked to think that attraction was less superficial than that.
Emily took a few moments to process, then took a deeper breath and turned back to face Skye directly. "If you're heading in that direction, and I'm nearby I'll distract you, alright?" She smiled at the little afterthought. "I'm glad, they're actually really cool."

Ah, that made sense. Emily was wondering how bright it got until Skye mentioned the flash grenade thing. Not that she'd ever been around a flash grenade when one had gone off. But she imagined it was pretty bright and intense given that they were used to stun people. She couldn't imagine a scenario when she'd be around something like that.
"College parties are a mixed experience. Maybe you're just not going to the right kind." She'd actually not been to any recently. "Actually I don't think I've been to many this year, I've kind of kept to myself a bit more than usual." Maybe that was was why her power was bothering her so much, she hadn't been giving herself exposure much recently, more than absolutely necessary at least.
Emily giggled when she felt the subtle shift that coincided completely with Skye's hair shifting colour again. It was the girly-est sound to come out of her lips in probably weeks. The orange light was really cool, Emily felt warm too, though that was most likely because Sky was feeling happy. "Orange suits you." She decided.
"Honestly it's not even so much an appearance thing, happiness suits you." She grinned. "I have decided, therefore it is."

An odd thought struck her. "Does intensity effect them?" She wondered if it was all uniform, or if different shades of colours were dictated by intensity of emotions. Emily didn't think she'd actually ever met another person with an emotion orientated power, and this was as a result very intriguing to her, and also relate able in some ways.
Emily thought back to the last rave-esk party she was at and smiled, leaning her head back on the beanbag a little. "I'll bet. Those parties can be quite something, provided they have the right crowd." Parties were definitely a mixed bag, but a good one could be very memorable. Emily had specifically avoided any horror themed parties for very good reason.
With a mental shudder she was once again thankful that October had come and gone.
A bright smile blossomed on Emily's lips. "I'm glad, though I'd be even happier if you had a little bit more of that bright orange." She supplied. Joy was the absolute best.

Emily nodded. It would probably be pretty fun for Skye to do that, and also it'd be good to spend more time with her, if anything it might give Emily more practice at controlling herself around particularly strong emotions. She did wonder if Skye was always like this, but that was a question for later.
Her lips quirked again. "It's not so much that, it's just the environment." Emily looked down at her drawing and carried on adding to it almost unconsciously for a good second before forcing herself to look back up. Feeling a little frustrated.
It was Skye's next mood shift that shook her out of it. Emily started suddenly and her gaze flickered over to Skye with a mischievous smirk. "So embarrassment mixed with some happiness then?~" She teased.
"And when you're up this late as often as I am it's as much a habit as a necessity, at least I can still be productive while I'm miserable~" She chirped, sprinkling in some classic British humour.
"I'm sorry." She listened to the full explanation and then started a response before pausing, thinking a little more and adding. "I understand, it can be hard sometimes when you're in a state like that." She paused again. "Maybe you just need to try some new things and hang out with some new people, associate fun with different experiences, rather than just the ones you're dwelling on. It's basic conditioning."
Emily's cheeks actually reddened a little at the realisation of what she said. "Sorry, my Psyche is showing. I'll put that away shamefully."

Emily liked Gemma, or at least she thought she did. The trouble was she relied so heavily on her power as a cheat card for navigating conversation and people's personalities that when she was without it everything got muddled and confused. She was genuinely impressed she'd not made a serious fool of herself in front of her boss yet.
Surprising how much a person could learn to rely on something in 3 years that she hadn't used for at least 16 years of her life. She blinked and turned back to Gemma. "Oh! Of course, what is it?" Was that too eager? A little internal scream went off in her brain.
She quickly took the seat offered to her and tried to settle her nerves. It didn't work, dammit.
Emily actually opened her mouth a couple of times to respond before actual words formed. "I- Uh- Well- Y-" She closed her eyes for half a second to gather a few thoughts. "I think so." More internal screaming... "Honestly? I've had very little ideas of what to do with my life, and the few times I've spent with people in a one on one, or socially intimate situation I've discovered that helping people deal with things, or really vent or work through something is... Valuable."
What did she actually think? Was this a test, or was Gemma just trying to get a read on her?
