The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It was a sunny day, chasing the clouds away. Too bad the air wasn't sweet, and the music was loud. Why was the music so loud in the peaceful quiet of central park, Lenna wondered. She snapped the book she was reading shut, and rose from the park bench to look around for the source. Call her an old biddie, call her bad names, Lenna, but Lenna had not come to the park looking for music with mass appeal. She'd come looking for a sunny park bench to read a good book in.
She had found that very place, and at the same time, she'd found something she hadn't been looking for. A flash of annoyance hit her, and a headache hinted like storm clouds on the horizon. Lenna took a calming breath, and steadied herself. She had to find her focus, and chill. Getting furious over something like that really wasn't cool. Lenna counted backwards, from 10 to 1, and relaxed.
Okay. Better.
Her eyes trailed over the grounds of the park, looking calmly for the source. Now she was curious. What could have brought her blood to a boil so easily...?
She found it. She also found Aura next to it. But what was It? It certainly didn't look human. Lenna shrugged off the thought. If she was playing a supporter of the pro-mutant cause for the people she worked with, the least she could do was fake a fair opinion of whatever chromed compatriot Aura was talking to up ahead. Lenna put on an even smile, and approached the two, keeping a fair distance of six feet from the mysterious machine.
"Hey, Aura. Who is your friend?" Lenna asked. She held up the book in front of her, eyes skimming the pages of the book distractedly as she talked. The book's cover read 'Dresden' Somethingorother. Her hand blocked the rest of the title. Lenna glanced up for a second to make one addition to her questionnaire. "And what are you wearing?"
"I'd like to try and practice controlling my ability," Lenna replied seriously. "If it's even possible."
It wouldn't be. She knew her aura's limits. A five foot radius was her maximum. As far as she knew, that wouldn't change.
But why she had come to his training dojo hadn't been to learn ability control. It hadn't even been meditation. She wished to know more about Hunter. According to Noin Mortman's reports, he seemed a far different man than the one who currently sat before her. Maybe she'd glean something of what caused this transformation in his teachings on mutation control.
Apparently, she was fine... and her name was Ahorta. It was a unique name. She seemed like a unique person. A unique person that didn't really want to play darts any more, and passed her chance away.
Well, whatever. She still seemed a bit strange to Lenna. The woman's mutation must've been heavily affected by her aura. Poor girl.
Would she notice it when she left? Would anyone care?
Lenna's attention swung to the Deirdra woman's dart throw. She hit dead-center. Lenna smiled at her. While dead center was good, it still wasn't going to bring about the top score one could get. The woman held the dart out for the next challenger. Lenna waited a moment, then took it. She got into position, then threw. The dart struck the bull's eye straight in the iris.
She smiled. While it wouldn't get the highest possible score for her, who cared? It was more fun when she beat others by just a few points.
Lenna retrieved the dart. When she returned, she offered it to 'Ahorta'.
He turned the tour over to her. Said he was a newbie. Little did Tony know Lenna was also new to the Sanctuary. She'd been given the Mars tour, so she knew where the cafeteria was. She could piece together the living areas. Was there a recreational area, too? It'd be good if Tony wanted to see the other residents of the Sanctuary. She'd start with what she knew.
"I guess first up, I'll show you that dining hall." Lenna said. She nodded to Lisa, then started walking. "Follow me."
A short while later, they arrived in the dining hall. There were tables set out for mutants to eat at. Mutants of all walks of life milled about, lined up in front of the cafeteria-styled food line and at tables. Of note was the absence of food trays behind the glass of the cafeteria's mess line. The head chef, Cornelius, had no need of serving trays. With a nose wiggle and a wink, he could summon anything your pretty little heart desired, exactly as you desired it, down to the finest detail.
"Cornelius is very special," Lenna smiled, regaling Tony with that very fact. She explained what he could do, though not how he did it. He was a mutant, obviously. It was as simple as that. "Would you like something, before we head to the recreation room? A cup of coffee, perhaps?" It looked like the line wasn't too long. Only one or two mutants stood in wait.
Another good plan, Lenna noted. Michael was on a roll.
The door was the same color as the wall, but looking now, it was obvious it was the security room. It'd make sense the room would be on the ground floor. They'd want to be close to the entrances, so they could respond fast.
Lenna moved into place, slid the card, and opened the door. When it opened, the Ranger moved. She came in after her, and turned her attention to the computer. Lenna slipped into the computer chair, and moved the mouse. They'd have to move quickly. She checked the security logs from the entrance, and the cameras facing the street outside, starting from the time when the crash had been reported, onwards. She fast-forwarded through footage. Eventually, she came to something. Big Red and Michael's body, exiting the building. She watched which way they went.
Her eyes swung to the blond, checking to see she'd caught the same information. "Got it?" She asked. "After we're done with this, we may as well fry the computer and erase all the footage of the last few days..."
Gentleness, health, tranquility, understanding... he was really selling the self-help swami show. Maybe he wasn't trying anything underhanded with this reappearance of his? Lenna followed his suggestions silently, concentrating on those thoughts, rather than her own. She breathed, and meditated on all of the aforementioned.
In, out, In, out. This was getting repititive. She tried to imagine her restlessness leaving her, tried to imagine calmness replacing it. Patience, understanding... all that jazz. She gave him a dozen cycles, focusing on the process and meditative efforts, just like Hunter wanted, silently hoping for something more to come from her efforts.
A guard. The ranger wanted her to pickpocket a guard? For a second, Lenna wanted to ask if the blond could snag the key with her magnetic personality... but no. If it was a keycard, the strong magnetism would likely erase key data. They'd get nothing good from that. It wouldn't even get pulled.
Michael was planning a distraction. Lenna nodded. "Works for me." She could work with anything. What was the distraction, though? It didn't take long for her to find out.
The chandelier's restraints gave way... as did the strength of one man's ankle. It all happened quickly, so Lenna moved fast. As people arrived to check on the disturbance, she moved towards the rabble. Her eyes locked on a security guard as he made his way to the scene of the crime. Lenna acted dumb, making noise, calls of 'what happened!?' 'Guard?!' She tripped over something invisible as she rushed towards him, sending them both toppling to the floor. A hand was braced against his chest as they fell. The other darted to his pocket for the card. Her body pressed up against his was more than enough distraction for him to miss the theft.
"I'm sorry," She apologized. Lenna wore a look of shock, embarrassment, worry, as she helped him back to his feet. The card slipped stealthily into her back pocket as they moved. "Are you okay?"
He gruffly pushed her away. His focus was on the chandelier and the man with the problem. A hand went to the radio at his side. "I'm going to need an ambulance here. Injured man, mid-thirties, from the way he's holding himself, looks like a broken leg..."
He was wrong. That didn't matter. Lenna made like a ninja, and vanished into the crowd. She found the Ranger a few minutes later, wearing a small smile on her face. "Got it. I trust you know where we're headed?" She hoped he knew where the security station was. That was their next stop.
>> " Golden arches? They got a Mickey D's in there or what?"
Lenna smiled. "Cornelius, our chef, could probably hook you up. He got Mars McNuggets, on-demand." That mutant could probably summon up any given food you requested. The food was real, too, not mutant-generated or vat-grown. That was another point in its favor, when one weakened the powers of the x-gene around one's self.
She led him through the golden doors, into the lobby. Lenna gave a slight nod to Lisa, the secretary. "This is Tony," She told her. "I'm showing him around."
Lisa nodded.
Lenna turned to Tony. "This is Lisa. She's the secretary here. She can help you, if you come here with questions later and I'm not around."
"What sorts of things would you like to see first here, Tony?" Lenna turned back to the man.
The look on the old man's face perfectly spelled out the terror in which he'd now live. Angry mutants attacking his lawn fixtures... that seemed insurance-worthy.
"See? What did I tell you?" Lenna said. "If you had signed up for the insurance, we could have helped you fix that. If you sign up now, we can certainly help with the next one." She held out the clipboard and papers.
Silently and begrudgingly, the man signed.
Lenna smiled. "Good. Have a nice day, then."
With that, she turned and started walking down the street. She kept a fair distance from Aura, so as not to draw conclusions... eventually, after a tiny bit of walking, she was able to rejoin the girl. "And the next one?" She asked.
The racketeering continued on into the evening. Finally, it was time to call it quits. Lenna smiled at Aura. "We did good work today," She said. "Thanks for showing me the ropes."
No need for the 'Mr.' Okay, she got it. Lenna nodded sheepishly in understanding. Mr. Hunter wanted to be informal. She could do that. His lesson plan sounded good.
"Alright," Lenna replied.
She adopted a serious attitude as the lesson began. She sat, eyes closed, and she breathed. Slow and steady, low and calm. Four, four, eight. Four, four, eight. She relaxed, and let her mind focus on what he was teaching. She repeated the process until she found some sort of natural rhythm. Inhale, wait... exhale.
Lenna smiled right back, letting the guy, and shoving him roughly to discuss business with them inside the house. The paperwork didn't take long. One broken end table later, they were done. Lenna especially liked her response to that. It was very classy.
She followed Aura out the door, and on to the next house.
Aura asked if she wanted it. Lenna nodded. "Sure thing."
She approached the house, and knocked on the door. A balding man in his 50s approached the door. He looked like a nice old man, so Lenna smiled her best churchy smile.
"Hello, sir? I'm here selling insurance. Let me ask you, are you new around these here parts?" She asked, holding the paperwork against her chest. The man eyed her, and spoke slowly.
"Indeed, I am, miss?"
"Then, you aren't familiar with the problems in the area." She continued.
"Problems...?"
"There are some violent mutants around the neighborhood," She shaded her eyes from the sun, looking around the block as she spoke. "Bad seeds. They damage property like they think it's their own. Our insurance can help with that. Would you like to hear more?" She asked.
He gave a sluggish nod. He seemed to be hesitant.
Lenna went on. "If you sign up for our monthly mutant insurance policy, we'll cover the fees for any damage your property incurs from mutant attacks. It's a real good deal. I have a policy myself."
"... Mutant insurance... I've never heard of..."
"Would you like to sign up? Our prices are relatively reasonable. And one cannot put a price on safety, right?" She gave a hinting wink, and held out the clipboard.
"... Are you threateni--"
"Nothing of the sort," Lenna smiled. "I'm selling insurance. It's the violent mutants in the area that are threatening..." Right, Aura? Lenna turned, and shaded her eyes again, looking around. "Oh, there's one now!"
((OOC: Aura. After this one, we can probably wrap up the thread by handwaving the rest of the racketeering.))
Lenna smiled at Tony's humor. "Indeed. Retiring early. That'd be nice." She already had funds to live quite a long time without working, thanks to the various cookie jars she had her hand in, so 'retiring early' was actually furthest from her mind. Poker champion, on the other hand... gambling was fun.
The train stopped, and the two got off. "We'll have to hail a cab," Lenna explained. They went topside, and she did. Lenna opened the door for Tony, then let herself in. She gave the driver the address. He seemed somewhat hesitant to drive near the sanctuary, but he obliged.
The taxi started moving. A short while later, it stopped in front of a tall gothic building with big gold doors. Lenna stepped out, and paid the fare. Then, she turned to Tony, gesturing to the building. "The Sanctuary, home to the Golden Arches."
>>"The outdoor cameras might be able t' point us in the next direction. How is your pick pocketin'? These hands have a few maneuverability issues."
Oh, he was good.
Too bad she wasn't. Pickpocketing never had been something she'd done. Card tricks, however... she could be quick with the misdirection. It was worth a shot.
