The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

With anxious eye Juliette watched Atian load his bow. His energy was a bright white light, very different from her own. The bow hummed as his arms started to shake under the strain of his blast. His mutation was impressive, to say the least. After a few moments, he seemed to have built up enough energy to fire at her.
Juliette caught the arrow in one hand as it was fired at her. She closed her eyes as she absorbed the energy - more than a sufficient amount to do more than a few blasts. Her eyes flashed gold as she looked back at Atian with more relaxed expression. She stepped towards the the bot readily, her skin shifting quickly from a tanned caramel colour to a bright yellow-gold glow. Her features became distorted as her body became pure energy. She felt much more alive, more free than she had without it. It had been so long since she had absorbed so much that she had begun to forget what it was like to have it.
"Go from the left," she instructed Atian as she moved to the right. She shot another blast at the bot, this time much bigger and forceful than her previous ones. "Can you hit him with one of those arrows?"
"Is that too tight, Tyson?" Juliette asked cautiously as she noticed him wince. She continued to look over the wound despite his protests. "You'll need to visit a hospital to get this bandaged up."
"Hrrr sorrrrrry if I scarrrrrred you."
Juliette shook her head at him as she looked up. "Don't worry, you didn't," she told him with a smile. She noticed the growl in his voice and his less-than-normal appearance and wondered how often he felt isolated. Even in a mutant cafe, he received some rude stares and glances from the other patrons. Mutations were often difficult to deal with, but Juliette counted herself lucky to have the ability to blend in. She tried not to let her face betray the amount of pity she felt for Tyson as she held pressure on his paw.
"I see much worse all the time." She told him honestly, thinking back to the many shifts she had spent in the E.R.
After a moment or so, she peaked under the napkin to check on the bleeding. To her surprise, it had stopped completely and the wound had even begun to heal. She looked up at him with a quizzical expression. "Do you have a healing factor?"
Juliette's thoughts were intruded by a loud yell coming from beside her. She looked up immediately, trying to find the source of the noise. Her, and most everyone else in the cafe's, eyes fell on the wolf-looking mutant at the table next to her. He had spilled hot tea all over himself and even managed to cut his hand, or paw rather, on the broken shards of the teacup.
The woman closed her computer and tucked it under her arm as she picked her coffee and sat down next to him. "Calm down," she said to him in a reassuring voice, "let me have a look."
She took his paw in her hand and examined the wound closely. It didn't look deep enough for stitches, but from the look of the squirting blood pattern, he had definitely punctured an artery. Picking up a napkin from the table, she wrapped it tightly around his paw. Mentally, she kicked herself for not bringing her purse. She always had a spare first-aid kit in it for instances like that one.
As she did, she spoke to him in a calm voice to distract him from what was going on with his paw. "I'm Juliette and I'm a nurse. Can you tell me your name?"
Juliette stood in line, having just got off work for a break. She had every intention of getting a strong cup of coffee and ignoring the world for a while. She tapped her credit card against her leg impatiently, wishing that the mutant at the front of the line would hurry up. At the moment, she was arguing with the cashier about whether or not her coffee was decaf.
She sighed and looked around the crowded cafe, glancing at the other mutants. It felt nice to not have to worry about who might be looking too closely or who might see a little too much. She let herself absorb some of the light from the lamps above, having been running on not nearly enough for a few days. Her electric bill was far too expensive to justify absorbing any more than necessary.
When it finally got to be her turn, she ordered a macchiato and sat down in a nearby booth, just a little ways over from a wolf-looking mutant. She took out her laptop and began to reply to some emails that she had been putting off, glancing up every once and a while to look around the cafe.
Juliette waited for Atian's response as he seemed paralyzed by fear. She looked at him urgently, knowing that they would have little time to discuss anything. He stood with his mouth open, and then muttered something like "I don't know." She sighed and shook her head as she waited for him to compose himself.
The META bot clambered up the side of the fire escapes noisily, causing Juliette to get back into a fight stance.
“I could shoot you?! I mean if you absorb the arrow I can shoot you.” Arian finally replied. Juliette looked back at him and thought for a moment.
"If your shots are made of pure energy, then that's perfect," Juliette said distractedly. She searched her pockets for something, anything that could help them at that moment. After a second, she pulled out her cellphone and shone the light on her hand, which started to glow. It wouldn't give her much, but it was better than nothing.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Atian raise his hands, ready to shoot. She braced herself to be hit, ready to absorb the energy. Before she could, though, they were interrupted by the META bot. “Hostile detected.” It said loudly.
She watched as Atian jammed the barrel of its weapon, admiring his power. The META bot stepped back, still trying to shoot of its weapon.
"What else can you do with that power?" Juliette asked him as the bot was distracted. She used the little bit of energy that she had absorbed through her phone to shoot another blast at the bot, knocking it farther back. She needed more, though. Something big to do anything more than little blasts. It would be incredibly helpful if she were able to get enough to fly, but also incredibly unlikely unless Atian was packing more than energy arrows.
"No, you're just not the only one with light abilities." Juliette shook her head at Atian when he asked her if she was copying his abilities. She found it sort of a strange coincidence that they would have met in such a mundane way and have such similar abilities.
“The police are coming…” Atian's voice cut across her thoughts. She looked up and realized that she could hear sirens in the distance that seemed to be getting louder by the second. Juliette cursed under her breath as she stepped into better sunlight. Atian started to say something that she couldn't quite hear, but he was cut short.
“Sur-surrender Mutant citizen. I order you to stan-stand down.” Came the deep metallic voice of a META bot. Juliette stood, frozen in shock. She had so far managed to stay out of the bots' way, but it seemed that today was her lucky, or rather unlucky, day.
“Surrender now, or be destroyed.” The META bot said as it dropped the head of a smaller bot. After a moment of pure shock and fear, the gears began to turn in her head.
She stepped closer to Atian, noticing that he was just as afraid, possibly even more so than she was. With good reason, though. The bot was downright terrifying. She shot it with an energy blast, causing the bot to be knocked back from the concussive force.
"I need some way to get more energy," Juliette whispered to him, making sure that the bot wouldn't see. "Can you give me any?"
Juliette watched interestedly as Atian shot a blast at the ladder, releasing the hatch. She let out a breath, relieved that he had understood her meaning. She watched him curiously, wondering if his power was similar to hers. However, time was short and she would have to ask later.
“You first.” Atian had stated calmly. Juliette nodded, knowing that there was no time to argue. She stepped up onto the first rung of the ladder and began to climb. She fell into a steady rhythm as she pulled herself up each time. Every moment or so, she looked back to make sure that he was following.
“I heard something over this way!” Came a voice from down the alleyway. Juliette turned with an annoyed expression and shot an energy blast, raising her eyebrow as she realized that Atian had the same idea.
As they climbed, Juliette was silent. Atian was not. “So you’re an ability copier right?” He asked her.
Juliette turned back and shook her head, glancing at the rooftop. "What gave you that idea?" She asked him as she stepped off the ladder. Looking down, she realized the mob had nearly tripled. They would need to find somewhere to go after the roof.
Juliette stood at the front of the line, tapping her fingers against her thigh to keep busy while she waited for the cashier to ring up her items. Glancing over the racks of miscellaneous food and drinks, she added a granola bar to the counter. She had removed one earbud to be able to talk to the cashier, and she suddenly heard something over the noise from her music. She turned and looked around, spotting a purple-haired teen.
"I'm sorry?" She asked him quietly as she racked her brain as to what he might have said. "Oh," she said, suddenly realized that she had seen him in front of the line before but her eyes hadn't registered it. Her face flushed in embarrassment as she took her items off of the counter. "Here, you go first."
She stepped back for him to step in front, but changed her mind after a moment. She felt the little wallet she was holding and decided that she would be able to swing it. "Actually, why don't I just get that for you? It's only fair."
Juliette's face remained impassive as Atian snapped at her. She understood that it had been a rather stupid question, but she didn't feel that she deserved the way he spoke. When she replied, her voice sounded slightly strained, as if she was holding herself back from returning the tone. "I wanted to be sure. There are lots of other reasons that people have strange appearances."
She noticed him looking around the alleyway, and realized that she had led them to a dead end. She hadn't even realized it; she was simply looking for somewhere out of view. However, now they were trapped, and a mob was quickly approaching.
“We've got to get out of here and you bring us to a dead end." Atian had said to her.
"Look, I'm sorry, alright? I didn't know that this would be a dead end." Juliette replied with an annoyed lilt in her voice. She looked around desperately for some way around the approaching group. The only thing that came to mind were a series of fire landings that lined the building walls.
"Stay behind me." Atian then said.
Juliette turned around and shook her head at him, "I can handle myself." Her hands lit up almost immediately, although not very bright. She hadn't absorbed anything recently and she wasn't sure if she had enough to get through a fight. "The fire escapes," she whispered to Atian, hoping that he would understand that she wanted to climb them to the rooftop.
Central park was a beautiful place to be during the spring. People had begun to crawl out of their homes, where they had stayed for most of the winter. Many of the animals became more active as well, enjoying the warmer weather. The grass had started to look green again and some daffodils had even begun to sprout along the paths.
Couples walked along the paths, enjoying each other. Parents took advantage of the nicer air and sent their kids to play on the playground structures while they drank coffee on the benches.
Juliette Lawson was also enjoying the warmer weather. She had never taken to the cold and proudly saw herself as a hibernate-r. However, as soon as it was warm enough, she spent as much time as possible in the park. There were many trails that were perfect for cross-country running.
She had fallen into a steady rhythm that matched the beat of the song she was listening to. Her breath came in short bouts whenever she stepped on the pavement, turning white in the brisk morning breeze. She hummed along quietly to the tune of her song as she ran, thinking that nothing else in the world could top that feeling.
She stopped at a small kiosk and looked at the headline on some of the papers. META Bot Stops Dangerous Mutant, it read. The young woman sighed and shook her head, a sinking feeling filling her gut. She pushed it to the back of her mind and stepped up to purchase a water bottle, thinking that it was her turn in line. She didn't notice as she stepped in front of a young mutant with purple hair.
Juliette watched in shock as the energy danced around Atian's hands. It seemed to almost be pulled into him, but it resisted. She looked up at him and realized that he was just as confused as she was. He seemed to say something, but she was so concentrated on the light that was pulled back to her that she wasn't listening. It was definitely from her, as it shared her familiar yellow-gold glow.
The energy moved quickly through the air and back into her fingertips. She turned her hand over, thinking. After a moment, she realized that the mysterious tingling had stopped. When she looked back up, she saw the astonished stares of the people around them.
"Look I'm so sorry. Are you okay?" Atian asked her. The sounds finally registered in her ears as she was broken from her stupor.
Juliette looked up at him and glanced around, "I'm fine," she replied slowly. "Come on, follow me," she instructed quickly, shooting a glare at someone who asked where he had attacked her. "We need to get out of here."
She grabbed his arm, careful to only touch the sleeve, and lead him away from the crowds of people. She stopped finally in a little alleyway and looked at him. She was far past formalities and asked stated rather bluntly, "you're a mutant, correct?"
Juliette pursed her lips and held the clipboard against her chest. It was clear that Jiri was hiding something. She studied him for a moment before responding. As she searched his face, she noticed his eyes clearly for the first time. They were bloodshot and puffy, a sign of exhaustion, although, that would hardly take a qualified nurse to notice. How long had it been since he last slept, she wondered.
She wanted him to tell her the truth, and even considered telling her own secret. She quickly decided against it, figuring she would never regain the boy's trust if he didn't share in her genetic differences. Instead, she decided to play along.
"I can't do that, I'm afraid. We may have to use anesthesia to relocate your shoulder, which means you can't eat or drink anything before that. If it's not serious enough to require that, though, I'm sure there won't be a problem. We just need a doctor's opinion and some x-rays." Juliette told him seriously. She had had that conversation with patients many times. They were often unhappy to hear the news, especially the younger ones.
She sat down on the little rolling stood beside the bed and began to examine his hand. The bite wasn't all that deep, she decided, but there was one puncture that would need a few stitches. The rest would be fine with just a cleaning and a bandage. After all, one could never be sure what they would find in a human mouth.
"Yes, rewarding indeed," Juliette grinned and shook her head as her hand moved down the form. She looked back up and winced slightly at the noise of his nose, sympathetic to the pain. If there was one thing that could ruin her day, it was the sound of bone on bone. There was a reason she had chosen not to work in the orthopaedic ward.
As he talked about his 'genetic condition', however, her interest peaked. "Can I ask what it is?" Juliette asked him curiously. She couldn't think of any genetic conditions that would require coffee. Insomnia, perhaps, but that was hardly a genetic disorder. Although, it had been argued that certain genes have you a predisposition towards it. Several things ran through her mind at that moment. Drugs, a sleep disorder, and a mutation.
"A genetic disorder might affect your treatment and the drugs you receive. Don't worry, though, everything is confidential," Juliette explained to him, watching closely for his reaction. She knew the number of the on-call psychiatrist quite well, and was ready to call him if necessary.
Juliette nodded as Jiri spoke, and checked off some boxes on the form. She could see how uncomfortable he was in the little area as they entered, and she understood completely. The 'rooms' were hardly private. Unfortunately, they were what the hospital could afford.
"Do me a favour, tell me I'm not the craziest thing you've seen in here," Jiri had asked her. Juliette chuckled and thought back.
"No, I can promise you that you're not," Juliette grinned as images flashed in her mind. Her mere year and a half of experience provided her with enough weird stories to publish a book. She decided to take the safer route and not gross him out with hospital horror stories. "You wouldn't believe how many people come in here with things stuck up their butt."
Took the shirt from Jiri gingerly and handed him a wad of gauze. "Here, this will work better. I'm just going to give you a look-over before the doctor comes by."
Juliette watched the young teen that stood up as after she spoke. At first glance, his appearance was slightly concerning. The E.R. was often full, and it was often a cesspool of strange people with strange stories. Teenagers coming in from a night of drinking or a fight were also frequent, but hardly ever on a Tuesday at 3am. Whether it was the pink hair, the blood streaming down his face, or the pink shirt he was holding, she couldn't be sure, but something about the boy peaked her interest.
Her eyes ran over his appearance, making snap judgements about his injuries. The way he held his shoulder indicated that it was dislocated, and she knew that if he turned at all she would be able to see the joint out of place. She couldn't see his nose from behind the shirt, but figured that it was likely broken. Then, she saw the bite mark. Dog bites were common, but this one was different. It looked distinctly human. What had this boy been doing? She wondered to herself.
She turned and motioned for the boy to follow her through the crowded room as she began to walk quickly, expertly avoiding run-ins with the people in every which direction. Juliette walked to a little area that was sectioned off by a curtain, nearly identical to the one she had just left. This one, however, was unoccupied.
The brunette looked back at the teen and nodded to the little stretcher in front of her. "Take a seat, please." She instructed as she read over his information, "Jiri, is it?"
