The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Rico could not stand the confines of the mansion or its grounds any longer. The wyvern shifter felt he had made leaps and bounds since the time he arrived at the mansion all those months ago, and thus, took it upon himself to shift and take flight. Rico was still plagued with nightmares, the faces and screams of those he had killed and devoured. Rico came to the conclusion that if he was ever going to find peace, he must go into the world and do some good. He left the mansion on a Friday night and stuck to the areas away from the hustle and bustle of New York city.
It did not take him long to find a van speeding down a highway with the sirens and flashing lights of pursuing police cars. The back doors of the van was open and a masked gunman with some kind of harness over a jumpsuit was shooting wildly with a assault rifle Rico had never seen before. The wyvern watched from the drama unfolding below and contemplated leaving it to the police, but he soon came to the conclusion that he was there and he could help, so that is exactly what he did.
Folding the bat like wings to his side the black wyvern dived through the night air and used his strong legs to smash into the van sending it flying over onto its side effectively putting a end to the chase. Rico did not slow and continued away only to turn his long neck around and see that the police had everything else covered. 'Good', Rico thought to himself and continued on through the night. The next day he took shelter in a cave and slept all through the day to conserve his energy for another night of activity.
There was a glow in the horizon of the night and Rico adjusted his path by tilting a wing and banking left. There was a apartment building on fire and firefighters were already there desperately trying to control the blaze. From the fire erupting out the windows like a deep rage it was clear that if any humans were still alive in the lower floors, they would not alive much longer. But there was a woman crying for help from a window on the top most part.
Rico was about to land and ask the first responders what he could do but the building made god awful sound as it caved in a few floors down from where the fire raged the worst. With the building mere seconds if not a minute away from collapsing completely Rico made the split second decision to dive through a windowed wall. Dragon or not the heat inside was unbearable, the very air itself burned his lungs with every breath, scales even started to melt and fuse giving off the appearance of glass, Rico would need to act quickly to save the trapped woman. Outside a wall exploded in a cascade of fire and embers as the wyvern came busting out with the upper part of his body wrapped in the wings like a blanket.
Landing on the ground with enough force to crack the asphalt Rico pulled out his neck and head from under the wings and slowly pulled them back to reveal not just the woman, but the baby in her hands. The wyvern did not stick around though and already was limping away into the night. There were to many holes burned into the membrane of his wings and Rico needed to find a place to rest and heal. Despite all the pain his body, eyes, and lungs were in. Rico left with a profound sense of satisfaction and joy in his actions, and for the briefest moment, the wyvern found the peace that he wanted.
When Rico walked back into the surrounding woods away from the town he collapsed and had the first peaceful nights rest in a long time.
"I spent the past two years living in solitude in the woods."
Rico only nodded at this information. He knew all to well about solitude and the struggles that came with it. While solitude was nice from time to time it was something that could do serious damage to the mind if endured for any long a period of time. Like most things in life it was something that had to be taken in moderation. Rico next listened to the woman give him a name and again all he did was watch intently and nod in acknowledgement. A question did come to mind as he observed Amber positioning the umbrella to shield her from the sun, but Rico bite his tongue as to not offend.
"I thank you for the invitation. I haven't been back at the Mansion long and I don't have much news of the outside world. At least, not of the human world. I can tell you where to find a tasty family of deer though."
"Ahh" , Rico said before adding, "So this is not first time you have come to this place?" With this in mind the wyvern tapped a wing claw on the ground in quiet thought very much like a human would a finger on a desk. "I suppose it probably has not changed much in your absence, accept maybe for the faces. If there is one thing I have come to find out, this place loves its routines. It is boring, but yet, one can find comfort in the same day to day activity's."
At this point Rico started to wander off in thought as the creature turned its head to look at the woods. "Always the same, but my blood is on fire for yearning of adventure. To travel the jungles of the amazon in search of lost forgotten civilizations. To walk the winding mountain paths from Nepal to Tibet in search of Nirvana. Perhaps one day the school will take me off the leash and I will be granted liberty to seek adventure in the world." Taking this time to stretch his body the creature was rewarded with a series of loud pops and stood up on its hind legs. "Until that day I suppose a little trip into the woods would do for an adventure. I have never hunted with another before and I think it would be a exciting new experience to add to the book of life. You shall be the leader of the hunt, Lead, and I will follow."
Rico watched as the figure approached and then closed his eyes to pretend having disinterest, but closed eyes or not, Rico was very much aware of his surroundings. He had never seen this person before and Rico found anything new to be of particular interest.
"I'm sorry to interrupt you. If you want me to leave, I will."
The great beast did not respond right away, instead Rico took the time to gather his thoughts in preparation of putting on the mask he wanted others to see him as. With out opening his eyes the beast spoke with his deep voice, "Only in solitude do we find ourselves; and in finding ourselves, we find in ourselves all our brothers in solitude."
Slowing opening his eyes the Wyvern looked at the robed figure with his snake like eyes and added, "Miguel de Unamuno." Letting out a few inquisitive clicks a long forked tongue came flicking out to catch the scent oils in the air. "You are very much welcome to stay." Rolling over to stand on his strong hind legs the beast put its chest low to the ground and extended its wings off to the side in a obvious bow.
Standing back upright again the wyvern folded its wings like a bird and said, "I am Rico, and who might you be? I have never seen or smelled you before. Not that its a bad thing. I love new faces and new smells. More so if they have news from the outside world or stories from there adventures and travels. I don't get out much you see."
In his meditation Rico' mind wandered. The thoughts a random collection of various things. The wyvern thought about how the world he lived in was a world of masks. Each soul Rico encountered like him wore a mask. A mask that portrayed what they wanted others to see and the real selves that was hidden behind it.
Next his thoughts went to thinking about how this world was full of all kinds of people. There was wolves, there was sheep, and then there were shepherds. Rico thought carefully about where he stood in among them all. Rico knew he was a wolf, a predator. But he liked to think he was also a shepherd as well. He was not sure if it was a blessing or curse to have the powers he had. But Rico had made the decision some weeks ago that he would use those powers to help others if he could.
Rico found his memory had been returning slowly with each meditative session he did. He remembered his time on Plum island and of the name the scientists there had given him, Níðhöggr. Having done some research in the school computer lab Rico had discovered just why he was named that. It was a dragon from Norse mythology and its ravenous appetite was legendary, very much like his.
The most accepted opinion was that the arrival of Níðhöggr heralds Ragnarök. Rico was not a fan of that general opinion. Rico much preferred the other interpretation of the old stories. That the appearance of Níðhöggr would bring change and renewal, the redemption of the serpent. Rico was not one for myths or legends, but as of late he wondered if they held any grain of truth.
Next his thoughts shifted to how he could better control his powers. From what Rico came to understand his power was centered around cell manipulation. With that in mind he focused on trying to shift the cells in his body around at will. It proved to be a task far easier thought then done, but with time and practice Rico believed he could master it.
As the wind shifted Rico caught a faint smell and cracked open a eye to find a lightly robed figure moving across the field with a umbrella in hand. It was a smell and figure he had not seen before. This was something that aroused his curiosity and interest. For the moment the wyvern did not shift but instead continued to lay in the sun content with only watching the mysterious figure as it approached the shade of the lonely wise old tree that called this field home.
Rico did not realize the new arrival pushing her way through the crowd until it was to late for him to react. "I don't think that is a good idea" , he said lowly with a nervous voice as she banged on the box. Low enough a voice that she probably did not even hear him. If there was anything bad in the box it did not react to the woman's reactions.
Rico did not have the luxury of focusing on the woman for long though as another student made a attempt to go near the mystery box. All Rico could do was stick out a arm to bar the students path and shake his head. Out of nowhere he felt a impact on his arm and darted his head to find that the same woman from before had bumped into him.
"Oh my god. I'm so sorry".
From the tone of her voice it seemed a genuine apology so Rico did not hold it against her. He just nodded and said with a monotone voice. "Don't worry about it. Its hard to see anything in this rabble". Yet another student attempted to go near the box and Rico had to move his body to block there path. "You hard to hearing? What did I say about leaving it alone not more then two minutes ago?" Rico was getting rather irritated at this point and wished he had some of those chest harness's with leashes that young children wore sometimes in public.
Turning back around he found the woman was already leaving. "That's it!" Rico barked in frustration. "Everyone leave now!" A voice came out of the crowd and said defiantly. "Bite Me"! Rico could not help but give out a chuckle despite his frustration. He did not know who among the crowd said it but Rico had something to say to that. "Don't tempt me. I will eat you".
"No you wont". Rico turned his head to the left but again did not see who said it. "I will". A final voice chimed in and Rico turned his head to the right. "No you wont. Your always threatening to eat people. You have not done it yet. Yesterday you threatened to eat me six times". Rico shook his head at the situation. He was now starting to realize that his threats of eating people did not carry the effect it use to when he first got to the school. He had no intention of eating anyone and the kids knew it.
Before the conversation could go any further the lid of the crate came flying up into the air from the impact of something in it. The whole room along with Rico went silent in anticipation. Rico watch the creature with mint green skin come climbing out the crate and examined it for a moment. It did not look particularly dangerous in his eyes but the red talons on the figure tips gave him cause for concern.
There also appeared to be some kind of device in its hands. Rico always had a distaste of technology so he always eye that as something to be concerned about. The creature, or woman as Rico had come to realize turned around to look at the group and spoke in a language he did not understand.
“ Guten Tag mitschüler, ich bin Elif Schwarzwald”.
Rico stared for a moment trying to process the words only to shake his head and say in confusion. "I'm sorry. I do not understand you." Not knowing what else to do he made an attempt at communicating by tapping his chest. "Rico."
Rico generally made it a rule to avoid gatherings but there was something off. He could not put a finger on it but something about the crowd of students drew him closer. When Rico got closer he could see a crate, and not the special kind either. No, this one was very plain and common. No different then you would expect to see in the back of a moving truck or a warehouse.
He listened to the students talk about all the wild theory's there imagination could come up with. But Rico was not the imaginative type. Finally one of the young students gathered the courage to start moving towards the crate. "All you guys are a bunch of sissies! I will open it". Before the student took another step Rico shot out his hand to grab the shirt collar of the kid behind his neck and said calmly. "Now hold on just a minute. Call me crazy but I don't think it is the best of ideas to just open up some strange box that appeared out of nowhere."
Some of the students nodded their head in agreement, some did not. One even verbally expressed their opinion. "Your not staff member! Why should we even listen to you"? Rico felt that was a fare point and said as much. "No, I am not a staff member and that is exactly why we should not touch it until one of them says so". Rico wanted the students to listen too reason. But then again Rico did not have a reputation for being reasonable when he first came here. He was not sure how long he would be able to keep the students from giving into curiosity and opening the crate.
It was a beautiful morning. White clouds drifted lazily in the blue sky and the sun shined brightly. Rico banked right in his wyvern form to snatch a plastic orange ring off a black and white marked wooden pole in the wide grassy field. Going against his instincts and ignoring how awkward it felt Rico forced his wings to flap in a counter clockwise motion to hover in place. Moving towards another wooden pole he placed the plastic ring onto it with his clawed foot and landed on the ground.
Rico felt very proud of himself. This was the first time he actually managed to hover in place without falling out the sky like a rock. While it was not pretty he had to admit this makeshift training ground the staff set up actually worked. Looking at a flock of birds flying by he suddenly remembered what he was suppose to do this morning.
Upon returning to the mansion he walked alongside the building looking for a particular window among many on the ground floor. It took a moment but upon locating the window Rico tapped the talon on his wing joint on the glass. After a moment the window opened up and Rico stuck his head in. "Good morning Esenya", he said with a happy voice.
A female student with brown hair and eyes about 17 years in age waved but said nothing in return. She was a quiet creature and as far as Rico knew, she did not talk at all. In any case it did not matter to Rico. He liked her for one reason and one reason alone. She was nice to him and did not shy away like the others.
"Do you think today is the day?" Rico asked and turned his dragon like head to look at the bird cage. The young lady went over to it and looked at the cooing mourning dove inside and nodded. "Then it is time to set her free little wing. It is all better now. No creature with wings should be trapped in a cage. I will be waiting outside."
Rico waited in the grassy area for his mute friend and watched as she set the cage down and took out the dove in her hands. It only took a moment but the bird was now flying away free. Rico watched the bird and felt a bit of sorrow. He really wished he could be free like that. In a way Rico felt like a caged bird in a way. But he was not at liberty to go far from the mansion. Upon feeling a hand on his right leg Rico looked down at Esenya and saw the concern in her doe brown eyes.
"I'm ok little wing. I just got lost in my thoughts for a moment there." Moving his neck to the side Rico plucked a yellow dandelion flower from out of the grass with surprising gentleness. He now offered the flower to the mute student in his toothy mouth. "Class's will be starting soon. You don't want to be late. I will see you again after school." At that comment he looked back in the direction the dove had flown. "I am not going anywhere."
Rico watched as she returned back to the mansion across the grassy field and moved his body in a comfortable position for a few hours of meditation. He had found this field to be the most quiet and isolated place on the grounds in the morning with all the students in class. Rico found meditation to very helpful in helping him find spiritual and philosophical enlightenment. He was alone to ponder his existence and its place in the world.
Rico shifted a bit and opened his eyes in a half dreamy state to find the other wyvern watching him. "Wow....." Rico said lowly with a sleepy voice. "That is not creepy at all." Rolling over Rico scratched under his jaw with a clawed foot and attempted to settle back down next to the dying campfire of last nights prey.
'You have to choose young tatter wing. Will you come with me? I will not wait for you any longer.'
The old lizards voice in Rico's mind did not hold any urgency. But when Rico thought about it. Its voice never did. Rico did not answer right away as he thought about the whole situation and what his companion wanted. "I am not ready to come with you right now to live with the others." Rico said lowly as he shifted to look into the dying embers of the campfire.
"From what you have told me in the past the clan and the eyrie kind of reminds me of the Amish. You want nothing to do with the outside world and only wish to be left alone to practice your ways. I am not ready to just uproot and leave everything behind. No matter how much I want to. But I will come to the clan when I am ready." At that Rico went silent before adding. "When It feels right."
The old lizard seemed to accept this response and its invasive thoughts forced there way into Rico's mind.
'As you wish. To find us you but only need follow the tail of Lash-Ana.' At that the voice forced a image to appear in Rico's mind. The image of a select group of stars. 'Follow her tail when the hunters moon shines brightly with a halo across the great water. Far across the sea that glitters like star light. You will find a coastal shore washed with white waters. Then you rise high into the sky until you see nothing but a ocean of white clouds. It is then that you will see the sky islands. It is here you will find us. It is here that we will be waiting for you.'
The old voice of the other creature was relaxing in Rico's mind and just as it had finished imprinting the closely guarded instructions to finding there home Rico had fallen back asleep. When he woke up in the morning the old wyvern was gone leaving nothing behind but the faintest scent. Remembering the instructions Rico suddenly lost interest in turning to human form and visiting the nearby town.
“ Ragnarok is a terrorist organization, so it’s likely they were manipulating you to use you as a weapon to cause some sort of attack."
Rico listened to Devon speak without saying anything in return. His words said many things that acted as triggers for several memories that came all at once very much like his words. The best way Rico could describe it was as a flood gate had opened and he was being hit a heavy stream of water. A heavy stream of memories. As much as he trusted Devon there was only one thing he could say to his therapist. "I did not work for them, I was suppose to infiltrate and find out what they were doing. I was suppose to be a spy."
Those words alone triggered more memories. Images of a giant roach in some kind of vehicle and the words. "You make friends with who I want you to." At least that is what Rico thought he remembered. It was all fragmented like a shattered mirror. Its pieces cast out and spread apart over a distance. Being used as a weapon stirred up images of his time at the facility on Plum Island. Images that like his memory was also fragmented. It was not something he was willing to talk about now.
I’ll note the animalistic urges your mutation is causing with the eye contact, but it’s up to you to work on that control too.”
Rico did not have any thoughts on those words other then a quiet nod of his head in agreement. There was a lot of things going on that he did not understand and wanted to leave for others far wiser then him to figure out on his behalf. But there had been many that had offered a open hand in friendship only to betray him so Rico was naturally very cautious.
"It sounds like we should get a biological work up done, check your hormones, heck even the brain chemistry like you said. That might give you more insight and help us help you. If you find it difficult to sleep, keep control, or even resist fight or flight impulses then I should recommend a psychiatrist who can actually prescribe you something. Getting the blood work done is a good first start.”
"Tests....... experiments......." At those word devoid of any emotion Rico looked at Devon with a blank face. "What makes you or anyone here any different then those who kept me on that island?" Rico thought it was a damn good question. "How do I know that you are not like them? Offering a hand of friendship with other motives in mind?"
He went quiet again and shrugged in defeat or indifference. "I guess I don't have much of a choice. Do your tests and examinations. If there is anyone to trust I like to think I can trust you." Rico went quiet again to listen to the suggestions of meditation amongst other things. But at the question of what he found relaxing Rico had but one answer.
"Plants. I like growing things. It is relaxing for me."
"This is still a place for mutants, isn't it? To offer shelter? I need shelter."
While Rico had no intention of letting this creature in smelling of death and all. Its words tugged on his heartstrings. With the blowing of the wind he picked up on other scents. More faint ones. No..... Her words. At this moment Rico really wished the person at the door was a man. It would have been a whole lot easier for him to do what he had to do.
"Yes this is still a place for mutants seeking sanctuary. But I have no authority to just let you in. I'm sorry." Those words tasted bitter on his tongue. She was wrapped in rags. This was a church of sorts, a beacon of hope for there kind to come to. And here she was claiming sanctuary and he was turning away. It could be compared to a priest turning away someone claiming sanctuary at a church.
Rico rested his forehead on his forearm and looked into the woman's eyes that were black, but not devoid of emotion. At least he thought he saw emotion in them. "I'm sorry ma'am. But I cant let you in here." Rico repeated with a softer tone. More for him then for her. It felt wrong but there were rules and he could not just let anyone in right? But he was here. How dangerous could this ragged figure be? Not wanting to compromise his place at the mansion for fear of being caste out he stuck to what he said.
Rico hated how this weekend the other nameless wyvern like him had forced a ultimatum. Rico had chosen who was to be his family, his clan, and the ancient creature had left. Rico found he quiet lonely. So many times he had thought things and always the other wyvern was quick to answer his thoughts. But now? Rico felt lonely. No matter what he thought. The familiar wise voice of the other was not there to give advice or to console him. Rico was alone.
He walked through the mansion lost in his thoughts feeling empty and lost. At first he did not notice the knocking on the doors. But after awhile the wyvern shifter came out of his daze and opened the door. On the other side was a figure completely clothed wrapped up in a blanket. He was about to open the door and did as such only to close the door until a crack just enough to speak through.
His sudden reaction was triggered as the wind shifted. He picked up the scent of death. Not the kind he was use to. Recent decay. No, this was the scent of long decay. That of bodies rotting after a long time. The scent of a mass grave. A scent Rico was all to familiar with as he had visited the mass grave his adoptive mother and father were in long ago.
Rico was animalistic in nature and compulsive. But not so compulsive as to let a creature through the front door that smelled of a mass grave of corpses. "What do you want?" He asked lowly. "Why are you here?"
Very interesting character app you have. Very well thought out as well. My guy lives at the mansion at the moment. Feel free to look at the link in my signature. If its somebody you would not mind meeting at the mansion I would be happy to join a thread with you.
"What is your problem with humans anyway? I like humans. Humans raised me you know." Rico said to the elder wyvern very much annoyed at the old lizard. He was always talking down on humans like they were animals. Mind you Rico had accepted the fact he would always crave human flesh because that is just the way it was. But how he killed and ate them was for him to decide. These were living breathing people with hearts, souls, and dreams. The old Wyverns words forced there way into his head.
'I do not have a problem with humans. As a matter of fact I think every Ostroja should own at least one.'
"Again the slave jokes....." Rico grumbled. "I know you told me once upon a time our ancestors ruled over mankind and used them for slave labor and food. But that is in the past. Last time I checked they outnumber us a hundred to one." The mental words of the psychic wyvern entered Rico's mind again this time more sad.
'Those were good days. Nothing could oppose us. We ruled like gods. But in our greed we also bred the humans like cattle and as often is the case with slaves and there masters. They rebelled. Gone are the days that we could fly openly in the skies with no fear. Gone are the days of our glory. Now we hide only to come out and hunt at night. The blood of our people has grown weak and it has grown thin Rico. You must come with me back to the others. You have to do your part for the clan.'
Rico knew what the old lizard wanted. He knew from the first time they had met when he asked Rico to go with him before. "I am still thinking about it. I just am not sure about the whole sitting around screwing around all day thing. Mind you I love it just as much as the next guy. But cmon, it will get pretty boring if that is all I do day after day. Pretty sure after a week of that I would not be able to walk straight."
At that thought Rico looked back to the campfire of the humans the two of them had eaten. "I'm going to sleep off this meal. You should do the same old man." With that Rico laid his head down and settled down for the night. Rico was done talking and ignored any more invasive thoughts the other attempted.
Rico rolled onto his side in dragon form to reach out with his long neck and grab the last cold can of beer out a cooler. Biting into the can with enough force to puncture it he looked up to the sky with his head and allowed the cold fluid to run out the can down his throat. Confident the last of it would go where it was suppose to because of gravity's sake Rico spit the can out to the side with the others.
'I don't understand why you enjoy that piss water so much.'
Rico ignored the invasive thoughts of his elder and relaxed onto his back. He scratched at his chest for a moment before using the talon of his wing joint to pick at his teeth. It had been a nice meal but there was something there lodged between his gum and teeth. After a few moments the dragon forced out a human rib bone shard lodged in his teeth and gave a loud belch and sighed in relief.
'Alcohol does not go well with our body's you know.'
The invasive mental thoughts of his telepathic companion said. "I know......" Rico said in a slurred voice. "But that just makes me a cheap drunk. Such wonderful creatures humans are. Not only did they provide us with a meal. But they provided booze as well." At that he rolled over lazily and looked at the campfire.
"A hearty meal, cold beer, a warm fire. It does not get much better then this." At that he looked to the sky. Looking at all the sparkling lights in the night sky Rico added. "Look at all that..... do you ever wonder if there is a god?" At that the elder wyvern resting not far away with crossed wings slowly turned his head and looked at the pile of human bones discarded not far away in a pile.
'I don't know..... Ask them. They screamed for gods help as we ate them.'
Being intoxicated Rico let out a laughing sound of there kind that sounded almost exactly like a Australian kookaburra bird before speaking in the human tongue. "Yes, I suppose that is true. No god appeared to save them. So clearly there is no god." At that Rico paused. "I have satisfied one hunger. But I still have yet to satisfy another." He did no elaborate. But the elder wyvern with the gift to read his thoughts has something to say as he looked away and spoke with disgust.
'Really? Have you no shame? Wanting to mate and couple with a human. You might as well lay down with a animal. Still, if you insist there is a human town not far away. You can go there tomorrow to satisfy your need.'
