The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

In what started out as a panic Danica had called attention to the two of them by trying to get away. It was a gut reaction and not born of forethought or planning. However what came next was. As Danica paced back and forth trying to think of what to do next, the sound of footsteps could be heard running up the stairwell leading to the roof of the old abandon building. From the sound of things there were either three or four people, then the door opened and a trio of police officer spilled out with their guns drawn. They weren't pointing them, but they were definitely ready for action. Instead of fleeing or attacking, she took a completely different approach... and began wailing.
“Thank god you're here, I thought that thing was going to kill us!” Danica said, running toward the officers.
“Ma'am, please calm down. What happened?” the first officer said.
“I don't know, it all happened so fast. My friend and I came up here to relax and just get away from things for a while, then we heard some sort of fight in the alley. I peeked over the edge and there was this big horrible spiky mutant attacking some guy, then it flew up here and took off. It was awful!” Danica said.
“Which way did it go?” the first officer said.
“That way, jumping along the rooftops,” Danica said, pointing behind them.
“Ma'am, I think it best if you and your friend leave the area,” the first officer said. The man began speaking into his shoulder radio and they moved back down the stairwell.
“My thoughts exactly... sucker,” Danica said, then turned to Noel and waved her toward the stairs. It didn't take long for the little woman to beat a hasty retreat through the crowd before anyone may have recognized either of them. Once they were away from the scene of the incident and things finally started to calm down, Danica started to lose it again. This time she didn't freak out and blow herself onto a rooftop. It was a case of nerves so bad she began to visibly shake.
“I'm really sorry about what happened back there, it's just... I never thought... god... Sector Seven again?” Danica said.
The sound of the sirens seemed to snap Danica out of her mental haze, but the sudden panic attack had yet to relent. The only thing on her mind at this point was getting as far away from this place as possible, and doing it post haste. Now with a large dose of adrenaline coursing through her veins and the urge for flight over fight, she took off running toward the entrance to the alleyway they'd ducked into. It turned into a short run as a police car pulled up and Danica stopped short as they'd yet to see her. A quick about face brought a quick dash around the corner to the other end of the alley.
Once again she was faced with another police car that had stopped close to the scene of the incident. The first thing to go through her mind is that they were trapped. Now the panic was starting to turn into anger, being trapped was something Danica would never allow herself to be again if possible. They couldn't go forward, or backward, then it would seem that brains finally managed to overcome fear. If they couldn't go forward or back, the only option left was straight up. One of the buildings was only two story meaning that Danica could easily reach the roof.
About to do that she stopped and looked over at Noel. Regardless of her possibly being human or mutant, the young woman had risked her life for Danica. Now to leave this potential new ally to fend for herself was something the short woman was prepared to do, yet it also presented a problem. Danica had never tried to jump jet with another person before so she had no idea how much of an affect the additional weight would have. Unknowns aside there was only one course of action left to take, and Danica decided it was time to act.
Without much warning she ran up behind Noel and wrapped both arms around her legs. ”Going up!” With that she put maximum effort into their escape attempt and channeled energy into her legs. A moment later there was a low thumping sound as the two shot into the air at a slight angle. The blast barely brought the two level with the lip of the roof and Danica could see this. “Aw crap.” They were barely out of arm's reach when almost on instinct Danica fired off a second blast that pushed them even higher, and over the top of the roof.
She let go of Noel after that so the woman could try to stick a decent landing while she barely managed to touch down without falling over. The use of her abilities was still fairly unrefined and this had to have been one of the craziest things she'd tried to date.
Danica thought about what Tyson said for a moment, then realized he was probably right. With the claw trying to make out with someone probably would have resulted in a visit to the emergency room and a lot of uncomfortable questions. The problem now was that she was fresh out of ideas on how to help. There was only one of suggestion that might help the situation, but it probably wasn't one that he would be too excited to hear about. “Well, to be honest about the only thing I can think of now is asking someone at the mansion if they know of a way to help you. I'm fresh out of ideas.”
Standing there briefly she smiled, then extended a hand putting some real effort into cutting loose with a blast of kinetic energy. Like an arc of orange electricity it cut through the air and struck a tree a short distance away from them. The impact resulted in a large explosion of wood chunks, then the tree gave a large groan, cracked, and fell over into their path. Having buckled under its own weight from the sudden loss of mass Danica just looked down at it with a smirk on her face. “On the other hand if you really do want to chew the scenery, I'm all for that.”
Now that the would be assassin was dead, Danica looked at the other woman who wasn't very far away from her. Still not sure what to make of the whole situation she looked at both hands and summoned just enough energy to send small arcs crackling across her hands. This only confirmed that the man was the source of the initial problems with her abilities. Still rather pissed off over the whole situation Danica looked over at Noel, let the energy fade, then held her hands palms out, to show she wasn't hostile. The situation was still tense for her as this was the first time someone had ever tried to outright kill her in such a manner. Although with Noel putting her gun away, it was obvious she meant no harm either.
Still in something of a defensive mood she walked around Noel one good time checking her out, then looked down at the assassin again. It was obvious that they needed to find out some sort of clue as to who this man worked for, if someone knew about Danica it was likely that they would try again, not an idea that she was particularly thrilled about. The assassin was as dead as they came so she was no longer worried about that. “Name's Danica, thanks for the assist by the way, whoever you are.” The response was a little curt, but under the circumstances Danica was focused on the situation. Now determined to get to the bottom of what was going on she began to search her attacker for clues.
While searching he man she noticed there was a patch on his arm, one that was covered up by a second black patch, obviously meant to conceal the first. Reaching up she tore it away to the sound of a small rip. In that instant Danica let out a loud gasp, fell to the ground, and crawled backwards as if she'd just seen the devil himself. Eyes wide at first she hit the back wall of the alley, then quickly closed them, to the point of near hyperventilation now she was trying to calm down. For the moment she wasn't succeeding. The patch on the man's arm was that of a golden diamond outline with the number seven in the middle.
“Yeah, seriously. I know that might seem like it's somewhat out of the blue, but it could help. I know that in men after the fact, it lowers testosterone and aggression. Not to mention it's a great stress reliever,” Danica said. Despite her attempts to help things didn't appear to be going well and the little woman was basically out of ideas beyond this. There was one last thing that came to mind, but she'd prefer to save that for the very last. There were a few other questions she had in mind as well, to see where things were going in general, but she was curious to hear Tyson's response to this.
“So tell me, do you plan to stay at the mansion? It seems like the best course of action under the circumstances. There really aren't many places out there that people like us can go for safety,” Danica said. “By the way, I say people like us, because I may look human on the outside, but even I'm a risk in public... because I can't always control my powers. You're... not the only one who's killed people... I've let my own fear and anger lead me to make some damn stupid choices.” That last statement struck home in more ways than one. There were a few people that Danica felt deserved what they got, and others that she well knew didn't. There was a considerable sense of guilt on her part, and it was something she tried not to think about very much.
"I doubt that would be very helpful, when I get pissed I tend to blow things up. I'm not really good at calm anger management," Danica said. Trying to help Tyson was turning out to be more difficult than Danica realized. For a time she just stared at him, then looked away realizing he probably wouldn't appreciate that very much. Still trying to think of something an idea popped into the back of her mind, but was quickly discarded. However that same idea quickly popped back into her head. It wasn't something Danica had considered before, but in retrospect it could very well help him.
She looked at Tyson again and started to say something, then stopped. This wasn't something she knew how to phrase very well. Subtlety wasn't one of Danica's strong suits, but regardless the idea to make more sense the more she thought about it. Finally giving up on a way to say this carefully, she finally just looked up at Tyson. "There is one thing that helps me calm down, have you considered getting laid?"
Trying to see the best in people wasn't easy for Danica when there was so much ugliness in the world, especially toward mutants. There were times that she wanted to lash out at everyone and everything, yet deep down she knew it wouldn't accomplish anything. The only thing that seemed to be going well for her so far was a place to stay and people that wouldn't be freaked out by what she was. There was at least a small sense of security here, and that was something Danica would have to work with. There was something else that was starting to form in the depths of her mind. Danica was becoming angry over how she'd been treated, but this wasn't the type of anger that you lashed out at people with. This was the type of anger that made you get up whenever someone knocked you down, because they knocked you down.
"Thank you for all your help Cafas, I really do appreciate it. If you don't mind I think I'd like to be alone for a while, I need to think some things over," Danica said.
It was obvious to Danica that her suggestions weren't well received. It was somewhat disappointing as she hoped that they might help Tyson, at least to some degree. Rather than walking after him, she let young man blow off some steam. Perhaps a mutant self-help book deal wasn't in her future after all. Once again trying to organize her thoughts, Danica decided to keep it simple this time.
"Okay, maybe the bit about playing a dog was a bit much. My point was for you to think outside the box about this. As to the instincts and hunting, it's up to you. My point is that you're going to have to find a way to come to terms with your new existence, otherwise it'll drive you nuts. If you can find a better way, by all means, go for it.
Now I do know one piece of advice that will help you, and this one I speak from experience on. Take life a day at a time, a problem at a time, because the sheer enormity of it all will drive you nuts otherwise. Don't worry about a week from now, or a month from now. Worry about today, and maybe tomorrow if you're feeling gutsy."
With the look of a kid who just walked into a candy store, Danica let out a gasp upon seeing Darkshift's wings and stepped closer. Ever so carefully she reached out and touched one with her hand, feeling the soft black feathers. "Oh... my... God... I am so totally jealous! Your shifting abilities are awesome!" Danica said, then looked up. "What I wouldn't give to be able to shift about another foot and a half straight up, right?"
Scanning the area Danica located a small tin can, then pointed a finger, and knocked it down the alley with a small blast of orange energy that looked more like an arc of electricity. "I can do that too, and they come in stronger flavors. I even have eye beams, but they to make walls go all explodie, so I think I'll hold off on that one for now."
Deciding to show off a little just because she was in a good mood, Danica pulled more energy into her hand. From there she released a blast from her palm and hit the side of a dumpster. It left a fist sized dent along with a loud WHAM, making the refuse container shake lightly. "You know, now that I think about it, I don't even know what kind of energy this is. It just wallops the hell outta things."
The last thing Danica expected was to wake up in a soft bed inside a nice room. In truth she wouldn't have been surprised to find a jail cell and iron bars after a display like that. Kindness was such a rarity for mutants that Danica wasn't entirely sure how to deal with it. Sitting up in bed she looked around and sighed. The sudden eruption of her abilities was both humiliating and embarrassing. "And that would be one of the aspects of my abilities that I can't control. I'm really sorry Cafas," Danica said. "So much for not trying to blow you up again. "
Now instead of being witty or sarcastic, Danica was depressed. It seemed like it was just one problem after another, then when it all seemed to start turning around, something like this happened. Normally Danica might make some sort of comment about being fully clothed in bed, but she just wasn't in the mood. More than anything she was at a loss for how to handle this. "How do you do it, put up with your life being turned inside out, powers you never wanted, a world full of people who hate you. How do you not just go crazy?"
This is a non-MRO fanfiction I wrote a while back. It takes place in Mushroom World, but the Mario Brothers aren't the focus of the story. Hopefully someone will enjoy it.
With a little bit of a sigh Danica finally relented and began to give a detailed overview of her abilities. This wasn't easy for her to reveal, talking about this, even in print, made her feel vulnerable and exposed. More than once she stopped and looked up at Cafas with a small sigh. Then continued with the paperwork. Most of the way through the stack she mumbled almost absentmindedly, "Who runs this joint anyway?"
While writing Danica stopped for a moment and flexed her hand, as if to relieve a cramp. Not long after that an orange arc of energy danced down her forearm, then a few more over her body. Soon the chair Danica was sitting in began to vibrate. "Now, are you kidding me, right now?" Danica said, then handed the clipboard to Cafas. "You might want to get a good bit away from me, this could get... tricky."
Before long the screws vibrated out of the chair and she stood up as it fell apart. The kinetic energy continued crackling around Danica and rapidly grew in strength. After reaching a certain point the energy suddenly disappeared. "Bang," Danica said. Throwing her arms out and head back, an omnidirectional blast of kinetic energy ripped through the room flattening everything within a ten foot radius of her. Once the violent explosion of energy was gone, Danica fell forward and hit the floor like a sack of potatoes.
"Okay, first of all, about the hands and talking, I really don't know what I would be able to do about that. I hate to say it, but you'll probably have to learn those skills over again," Danica said. "About hurting people, I have some ideas on that, but first let me tell you some of the advantages to your new form from my humble point of view."
There were a few things to say on this, so Danica took a moment to collect her thoughts. "Okay, first off, it might be a little embarrassing, but if you stripped and then curled up on the floor like a dog, most people would likely think just that, you're a really big dog. They'd be more likely to say and do things around you they wouldn't otherwise. Also, I'm sure you've heard that old saying about smelling fear, you probably can.
Creatures, even humans, give off pheromones indicating their emotional state. Most people just don't have a good enough sense of smell to pick them up. That combined with watching body language, will likely tell you more than what they say. At least about their intentions and if they're lying or not. Then there's the fact you can, no doubt, identify people by scent. When you adjust to your heightened senses, you'll find they can provide a wealth of information you didn't have access to before."
The next part of the conversation would no doubt get interesting, but this was one area that Danica felt like she might be able to do some good. "Okay, now as to what you said about hurting people. I do know something about animal psychology, my mother owned enough of the furry bastards. No offense intended, I'm just not a cat person. If you're going to learn to control your animal instincts, the first thing you have to realize, is that you can't control them.
As strange as that sounds, just hear me out on this. If you take these new instincts, then try to suppress and ignore them, they'll end up exploding. When that happens, someone else might not live to regret it. You probably have an urge to hunt, so you should hunt, just not people. There are plenty of rabbits, squirrels, and deer around, kill'em if you need to.
See, if you feed your instincts rather than deny them, it'll take the edge off how powerful they are. Then you can suppress them. The ideal situation, in my opinion, is controlling them until it's appropriate to let them loose. Does any of this make any sense to you?" Danica said.
Instead of walking toward the street, Danica walked further into the back alleys of the city, listening to Darkshift talk. They both seemed to be off to a good start, and also appeared to share a fairly twisted sense of humor. Although in recent times, there was very little about Danica's life that could be considered normal. "Most people are afraid of mutants. Not you. Curious. You a mutant or have mutants in your life?" Darkshift said.
The question didn't come as much of a surprise. Thinking on that briefly, Danica decided to have a little fun for once. Instead of answering, she stood still for a moment, then a modest burst of orange energy erupted from the little woman's legs, sending her nearly fifteen feet into the air. At the apex of the leap, Danica did a flip, then came down and landed on her butt. Obviously not how she intended to land.
"Ta-da!" Danica said, giving a goofy grin as she stood up. Things actually seemed to be going a lot better than when this whole outting began. In the matter of a few minutes Danica went from being fairly pissed off, to a relatively good mood. Perhaps it was from having another mutant to talk to when it didn't feel like your life was falling apart, at least not at the moment.
"When it comes to the hands, I honestly don't know what to say. I mean I can see your point, those look like they'd be mighty tough to use for much," Danica said. "How long have you been like this?" As the two of them continued to talk she tried to think of something to help put Tyson's mind at ease. One of the biggest problems for Danica was finding anything about her powers to like. His situation wasn't only interesting, it presented some unique opportunities. On the other hand, Danica wasn't too sure about the kind of reaction it would cause. There were both problems and merits to this.
"Walk with me for a bit if you wouldn't mind," Danica said. "I think it's time we got to work on helping you." There was a lot going through Danica's mind as she tried to mentally organize some sort of means to help Tyson with the obvious litany of problems he was facing. This was one of the more extreme mutations she'd seen, so helping the young man might prove to be quite challenging.
This late at night there wasn't anyone nearby in the park, so it allowed the two of them to move about with relative ease. Taking a moment to gather her thoughts, Danica finally spoke. "There are two main things I'm considering at the moment. The first being the foremost concern on your mind, if you'd be willing to share it with me. The second is that right now, unless I'm mistaken, you only see the negative in regards to your mutation, however I see some positives, if you're interested in hearing them."
