The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"Well, I just want to look at the tank all around; what kinds of fish you have, the conditions of the tank, the ph of the water...that sort of thing. And if something isn't right, I can show you how to make it better for them."
He gave another reassuring nod as he walked with her, adjusting his glasses every now and then. When they got to her room, he gave the tank a good look-over. "Hmm..." he murmured. "Nice overall setup...doesn't seem as though they fight...Ah, there's the patient in question...Hmmm....Aha!" He looked back at Abby.
"I see the problem. The back of the tank isn't getting clean enough; very common when tanks have a lot of decor. So, just be extra careful and ensure the whole tank gets clean. Now, to treat the fungus, you just put a little of this in the filter like so..." He demonstrated, then handed her the box.
"Now, I need you to do this once a day. And every day you do it, replace about half of the water in the tank with clean water, okay? That should clear things up."
He listened, pondering as she spoke. "Sounds a like a fungal infection..." he murmured, thinking over it. "This is usually a sign of another underlying problem, be it bacterial infection, injury. Hang on one moment, we'll get this sorted out."
Momentarily, the large fish-man disappeared into his office, then emerged with a container of medication. "This should do the trick, but if you don't mind, I'd like to go with you, to check on them. Often, bacterial infections are mistaken for fungus. That and I want to routinely check a few things," he gave a nod in an attempt to soothe her, since facial expressions weren't exactly his forte.
The fish-mutant could tell that he wasn't exactly what the young girl was expecting, but at the same time he could tell that whatever this girl needed was of great importance. He adjusted his goggle-glasses as he listened to her, somewhat smiling with his eyes; even still, it would be easy to miss since Manfish's face wasn't exactly built for things like expressions. But he was smiling on the inside, and that's what counts, right?
Although, now he wasn't quite sure if someone sent her his way because he was the resident science teacher and biology expert, or because he looked like someone's pet fish after a nuclear accident. Either way, he was somewhat flattered.
"Well," he replied, adjusting his goggle-glasses again as he looked down at her, "I'm not exactly certain about the pet policy around here." His deep voice started out sounding almost stern, but as he continued, his voice softened. "But, regardless, if someone finds out, they didn't hear it from me." Usually, it was in his nature to abide by the rules, but maybe the fish thing pulled at his heart strings. Or mayb.e it was because she seemed so concerned. He was sure if this had been about a sick cat, he wouldn't have been so sympathetic. Regardless, he had her back here.
"So, what seems to be the problem?" he asked, already mentally running through the possibilities and the solutions.
Manfish sat at his desk in his office, taking turns between rifling through piles of paperwork and looking at his computer monitor. Overall, it looked to be a rather mundane and boring day, which he planned to spend getting lessons ready and other of the tasks that came with being a teacher.
He had to say he liked it, for the most part. Kids would be kids after all. Putting his focus back on the stack of assignments before him, he looked down at one of them and chuckled lightly. He'd been teaching his general science class for younger students, and had them draw a food chain. One of them had drawn what was obviously a sketch of his fish-chimera of a teacher in between a shark and a cat, and the mutant didn't know whether to give the kid extra points, or reprimand them for it. Eh, maybe both.
Yes. Both.
"Excuse me, Dr. Fishman?"
His train of thought was interrupted by a voice he didn't recognize, so he got up from his desk and went to the door. Even though he was in a place dominated by mutants, he still wondered about first impressions. After all, it wasn't every day one ran across a teacher that was a giant mish-mash of fish in a wetsuit.
"This is he," he replied politely in his deep and distinguished voice. "What can I do for you?"
Fallen in love with? They'd just met. But then again, what would Manfish know about love? Love was one of those weird things that was just out of reach of being supported by science. And love at first sight was closer to a Greek myth than reality. Or...was it? What was for sure, though, was that she'd seemed to have fallen head over heels for him already, and...well, to be honest he may or may not have found himself quickly following her.
"I haven't had Chinese in a long time," he said softly, once he'd finally gathered his thoughts. "But I haven't had anything fancy in awhile either..."
He wrapped his arms around her, holding her close for awhile before leaning in and kissing her again. He didn't know why, he just...enjoyed the feeling. Pulling away, he looked at her with a weird smile.
"I'm feeling fancy," he finally said after breaking the silence.
He nodded, listening intently as she spoke, and he nodded. It felt sort of weird when she shifted back. It was okay when a butterfly was on his lap, but it was different when there was a human on his lap. Especially a female. Especially one as good looking as her.
"Yeah, it's hard trying to find the right person, especially when your physical appearance is seen as a disadvantage," he replied. His solid black eyes peered through his glasses to meet with her blue ones as he finished speaking, and he just sat there in silence.
...Holycrap she kissed him. That was...not part of the plan. Was it even okay to kiss on the first date? Actually they hadn't even had their date yet. His mind was racing, but he didn't object. He kissed her back, despite some of the gasps and remarks from passers-by.
Nothing really seemed to matter. In fact, he was still doing his best to remind himself that this was real, and actually happening. If this was some sort of sick joke, then...she was really committed, that's for sure.
"I uh...wow..." he stammered once the kiss broke. One good thing about his appearance: Fish can't blush.
He listened, and read appropriately. Manfish had started to recover from being stood up, and was now just enjoying Jack's company. It was nice to take a break from the stress of dating, anyway.
"Xavier's? Small world. I've actually got an interview there in a couple of days for a teaching position. In the meantime, I volunteer at aquariums and occasionally give speeches. I'm sort of an equality advocate for visible mutants in my spare time."
He chuckled lightly. "Yes, children can be quite...amusing at times. Some can be a handful, but all they need is a little guidance in the right direction," he answered thoughtfully.
"So yes, if all goes well, maybe we'll see each other at the Mansion."
"Hey. Look. Whatever happens tonight, you've been a real nice guy and I don't have any regrets about meeting you." He jumped slightly at the feel of her hand on his. Even touch was much different when he was human. His senses were weaker in this form, but the feel of her hand touching his sent little tingly goose-bumps up and down his arms.
He looked at her and smiled. "Thanks. I'm just...I don't know, I'm just really enjoying this, maybe more than I should, and I..." he sighed, looking away as his face again flushed beet red. "I don't want to do anything stupid to ruin it..." He sighed again, taking a sip of his drink and taking a few more bites of his food, leaving her a little bit if she wanted some more.
"Well, no, it isn't the kids in my class, though they can sometimes be a handfull. It's just...well, there are a lot of...disheartening people in this world. For the most part, my trouble has been in my search of someone. Most women have no interest in me as a person. No one really seems to...it just gets to me sometimes," he murmured as he suddenly felt a funny stinging feeling in his eyes. And something ran down his left cheek, which stunned him for a minute.
What was--oh right. He was starting to cry, something he couldn't do in his usual form. A hand reached up and wiped his eyes.
"Yeah, I know...I'm not being very masculine right now," he admitted. But what did it matter? If she left because he shed a tear, then she was just like the rest of them.
There were so many things he could have said to reply. The main thought being, if they went somewhere to dance, he wouldn't be the one uncomfortable. But, he didn't want to reveal too much too soon. Hell, he didn't want to reveal anything at all. If he had his way, they'd end the night, and both would still look like a pair of sexy humans. But...unless he found this adapted and found some way to make them tag along and be a third wheel so he and his secret would be safe...that wasn't going to happen. And that idea was creepy as hell.
He watched, amused as she divided the meal perfectly, and he ate it politely, enjoying the taste of something different. Even if he'd have to pay for it once he had his fishy-stomach back. But oh well, it was definitely worth it for things to be different for a change.
"I'd be willing to dance, if you're up for it. This just isn't something I do often, so my apologies for any unexpected scares or toe-stepping later on," he replied as smoothly as he could, sort of dropping the hint that all was not what it seemed, but at the same time remaining cryptic and sexy about it.
"Honestly, I do hope you find me suitable to call back once this date is over. It's been...quite refreshing. A relaxing break from the crazies I usually have to deal with." He gave a gentle nod.
"Hm? Oh, I'm just enjoying the moment, is all. Not all women are as impressive as you, if you don't mind me saying," he replied softly, still practically a permanent shade of pink. Then, she leaned in.
"Look, I don't want to be forward, I mean I'm not that kind of girl but..."
His face flushed red, and the reality of his predicament sunk in. Once they left the aura of the nearby adapted, his jig would be up. But they wouldn't be in the graces of this unknowing benefactor forever, so he would eventually have to face the music.
"Maybe," he said with a wink, trying to cover the awkwardness that was settling in as his face turned even redder. God he was seeming like such a virgin right now...
At that moment, the waitress came back with their meal, and he took another sip of his drink. Oh well, regardless of what were to happen, he should just enjoy the remainder of the date while he could. After all, time was definitely limited.
Manfish listened as she spoke, watching in awe as she began to shift into a butterfly. Even her mutation was amazing, and his was...well, what you saw was what you got with him. Everything about this young woman intrigued him, but more than anything was the fact that she was interested in him, and still wanted to be with him despite him being mostly fish in appearance. No other woman had given him the time of day after she'd laid eyes on him. Sure, he'd gotten some friendships out of the ordeal, but...that wasn't the same.
"That's just how it works. People are going to set themselves apart and judge others or set themselves on a pedestal. Someone always has to be lower," he said sadly, eyeing the butterfly as she fluttered around him and landed on his lap.
"I was never really picked on in school, even though by the time I was sixteen, I was pretty much what you see before you. My friends and I were still close, my parents were supportive, but beyond that, I understand how you feel. I was ridiculed by those who didn't know me, and I had to work extra hard to get where I am. Even finding a date is more difficult."
He sighed sadly. "But, these things are here to teach us something."
He nodded in agreement; the giant fish-man understood Jack's predicament. Oftentimes, visible mutations such as their own had a way of impeding every day activities that others often took for granted; talking and walking, for example.
He sipped on his coffee thoughtfully. "PhD, actually," he replied politely. "Marine Biology. The title comes with the doctorate, so I figure I may as well use it. Besides, Dr. Fishman or Dr. Manfish does have so much more of a ring to it than a plain old 'Mister,' doesn't it?" he gave a light chuckle.
"The more I think about it, though, 'Dr. Manfish' has sort of a villainous air to it, doesn't it?" He gave a light shrug. He was by no means villainous, but the name did carry somewhat of an intimidation factor to it.
"So, what do you do? If you don't mind me asking."
He smiled, shaking the extended hand. That wasn't nearly as bad as he expected, but then again, interviews rarely were. And this one was a rather pleasant experience, with an added twist.
"It's a pleasure to be on the team," he replied with a smile. "I just want to teach and mentor the young mutants, to be the mentor to them that I never had. If I can manage that, my goals are complete. So many mutants are on the news for crimes they committed, for the lives they chose, merely because they didn't have a healthy mentor. Not everyone had the love and support that I was fortunate enough to receive. And that, is where it all begins. Show more support, and the city will slowly give rise to more mutant doctors and lawyers, and less car thieves and murderers."
He hung onto what she was saying. "I understand. I feel like even though I'm different, I can use this to help others, which, well, is why I'm here." He chuckled a little, to show he meant no harm by his comments.
"Yes, I did plan on moving here full time. I figured I could do more good if I lived here, after all. It just seems like it would make everything easier and I'd be able to be more involved, and easier to get in touch with." He gave a small smile, now more accustomed to his human form.
Manfish chuckled softly as she slid next to him, and eventually asked about splitting. Meili was actually kind of amazing; this was so fun and relaxed and...natural. It wasn't even the least bit awkward. Granted, he had the nearby adapted to thank for that. He knew as soon as he left the aura, things were likely to change. And...to be honest, he dreaded this, because he was sure as soon as Meili knew what he looked like...well, she probably wasn't going to give him that second date. And to be honest, that really sucked. Visible-mutant equality wasn't easy, but it was easier to apply in businesses and corporations than it would be to what women found attractive.
"No, it wouldn't be weird to split. That actually sounds like a decent idea," he replied as the waitress came back.
"We'll have the Bourbon chicken," he told her, and with a nod she scribbled it on her pad and walked back to the kitchen.
For a moment, he just sat there with this dreamy, yet cheesy-ass smile on his face, just enjoying the rare moment that he was getting here. No matter how it ended, he was going to savor this for as long as he could.
