The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Richard was walking the streets, a cup of coffee in his hand, when he heard the music. It was captivating, it was enchanting, it was beautiful. It plucked at the strings of ones heart, the tune evoking first one emotion then another as the melody morphed in a complex symphony. Richard was transfixed. All to soon it seemed it came to an end. The crowds thinned and drifted away to reveal a slender olive skinned woman in her early twenties, dressed flamboyantly and standing on a milk crate over which was draped a shimmering cloth with the word "Gypsy" embroidered onto it. Richard dropped his contribution in the lady's violin case and headed onward. He was always curious as to the backgrounds of street performers, what were their stories? What stories they could probably tell!
By the time Richard turned the corner and looked back the attractive violin player had already vanished, the milk crate she had stood on was once again just a bare milk crate. Shrugging his shoulders Richard moved on. He was feeling peckish and proceeded to wonder around until he say a place that looked like it served good food. He was not the only one with that idea. The hole in the wall place was busy, there were no free tables.
Richard spied a table with an empty seat and made a beeline for it.
"Excuse me, is this seat taken?" the lady at the table shook her head without looking up.
Richard eased himself in and started looking at the menu. As she looked up he recognized her as the talented violin player from the street. Their eyes met for a moment and Richard smiled and nodded.
"That was amazing playing if you don't mind me saying. I was passing by and was captivated."
He blushed slightly and looked down for a moment. "I am Richard by the way."
He had genuinely enjoyed the playing and would love to hear more, at the same time he did not want to appear creepy in any way. Would it be polite to hold out a hand for a handshake? or was that not done here? He decided to play it safe.

Even to Richard's fuzzy mind, Derek sounded exasperated.
>"I dunno! She saying things that doesn't make sense!"
So that was a Meese, for apparently that was what they were called, and they were no legend. Richard had been made painfully aware of the fact. At present he was wondering if he had a concussion and if he should get checked out regardless.
The Meese slowly started to move towards Richard, Richard was not going anywhere fast and he felt like he was partially embedded in a tree so all he could do is watch as the Meese come closer and closer, its intent unclear. One more blast and he might be little more than a hole in the tree.
>"She thinks I'm her son! I know we're both brown, but I'm more related to a pig than I am to you!"
Richard assumed that Derek was speaking to the Mess instead of him. Things were fuzzy at the moment so almost anything was possible. He also did not think that insulting an mutant animal? who could put a man through a tree was necessarily a good idea. Then again Richard was not the one awkwardly attempting, yes attempting to straddle a Moose. Derek almost looked to be clinging on for dear life, but that could just be fuzzy vision.
>"Richard, are you okay? She didn't hurt you too bad did she?"
Richard tried to get up, the world spun for a moment but no bones seemed broken. His chest ached, as did his back side, and, well most of him, but he was alive and whole!
"Umm, I am ok, I think. I might vote to cut short our hike but I think I will survive." Richard say with a wry smile.
>"she said that she thought you were going to kidnap me, and that she's sorry."
Kidnap? Richard did not think he looked in any way dodgy, but then again who knew what looked like what to a regular moose much less a Meese.
"I can promise you that the thought never entered my mind, and apology accepted, on the condition that she promises to never ever do that again."
Richard stood a little more steadily on his feet. He could move without the tree as a crutch. He paused.
"So.... Um what do you, do you two want to do....."
Was there etiquette that needed to be observed when interacting with Meese?
>"Mm, let's just do that then. That always tend to be more exciting like you said,"
Just like that they started walking, picking paths at random, following them the a branch then picking at random yet again. It was not as if they could get lost.
Richard was learning a lot about Derek. He was a great guy, a great guy who was struggling with the double whammy of being both a mutant and gay. One Richard could sympathize with, the other less so. However Richard listened sympathetically.
The rounded a corner and came face to face with a moose? Wait just a minute, that was no ordinary moose. Moose do not walk on air, or hover? Richards thoughts were rudely interrupted as he found himself flying backwards through the air. The mobile and dynamic Richard met a static and immobile tree with a audible "thwack". The world went black.
Richard slowly came too. Odd words filtered through. Phrases like "..the foretold Meese King" What was a "Meese" anyway? More mumbling then "...Ms Meese" was Meese a surname now? "...Not your sone.." What? What on earth was going on?
The world slowly swam into focus. the light was so bright. And into the expanding cone of awareness and blinding light came....Derek riding on a Moose. To Richards addled brain the sound track of the song from the lion king started to play. "Nants ingonyama bagithi baba...."
Richard may or may not have mumbled the words "Simba" before snapping to some semblance of being in his right mind.
"Derek.." he croaked "Why are you riding a moose, and did she say she was your mother?"
Richard wondered if he had hit his head much harder than he thought.

>… that makes everything else a little more bearable.”
"That's... nice" Richard said almost wistfully. It would have been nice to have a good support system. That had been his family, well up until his mother passed away. His father had become somewhat distant after that. Not very much comfort against the bullying and taunts at school. But Richard had learned to reveal little and to tough it out. Now perhaps he would no longer have to. That he would need to unlearn some defense mechanisms first.
>"Like what?"
"Like what? Ummm.." Richard hated to bore people but Gina seemed genuinely interested. "Well, I usually work with custom electronics or one off Swiss watches, delicate mechanisms or really fine electronics. My powers work at the molecular level." Richard tried not to get into too much nerdy detail.
>".. Meet out front in… fifteen minutes?”
"Sure.." Richard started to reply, then trailed off.
>“I’ll catch you out front. I’m flying up.”
Richard watched, literally mouth agape as Gina, well, took off. He watched her soar gracefully up, then reminded himself to shut his mouth and realized that he also had only fifteen minutes to get ready and that included getting from the ground floor to his own and back, by mundane means.
Richard arrived downstairs a few minutes late, a little breathless. He was wearing casual clothes. Running shoes, cargo pants, t-shirt and a comfortable hoodie.
"No fair" He jested. "I had to take the normal way."
He caught his breath, then held the door open for Gina with a suitable flourish.

> "Are you talkin' about Gina? I know Gina! Here and I talked earlier today about this place!"
"Yea, she is pretty awesome isn't she?" Richard liked Gina. She made him feel comfortable, safe. A person to whom he could just be himself and not worry about judgements, or prejudices. A person like that was rare and definitely friend material.
>"Sure! Yeah, let's do that!"
"Cool." what more needed saying?
On the way they chatted about New York, the pros and cons of life there. The pitfalls and things to avoid, embarrassing situations they had encountered, you know the usual stuff guys talk about when they hardly know each other.
The walk took about fifteen minutes according to Richard's mental clock. They turned to the entrance to the park.
>"Still ready for that adventure? Are there any trails that you've been on?"
Derek's grin, his boyish excitement was infectious. Richard found himself grinning in return.
"To be honest, I have only been here once, and that time me and a few friends just wandered about without paying too much attention to where we were going. So take you pick dear sir!"
This was going to be fun, it was already. Not only was Richard getting to amble among trees, which he always enjoyed, but he was getting to know new people which was always fun. Richard loved trees and observing wildlife. Little did he know......

>“I think… you need to be of a specific mindset… for this kind of community to work,”
Richard looked a question, but either Gina was not finished or she read his expression and responded.
>“I mean, it’s a great idea! I really, really do love it. I’m pretty chummy with the downstairs neighbors, and the group dinners are really nice. I love the movie nights and game nights, it’s just my roommates are kind-of jerks.”
Richard nodded in understanding, roommates/flatmates/dorm-mates who were jerks been there done that. He smiled wryly. "You should have been there when I was in Uni, I had Dorm mates who lived either side of me who hatted each other. One would play classical western opera very loudly through is open window and the other Ethnic Indian and Rock music. The clash was....interesting and not very pleasant."
>“Oh, my bad,”
She was genuinely sympathetic. There was a question he wanted to ask. He deliberated for a moment then plunged ahead.
"Gina, can I ask how have you coped?" Did she grow up in a very loving and accepting family? Was her childhood all flowers and roses? Did she overcome the crap that usually gets thrown at you when people find you you are a mutant? Did she have to explain time and time again, no it was not a disease and no it was not contagious and yes it is safe if controlled and no it will not make you a human ticking time bomb and the like.
Richard smiled at Gina's obvious delight. It was small about the height of a pinkie finger but accurate to the molecular level. Weeelll maybe not that accurate, Richard had not had time to dull a full detailed "scan" and it would not have been polite top stare. Not staring also tended to lower the creepinessfactor of the whole process. A craftsman was always happy when his craft was appreciated and Gina was showing much enjoyment and delight.
>"Richard! This is amazing! Your mutation is so cool! The detail work… oh my gosh, it’s so detailed. So cool!"
She was gushing, yep definitely gushing. It was comments like these which made Richard think that his mutation was actually cool. It was not flashy or powerful like fire or wind manipulators, nor was it very practical like the wings of his charming companion sitting opposite. His power was for small things, like altering words written in ferrous ink (saves rewriting or whiting out those annoying legal forms), or designing micro-circuitry or one off watch mechanisms or the like. He smiled, was that slight warm feeling a hint of blush. No, it was not so, he told himself. He had picked up, along with the accent, the British habit of feeling slightly embarrassed when being praised. Nope, definitely not blushing in the slightest.
"I am glad you like it." He said smiling with delight. He always enjoyed bringing joy to others, whether through music and the arts, i.e barbershopping or acting, or through crafts or just acts of kindness. It was always so.... satisfying.
"I can manipulate inorganics like metal on a molecular level." Richard settled on the simple answer. No need to go into the looooong boring and droll explanation that he could also touch any mechanism and instantly understand its workings. That aspect of his power was even more boring and relatively useless in day to day life.
>“Does it take the energy out of you?”
"No usually this much, but then again I am usually working with things that are much much smaller and a lot more intricate than sculpting." If she wanted to know more she was welcome to ask but Richard had learned not to bore people by turning the fire hydrant of information on them. Using his mutation to create sculptures was a little like using an exacto knife to do chainsaw carving, welll maybe not that drastic but you get the idea.
"Now that you mention it, I am famished. Fancy grabbing a bite?
Richard hoped she knew of at least one good place to grab a bite around.

>"Oh, thank you for that. It'll mean a lot. Hopefully I can get at least two recommendation letters to add to the chance of me being accepted here."
Richard nodded. Yep definitely a new apartment mate.
>"I'm a mutant"
Awesome so no foot in mouth syndrome for today then. That was a relief.
>"Really? That's really amazing, I can influence the behavior of animals and communicate with them. Are most of the people who stay here mutants too?"
Richard shrugged his shoulders, in the grand scheme of things Richard did not consider his power all that awesome. Sure he could shape and mold a tablespoons worth of inorganic material so what, big deal. Being able to summon and talk to animals was wayyyy cooler.
"Wow that is amazing." Said Richard. He thought for a moment. "Yup, I think so. We have a rather beautiful living gargoyle, a wind manipulator and a few others that I have not met yet. I believe that the requirement for staying here is that you have to be a mutant or at the very least mutant friendly."
>"Well, let's get a move on, then! I'm excited to see all the different animals."
"Alright, to the Zoo we go." The two men walked smiling out into the street.
But alas it was not to be.
>"Oh, damn. The zoo's closed forty-five minutes ago. Is there anything else you want to do?"
"Dang!" Exclaimed Richard. "That sucks. Hmm well it is still light outside, and sunset is not till.." Richard checked his phone. "Almost eight thirty. How about ambling through Central Park?" He suggested as an alternative. "Way less fun than perhaps the Zoo, especially with your powers, but why waste a perfectly good afternoon/early evening?"

Margo was smiling, when she was really happy there was this sparkle in her eyes. Richard could not look at that and not smile.
>“I've missed you too. So much.”
What big brother's heart would not melt at such a statement, especially coming from ones, albeit surrogate, little sister.
>“What are you thinking about?”
Richard realized that he was still holding Margo, he gently placed her down still but kept his hands on her shoulders. With a warm smile and an answering sparkle in his eye he answered her.
"I was thinking about how how we met and all that has happened since then." He said with much fondness.
"The first time we met at that coffee shop and I thought you were a fellow customer. We talked about Wooooosters." He smiled. "Then I saved you from becoming a drowned rat." He chuckled. "You hardly knew me then, I was surprised you accepted the lift. Then there was the date...ahh the amazing date, theater and all that." Richard sighed. That had been a wonderful evening. He had not wanted it to end. He had secretly always wanted a little sister and it seemed that fate had granted his wish. "Then there was helping out at the disaster site. So many memories." And all of them happy. Richard was content.
His face turned mock serious. "Eight months Margo! Eight Months! We have not seen each other in eight months. I am a poor excuse for an older brother indeed for letting so much time go by. So how are you? How have you been?"
Richard said hugging her again. He was not expecting a detailed report, well not a really detailed one, but he did want to here all about what had happened.

>"That's not bad at all! I'm currently working with Xavia, the biology and botany teacher at the Mansion as her lab and greenhouse assistant so I'll be able to afford to live here. That is if I'm selected. I hear it's difficult to get in here because of how low the pricing is."
Working at Mansion, as a mutant friendly human or just a friendly mutant?
"I can try to put a word in for you, but in particular if you are a mutant, you get bumped to the top of the list. Also a recomendation from any member of staff at the Mansion would help." Speaking of the Mansion Richard wondered how Ghost was getting on.
"Are you a mutant? If you don't mind me asking" Richard said hastily. This was America, it rarely did one well to offend someone. Especially if the person in question was a powerful mutant.
"I only ask as I do molecular manipulation with metals, plastics you know inorganics, and stuff like that." Richard preferred that abbreviated explanation of his powers, it was considerably harder to explain that he could touch a mechanism and understand its workings, strengths and weaknesses.
>"...Is the New York zoo close by? I'd love to go there and see the animals. Would you be okay with that?"
Richard smiled, way to go Derek, he though for breaking any awkwardness. He had a feeling that he and Derek would get along just fine. It would be good to make friends. His only ones in NY being Margo his surrogate little sister and Gina, the amazing and rather cute flying gargoyle. There was always room for more, especially as he was waiting to hear back from job applications and doing contract work here and there for individual clients.
"You know" began Richard with a smile. "I have been in NY for more than 2 years and I have never once been to the Zoo, dreadful I know. And at the moment I am completely out of excuses not to do so. So lead on my good man and let us allow google maps to guide us."
This was hopefully the beginning of a wonderful afternoon. He clapped a hand on Derek's shoulder and they headed out the main entrance of the apartment.

>"Hey, Richard. It's nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too." It was always nice to meet someone who was polite. Derek seemed to listen attentively as Richard gave the standard tour. When he was at university he worked as a research assistant for 3 years. When your laboratory has glass windows and cool fast moving robots in them and is right above the building's Starbucks, you get used to giving tours to every one from squealing children who try to compare wielding robots to the transformers, to high-school children to people of all ages. Richard only hoped that he was not boring Derek. Though from the amount of smiling, the brightness of his eyes and the appreciative noises/comments that Derek was making, Richard suspected he was looking at his next apartment-mate.
>"It's really amazing here. How much is the rent?"
"I am finding it amazing so far as well. I only recently moved in here." Explained Richard.
"As for Rent...." Richard mentioned a price that was surprisingly affordable for the size of the rooms, the service and where the apartment was located in New York.
"...So I am certainly not complaining."
Richard smiled. The tour had not taken very long, it was now about half past five and Richard certainly had not other plans for the evening.
"So.... what would you like to do?" Richard asked. He asked it open-ended like. If Derek wanted, he would be more than happy to chill and get to know someone new, especially if he might be living in close proximity soon. On the other hand, Richard had asked the question in such a way that Derek could just as easily mention that he had something to do and the two men could part ways in a most amicable fashion.

>"Oo, welcome to co-op, then!"
If Richard suspected that Gina was a little down before, the way that her face brightened up confirmed it. He would also guess that she was something of an extrovert.
>"Moved-in about this time last year. There's quite a few residents who've been here longer, but I've been around longest out of my floor. Most of my roomies are relatively new."
"Why thank you Gina" Said Richard. "How have you found it after living here for a year? How are things here?"
Asked Richard as he settled into a chair opposite her. If she had been here a year should would know what it was really like and perhaps not see everything through rose tinted glasses. Besides, Richard found that he liked Ginas voice, it was rather cute and soothing. Not that he would ever admit this, no, never.
>"So, are you a mutant? Or mutant-friendly?"
Richard sat back a little, startled. Growing up in a Chinese society, anything that was out of the norm was frowned upon. It never ended well for mutants. He was still not completely comfortable with obvious displays of power. Perhaps that was why he found Gina rather fascinating. Here was a mutant, a rather charming one at that, who was obviously a mutant, yet was fully confident and unashamed of who she was. He would like to have that confidence. Richard realized that he was not answered her question. He started back to reality.
"Sorry, where I grew up things did not go well for you if people knew you were a mutant." He said his head drooping slight. He paused for a moment, thinking to himself. a smile spreading across his face, why not. Turning back to Gina, he continued.
"Am I a mutant? Hmmm" He put a finger to his lips, yes it could be done. "Could I ask you a favor? Would you mind just holding that pose for a moment?"
His face turned serious and he looked at Gina while blinking rapidly, almost as if he was scanning or measuring. After a moment he stopped. "Thank you."
He fumbled in his pocket can came out holding a piece of brass. He always carried small off cut pieces of metal with him. One never knew when inspiration would strike.
"This may take a minute" He murmured as he took a seat opposite Gina. The small brass rectangular block in his hand. He closed his eyes, smiling as he did so. He always loved this part. There was a slight look of boyish joy and delight that showed, not that he was aware of it.
The brass block sat on the flat of his hand, nothing happened at first and then from the top of the block down the materials started to flow. Richard was in his element, it was always more energy efficient to moult metal instead of trying to break the bods entirely, especially on a molecular level. it was like from the top of the block, the material started melting, flowing downwards, yet some of the material remained and was taking on a definite shape. First there were the horns then what looked like a mess of curls then the oval, and if Richard was pressed he would have to admit rather attractive, face. then the top of the wings and so on. Molding was so much easier as Richard could only manipulate a small amount of material, it had grown from a teaspoon to a tablespoon in volume but still it was a challenge. In a few minutes a exact replica of Gina sitting on her chair was sitting in his hand, in brass.
With a cheeky smile, he left a thin rectangle of brass as base and embossed the word "Gina" on one side as well as a tiny cursive "R" on the base. Richard opened his eyes and had to steady himself against the arm of his chair.
"Sorry, changing perspectives, always a little disorienting." He said apologetically.
He took a moment to gather himself then held out the sculpture. "Here you go" He said grinning. He mopped the slight perspiration from his forehead. He was used to nudging micro circuitry into place not sculpting.

Wow, Richard had barely moved in to the co-op apartment and already they wanted him to show a prospective tenant around? Wow, talk about sticking it to the new guy.
Richard walked down to the lobby, he was early, but apparently not early enough, if the person standing between the two sets of doors, trying to look natural, was the prospective tenant. The man looked to be in hie early twenties. He looked easy going and friendly.
Richard took a beep breath and tried to project confidence, confidence that he only partially had. He had recently gotten back, was still reeling from the curve balls that life had thrown at him and only recently moved in.
He opened the inner doors and gestured for the man to enter.
"Derek? Hi, I am Richard, I believe I am supposed to show you around?"
Well that did not count out as confident as he hopped. Oh well.
Richard launced into the standard spiel about the appartment as they started walking.

They were definitely wings! Richard was still getting used to the fact that mutations did not have to be hidden. Growing up in Hong Kong, any overt hint of mutation.... he inwardly shuddered, it never ended well for the mutant. The lady turned her gaze towards him, Her eyes seemed to glow and sparkle.
>"Gina. I live on the fourth floor. Nice to meet you."
Richard accepted the proffered hand, Her skin, he noted absent minded-ly was dappled and gray, it felt cool, smooth and almost scaly in parts. He handshake was firm and warm. He was feeling more welcomed already. Her voice was soothing, he liked it.
"I just moved into the third floor. this is actually my second night here." Richard admitted. "Have you lived here long?"
>"Beautiful night."
Richard looked up at the sky and let out a happy sigh. He nodded as he spoke.
"That it is, that it is."
The starts were shining brightly tonight. The streets quiet. It was...peaceful. Richard needed ... peaceful after what he had just been through.

It was good to be back in the city of New York. What was that song from the movie "Friends with Benefits"? "something something... New Yorrrrrk". But as much as Richard liked the city, there was just nothing that could compare with the outdoors. Hills covered with green, the smell of the trees, the damp earth after a rain, the calming sounds of a river rushing along its path, the cooling, refreshing spray from a waterfall. Against these things, no city could compete.
It was Richards suggestion. He was more than slightly mortified when he realised taht it had been almost a year since he had last seen Margo. The last time they had gone on a brother sister date, Richard had rented a car (it had cost him the mother of all favors, but it was worth it). It has been a wonderful evening, but still a year.
Margo had texted him and he had immediately suggested an outing, somewhere they could unplug from their lives. He had been so caught up with work and family affairs and she, according to her texts, had just finished school. So he had proposed a hike in the mountains and could practically hear the excited squeal that always made him smile as she agreed.
They reached a waterfall and Richard smiled as he heard Margo exclaim
>"Wow".
"And that is why I love the outdoors." Richard said smiling.
He came up behind her and gave her a strong bear hug.
"Oh I have missed you Margo. I have missed you so much."
He spun them around gently. Then held her at arms length to get a good look at her.

Hades
Richard was mulling, processing through the many many changes that he had gone through. First the family tragedy, the passing of his grandmother. He was out of town for a while helping and supporting his family and extended family through it all. Before he left his employer agreed to put his employment on hold but a place would be kept for him when he returned.
A few months later he was promptly informed that his job had been "terminated". That had come as a shock. Richard loved his work, it engaged his creativity, it challenged him and gave space for his mutation to work. It was almost perfect. Annnnnd it had come crashing down. Richard shrugged his shoulders, things happened. Then the cascading effects of unemployment kicked in. He had to terminate the rental contract on his house and move out. While still trying to help family. Finally after many nights of desperate frantic searching and more than a few evening sleeping on the couches of friends Richard had found a place that he could afford, for now. He thought darkly. He had some savings, though that had been whittled down by the travelling. He was still applying for work but with little success.
Richard sat mulling over this on the stone wall that surrounded the back patio. He had his headphones on and was sitting somewhat in shadows observing the world around him. He fixed the image in his mind then went to work.
Richard always found using his powers relaxing. Concentrating on the image fixed in his mind he pulled off his gloves and touches the stone beneath him. Little by little he began "drawing" on the surface of the stone. He was recreating, or at least trying to, the building opposite, the cars parked on the street everything, in isometric view. Twenty minutes later, he opened his eyes and proceeded to place a piece of sketch paper over it and began to lightly brush it with a pencil.
He got up to look at it in the light and took of his headphones. He was halfway across the backyard before he realized that there was music playing and there was someone else there. Clutching the rubbing almost guilty he called out.
"Sorry did not see you there. Hi, I am Richard" He extended his hand. Wait were those wings?
