The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

She nodded a little, and smiled a very small, devious smile. "Can't go trading a bunch of hideous pink supplies with the cool kids at school, can she?" The math club comment gave her pause, and she blinked at him with a puzzled expression on her face. She dropped whatever thoughts she had a moment later in order to nibbled on another french fry.
She didn't notice Saph's discomfort right at first, not until the suits had closed in on them. When he moved to shield her, slight panic had started to settle in.
And honestly, their explanation didn't help it abate at all. Not even a little.
"We're not on a date." She muttered, eyes shifting between all the faces present.
"Perfect!" One of them snatched up one of her hands and while they were looping Saph into an agreement of his own, she was being drown in words.
"-nothing to it, really! So much fun too!" The guy stopped to breath, a smile fixed in place even as nervous sweat poured down his forehead." He was already shaking her hand, and a contract of some sort was being shoved towards. "W-wait... I-i..."
"You will do it right? Man, I'm in such a spot here. It would be so kind of you to agree! Ever so helpful!"
A minute later she was being escorted to where the mobile game show was being held. A small crew of make up artists flocked out of nowhere, bee-lining toward her and Saph. Shelby was in way over her head, and as the group of over zealous workers dragged them off in separate directions she shot a wild, wide eyed look in the x-man's direction.
"Ooh, I like the natural look on her. We should accentuate that." One woman gushed, while making quick work of getting her hair out of the sloppy bun. "Yes! Brilliant! Just a little mascara, some blush to make those cheek bones pop. Hmm.."
Someone wheeled out a rack jam packed with outfits, and as soon as they were done slapping a few adjustments onto her face she was hurried into a curtained off dressing room.
A man who she could only describe as eccentric tossed an armful of clothing through the curtain and commanded her to change. A few moments later, Shelby reluctantly stepped back out, now clad in some sort of beetle print blouse and a loose fitting pencil skirt. Someone quickly approached to pin the sides of her hair back, and then she was suddenly escorted away to a different area. She could hear a small murmuring crowd somewhere out there on the other side of the curtains, and the sound of a mic turning on.
"Alright, Jim. We all set?" Another murmur, then "Okay! Lets get started!"
A pause, and then the into music played. She could hear cheering. Her anxiety doubled.
"Hello, and welcome to another exciting edition of Love Quest! The only show out there that travels to a different city every episode! This week we are in beautiful New York City!" More cheering. "I'm your host, Jordon Hauferson! Today we are going to be helping one lucky girl find the love of her life. We have six bachelors ready and waiting to meet her, so... lets get started, shall we?" Louder cheering. "Heidi Wells, come on out!"
A woman with a headset and a clip board shooed her gently out onto the stage. She wandered out casually, trying her best not to look like a deer in headlights. The host, Jordon, joined her and guided her over to a chair in the middle of the stage. The back of the chair was tall and wide, hiding her from view for when the other contestants came out on stage.
"Welcome Heidi, now, let me explain the rules a bit. You will have a list of questions you can ask the contestants, and after each question you can rate which answer you liked the best." He gestures to a little table in front of her, attached to her chair. It had six spots, each with a red button. She assumed that would be how she assigned the points.
"As we get further and further into the questions, the contestants will be weeded out based on their lowest scores." The crowed cheered for that, and she got the feeling that there was more to this than just scores and points. "Now, lets get Started! Contestants, come on out!"
The lights dimmed a little, and spotlights turned to focus on the entrance they would come through.
She took the card hesitantly, eyeballing it with a pinched expression. Dammit, she hated holding onto other peoples stuff. What if she lost it? She barely had enough in her account to cover the paint she was about to buy. "No, that's fine. I can do that." She tugged out her own wallet, making sure to put his card somewhere safe, and awkwardly waited until he made to move before she started on her own path.
It didn't take her long to track down almost all of the supplies. She had all of the basics, the necessities, and was currently stuck trying to decipher which kind of calculator was the best. "...yes, but do you have one that comes in pink?"
The clerk helping her in the electronics section stared, before nodding and leading her to a different spot in the aisle. "Sure do! I bet your... daughter will love it?" She flashed a small strained smile and plucked the calculator off the shelf, adding it to her basket.
With a critical eye, she surveyed all of the items she had gotten so far. The bottom of her basket was a chaotic pile of glitter pink, rainbows, and as many pony themed items she could find. She nodded in satisfaction, and headed to checkout.
A few minutes later she was in the food court, nibbling on a fry as she poked through the contents of the teenagers phone. The text were... well... interesting, to say the least. Some of it almost seemed coded, like her few friends were talking to her in some secret fashion. She highly doubted that they were really always going to 'Math club' and 'Drama' after school... and she was pretty sure that the foods they were talking about were code words too.
As if on cue, the phone bleeped and a text came in. It seemed it was from Saph.
'At the food court.' She sent back, crossing one leg under her as she adjusted in her seat. She considered mentioning his daughters 'friends' but decided against it. She didn't want him thinking she was a regular snoop, anyway. When she saw him a few minutes later, all freshly trimmed up, she waved him over and scooted the bags towards him with her foot as she fished his card back out or her wallet and returned it to him. "Got everything she should need."
Blinking, she slowly shook her head. "Nope, I slid it back across the counter to you after I finished editing it. Sorry, perhaps I should have held onto it." She paused, awkwardly shifting, "But that's okay. I know what most of the things of the list are. High school supplies are pretty simple compared to what i'm used to." She attempted a small reassuring smile.
"I dunno about the haircut. It really depends on what you need it for I guess." She eyed him, critical of his slight shagginess. "Unless you are going for a younger look, a trim is all you really need in my opinion. Your not full on mountain man, yet."
She turned, starting towards the mall entrance. "If you like, I can gather the supplies for you and you can meet me after you get a trim?"
She nodded, adjusting her glasses with one hand as she followed him. "Har har." she replied dryly, half rolling her eyes at the eye comment. "Lets all make jokes about the poor college student, shall we?"
Still, it was nice to have a normal conversation. Or at least a semi normal one. The ride passed quickly, and relatively quietly. She appreciated that in some ways. He wasn't trying to awkwardly get her to talk or fill the silence.
Jen would have done the same.
"Any idea where to go first? I admit I'm still new to this whole thing... I adopted Elke a couple years back. Rough past, that kid, But I saw a lot of myself in her."
She hrmed, stepping around the vehicle. "You're in luck, I have been here shopping for my own supplies before. I know where to go for most things."
She paused then, blinking and turning to look at him. "You grabbed the note pad, right?"
I have a creepy story to share. Two of my classmates from this year have totally vanished. As in their apartment is empty, barren. The building even has the apartment closed off. No one knows what happened to them, just that one day they were there, and the next they were gone. I know that one of them had some kinda connection to that mutant school. Wrote about it in her beginning year. I mean, i'm not saying that the x-men are bad.... buuuut...

PugsNotDrugs:
Duuuude ive heard this theory before! I mean, like, I would totally peg the government for it. Totally. Why else would a mutant attack another mutant? They all supposed to get along, right? Creepy, Bro.
Shelby wisely chose to stay out that that conversation. Instead she finished what she thought would be an appropriate list, and pushed it back across the counter towards Saph.
Elke didn't seem phased by being outed, nor did she seem at all worried about the fact that she apparently had a 'boy' on the side, and her dad had just fund out. "What?" She huffed, crossing her arms over her chest, "I have a lot of guy friends at school who let me borrow stuff."
She paused, almost as if she were waiting for it to sink in, and then added with a sly little grin, "Almost all of them owe me a shit ton of favors, anyway. No biggie."
At being scolded by her dad, she rolled her eyes hard enough to make all teenagers proud, and stood from her stool. "Fine! Whatever! I don't know why I have have to go to this stupid school for losers anyway!" And with that, she stomped out of the kitchen.
Shebly watched her go, keeping her lips pursed in order not to say anything. Or laugh.
The expression she turned back to Saph with was one of barely constrained mirth, to the point that her cheeks had started to redden a little.
"Well..." She said, after a beat. "I'm ready when you are ready."
Excusing herself quietly, she took her coffee with her to her room to change. It didn't take long, she just needed to put some actual pants on, a non-destroyed shirt, and a baggy button up sweater over the top. She didn't even touch her hair, and makeup was out of the question. There was no point if she was just going to have to battle being a sloppy, sobbing mess all day long.
Snagging her makeshift wallet, with the temporary ID and the cash card her bank had been willing to send her, she locked her door and headed back down. Now fully clothes and feeling more put together, minus the fact that she had forgotten about the paint brush still lingering in her hair.
"Alright, i'm all set." She set her half empty coffee cup on the counter and folded her hands on the smooth surface. "...mind if I look at your list?"
Elke, who had yet to move, sneered at her and she slid the paper pad over to her. Shelby took it gingerly, paying the teen no attention. "Gonna grade my homework while you are at it?"
She frowned at the list and sighed quietly. "Well, guess it's a good thing i'm going." Reaching over she snatched the pen Elke had been using and began marking off items left an right. "Don't think I ever needed rubber bands in school. Or that many paperclips." The teen protested, but Shelby shifted out of her reach. "Nor is there really a use for that variety of permanent markers. You generally only need red and black."
Half of the list was gone by the time she was through, and she began adding in items she recalled being useful to her in her more resent courses.
"Gonna need a pretty good calculator for your grade. Do you have one?" She pinned a questioning eye on the girl, completely ignoring the infuriated glare she was currently being given. Elke shifted her glare between Shelby and Saph, before huffing and throwing her hands in the air. "No! I traded mine last year for a really cool pair of sneakers." She paused, then added in, "but it's okay. I've been borrowing this guy;s calculator for all of my math classes. I'm good."
Silently, Shelby glanced at Saph and scribbled 'calculator' onto the list.
The corner of one lip upturned slightly in amusement. The father daughter relationship they seemingly had was interesting, to say the least. Especially when the teenager in question waited for him to look away before flipping him the bird.
"I'm sure we were all in a stage like that, once." And then a much more subtle, under the counter bird was angled her way. Her smile widened softly, just a tad. After his explanation, she glanced away. She wanted to decline. To just go right back up to her room and shut the door and pretend that real life didn't exist some more. She knew that such an action wasn't generally viewed as healthy, and that she was expected to pick herself up and get on with life.
Keeping a very carefully neutral expression on her face, she weighed her options. Say no and have him pester and worry about her more, or say yes and have to work to keep her emotions in check all day.
"Sure, I guess it couldn't hurt. I'm in dire need of new paint, anyway." She nodded to his offer of coffee, heading a little closer to the counter to accept the offered cup of joe.
"I will probably need to change, before we go though. I don't normally allow people to see my in my work clothes."
Saph was in the kitchen, as it turned out. She raised lazy hand to wave at him in greeting, all while angling an eyebrow up in question. "Thanks Elke. Hey Shelby... Thanks for coming out. Elke tell you what's up?"
"yeah, yeah. Whatever. " The teen trudged over an sat down on a stool next to the counter, reaching to grab the list that Saph had been working on. She had a few things she wanted to sneak onto it.
Shelby watched the interaction with a carefully neutral expression, content to stand in the doorway and not intrude further on whatever... this... was. "Apparently i'm her mom now." She chipped in, a sliver of humor in her voice. Too her credit, the teen didn't even flinch at the mention of what she had said.
The last 72 hours had been hard for her, for sure. She spent the first night curled up in her new bed, weeping uncontrollably. The next day was spent locked in her room attempting to come to terms. The day after that she ha allowed herself to get busy pushing her meager belongings around. The few times that she had been able to recover from her old apartment, items that had been cleared by the investigative team as safe to remove; Her easel, some clothes, a few basic hygiene necessitates.
She had her room in order, sparse... yet functional. Her work space was set up by the only window in the room, which overlooked a parking lot outside. It was better than no window, though.
She had just slipped on a throw away, paint splattered t-shirt and sat down on the small metal stool to start a fresh piece, when she heard a knock at her door. With her hair sloppily thrown into a bun, and her glasses slipped down to the tip of her nose, she turned and blinked at the door. Who...?
After making her way over, with the paintbrush she had been using wedged into her hair, she cracked the door open and peered out. A teenager stared blankly back at her. Puzzled, Shelby opened the door further. "Can I help you?"
The girl gave her a slow once over, clearly unimpressed for some reason. "...So, what... you my new mom? My dad sent me to get you."
Shelby blanched, brows screwing together in confusion. "Wh-...pardon?"
The girl sighed, as if her question had been unbearably stupid. "Saph? Duh. You coming or what?"
Under her breath she heard the kid mutter something gruffly, and blinked again. Saph, she knew at least. He had checked in on her a few times. This kid she had never met... but.. "...Okay, sure."
Stepping back inside real quick, she grabbed the bungee cord that held her room key. After locking her door, she turned to follow the girl, fidgeting with the cuff of her shorts. Elke huffed, stuffed her hands in her pockets, and turned to lead them back the way she had come.
Shelby was suddenly, acutely aware that she wasn't in fact alone. For a bit there, it had felt like she was. Like all of the light in the world had been sucked away and all that was left was crushing sadness, fear, and... anger.
The his voice drew her back, a movement of shadow in the corner of her eye. She lifted her head slowly, staring at him wide eyed as he spoke. The words...they didn't register at first. But gradually she became aware enough to understand. They were gone. He needed the phone. She let him take it without a fight. There was no reason to have it now... and potentially it might do some good in the future.
He gripped her shoulders and she drew herself up a little more, schooling her expression into a blank mask. No one needed to see how defeated she was. How crushing the whole ordeal had been. How... damaged she felt.
"I have a place you can go. It's safe. We can keep you there until we find out what we can do to help you out, okay?"
Unblinking, she watched him. She saw the sincerity in his expression. In his words. Really, he truly meant what he said. She didn't doubt that under different circumstances he would surely keep his word. But... she also felt that she was more of less a lost cause now. She had a target painted on her back; one she may have put there herself, and from what she could gather from within such a very short amount of time, it was a very big target painted by a very dangerous person. Her faith in the system had been rocked. Decimated, really. How could they protect her from someone so evil? Someone that vile and impossible to reach? He would simply take what he wanted, and damn the consequences.
There was no help for her. Nowhere was safe. She was better off turning herself in to him and getting it over with, or offing herself before he could get his hands on her.
She managed a small smile for him, still dead behind the eyes, "Thank you." And she allowed him to lead her from the room.
"Now, don't tattle on me, I do know you enjoy doing that, but I told this gentleman that the only way you would see Jen alive was if he let me talk to you. Wasn't that a nice little lie. Anyway, here's Jen."
That voice... it sent a shiver up her spine that was violent enough to cause her whole body to shake. She didn't speak to him at first, honestly she didn't want too... but after what he had just said she couldn't keep her mouth shut any longer. "No, you-!" Background noise cut her off. She started pacing back and forth in the room, nervously chewing on her thumb. She still had hope, she still had to believe...
"SHELL! SHELL HELP ME."
"Jen! Jen i'm right here! Jen, we're going to find you! I'll find you!!" She could hear her friend weeping, deep, pained weeping. "JENNIFER!"
"SHELL... SHELL I'M SO SORRY.....Shell... This is... This is all your fault... Thi-HRK"
"Jennifer!? Jenny! NO!! JENNIFER!" Her cries wouldn't drown out the sound. She couldn't' get through... And that... laughter. She was holding the phone out in front of her at this point, practically screaming at it. Her thumb slid over the speaker button on accident, just in time for Roach to get his last words in.
"SHELL! I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOUR ART"
Communication went dead. The line cutoff. Silence filled the room, save for the sound of her own frantic breathing. She stared blankly at the phone in her hands, eyes tracing the phone number over and over again. Then, she hit the call button and brought it back up to her ear.
The semi was parked out front, they had only been here a few minutes.. there was no way they could have gotten very far away from the apartment that fast. It didn't even ring. Straight to voice mail. She hung up and tried again; same result.
The glowing numbers on the phone blurred. Tears gathered and slid in gloopy rivers down her cheeks. She didn't know what to say... to do... where to go from here. Jenny.. was dead. That monster had killed her, and there hadn't been anything she could do about it.
"wish I could have done more." She muttered, wringing her hands together. As they pulled in, she knew that something wasn't right. It didn't help that her cop... hero... whatever he was, had all but flown out of the car as soon as they were parked.
"26! Apartment 26!" she hollered, following as close behind him as she could. That pit; the sick, heavy, turbulent thing that had started to diminish was suddenly back and had grown tenfold. The journey up seemed to take forever. Too long... and yet, when they got there, she wished she hadn't come at all.
The door to her shared apartment was wide open. The lights were on, but flickering. That was common, their lights had been crappy since the day she had moved in. There were a few things knocked to the floor.. the small entrance desk next to the door was angled out into the hallway, like something had snagged one of the legs on the way out.
There were blankets on the floor, and that stupid sleeping mask that Jen wore every night to block out light was sitting smack in the middle of the hallway floor. Shelby felt her stomach turn and braced herself against the wall with a hand. The other moved to cover her mouth, either to try and keep her from throwing up, or to stifle the sobs she felt coming on. She didn't know which.
Her temporary companion moved further into the room, and then she noticed the chair. Her phone. She couldn't contain a gasping sob, then. When the phone rang she near jumped out of her skin. She listened intently to what was being said, that sick feeling growing worse and worse and time went on.
Then he turned and held out the phone to her. Her eyes dropped to the number, Jen's number, and her vision blurred with tears. With a shaking hand, she reached out and gently took the phone.
She had answered? Oh, thank the gods. All of them. she wasn't going to be picky right now. "That's good, that's really really good." The news that they had spoken to her was honestly relieving. "Yeah, should be right around the corner up here. Big building on the left."
In the meantime, she greedily snatched the small computer away from him. It took her half a second to find here she could access the internet, and half a second more in order to find the site and log in. Immediately the pit in her stomach grew. She knew that she had taken a crap ton of pictures, but what greeted her was only a dozen or so.
"F%$#!" Furiously, she set about scrolling through and starting downloads on any and all pictures she thought could be used. Even if it was blurry, or a badly angled shot. She absently noted that most of the pictures of the bugman himself were already gone. She snagged one very blurry photo of him; probably the first, with what looked like a very blurry weapon slung over his shoulder. She managed to snag a few pictures of the first guy who had held her captive. The one who had tried to smother her, and there was a picture and a half (one was very sloppy) of one of the other man. The one who had taunted her with her own camera. Ironically, one of the best pictures happened to be from him.
"He's already in... most of the pictures are gone." She cursed again under her breath, watching anxiously as the pictures she had chosen were confirmed for download. "..I... I got a few though. Some from the guys right at first, and... and a really poor quality one of the 'Roach' guy."
With a frustrated sigh, she watched the last photo file she had taken vanish, confirmed that the pictures she had chosen were really fully downloaded, and moved to hand him the com back. They were approaching the apartments anyway, she didn't need it distracting her now.
