Character
Personality: First of all, she doesn't like people. Let me just put that out there right in the forefront for everyone. She hates talking, hates social gatherings, and loathes people she doesn't know intimately touching her (because they do, for some damn reason.) That being said though, she doesn't mind faking her way through just about anything. Just don't expect her not to gripe about it afterward.
Shelby is one of those borderline hermits floating around out there. She'd rather stay inside where it's warm and quiet than have to deal with douches in Hondas or handsy old women who feel the need to grab her elbow when they are talking at her. She does enjoy good friends, however, and will willingly, if begrudgingly, make time in her schedule to hang with them. Given her barely concealed spite for humanity, she still manages to be surprisingly kind and thoughtful at times. Whether that's offering to help someone with someone heavy, holding a door open for someone, or awkwardly sticking around injured people just in case someone may need her help, she's game for it.... sometimes.
She has an odd sense of humor, to say the least, and half the time can't tell if what is about to leave her mouth may cause a roomful of people to bust a gut laughing, or if it will incite a raging mob to chase her out of town with pitchforks. So, sometimes she awkwardly swallows whole strings to sentences she was about to say, presumably replacing it with something very lame.
Hobbies/ Interests: Art, animals, good movies (
Good movies.), nature.
Job or part-time job and description: Currently stringing her way through a degree in art, though she isn't sure that counts as a job, but it sure feels like it.
Fears/ phobias/ concerns: Needles, suffocation, being crushed to death, and motherflippin monkeys, man. I mean, really, have you ever seen one? Terror incarnate.
Bears.Special talents: She'd argue that she has none, but she's okay in a lot of things. Art things specifically. She can lick her nose, though.
Morality: In her head, she sees herself as a moral-mess. She doesn't care for people all that much, likes cats and dogs much much more, and wishes death upon people for inane reasons at least five hundred times a day. But, she'd never come out in the open and say that to someones face, unless she knew that person very, very well. It doesn't help that her opinions vary almost hourly, so something she was harping against a moment ago, she may be praising five minutes from now. In general, she's a decent person though.
Good/ bad/ neutral/ other: Er.... somewhere in between? I mean, she wouldn't just stab someone, but she's probably thinking about it.
Mutations
Mutation description: After twenty-nine six of life, suddenly a latent gene she never knew she carried has activated. With its sudden appearance, forces within her body have started to shift... They are changing slowly, and though she is not aware of it, and though there is no physical appearance of the change from the outside, it won't be long until she is aware of the unique new traits she has been handed.
Shelby has always been artistic. She's always been able to visualize something with her mind's eye and put it on paper with relative accuracy. Now, with the appearance of this strange new mutation, her creations are born into reality with a little life of their own. In a small place beyond the canvas, a small space has appeared. It is disconnected from everything save from Shelby herself. Effectively she places a portion of herself within the piece of art and forms her work inside of it. This means that if she were to sit down with the intention of painting a still life within her own room, inside that little space she created would be a replica of everything she included in the painting. The appearance and function of these items would be based on her interpretation of them. So, if she were to pour a lot of detail into a painting of a vase and flowers, there would be a very detailed vase and flowers in that alternate space. Similarly, if she went for a more abstract image, the items she created would be presented in an abstract style.
One other unique facet of her energy being used to create the space and everything within it is that the mood she has chosen for the piece greatly affects the space within the painting. For example: If she were to create a very depressing cafe scene and all of the feelings she chose for that piece were reflections of sadness, within that space those feelings would be reflected back at her by the items around her. However, if she were to paint a picture of a smiling young teen, and then visit the space that created teen occupied, the general feeling would be positive and upbeat.
Now, as mentioned above, with her connection to this space given that it is made up of her essence, or energy, she is able to use the physical body of work she has created as a portal to visit the new space within the painting. To do this she must come in physical contact with the item. The physical connection forms a portal, which lets her appear within the space that she has created. She is also able to bring others in with her, so long as they are in direct physical contact with some part of her.
Once inside the "space", there is a portal back out. The areas that she can create are basically largish boxes, depending on how much space was painted in, and how much detail was given. There are three area walls where space can be created, and one flat, black wall with the portal home. (This is due to the artist being unable to paint the fourth wall, which is the physical surface of the camera. She could get around this by painting with the perspective being from above, but in that respect, the portal home would end up on the "ceiling")
Once inside the space, the only way out is through the gateway. If Shelby herself does not physically escort guests out and loses contact with them at some point during the tour, there is a 15-minute time limit before they are forcibly ejected from the painting itself, due to not being in contact with her energy.
From the outside in the real world, the painting looks normal. However, if you were looking for them you would be able to spot the new figures added into the painting. There is no movement from people within the painting space on the outside. Similarly, from the inside, the painting that acts as the portal back out to the real world simply looks like a snapshot or a still life. People within the painting can't spy on or listen to anyone outside the painting or even know they are there until they leave again. And lastly, when entering a painting space the representation left on the canvas outside matches the style it was painted in, while on the inside visitors retain a realistic for that type will not match the style of the space.
A very keen eye would be able to spot her while she is in most paintings. If it were a very simple painting she would probably be fairly large and noticeable on the canvas. If it were a very large, detailed painting with many small objects, it would probably be like trying to find Waldo... but you could still do it. Some paintings would be more obvious than others as well.. For example, in a renaissance style painting, she would appear in modern clothing and with glasses.
Strengths: There are a lot of unique strengths to this power. For instance, should she want to she would have the opportunity to create a lot of creatures and objects and interact with her versions of them She could meet face value versions of great people if she wanted too, or just take a leisurely stroll around a fake forest... If there was a painting available nearby and she was in danger, she would be able to escape into it until help could arrive or the danger passed. If she was really mad at someone, she could also conceivably leave them locked in a painting for 15 minutes, should one be nearby and she was able to make physical contact with both the person and the painting.
Lastly, there is the possibility that she could create more spaces within spaces she is currently visiting. The problem with this is that the further she moves away from reality, the more likely it becomes that she may get lost within her alternate spaces. The only way out to the real world is through that first portal.
Weaknesses and Limitations: The scope of emotions and personality is very limited. She may be able to create mostly accurate representations of them, but she wouldn't be able to find out unknown information or grill people for juicy gossip. Her creations are based off of her own knowledge of the subject, and the feelings she wanted to implant within them.
Also, objects and people created within her painting spaces aren't able to travel outside of them. She wouldn't be able to make something, and then bring it out into the real world. Any attempts of the sort would end up in large globs of paint on the floors and herself, as the objects return to their natural form when hit with reality.
Her creative ability and use of her own personal portals are reliant on her own physical energy. Under normal circumstances she has no trouble moving back and forth between spaces, or creating new artwork... but if her body's energy dips too low (sickness, exhaustion, ect.) she has a harder time accessing her spaces, and creating new ones. Opening portals and creating spaces takes longer.
Also, she is not able to access multiple spaces at the same time. Not only would this be physically impossible, but it would also consume a lot of energy. She would most likely default to the space she was more in contact with, or more than likely nothing would happen at all.
Power Growth 4/26/2020
Shelby has gained the ability to use her own energy to "unlock" artwork she did not create herself for use with her power. Instead of having to manually put energy into a piece, any art within a 200 ft radius around her will automatically be imbued with her energy. Upon touching a piece that has her energy attached to it she is able to enter it’s ‘space’ and visit the scene in that specific painting.
Due to the radius that her energy can reach, once she is within a space she will find more entrance doors to other works of art that are within her range of energy. She can hop from one painting into another, and out through a different painting than she entered.
The types of art that she can effectively create a ‘space’ for with her energy and thus enter need to be still (can’t jump into moving or active forms of art) and need to be contained within some type of boundary. A picture in a frame, a mural on a wall, etc.
Entering into foreign forms of art leaves her at a disadvantage of not knowing what the intent behind the piece was. She won’t know if that space will be hostile, or calm.
She also has no idea what will be on the other end when she pops out as she travels from one world to another.
Physical Abilities
General Physical Capabilities: She's average across the board. Not strong, but not weak. Not fast, but doesn't have to stop for a breather when crossing her living room. Throw something at her face and there is a 75% chance it will hit, and a 25% chance she will snatch it from the air like a ninja and look like a total badass.
Fighting Style: This one's hard... see, she's never actually been in a fight. Sure, she's been picked on once or twice, but apparently a quiet ginger kid's stare is enough to dissuade most bullies from pushing the issue. Still, she likes to imagine that if anyone got up in her face she'd be able to at least defend herself, if not lay the asswhoopin' of a lifetime on them. People can dream, can't they?
... Unless it's one of those dreams where you move really slowly, and someone or something is always trying to kill you, but you can't run or punch any faster than perma-slow mo. F#$k those dreams.
Fighting Style Pros/Cons: Some people would say she's a smidge unpredictable. Others would laugh and break her nose.
History Of Your Character
You know those average, boring lives people always moan about? Shelby Walters was perfectly content to have one. Grew up with a working mom and dad, played in the dirt with boys, spent the bulk of her school years hiding in her room with her nose in a book about dragons. Yep. Boringly normal. Really, she prefers it that way. What kind of nut gets up in the morning with a hankering for bacon and JUSTICE? Or puts his pants on one leg at a time, while dangling off the side of a building with a strand of floss as his lifeline? A nut, that's who. Someone who answered inane questions about life with deep philosophical debate, rather than 'Oh, i'm fine thank you.'
For Shelby, the redefining moment of her life came when she graduated high school and set about enrolling in college. Not a fancy college, mind you, one of them colleges that offers 'underwater basket weaving' as a degree. Yeah, that kinda school. She moved out into the available student housing, got a roommate who was stereo-typically annoying, and clawed her way though classes with student aid that she had just barely qualified for. Who knew being a ginger was a thing they paid you for nowadays, huh?
Anyway, she took a break halfway through her degree in order to scrounge for some cash with a part-time job, but has since quit and (obviously) transferred to a new school. Why? Apparently fine art is a thing in New York, and if you are going to study it you may as well study the good stuff. AmIright.
One thing she didn't plan into her grand scheme of things though, was all of the people. She'd thought Seattle was bad, what with it's million starbucks' and equal about of hipsters.. but Jeeeesus.
Roleplay
Where did you learn about this site?: Saph~
Do you have any other characters on MRO, if so who: Andrea, Megan, and Elke
Sample RP:...Was this a thing now? Was this seriously a thing? Oh, sure, her home state had it's own share of crazies, but this... this stole the whole damn cake.
Above her, and a crowded city street's worth of other folk, was a man clad in spandex so form fitting she was sure she could see every hair on his body. A cape billowed out behind him as he stood on the ledge of a seven story rise and bellowed threateningly at people down below. Oh, and they weren't heroic things either. He was basically just pointing out jaywalkers, bad drivers, and bicyclists and throwing numerous expletives into his ramblings.
Like a good little sheepel, Shelby fished out her phone and started filming the whole escapade, because surely no one back home was going to believe what she was witnessing. It was worse than watching a drunk man slurring terrible pickup lines at a poster on the wall outside of a bar. Sirens picked up suddenly in the distance, and with a huff she switched her phone off and slipped it back into her pocket. It was time to go; before the cops showed up and the super-dude decided to try and fly, and everyone lost their shit. She didn't really feel like being trampled today. The guy's shouting echoed hauntingly in her ears as she shoved her way out of the crowd, something about everyone needing a permit to take pictures of him, which they clearly didn't have, and how the internet was a terribly evil place.
On that, at least, he was right.
