The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

To her credit, she didn't laugh. She could have, it was pretty amusing, but she didn't. She just smiled pleasantly back at him like there wasn't a little devil on her shoulder cackling loudly. Ultimately he failed, and she felt that her pride at such a monumental loss at pinball was recovered slightly. When he hopped off, she slipped on and centered herself between the two pads. It was time for her to shine~
She scrolled through the difficulty, selected Heavy and chose her song. Beethoven Virus. "I dunno! Haven't played this game in quite a few years!"
Both pads lit up under her as a countdown started on screen, and she leaned back to grab the bars. Arrows started scrolling, she started to move her feet. Quickly a combo counter popped up. She hit perfect and marvelous every step.
By the time the two minute and ten second song was over she had amassed a combo score of 500, and her total score for the game was well into the millions. And, oh lawd, her calfs were on fire!
She turned from the screen and leaned on the railing toward him, not even bothering to hide how pleased with herself she was. "Still got it~!"
She quickly said her goodbyes, more than happy to finally be off the phone with the man, and tossed it onto her bed. A grand extra was not something she had rightly planned on, given that the painting had already been around $800. Shelby chewed on a nail anxiously as she finally fished her paints out and got her space ready. Laundry could wait for another day.
Still, there was strangeness to the whole thing she couldn't put her finger on. She'd been getting a lot more commissions lately, which wasn't inherently strange... but there had been two now that had offered her more money than usual. Generally people tried to get more out of her for free, or tried to haggle for a lower price for the painting itself.
She was not used to people throwing hoards of money at her.
Still, it didn't stop her from getting the painting set up and plopping herself down on the stool. So what if it was already 8pm? Who needed sleep anyway!
Well, that hadn't gone how she'd expected it to go!
She made a mental note to not antagonize him further while he could work his magic voice voodoo on the program and just kinda slumped against him in an exhausted heap while he played. Where the hell did he get all of that energy, anyway!?
It didn't take long for her to catch onto just how good he was at that particular game, and she felt a nervous sweat break out on the back of her neck. Or, well, that could have also been from the previous activity, but whatever.
Leaning forward so she could peer over his arm, she watched with wide eyes as be basically walked through the game with his hands tied behind his back. Then, as the end game lights were blinking and music was playing, she tried to casually avoid his gaze should he cast it on her. Oh, was it her turn already?
"I'm just gonna go ahead and admit defeat on this one before I embarrass myself."
Saph: 2, Shelby: 1
She was going to have to work harder at this. The next game she had in mind she knew was a definite win for her. She squinted at Saph momentarily. Yup, gonna have to bring out the big guns.
"The next game I choose is downstairs!" A hop, skip, and beat later and she was standing in front of a large, brightly lit machine that was pumping out electronic dance music. She turned an absolutely evil grin on him, and casually stretched.
"Ever played Dance Dance Revolution before?" If he couldn't ride a bike, she doubted it. Was this a low blow? Most assuredly. But she didn't care! She was losing! "You want to go first again?"
She pecked him on the lips and pocketed the token, grinning as she did so. "We'll see~" She purred, half tempted to cave and give it to him right then and there. But, well.. cameras. She was also seriously tempted to throw another coin in the game and beat her own high score.
Then he pointed across and up, and she nodded. Pinball? Well, if he wanted to dig his own grave that quickly...
She followed him upstairs, hands tucked in her pockets, and lost in thoughts. When they arrived at the designated machine. "I think you should go first this time." She started, and sidled up nice and close next to him. "I went first the last two times, after all."
She had to stand on her tippy toes, but she managed to lean up enough to get an arm gently around his neck and nibbled ever so softly on his ear. "And i'll be busy, anyway."
There was the distinct sound of a loud crash, cursing, and scratching as Shelby dropped the phone and scrambled to get it again.
"p-pardon!?" She only paused momentarily, before starting to drag out her supplies. "I mean, yes! Of course that works for me. I'll send you a picture of it by 9am tomorrow morning."
She was having trouble settling everything up one handed. "Are there any other things you would want me to add in while i'm already at the easel?"
Well, that escalated quickly. Somewhere around the time they stopped firing at him her jaw had dropped and she'd just spent the remainder of the time staring mutely at the game and he waltzed through it.
Her best friend would have shat himself a million times over.
"Friend of one of my foster parents helped program galaga. Showed me that. Not a cheat if it's part of the game!"
He preemptively had just saved himself from an ear lashing. She held her tongue instead and just pinched the bridge of her nose, then dragged it down her face. "Ok! Fine, one point for you!" &%$# her though, if he knew some kind of damn trick for every game she was gonna lose! Well, not that she really minded what he demanded in return for winning, but... she hated losing!
"Next game!"
This one was a bit newer than the other games. It was a first person shooter game called 'Carnival' that had to do with evil clowns, zombies, and monsters, and you could either play it alone or with a partner. For the purposes of their wager though, she tossed in a coin and picked up the little light gun that resembled a pistol.
As soon as the opening graphics cut out she lifted the little gun up, bent her knees slightly and got ready.
25 minutes of zombie/monster killing later, she had beaten the last boss, scored almost all of the hidden power ups and secrets, and was typing her initials into the blinking box. She stretched with her arms over her head, earning a few good pops from her spine, and waved a hand for Saph to step up and take a turn. "If you beat me this time, i'll toss in something extra." With a smile, she leaned in and whispered something in his ear before giving his shoulder a pat and stepping back.
She looked over at the game he pointed out, whistled under her breath and crackled her knuckles. "Don't mind if I do."
Slipping over to the machine she snagged one of the stools and seated herself in front of it. In went one of the coins, she steadied herself on the lip of the cabinet and let her fingers rest on the joystick.
The title screen flashed thought it's intro phase, stirring the happiest of feelings in her chest. This was going to be fun!
The game began. The high score on the screen was currently 20000. She made a little mental note of it somewhere in the back of her thoughts. The insect invaders started to fly onto the screen. She let the fist two waves fully make an entrance, and only started to shoot once the blue and yellow bee-like invaders appeared. It was a cakewalk to avoid the projectiles and beams for the first minute or so, until she'd gotten her first 1up. Shortly after that she allowed her first ship to get captured, fought to get it back, and once she had too, well... it was a blur of projectiles and aliens from there.
By the time she lost her last ship, she'd made it to level 24 and had compiled 234.000 points. She sat back with a huff, tapped in her initials for the new high-score, and then vacated the seat so he could try his hand at it.
"Your turn, cowboy!" Her grin could not have gotten any wider.
She blinked. It wasn't abnormal for people to request last minute alterations or additions. She was more surprised she'd missed his apparent note. "Oh! My apologies, I must have missed the note completely." She hustled over to her desk to write herself a note about calling him for the future.
"I can of course add that in. No problem, in fact." The background didn't really have much in it The whole concept kind of reminded her of one those old velvet paintings that had been so popular in the 70's.
Texting him her progress was... well, that was weird. She blinked and sat down on her bed, laundry currently forgotten. "I suppose I can do that." She started, "I'm not sure when I will be able to start on it again. I have another commission that I am currently working on. I may be able to pick it up in the next few days. I could send you a picture of it when I finish, if that works?"
She eyed the painting again, giving it a critical once over. There was enough space to add some more stuff, sure... but it would throw off the whole feeling she'd gotten set up for it. With a silent sigh, she reminded herself that this was exactly why she hated most of the people she got commissions from. They just couldn't make up their minds.
"Sure... But if I win. You gotta be my girlfriend."
The sly grin lessened and she looked almost startled for a moment. Her eye brows shot up, glasses slipped a little on her nose, and she lost her previous train of thought. Date him? Jeez, this was moving quickly wasn't it. She didn't ponder on it for long though. Really, was she gonna get any luckier? An x-man, who had also saved her and was pretty much doing every thing in his power to make sure she felt damned safe, wanted to date her?
Had she walked into a worm hole and somehow ended up in a different dimension?
"You're on!" She reached out to shake on it, thought better of it, and launched herself at him to plant a kiss on him instead. Maybe her idea for a date hadn't turned out so bad after all?
"Alright, I'll let you choose the first game because i'm in a generous mood." She laughed and disentangled herself from him. Was she going to tell him that she'd basically grown up in this exact arcade? Having spent nearly every day after school there until her one of her parents could get off work to come get her, she had a good majority of the games pretty much memorized. Heck, her and her best friend at the time had made it their life's mission to get their initials to the top of the high scores list as many times as possible.
She glanced up at the ceiling, spying the old shell of a Volkswagen beetle suspended from the ceiling, as well as a good deal of white twinkle lights. Archie's arcade was burned into her memory so deeply that she'd been able to tell the programmer pretty much where every game was, and every unique article of furniture and decoration. There were stuffed animals heads in some places, the ever popular 'Jackalope', old 50's diner style stools and chairs. There was an entire upper floor devoted to classic pinball games. Downstairs there was wing that had been devoted to classic arcade games. That whole section had neon and black lights. There was another wing on the opposite side where all of the 'athletic' games were held, or the more adult staples. Pool, basket ball, shooter games. One of her favorites was on that side, and she was itching to scrambled on over there.
Patience, though. His crushing defeat could wait until after he'd chosen his first game.
"You stay here, while I deal with whatever's inside."
She nodded, watching as people scattered on the streets, then turned to look back at him. "Hey, be careful, okay?" She hardly knew him at all, but she'd never seem a flock of people run like that before. She'd heard about it, from various snippets of news stories. Generally wide spread panic like that only ever had to do with mutants of some sort.
She was more than happy to stay out of his way though. She wasn't foolish enough to think herself any kind of a hero. She stepped back a ways, staying near the doors but also leaving herself a clean exit should s&%@ hit the fan.
Inside, 'Officer Brown' received a neat little bleep on his phone. The sound of a notification on his borrowed phone. Lifting it, he spied the live tracker for activity in their area. "Fu--." Turning to Barney, moved to draw his gun. "Someone was able to request backup."
Barney nodded, holding the containment bubble in the other room to keep the other bot busy. "Well, we will just have to gone before they get here. Let's git."
The woman stepped forward and raised her hands toward the hold in the wall, using her power to grow a patch from the wooden beams that made up most of the support for the wall. It would keep the bot out at least temporarily should Barney need to drop his bubble. Then they turned and started to head for the door, fully intending on heading out the front doors. Little did they know they were more or less walking into an ambush.
Peck hung back from the group, shifting his face back into Brown's. He headed for a different door; the side door that the judge normally entered through. He was more useful in the shadows, away from prying eyes...
She chuckled and stepped away from the panel. "Yup!" Was her answer to his first question. "Seattle around about, oh," She did the math in her head, "1998." She joined him by the door, stepped into his open arm and together they entered. "And pardon me, but you sir are the one who's posterior is about to get the boot." A smug little grin settled on her lips.
What greeted them on the other side of the door was probably as much of a spectacle for her as it was for him. They were on Pine street, only a little ways away from the heart of the city. Above the mid sized, well aged buildings sat a few sky scrapers in the distance and the easy to spot shape of the space needle. She pointed at it excitedly. "There's the needle! You see the top? There's a restaurant up there that spins. You can sit and literally see the whole city during your meal." She'd been up there once. Not in the restaurant, just up on the observation deck. It was a pretty spectacular view.
Turning away from the skyline, she looked across the street toward the Arcade. They had been plopped down smack in the middle of a side walk, right outside of a Casey's department store. Across the street, just down from the arcade was Pacific place. A compact shopping mall with various stores inside. She allowed him a few moments to take in the sights before she reached for his hand and started toward the street. Given that it was Seattle and traffic had always been a nightmare, she waited for a few older modeled cars to roll past before crossing. A virtual pile of other generated pedestrians started across at the same time. She chuckled. The programmer had even gotten the foot traffic down pretty well.
Once they stepped foot on the other side she paused and held her hands out in front of her. "Computer, two bags of tokens!" Matching bags materialized before her eyes, eliciting a childish giggle, and she snatched then from the air. Shelby then turned a sly, foxy grin Saph's way. "Okay, before we go in there are some ground rules."
She tossed the full bag of coins in her hand, clearly having a ball. "One: No cheating! If I catch you cheating to win any of the games, you will owe me something of my choosing! That also works towards me, too. If you catch me cheating at any point, I will owe you something of your choosing. Got it?"
She waited for confirmation, then moved on. "Two: Whoever gets the highest score on the most games wins. That means that we will take a tally when we are done and see how many games you beat verses how many I beat, yeah?" The sly grin shifted into something a tiny bit more sinister.
"If I win, you have to take me on an adventure. That's what I want." She paused, finally handing him his own bag of tokens, which upon inspection would look pretty darn similar to the gold coins she had given him as a gift.
"Land sharks." She muttered, nodding along with his sentiment. She climbed in on the passengers side, buckling herself in, and immediately shrank into her seat when he hit the lights and sirens. "Woah!"
She'd never been in a police car that was actively being... police-y. The few short trips she'd taken back and forth with Gallagher had been spent in terse silence. This was a welcome change.
She laughed, sitting up in her seat and relaxing as she edged her shoulder bag onto the floor by her seat. The sirens were pretty loud, so she didn't bother trying to talk over them. She didn't feel like wearing her voice out and sounding like a frog for the rest of the day.
But, when they had reached their destination and pulled up along the sidewalk, she eyeballed the small courthouse and unbuckled. "Do you just wanna wait here while I go in? It's pretty boring. I have to get them to stamp a bunch of papers to prove that i'm who I say I am."
She glanced at him momentarily as she set about getting out of the car. Whatever his choice she needed to go in, and thus prepared herself for it.
She had no way of knowing that there was already a ruckus going on inside. A mutant by the name of 'Barney' was scheduled for court that same day, and while he wasn't exactly well known his punishment was sure to be a lifetime sentence in prison. See, he'd robbed a small convenience store a while back, desperate for even petty change. While that wasn't enough to throw him away for life by itself, the problem for him came in the details. He'd opened fire at the clerk, who had reached for a gun behind the counter. In the chaos that had ensued he'd shot and killed a kid by accident. He was being put away from that. It didn't help his case that the attorney he had been assigned was a crackpot, in his opinion.
Thankfully Barney had some friends who weren't exactly willing to let him get sent along to a secure mutant holding facility for the rest of his life, and thus a plan to break him out had been formed.
They waited until he had been taken in for the trial before they made their move. One of them, Peck, had the handy ability to change his appearance at will. From hair to socks he could alter his own appearance and sneak into virtually any situation. Considering that Barney was flanked by two Meta's and three officers, they had needed someone on the inside to feed them details. Thus, earlier that day, Peck had made a visit to one of the officers homes and.. eh... taken over for him for the day. His new face, Officer Brown, allowed him to infiltrate the trial on a whole new level. It helped that brown was also a mutant; the bots that were standing guard at the trial would recognize him as mutant, but weren't sophisticated enough to be able to tell mutations apart.
He was in the courtroom as the proceedings were going on, surveying the situation silently. A little camera that had been hidden on him was doing all of the talking for him, feeding information about how many cops there were, civilians, and entrances and exits. When he deemed it time he tapped on the mic twice in rapid succession, a signal for his buddies to move in. Two more joined in then, one a large hulking figure stalking down the hallway, and the other a smaller regal female slinking along beside him. The smaller one lifted a hand as they neared the doors. There were two officers were stationed outside the doors, both of whom were instantly on alert as soon as the two strangers approached. Unfortunately for them the woman had the power to bring the heavy wooden doors behind them to life. Wooden arms groaned as they lashed out and made quick work of binding the officers to the doors. They hadn't even had the time to each for their guns.
Her heavyset companion then lifted a foot and kicked the doors in, blowing them right off the hinges. The Meta's were instantly on alert.
"ATTENTION. STAND DO-"
He lurched in and grabbed the closest one in one large hand, then casually started to crunch it into a large metal ball. The other primed itself and opened fire while it's human controller turned to Barney. Peck grinned, not even bothering to deal with the last meta, as he moved over to where Barney was and dug out the keys that would release him from his electric cuffs.
Meanwhile civilians were ducking and running for cover, Barney, once freed, threw his hands out and a sheer, solid bubble of energy formed around the bot. He lifted his hand, lifting the bubble as well, and the with as much force as he could muster he threw the ball across the room. It blew through a wall and into the next room over, while he and he turned to his partners. Peck shifted back into his own face, twirling the keys on one finger. "Well, shall we go?
Shelby walked into the building at that exact moment, was was met with a surge of people stampeding toward her. She threw herself out of the way before they could trample her into the door, pressing herself up against the wall.
She blinked and deflated a little. Okay, maybe she didn't need to take it out passive aggressively on the new guy. He introduced himself and she felt a smidgen of guilt settle on her shoulders. His tone was kind. She held a hand out toward him and forced a small smile. It was time she kicked her own rear back into gear.
"Nice to meet you as well, Officer. Shelby, or Heidi now too... I guess." She was sure he already knew her name, or names, but introduced herself anyway. It didn't feel real until it came from her own lips. She hadn't decided if she found that disconcerting or not yet, the whole 'people knowing who she was before she introduced herself' thing. She wasn't used to being noteworthy.
"Eh, sorry for being a grouch on the way here." She paused, shuffling awkwardly on her feet. "Dr. Hawklins up there already knows how to push all of my buttons, and I think he gleefully tries to get all of them in one go every time." She grumbled under her breath another few short comments before sighing again.
She glanced at her wrist watch, "Well, I have a few papers that I need to notarized." Paperwork for her temporary school situation, as well as some paperwork for the case they were picking away at. It was coming along gradually. Seemed slow to her, but Gallagher had assured it that it was a normal pace for a crime as complicated as the one she was involved in.
"Gotta go to a bank, or the courthouse to find a notary. Either place will do, really, so I guess we just have to choose."
Of course, neither of them had no way of knowing that both places were the target of two very different crimes that day....
Flinching, she nearly dropped the phone at the sheer volume of the voice on the other side. After a quick recovery she brought it back to her ear, the non-damaged one. "Um, yes, this is she."
She started folding again as he talked. Turns out he was a commission buyer. "Oh! Well, nice to formally meet you, Shane." She cringed mentally, tossing her un-folded underwear to the side in order to turn and head toward the pile of canvases stacked against her wall.
"I guess you got my email? I just finished your piece yesterday." She'd shot him an email back letting him know that the piece was done and that his payment had gone through, and that she needed an address in order to be able to send it to him.
"Unfortunately i'm not able to run the work out too you, so I have to ship it. The cost of same day or overnight shipping is included in the original price, however. It won't cost you any extra."
"They're arcade coins, you doofus." She wiggled the one she'd snagged at him, "You know, before everything went to card."
Oh god, he hadn't gotten it. She felt like an idiot and her face flushed appropriately. She shook her head at him eating them, chuckling nervously. Maybe she was in over her head. Over planned? He seemed like a pretty laid back guy, she'd just kind figured he'd be up for laid back dates. None of that flowers and dinner junk. Maybe she had assumed wrong?
She eyed the coin in her hand. It was a kiss token. She silently agonized over it. "I figured that since you had the day off, and I don't have anything currently to do, we could do something that doesn't involve losing all of our clothes again."
She glanced at him without turning her head, a rueful smile edging onto her face. "Well, at least that's what I had planned before you opened the door."
Letting them into the danger room once they arrived, she moved to the computer panel and poked at it a few times. With some ease she found the program that had been made for her, and brought it up.
"... Still haven't been in there yet." She mentioned, pointing to the wall where the door was supposed to appear. "Still kinda trips me out."
Inside, a sprawling city block appeared. The main focus was a large building decorated with large blinking bulbs in a rainbow of colors. 'Archie's Arcade' was spelled out across a grand entrance in large blocky neon. Her smile softened as she watched it on the monitor.
"But, I kinda got spoiled a little while requesting this. It's an arcade from my home town, which doesn't rightly exist anymore. It got tore down and replaced with a clothes boutique a few years before I moved here."
