The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Shin thought more about the night they’d all drank together, and Kealey just stayed quietly where she was. That night had been all about Shin, and helping him work through something. Alcohol wasn’t a good way to solve a problem, and Kealey knew it…but sometimes it sure didn’t hurt.
That time it hadn’t hurt. Not at all. She smiled when Shin said it wasn’t the worst memory. Good, then the mission had really been accomplished.
They moved on.
Shin explained that he hadn’t been able to sleep the night before, and Kealey’s eyebrows drew together in an even more concerned frown. It seemed impossible that with everything he did, Shin could possibly not be tired enough to sleep. She didn’t say anything though, at least not directly. Instead she shook her head and chuckled, ”And after cinnamon rolls you decided to bake a cake?”
The shard glove was interesting too. Kealey loved seeing that particular trick in action, and wondered if any more progress had been made.
”I knew because I know you, and I know that you’ll keep working until you’ve got it down to a science. Even if it means things like not sleeping for much too large periods of time.”

The article was interesting, and Kealey had to laugh a little at how one of the students had been napping during the lecture, then admitted it to the reporter! It sounded like it had been a good time, though, AND all the class was getting to be on national television during a major talk show. Incredible. Really incredible.
The reading had accomplished its purpose, and even though all the other emotions were still there, they hummed in the background like mosquitoes while Kealey read. So focused on her task, was the blond, that she jumped a little at the sound of Shin’s voice so close.
Up she looked, paper drooping in her hands as they dropped to her sides. Kealey grinned. He was ready to go.
”Hey.” she said, pushing up from the bench and doing a terrible job of folding up the paper so the article she was working on was facing up.
They started making their way towards the bus stop, and Kealey glanced down at the paper again.
”I was just reading this paper I found. It looks like some famous comedian was at your school. Did you know anything about that? I feel like I’ve heard the name of the class before…and the professor.” she said curiously, still working at ignoring the mosquito buzz of emotions in the back of her head.
She laughed a little uneasily.
”There was this guy they interviewed. He made me think of you. He said he was napping in class.”

Things were happening in slow-motion again, and Kealey watched in horror as a massive fist came sailing through the air in a flurried rush of panic and fear. The cop acted fast, and Kealey had to admire how cool he kept in spite of the situation at hand. He heaved, and Kealey winced at the emotions Andrew felt as he was pulled inside. There were certain things people felt when they were in pain, and Andrew had them in spades.
She hadn’t thought she’d hit Mittens hard enough to do any real damage, but the blond watched in horror as the big man toppled through the hole he’d just made with his fist. It was a long way down.
Kealey rushed forward and looked down, desperately trying to seek out the emotions of the man on the ground. There weren’t any.
For a horrible moment, Kealey wondered if she’d killed the man. Then, the cop came forward and yelled something out. Mittens was alive. The blond let out breath she hadn’t even realized she was holding and stood for a moment on legs that wobbled so much she almost sat down.
”Thanks for the assist. You okay?”
Kealey turned and nodded mutely for a moment while she searched for a voice that was being tamped down by a rolling feeling in her stomach.
”It’s what we do. I’m Kealey Quinn, I’m a trainee with the X-Men, and this is….”
Ghost?
Where had she gone? Kealey turned a few confused circles, looking for her partner and starting to panic all over again. There were a lot of emotions in this room, weeping relief, diminishing fear, confusion, and Ghost was gone. She’d been by Mittens…had something happened when she fell?
Kealey was just about to start freaking out when Ghost’s voice floated up from down below.
The blond stared down at the ground again, watching in slight horror as the obviously unconscious body of Mittens tried to sit up and immediately had several guns clicked in its general direction.
Kealey turned to ask the cop for help and realized he wasn’t there anymore. He was cuffing bad guys.
”Officer!” she called in his direction…”I’m going to need your help. My partner is…inside of the ring-leader down there and your partners are making it hard for her to reassert herself…can you ask them to back off? I promise you he won‘t be going anywhere.”
Now it was all over. Kealey looked around…this had not gone as smoothly as they had hoped…but nobody was dead. Not even the bad guy. He’d live to stand trial and go to jail. It was a relief. Ghost would have things sorted out in a moment, and they could all go home.
It was such a relief that Kealey did the only thing she could with a her head throbbing so steadily and so many emotions rolling around inside of her.
She found the nearest potted plant and promptly emptied her stomach.

Shin grinned, Kealey grinned, they grinned. It was generally a pretty darn happy room for the time being, and it didn’t look like anything was going to change that. Not even the memory of when the cake had been delivered, even if it was of slight concern to the blond being cuddled.
Shin verified that it had, in fact, been both him and Andrew who had made the cake. That in and of itself was a little mind boggling…that the two of them would have randomly met in the kitchen and decided to make a cake. She didn’t question it though, just nodded her head at the earlier question of timing.
Shin caught her eyes with his, and Kealey looked back steadily as he spoke, grinning when he admitted to zoning out while they were working. What had he been thinking about? Kealey was just about to ask when Shin kissed her on the cheek and made another comment.
She smiled and shrugged her shoulders, still comfortably snuggled, ” I’m not sure if you did or not, but it doesn’t matter. You eventually felt better, and that’s what mattered.”
She thought for a few moments, then laughed at the memory, shaking her head.
”Poor Aurum got the brunt of both our awkwardness over that…and all he was doing was trying to cook breakfast.”
She shook her head again, mind wandering back to the current situation ”What were you and Andrew doing in the kitchen that late? Were you working more on your armor?” she asked curiously, with just a hint of worry in her voice. Shin really didn’t sleep enough, and he was so busy. Cooking at odd hours of the morning was probably not conducive to enough rest.

The bus had been early for once, with nobody really needing to get on and off between the FIT campus and NYU. It was a rare occasion, and it also meant that the bus was relatively empty. It made things so much easier for Kealey when that was the case. Busses were always a problem…possibly because of the close proximity of all the passengers. More likely because of the fact that everyone who rode the NYC busses seemed to be in a perpetual state of emotional turmoil.
This, however, was not the case, and it had Kealey in an excellent mood. It also had her arriving at the NYU campus a good twenty minutes early. It was a nice, autumn day though, and she simply found a park bench near the appropriate building to sit on while she waited for classes to get out.
There were a lot of people on the NYU campus, and Kealey chalked it up to the fact that she was there in the middle of the day during classes. There were varying degrees of different emotions, and for a few moments she simply sat and stared into space. It was a bit overwhelming and the feelings made her antsy. She needed distraction while she waited.
Kealey opened the messenger bag she’d made for classes this year, and pulled out a slightly rumpled newspaper shed found in the desk she’d chosen that morning for her first class. Kealey wasn’t a big newspaper reader, but with nothing else to distract her, it would have to do.
Blue eyes skimmed headlines until they settled on one pertaining to the very place she sat. Apparently a big name comedian had dropped into a NYU class recently and unexpected. The story was interesting, the students had been thrilled, and something about the name of the class and professor rung a bell in Kealey’s head. Hadn’t Shin mentioned something similar in conversation?
She’d have to ask.
In the meantime she continued to read, waiting for Shin to exit the building and hoping she’d be able to keep herself together emotionally for the rest of her stay on campus.

Kealey nodded when Shin suggested that he’d done a pretty good job keeping her warm. Considering the fact that she was only in shorts and a tank top, that was the honest truth.
”You didn’t throw me out of the bed this time either.” she teased, referencing another time they’d woken up this way after Shin had stolen her blankets. Had it been that long ago?
Sleepy morning emotions were sleepy, and Kealey did a whole lot of dreamy return snuggling for the next few moments while she worked on sorting everything out. What day was it? What time was it? Was this something that could go on for the next several days?
A new emotion worked its way into the happy, content slurry of warm that was circulating between them, and Kealey was already grinning when Shin spoke. Squirming slightly at the way his whisper tickled her ear, she nodded her head.
”I didn’t touch it. It’s on my desk. Did you really bring that to me at Three in the morning?” She stopped and thought for a moment, wondering where sleepy memories ended and dreams started, ”And did you say you helped Andrew cook it?”

When she’d crawled into her bed next to Shin, Kealey hadn’t known if she’d be able to fall back asleep. Sometimes that was a difficult thing to do, once she’d been woken up. It was dark in the room, and just a little bit chilly, something that wasn’t going to change any time soon. Shin had been in possession of all the blankets.
She’d managed. Snuggling had ensued, and in far less time than she’d estimated, Kealey had fallen asleep.
She dreamed about Happy Feet.
It had been a long time since she and Shin had watched the movie, but there it was. The penguins were everywhere, singing their heart songs and milling around. The babies were so cute…so fluffy. But it was cold. Kealey shivered, making her way through the penguins and trying to figure out exactly what it was she was supposed to be singing.
A fluffy little baby penguin approached as Kealey danced from foot to foot, trying to warm herself up.
It asked her why she was hopping around like that. She said she was cold. It made sense. The baby followed suit. The movement attracted attention, and slowly but surely more penguins joined in the little dance as Kealey continued to move around the penguin houses, looking for a jacket or blanket and failing miserably.
Finally, she came to a dark but cozy looking cave. An entourage of baby penguins followed as Kealey made her way towards what seemed to be a wall of warmth. It was dark, but when she found it, Kealey laid down in the soft pillowy snow, snuggling close. The babies must have realized she was cold, because they huddled around too, and Kealey sighed happily…
Then there was a small earthquake.
The scene shifted to the familiar blackness of the backs of her eyelids, then the dim interior of her room as her eyes snapped open. She wasn’t in a cave….she was in her bed. Those weren’t baby penguins…those were plushies, and that wall of warmth. Well, it was a wall of warmth, but it was Shin.
He’d brought her cake, and now he was hugging her.
She shifted slightly, eyes finding Shin’s and she smiled sleepily and snuggled closer for warmth. ”Morning?” she said a bit sheepishly, ”You stole my blanket again.”

The cop was telling Mittens to calm down, but Kealey knew that nothing in the big man’s emotions was going to change unless she let it. For now, things were staying exactly how they were. She couldn’t see Ghost anymore, so all the blond could assume was that the air elemental had things under control.
Kealey wasn’t having as much luck. Her head was still spinning a bit, and every time she tried to change one emotion in the large mutant holding Andrew, another one started to spiral out of control. Mitten’s was panicking, and without Kealey keeping a firm hand on all of his emotions, they were skyrocketing of their own volition. That was bad…really bad.
Then he dropped Andrew out the window.
Everything seemed to move in slow motion, and Kealey could feel every emotion behind every action. Mittens was still terrified and enraged, Andrew was confused then horrified, the police officer was intent, and determined. He dove…and Kealey’s heart tried to jump out of her chest.
Then, there was relief. Kealey almost collapsed where she stood, realizing too late that she’d completely let go of her control over Mittens’ emotions. Andrew was safe…at least for the time being.
The relief didn’t last long and Kealey watched in horror as Mittens raised one of his huge fists, ready to bring it down on the cop.
Kealey moved before she even knew what she was doing.
”LOOK OUT!” she screamed, sprinting forward and launching herself into Mitten’s back as hard as she possibly could. The impact nearly drove the breath from her, but Kealey felt the subtle shift in his weight as he started to fall forward.
Please please please…. she chanted internally…if she couldn’t push him over, maybe she could at least distract him long enough to give the cop and Andrew a chance to get out of the way.

It definitely was a cake. Kealey stared at the cake, then turned her head to look at the clock again. Shin spoke, explained, and Kealey blinked once, twice, her still groggy mind trying to comprehend exactly what her boyfriend was saying.
He’d stolen the cake from Andrew…then iced it….then brought it to her. She dumbly took the proffered confectionary and stood in the doorway for a moment to process things while Shin made his way into her room.
”That was really nice of you guys…I’m glad you get along. He’s nice. You were busy when I brought him back here, so I got him set up with a room.”
She wasn’t irritated about getting woken up, not at all. She was just sleepy still, and her brain was taking a while to process emotions and words as they happened. Eventually everything clicked into place and she turned, shutting her door with her foot and moving to put the cake on top of some sketches that were sitting on her desk. Then she flipped on a light…they had to see to eat.
Shin wanted her to cut the cake, and said he was tired. Kealey really wasn’t all that surprised. He had to be running on fumes 90 percent of the time, with as much as he did. It was a little ridiculous, and something she’d been meaning to talk to him about.
She needed to wake up first, though. Cake would help.
Kealey glanced around the room, wondering exactly what she was supposed to cut the cake with, and how exactly they were supposed to eat it. She spied her fabric cutting shears and made a decision. As long as the cake was cut…eating could be accomplished.
Kealey opened the shears and used them like a knife, cutting two relatively small pieces from the cake. It was awful late for something so sweet. Kealey yawned again, wondering how she was going to get the cake off the plate and over to Shin on the bed. Why was she so sleepy still…she turned to ask exactly how this whole thing was going to work and simply stood for a moment, torn between laughing, and aww’ing out loud.
Shin was sleeping in her bed. Snuggling himself. Well…the plushie of himself. Kealey stood and watched for a moment, not long enough to be creepy, but long enough to shake her head and smile before she put the scissors down.
What now?
She really wasn’t all that hungry…more than anything she was sleepy. She eyed the bed, Shin had stolen the covers. Another chuckle, and Kealey made her way in that direction, flipping off the light as she went. She wasn’t going to wake him up…not when he slept so little, and at such strange hours. She’d just have to live with the fact that she wouldn’t be getting any more blankets for the rest of the night. Oh well. She’d have to find another way to keep warm, wouldn’t she?

Kealey’s. Head. Hurt. And things were getting worse and worse. The hostages were panicking now, and it was getting more and more difficult for Kealey to separate such strong feelings from her own. She could feel the butterflies building in her stomach and the urge to run or scream rising in her chest. She took a deep breath and focused just like she had practiced with Shin. Her slightly addled brain cooperated slowly yet surely and the emotions all retreated into their respective bubbles, still there but somehow separate from her own. It helped.
Now. For Mittens. Kealey wheeled slightly as he moved, feeling his confusion and rage at the situation that they’d created. She held his thugs in check, keeping them so disoriented they had probably forgotten their names…let alone how to use a gun.
A new voice, and a new batch of emotions joined the fray. A cop. Who made water fly across the room. A mutant cop. Kealey wondered idly if he knew Shin.
Deciding that idle thoughts were probably not the best idea in the middle of a hostage situation gone south, Kealey focused on giving the police officer support in the form of keeping thugs confused.
So focused on her task was Kealey, that she’d lost tabs on the hostages. By the time she realized what was about to happen…it was too late.
Mittens scooped Andrew up, then used his hand as a shield when the cop fired. Fired a gun in a room of people.
”Are you out of your bloody mind?!” She shouted at the cop.
It was decision time. Kealey took a split second to weigh her options as she felt ghost move towards Mittens’ head. They’d tag-team him. Kealey dropped her hold on the other gunmen in the room. It would take them time to get their wits back about them, and hopefully it would be long enough that she could come back to them.
Mittens was furious, he was also terrified. Kealey didn’t know what to do with those things because they mingled into a cocktail that could only be described as murderous….and Andrew was in his massive, disgusting hands.
Kealey thought about the bird and nearly lost her resolve.
Nearly.
It would be delicate, she focused despite her slightly bleary vision and throbbing head, the slowly started to work.
Aggression dropped dramatically, but she left the fear alone, sidestepping it carefully to drop the anger and frustration…but not too much. She held those things…right where they were, even as Ghosty started work her magic. Mittens would feel himself losing air, probably start getting light headed…but he wouldn’t panic…wouldn’t react.

Kealey Quinn liked to sleep. She always had, she probably always would. When she thought about it, she could remember her mother laughingly admonishing her for being a slug-a-bed while everyone else was already awake on the rare days both parents were off work. It had also been one of the difficult things about living in the convent after the bombing…the nuns rose early and expected the same of their charge.
The freedom of New York had brought back some old habits, and one of them was sleeping. Pillows, and blankets, and soft beds with plushies that she and Shin had made themselves. Kealey was wrapped in those blankets, surrounded by those pillows, curled up on the bed with plushies surrounding and protecting her as was their duty. She was fast asleep, had been for a few hours. It was almost a miracle that she heard the Shin knocking. Knocking at her chamber door.
At the first soft sound, a blond head shifted on its pillows, a grumpy little sound escaping it, as its owner tried to burrow deeper into the covers. The second, louder, knock produced raised eyebrows and fists that rubbed sleepy eyes. The third, loudest knock pulled those eyes open to glance blearily at the clock on Kealey’s night stand. She’d been having such a lovely dream…
The lights were staying off, she thought, sleepy mind still trying to claw its way to full consciousness as she pulled herself free from the sheets and shivered her way across the room in her shorts and tank top. It was too late/early to worry about finding anything else.
Kealey opened the door and squinted at the bright light as she found herself face to face with the only person she wasn’t angry to see at this time of night/morning.
”Shin….” she yawned with a sleepy smile, rubbing that silly eye again and taking a moment to assess his emotions and make sure nothing was wrong. Her mind was still bleary…but he actually seemed to be in a rather good mood…and…he…had…a…cake.
”Hi…is that a cake?” she said, stepping back into the room to make room for him to enter.

Kealey didn’t even smirk when the man turned and came back within proper talking distance. You’re welcome universe. she said mentally, a friendly smile on her face as he spoke.
”I’d love to.” she said, ”You see, when I’m not on the beat with the Fashion Police, I’m a design student over at FIT. A student at FIT with a big mouth and no idea when she should mind her own business.” she admitted candidly and contritely.
”It does sound like you need some help though. Big dinners are big….and hard to dress for.”
It sounded like the dinner was important, and from the clothes he’d already picked out…formal. Definitely a shirt and tie thing…he didn’t have any jackets in his arms though…
”Hmmmm.” Kealey said, eyeing the clothes piled in his arms.
”Let’s start with trousers. Put all of those back…” she commanded, then walked to another rack of slightly more expensive, but still very affordable, pants.
”For an important pair of pants, spending a few more dollars is always a good idea. They lay better, look more crisp. If you’re trying to look business-casual, flat front pants are best. Pleats can be too cumbersome….” She waited for him to pick out his size.

Oh man…she’d made things even worse when she’d admitted her powers. Now, not only was the kid uncomfortable, he was embarrassed and a million other mortified things that a person did not want to bring out in a teenager. Kealey ran a hand through her hair and sighed over the hum of the dryer…how could she fix this now?
The silence stretched, the dryer dried…Kealey made a job offer.
The emotions changed, and Kealey sighed in relief. She really did need to be more careful with the younger mutants…they were so uncomfortable about things sometimes. Then again…she’d always known she needed to be more careful with disclosures about her own powers. It took a certain kind of person to be okay with someone knowing their emotions.
Lance asked if she had another hair dryer, and Kealey grinned, shutting off the one in her hand for the moment and holding it out to her new assistant.
”I’ll go borrow another one. You go ahead and take this, and you can get started while I‘m gone.”

He was irritated by her interjection. Kealey had to admit, she might have been too if she’d been in the same situation. The man at the clothing rack hadn’t asked for her help, and the initially way she’d approached could easily have been construed as rude.
The man was irritated, and a little confused, and a little embarrassed, and a little sheepish. He asked if she was the fashion police.
”I am…just don’t go asking for credentials. I left my bade in my other purse.” she added, turning slightly to display the bag on her shoulder.
Apparently her new friend didn’t find the joke funny…because he simply grabbed more bad clothes and made beeline for the fitting room.
”You’re going to be in there all day trying to find something that looks right in the mess you’ve got in your hands.” she called, not bothering to mask the slightly condescending tone of her voice. This was the mall…this was Kealey’s turf. She’d swoop in like an avenging fashion angel, and this man’s night would go off flawlessly. Kealey smiled at her own ingenuity…it was like paying it forward. The universe had been so good to her lately, it was time for a little payback.
”I’ll bet I could have you dressed to the nines in a half-hour.”

Kealey nodded her head in understanding when Shin pointed out that it had actually taken him quite a while to manage the glove he’d just show her. It made sense. The math he used was way beyond her skill set, and Kealey knew it. Numbers had never been her strong suit unless they were in relation to measurements on cloth. It didn’t matter though, it was still amazing that he could make a glove with his mind. Kealey didn’t bring any of that up, though. Shin was plenty confident about his abilities here.
She had to laugh when he pointed out that there was no 99.9 second limit on the armor he made, ”Well, at least I don’t have to worry about you turning into some crazy demon monster then.” she commented, building on his GARO reference with one of her own. ”Besides, I think you’ll have plenty to concentrate on making sure that the armor stays where it should and the world doesn’t see you in your knickers.” Not that she’d allow that, of course. Shin would have something to wear, even just under the armor. The joke was still funny though…at least to her.
It seemed he had another trick up the sleeves he wasn’t wearing, and Kealey watched as Shin moved his hand away and concentrated again. This took less time to materialize and Kealey’s eyes widened again. There was a lot of that going on…but what other reaction was there when a huge sword just materialized out of thin air.
”It looks like you’re set…” she commented, grinning the whole time. ”It never ceases to amaze me how good you are with your powers.” It was true. The only time she’d ever seen him falter was the time he’d fallen down in the hallway outside the living room…something so small, when she was struggling all the time.
Shin went on to comment on the fact that he’d need more practice and Kealey just nodded her head, a whole outfit was a lot more than just a glove and a sword. It would be so amazing when he was finished though…Kealey couldn’t wait to see.
It turned out he was also happy about the way the afternoon had gone, and the blond couldn’t help but laugh a little. He wanted to know what she thought, and Kealey scooted up so her head was by his on the pillow and she could look at him right in the eyes.
