The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Most of the time when Kealey moved far enough away from a person that they were out of her range, the feelings she shared with them faded and slowly disappeared. Most of the time it was a relief, because most of the time it worked. This time, it didn’t. Every time she blinked, Kealey could see the burning eyes that so very closely mirrored her own, and every time she let her mind wander, the piercing feelings persisted in their invasion of her psyche. Some of the emotions were her own. The knowledge that Kealey had gained during the rather brief conversation was powerful and self-condemning. It was a lot.
She needed to get away. She needed to get away quickly.
Shin was happy to oblige, just as Kealey had known he’d be. She took a deep breath and tried to focus on those emotions. For once, the warm comfort that was always there seemed unable to cut through everything else and Kealey sighed as they walked from the building.
They were quiet while they walked, and quiet when they got on the bike, and quiet after. Part of Kealey was glad for the silence, she didn’t know what to say. As always in situations like this, the blond marveled at how terrible she was at dealing with her own feelings. Then Shin spoke. He didn’t know where to take her.
Kealey wasn’t irritated, it wasn’t Shin’s fault and he really had tried. She’d felt him pondering over the options. She’d set him a difficult task. Where could they go that was close but secluded enough to meet her needs?
The answer came as they passed through the maze of pedestrian and vehicular traffic in downtown.
Maze.
”The hedge maze?” she replied simply.
It was close to home and warmth, but far enough removed that unless there was an extreme number of people out exploring on this cool day it would be quiet.

”Shin, this anime is very violent.”
”Mhm”
A few minutes later.
”Oh goodness, she just said the eff word again.”
”Mhm.”
Another few minutes, ”Oh my…did she really just call him a…”
”Yup.”
Finally, ”I don’t think what she just said is physically possible…”
It was nearing 3 am and Shin and Kealey had just started watching a new anime. It worked well that they were on Thanksgiving break, because Shin was having a sleepless night and Kealey had joined him by proxy. It’s kind of how it worked when you got to share your boyfriend’s emotions. Kealey didn’t mind though, Shin always had ideas of things to pass the time. This one was particularly interesting, and despite her protestations the blond was absolutely fascinated by what was happening on the screen. She hadn’t known that cartoons talked that way. The animes they usually watched were cute and funny, with sometimes intense moments…but this…this was a whole new level.
The concept was easy enough…business man gets intercepted by pirates…ends up joining the pirates. The pirates were the crazy part though…at least at first…and one of them was a girl. A real hard-nosed, go-getter type of girl. She drank real liquor, not beer, and she cursed like the sailor she was. Secretly, Kealey was impressed. She tried to imagine herself in such a role and failed, snuggling closer against Shin with a slight giggle. He was so patient with her rambling…and everything. She smiled.
Then, she spontaneously burst into tears. Horrible tears. Not happy tears, either, real…horrible…awful…tears. The emotions had come out of left field and shattered the happy, awe filled, comfortable moment she’d been enjoying. She couldn’t stop it though…not now that it had started in earnest. It was Kealey’s least favorite situation…knowing her emotions were there, trapped in their own little bubble while someone else’s ran completely rampant with her.
”I…don’t….know…what’s wrong….” she gasped between hiccups and small sobs. ”But someone is…is…really upset….”
Running hands through blond curls, the empathy tried to take a deep breath and calm herself, but failed, there was simply too much misery…and now there was more on top of it…from another source. ”It’s…re-really bad….and I can’t make it stop…”

Kealey realized she was shaking a little bit as Shin spoke. He said they wouldn’t do that type of simulation again until she said she was ready. If Kealey had her way, it probably wouldn’t be for a while…a long while. There were distractions, there were intense situations, then there was what had just happened. All those Shin clones….Kealey shuddered a final time, then tried to shake off the scary feelings. She nodded her head in the direction of the control room as he said he didn’t like to see her scared like that. She didn’t like to be scared like that.
Shin emerged from the control room and into the danger room a few moments later and when he smiled, she smiled back, relieved that the simulation was over. He suggested waffles and her face lit with a real smile. Everything was going to be okay. ”Waffles would be excellent.” she said. Excellent barely covered it. Waffles would be incredible.

Oh lord. This was really starting to get bad. The newcomers bustled in, and even though Kealey was pleased to see that it was Ghost and Sebastian and not someone unused to her strange behavior, it was still embarrassing to be sitting at a dinner table and crying. This was supposed to be a happy occasion! Aurum directed everything like a finely tuned orchestra, and soon they were all settled around the table and ready to eat. By this point, Kealey had managed to pull herself together at least a little...at least until Aurum announced that after they prayed, they were all going to say what they were thankful for. That meant…more thankful feelings. Kealey gulped, she was going to hold it together. She took a deep breath. Aurum gave thanks, and then it was on to the hard part.
Shin spoke quickly, and Kealey had to smile (a little tearily) at the way he said his piece. Her mind frantically rambled though, trying to find the words to put to the feelings inside her. There were so many, and they were so…so…she had it. It was her turn now, and Kealey smiled in turn at everyone at the table with her. When she spoke, her voice only quivered a little, smile still firmly in place.
”I’m doing two….because well…I want to.” she announced, then smiled and continued ”I’m thankful for everything I have here…who would have thought that home would be so far away from where I was born?” That was the first…as to the second, ”And I’m thankful that I get to share all these feelings with you all. I don’t want to start crying again…but you can’t imagine how it feels to be surrounded by this much good feeling…” she sniffled, dangerously close to tears again. ”So yeah…that’s it.”

This got worse and worse by the moment. There were Shin’s everywhere and Kealey simply didn’t know what to do to fight them. There were too many emotions. She’d asked for a distracting situation…and that’s exactly what Shin had given her. Sure, it could have been a little easier the first time, but was something worth doing if it wasn’t done right? Kealey wasn’t sure…but man, maybe this was done a little too right.
She aimed for the clown, missed and got a clone. Great. Now there was a slap happy clone running around…just what she needed. The clown was really doing his job now and the clones were running around like crazy people, swords flying….man, it was a lot. Kealey was totally overwhelmed. This was going to be bad…things that happened in the danger room felt like they happened for real. She winced as the clone came at her…just in time for Shin to decide to call the simulation.
That sword had been so close. Kealey shuddered. This had not been her favorite simulation. Definitely not. Up she looked in the direction of the control room and heaved a sigh of relief. The lingering morbid happiness made her shudder again and she called, voice slightly weary, ”I think that was a good idea…I’m not sure I’m ready for that clown yet. He’s scary enough by himself. We should keep it in mind for later though.”

Ghost got it. Ghost got it better than she should have. Kealey was the one who was supposed to know emotions here. She was the empath! How was it that the people closest to her always seemed to be able to read her emotions even more clearly than she read theirs? It was something she’d have to figure out. For now, though, she listened.
Ghost talked, saying things that Keaeley suddenly felt like she should have already known. They were still nice to hear though. He looked a certain way when she wasn’t there? Kealey reminded herself to bring that up at some point…or maybe sneak a peek. She wasn’t jealous of the bond Ghost claimed to have. It wasn’t in Kealey’s nature to be jealous like that, plus she was glad. People needed people, and Kealey wasn’t arrogant enough to believe she was all Shin needed. The insight was good.
She dropped her head and looked at the notebook, suddenly embarrassed.
”I know…It’s not that. Don’t forget, I know how he feels.” she said, tracing the things she’d drawn on the notebook paper with her finger, ”Sometimes it’s hard not to let the ‘what ifs’ get a food hold though…has that ever happened to you?” Kealey hoped so…somehow it would be better. Ghost, who was so serene and so…ethereal…if she had doubts sometimes, maybe everyone did.
As to Japanese liking blonds, Kealey simply had to laugh and smile a slightly knowing little smirk. "They sure do, don't they?"

All of the phrases were helpful and Kealey scribbled them down dutifully, phonetically, and thoroughly. She had the phrases. All the phrases. All the phrases that would help her buy cheap things at the market in Japan. Now those were helpful phrases.
Ghost pointed out that she knew this girl who owned a bookstore. Kealey grinned and chuckled, ”I also happen to know a librarian with access to a rather large number of books.”
Ghost suggested that maybe Kealey wasn’t there just for help with Japanese. Considering the fact that Kealey was going to Japan with her boyfriend who was from Japan to meet his Japanese family. It wasn’t that much of a stretch. As the other woman refreshed coffee, Kealey looked at her just a little sheepishly.
”Maybe…” she said.
”I’m…uh. Scared about some stuff and I wondered if you could help. I…I don’t have very many girlfriends and I think I need some advice.”

Kealey didn’t pry anymore about Jude. Ghost was his mother, regardless of the fact that he’d only joined the family recently. ”Well, he’s a wonderful little guy. Let me know if you ever need someone to stay with him. It’s the least I could do.” Jude was probably nearly old enough to not need a babysitter, but Kealey thought they’d get along well.
Ghost spoke and Kealey listened, copying down anything she could manage while the other woman spoke. The vowels seemed to be the same and Kealey watched raptly as Ghost pointed each one out and copied them down. Kealey traced them twice into her notebook. Those were easy enough…and a consonant syllable simply got added. Vowels always sounded the same.
At least the concept was simple. Kealey avoided thinking about the fact that there were probably hundreds of millions of words in the language. When she did that, she started to panic.
Ghost asked what Kealey needed to know specifically, and Kealey took a deep breath, letting it out and dissolving into helpless giggles.
”Besides, ‘I don’t speak Japanese?" she said, then looked back at the notebook page that was already filling up with notes.
”Maybe we should start with, ‘hello’ or ‘it’s nice to meet you.’ Something simple and polite? Maybe how to find a bathroom? You know, the important things.”

Terezi wasn’t happy to see Vriska, not at all. Especially after she started making snide comments to Karkat. That was the last thing she needed. The troll was so emotionally dense, and she was just starting to make progress! No way was she going to let her former scourge sister step in and mess things up. Terezi could almost smell the menace. This wouldn’t do, this wouldn’t do at all.
Terezi readied her cane for a vindictive bop, but before she was able to commence…Karkat stepped in and started ordering everyone around. Terezi thought about saying something…but he was the leader. Besides, he was so very adorable when he was being authoritative.
Aradia did something then, and Terezi lost a few moments simply standing and staring, unthinking, at the group in front of her. The psychic whammy ended with a tumbling stomach and Terezi almost lost her footing. Karkat did. She moved forward to help him, just as a flash of light burst through the area and everything went blank for another moment.
Kealey stared around her, wondering exactly how they’d gotten outside. Hadn’t they been getting ready to eat dessert first? Weren’t there supposed to be drinks coming? She turned her head to see Shin on the ground. How had they gotten outside? Snippets of memory started to come back, and Kealey raised a hand to her head.
They’d found some other Homestuck players, and Kealey definitely wasn’t ready for how fast their Nepeta recovered from whatever had just happened. She was pounced and stumbled, head still spinning a little bit as the other girl complimented her costume.
”Uh…thanks…yours is great to…” she managed to stammer, her words were true though. The construction on the Nepeta costume was every bit as good as her own. It was hard to see through the sunglasses though, especially now that it was dark. Kealey took them off and stowed them in a pocket of her dark jeans.
Making her way to where Shin was still on the ground, Kealey bent and took his arm gently. ”Are you alright? Where’s Andrew? I wonder what just happened…do you remember anything?”

Happy, happy, happy. Kealey wondered how much happy a person could be expected to handle. Was that the point of a holiday like this? Christmas had always been a happy affair when she’d been young, but it had also been a serious religious holiday. The same with Easter and any of the Saint’s days they’d been able to celebrate. This felt different somehow. Then again, Kealey hadn’t been able to feel all the emotions at that point. Maybe this was why people went so crazy about holidays.
Kealey realized she was staring at Shin and smiled, just as Aurum’s sister commented that her brother needed some help carrying food to the table. It didn’t take long for the decision to be made and the stampede to take place. Aurum’s food was worth it. Seriously. Shin got the turkey, and Kealey was so busy following the sight and smell of the meat with her eyes that she nearly dropped the green bean casserole when it was deposited in her arms.
The bowl was heavy, but Kealey managed it just fine, setting it on the table before returning to her seat next to Shin. Aurum followed, as well as Ami, then when they were all seated and people were starting to dig into food, it was announced that it was time to give thanks.
Aurum was right. Kealey was suddenly glad that she hadn’t started dishing or eating. She looked around the table at each person in turn. Everyone was so happy, so content, so…good. Uh oh. Too many good feelings were almost as bad as too many bad feelings sometimes and….
Kealey burst into tears. Happy tears…but tears all the same.
”I’m sorry….” she said between sniffles, smile firmly on her face in spite of the tears welling and rolling. ”I’m just so happy…and everyone is so happy…”
She sniffled, ”This is a wonderful holiday. I’m thankful for…for…too much to even explain right now.” She was looking at Shin while she said it, but quickly swung her eyes to Aurum and Ami, ”So…yeah.”
Then there was knocking, and voices, and Kealey recognized them. A teary giggle escaped her as the door opened, ”Happy Thanksgiving!”

Kealey nodded and sighed a bit when Ghost mentioned that she’d lucked out with parents. ”I always used to laugh when I saw people on TV, or read about books where girls freaked out about meeting parents…but goodness….all I can do is worry.”
Kealey looked at the little Frenchman seated at the table and gave him a broad smile. He was sweet, and he was emanating weighing, but friendly, feelings towards her. Kelaey gave a little wave, then turned back to Ghost as she explained that the Kappas were at least similar to the ones Rowling had created. That was a bit of a relief. She knew something.
The little Frenchman spoke up again and Kealey turned to regard him seriously. This was serious business. Very serious business, especially to the one of Jude’s tender years. ”Very much.” she said, then smiled as he gathered up all of his paperwork and made his way out of the room.
”He’s an old soul, isn’t he?” Kealey said as he retreated, ”He doesn’t feel like many children his age. He’s very sweet.”
Ghost directed Kealey to the papers on the table, and as the blond sat down she fought down slight panic at the overwhelming nature of the things laid out in front of her. At least if she’d had to learn French or Spanish, the letters would have looked familiar. Ghost explained that the letters were actually syllables, and Kealey nodded, pulling her notebook from her messenger bag and scribbling down a quick note.

When Kealey had grown up there hadn’t been talk of pilgrams and Indians. No hand-turkeys, no school plays about sharing food and learning how to plant corn. Thanksgiving was an American holiday, and Kealey wasn’t American. She’d been in the States for a few years now, and was still shocked with the vigor with which holidays were celebrated. It made her smile. People were different this time of year, even in New York.
To be honest, she and Shin hadn’t even talked about celebrating Thanksgiving. They’d heard about the dinner being served that night at the Mansion and had tossed around the idea of going, but it hadn’t been a priority. Then Aurum had offered to cook.
Aurum offering to cook made Thanksgiving into something else entirely. Kealey still didn’t completely understand, she didn’t know if she could. She just knew that it was important for Aurum to make a feast and that he’d asked her if he could use her kitchen to do it. Kealey had immediately accepted, likening it to a master musician asking to borrow your instrument. Aurum could cook. Aurum could really cook. They’d spent the day before preparing, Aurum in the kitchen, Kealey in the rest of the apartment. Shin had helped when he could, and everything had really come together.
The space was small, but there weren’t all that many of them. Furniture had been moved, tables had been set up, and with all the table cloths on top of them, they looked like one huge table. Kealey had whipped together some appropriate center pieces, and now they sat and waited. Kealey looked up and down the set up, maybe it was too big, too much, but it was their first real Thanksgiving.
Food was close. Kealey could smell it. Aurum’s sister had shown up, and Kealey couldn’t have been happier. This was going to be great. She smiled at Shin, they’d both been forced out of the kitchen after they’d hovered too much. There were potatoes, and turkey, and rolls, and pies, and green bean casserole. Things that Kealey hadn’t eaten before, but things that looked so good she couldn’t wait to try them. The emotions in the room were high with anticipation, eagerness, happiness. This was already a great day.
”This is going to be so awesome.” she said, grinning at Shin, ”So. Awesome. I think Thanksgiving is a great holiday.”
Ami came out the door with food, and Kealey actually squirmed in her seat.

Over the course of a few moments, the dam broke in the fight. Everything started happening at once, and Kealey did everything she could to hold it all under control. She failed. It wasn’t because of her powers, it wasn’t because of distractions, it was because all of a sudden she was sailing through the air.
How had that happened? One moment she’d targeted and laid the emotional whammy on the bad guy sitting on top of the crates. The wind had started blowing, and now she was sailing through the air. It couldn’t have been more than a few moments, seconds at most, but everything had slowed down. The ground fell away as she soared higher and higher, and Kealey knew that if she hit the ground from this height she was in serious trouble.
The scene of the small battle got further and further away as she sailed through the air and the blond wondered if anyone would be able to get there fast enough to save her. Kealey’s upward descent stopped now and as she started to descend she took a fateful glance down at the....water below?
There was water! She had a chance! Kealey started taking deep breaths, trying to fill her lungs with as much air as humanly possible. Then she said a prayer and held it just as she hit the surface.
The impact hurt. The impact definitely hurt, and the shock of the cold liquid made Kealey gasp as she went under. She tumbled as she sank, and for a moment she struggled to figure out which way was up.
Then she saw the sun.
Up Kealey swam, thankful for the swimming lessons her parents had insisted on when she was a little girl. She was anything but an expert swimmer, but she could doggy paddle just fine. She needed air, her vision starting to darken on the edges…her head broke the surface.
Kealey gasped, and sputtered, and tread water for a few moments, simply trying to catch her breath. She wasn’t all that far from the docks. Hopefully someone would come look for her…but until then. The blond sighed and started working her way in that direction.

”Hello Ghost!” Kealey had to smile when the other woman opened the door. She knew that Ghost’s real name was Maya, but for some reason ‘Ghost’ seemed so much more natural. The apartment was so much different from the one that Kealey lived in just down the hall and she took a moment looking around.
Ghost and Sebastian’s son sat at a table, working on what appeared to be homework and the entire thing emanated such an intense emotional aura of comfort that Kealey had to let out a happy little sigh. She could see a little pot of tea on the table, and when Ghost offered Kealey said that she would indeed love a cup of tea when it was ready. Tea was a helpful study aide.
Kealey came further into the apartment, shedding her coat and hat and making her way to the table where Ghost had set everything up. The pale woman bemoaned her lack of teaching materials and Kealey shook her head, turning a grateful look in her direction. ”No no, anything you can do to help will be so appreciated.” Kealey took a deep breath and let it out.
”I don’t know anything about Japan…or meeting parents.” Kealey may have paled a little. ”So yes…any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. As far as Kappas are concerned…I only know what I learned in Harry Potter. ”

It was quite a while later when the door to the waiting area opened and Kealey re-emerged. Her emotions were a swirling tempest of everything from pity to almost violent anger and everything in between. She saw Shin and stifled several different options for what to do. She was a little out of control, and there were a lot of people around. Looking like a loon in the middle of a penitentiary was usually a bad idea. She took a deep breath and approached, trying for the moment to simply forget what she’d just experienced. She needed to talk about it, let it out, but this wasn’t the right time or place. There were too many people here, too many other emotions for Kealey to sort out what she’d just seen.
She had to hold it together until Shin could get them somewhere reasonable. Approaching, she noticed he was reading a hunting and fishing magazine. Did Shin like hunting and fishing? Kealey didn’t know why that seemed odd, but it did. She stood by him for a moment before she spoke, happy that her voice only wavered a little bit.
”Can we go? Not home, somewhere quiet? I need to think.” she said, almost pleadingly. She knew she only had to ask, but the desperation was still there, if only a little.
