The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Garrett shook his head and made a 'wah-wah-wah' sound when she cracked the bad joke, sharing the corny grin with her. As Maya explained the source of her white locks, he was pleasantly surprised at her general ease with the situation. Though she may have fought any type of relationship before, giving in a bit may have helped her a bit. Helped them both.
As she prepared to explain the ID card, he took a seat on the floor near her. Not too close, but not too far away either. She was pointing out the sections and their meanings, clearly sidestepping his attempt for more information. He began to realize that she was certainly his match intellectually, a fact that made him like her that much more. Since she was not going to volunteer any information, he realized he would have to find out himself.
" Well, since I can't read any of that, could you tell me what your full name is? You do know mine, after all. Promise I won't tell." He then waited to see what the next secret treasure would be.
Garrett waited at the door for only a second before Maya called for him to enter. Rather than crunch every possible scenario and every possible response, he opted to just smile and come in as asked to. As he stepped by the door, he let his fingers push it slightly, enough to give more privacy without actually shutting it. She was freshly washed, her hair whiter than he had seen it in sometime. She seemed to glow, but he wondered if she glowed to everyone or just him.
She took his gifts and he watched her execute an amazingly formal movement as if it were breathing. He found her formalities incredible and enjoyed watching her pleasantly peculiar ways. When she commented on his knowing how to treat a lady, he just smiled and made a bit of a face like he thought an expert might. The ambiguity of silence seemed a better way to go than opening his mouth wide enough for both feet.
"Here it is. Ghost's Holy Grail."
A drawer full of silk. His impulse to be sarcastic melted away at the genuine shine her eyes gave off as she revealed more of her secrets to him. He watched as she handed him a small leather pocketbook. He fingered the small clover sticker and then opened it. He smiled as her eyes peeked out at him from an apparent ID. Unfortunately it was in Japanese. He had wanted to know her last name, but due to the anonymity she wished to have and her general formality, he had figured it was best to wait. Patience had gleaned him much of late.
His face was soft, yet puzzled. He decided the only way to find out anything was to open his mouth and be wary for feet. " Look at this lovely young girl. Any relation?" He smiled and winked at her. "Hmm, so how is it that your hair is white now? It seems too luxuriously soft to be a dye job. And what does all of this say?" It was a smooth move, he thought. He handed her the ID, while truly curious as to the literal meanings of the characters, but also hoping she might slip and say her last name herself.
Garrett almost fell as he kissed Maya's forehead, she had become incorporeal! Fortunately, it had been just a friendly kiss to close the moment. Had he had his eyes closed, he would have probably been kissing dirt. He walked as slowly as his tingling, waking-up legs would allow. He was still reeling from the events that had transpired. No more strange tension or awkward glances. They were together now, though he would probably never label it. Defining a relationship generally destroyed it, in his opinion.
A breeze blew over his shoulders and back as he made his way across the grounds. Surely, it was her, hurrying along. She probably had thought Garrett would be running to her room, but he needed to take the time himself to nurse his wounds and clean up.
As he arrived in his room and locked the door behind him, he disrobed and put the dirty clothes into the growing bag of soiled laundry. He needed to locate the washer and dryer soon. He stepped into the hot shower and washed off, finding he had many more nicks and scrapes then he had previously thought as the soap and hot water found them. He chose not to affect the pain, deciding that pain was there for a reason, indicating when to slow down and take it easy.
Once he finished up in the shower, he decided to wear some sweatpants over boxers and a comfortable over sized button down shirt. This way he would be comfortable and still be covered up. He wondered if Maya was worrying that he was coming to ravage her. He would be a liar if it had never crossed his mind, but he attributed that to biology. He would pass on shoes, however. They were filthy and it suited the occasion to forego them.
He looked over the room as he was leaving. Oh! He thought at the last moment prior to leaving to get one of the small censers he had and take some sandalwood cones for her to burn. He had remembered how she had enjoyed the scent the first time she had been here in his room. He gathered the items up and turned the lights off, closing and relocking the door behind him. He headed down the hall, turning into the girls' hall and finding himself at her door. It was partially opened, but to be sure he wasn't intruding, he said, " Maya? I am here. I come bearing gifts."
Maya seemed surprised that he had wanted to leave as soon as she had mentioned it, but she still managed to get up and start looking for him to find a way out. So, to Garrett, it wasn't too much of a shock. He smiled wryly as he started to get up, facing the ground as he did so to ensure the anonymity of the expression.. His legs, unlike Ghost's, were quite solid and incredibly sore from the various positions he had been sitting in. Another violet streak of pain shot through him when his now swollen palms held his body weight as he got up. It was all the price he had to pay.
She was shaking her head and probably questioning his sanity when she asked if he had crawled through the brambles. As he nodded his assent, he made sure to go out a little smarter. Since his legs and knees were still a bit numb, he crouched and scooted through the thorn vines on his feet. It was an arduous task, but gave him his hands to move particularly nasty tendrils out of the way. As he rose from the patch, he looked back at it and also shook his head in unison with her.
"Hmm. Apparently, I did. I guess emotion doesn't listen to reason often. But I think we are both finding that out together, aren't we?" He smiled and ran the fingers of his better, not-as-bloody hand through her hair. He looked down at himself. he was a mess. Dirt, blood, sweat and tears covered his clothes and body. " I had better go to my room and wash off and change. I will meet you in a bit at your room, okay?" He leaned in and planted a small kiss on her forehead, smiled once more and headed off across the grounds to get cleaned up.
She seemed to be avoiding the subject. Garrett had distracted her, noticing a wry smile pass her lips for a moment, but continuing down this path was no longer necessary. She had mentioned that if they left where they were, she could have shown him some of her personal belongings. It started to leave his mind and then returned with a quickness. In her room.
" It's not a bad idea. I don't want to wake up covered in ticks, actually. Why don't you head on over to your room and I'll make my way over there as soon as possible. Sound good?" He immediately started scanning the bushes for his original entryway. Though it was merely twilight, it caused the thorns and brambles to seem to meld together. The thought of spending the rest of the evening inside with her made him brave, however.
So it appeared that it wasn't such a big deal after all. Garrett was noticing a pattern here. He apparently had been building things up in his mind to such an extent as to expect an overblown reaction. In fact, he was causing the problem. As Maya shifted position in his arms, he relaxed more. That would have to be his new pattern. Her admission of B&E made him smile a bit as he realized he wasn't so tarnished.
She then told him that her father had sent her to the camps on purpose. On purpose? When she said it, his eyes widened with a bit of shock. What kind of person would willingly send their child to a hellhole like that? He then relaxed somewhat, remembering her father was military. She had probably not had it as rough as some. She mentioned herself being under the radar and hiding from being found out. He nodded and listened, all the while, a plan hatching slowly from an egg in his mind.
" You know, I have the opposite identity problem. No one out there is looking for me. Perhaps we could go to NYU and I could get your items for you. I can clean up enough to pass as a student or possibly some kind of social worker. I have seen enough of them. Maybe with our slightly criminal backgrounds, my low visibility and luck, we could pull it off and get your stuff back? They probably keep that stuff for a while."
He waited for her response, looking down at her with hope in his eyes and a smile. Hopefully, the plot would cheer her up a bit.
"Tell me something you've never told anyone before."
He thought about this for a moment. She probably wasn't going for the fact that he despised coconut, so that left one obvious secret. It made for an icebreaker, for sure."Well, well. Actually there is something. I do trust you though, so here goes. Prior to my residing at the Mansion and meeting you, I used my abilities for..less than noble reasons. If I found myself starving or wanting to get into a hotel or something similar in winter, I would rarely fake seizures and then make people seize. I would then relieve them of the funds I needed." He paused for a moment, hoping she wouldn't freak out, though understanding if she did.
As he paused, he remembered lying there in the spotlght made by the street lamp in the park, smiling at Petunia as the courier came wheeling along. He was glad he wouldn't have to do that anymore. He then added, " I hope that doesn't shock you, but that is definitely a secret I have been carrying. I want to be completely honest with you, though."
She continued to speak of the various uses of his ability in a combat situation. He was very pleased with the idea of setting up someone for one of the resident powerhouses to knock down. Grinning a bit, he replied" I just can't get over your ability to improvise, Neena. Remind me never to fight you." He was glad he was gaining more control. It made him feel more like part of a team than the 'nerve guy'.
Neena then queried him over the range to his powers. "Well, I've never tried it out of sight of a person. I remember dropping someone at ten feet before, though he was no trained mutant. Of course, there are also the full on seizures. I had been watching what happened to you with interest because it was new to me. Generally, seizures come only with touch. I'd recommend not going for that today, only due to your having already been affected. "
He waited for a moment, wondering if the mention of concern would just make her more determined to try.
"I don't think I could take you with me." She swallowed and buried her face against his shoulder. "So stay."
All things come to those who wait. The waiting was worth feeling Maya's breath against his shoulder. He leaned back into the foliage.Rather than stab him repeatedly, he happened to find a soft spot, cradling him. He wrapped his arms around Maya and sniffed at the silky gossamer strands below him. He smiled, his chest buzzing with an electricity he hadn't felt before.
"So, if we are staying, what would you like to talk about, Miss Maya?" He purposely teased her slightly, trying to replicate the formal tone of speech she had used to Katrina earlier. His hand caressed her back slowly as he waited to hear her response.
Garrett was thankful as Maya appeared to come around somewhat. Her fingers unknotted from her eyes when he asked her to look at him. She had listened to what he had to say and seemed to be open to it. It was an incredible relief for him. She then looked at him deeply. Her eyes and his were joined in a moment of clear and real connection.
To Garrett, the brief union had seemed to drag on for a long time. He had yearned for her to look at him in such a manner. She seemed to still be fighting herself over her words. When she finally stammered out that she didn't want him to leave, he scooted next to her. He put his arm around her tiny waist and looked into her eyes again. " I won't leave you, Maya. If you leave, I will follow you. Anywhere."
He looked at her a moment and leaned in and gave her a soft kiss. It was brief and closed, but it contained what he couldn't seem to say. He then smiled and said, "I should have a great time leaving this place in the darkness. Some of us can't just float through." He looked around at the walls of thorns and smiled, a small chuckle leaving his lips.
She pulled her hands away and hid there behind them, pressed firmly into her eyes. "What are you afraid of Maya? That you will fall for me and I won't be there to catch you? Have I disappointed you yet?" He shifted his weight to one side as he tried to look through her fingers and see her eyes. He wanted to pull her hands away, but that wasn't how you treated someone you cared for. He had to be as delicate as possible so that the fleeting breeze didn't blow away.
" Please, Maya, look at me. I mean you no harm. I have no plans of going anywhere. There are plenty of attractive girls here at the Mansion, but I chose you. Your smile, your warmth, your intelligence, your big, deep heart. I love all of those things. I don't want to scare you away. Not at all. I just want to know we are on the same page here."
He just wanted to know that she felt it too. He wanted to know that he wasn't just being foolish or getting far ahead of himself. No, he didn't love her now, but he knew one day he would. He wanted her to be there on that day to say it back.
She half heartedly apologized for snubbing him. It was no longer relevant to him as she was here now and it was a thing of the past. She then admitted that she had spent time looking all over for him. This made him feel a twinge of guilt for leaving abruptly but at the time he was in such a state of confusion.Nevertheless, the time was now and she was here.
He had mentioned the topic of feelings and a cacophony of words fell from her lips. It was apparent that the topic caused her confusion, but he had to have some clarity for both of their sakes. She went from topic to topic, seemingly avoiding the one at hand. She seemed like she wanted to dissolve on the spot and become the wind, but instead she shined with the clarity he had sought.
"That's a lie." She breathed through her fingers. "I want to know. Why can't I just leave you alone?"
He smiled at her and took her hands gently in both of his, looking into her orbs of honey. "Our time together has been short. However, every moment has meant something to me. I feel my heart pound and the blood throbbing through my veins when you call my name. I often find myself thinking of you. I wouldn't dare to say a word about love as we haven't known each other long enough for that. I hope we continue to get to know each other, though. Don't you feel those things too?"
It was good deal to unload on her but he had initiated this and finding out what was going on was the only way to find peace.
Garrett listened closely to the comments and ideas that Neena had given him. The second one, the hammer hit. He didn't really recall it now. It seemed like something that had happened to someone else or was a story. He would have to look into it at some point. He smiled and snickered with her when it was appropriate, but could tell she was still in pain. He didn't like the idea, so as she spoke about the possibilities of meditation on the fly, he nodded, his eyes blinking rapidly.
He thought of the warm winds of Maya. At once, he remembered when he had made her elbow right. "All parts equal.", he said, his hand waving over Neena's image. He focused on her legs, which were not hurting and rapidly duplicated the normal neural pattern throughout her body, leading and ending with her head. He hoped this would relieve her symptoms.
He looked over at the DocProf. Though he respected his opinions, he also knew that Neena was tough and could take it. " Doc, I just stabilized her neural activity. Let's give it a minute and see if she feels any better before calling everything off?" He looked back at Neena, waiting to see if his exercise in quick meditation as well as neural repair had been successful.
He heard her make a sound of shock and then call his name out. The telltale jumping in his heart and throat made him smile."Yes. Come in." He knew what was going to happen even as it occurred. A kind of smoke began to filter in through the spaces in the brambles. It was her. The setting sun's radiant lights filtering through her incorporeal body was magical to observe.
He watched her slowly and deliberately form, first as a blurred image. When she asked if he was there, her voice sounded at once distant and in his ear. Her image began to materialize further, her warm golden eyes the thing he was focused on. It took a few moments and Garrett resisted the urge yet again to move his hand through her. Like a hologram finally coming into focus, she was there, next to him.
"Some hiding place."
" I wasn't hiding." He wiped the grit and tears from his face with his sleeve, exposing his blood covered palm." I remembered Maya. I remembered my parents and some of my childhood. I used to play in patches like these as a boy. I remembered that my middle name was Theodore." He was smiling a toothy grin, his eyes still moist.
She asked if he was okay. He nodded."I'm much better than okay. I am sorry for going off like that. You turned your back on me and snubbed me. It had never happened before and I didn't know how to deal with it. I hope you weren't worried." His eyes softened and he reached over and took her hand.
" I think we need to talk a bit. We have been dancing around our feelings for a while now."
The day stretched long. Time was no longer an issue. His job, the Mansion, his world previous to this moment was irrelevant. His hands had quit bleeding and he had allowed the pain to return slowly. So many years. He had been focusing on his parents, remembering their faces. Tom was built like an iron gorilla, his face beset with a salt and pepper beard and mustache. He was also bald. Garrett rubbed his head in remembrance. Betty had short dark air and the kindest eyes ever. In fact, that's all he could see was her eyes, but it was more than enough.
He remembered sitting on a pontoon boat with them as it floated on the large pond behind the property. The sun shining down, Tom telling dirty jokes while he fished, Betty telling Garrett to disregard them, scolding her husband. Garrett laughing until his ribs hurt. The tears flowed freely as Garrett remembered. His first kiss with Dee Dee Hildebrand, out in the wild places like these.
The light of day had reached its peak and was sliding down the horizon now. He couldn't bring himself to leave, the memories seeping in as surely and slowly as they had seeped out. His thoughts returned to Maya. They had spent alot of time together recently. Whether or not anything ever came of it, Garrett knew where his heart was and knew that it skipped a beat every time she said his name. He shouldn't have walked off like that, but he had never been snubbed like that by her. It was a dose of reality he hadn't been ready to take.
No one had ever touched him in the special way that she did . He wondered if she even knew what she was beginning to mean to him. He moved some of the vines aside so he could rest against the wall, his back beginning to ache from the long bit of sitting. His thoughts began to float freely, imagining finding his parents again and bringing Maya with him to meet them.
"Augh!"
He snapped at once to the present moment. The light had gone even further now and he could hear her in the brambles. "Maya? I'm in here." Whatever the cost, he had to get some of these feelings out in the open.
