The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The echoes noticed the change in sounds shortly after reaching the dead end, and it forced Evelyn to rethink her strategy. The smells grew less important as the sounds of wings stood out to her.
Not just a few wings. Lots of them.
Uncertain what was following, Evelyn quickly processed her map of the maze. Considering where this dead end fell, she moved forward and quickly took two lefts. She narrowly avoided running back into the smell monster, and her path took her at an angle away from the wings. It was only a momentary escape, however. She was trapped on the ground, weaving through the obstacles, but her new opponent was by passing everything. It would catch up soon enough, all she could do was figure out the best place to stage a defense.
She would rather that defense not be at a dead end with an incorporeal monster.
Her grip on the sai grew tighter as she ran, and it took effort to stay calm. This was more than a test to her the longer it went. The problem with the echoes was that everything felt real. There was no way to separate the danger in the Danger Room with a real life battle. A mistake was no longer failing. A mistake could be injury or death. It didn't matter if it was temporary, with the playbacks making the pain feel infinite. As she chose to stop behind a corner section of the wall, the T in the path giving her several directions to run, she focused on the incoming shapes.
[Number incalculable. Species moving with singular purpose. Insect-like hivemind?] She scanned the figures for any central control, a specific figure she could target. But nothing stood out, the massive black blob swooping down towards her with a rumbling cry. She stepped back for better balance, squared her shoulders, and swung for the first almost bat-like animal. 1.
The echoes buzzed, attention split between the multiple targets, and Evelyn kept her back to the wall as she jabbed with both her weapon and her forearm. A solid collision to one of the creatures sent it tumbling to the ground, followed by a pained screech as the sai sliced through the wing of another. 2, 3. But the rest were on her, numbers breaking through her defenses. Claws grabbed hair, teeth nipped at clothing, and screeches rattled her hearing and disoriented the echoes further. In the midst of the struggle, she caught the strong smell of fur and gargling growl getting closer.
She started retreating down one of the paths, swing in shorter, faster movements. 4, 5, 6. Gawwww I hope these things don't have rabies or something... She kept moving just in case, careful not to let any latch onto her skin. The gargling was still following, and the hissing of monster number one sounded closer, although she couldn't tell how close over the clamor of the flying creatures. Her arms and legs burned, but she ducts and dodged, relying on the muscle memory she'd been building.
The test seemed to vanish from thought, images of the riots, the sewers coming back to mind. She learned to fight for a reason. This was survival now.

On normal days, working at the museum was not a particularly challenging job. There was cleaning. There was organizing. There was avoiding patrons and especially the obnoxious patron's children. But today was not turning out to be one of those days.
It started with a mutant. Normally, Evelyn was ok with other mutants. They minded their own business, and unless they were sleeping on the artwork, no problem. But this mutant had a temper problem. Evelyn only caught the tail end of the conversation, as the yelling worked it's way to the second floor exhibits, but the accusations of the 'prejudiced venue' were clear enough. As she slowly made her way to the stairwell, the conversation became clearer.
"You should be ashamed of how blind you are. You are just giving me a hard time because I'm a mutant. You don't like mutants, do you?!"
"We're fine with mutants, you just need to calm down sir."
"No, you have a problem with my species don't you. I bet you kick all the mutants out huh?"
"That's not true. We even have a mutant on staff! See?"
The man turned, yellow eyes focused on Evelyn as he scoffed with laughter. "You call THAT a mutant? You think I believe that? You don't have any mutant artwork, you're just purists with your human paintings and historical 'mummies'. Not even a good dinosaur in the mix." The more he yelled, the brighter his eyes seemed to glow. Evelyn's echoes were buzzing with warning.
And then, she found out what his powers were.
He took off running, bolting towards the stairs and racing into the nearby exhibition. Evelyn took a few steps forward to stop him, but a quick dodge and he was around her and in the exhibit. As she turned, the echoes watched his hand run across one of the nearby paintings, and her mind buzzed with distress at the careless action. It wasn't until the colors started melting and jumping out of the painting that the distress started to transform into horror.
Screams echoes down one of the hallways, and what looked like an oddly familiar ghost zipped past. [Ghost. Featured in artwork Chance Encounters at 3am] A oddly shaped bulldog napped at the heels of another patron. There was the distinct thud further down the galleries, and the crash of a shattering display case. Evelyn turned, a scream escaping her mouth as hooves narrowly missed her face. The paint strokes stood out even as she yelled, and in terror she glanced at the painting where the horse should be....
Rather than running out of the museum like the regular patrons, however, she rushed further inside, unable to process her disbelief. Her yells echoed through the halls as she hurried after the mutant. "Whatever you're doing, stop!" She yelled, dodging another horse as it raced through the narrow room.
It can't be! Room by room, chaos was erupting. Patrons frantically tried to defend themselves, and Evelyn watched in fear as she tried to catch up to the source of the chaos. The paintings!

Usually, having walls appear out of the floor in front of you was a bad sign. Evelyn, thankfully, was not claustrophobic, or the tower forms could have given an immediate boxed in sensation. But with the monster lunging she had been preparing for, and the disorienting smoke creatures somewhere lurking off to the side, walls meant temporary safety. Unfortunately, it meant there was now no way to reach her second sai. Turning slowly, she assessed the situation. The echoes could still hear the snarls and sounds of her assailants, but they were muffled by the thick forms. The lights seemed less distracting now that there was something solid blocking some of the light. Instead of wandering in the bright reflections, she was surrounded by new shadows.
Smells lingered, shifted, and Evelyn tried to tune in on what was happening. Three walls surrounded her, and now there was only one opening. A few careful steps forward revealed a split in the path, and she paused, carefully checking around the corner. To either direction, the path was currently empty.
But only one direction was towards her missing weapon.
Turning left, Evelyn carefully continued forward, listening to the sounds moving on the other side of the walls. At one point, she could have sword the hissing creature passed right next to her, scratching at the barrier bitterly. She continued though, taking one turn into a dead end, then another left. In her head, she tracked her footsteps, formulating the blueprint of the maze. Her back straightened, her mind cleared, and her focus grew more mathmatical. She could do tactical challenges like this. Finding her way shouldn't be a problem.
But pausing a few walls from where she remembered the sai falling, the scent of the first monster grew stronger. Somehow, she had a feeling she couldn't just sneak her way through this.
The growl echoed through the wall as Evelyn shifted into a defensive position, setting aside her mental map as she slowly crept around the corner. The smoke-like creature was there, but it was impossible to tell whether it was facing her or not. It made a rumbling noise, moving forward in an aggressive manner, and Evelyn responded quickly, feigning left then summersaulting under it, slipping slightly as she snatched the second sai and stumbled out of it's attack range. A--arm, paw, limb?--lashed out, and she brought the weapons together in a protective barrier, the blow ringing against the metal and sending vibrations up her arm. With training, she would learn to turn that block into an attack, but for now she just turned it into a done with you, running away now retreat.
Two more rights, a left, and then she found her second dead end. It would be a bad place to be stuck if the monsters caught up...

It took Aiden a bit to process the name, and Evelyn could see the wheels turning in his head. Evidently, he was enough of a reader that the author was familiar, but not so much that it came to mind readily. Evelyn was once more grateful for her echoes. She didn't have to deal with such long delays remembering typically.
>>"Sherlock Holmes?"
Evelyn smiled. "The one and only. I'm a bit partial to most detective novels though. I sort of like the problem solving. Although the echoes can take some of the fun out of the poorly written ones. It's like having a backseat driver pointing out all the mistakes." She shrugged, surrendering to the fact that there was little she could do to teach the echoes tact.
"I actually haven't watched enough movies to understand the changes. I find movies are even worse about accuracy and drives my powers crazy. I have heard of E.E. Knight. Don't think I've had the change to read anything by them yet."Don't think Was a phrase that came more out of reflex then anything. The echoes were certain she had never read a book by E.E. Knight. But that was something fairly easily remedied.
As the monsters stayed out of reach, Evelyn took a moment to breathe. As much as the smelly second monster had made her nervous, it lacked the distinct lightning sounds to keep her concern. This was a tryout. Mirror wouldn't let the tryout use electricity against her. Right? Right. That didn't make fighting it much easier though.
She took a swing at it, more out of warning than anything else, and the monster growled low, cloudlike form stretching and condensing like it was readying to attack. Evelyn's eyes were struggling to stay focused now though. The light show was giving her a headache, and the echoes were becoming less decisive about what they wanted to focus on. [Hissing monster, circling around. Smelly cloud circling, gradually moving closer. Lights with no tangible source. Chocolate smell still evident.]
She swung again, this time her weapon passing through the cloudlike beast. Was the cloud part of it? Was it a mask? Questions rushed to the surface as she regained her footing and stepped backwards. The snarling continued, and something lashed out, hitting her on the side and buffeting her back. Ok, so it could be solid. She just wasn't sure how to--
[Incoming attack.] This time, she used her powers for the time to think she needed. The figure lashed out, and she focused on the solidifying form. With a swing she stabbed downwards, feeling the sai strike something more solid. The animal screeched and yanked backwards, sai momentarily jerked with it, then clattering a few feet away. In the chaos, the second animal had lurked closer, and the warning echoes got her to turn only for a moment when the tail knocked her flat on her back.
Training, training! She fell, she rolled, got her feet under her, and stabbed out with the remaining sai. She struck the creature and the cry and writhing of pain stood out amongst the other senses. She got to her feet, staggering slightly as she freed her sai, and focused on her adversary. She was down a weapon, and now the monster was in front of it. She felt like this could go downhill fairly quickly.

Trying to fight with the disorienting input from the echoes was like trying to do a dance with a hangover. Evelyn didn't know how she was managing, but somehow she didn't get eaten alive by the first monster. The sai in her hand made the echoes focus more though, and somehow, her body responded to the battle instincts she was developing.
Even though this was a simulation, her body didn't know that. She felt pain, she remembered it, and getting hit by something that would hurt and reliving that agony made her try that much harder to avoid the sensations again. As teeth snapped at her, and the echoes picked up on change in smells and danger warnings rose. Something else was appearing. She saw a cloud in the flicker of lights and backed away slightly.
Please....don't be lightning... She inwardly cringed. The last thing she needed was to reboot her brain today. A wayward flick of a tail hit her across the leg with a stinging strike and she focused back on the closest adversary. The echoes split their attention, trying to keep her alert to the danger from both sides. Now the smells were easier to tune out at least. There was something tangible to fight.
Jaws appeared close to her hand and a stab of the sai into the mouth caused a cry of pain from the creature. She jerked her weapon back before it could retaliate and hissing was answered by another animal noise growing closer.

It was probably a good thing Evelyn couldn't hear Call. Knowing you were accidentally staring somewhere awkwardly on a ghost was just about as embarrassing as doing so to a human, and so far their conversation had avoided many of the social blunders she seemed to fall into. She glanced at Clay though, wondering what the ghost might be saying. His facial expressions didn't reveal though, having none, so she gave up trying for the moment and shrugged her shoulders at his remarks. "Perhaps someday the echoes might adapt to hear them. I think knowing there is something there is a good step. I've learned that while being a mutant few things are ever impossible."
She was talking to a skeleton, after all....
"Where would you like to look first? The mansion isn't super exciting, more like a really fancy house I'd like to think. I mean, there is the kitchen, and outside there is a pool, the living room...I think there is a piano lurking somewhere..." She started for the door, waiting for the echoes to recall the necessary memories of the schools blueprint. She moved mostly on instinct in the meantime, driven by the passive memories.

Locke's remark took Evelyn a little by surprise, but the echoes quick analysis of his body language took away the rest of her fears. It was odd when someone managed to 'read' what she was thinking, but even people without echoes could be perceptive to facial expressions and nervous actions. Evelyn was clearly confused by what was going on, and it didn't take echoes to know that. Still, she had to pause at the remark before she nodded. Although fighting without shoes still didn't make much sense to her. Making her feel awkward to fight seemed like trying to drop her at a bottom of a hole and tell her to climb out. It felt like building some stairs would be useful first... But she wasn't the teacher. She was just the student in this situation.
The next question required actual answering, and Evelyn rubbed the back of her neck as she tried to think of how to explain herself. "I don't think I can really do power based training at this point. I mean, my powers don't turn off. It's all mental. My powers are mental I mean. Not me. What's a Fluffy?" She felt her stomach turn over and took a few deep breathes, trying not to make a fool of herself. She felt like she was back in school, standing in P.E. class. As the teacher gave instructions about their lesson the dread in her stomach would continue to grow.
She hoped a Fluffy was something fluffy.... but with all the dirt and earth and martial arts talking it sounded more like a joke than anything else.

As Evelyn moved forward, she struggled to identify what the sound had been up ahead. It seemed familiar, and she felt drawn to it but couldn't quite decide what it was. In her head, there was too much information clamoring. [Fresh baked bread. Purple lights. Ground moving. Chocolates. Disco with bread?] Not helpful! She would have sighed, but then they spoke up more intently as the noise behind her grew louder.
[Hissing approaching. Danger. Recommended course of action run!]
...Sai...
The warning and the identity of the sound clicked at the same time, and Evelyn staggered at the mental collision. Instinct tore her two directions, but training helped push her forward, running ahead and reaching where she had heard the weapons. She needed to fight whatever was here. Running would take her straight into the disorienting room with nothing to defend herself with. As her hand touched the metal handle, the hiss turned into a louder snarling sound, and she scrambled out of the way as the air swished with an attack that barely missed her arm.
Back pedaling, she shifted the sai into a battle ready position in her hands, pulling on the memories of training she had. She spent time with a variety of teachers: Mirror, Kyle, Locke. Each one taught her something new she needed to use now. She tuned out the smells and lights around her, focusing on the sounds of the creature circling her. Something moved forward, snapping, and she turned the sai, driving the thick handle at the passing creature. The lights made it impossible to make out the shape, but the snarl was somewhat reptilian, and mostly angry.
Backing up a few steps, her adrenaline was racing, but she tried to stay focused. She needed to pass this. She wanted to prove to herself and to Gawain that she could stand on her own feet.

Rather than making more sense, the simulation grew more confusing. Her senses were trying to take in what was happening, but none of it added together. It was a problem with too many variables and no question immediately coming to light. The sound was moving, quickly circling while the room itself began to change.
As light returned, relief immediately vanished as the kaleidoscope effect made her brain dizzy and nauseous. The light was split into pieces, just like the movements and smells she was encountering. The only way to face this was to treat it like the real world. Something was causing this confusion of the senses. She needed to decide what was masked in all these distractions.
Focus...you can do this... She told herself through the echoes clamor, and picked out what was hidden. The hissing was too loud, but distantly, she thought she heard metal on metal. It was different, not quite as notable, almost lost as the echoes struggled with the pattern of lights going across the room. She started forward, ignoring the movement around her and the smells. She tried to focus on what didn't immediately seem important. At the same time, she didn't shut up the echoes entirely. She let them work, keeping an eye out, but tried to redirect them at the same time to what she felt was important.

>>"Give up sleeping...?"
The comment was immediately followed by the echoes picking up on his realization that was probably a bad question to ask. It took Evelyn from her sensation of dread quickly to relief, with little transition between the two. She was going to have emotional wiplash after this conversation. She wondered if there was medical treatment for that. Or emotional treatment. Maybe they'd both just suffer emotional concussions for awhile...
>>Is there anything in particular you like to read?"
Evelyn gave a wryly grin. "I'm partial to the works of Arthur Conan Doyle. But I enjoy a variety of things." She said, wondering if he'd recognize the famed Sherlock Holmes author or not. He seemed like a reader so probably.

Ok, so maybe he didn't hate the idea of working with her. Well, at least right now he didn't mind. Maybe once they actually started training he'd regret it, and then they wouldn't get along and would make the x-men regret recruiting them both.
That was a little on the pessimistic side. The echoes returned to reading his body language. He relaxed as the subject changed and remarked on the books. "I enjoy reading... I probably have too much time to read though. Happens when you give up sleeping..." She shrugged. Not that she missed sleeping that much. Considering the dreams she had the concept of just 'sleeping' didn't really seem to occur to her anymore. Well, she had gotten to rest that one time when she was next to the adapted room. But the general 'knocking yourself out with your own powers' repercussions afterwards made it so she preferred not to try the experience again.

>>"Change could be ok."
The echoes picked up on his lack of believe in that statement. Evelyn gave a small shrug and fiddled with the end of her hair. "Whether or not it's ok, it's probably something we will have to learn eventually. Although I'd probably drive you up the wall training to. The echoes have a habit of being bossy." She felt like she was just going to be a problem one way or the other. Inwardly she kept second guessing things. The echoes felt they were logical and right. She wasn't always sure.
"So, you find any good books while you were here?" Another dumb question. Why were they trying? She should go draw...

Aiden relaxed, but as Evelyn kept talking, the agitation returned. She was really good at upsetting him it seemed... She looked down at her feet and rubbed the back of her neck. Not that she really had meant to be mean. Or had he thought she was meaning to? She didn't know anymore. She was tired of listening to the echoes today. They just seemed to make a mess of things. She tried to think of some way to remedy the situation...
"So, maybe sometime we can train together or something. Maybe you know, not just awkwardly trying to talk would help with the not stepping on each others emotional toes..." She said slowly. Ok, maybe that was a really dumb idea. But she didn't want to just keep upsetting the younger mutant. If they got caught on the same team bad feelings were going to cause problems in the long run.

Aiden was clearly uncomfortable with his ability to heal. As he explained though, she started to understand. It wasn't necessarily the healing itself, it was the incident that created it. His eye, his arms, both were memories he had to face when he looked in the mirror. She felt a surge of empathy, and gave a small smile.
"Hey, it's not that big of a deal. I mean, I still don't know much about my powers and I've had them my whole life. I think all of us are always learning. And I--" She tried to stop herself, feeling her powers pushing her towards remarking on something he hadn't necessarily said. She shifted then said it anyway. "I know what it's like to have memories you'd rather not have to deal with. Hopefully you don't have to have too many of those. Knowing you can heal is one thing but it's always better to never have to." She toed the ground, and shifted from foot to foot as her own memories pressed at the back of her mind.
