The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The blond woman resisted at first, but the chasing pack of canines quickly changed her demeanor. Together, they ran towards the end of the alleyway. The explosive mutant tried to disband the pack by tossing some balls of 'fun' behind her, but the pack had blood on their mind. Nothing was going to stop them. They reached the wall of the alleyway with the blond utterly confused. Good. It would make this less of a shock to her.
"Here!" Shade gasped, equally out of breath. He dragged her towards the dark corner. As soon as he entered it, the shadow mutant immediately blinked out of sight, but he continued to drag the blond in with him. Invisible arms wrapped themselves around the young woman.
"Grab my sweater. And whatever you feel, do not let go." Shade instructed. The dogs were only meters away. Shade could smell their breath.
"Hold on!" He shouted as the nearest dog leapt at them. Shade felt the teeth sink into his invisible arm as he 'jumped'.
Suddenly, reality was torn apart and then resealed in a moment. A second ticked by in which everything felt wrong. Up was down, left was right, inside was out. Shade thought he heard the yelp! of a wounded animal and then no more pressure on his forearm. Then reality seemed to appear before them and the two mutants were thrown back into the world, only it had changed. They were no longer in the alleyway. They were a few hundred yards away, inside a park of some kind beneath a large oak tree.
"F**k!" Shade exclaimed the instant they hit the ground. His arm felt like it was ripped to shreds. He was still invisible, but he stumbled beneath a nearby street lamp to survey the damage done to his arm. His body blinked into view before he remembered he had taken a partner along for this ride.
"Are you alright?" Shade asked the woman as he cast his eyeless gaze back into the shadow.
Shade was not embarrassed! And he did not get embarrassed! He got even. However, that did not change the fact that his ears and cheeks were beet red at the moment. And for someone who had finished high school "a couple years ago", she sure did talk about it a lot. But Shade kept his mouth shut. He was being professional. The only reason why he was in his boxers was to get the tattoo finished, and if he had to get completely naked for her to finish it then thats what he was going to do.
"Fine." Shade said, simply. He ignored the girlfriend comment. At this moment, the nearly naked shadow mutant did not even want to think about what she was talking about. Especially, since he was being professional!
With a near death grip on his draws, Shade slowly lowered his boxers and took a stoat stance of looking straight at the wall in front of him. He couldn't bear to look at the redhead with all his skin beared. Gosh, what he would give for a shadow right now!
As Shade rose from the unconscious officer, blood dripped off his clinched fists. Suddenly, the sounds of ferocious barking started to echo through the night again. It seemed the K-9 officer had managed to get back to the vehicle. The barking louder as the dog came streaking around the cop car, white fangs beared.
A trickle of fear ran down the back of the shadow mutant's spine when he saw the brown and black furred mutt. And like all criminals, Shade began to sprint in the opposite direction. You just don't mess with a crazed dog, even if you are a mutant.
"Come on!" Shade said, snagging the hand of the blond haired explosive expert as he dragged her towards a dark corner of the alleyway.
Oh great! Dogs! Shade thought to himself. He hated dogs, such wild beasts. Luckily, it seemed the mutant he had run into eariler had the sam idea as she quickly disabled the vehicle. However, that did not prevent the fact that he was literally looking death in the face. Too bad that the other mutant couldn't deal with that...
- "Hey swine, shoot and I drop it!"
The rookie cop looked at the large glowing ball of energy and was torn. They didn't teach them this back in the police academy. Shaking uncontrollably, he turned his gun towards the woman. It was opening Shade had been waiting for.
He sprinted towards the officer as the young officer found out too late that he could not spin back in time. A shot rang out in the night as Shade caught the cop in midstride. He tackled him and wrestled the gun from his control. Blinded with adrenaline, the night stalker forgot to summon a blade and just punched the cop over and over until he lost consicousness.
The shadow mutant was speechless. He snatched the picture that the redhead was annoyingly waving in his face. Then he groaned as he saw his mistake. Shade had been so focused on the extensive design that spread across his front and back that he had not even seen the tiny little ends that passed beneath the pants line of the person. It such a tiny part compared to the rest of the tattoo, just wrapping the ends up from the main design. And she didn't have to bark at him like that. People did make mistakes.
"Well then, I guess you are old enough to keep this professional." Shade replied, sternly as undid his belt and dropped his pants. However, he could not hide the red that was building up in his face from embarrassment. Turning to face away from the young woman, the shadow mutant gingerly pulled his boxers down to expose just enough of his behind for the redhead to finish her work.
"Just be quick about it." Shade said, as he leaned against the table. This was so demeaning.
The distraction was almost perfectly timed with Shade's strike. It was a good thing too, because those guns might have been turned on the most important threat which had been the shadow assassin. Gun shots went out, pinging off the ground and whizzing through the alley. Shade watched as a policemen attacked the other mutant. However, it appeared she could handle herself. That left three cops to go.
Suddenly, Shade was blindsided by a policemen and bulldog tackled to the ground. The cop was yelling something (backup, maybe?), but the night stalker was too busy trying to kill him to bother with his words. Shade sliced into his arm with a newly formed blade causing the man to scream in agony. He pulled something from his utility belt and a spark shot through the air. A taser! Shade dodged to his left as the man trying to jab it into his shoulder, then he swung his right fist into the man's face knocking him off of him. He sprang to his feet before the officer could recover. However, Shade was now face to face with a shiny pistol.
"GET DOWN! DROP THE KNIFE! GET ON THE GROUND! NOW!" The officer yelled, his hand in an iron grip around the weapon. Shade couldn't move he was stuck. Holding up with arms, the shadow mutant let the black dagger slip through his fingers as he stared eyeless at the policeman.
Staying still proves to be a harder command than Shade thought it would be. The tattoo artist started working the ink in along his back which was not so bad until she got to his spine. The pain caused him to arch a little everytime she moved the ink. Next, she turned him slightly and moved to his arm. As she applied the design there, the ink almost tickled him pleasantly, and he had to force himself from wiggling. However, it was a different story when she moved to his ribs.
Oh! That hurt! Shade thought to himself for the hundredth time as she moved the ink through the delicate skin. His abs were getting a workout from the constant flexing as it was the only thing that seemed to dull the pain, and it was not by much. He was oh-so-happy when she finally started working on his chest. At least, it gave his abs a rest for a moment before she returned to torturing him as she finished the design right above his pants line.
It had taken a few hours for Allison, working her mutation constantly, and Shade was sure she must have been tired, especially with the detailed work she was doing. Plus, she looked stiff from the constant kneeling and bending. As she got up, Shade took a glance at the supposively finsihed product.
"It looks great, especially for a girl who isn't even out of high school yet." Shade joked with a chuckle. Then she told him to remove his pants...what?
"Woo, woo! Slow down. You want me to remove my pants?"
Shade watched as Miles face changed between horror and disbelief. Maybe, it was a good thing the youngster did not know the full truth about the Sanctuary...and the fact that it was a front for a murderous mutant organization. The shadow mutant mentally reminded himself he should be careful who he talked to about the Order's dealings. He had become too accustomed to only talking to people who were in the Order. He had almost forgotten that there were others in the Sanctuary who were not as inclined to the death of pathetic humans as the bloodthirsty Orderlings.
Speaking of which, Shade wondered how the other members would take it if they were to discover of Miles's mutation to raise the undead. Of course, many would jump at the idea of an undead army to strengthen their. And Lady Syn would be absolutely thrilled to have such a resource at her disposal. Should he tell the dark queen about their new arrival and his extraordinary ability?
Chuckling genuinely at Miles's impression of him (Did that confuse the boy's thoughts more? Good.), Shade redirected his attention to the movie for a moment but quickly returned his blue eyes to Miles. The movie was in one of the boring 'love' scenes where the hero and his girl finally meet after being separated. Stupid romantic nonsense. Shade hoped the zombies killed them all.
"You know, you would be careful you knows about your mutation. Others mutants might want to use you for their own gains." Shade said, the smile fading from his face to a stone cold gaze. It was not a threat. It was statement.
"Is that why you came to the Sanctuary? For protection?"
"Well if you don't want to play nice..." Shade whispered softly. His face stoned over as he flipped his blade around in his hand. Pulling her arm back, the shadow mutant drove his blade into her chest. The young woman's sharp demeanor changed instantly into a gasp as he stabbed her again and again. Seven times, Shade drove the blade into her heart before she slopped over, lifeless. Releasing her wrist, the woman collasped onto the parking lot ground in a leap. Wiping the blood off his hand on her shirt, Shade quickly slipped the address out of the woman's pocket. Now it was time for the motorcycle man.
He had heard that the man was suppose to dump the bike into the Hudson. Knowing the quickest way there, Shade quickly slipped into a shadow and 'jumped' through the shadows until he was standing near the water's edge. This was the nearest spot from the Hudson River to the night club where Xavia had sang that night. If he was really doing to dump the bike, it would be hear. Closing his eyes, Shade listened for the roar of the engine and felt for the trail of light from the headlight that was sure to annonce the slick man's arrival.
Shade was trying everything to get his hearing back. Wiggling his ears didn't work. Neither did trying to clear them with his finger. Presently, he was trying to pop them to see if that would work. However, his attempts were interrupted by the flashing of red and blue lights. That had to be the authorities showing up. Shade was safe, invisible to the human eye as long as...Damn! The shadow mutant saw the trail of a flashlight sweep across the alley. He had to move before the flashlight found him.
'Jumping' a block away to another alley, Shade came out of his 'jump', stumbling a little more than usual. His head was starting to hurt from the constant ringing, and he was starting to fear he might be deaf for life. A growl escaped his throat and rumbled in his ears. He did not like this feeling at all! Staggering to the edge of the alley, Shade looked out to see the blond woman he had just left surrounded by police. They had their guns drawn and things were not looking good for his former enemy. However, she was a mutant. And Shade couldn't stand for one to be killed.
A blade was sent fly through the air and stuck into the back of the nearest office's head. Before he hit the ground, Shade was already on the run and jump-tackled another officer. A blade severed his throat as they both smashed into the ground. Looking up, the shadow mutant wondered how the young woman was fairing.
Even though Shade had yelled at the top of his lungs at the explosive mutant, he could barely hear what he himself was saying. The ringing in his ears was horrible and he only just managed to understand hismelf due to the vibrations traveling up from his throat to his ear canals. He was certain the blonde haired woman was having just as much a problem of hearing as he was. Staggering to his feet, Shade slight felt rather shaken from the explosion and his inner ear was malfunctioning due to the recent, violent assault shaking the sensitve membranes.
He knew he had to get away from the area before the cops showed. Screw anything else. The last thing he needed right now was jail time, and he was certain the cops had at least one warrant out for his arrest. He thought he heard the other mutant say something, but he wasn't paying attention. All he wanted to do was get into the nearby alley so it could block out the moonlight and he could disappear from view entirely. He could also teleport out if necessary. Following the blond haired woman, Shade felt the cool sensation as his body completely disappeared from view. He staggered behind a dumpster and collapsed onto the ground.
It should be safe to recover for a few moments here. He thought as he leaned against the dumpster, straining his ears to hear anything beyond the constant ringing.
Shade really wasn't thinking about shame. What was to be shameful about taking his shirt off in front of people. Yeah, he might be very white, but he had learned to live with his physical mutation years ago. Plus, there was probably no one in the recreation room. There was never anyone in the recreaction room...well usually, no one was in the rec room.
If there was one thing Shade hated more than the light, it was walking. It was SO slow!! The shadow mutant knew how to almost instantly get around the Sanctuary at this point, after living here for over three years, and to walk the entire way across took several minutes to long. They finally arrived in the Rec room after an annoying four minutes. As suspected the room was entirely empty. Just the usual tables, chairs, and enteratinment devices.
Before picking a chair, Shade quickly refused his hoodie and black shirt with one swift motion, revealing the large scars that slashed across his back along with the bullet hole scar through his left shoulder. Tossing the hoodie and shirt onto the table, the shadow mutant grabbed a nearby chair and spun it around so he was facing away from Allison.
Shade decided to ignore the doubt-filled comments from the winged teenager. Even if things weren't exactly thoroughly planned out, fifty thousand dollars was a lot of money, and something the shadow mutant knew would persuade the cocky youngster to help out with the heist. Well, Shade did not know for certain that the teenager would help out, but he was pretty sure. Better yet, he was darn sure. And sure enough, Griff was hooked.
"How about...right after sunset? Around eight o'clock? Dropoff should be around nine." Sahde said, reponding to the time aspect of their meetup.
"If nothing else, I'll see you then." Shade said, turning on his heels and walking back towards the door leading off of the roof.
If the winged boy decided to observe the dropoff point the next night, he would see approximately ten gaurds patrolling outside of the service entry to the adajacent building. He would also easily notice the ridiculous amount of spotlights that were pointed in every direction. Stretched between the excessive amounts of spotlights were several large, orange power cords, swinging in the light city breeze. They were just waiting for someone to swing by and severe them. There couldn't have been a visible shadow in a hundred yards of the building. What he wouldn't see were the twenty more guards inside the complex, armed to the teeth with high powered rifles and fully automatic weapons.
The night had arrived and Shade had switched out his casual clothes for his battle gear. As he threw the large, oversized grey cloak over his shoulders, the shadow mutant 'jumped' out of the Sanctuary at half past seven and landed on the designated roof with five minutes to spare before the strike of eight o'clock. Glancing down at the bright lights flooding the complex below, a shiver of feel ran down the shadow mutant's spine. It was feeling that he did not get very often for he usually had nothing to fear. However, there were definitely not many hiding spots in that swarm of lights below.
Moving away from the hated light, Shade glanced around the rooftop, wondering if his 'partner' had chickened out on him. He really actually needed him for this mission to be a success, because there was no way he could get in there with all those lgihts.
"Okay, okay! Calm down, shorty!" Shade replied with a small chuckle. Man, the kid sure got worked up over making human zombies. The night crawler did not see what the big was about it. If the person was already dead, they didn't really need their body anymore, did they? And humans zombies would be much more convenient than dog zombies. Humans had opposable thumbs.
Shade shot a glance over to the youngster when he asked the question. Was he serious? A slaughter plant? Did he smell so bad that he reeked like cattle intestines?
"Uh...no...follow me around when I make my rounds for protection payments from the local businesses and residents around here. The Sanctuary has to generate money somehow. Sometimes, the collections don't go so smoothly, if you catch my drift." Shade replied cooely. He could always say he had to murder some uncooperative, but that would be too easy. Shade would let the young man come to that conclusion himself.
The glow were brighter as the ball of energy grew larger and larger. For a moment, Shade thought the thing might explode in her hand. However, she squirmed underneath him and managed to roll the ball out onto the pavement...and under a parked car.
"Sh*t!" Shade exclaimed as anticipated what was going to happen next. Trying to get enough distance between him and the car, Shade tucked and rolled away, dragging the blonde haired mutant with him. Rolling again, the energy ball exploded under the parked car, igniting the gas tank.
The entire street was lit up by the fiery inferno. All the car alarms on the block rang out as the shock wave washed over them. People's lights quickly flashed on in their houses and deserted their residences to see what had happened. Not to mention, Shade was certain someone had already called law enforcement. He tried to disentangle himself from the energy ball shooting mutant. Hopefully she would understand they had no important things to worry about now.
