The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Skydancer was happy that she had so obviously managed to make the little lizard girl happy. Life was so much more pleasant when joy was a part of it and it had been such a long time since she had experienced any sort of joy. A little voice at the back of her head told her that she didn't deserve happiness, not after what she had allowed to happen to her brother, but she tried to ignore it. "Do you think there are many of us freaky looking mutants around? I've only really met you and you seem pretty nice." Maybe it was time she embrace her state. Maybe.
Skydancer nodded at Dahlia as she began scurrying down the ladder. For anyone who happened to be looking, it might have appeared as if Skydancer jumped right from the top of the building onto the ground. In truth, however, what she did was a little less spectacular. Four tubes emerged from Skydancer's waist and shot down to the ground. They remained there, one on each corner, splayed out rather like the legs of a four legged spider. Once her landing was secured, she simply stepped off of the top of the building and was lowered gently to the ground by her four tubes. Sometimes it was good to be a mutant.
It took Skydancer about the same amount of time as it took Dahlia and she met her new friend at the bottom of the building. "So, care to lead the way to this Sanctuary place?" Certainly Dahlia was a different sort than the type Saph had suggested lived at Sanctuary, so perhaps the rest of the place was different than expected too. Strangely, she really hoped that was the case and she also kind of hoped Aura wasn't the psychopathic killer that he had accused her of being. Only one way to find out, however, and that was to actually go there and see for herself.

Bad enough that Devyn had awoken with purple skin in a strange room in a strange house with no one around that she knew, but now she had some kind of tentacle emerge from her chest. Try as she might she couldn't run away from it because somehow, impossibly, it was a part of her. A second purple thing emerged with a piercing pain beside the first and the two tubes started wrapping around each other, as if they were dueling to the death.
Devyn started hyperventalating. This couldn't be happening, it couldn't, it was impossible. None of this was real, it had to be some sort of bad dream or prank or...something! No, she had to calm down, she knew she had to calm down. Her sister was a mutant and her aunt so clearly she had to be too. Didn't she hear somewhere that mutants ran in families? Ya, that made perfect sense. So she was just some sort of really freaky purple mutant and if that made sense then surely everything else would come to make sense too, wouldn't? With that settled in her mind, she took several deep breaths and managed to calm herself. Sort of. At least enough that she wasn't about to pass out and the puple tentacle thingies stopped trying to fight each other.
“You’re different like me, are you from Mendocino? My name's Gina, and I don't think I've met you before. I-I-I can’t f-find my mommy. Or my brothers. H-have you seen them? Th-they don’t l-look like me.”
In her moments of panicked weakness, Devyn hadn't heard anything else the grey girl had said; because it was clear now that she was calm enough to take a good look, that the grey figure was a girl. "My name is Devyn and I think I'd remember you if I saw you. I don't know where I am either, I think maybe we were kidnapped. And...I guess I am different now..." Her voice radiated obvious confusion and she snuck a glance at the now calm tubes that had burst from her chest. They now rested on the ground, not doing much of anything except twitching every so often.
“I want my mommy,”
"I want my mommy too." With a great deal of awkwardness, Devyn patted Gina on the back to try and reassure her. It was pretty clear that she would have to be the one to figure out what was going on because Gina, whoever she was, didn't seem capable of it. "Okay. We can figure this out. Both of us are far from home in a strange place with no familair faces. I woke up purple and you woke up grey. I think someone kidnapped us, but I don't know why. Maybe...maybe there are adults around, I think we need to find one of them and then I'm sure it'll make more sense." Or something. Everything was so confused in her head, but that sounded like a very adult thing to say, didn't it?

Skydancer heard the blast in the distance just as surely as the cultists did, though whether that meant things were about to change for better or worse was not immediately apparent. When a familair mutant emerged from one of the hallways, she decided it was definately for the better. Whether the rumours of Aura being a murderer were true or not, right at that moment, Skydancer half hoped they were true. After all, she was fighting for her own freedom and the freedom of the other two imprisoned mutants.
It was impressive to watch as Aura formed her aura into blades and infuriatiating to be so helpless to actually do anything, especially as the M fueled cultists began to fight back. "Get me out of here, I can help!" because right at that moment, she didn't much care about being a good person and not hurting anyone. Right at that moment, she wanted to hurt her prison wardens, or worse because she had some inlinking what the were planning to do to her and she didn't like it one bit. 4 tubes emerged from her torso and slammed into her glass cage but, as before, they didn't make any difference at all.
A second figure emerged from one of the passageways, this one apparently the one who had caused the initial explosion. "Get me the hell out of here!" The rainbow feathered mutant continued to cower in his cage while the mutant in the plastic cage seemed just as eager to get out and help as Skydancer was.
The head cultust ignored the commotion around him and, ceremonial dagger in hand, rushed towards the cage of the electric mutant. For a moment his hands glowed white until an energy ball discharged, going right through the plastic cage and into the electric mutant's body. She fell to the ground in a heap, unconscious and the cultist rushed to open the cage.
Devyn was not allowed to cry. Future Olympians did not cry. She was stronger than that, tougher than that. She didn't train every single day of her life just to break down in panicked tears in the middle of the room right then and there. So what if she was in a strange place, with strange clothes and no one and nothing familiar around her at all, future Olympians did not cry. Period. So why did she feel like breaking down in tears in the middle of the hallway until her mom came to hold her and tell her that everything would be okay and that there was a logical explanation for all of it?
Devyn sniffled, picked a random direction along the hall and began walking. Tears did not stream down her face but it was a very near thing. She was going to be strong, she had to be. Any moment now her mom or Steven or Krysten or maybe someone from school was going to show up, explain that she was the victim of some elaborate prank and then everything would be ok again. That's exactly what was going to happen, right? The problem was that with every step she took, the panic got worse and that illusive logical explanation seemed less and less probable.
“Mommy! Dante! Where are you!?”
Around the corner Devyn went, confusion and fear quickening her steps, only to run into an equally panicked sounding small grey form. She fell to the ground in a painful heap. To make matters even worse, she felt a sharp pain in the center of her chest as a purple tube emerged from it and shot towards the little grey person. She screamed and tried to crawl away from the...whatever it was that emerged from her own chest.

The ability to change skin colour really was quite a fantastic one and an ability the the other reptile mutant Skydancer had met had been able to do as well. Not that she had seen all that many different mutant powers during her life, but she had to admit that it was secretly one of her favourite ones. As someone with former Olympic ambitions, the ability to draw attention to herself had historically been a posative goal of hers. Of course, the unfortunate part of being a mutant freak was that most of the attention she seemed to draw now was of the negative sort.
"Maybe I'm just still getting used to this," Skydancer replied, her voice sad. "Its not that I don't appreciate my power because I do. I can do fantastic things that would never have been possible before. But sometimes I hate it too, just a little bit. Because I'm a mutant everything that I worked for while I was still human was for nothing. I was this close to making it to the Olympic trials for gymnastics, but of course there are no freakish purple gymnasts competing on that level. You have no idea how many countless hours I spent in practice and then to have it come crashing down around me..." Her voice petered off into silence. Maybe she was just feeling sorry for herself, just like she had been for what seemed like ages.
Skydancer giggled at the thought of the floating mutant boy having to be tied down and then felt immediately bad for doing so. "Oh no, I must be a horrible person for finding that funny." The mortification she felt could be clearly heard in her voice.
"You mean, I could end up with more mutations," Skydancer asked. That wasn't something she had ever realized was even a possibility before and she had mixed feelings on it. Of course having powers were fun and it meant she could do amazing things, but she could no longer honestly desire more than she had. Once she might have thought about the possibility with eager anticipation, but that was before her greatest desire had become reality and that reality had been forever tainted. Her gift was also a curse and the thought of it changing brought with it the possibility of further curses and that was just about the last thing she wanted to have happen.
"I guess its good that someone cares about mutants and our plights," Skydancer answered after Koga had finished his speech. She gently disentangled herself from his embrace and sat on her branch. "I like my power, I really do. My tubes are stronger than any human and with them I can climb, well, not exactly effortlessly but a with a lot less effort than any regular human. I don't even mind my skin, so much, when I'm alone. I just wish there was some way I might be able to hide it when I want to. You know, I just don't always wanted to be known as that purple freak. Sometimes I just want to pretend to be normal again, just for a little bit." Boy did she ever sound pathetic. One little bit of kindness from a walking lizard and suddenly she was poring her heart out.

Devyn yawned and stretched, curled up in her warm cocoon of blankets. She didn't have school or practice this morning and as such it was a rare opportunity to sleep in. The other children got to sleep in on the weekends and had all the free time in the world, but not her because she knew, if she ever wanted to become an Olympic gymnast, the only way to do so was to practice every single day. So, even on the weekends, she was usually awake by 7 am so she could get a few hours of practice in because there was nothing else in the world more important to her. Her friends thought she was crazy, but she'd show them when her dream finally became a reality. Failure was not even an option to consider. But today, today was to be a rare day off and she planned to enjoy it.
Finally opening her eyes, Devyn looked towards where her alarm clock was normally kept only to realize it wasn't there. She strained her brain in confusion, trying to recall if she had moved it for some reason. Then she realized her bed was larger and softer than the one she normally slept in. Fear trickled into her mind and she tried to suppress it. There had to be a logical explanation here, she was sure of it. It was like when people woke up after staying somewhere and it took them a few minutes to realize why they weren't at home and where they actually were. Devyn was 12 now and her mom had let her have her first sleepover a few weeks ago, so that must be what was going on. She was at a sleepover and she just had to wake up a little more so she could figure out whose place she was sleeping over at.
Getting up out of bed, eyebrows furrowed in her attempt to remember where she was, Devyn put on her bathrobe that was hanging by the door. She didn't know anyone with a room quite like that one, did she? Was she going crazy? Maybe after she had engaged in her usual morning grooming and breakfast, maybe then it would all make sense. She went looking for her brush, something she never left home without and was further frustrated when it was no where to be seen. That's when she walked past the mirror and froze in place.
Devyn didn't have any hair. All of it, including her eyebrows, had fallen out. More shocking than her lack of hair, her skin had turned purple and there appeared to be weird purple veins or...something under it. She didn't know what the hell they were supposed to be and their existence terrified her. Her aunt was a mutant and her sister but...it didn't work like this! You didn't just wake up and turn into a purple alien overnight. Then there was the fact that not a single thing about this room was familiar and the robe she had thrown on was a couple of sizes too large. Her blood turned to ice as she fought down her rising panic. There had to be a logical explanation. There had to be. This had to be someone's idea of a sick joke. Maybe her brother or sister was pulling some sort of elaborate prank on her.
Skydancer walked to the door of the room she was in and opened it, secretly relieved that someone hadn't locked her inside. "Krysta, Steven if this is a joke one of you are trying to play on me, I swear I am going to kill you!" Except how could either of them, mutant or not, create a joke that elaborate? None of them had access to a giant building like she currently found herself in. Suddenly realizing that this wasn't like anything she could possible explain, Devyn found herself on the brink of tears.

Skydancer hadn't been living at The Mansion long; only a couple of weeks, but during that brief period of time she had started to gain a new perspective on her life. For example, while her skin might be purple (or at least the tubes under her skin) and she might not have any hair, her physical mutations weren't as bad as some. She didn't have scales, fur or feathers nor did she have any weird extra limbs, tails or other protrusions unless she was actually using her powers. So, while she might look like some bizarre and freakish alien, her proportions were still human and that gave her options. Options that might allow her to hide her oddities and actually bland in with the world around her.
Once Skydancer had figured out that she might be able to do something about her purple skin and lack of hair, she began asking around at The Mansion about where she might go for help. The hair part, well, that was easy and just involved finding a wig she liked. In fact, she was looking forward to that part of it, in a way she was lucky to be able to choose whatever hair her heart desired. The skin was both the more serious concern and the more significant one. It wasn't too unusual for women in the world to be bald, so while that would stick out as strange, it wouldn't necessarily mark her as a mutant. Purple skin, however, didn't tend to occur naturally in non-mutants.
Eventually Skydancer managed to get herself the name of Nate Holloway, the art teacher. With any luck he might have something in the way of body paint or some other sort of paint-like art supply that she could use to blend in with the world around her. With a confident walk and a very unusual feeling of optimism, Skydancer made her way to the art room and knocked on the door, hoping the art teacher was actually in at the moment.

Skydancer nodded at the masked man's description of the sort of paperwork she'd have to fill out. She didn't really have any secrets to keep, when it came down to it. It wasn't like she could hide the fact that she was a mutant and she was actually rather proud of her powers, despite everything else wrong with her life. Beyond that, what was there to hide? The fact that she was a gymnast? Somehow that didn't' seem the type of knowledge to really get her into much trouble.
"I don't think I'd mind a room-mate, except I'm not yet sure how long I'm going to be staying..." There was a lot to figure out and a lot to discover before Skydancer made any sort of definitive decisions about the new direction of her life. Such as checking out Sanctuary for herself, to start off with. No matter how good things at The Mansion were made to sound, she wasn't about to do anything until she had some first hand knowledge of everything important.
Skydancer followed Saphirus into the kitchen. When he finally removed his mask, revealing a face that wasn't so different than any human face she might see on the street, it was one more sign that maybe, just maybe, things actually were as he said they were. It was a start, at least. Skydancer accepted his hand for shaking. "Nice to meet you as well."
Skydancer yawned, the long nights living on the streets catching up to her. "I don't think I'm awake enough to really consider the X-Men at this time. I hate to sound ungrateful, but is there some place I can sleep?" She wasn't entirely sure how much longer she'd be able to remain awake, especially being in a nice warm, dry building like she presently was.

Skydancer had no reason to believe that Thomas was lying to her about his power, so she didnt' think twice about it. Hiding something he may have been, but use use could he have to hide the nature of his power? "Sounds like you could be a useful person inthe right situation. Could you track down wanted criminals?"
“Someone broke into our apartment! They’ve got to be real close!”
Skydancer half turned her head to get a better idea what was going on before she was counselled to keep walking and look normal. She listened to the advice, grudgingly, keenly aware of the fact that mutants like her were likely to be blamed for crimes for no other reason than the fact that they were mutants. If only she looked normal, just like everyone else, maybe then she wouldn't have to worry. The wig was supposed to help with that, but that didn't apear to be happening now.
Keeping her voice low and trying to remain casual, Skydancer continued to walk as she spoke. "What do you know about what's going on? Talk and be honest, you're power might not be too dangerous but I gaurantee that mine is." She wasn't used to being in a position of making threats and wasn't certain just how effectly it came off, but it had the advantage of being true. She had injured people with her tubes before and she could do so again, if it came to that.

Skydancer had gotten lucky with her first attack given the distraction the newcomer had so helpfully provided. She wasn't so certain that she'd be that lucky a second time, especially if the thugs were intelligent enough to coordinate an attack against her. While she might have enough appendages to attack numerous targets at once, she didn't have eyes in the back of her head and she could only split her attention so many ways at once.
"Glad to be of assistance. And while I have no doubt you could handle these idiots, today has been pretty slow. This is a good way to kill some time. Of course, how long a bunch of fools will last remains to be seen."
Her rescuer certainly seemed confident, perhaps even a bit cocky but as Skydancer watched him in action, she decided there was a reason for his cockiness. He was good, that much was quite clear by his display of fighting prowess, far more proficient than Skydancer's own efforts. Her power made her dangerous but what training she had was not centered around combat situations. The question pertaining to why he would even want to help her was something she would adress once the threat had passed.
Skydancer saw the two men heading in her direction and braced herself, trying to get the timing perfect. "If you just leave now you don't have to get hurt." Of course they didn't listen and, at about 10 feet from her, she whipped out two of her tubes, wrapping one around the neck of the first assailant and one around the waiste of the second. She lifted the two men far above her head, smashed their bodies together and dropped them to the ground. Both of them lay still, although she could hear their groans of pain so she knew she couldn't have done anything too serious to them.
"So who do I have the pleasure of saving today?"
The remaining two assailants froze at the display from the pair of them, looked at each other and proceeded to run in the opposite direction, leaving their fallen comrades behind. "The name's Skydancer. And who might I ask are you, who so gallantly came and saved this poor mutant?" She wasn't quite comfortable reigning in her tubes yet, but she offered a hand to her rescuer, if he decided to shake it.

He seemed a little full of himself and that wasn't exactly a trait that endeared Skydancer to people, although the fact that he was open to talking and not judging Skydancer was a counterpoint to that particular trait. Watching him, Skydancer was beginning to get the distrinct impression that something was up, if only she could figure out what that something was.
“But there is a topic far more relevant and important to a day with weather this fine that needs our immediate attention. Did your parents name you Skydancer, do you fly, or are you just an outstanding dancer?”
The question distracted Skydancer from her suspicions. "Skydancer is the name I gave myself. The name my parents gave me was Devyn but it just didn't seem appropriate anymore. As for flying..." Skydancer shook her head and smiled. "Not exactly. But it wouldn't be so far off as to say I can dance in the sky."
Thomas' actions caused Skydancer to glance down at the briefcase, a frown on her face. But of course, there was nothing unusual about that, nothing unusual at all, so why did she feel slightly uneasy about the whole situation. "So, what about you? What can you do?" Didn't quite seem fair to be the only one to hint at fantastic gifts.
