The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Rebecca was disappointed to realize she was having little success with her group. There were several dogs that have run off from home, and even more cats, but none of the Russian Blue variety. Siamese, a Bengal, three Tabbies. No sign of their new friend yet, but she kept scrolling, trying to hold onto hope.
To keep her spirits up, Becca stole glances toward the interaction between woman and beast that was happening to her right. The nameless kitten was doing its utmost to garner love and sympathy from Agnes, who was clearly making an effort to resist the adorable ploy. The chirping was a precious hallmark of a kitten who was still too young to meow correctly, and would have been enough to wear down the heart of a cat-lover like Becca, but for the stubborn hold out, there was the heavy artillery: purring.
It was the most calming cat sound, and in her opinion, the most associated with petting. She could have sworn she could feel the vibrations of the kitten’s purring through Agnes’s leg and the couch. It was hard for Becca not to put down her phone and pet the poor thing herself, but she would rather watch what happened next.
The kitten found its perfect spot on Agnes’s lap and curled up into a tiny ball of purring fluff. Even Agnes was not made of stone, it turned out, as she submitted to the kitten’s will and rewarded its efforts with head petting.
By the time her fingertips were scratching behind the delicate ears of her lapcat, Agnes realized Rebecca had given up all pretense of continuing her search through the group. She had scrolled back through over a month of missing pets, and their new friend was nowhere to be found. (She wished she could name the poor thing, at least temporarily, without Agnes throwing a fit about getting attached.)
A slender finger stopped the grinning redhead from saying something clever, even if the threat that followed was incomplete and completely toothless. Becca considered that a victory.
She needed a victory to counterbalance her defeat. ”Nae luck. Either th' wee hin' has nae owner ur... weel, 'er owner isnae lookin'.” Rebecca felt a pit in her stomach at the latter thought; the idea that someone would abandon a tiny, helpless kitten was sickening. Maybe she could just hope that, if there was an owner, they had not come across the page yet.
However, if they did, it would be good for them to have some sign that their pet was safe and sound. Becca got out of her social media and switched to her phone’s camera. While in vertical mode to best catch the kitten (and Agnes) in the shot, she gave fair warning with a quick, ”Smile!” before taking the picture. She returned to the group page and started uploading the picture while she typed a caption within the sight of Agnes.
IF YOU ARE MISSING THIS LITTLE CUTIE (THE BLUISH-GREY ONE, NOT THE BLACK HAIRED ONE,) PLEASE MESSAGE ME.
Proud of herself, she added other details underneath like the bread of the kitten, the size, and the area she was discovered originally.
”Ah can brin' th' picture tae local shelters an' vets tomorrow in case th' owner comes lookin'. In th' meantime...” Now the difficult part: how to explain to Agnes that she wanted to hold off on bringing the kitten to a shelter right away in case the owner reached out in the next day or two…

Becca was aware that she glossed over the more weighty topic of whether Maya’s girlfriend would still be there for her. She knew all too well what it was like to leave and return to find things and people not where you left them. As much as she wanted to be optimistic for Mirror, she could not bring herself to be the friend who told her, “It will work itself out,” or “You’ll cross paths again,” when she knew that might not be the case.
It was disappointing to hear why Maya’s girlfriend’s parents were disapproving. ”Sad truth. Hate’s e’rywhere these days.” Becca had been lucky: her parents approved of who she was, and Nessa’s parents had already handled both their children coming out at an early age. Agnes’s parents were hateful people, but prison did a good job of making sure she never had to meet them.
Maya moved their conversation forward and Becca gladly accepted. ”Ah’m back oan th' team an' awreddy one mess ay a mission in.” There were bad missions, and then there was anti-mutant armed security attacking her at a political gala. ”Ance Ah was back, Ah was stamped back in quick. Barely got tois words it ay Sam.” Cold Steel was the Leader of the X-Men, but Rebecca never seemed to find the chance to meet the man one on one. To her, he was the definition of stoic.
”Ah hink th' team jist needs people back,” she admitted to explain why it was likely so easy for her to return to her spot on the X-Men. ”Which is wa Ah’m doobly glad tae see ye. Ah loch it when ye hae mah back,” she added, grinning. There were inappropriate jokes she could make given their history, but she chose to refrain.
”Ye… are comin’ back, reit?” Maybe it was presumptuous of her to assume after Maya’s mysterious time away, she would be looking to jump right back into the action. The team could use her, but maybe it was not what she herself needed.

Ami was right, it had been a while. When they had both been spending most of their time at the Mansion, they would cross paths on occasion, but Becca’s renowned struggles with keeping touch affected many friendships. After the Ragman incident, she dropped off the social scene so she could recover. By the time she had righted her ship, she was up to her neck in college work, and then she was leaving the country for Grad School. That was how it went with too many of her old friends.
Except Ami. Thinking about it, the two had not talked since well before the Ragman abducted her. Rebecca had actually been avoiding Ami for a while, if she recalled correctly. She had been feeling awkward since—
Gawain. Right. Becca had been keeping her distance from Ami because she found the prospect of being around her uncomfortable given the one-night stand she shared with the other woman’s ex. To the present day, she never asked Gawain if Ami might have known about what happened, and she had no desire to ask Ami outright. It was not that she thought herself in the wrong; at the time, she and Gawain were both single, bitter young adults. That did not change how guilty she would have felt with Ami’s eyes passing judgment on her for her transgression.
It was not as though Becca intended to never talk to Ami! She was waiting for the awkwardness to pass, and fully intended to break the silence when she was ready. Her life ended up so shaken up that year, she never found the chance.
Maybe now, as full-fledged adults, they could make up for lost time? Ami greeted her by her ViewTube handle, which drew a blush to her cheeks that was thankfully covered by her mask. ”Jist glad tae be back. Yoo’re right; it’s been tae long.” She sounded friendly enough, but Becca pushed the thought back for the moment; they were there for a reason, and the robot... beetle… child… was their priority. Ami cast her eyes off in the distance, and Becca followed suit to spot a blue… object? Creature? A blue thing in the distance.
Ami was right; they needed to get closer if they really wanted to figure out what they were dealing with. ”Aye, let’s approach an’ see if we can handle thes withit things getting messy.” She wanted to be optimistic, but experience told her to expect mess. Gesturing with her shield arm, she smiled, ”Leid th’ way, Officer.” She was there to have Ami’s back, but she was the Police Officer, and it was her situation to take the lead on.

Agnes tried to act tough and standoffish about Rebecca’s detour to grab food, but she succumbed to the redhead’s bribe of pita stuffed with meat, as the gift-giver knew she would. It always paid to know the orders of the people close to you, and Rebecca had a good food memory. Gyro for Agnes, and Greek Salad with extra feta for Nessa. While all the date night dinners with Nessa were enjoyable, it was refreshing to eat a meat dish alongside another omnivore. Nessa was not the vegetarian to judge her eating habits, and likewise, Rebecca accepted Nessa’s choice, but it still took time to process having a girlfriend that would not steal bites from her meals. She remembered her mother’s confusion when she told her about how her girlfriend, by choice, would go without meat. It was a foreign concept in the Grey home.
The moment of watching a kitten nibble at her lost food was heart-warming, but Agnes apparently saw it as an opening. The easiest answer was to roll her eyes. ”Th' idea soonds lovely, except mah apartment only allows one pet per occupant. Try again, hun.” Agnes was plotting, but Rebecca could not understand why: they would find a home for the kitten, and it would take no longer than a day or two. Or a week. Two weeks, tops.
Once a sizeable chunk was missing from her gyro, Becca put her food down on the end table, wrapping it in its own foil to prevent the nameless kitten from scavenging. Rebecca took out her phone to look for the group page where she might find notices for missing animals. It was always depressing to see the notifications pop up on her timeline because she could do little to help in most cases, but now she could scroll with conviction, hoping to reunite someone with their pet.
With Becca occupied by her phone and no longer at risk of dropping food, the kitten realized the pickings were slim if it wanted affection or food from its current host. In an attempt to change its fortune and explore its new space, (comprised mostly of couch and legs,) the kitten took wobbly steps over Becca’s leg and hopped into Agnes’s lap. Looking up at the black haired woman, it extended its neck and propped its head upward so it could look up to her with big, longing eyes, chirping an affectionate petition for petting or more food. Either option would appease the couch’s new owner.

Leo’s defense of her accent earned him a grin from the teacher. ”Ah certainly hope sae. Nae 'at Ah cooldnae change it,” she clarified, switching over to the American accent she was constantly working on to diversify herself for Voice Acting work, ”But it takes more focus to improvise while I’m trying to keep this accent going. It’s far, far easier with a script and some practice.” It was not perfect, and a touch of her Scottish lilt could still be caught in her speech, but it was more passable than most American’s attempts at her own accent.
New questions came through, getting Pixelbecky to think about where she found her influences. ”Honestly, a lot ay it comes frae th' other creators Ah hae a lot ay respect fur. Th' Pow Block Party, GloveOnFoot, an' pretty much anyain Ah've collaborated wi'.” Rebecca spent a lot of her time on ViewTube watching other people’s stuff, particularly during her time recovering from the Ragman incident, so her “influences” were probably wide reaching across many different styles.
”Plenty ay whit Ah dae jist comes frae whit Ah’m loch when Ah am shootin' th' sh—um.” Before Becca could finish her thought, she remembered that she was technically still a teacher on site at her school. ”When Ah hang out wi’ mah friends. We gie nerdy ur we rant abit things, an' jist gab. Ah think mah channel is a conversation, sae Ah treat it loch one.”
Moving on, she heard the hate mail question and smirked. ”Ah’m a girl. Wi’ opinions on comics and video games and politics. Who is bi. And a mutant. Aye, Ah get hate mail.” It was the hardest part of adjusting to her life in a public spotlight. Everything she said was wrong, and she could see people telling her to kill herself in everything from her comments section, inbox, and actual PO Box. ”It wisnae easy reit awa'. Afair mah videos started gainin' traction, Ah was gettin' an occasional nice comment haur an' thaur. 'En Ah went viral, an' woke up tae comments sections filled wi' hate.”
It was easy to recall how overwhelming that sensation was at first. ”It was everythin'. Ah was wrang. Ah was dumb. Ah was somehaw tay much ay a prude an' a total slut. It was insults an' threats an' crass requests. Ah stopped makin' videos fur a few days coz Ah thooght Ah was in ower mah heed. But 'en Ah really looked at th' comments.
“Th’ hate was thaur, yes, bit it was smaller ‘en Ah gave it credit fur. Insteid ay focusin' oan 'at, Ah focused oan th' loove. Th' guid comments. E'en th' constructife criticism. Plenty ay fowk wanted tae support me an' see me succeed. Ah choose tae focus on th’ loove.” Pixelbecky smiled to the camera, hoping amidst the denizens of the internet, her fans were on the other end, as well. ”Another stoatin’ creator said it best: th’ more people yoo’re seen by, the moor yoo’ll be hated nae matter whit ye dae, sae ye might as weel jist dae yer own thing.”
The next question was more of a request for a job application. She giggled at the thought of her own assistant. ” Ah dunnae know abit an assistant, but if Ah can ever justify it, Ah micht tak' oan an editur. Sae keep hiner alife, guys!” The thought had crossed her mind to expand, (even if that just meant hiring on one other person,) but at the level she was at, and juggling two careers, a full time editor was just not a priority.

Maya absolved Rebecca of guilt regarding the mystery baby, but that did not change how her absence added more stress to her friend’s life. There was no point in arguing with Maya; she would not let Becca argue the case for why she was a bad friend, so maybe she had to just accept that they were going to be fine and she did not ruin everything.
Of course, she was testing the “not a bad friend” limits with her cheeky joke of another surprise child. Her reward for such a cruel but funny taunt was a poke to the ribs that caused her to squirm and giggle. ”Ah’m sorry, Ah’m sorry! It was tay open fur me.” It was probably a terrible thing to joke about given what Maya already went through, but she dropped the bomb on Rebecca first, so return fire was only fair.
Maya sounded sympathetic to Rebecca’s romantic revelations, which was kind of her, but honestly, she was already starting to accept where things were. Becca was ready to mention her new girlfriend and how things had started turning around for her, but got more interested in Maya’s love life.
There was a girlfriend, of course; as Gawain or Maya, they were a catch. Beautiful (or hansome,) fun, and adventurous. Rebecca’s timing in hooking up with Gawain, while possibly vulturous, was also fortuitous. The two of them catching each other right after breakups was probably the only way their rendezvous would happen before another girl could get her hands on the gendershifter.
Except Maya left without a word. It sounded necessary, but it was easy to put herself in the girlfriend’s shoes and picture the heartache of finding herself alone and abandoned. If it was Rebecca, the urge to run off and start fresh would be strong, but she would not say that to her friend. Instead, she focused on the last comment. ”They didnae like ye? Soonds ridiculous! Yoo’re totally th’ kind ay lass ur lad a girl woods want tae brin’ haem tae meit th’ folks.”
Her hand teasingly tousled Maya’s hair and she smirked. ”A total catch.” Maybe the girl was really gone, or maybe she would turn up eventually, but Maya would be alright. She would find the right girl, and until then, she had a fantastic friend back in her corner.

Rebecca was lingering in the training facility at the Mansion, hoping to keep herself sharp. She was not working through any issues at the moment; in fact, life was really beginning to stabilize. She was feeling successful in both her jobs, she had a supportive group of friends which included the former love of her life, and she was starting to feel closer with her new girlfriend, Nessa. She was not there to take out anger on a heavy bag or run through sadness and tears.
With all the time she took off for the Ragman incident recovery, college, and her trip to England for her Masters, Rebecca was just looking to ensure she was on her A game and in peak physical condition. Her return to the X-Men already led her into one dangerous situation, (which some could debate she played a role in causing,) and she knew well enough to know more trouble would follow soon enough.
Soon might be that day, as it would turn out. Being at the Mansion already allowed Becca to be the first one to receive the alert from their friends over at the New York City Police Department. She had to hear the message three times to really process what exactly she was being called in for as backup. A large blue bug pony, possibly a mutant, possibly a robot. There were crazy situations Rebecca had dealt with since coming to the city: a sewer dwelling tyrant, a living building, reporters. This one sounded like a prime candidate to top the list.
It was nice getting back into her X outfit. Sure, she used it for training exercises, but that was not the same as bringing it out into the real world. When she was young and shy, the skintight nature of her costume was blush-inducing, but a more adult Rebecca had plenty of time to feel comfortable in her own skin. Over the black and green suit, she equipped her chestplate and metal boots, along with new additions to the costume in metal gauntlets replacing the bangles she once wore. The circular shield Cafas had provided her with was magnetically connected to her left gauntlet until she had use for it. The finishing touch, as always, was her green domino mask adhered to her face with spirit gum, and she was out the door to provide backup for one of the good women in blue.
Imagine her surprise when she arrived to Central Park and found a familiar face. ”Ami?” Ami was the one who was at Rebecca’s side when they dealt with the Sewer King, and she was one of the people who walked in on Rebecca and Agnes after the first time they—

Rebecca quickly made her way over to the kitten, enamored with its beautiful fur coat and voice as it chirped more than meowed. Of course she loved her own cat, but Rebecca had a soft spot for cats in general, especially the young kittens like the one Agnes found herself “burdened” by. She gently moved the bags on the couch just enough to give her a spot to sit and pat her own lap. On cue, the kitten hopped onto Rebecca and curled up on the offered spot so she could scratch the top of its head and appreciate the softness of its fur.
While Rebecca was acclimating herself to her new fuzzy friend, Agnes was slipping her hands into her back pockets and planning ways to get rid of her intruder. ”Aggie. She main hae owners.” Despite having no idea what the kitten’s gender was, she found herself calling it a she. It was an odd instinct since her cat was a boy, but that did not stop her. Hopefully she was not misgendering the poor thing. ”If she doesnae, she shoods.” The poor thing did not want to be a street cat, clearly, so she would do all she could to facilitate a home for the little beast.
Looking to ease the tension of her ex-girlfriend, Rebecca reached into her brown bag and pulled out her share of the haul of Mediterranean food. ”Haur, eat up an' calm doon.” She could already feel the accusatory eyes of Agnes wondering why Rebecca stopped for food when the plan was to come to the apartment right away. ”Ah stopped fur quick food coz Ah hud nae hud lunch when ye called in panic mode.” It was worth reminding Agnes that, despite her protests, Rebecca was there to help.
Grabbing the foil-wrapped treat for herself, she peeled back the foil to take a bite of her gyro. The hot lamb was coated in tzatziki sauce and buried in onion and tomato, and satisfied the craving that had been nagging her since her walk over to the apartment. ”Ah’m in a group online, sae ance Ah finish thes, Ah'll check if anyone's reported thes wee one missin'.”
Glancing around the apartment, she took in the scenery. It was not Rebecca’s first time over at this point, but it was still odd being in the space when she knew she was probably the last person River might want there. Agnes’s fiancée was still on the road, but her presence lingered in the apartment. It was homey, with some music-themed decorations, given the nature of the two women living there. River was still in some of the photos in the apartment, though Becca was sure there were more that were hidden away to make Agnes’s time alone there easier. The décor was a little nicer than what Rebecca had at her place, she was willing to admit, and she would compliment River for that if the woman ever returned to New York.
While Rebecca was lost in her thoughts, a small piece of lamb fell from her gyro and onto her lap. She let out a small, ”Aww,” when the meat landed on the fabric of her jeans, but followed it up with a more enthusiastic, ”Aww!” when the kitten started nibbling on the free meat.
Rebecca had already fed the kitten and was now bonding with it. There was a troubling, distinct chance she might leave Agnes’s apartment with a new cat if she did not find another solution.

The door opened and, as Becca hoped, she was greeted by her oldest and greyest American friend, Gina Schuyler. As she could have expected, she was welcomed immediately with a big, tight hug. Happy to reciprocate, her arms wrapped around Gina’s waist and squeezed her with all the love she had for the girl, even after several years. ”It’s bin tay lang, Gina. it’s guid tae see ye, tay.”
Rebecca looked Gina over as the other woman did the same, and the glossy look in Gina’s watery eyes drew tears to the corners of Becca’s eyes as well.
Gina flattered her and her youthful appearance. Rebecca always hoped she would take after her mother when it came to aging, who could still pass as the younger Scot’s older sister to this day. The last time she saw Gina, the girl was still in her teens, and she had not age as much as she matured. ”An’ look at ye! Yoo’ve gain frae bein' a bonnie lass tae a beautiful woman in mah absence! Mah, hoo time flies,” she mused with a sad smile, wishing she had been there to watch Gina grow through her first years of college.
Rebecca was invited up to Gina’s room, and she nodded enthusiastically. ”Aye, please dae. Leid th’ way.”
As they walked up the stairs, Rebecca thought on how to answer the question of how she had been. ”Guid. Adjustin’ tae bein’ back. Lots changed. But Ah’m teachin’ noo, an’ yoo’ve seen mah other job,” she said, referencing her role as Pixelbecky. ”Ain, weel, I kinda sorta hae a new girlfriend.” As someone who considered Agnes a sister, and always seemed to support their relationship, Rebecca was curious how Gina would feel about the two women moving on from one another.

Walking arm in arm, Rebecca was expecting Maya to ease her in to the news she missed while she was gone. Rebecca was wrong.
"Well, for starters, a couple of months after you left, you and I had a baby."
The comment actually stopped Rebecca in her tracks as her brain ran through every way that sentence could have just happened. Mouth ajar, she muttered to herself, ”But, Ah—wait. You and Ah. Bit. Ah’m th’ ain wi… whit?” No matter how she sliced it, the news of her and Gawain’s secret love child made no sense since she was the one being surprised by it.
Rebecca’s confusion was enough to throw Maya into a laughing fit. They continued their walk and Maya explained the complex saga of the child she thought they had together. Apparently, Rebecca not being around sent a lot of people into a tizzy trying to explain a mysterious gender-shifting infant. The whole scenario was mental, but even worse when she realized she could have solved everything immediately. ”Ah am sae sorry, Maya! Efter everythin' wi' th' Ragman, Ah needed tae lay law. Changed mah number, took online classes, e'en went under a fake nam fur a while.” Being known as “the Ragman victim” was making it impossible for Rebecca to mentally recover from her trauma, so her logical solution was to drop off the face of the Earth for a while. ”Ah ne'er realized Ah was th' missin' piece ay a soap opera,” she mused with a smile. ”Ah mean, dornt worry, when Ah decide tae lit ye know abit uir kid, Ah'll introduce ye myself.” Hoping for a little revenge, Rebecca donned a poker face of her own for as long as she could before she cracked with a smirk and a wink.
Moving on from fake babies, Maya asked about Rebecca’s girlfriend, which gave her pause. How did Maya know about Nessa, she initially thought, before a more reasonable explanation occurred to her: Agnes. ”Oh, Aggie. Sae... we broke up efter college. Ah went tae Oxford fur mah Masters. She joined a travelin' orchestra. Honestly, Ah only recently got back in tooch wi' 'er noo 'at we're baith back.”
She anticipated questions about where the two girls stood now, but instead of explaining that she had a girlfriend, it felt more honest to explain, ”Agnes is engaged noo. So, yeah… things change.”

Rebecca did her best to comply with Agnes’s last request to hurry, but foot traffic on New York sidewalks was a nightmare. Their apartments were surprisingly close, (which would surely be a fact River would hate to hear,) so there was no point in dealing with the hassle that was driving in New York City.
She walked with a sense of urgency until she caught the scent of a Mediterranean food stand. Rebecca’s favorite quality about a big city like New York was the diversity of food options. Pretty much any culture had made it to the metropolis and they all established at least one good restaurant and several food stands. Her priorities shifted slightly, prompting her to wait in line and pick herself up a gyro. Helping Agnes was going to be hungry work, and Rebecca had not grabbed food since breakfast. After she placed her order, she paused, and added a second order for another gyro as an apology for her self-imposed delay.
Rebecca spotted Agnes’s car parked and peeked inside, but was greeted by an empty cabin. There was no cat anywhere she could see, so either the kitten had escaped Agnes, (or at least she hoped it was an escape and not an intentional release,) or it tagged along up to the apartment.
On the way up the stairs, Rebecca’s phone buzzed in her pocket. Not only was she given a status update on the mystery kitten, she even earned a picture. It was probably frustrating for Agnes dealing with this stray making herself at home, but Rebecca was excited to insert herself into the situation, probably making it more annoying.
When she finally made it to Agnes’s floor, the door to the apartment was still cracked open, so Rebecca tucked the small brown bag with their food under one arm and slowly opened the door further with the other. She cautiously peeked inside, assuming Agnes would know, with Rebecca coming over, to be dressed for her company, (which meant a very different thing these days than it once did.) ”Ello?”
Scanning the room, Rebecca saw her ex, as well as her adorable Russian Blue stray. Picking up on the details of the scene, she noticed the grocery bags, including one that one tipped, with the contents spilled across the couch leading to the foot of the kitten.
Smirking, Rebecca walked in and explained, ”Ye brooght up yer messages an' somehaw did nae notice th' stowaway nuzzled next tae yer veggies, an' noo she is claimin' yer cooch as 'er ain. That is whit happened,” she finished smugly, answering the question Agnes had texted her moments earlier.

The moment Rebecca answered the phone, Agnes replied, seemingly in a panic. The tone in her voice quickly prompted the concerned ex-girlfriend to stand up from her desk chair and cross her arms nervously. ”Aggie, ye okay?”
Agnes did let her know there was a “problem” to show Rebecca, but her technology-averse friend struggled for a moment to get a handle of the phone to take a picture in a way that could shed light on the issue. Anxiously, Rebecca wondered what was on fire or what had fallen down a gutter…
And the camera revealed a cat. A Russian Blue, from the looks of it. A kitten really, sitting patiently in the seat of Agnes’s car, and she was being charged with figuring out how to “remove this.”
Rebecca rolled her eyes and groaned, feeling the panic and anxiety expel from her body when she realized there was no real emergency at hand. Agnes likely called Rebecca for her feline expertise, but she called the wrong friend if she wanted to abandon the poor kitten and go on with her day.
”Ugh, really, Agnes?” Rebecca sighed and gathered her thoughts on the best way to handle the issue. ”First hin' is first; yoo're nae leavin' 'at kitten out thaur oan its ain. It is a wee hin' an' we ur makin' sure it stays safe.” The kitten might be a stray, or just a lost pet looking for its owner and seeking shelter in the relative safety of Agnes’s car.
There were steps they could take; Domino escaped the apartment once and Rebecca did as much research as she could about where to reach out and how to communicate within her community. ”Listen... gie in yer car. Gang back tae yer place. Ah'll meit ye thaur an' we can figure thes it,” she instructed, already grabbing her coat and keys so she could head out the door.

Girlfriend!
Rebecca had a girlfriend! For the first time in over two god***n years, she had an honest-to-goodness romantic partner. It just happened one night. The words slipped through her lips in a whisper: “I like you, Nessa.” It was the first time Rebecca brought actual feelings into what they were doing, and that tiny crack opened everything else up, leaving them talking late into the night. Nessa looked her right in the eyes and asked if Rebecca was really ready for what she was proposing. She even mentioned Agnes, which was uncomfortable, but fair. Nessa did not just forget why she was called over to the apartment that first night.
She was ready, and when she promised that to Nessa, the other girl wrapped her in her arms for a long, tender kiss. Eventually, Rebecca would admit that Agnes helped her get to the point where she could move forward. The exes shared a friendly night where Rebecca was there for Agnes as a friend, and in return, she received the support of her friend to move forward with her life. Rebecca did not “owe” Agnes anything, nor did she need permission, but she needed closure, and maybe sharing that night as friends was enough for her to look kindly on the past and step toward a different future.
Life was actually coming together. She often viewed her life divided between the realms of social, romantic, and career, and for the first time since her return to the States, she was firing on all cylinders. Socially, she was reconnecting with so many old friends and making new ones: Gina, Maya, Serena, and Juliette were all regular parts of her life, and most importantly, Agnes was really back. They texted, they would make occasional plans, and somehow things felt less awkward each time they saw one another.
Romantically, making the healthy decision to commit to Nessa and allow herself to be happy again was huge. They were no longer ending every night in her bed, but they were still seeing each other consistently, and somehow the Scot was not driving the New York native insane. They were still early in their actual relationship, having been an “item” for only a few weeks, but it felt uncomplicated. The girls could talk or sit in silence and be content. Nessa even confessed her one big secret to her new girlfriend, and Rebecca was pleased to feel like someone’s confidante.
She was even taking positive steps in her career. Classes were going well, new videos were getting a lot of love, and she was finally writing again. It was not perfect, but she was finally falling into a groove.
The last text Nessa had sent Rebecca on this particular afternoon was confirmation that her team’s editor was willing to handle some of her new videos, incorporating visual concepts she wanted to test out. One benefit of dating within the ViewTube community was that the squad from Nessa’s channel were taking a shine to her and helping her out, like she had an editor-in-law.
It was good news to balance out the obvious truth: if Nessa was helping with editing, there was a chance the lovers would not be seeing each other that night. Rebecca held on to hope, but in the meantime, she was confident enough with where they stood that she could take the afternoon to herself to jot down lines and ideas into her notebook.
The apartment was filled with mellow instrumental pieces so Rebecca could focus on the words in her head. She was back in her own little world until a new instrument broke the spell her pen had over her.
A tune played on a violin piped up from her phone, signaling a call from Agnes. She smiled; the butterflies she would have once felt were quiet, but she was happy to hear that melody nonetheless. Picking up the device, she replied, ”Guid day thaur, Aggie. What's up?”

It was comforting to see she was not the only one enthusiastic about reuniting, as Rebecca could feel herself connected to the ground only by the tip of her shoes. Maya was not as tall as Gawain, but she still had a good four inches on Rebecca, and she was one old friend who Rebecca had no qualms being literally swept off her feet by.
Maya’s time away from the Mansion was complicated and… incomplete. Rebecca’s curiosity was swelling, but she kept it to herself. She did not know if those “missing parts” were her choice or if they were taken by force, and this was a happy reunion. No need to press possibly sensitive issues right away, since they were both back.
They were both back. It felt good to realize that.
According to Maya, there was indeed plenty the Scot missed out on between her departure and Maya’s, and she was excited for someone to possibly fill some holes in the Mansion timeline.
”Please fill me in. Ah was walkin' doon memory lane anyway.” Rebecca slipped her arm around Maya’s, interlocking at the elbow. ”Walk wi' me. Let's catch up, luv.”

The large insect Agnes had been petting retreated back to its space in its mother’s arm, and beyond the initial cringe of seeing the slit open up in Agnes’s skin to allow him entry, Rebecca took the moment in stride. Living with Agnes had gotten her used to the presence of Tiny and Bitey, and while Rebecca was not about to get affectionate with the bugs as their owner did, she could calmly be around them without losing her lunch. When Agnes allowed the centipede out of her arm, the keeper of the apartment grabbed Domino and squared him away in her bedroom. Things were going well with Agnes, but Domino either eating or getting bitten by Bitey would add unnecessary awkwardness.
There was already so much readily available awkwardness that came with talking to her ex-girlfriend about her current romantic interest. They both knew this was uncharted territory. When they first broke up, Rebecca’s… single experimentations happened while Agnes was not a part of her life. When they reunited, it took time for Agnes to come to terms with what happened, but Gawain and Lexi (and to a lesser extent, Vicente,) were all part of her past at that point. Now Rebecca came home to find her first love engaged to another woman, and was finally learning how to process that, (though hopefully not too late.) It was difficult, but now the shoe was on the other foot. Agnes was watching Rebecca begin to develop attachments to someone who was not the violinist herself. Maybe Agnes was completely over their old romance, but Rebecca would venture to guess that did not make experiencing this new love life as an outsider any easier.
Agnes admitted as much, so they could at least both be open about the inherent weirdness of where they now stood. Learning as they were, Rebecca still found herself impressed by Agnes’s maturity. She was right; they were learning to confide in one another and be happy to see the other happy. They were going to take baby steps together, and that was alright—some topics would grow easier with time, and others might just not be appropriate for them to share anymore. They would learn that line eventually. ”Yoo're pure reit, Ah'll keep onie saucy details tae myself,” she joked with a smirk, (actually keeping the saucy details to herself.)
Even Agnes’s words of approval were small, but substantial. She knew nothing about Nessa, but she wanted to support Rebecca, and knowing that took a weight off her chest. ”She is nice,” Rebecca agreed. Maybe one day, Nessa and Agnes could meet, but that was an idea she had no intention of rushing. ”An' yoo're nice, tay, Aggie. Ah've missed yer friendship.”
Rebecca held her glass of pop up to cling against Agnes’s in celebration of the slow rebuilding of their healthy friendship. Realizing how serious the conversation now felt, she took a deep breath and shook her head, grabbing the remote. ”Ah’m sorry, enaw sappiness. Want tae watch as Ah shout mah heed aff gonnae doon one ay those giant vertical water slides?” The video had a camera facing her the whole trip down, another Go Pro camera recording her point of view, and one of her University friends filming her drop from the ground. Fun, uncomplicated, and just what their night needed to help keep Agnes’s mind away from weighty relationship topics.
