The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

ooc: Aedus, Im going to assume this thread takes place before the one I sent you. So if you wanted to wait to respond to that one til we get more from this we can, or we can assume you already know Lumen from this situation.
IC: Most people were surprised to learn Lumen was a practising Catholic in today's world of I have a scientific answer for that. But, she was Irish, and the Catholic roots ran deep in her family. She didn't agree with everything the church said and did, and she certainly did think for herself, but the faith aspect of the religion certainly called to her. Back home she'd often indulge in Adoration, the Catholic form of meditation. Amazing things could happen to a person in Adoration and Lumen had been witness to such things. It only furthered her belief in a higher power. Maybe not the one the church explained, but she wasn't about to completely cut off the religion because she didn't agree with everything. There was merit. She was annoyed however that so many people upon hearing that she had a religious affiliation determined she must therefor be closed minded. She felt the people who chose to ignore religion to be closed minded. It took a VERY open mind indeed to approach any religion in this modern world.
It was at Sunday mass- the first one she'd attended in New York that the Jesuit monk had told her about the lecture and given her a pamphlet. She'd absent-mindedly tucked it away until last night when it fell out of her bag. She read all sides of it and felt this lecture should prove interesting after all. Always good to know who the fanatics were where you lived. And this Dr. Black certainly sounded like one. The Jesuit insisted that in order to have a strong faith we couldn't simply ignore people like Dr. Black. We must engage them in the spiritual battlefield and learn their tactics and all they have to say to better protect ourselves. Lumen didn't know how she felt about all that, but it did look to make an interesting lecture.
She was ushered into the lecture hall quickly upon arrival and then to the sanctuary. She took one of the seats toward the back. She'd always been a dutiful student in her own studies but sitting in the front always made her nervous. She couldn't see what was going on behind her. Dr. Black entered and my, was there a lot of him to see.
>>>"The essential condition of self-awareness, perhaps even life itself, is emptiness. Pure, perfect emptiness. From this proceeds humankind's search for such elusive concepts as 'meaning' and 'purpose.' This has amused me for quite some time because, like any philosopher, I think I have all the answers. Those of us who don't admit that, by the way, are the ones you should be worried about. So, here I am to share some of those answers. I'm going to tell you the meaning of life. You see, ladies and gentlemen... there isn't one."
Lumen just stared blankly ahead. That wasn't much of an introduction, was it meant to grip her? Enrage her? It had been exactly what she'd prepared herself to hear, maybe even less. She felt disappointed. She pulled out her phone and checked for new messages. Hmmm no signal. That was weird.
>>>"Well, not originally, anyway. In the absence of meaning, we make it up. Some of us are exceptionally talented at this, and their answers to answerless questions tend to be adopted by other people who are tired of asking. This, of course, leads to large numbers of very confused people using other peoples answers to answer their own questions, neither of which they really understand."
Hmm well that was an interesting way of putting it. But Lumen felt the very reason she was here because she wasn't tired of asking. She didn't think she'd ever be. After all, that was the very foundation of her search for her lost brother. Her other half. She never allowed herself the courtesy of using someone else's answer. Lumen always tried to discover her own or would blatantly tell you she didn't have one yet.
>>>"Do not despair, though! Indeed, there is no intrinsic meaning to your ultimately insignificant existence, but this is not damning, this is liberating. The problem, you see, is that you allow the rest of humanity to define your lives. Your life, your morality, is just that. It is yours. If, that is you are willing to make it so."
She was starting to rule this Dr. Black as just another ego inflated wind bag. Nothing he was saying was particularly insightful, merely avoiding. No new argument here. She was hoping to feel challenged at this lecture. Where was the spiritual warfare the monk had promised her? She looked around to see some just as disengaged as she was, and others clearly offended. She shook her head. If they were so easily offended why were they even here? Like moths to a flame...
>>>"To that end, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is my pleasure to inform you that you are all being held hostage."
Lumen stared at the little man confused. Was that meant to be some sort of parallel? Were they being held hostage to their own belief system? Well... that actually could make for an interesting argument. Perhaps she was going to get something from this lecture after all...
>>>"I'm afraid I have taken the liberty of rendering the relevant security personnel unconscious for the time being, and have taken custody of the lecture hall keys, since their keepers are now presently indisposed.
And then she saw the tentacle, the gears started turning, and everything clicked. Dr. Black was more than your usual fanatic. He was a mutant fanatic. and by the look of those tentacles, a dangerous one. Running for the door made no sense, he eluded as much as she bet he was right. She didn't want to draw attention to herself... yet. but as she sat in her spot she worked on becoming aware of her surroundings. What could she use to fight with if she needed to? There was no running in this situation. Too many innocents and nowhere to run.
>>>"So, I believe you will appreciate that the answer to my own question may be a matter of life and death."
Like hell. Lumen wasn't here to play a game of Saw with this wack job. She concentrated on her energy, the energy she'd been reactively spreading throughout her body to keep the glow at bay and keep her eyes from hurting. She'd need that energy in her head now. In case she needed to tap into her power.
Then a young man in front stood up. <<<"I'm assuming that you are not in fact looking for Nazi's."

There and Back Again Jack Be Nimble Lumen, hell bent on finding her brother, seeks out the help of a mutant with time travelling capabilities.
Lumen's breath was coming out in little puffs of mist as she hurriedly made her way between the shadows of the container pier. Her suspect was getting ready to make an exchange and she needed that photo if the police were ever going to catch this guy and keep him. He'd been avoiding people like the plague because he could smell a stakeout happening. Lumen had been brought in because of the M connection. In short the Boys in Blue wanted to know if he was a supplier to the Unicorn Man.
The elusive Unicorn Man. Lumen didn't call him by his name as the other's on the case did. Sebastian made him sound too human. She'd prefer to just keep thinking of him as the Unicorn Man until she knew he wasn't some paedophile or kidnapper. The suspect she was following very well may lead her to him. She had a feeling that if she could find the Unicorn Man this whole mystery might unravel.
Click she snapped a few shots of her suspect heading into one of the warehouses. He was a big burly fellow - didn't show any signs of mutation- but that didn't mean he didnt have one. He certainly had a big package under his arm. It might as well have had a giant M on it for all the good it did him.
She waited a few moments then followed into the warehouse. Come on big guy... she said to herself. "Give me the money shot...." She hid herself behind a stack of cardboard boxes and peered out beside them just as the buy guy was meeting up with a little bald guy. She readied her camera. As he passed the package, and she took the photo, a look of complete horror went over Lumen's face. The camera had flashed. Somehow, she'd bumped the auto function on. The two men looked up, the two men took out gun. "Shit!"
She still had the dark so she moved as far away from that stack of boxes as she could. Just in time. They opened fire. "Shit shit shit!" Lumen ran for the door.
Dexter had been setting up the kill room. A kill room could be any room but Dexter would make sure it was secure, that screams wouldn't be heard, and it usually had meaning to his victims. He covered it meticulously in plastic so everything could easily be disposed of without a trace. Then he'd strap his unconscious victims to the table and simply wait for them to wake up. He liked to talk to his victims, even though he knew they'd just die anyway. They never did say anything to change his mind after all. To change his dark passenger.
Lumen was just getting to the part of the story where Dexter was slicing the cheek of a victim for his blood slide collection when a familiar voice actually made her jump a bit in her chair. It wasn't a normal thing for Lumen to be caught off guard, she was not someone easily caught by surprise so the extra little burst of adrenaline surprised her as much as the actual surprise. She glanced up from the text "Paul?" it was almost a question. Her mouth had said his name before his image had even caught up with her brain. The two parts met half a second later. "Paul!" she exclaimed, in a hushed whisper of realization. "Hi!" She stood up a little awkwardly deciding that the motion actually brought her just a little too close to Paul's body in a way that was a little impolite (or a little daring depending on what side of the fence you're on) for people who were only a step away from strangers. So in the same awkward motion that brought her standing she sat back down totally feeling a little mortified. Lumen wasn't usually awkward either. Lumen was supposed to be graceful.
"Uh yeah, Dexter....What are you doing here?" What. A. Stupid. Question. What else would he be doing here in the library if not the same thing as her? She already knew he wasnt employed here, he'd explained as much during breakfast. When had that been anyway? She thought for a moment and remembered it was back at the beginning of the week. It was Friday now, and it was snowing out quite a bit. Paul hadn't called.
Of course, she wasn't sure what was customary for American men when it came to calling ladies who gave you their number but back home a gal was lucky to make it a whole day before the interested male party made a phone call. So perhaps Paul wasn't interested. The thought made the awkward moment of standing closeness all the more awkward in Lumen's mind.
Lumen stood motionless and unblinking as the creature looked at her, he was taking her in and she was doing the same. A mutant she thought with shock. That creature was a mutant. For half an instant her heart went out to him. If she looked like that and couldn't change into anything else, she was liable to start smashing some cars up too. Especially on Christmas.
But that was about as far as it went, because half a second later the guy standing only 5 or 6 feet behind her snapped his camera and like most idiot tourists didn't think to turn off the blinding flash. The creature seemed to blink or something, and then Lumen learned just how bad it would have been if she had taken a photo.
The car door came hurdling toward the guy who was standing behind her. Everything seemed to go in slow motion for Lumen. She centered herself and instantly became aware of a man to her right (ooc: that's you Brody!) and another man rushing up from the left (ooc: Joe!). Maybe the man rushing in meant to knock her back but there was another darker haired woman closer that he got. So in the split second that followed, Lumen found herself pushing a gloved hand into the spot just between the shoulder blades of the man on her right with the dirty blond hair. "Down. Now!" and she shoved him down to the side walk along with herself.
She was low to the ground and waited to hear what was sure to be a sickening crunch when the door hit the stupid man with the camera but something else made a strange crunch instead and she was sprayed with a fine powder almost like snow. Her eyes darted up just in time to see the man who'd been coming in from the left, the guy who got the other girl out of the way. He'd thrown something at the car. No, maybe thrown wasn't the right word. She kept an arm around the blond guy (hey. blonds had to stick together) still huddled close to the ground but realized that the man who'd stopped the car door was also a mutant and he was using some sort of power force.
"Get out of here, NOW!" Lumen commanded the other people behind her while she fell back on her haunches pulling the blond guy with her. She exchanged a glance with him. "You alright? Sorry for the shove. Flying car doors and all."
Lumen was in love with this library. It was easily at the very least 5Xs bigger than any library she had back home. It had multiple levels. It smelled of old parchment and ink even though there was a brand new computer lab and e-book readers.
She'd spent a whole hour simply exploring and taking it all in. It wasn't until her second hour there that she started picking up the true crime books and a Dexter book on the way to a big comfy chair. She'd watched the Dexter series on TV and was surprised to learn it was a book and one she'd not yet read. She loved the idea of Dexter. She loved the idea of his Dark Passenger perhaps because she felt like she had one of her own.
No, she wasn't a morbid serial killer with an obsession with blood slides. But she had a code she stuck to. She had an obsession with finding her brother. There were times when she woke up at night just like Dexter and her passenger would let her do nothing but think of him and research where he might be. It was like a constant ache in her very center. A dark circle that churned. A dark passenger, like Dexter. So yeah she liked the show and she figured she'd like the books better. The idea of criminals who escaped the system but still were caught on Dexter's table appealed to her too.
She made quite the image sitting in the oversized chair with the stack of books nearly over her head on the side table. Lumen was always quick with reading and even quicker with anything online. She credited part of her sleuthing and survival instincts to these books. You simply couldn't read them for 11 years and not learn something. So it was there she sat with the blood spattered cover of Dexter up to her nose while some women passed her by making "tut"ing noises.
Lumen had to grin a bit when Paul didn't finish his food. She found herself wondering if he was a mutant. He didn't look like a mutant... but neither did she. He didn't appear to be a telepath... didn't give any indication he was reading her thoughts. As far as she could tell he couldn't levitate or fly- why would he bother running then? But that didn't mean his body didn't change or he didnt have control over certain elements or something. The woman in red who took her brother didn't look like anything special but she could control fire.
It really wasnt any of Lumen's business whether he was a mutant or not. But she always felt comfortable knowing... just not comfortable asking. Maybe if they met again she might push it a little. He'd been respectful and hadn't asked her... or was that just dumb? She didn't see near as many mutants in Ireland or perhaps they were just better at hiding than these New Yorkers. Nearly everyone she'd met so far had been a mutant.
"You can give me a call whenever you'd like. I'm busy until about mid week for this week. Job and such. But I'm free after that. Don't be a stranger.". She answered putting her dishes into a neat little stack for the waiter who upon seeing it wondered if she'd worked in the service industry before. After all, it was usually only past servers who knew how to stack a pile of plates so perfectly. "But I do have some meetings to get to this evening so if I don't get home now I'll be showing up in jogging clothes and all smelly." she reached across the table and patted his hand. It was an intimate gesture but it was also very Irish. "Thank you, Paul. I don't know what I expected coming to this state but I certainly didn't expect so many New Yorkers to be this kind. It helps a gal feel a little less lonely and I'm always happy to make new acquaintances."
She fished out some crumpled bills and a couple coins and placed them on the table. She had a feeling Paul was the type of guy to pay for a lady's meal but she wouldn't let him. At least not this time. She gave him a little nod, gathered her things, and swaggered outta there the best she could with those sore legs.
Lumen was just heading home after a good night of sleuthing. She'd been following one of the teen boys on the MIA kids list. She didn't think he had anything to do with the Unicorn Man because the trail he left was too obvious. She has suspicions he was just your usual run-away because of the obvious trail he left but being able to cross one name off her list would help her narrow things down. After a few hours of following it became aware that he was an average teen involved in an average New York City street gang. She felt for the kid, but the attitude she'd witnessed in him made her want to shove a nice heeled shoe up his butt. None the less she got as many photos as she could to take back to his rich parents. She wasn't able to bring the kid home- he didn't want to be there, but she had proof he was alive and relatively well.
She had stopped on the sidewalk to donate a few coins to the Salvation Army bell ringers, and found herself picking up the camera and scrolling through the images. It was cold that night, and it had been getting closer to Christmas Eve. People were still out even this late in the evening at the late-open stores getting presents. She was thinking to herself how annoying that was when some giant thing apparently fell from the sky on to the roof of a car just next to her. It made a sickening crunch and the creature let out an angry cry.
It looked like some sort of mini Godzillia in winter clothing. She stood motionless and unblinking. Centring herself, preparing to run at a moments notice. But hey, the local paper might pay her an extra hundred bucks to snap a pic of that thing. She wasn't ready to risk her life for it, but she was ready to wait 5 seconds and see how things panned out.
Sounds like something Lumen might attend out of curiosity. Let us know when you start the thread, I'll read a bit and see if it makes sense for her to join and if it does I'll pop in!
Lumen gave a big grin. "I dont usually tell people much about my mutation," she admitted. "But it is kinda nice to know there's someone else out there who's dealing with the same thing. I'm glad to have met you Tasean. I think we'll cross paths again, I can only hope it's not for anything sad." she wasn't trying to be a downer, just realistic. If she was finding missing kids sooner or later they'd end up with Tasean trying to get them back into the system. Getting jobs, rehab, maybe foster homes. Who knew?
She passed him one of her business cards it just has her name, phone number, and email on it. "Here. Give me a call if you think you ever need my help." she stood up and started to stretch. "Ive got a whole big day ahead of me, but it's really nice to meet you"
Lumen took a bite of bacon and then went to work smearing peanut butter on her toast while listening to Paul reminisce a bit about his own youth. "I think all kids need a bit of a wild stage to grow properly, I think I was just a bit weird with mine." She laughed "I was really obsessed with true crime stories. Might have been a reason for the lack of dates in high school. Can't imagine the boys lining up to ask the girl with her nose constantly in the book about The Black Widow to prom." She grinned. Lumen hadn't actually been that interested in dating as a teen. Her obsession with her brother was much worse in the early days and she couldn't focus much on anything the kids her age paid attention to. It all seemed like a waste of time.
"I'll agree with you that it's getting worse for kids though. The numbers keep going up, and numbers don't lie." specifically the numbers for mutant kids in New York.
She listened attentively to his story about the fire ants. Probably with a little too much attention. She might have been currently visualizing a scantly clad Paul and a garden hose. Her eyes were starting to hurt. "I can imagine that was certainly a site to see." she'd finished the eggs and bacon and was now moving on to the fruit cup. "This has really been a lovely visit" she reflected. "I've been meeting a few people here and there, trying to make connections. But I think you're the first one to detail the best way to both put on a show and get rid of fire ants. " she reached in her belt and fished out one of her business cards. Her cards only had her name, email address, and phone number. She never put her job or anything else on it. Not only because she valued her privacy but because many of her clients valued their privacy too. It wasn't exactly a good sign when your wife found the card of a private investigator in your jacket.
"Here." she passed him the card, not wanting to finish their visit so soon but still hoping to leave an impression. "Maybe we can get together to run sometime, and maybe you can show me some more of the city. I have lots of questions and new places I need to see. It be nice to... do that together. ". She'd said as much to the other people she'd met too. And it was all true. She wanted to see Tasean again, and the others. Everyone she took the time to give a card to she felt would be an asset. But her eyes were hurting as well as her head. As nice a time as she was having she really needed to go burn some light energy and maybe have a nice long bath.
>> "Do you need some Advil or something? I'm sure the waitress can find something if you need it."
"I think I'll be fine. Just caught me a bit off guard" her blush deepened for a half a heart beat before her brain kicked in and went into zen mode. Lumen was at her best when she'd taken a few moments to gather herself. Not just in thinking but in the oops I'm a walking night light end of it too.
Paul decided to order the same thing as her. She was embarrassingly thankful. Between her lights and her job Lumen burned a lot of calories in a day. She needed to eat lots to keep up her stamina and the pace she always kept. She had some sleuthing to do tonight and tomorrow she'd be checking out a mixed martial arts class in the afternoon.
>>>"Good at finding things? What sorts of things?"
"People." she stated. "The missing kind. Even better at finding the ones who don't want to be found." she took another sip of water feeling rather warm. Paul seemed like a nice guy but she just couldn't go around telling every single person who was listening that she was a private eye. If she did there'd be nothing private about it. She felt neutral about telling Tasean, but she did honestly believe it was and would remain a benefit to them both. With his work it was almost certain they'd meet again under more stressful circumstances. It was good to have a person on the inside of the system if she found any of these lost kids.
"I'm looking for some missing kids, actually." She said in a bit of a grim tone. She wasnt sure why she was opening up to Paul at all. Her brain was cursing her out for giving him this information. At the same time though she knew finding suspects and finding people was more than a game of cat and mouse. It was more like fishing. If she put out the right type of nets or the right lure something might take. She'd only told him missing kids anyway, not missing mutant kids.
>>>"I've got a decent amount of money saved since I've lived frugally for some time but I do the occasional landscaping job to make extra money. Working with flowers and plants is a nice relaxing job and a good way to escape from the hectic world around."
Lumen nodded knowing everything there was to know about living frugally. She had no problem investing in something- like her running shoes or her utility belt. But she was still living in the hotel because it was several hundred dollars cheaper for the time being than all the apartments she'd viewed. She was hell bent on finding one to accommodate her needs. One where she could slip in and out at all hours of the night without any nosey neighbours or landlords.
She was a little disappointed to hear that he worked in landscaping. Not that she didn't have respect for those who worked in the field just that she'd been hoping a bit that his job might pull them together again sometime. Er wait. She was disappointed because she couldn't use his skills? Yes, ah, that made more sense. Interest in the opposite sex and interest in their ability to help her solve a case usually played a massive game of chess in her head from day to day.
Lumen had tried to date a bit when she was younger but men always were too suspicious of her work or worst yet they'd be worried about her safety like she couldn't take care of herself and maybe they could do it better for her. Plus, with her unusual obsession with her brother (as one ex had put it) most men seemed to not live up to her expectations of what a partner should be. After all, they were competing with Riori, her twin, her other half. Even as a child he'd been quick and cunning.
But, sometimes Lumen did get lonely. She'd been on her own for such a long time. Two parents who graciously accepted the money she sent home but paid her no more mind than a Christmas card in the mail and perhaps all of two friends back home. She'd even went on a few dates with other women- not because she felt them any more attractive than men but only because she hoped they might deal with her circumstances better. It was never the case. Leading Lumen to believe that she was possibly a bit broken in that department.
"Landscaping must be fairly taxing work. But the results are undeniable. I'd rather see New York with more green spaces even." yes, the results of skilled landscapers were easy to spot. Not only in the gardens around the city but in the physical shape of the men doing the task. It almost seemed funny to her that men who essentially planted flowers were always ripped. But there was a great deal of manual labour involved in planting and sustaining gardens.
She made a bit of idle chat about gardening telling Paul about the wild rose bushes that grew back home and how she'd thought their bulbs were actually tomatoes and tried to eat one as a kid. Flower bulbs didn't taste very good. But their breakfast would- it was being served to them just as she finished.
ooc: forgive me while I assault your eyes with rainbow colours, hehe. Still trying out which works best! So happy to be rp-ing again! <3
