The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"I'm still mad at you." she said though it came out funny muffled by his shirt. "But I'm really glad you're here." she pulled away to look up at him sure she looked terribly with the tears and probably some snot...
It was so strange- the conflicting feelings she was having. She loved Luke, she was glad he was back... but it also seemed awkward and strange. For now she was running on adrenaline but she knew it would wear off soon. "I stayed on at the mansion for almost a year." she explained. "I waited as long as I could but people were... talking... I just needed to go home to escape it." she led him to a wooden bench on the deck nestled beneath a low hanging palm tree. "Naveed was ready to track you down no matter where you were on earth. Im pretty sure he was training the dogs on your scent!" she laughed. "But Sedna just held my hand while I cried, listened, and told me our paths were still entangled." she sniffled a little then turned her face back to him and smiled. "Sedna's kinda funny that way."
For the next hour she told him all about the things she handled at the mansion while he was gone. She told him about the aquarium and how she'd finally left the job after it really seemed like the people coming there were OKAY with mutants. She talked about the flight back home to the North and the adjustment it had been. Finally she explained about her work here on the island. "It's just nice to be helping for the sake of helping. This isn't a mutant rights thing- it's an everyone's rights thing. These kids are poor... sick... the school is still being built and my boss has been raising money for TB treatment!" she laid her head against his shoulder. "I just feel like I can make a big difference here... with or without my tail. You'll stay, will you? I know they could use your help too!"
Lumen looked at Paul with heavy eyes. "If I find out who abducted him- maybe follow them... maybe I can change the outcome? she explained
"eggggghhhh" said Jack making a sound like a game show buzzer "If I send you back nothing you do will affect this reality. It'll go off onto it's own time stream... probably... sure... I don't really know... but you can't just find your brother and come back with everything honky dorry He sipped on more of Lumen's wine and he cheeks blushed a bit.
"Well then..." began Lumen feeling her own cheeks blush- more out of anger. "I can at least follow and find out where he went and what was done. I can be a detective and learn everything I can. When I come back maybe I can track him down or do something..." she reached under the table and squeezed Paul's hand.
She knew she was going to do this with or without him. If he came along for the ride she'd likely feel safer. Be less inclined to get too emotionally involved and swoop in to save Riori. "How do we get back?" she asked.
"I've developed a few methods, I'll either come back and get you but I think it'll also wear off within a few days. You could be gone for years in that time line and have only hours or days here. Time jumping is a fickle thing. I'm still learning." replied Jack as the food was placed in front of them - along with more wine.
Lumen glared at the waiter- maybe he thought 3 people were drinking this much wine but she didnt want to have to continue paying for refills! "Still learning..." she mumbled. This guy really was just a kid- no matter how grown up he looked.
~~~
The evening spread on as Jack recounted some of his previous travels to Lumen and Paul. They ate their food mostly in silence while the young boy became drunker and bolder from the wine. She regretted inviting him to a place like this... but had to admit the excitement was bubbling in her stomach.
This was the first strong lead she had for Riori since coming to New York. She could actually know the names of the mutants who took him- find out their past locations, and maybe find out if they were affiliated with a group. She was a little afraid of what she might see too but as the night went on she was feeling braver and braver. She asked more direct questions making notes in her notebook.
Lumen hadn't picked up her blackberry all night either- a sure sign she was engrossed in what was happening. The little red light was flashing but she ignored it. She was trying to decide when would be a good time for this trip. "What's your schedule like in the next few weeks? I have a few cases I should wrap up first... and I guess I should pack a bag... but I'd like to-"
She was cut off when Jack jumped from his seat and stumbled on the floor next to their table. His lips and teeth were stained red from the wine and he gave Paul and Lumen a bloody grin. "We might as well go now," he said trying to hold his balance on the floor. "No time like the present!"
Lumen's eyes went wide with confusion while Jack pulled a candle stick out of apparently thin air... "Wait... what?" she let go of Paul's hand and went to stand up just as Jack lit and jumped over said candle stick.
It felt as if she'd suddenly been pulled by a huge smack of gravity face first into the table. She tried to pull her arms up around and right herself but the force was strong like an amusement park ride. Lumen was aware of a spinning- a sense of motion- but she was pinned firmly to whatever it was she was against.
Her stomach had butterflies and her ears were ringing. Her eyes stung and her skin felt like it was on fire. Lumen's skin was glowing full throttle and whatever was beneath her suddenly gave way. She was falling. She had no idea that practically everyone in the restaurant was having a very similar experience.
Sorry for taking so long, so much going on. Feel free to respond what just happened and when you do start your own thread- link it here so we can all follow where you go
Hi all, as Phoenix said I was super sick! Our transit system is also on strike making everything I do take way longer thanks to travel times. Been really busy teaching, getting caught up from being ill, and my brand new mermaid tail arrived and I've been working a lot of weekends as the mermaid!
I'm also helping put on the school musical so I've been getting home later and later... just so exhausted! I'm going to try really hard to finish up the threads I'm in today so people can move on without me. Then I'll probably just have 1 or 2 going with people who dont mind me being awol In two weeks I'm going to Tampa Bay Florida and I'll be performing as the mermaid and doing all sorts of fun things! So I wont be around much then either! Ahhh sorry.
He took off his glasses and gave his speech. It was a good speech. Raina hung on every word even though everything seemed to be happening in a dream-like state. She almost felt like she was having an out of body experience- watching herself standing there with Luke. She wanted to tell him off. She wanted to tell him to go back to where he came from but.... It was the glasses that did it.
When he took off his glasses and looked at her with those almost colourless eyes... the meaning of his words sunk in. She could see herself in those eyes. Only her. Nothing else. Even though there was so much around them, her reflection was the only thing filling those eyes. Everything clicked. Everything sunk in. She felt light headed.
Raina stepped closer so her reflection filled his eyes completely. Her heart was pounding in her ears. She couldn't help it when the tears started falling. It wasnt just sadness... it was relief... and a little happiness too. She couldn't sleep for weeks when she realized Luke wasn't coming back. All that pain, sadness, and overwhelming emotion came rushing back.
"Luke..." she whimpered before pushing her feet forward. She embraced him, but in a desperate fall into him kind of way. She locked her arms around his mid section and buried her face in his chest. She couldn't help the crying now and she knew she looked ridiculous. Raina was actually sobbing and finding it hard to get her words out. In embracing him part of her body just let go and her guard came down.
"P-please d-dont leave me ag-gain..." She wasn't sure she forgave him, and she didn't know what this meant. But Luke was her other half. Her heart and her body knew the second he stepped down on that patio. All it wanted was to be one again.
Raina stood there, staring, as he held out a dolphin. He would bring her a dolphin. That was so... Luke. A great big part of her really missed that. She reached out and took the dolphin, turning it over in her hands with a half grin- still a little shocked. The dolphin had its own permanent grin and it's little button eye stared up at her.
Luke explained something about Naveed and Sedna. She looked up from the dolphin. "You went... up North?" the last time they'd been up North together she feared the lifestyle was too hard on Luke. That plus their winter time ocean encounter had her thinking (back before he left) that in the future visits home might be done solo. But here he was, having returned from doing just that. He even thought she looked good.
She wanted to ask him more. She wanted to kiss him, scream at him, hell maybe even punch him... but she suddenly felt weary. "You look good too." she said still trying to find the connection from her brain to her mouth. She took a hesitant step toward him. "This is where I'm living... this year." she explained. "That is to say, I uh, am working here now too." she moved her arm in a motion as if she was working on the entire island itself. "uh, well, at a school down the trail." this time she motioned a little more specifically and in the right direction.
She stood there trying to think of what to say or do next, but only one thought came to mind. Her mouth was already saying it before her brain had a chance to intervene. "Luke... why are you here?" it came out as a whimper.
The pare hung in the air as if someone had turned off gravity. At least-- that's what it felt like. Raina's entire body froze with that simple word. Part of her wanted to believe she had imagined it. In the slow-downed time it took for the pare to hit the deck Raina felt a wave of emotion. Disbelief at first. Maybe even a little trying to convince herself she hadn't heard what she'd heard. Next came confusion. He couldn't be here... he didn't know where she was... unless... Acceptance soon followed. No. He was here. It made sense. She was finally settled and moving on of course he was... Anger... Resentment.... but at the very core of it... the longing.
The familiar sweep of sonar washed over her. So gentle she was shocked she even noticed it. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up, and so did she. Raina still held her back to him. She couldn't see him yet but part of her knew exactly where he'd be standing, exactly what she'd see when she turned around. She instantly became aware of his smell, and if it wasn't so damn warm here to begin with... she'd convince herself she was aware of his body heat.
She turned around. Her hair was longer now, beaded and braided in a long plait that fell down the front of her right shoulder. A day in the sun had spattered her face with freckles. She was skinnier- she didn't eat much these days. She'd developed an upset stomach after it became apparent Luke wasn't coming back. Her eyes twinkled like they always did, but were older and wiser.
She hadn't breathed yet, so when she finally came in- damn it all- it sounded like a gasp. Even a surprised gasp. So she stood there. Breathing. Staring at Luke while he stared back. Her body not quite caught up with her brain.
This was the part in romantic movies when she was supposed to run and embrace him, tears falling down her face while he kissed her hair and told her how stupid he'd been. She might even like it if it played out that way-- but her damn legs wouldnt move. Not one inch. So instead, she gave a half- almost knowing Sedna styled smile. "Hi"
With the school day ended still early in the afternoon, Raina had the rest of the day to herself. She started by heading to the beach side market to pick up a few things for the hostel. Everything was fresh, the fruit ripe, the seafood right out of the ocean, and the people smiling. Despite a lot of poverty and illness on this island- the people still managed a wonderful disposition.
She left with a basket piled high with fruits, nuts, and home made bread. she'd even purchased a few locally made clothing. When she got back it didnt take long to put everything away. While she was there she'd also purchased some glass beads, so when she was finished putting things away she went up to her bathroom and strung them through her hair in braids. She smiled, pleased with the look.
She looked beautiful in that sun dress, with the beads in her hair, and freckles bursting forth all over her skin. Her eyes were bright, and that pit in her stomach was growing smaller and smaller. This was totally what she needed. She knew that now. In order to grow, move on, and move up.
She walked down the steps of her room, through the common kitchen, and out onto the back deck. It looked out onto the ocean and she leaned against the railing. The sea wind blew through her hair. Her new home. She was still a stranger to many but felt just as accepted as when she was back at the mansion. She smiled.
Soon enough she'd been to the kitchen and back to make dinner. Just a simple plate of fruit and nuts. Her stomach hadn't adjusted yet to the time change so this would be enough. She sat on a wicker chair with her feet up against the rail. She had a bag beside her chair filled with the letters from her students. With a pare in one hand, and a letter in the other, Raina set to work reading them all while the sun still had a few hours left.
Lumen looked up at the sound of Paul's voice. Without thinking she stood up to hug him. "Hey, I wasn't sure if you'd make it." she pulled apart and patted the seat beside her. "My... guest... isn't here yet." she admitted.
Out of the corner of her eye she thought she saw Jorge walk in, but he was out of her line of sight before she knew it. No matter. She wasn't doing anything illegal, just out for dinner with her, ah, roomate and meeting up with some kid? No harm there. "I'm not really sure what to expect."
Lumen made room for Paul in the booth and a waiter came by to offer him a glass of wine as well. Fast on his heels came a young looking man with dark skin and hair, and eyes that darted all about. "Jack...?" Lumen offered.
He nodded and slunk into his side of the booth. "Hello." he said quickly. Hmm. Awkward. Lumen was not happy to find she was no more sure of his age now than she was during their previous exchange. Young boys could be so difficult. Some remained looking very young well into adult years while others had beards before girls were even finding them cute. A waiter passed Jack a menu and he easily pointed to a spaghetti dish.
"Ah, that looks good. We'll have that too." the second the waiter left Jack reached for Lumen's wine glass and downed it quickly. He was a bit skiddish and now Lumen felt the same glancing over her shoulder to be sure Jorge wasn't looking. She had no clue if this kid was 21. "Would you like some, ah, water?" she pointed to the glasses the waiter had just left. Jack shook his head.
"No, why don't we get down to business." Lumen exchanged a concerned look with Paul.
"Ah, okay then. Well, I guess it's best if you just, go over the rules?"
Jack nodded. Another Waiter walked by and filled up the wine and water glasses. Jack again took Lumen's without a word. "I can't send you to a specific day, but I can aim for 20 years ago easy enough. It'll either be just before or just after your brothers abduction. You'll be an adult though so it should be easy enough for you to track them down..." he took another swig of wine.
"Alright." Lumen wasn't exactly pleased to hear she may end up a few days late. "Go on..."
Lumen couldn't help it. When Elvis shimmied down off his makeshift stage and sauntered on down to Paul only to speak in songs, she belly laughed. Tears may have even threatened to spill out of her eyes. She even glowed a little. "Oh Paul, have you no love for the king?" she chimed in.
Oh Darling, you simply must tell me how you achieve such radiance. Lumen turned to come face to face with Marilyn Munroe. Her eyes went wide. Wow, this was one lifelike sculpture.
"Radiance?"
Your skin, darling. Munroe extended a waxy arm and paired it next to Lumen's own. Oh, yeah, Lumen WAS glowing a bit. She shrugged it off though. Paul already knew she glowed sometimes, and it's not like the wax figures here could do anything about it. I think I need a bit of that. Your pastel colours brighten it too. Lumen looked down at her clothes, they seemed pretty plain next to Marilyn iconic white dress.
It was interesting for Lumen to see her so up close. Marilyn was a bit curvier and heavier than Lumen. It was refreshing to see that the artist has stayed true to her real form instead of an idolized one. Lumen always thought Marilyn was a natural beauty, though a little nuts. "Ah well thanks." said Lumen blushing a little.
"What's with him?" asked Marilyn pointing past Paul to Jack Sparrow, who, though he was still mostly dressed like Sparrow, was acting a little weird. He'd removed his hat while staring in the mirror, smoothed out his hair, and was now tucking his shirt in.
"Chewing gum is really gross, chewing gum I hate the most." he recanted over and over.
"Uh, I have no idea." grinned Lumen. She really was having a great time. Despite it all, nobody was dying, no one was hurt or in danger, and she was getting to sort of meet celebrities. This was a pretty cool date after all.
Marilyn stopped to mingle with Sherlock who had for the moment subdued Laura into quiet conversation. The three of them were laughing and chatting like life long friends. Lumen took this moment to steal away toward Paul again. "Excuse me Elvis." she said side stepping the king who shot her a grinned lip curl. "Hey there." she said slinging an arm through Pauls. "Quite the adventure we're having tonight." she shined a little more.
hi guys sorry for being awol I have been SO SICK this week. I had to miss some teaching and a few other things so Im playing catch up. Usually on Sundays is when I make sure Im caught up on MRO if Im too busy etc but tomorrow I am doing a charity thing whether i'm sick or not so can't promise I'll be on.
The Jack thread will move ahead soon, promise. Anyone who wants to get it on it still has time, so go for it. Dont worry if there's a lot because it's only meant to be a "portal" to give your character an excuse to time travel what Jack does his thing, you'll be off on your own! <3
The day had flown by. Raina had awoken bright and early. Quite literally, to the sound of birds! She was surprised however upon leaving the hostel, that it wasn't the usual pigeons that greeted her at the door step. No, not at all. There was a crowd of about 12 Iguanas. She'd been told this might happened if any food was left out. The great green lizards lazed in the sun, blinking their eyes at her. A few cautiously explored the area still keeping watch.
She'd ridden a bike to the school, dressed in a flowery dress and straw hat. She had on about an inch of sun screen but could still feel her pale skin crackling underneath. Still, for most of the day she enjoyed the warmth.
The classroom had been stuffy but she'd gotten used to it quickly enough. 40 students from ages 8-10 were in her class. They couldnt move beyond their grade until they'd achieved passing marks. Since there was so many reading problems quite a few didn't move beyond.
She'd introduced herself and told stories of New York, and the North. Then she'd asked each student to write her a letter telling her about themselves. After that the day was filled with math, spelling games, a little geography, and beach clean up. She enjoyed a light lunch of fruit and shrimp, and before she knew it the school day was done.
She was now spending her time walking along the beach, enjoying the warmth, and taking in the scenery. She'd come so far since her mermaid mutation first appeared. Before, she couldnt even spill water or she'd get fishy. Now she could happily walk in the surf and only feel the slightest of tingling. Raina wouldn't change unless she was mostly wet.
The air smelled good, clean, and sweet. The waves were rolling in. "This is where I'm meant to be," she said to herself, wrapping her arms right around her chest. "My new home."
The way I see it, I've got it set up so anyone can be in the restaurant, Lumen is unintentionally going to get Jack 'drunk' by way of him stealing her wine. He'll decide to use his ability and instead of sending just Lumen where she'd like to go, all of you who want to go will find yourself sucked in too. From this thread you can go where you want! Just be sure you link your exit so we can follow your storyline
I'll give people a chance to post, then I'll have Jack come in
Lumen had tracked the boy jack down the same way she'd track down most of her targets; through the internet. She'd brought it up with Paul once or twice... the possibility of a mutant with time travelling capabilities.
The instant she realized it may actually be legit she couldn't help think of Riori. If she could travel back 20 years and be her adult self... she could at least see who took him. Maybe even follow them. It was a shot in the dark but it tormented her thoughts day in and day out. She couldn't focus on the tasks at hand with the missing children with her brother always in the way.
After some talking with Paul, she decided the best move would be to contact the kids and at least see what would happen. Have a meeting, figure out if he charged, and lay some ground rules.
That's how it came to be that Lumen was dressed in her best sitting at a family restaurant by herself waiting for an aptly named Jack. She held a vague description of the boy on her blackberry. Fairly tall for his age, dark skin and hair, not as old as her but old enough (or so he said.) She'd left a note for Paul who was busy all day letting him know where she'd be and what time should he want to join. The table could hold 4 or 5 comfortably so Paul would be more than welcome.
And so she sat idling away on her blackberry. Her hair was down, pin straight, and white. She wore a plaid work-shirt fit for a woman and tight denim jeans. She wore a little bit of make up and her skin had a soft otherworldly glow to it.
Jack was supposed to show at 7. He insisted on meeting in a public place and not being sure of his age Lumen suggested a restaurant. Jack thought a good meal was a fair trade for consultation. They'd discuss his powers, she'd learn the parameters, and determine if this was the way she wanted to go.
The restaurant and bar portion were starting to fill up quickly as people piled in. Lumen looked almost odd sitting at the big table by herself. She picked away at her to-do list on her phone and found herself wondering if Paul would join her. Everytime someone walked by she caught herself checking to see if it was him or Jack. A waiter soon came by and offered her a glass of wine which she thankfully accepted.
