The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>> "You can do whatever you want. Just take a few steps back until you are out of my aura. I just want to see how your abilities work."
Chase was indecisive, remaining in his natural form as he shuffled back. How big was Gemma's aura? He looked towards her to be the gauge. He wasn't used to just being asked to show-off, so hadn't anything specific in-mind. Again, he offered options to Miss Gemma.
"Well, um-" he began hesitantly, "I could do something little, like voices, or just change hair color... Or, I could change everything. I could pretend to be you, or put on my human-face... But if I pretended to be you, I'd have to borrow something..."
Chase shrugged and came to pause as he said, "Whatever you wanna see, Miss Gemma. But if I change everything, you have to promise not to get grossed out."

"Okay!" Chase agreed, his voice crisp and excited. Chase took the backpack eagerly and wriggled his way into it so that both straps rested on his shoulders, getting more and more pumped as Locke shifted from instructional phase to trick-or-treating phase. Who wouldn't get pumped about free candy? He bobbed his head energetically as Locke told him to make sure and let him know if the bag got too heavy. Were they really going to get that much candy?!
And, a big kid was talking to him-- and not the same way that older kids normally talked to little kids. Not patronizing, but as if they were equals. Chase showed off his longsleeves beneath, and Locke didn't seem convinced. Perhaps Chase wasn't a good judge of this, perhaps he was too excited, or perhaps he was trying to seem tougher to the older boy.
"I'm really sure," he avowed, Chase sighed, starting to get impatient as he reiterated, "I don't get cold easily. It's really cold, where I come from." This might not be entirely true. He was really skinny. But, if he got cold, he wouldn't whine about it-- just shiver and keep quiet.

Gemma nodded slowly, and for a second, Chase feared that he offended her. His eyes colored with embarrassment. He couldn't keep his gaze still-- he actually liked this lady, and now he'd offended her. He frowned, took a hesitant sip of his milk.
>> "I know. None of them are. And you don't have to tell me right away, but you will have to tell me eventually. I need to know so I can help."
Chase looked up, trying hard not to look alarmed. He didn't have a very strong poker-face. He didn't have to tell her now, but maybe later, so that she could help .What a novelty! His face heated once again, and Chase toyed with his glass once again. Miss Gemma was so nice. If the State ever stopped looking for him, he might actually tell her how he came to run away. He was scared, beyond scared-- but eventually didn't have any time specifications. It was on his own schedule.
"Okay," he agreed. Chase nodded, shyly smiling, and gave Gemma an earnest gaze. He was a boy of his word. Eventually, he would tell her about why he ran away.
>> "All right, how about this. Do you want to show me what you can do with your mutation?"
This request was met by a more open smile, and a more enthusiastic nod. Perhaps it would have been better to inform Gemma of what he was going to do, but Chase was more of a "take requests" kind of entertainer. He slid off of his stool, away from the table, and continued to peer up at Gemma.

>> "No... Officially, it's a school. A boarding school, where students have a place to stay. Unofficially, it's a safe place for mutants. As long as they don't make trouble they can stay here, even if they are not kids. And we protect each other from people who want to harm us for being different."
Chase took a speculative sip of milk while Gemma spoke, gears obviously turning in his head-- right, she had called it a boarding school. But, it was also a "safe place" for mutants without homes. Even adults. Kind of like a foster home, except for mutants of all ages, rather than just kids without families. He nodded slowly. Protection-- that was something that he was in need of-- somewhere to hide.
>> "So, Chase. Do you want to tell me why you ran away from home?..."
Chase bit his lip, and shook his head in negation. He didn't want to talk about it. It was a long and unhappy trail of discontentment, its root lying in his mutation and his parents' loathing of it. Chase continued to shake his head, like a stubborn child who reffused to eat his vegetables. With a tight, uneasy tone, his polite reply was, "I don't want to, Miss Gemma."
Not that he wouldn't tell her, but that he would rather not-- if Gemma made him tell her about why he had run, Chase might buckle. Or, he might bolt. He shifted uncomfortably, nibbling on the bread crusts, the last remaining parts of his sandwich.
Was that too abrupt? Chase felt his face heat up as he added on, "I'm sorry-- I meant, you wouldn't like it, Miss Gemma. It's just... not a very good story."

Chase nodded his head quickly. He remembered Russell and Abigail doing similar things when they went trick-or-treating-- spreading all of their candy out on the dining room table, while Laurence and Stella combed through it all and filtered out the "bad" candy from the "good". Chase had never known that they were poisoned, though.. Check candy before eating it-- okay, he could remember that.
Next, Locke went into the etiquette once again, talking about how, after you said "trick or treat", and got the candy, you were supposed to thank them and wish them a Happy Halloween. Again, didn't sound too difficult-- Chase was an incredibly well-mannered child, or so he had been told. He was reflexively like that. Then, there was the matter of visibility-- Locke asked if he wanted the backpack or the flashlight. Chase replaced his hood, glancing between the two.
He'd have to carry each of them all night, and while the backpack would get heavy fast, he wouldn't be able to pick up residues through the robe. Chase looked at his hands, which were hidden by the sleeves of the robe, yet unprotected by gloves-- the flashlight would have skin-contact all night, which meant an entire night of resisting the urge to turn into Locke.
"Umm, backpack?" Chase requested. Chase made a mental note that he should really invest in gloves until he could better control object-based shifts. Locke then turned his attention to the issue of keeping warm. Would Chase be warm enough in what he was wearing? Chase smiled behind the hood, and bobbed his head. Through his time on the streets, warmth had become less and less of an issue. The chill only bothered him when he was hungry, and at that moment, he wasn't very hungry.
"I'll be fine," he assured the older boy, peeling back the tattered, gossamer black sleeve to reveal the sleeve of a dark waffle-knit hennley underneath. Chase smiled from behind his hood, which could be heard in his tone of voice, "I don't get cold easily."

>> "I see... What I meant was, how did you end up traveling alone? Many of the kids in this school have no other home. They come from all kinds of families, or no families at all. But if you want to stay here, I need to know what to expect, so I can protect you. Do you understand that?"
If that was what she had meant, why hadn't Gemma said so? Chase nodded his head slowly... yes, he understood, but-- why that? Gemma was a nice lady, but even the nicest adults were obligated to send children back to where they belonged.
Chase fussed wordlessly with his sleeves, weighing his amount of trust in this woman. They had only just met, and Chase liked her well enough. But well enough to risk his freedom?
"I haven't got a family looking for me," Chase finally crumbled, intently peering at his glass of milk. How much was too much information? He was scared of going back, but it was easy to live in denial of it, so long as nobody asked. He knew that the State was looking for him, but not his family, "I ran away a while ago-" Chase paused, inhaling shakily, "-There are kids here, without families? Is this some kind of foster home?"
Because if it was, he was leaving. Chase shifted his eyes towards Gemma, eyes that were colored by fear and uncertainty. He didn't realize that this could be a piece to the puzzle-- that average eight-year-old's had probably never heard of foster homes, nor knew what they were. To Chase, it was just an innocent question.

"Oh... what?" Chase murmured uncertainly, frowning. Was it something he had said? Obviously, it wasn't something that the older boy liked, for he started ranting on him. Razors in candy, rat poison on apples? "People would... do that?"
And he continued to speak of older kids stealing his candy, or people kidnapping Chase. Chase began to feel less and less enthusiastic about going out-- he wasn't big and intimidating like the older kid-- maybe it would be better if he went back to his room and stayed there for the night? It would be a lot easier to do that than to go out and risk getting killed... If the older boy was trying to scare Chase into not leaving, he was doing a rather good job. Perhaps after all these years, his parents were really just protecting him? He let his gaze flick from the older boy to the ground.
The older boy assured Chase that he wasn't going to get sent to his room, and Chase nodded hesitantly, returning the smile shyly. He didn't need to send him off, now-- now Chase wasn't too sure about going out. The kid requested his bag, and Chase forked it over. hesitantly.
"No allergies," Chase confirmed, confused. The older boy spilled a few candy bars into his bag, and began educating Chase on Halloween etiquette. Chase listened closely, his gaze, meandering from the bag to the older boy's face, "I didn't know it was that complicated."
>> "I'm Locke by the way, and I'm going to be keeping my eye on you tonight."
"You are? Are you sure?" Chase inquired, smiling in spite of himself, before catching himself and glancing aside, "I'm Chase. Thank you."

>> "Are you guys any good with chop sticks?"
"Never used 'em," Chase admitted weakly, trailing behind the two older children. As they crossed the threshold into the restaurant, Chase was hit by the scent of Chinese food. Chase's stomach yowled, and he peered over the counter as Aedus made the order. He glanced around, eyes glimmering with anticipation and wonderment. I'm so hungry.
The three of them trailed behind the waiter, watching as their silverware was laid out. The waiter than wished that they would enjoy their meal, and departed. Chase set his backpack down on a chair
"Thank you," Chase chorused in. He turned to the older kids for guidance as the waiter left. What now? Agnes thanked Aedus as well, and Chase followed suit, "Thank you, Aedus."
>> "You ready?"
It was a daunting thing, the buffet. What was he supposed to eat? Anything? Everything?
Chase nodded mutedly beneath Agnes's smile, and exchanged it. He followed behind his two elders, eyes skimming the heated tables . There was so much food to choose from... he had to pace himself, so that he didn't get sick...

>> "I understand. Sorry, I just... don't want to go through puberty again... I don't mind trying somesing else. Or someone else. I would appreciate it if you would tutor me, just... I want to stay zis age. It was hard enough to get here in the first place."
Chase listened as Jude explained himself, his excuse not quite what Chase had expected. He stared at him mutely. Wait, so it wasn't the shift? Chase was so self-conscious, so that was the first direction that his mind had wandered. And what the heck was puberty? He nodded slowly, as if he understood.
"You weren't grossed out?" Chase countered hesitantly, "Just worried about being a kid-?" He continued to watch Jude as he explained, "You wouldn't be stuck as a kid. The form would slip once you took my hat off... Wouldn't have to go through-" He twirled his hand absently, having already forgotten the word.
Now that he thought of it, which Chase would Jude have looked like, if he had gone through with the shift-- human-him or normal-him?
>> "I recently had to live as an eleven year old. No offense, but being a kid once is enough."
"What's wrong with being a kid?" Chase asked. He didn't sound offended, just perplexed. Adults always talked about how nice it was to be a kid, and none of them ever sounded like they didn't want to go back... Chase just didn't understand it.

>> "You aren't going out like that-- No flashlight? No chaperone? You crazy kid or just reckless?"
Chase had spent plenty of time out alone on the streets. No chaperone and, after the Lizard Man's instruction, no flashlight. If he had been a runaway, on his own, for that extent of time, he really didn't need a chaperone, right? Chase had never had one before.
"I didn't know I needed all of that," the little Grim Reaper murmured. The older boy had taken his mask off, so Chase removed his hood, which hid his face. His human-face exposed, Chase's gaze pointed towards the ground. His eyes were swimming with a shades of guilt, "I've never gone trick-or-treating."
>> "Relax-- I'm not going to rat you out to Ms. Taylor. But seriously, it can be dangerous out there on Halloween, you shouldn't go alone."
"More dangerous than the other nights?" Chase squeaked. Miss Gemma would not have been happy. Chase's concern was that the boy in the pig-mask would have told on him. Chase flushed in confusion and disappointment. He didn't know of anyone who could accompany him. And, if he couldn't think of someone, he couldn't go trick-or-treating.
"You aren't going to make me go back to my room, are you?" Chase inquired, letting his eyes flick to the older kid's face before returning to the ground. He couldn't help but look concerned. And, you would have to be completely heartless, or wholly unaware, not to see that Chase was practically begging the older boy to let him tag along, "Are you going trick-or-treating?"

Scrounging up a costume had been difficult enough-- with such limited resources, Chase had to get very creative. With some help from the older children at Xavier's, a costume for Chase was concocted. An older boy had an old plastic scythe and Grim Reaper's robe from a few years prior, and was willing to part with it for Chase's sake. And, he'd only worn it once, so Chase's residue took hold quite rapidly.
Now, Chase had never been trick-or-treating-- weather was usually too foul by October's end to go out, or if it wasn't, Chase was never allowed to go trick-or-treating. He got the gist of it, though-- go door-to-door, say "Trick or treat," and people gave you free candy. Thus, empty pillowcase in-tow, tge young boy was trotting out of Xavier's unaccompanied.
>> "Hold it right there."
Chase was frozen by the command that had practically been growled at him. He turned to face a much older boy in a pig mask. Chase didn't like it. The older boy sounded mean.
"Yes?" Chase inquired, his voice quiet and uneasy.

>> "Well, you will meet more of them here."
Gemma smiled at Chase, and Chase gave an uncertain smile in return. They were both pretty sure that Chase would stick around, at least for a little while. It was an unspoken fact that neither acknowledged, but both were fully aware of. Gemma poured them each a glass of milk, and passed one to Chase.
"Thank you," Chase murmured, taking a grateful sip. It wasn't whole milk, but the creaminess of the dairy product hit him. He hadn't had much milk since he'd left, and man, had he missed it! Absence had made the creaminess of it so much more apparent. Chase took a short swig, than sighed in relief.
>> "So... Do you want to tell me about how you ended up in the bus stop?"
That was a funny question. Chase set his glass down, his gaze shifting from the milk to Gemma. What she didn't know was that she had to be very specific with Chase, when asking questions. Whatever she asked, she'd get an answer to, but he tended to not elaborate.
"Well, I was going to catch the bus, so I walked over to the bus stop," Chase began, absently turning his glass with two hands, "And, I'd just eaten a hot dog--" a stolen hot dog, but that was irrelevant, "--which made me really sleepy. So, I sat down to wait for the bus, and fell asleep, so I missed the bus." He gave a nod, took another bite of his sandwich, "And then you came."

Aedus explained that he'd lied to the mob to scare them, or that was what Chase assumed bluffing to be, and recieved a pat on the leg. Chase got the message, he didn't ask any more questions. He didn't notice when James began to drive faster, the cab reaching breakneck speeds. Chase was too busy alternating between Aedus' and Agnes' windows, to look out and see if he could find, "Panda King Empire," before anyone else could call it out. He contented to be quiet, for he hadn't any other questions, and didn't know what else to talk about.
Lo and behold, after about fifteen minutes of James's panicked driving, the cab swung over to the curb and parallel parked alongside it. Chase leaned back, looking out the rear window. Above them, loomed a large, green sign that read "Panda King Empire". they had arrived. Chase undid his seatbelt yet didn't move until his older cohorts filtered out ahead of him, or until James had been paid.
"Thank you for the ride," Chase said quietly, inching out of the cab, and onto the sidewalk. All that he recieved in return was a grumbled, "Yer welcome, enjoy the food."
Chase grabbed his backpack off of the seat, and turned to the two older kids, slinging the backpack over one shoulder.

It was absolutely bizarre to watch someone shift just as you did. To watch someone else as their skin separated into tendrils and began surging forward on their own accord. The shift didn't get very far. In a panic, Jude brushed the hat off of his head, his expression quite blatant on his face. He looked thoroughly bothered, maybe grossed out.
Chase didn't know how to react. He was disappointed, because he'd wanted to see someone shift just like he did, to see from a spectator's standpoint... But the man chickened out.
Chase simply frowned and retrieved his hat, wedging it back on his head. He supposed that he understood-- Jude hadn't been shifting like that his whole life, so the feeling of your skin writhing like that was probably quite unnerving. Chase sat back down on the bench, polishing off his last remaining lunch. What had Jude expected? That he'd instantly look like someone else in a poof of sparkles? Not hardly.
"I guess it will take some getting used to," Chase said sagely, nodding his head. He took a sip of his drink, sighing faintly. One simple reaction was all that it took for Chase to clam up once again. All that work that Jude had steadily been doing to open Chase up? They were back to square one. Because the way that Chase shifted grossed him out, which, in a sense, meant that Chase grossed him out, "But you get my point, right? No borrowing clothes?"

The brunette rubbed her forehead in annoyance, introducing herself as "Ami". That was an easy name to remember. Chase could remember that name, for now...
>> "Ara. It is. Sometimes it can be rough but most of the time I find it pleasant. I like to make people smile, you see. Cutey-chan can come see it, yes? I would be more then happy to let him be my sampler."
Even quiet children could be won over by candy. Chase would have said yes in a a heartbeat, but he was thoroughly aware of stranger danger. Kids were supposed to "just say no", or something like that... maybe that was for drugs... At any rate, if an adult offered you candy, you weren't supposed to take it from them. Even if you really, really wanted the candy. Before Chase could decline, though, he was constricted into another hug. Chase squeaked uselessly, but didn't squirm this time.
>> "Ara, I'm sure Cutey-chan won't mind coming to my store, yes?"
"I should probably ask m-" Chase began, the lie closing-up in his throat. He was going to say that he should ask his mother, but he couldn't. Couldn't ask her and couldn't lie about asking her. And, if they happened to follow him, who would he ask? He'd be caught in a lie. So, Chase opted for a different channel of excuse, "I mean, it would probably hurt Kittys' feelings if I took her job."
That was a good reason. Chase looked towards Ami inquiringly. That was a good answer, right? He squirmed again, and found that he was able to wriggle free, this time. What happened to her super-strength?
>> "And you...ummm... what was your name again, Panda-han?"
Chases' eyes sparkled with humor. It was like being with an old person who couldn't remember anything. A chipper old person, though, not one of the grouchy kind. He smiled, but he didn't laugh-- it didn't look like Ami found it very funny.
"Her name's Ami," Chase said in a stage-whisper, "She just told you that, Ilaria."
