The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Chase's gaze couldn't seem to take it all in quickly enough. There was just so much to look at, for the building was so grand and there were so many mutants humming about the halls He really didn't know which way to look. They came to a pause in the living room, and at this point, Chase had gained enough confidence to walk between Agnes and Aedus without clinging to either one. But he still bore the look of a wide-eyed newcomer.
A bespectacled boy who had to be close to Chase's age lingered at the far corner of the room, but quickly came over by way of a bubble when he spied Chase. Painfully-shy introvert, meet over-the-top extrovert.
>> “Hi I’m Big league, you know like big league chew? I can, well you saw. What can ya do? Are ya new here? I’m pretty new too. I’m going to turn nine in eight weeks, how old are you?”
>> “Whooooa, Big League, calm down. This is Chase. He’s taking the tour. No need to scare him off.”
Chase looked a little shell-shocked. There were a lot of questions packed into that introduction. His gaze flickered to Agnes, then to Aedus then to "Big League". What a funny name!
"Chase," he confirmed, his face flushed. Out of all of those questions, asking for his name wasn't one of them. But, that was where Chase began, "I'm eight until January... and, uh, I can... look like other people." Was that how things normally worked? Age and mutation, just like that? Chase fidgetted with the hem of his sweater, looking towards Big League without really knowing how to react.
"Hey, you can look like other people? Like a shapeshifter? Wow, sweet! Can I see? Lemme see?" Big League chattered, almost completely ignoring Agnes. His enthusiasm was a difficult thing to quell. Chase shook his head shyly, but this didn't deter him, "Hey, that's cool, too! You're eight, too, and there aren't a lot of eight-year-old's here, so we could be friends, can't we?"

Chase paused contemplatively. Could he turn into a lizard-man?
"I guess I could," Chase mumbled, "I mean, they're still people, right? So, I could still look like them, I suppose... I don't know, I've never tried..." He really, never had. Chase wondered if it would hurt to change so drastically, or if it would be just like turning into anyone else? He'd have to find someone who'd entertain his curiosity in that department. He watched as the two of them battled over the flowers, which the green-haired boy was force-feeding to the gecko. Chase shuddered. Shades of bullying past.
Jude then showed him to the secret sneak-out by a tree, which made Chase feel rather like some sort of spy or a secret agent. The whole pretend-secret-agent mental image was only reinforced by the nighttime defenses. It almost made sneaking out a game. He committed the information to memory, and nodded his head.
They looped around towards the building, and Chase was ushered in by Jude. Chase smiled and trotted ahead, but only just, and he waited for Jude to catch-up once they were in. He listened attentively as Jude gave the grand tour, eyes roving around curiously. When Jude proposed a tour, Chase's eyes lit-up, and he bobbed his head enthusiastically. He would, of course, venture about later, so didn't need a "grand tour", but if Jude gave him a basic lay of the land, Chase would be most grateful.

>> "I see... It's okay, Chase. We can work with this. You are already in the system, and everyone wants you to get out of it, and this school is just the place for that. I'll just need to contact them, and do some paperwork, and then you can officially stay here and no one will take you away."
Chase nodded slowly, still keeping a hand to his head. It was alot for an eight-year-old to handle, but it sounded like Gemma was going to make it work. She was going to make sure he wasn't uprooted once more, she was going to make it so that Chase could stay.
"Okay," Chase agreed. And, for perhaps the thousandth time today, he murmured, "Thank you, Miss Gemma."
This time, he added in a hug. Though, from his odd angle (he was still sitting) and diminutive size, it wasn't a very good one.

>> "It's okay... It's okay, you are right where you need to be. I'll take care of that, all right? Just tell me the whole story, and I'll make sure you can stay."
Chase didn't wince or pull away when Gemma half-hugged him. He knew he wouldn't shift if she touched him, or even if he did, he knew she wouldn't freak out. He nodded lamely, rubbing at his eyes with his sleeves. He wasn't going to cry over it, they weren't going to get him-- but he was still frightened that they would. He remained nestled in Gemma's arm.
>> "So, you are in the foster system? You have no family?..."
"Everyone has a family," Chase mumbled still hiding behind his sleeve. He sighed shakily, "M-my Mom and Dad, they..." He looked for the right words. For adult words. Again, he was only eight, so it was hard for him to wrap his head around or put into words, "Didn't treat me right, because I was 'different'... the CPS called it abuse and... there was another one... neglect, I think?" Chase rolled his lips, the words feeling awakward on his tongue. His parents had done awful things to him but Chase had, in some warped way, thought that he deserved it up until the CPS stepped in, "They were bad. And so, I got taken away, and put into my first home."
He continued to fuss with his sleeve, "I was moved between too many homes to keep track of, because they couldn't decide what to do with me... so they just kept moving me again, and again..." Chase focused on his jeans, picking at the worn knee, "I didn't like it there, and nobody--" Nobody wanted him, Chase nearly said, "--Nobody knew what to do with me."
He looked towards his backpack, then up at Gemma. She wasn't going to let them take him back, this was a safe place. But, his eyes were still the same, solid black, betraying his fear. Chase averted his gaze.

>> "Zis is se outer wall. If you ever need to sneak out, I know a good spot zat only fits ze smaller kids."
Chase smiled openly. He liked the way that Jude thought. Ever the runaway, he was always keeping his eye on ways that he could get in and out of the Mansion. Most adults wouldn't tell a runaway how they could come and go as they pleased. Just because Jude had, Chase was liking him more and more. The two of them followed the wall towards the front gate, and Chase let his gaze wander.
They came to gate, and his gaze widened. It was like something you'd see in a magazine, some posh castle on the English countryside, or something to that persuasion. Chase lagged behind as they went to the pedestrian's gate, watching as Jude punched the code in. He committed the number to memory, and the two of them continued onward.
>> "Welcome to ze Mansion. Most everyone is a mutant here even zough you don't have to be to attend."
"There are humans here, too?" Chase reiterated. He was about to ask why, but that was before he spied the two mutant boys that were rough-housing on the lawn.
"They... they..." he trailed, tilting his head at the two, older mutant boys. They look different, was what Chase wanted to say, they look funny. And, they were just fine with it. He looked funny, too, though. Chase observed, "That boy has green hair. That other boy looks like a lizard."
At least, Chase thought the lizard-kid was a boy. Chase rubbed his face, his eyes scintillating with delighted fascination. Yeah, he hadn't seen many other mutants.

>> "Okay, here is what we are going to do. You will get a room, and some clean clothes. You already know where the food is. I will talk to the teachers, and sign you up for classes - as long as you are here you will need to go to school, okay? But not right now, we will talk about it later."
Chase listened attentively, quietly consuming his sandwich. Everything sounded all well and good... a room, new clothes, food, school... It sounded so nice, so splendidly normal. Chase nodded his head, and agreed, "Okay."
But there was something in Gemma's tone that implied that there was something else to be said.
>> "Chase. If you want to stay here, you will need to tell me where you came from, okay? I need to know so I can make sure you stay here, and nobody shows up to take you away. I think this is a good place for you, as long as you would like to stay, but I need to know more about you."
Chase's gaze began to get overwhelmed by a fearful, glassy black, so that his entire eye seemed a single stretch of black. His greatest fear was being found and sent back. He trusted Gemma yet didn't. In his childlike understanding of the situation, if he told anyone anything, they would send him back to his former life.
"S-Syracuse," was all that Chase replied, averting his gaze. Were they still looking for him? Was anyone? If they were, Chase was certain that they would take him back, if they found him. He fussed anxiously with his hair, tucking his knees to his chest. He liked it here. He wanted to stay here, where it was safe.
But that meant that he had to tell Miss Gemma where he'd come from.
"I-if the CPS finds out I'm here, they're going to take me back to those homes... I don't want to go back."
Chase set his half-eaten sandwich on the table, on a tissue. He wasn't hungry anymore. He looked scared, and maybe on the verge of tears.
"I like it here, Miss Gemma," Chase shifted his gaze towards Gemma's face searchingly, "Please, don't make me go back. I'll do anything."

>> "So... do you want to talk about staying here for a while?"
Chase clambered into the chair that was offered, discarding his backpack beside it as Gemma spoke. Did he want to stay there? Chase toyed with his hands. He'd have food here, and a bed, which were commodities that he hadn't had in quite a while. He could be among other mutant children, too, and accepted, which seemed unfathomable and wonderful all at once. And, if those weren't reasons enough, he rather liked Miss Gemma, too.

Aedus was smart enough to ask the questions that Chase didn't think to ask for himself. He just stared in silent wonder as the trio came into the foyer, still fastened to Aedus' side. He was tall, and he'd already proven that he was tough, so he was thereby a "base" that Chase could fasten onto for protection.
>> "So, there are classes on anything Chase could want to learn, and you go at your own pace, but how does it work in free time? I guess what I am asking is how large is the staff?"
>> “It’s a fully running school. Chase or anyone for that matter who needs it, can come in a gain a standard education that the state requires. So that pretty much means there would be classes he has to take as well as some other courses that would be just for fun or to help with his powers. And the staff is fairly large. Mainly made up of ex-students and other mutants.”
It was grown-up talk. Chase didn't pay much attention to what they were saying, except for the occasionas where his ears perked up at his own name. Chase-this and Chase-that and standard education bla, bla, bla. That's what Chase heard. He was too busy letting his curious gaze go as far as it could reach up stairways and down halls, and if someone passed into view, his gaze would fasten on them until they left his line of vision. All this, he did without straying from the side of Aedus, or if he did, he was within arms' reach of both of the older kids.

>> "Guess that depends how much they had to drink."
Chase quirked an eyebrow, cocking his head at Locke. Did that really affect your hearing? Chase had torn through bottles of water plenty of times, but never once had taking in a copious amount of liquid ever effected his hearing. The things you learned. Perhaps Chase would drink less water, that way he didn't risk hearing loss?
>> "Don't be surprised if nobody answers it ok? I mean there's got to be hundreds of doors to try in this building alone. And there's apartments all over New York."
Chase nodded faintly, and knocked. Then, he waited. And waited. And waited some more. Nobody answered. He glanced back towards Locke, and opted not to wait any longer. He trotted back to Locke's side, and the two continued onward. How much did one need to drink before the hearing began to go, Chase wondered?

>> "Zat's good. I wouldn't want to turn into goop."
Chase smiled and giggled. Jude said somethings that were really funny. Or, at least, they sounded when funny when Jude said them. He'd have to ask him why he spoke so funny later. Maybe after he said something else funny-sounding. As the bus continued to rocket down the road, Chase watched as the world flew past the windows. It was fun to ride in cars or buses. You could get to places faster than just walking, which had been Chase's primary mode of transportation ever since Syracuse.
The bus came to a halt at a particularly bleak-looking corner. Chase trailed off of the bus behind Jude, gaze roving about inquiringly. So, where was this place?
>> "Zis is it. Zis is only ze corner. It's a little bit of a walk to get to ze gate... sorry."
At first, Chase was confused. Was this man pulling his leg? this wasn't a mansion, this was a street corner. But then, when Jude clarified that they would have to walk to the gate.
"That's alright," Chase assured the ability copier. He walked. A lot. Walking wasn't as much of a big deal to him as it was to people that could afford the commodity of taking some other form of transportation. He waited for Jude to lead the way, in one direction or another, before trailing along beside him once again.

>> "Hi. Did you sleep well?"
Chase trailed into the room hesitantly, bobbing his head..
"Yeah... I didn't think I'd sleep that long," he confessed. After all, Gemma had woken him from a nap. Chase couldn't recall the last time he'd slept so heavily. Chase removed his backpack and deposited it onto the floor.
As he shuffled closer to Gemma, he nibbled at the sandwich that he'd saved from earlier.

Once the door was shut, Chase simply laid down. The beld felt completely alien to him—it was so soft, and secure, and warm. Was it wrong to feel unnerved by that. As an afterthought, Chase realized that most took their shoes off before laying down to sleep in a bed, so he sat back up, and removed his shoes, before laying back down once again. He burrowed under the blankets, hood still drawn about his head, and promptly crashed, much in the fashion of an exhausted child.
Chase might have been more exhausted than he’d originally expected, too. It had been a long time since he’d truly slept, and thus when provided with a bed to sleep in, he slept solidly—for a good two- to two-and-a-half hours—before waking up.
==//==
He awoke groggily, uncertain of where he was, but also uncaring. He knew he was safe. Chase rolled over, looking towards the door. He saw his sandwich, and his discarded bag and shoes.
Oh, Xavier’s. He smiled, skirting at the edge of wakefulness and sleep. Chase had missed beds, and wasn't in any hurry to leave the one that he was stretched out on. The bed was bigger than his old bed, too, which made him like it all the more. Finally, after dozing for an extra ten or fifteen minutes, Chase finally roused himself from the bed, and retrieved the sandwich off of the plate, munching on his sandwich as he ventured about the room. He investigated the bathroom, and the simple furniture, inquiringly.
Chase then padded to the window. The sun was setting. He shuffled over to his shoes and slid back into them, and slid back into his backpack. Was he supposed to leave his stuff in the room, or take it with him? Chase left the room and shuffled groggily down the hall, sandwich in-hand. He woke up slowly, when otherwise uninspired to wake up quickly. He made his way to Miss Gemma's room, and knocked faintly on the door. He was awake now.

>> “Nothing to worry about here, besides we’re with ya. Lead the way Agnes.”
Was his uncertainty really so apparent? Aedus placed a hand on Chase’s shoulder, reassuring him, to which Chase only replied with a subdued smile. He had a feeling it was safe, but that didn’t change the fact that he was painfully shy.
>> “Yup, this place really is a school. You can take all sorts of classes here, even those that teach you how to use your powers. I’ve actually been taking a few like that myself. Not easy controlling a bunch of bugs.”
Chase listened intently. Power control? Could there really be a day when he’d be able to touch someone without worrying about accidentally turning into them? If Chase had been close to Aedus’ side when they’d gotten out of the cab. He was practically fastened to Aedus when the two mutant-kids ran by.
They were older than him, but close to his age—and, one looked like a fish, while the other was floating on a cloud. Chase stared, eyes swimming with orange uncertainty, as he subconsciously fastened to the hem of Aedus' shirt. Mutant kids. Kids like him. Chase shouldn’t have been so anxious around his own kind, but he was—he’d never seen mutant kids before.
>> “Stratus! Gil! Be careful around those rose bushes!”
Chase watched Stratus and Gil, a few glimmers of interest shining through. He was still fastened to Aedus, though, and following Agnes quite hesitantly. He was a shy child in a new situation, so of course he’d meet it with uncertainty. They climbed the steps up towards the door, and Agnes glanced back at them.
>> “You two ready?”
Chase glanced up at Aedus. Were they? Chase nodded slowly, eyes wordlessly roving about in search of those two mutant boys. They’d already slipped from view.

The third apartment was dead silent, and dark. Locke led Chase straight past it, to which Chase only looked at the door and followed Locke onward to the fourth door.
If the third apartment had dead silent, the fourth was its complete opposite. Noise was practically throbbing through the closed door, and loud voices could be heard over pulsating music. Chase lagged behind Locke, but Locke stepped aside for him.
>> "Take the lead Kid Death, I'm just here to watch over you."
Chase sighed and nodded, skipping up to the door and leaping to a stop.
"Will they hear me?" he inquired. Not that it mattered. Chase rapped his knuckles against the door three times, for good measure, before stepping back a couple of strides.

Just before the exchange of hobbies could get far more in-depth than any eight-year-old would have ever wanted, the bus arrived, and Chase trailed after Jude into the big, metal monster. He plopped himself down directly beside Jude, eyes roving about curiously. Out of all of his time within the city, he'd never once gone into the buses.
>> "I wouldn't touch anysing you don't have to. Lots of people. Maybe worse zan putting on a hat... Would you only turn into one person? If you touch somesing in here? Or a mix of anybody and everybody?"
"It doesn't work like that," Chase replied, shaking his head, "One person's residue has to be dominant, or else all you get is mud... kind of like..." Chase dug for a proper analogy, "Like, if you put your dinner into a blender. You wouldn't be able to taste each individual thing, it'd just be goop. That's what it's like with residues in public. I can't read anything, nothing happens."
The bus thundered to life, lurching forward, and Chase let his eyes rove towards the outside, towards the enormous windows along the sides of the bus. They were up so high off of the ground... Chase folded his hands in his lap, and propped his feet up off of the chair in front of him, so that his knees were pressed into his chest.
