The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

- Elsewhere in the City, Thirty Minutes Prior -
It was a strange feeling, being on the streets once again. Being on the run after a brief period of having a home. I'm going back, Chase told himself, I'll go back, this isn't permanent. I just need to wait until Mom and Dad are gone. Maybe Miss Gemma won't give me back to them. Maybe she'll let me stay. Just the thought of going back made Chase's stomach flop, though. If his parents knew about that place, then it would no longer be a safe place for him to go. He'd have to run again.
Nobody paid any heed to the young form as it cut through the crowds, for with his hood drawn, it was impossible to see the look on his face. His look was that of a very real, raw terror, and there were tears in his eyes, which were dominated by the blackness of fear and a deep, sorrowful purple. It would be safe to say that Chase really didn't want to go back home.
His feet moved mechanically beneath him, never once slowing to any less than a jog. He kept his hood drawn, backpack bouncing as the diminutive, hooded figure navigated the streets assuredly. Chase knew exactly where he was going. Of course, Aedus would be a bit surprised to see him. Evening was settling, now, it was nearly time for supper... hopefully Aedus was home. Even though Chase had a key, he hesitated to utilize it. It was still Aedus' apartment, barging in would be most impolite.
In what seemed like no time whatsoever, though Chase had traversed a good many blocks to get there, Chase arrived at Aedus' apartment building. He went in assuredly, followed the stairs up to his floor, and soon found himself standing at the door to Aedus apartment. Chase was emotionally exhausted, and physically as well. He could feel his human form shudder, but Chase clung to it, refusing to lose for just yet. Aedus didn't know the inhuman-Chase, only the human one. What if he didn't let him in, because he didn't recongize him? Chase had to get in first, before he could unshift. Chase mopped up the tears in his eyes, and went after the runny nose. He knocked twice, shyly, upon the door, his composure slipping quickly. Please, let Aedus be home, because Chase wouldn't go in without him there.

>> “Are you new at the mansion?”
As the questions began, Chase began to lose focus on dinosaurs and began randomly putting blocks together, just to see what it was that his hands would make without really thinking about his creations consciously.
"Pretty new," Chase answered, bobbing his head quietly. He didn't elaborate unless he was specificaly asked to. He only gave answers that were as elaborate as necessary. He looked at the shape in his hand. He was making a cube, or so it seemed. So, he continued on with making a cube without paying much attention.
>> “You're a mutant, right? What kind of ability do you have?”
"I change how I look," Chase murmured, still nodding, "I look like other people... watch."
Chase shifted the wad of Legoes into one hand, while he used his other to rumple his own hair into untidiness. As if shaking the blonde out, the hair transitioned to a rich reddish-brown. Chase tugged on a lock of hair to survey the color, looked up at the older kids and made sure they saw, before reverting to blond once more. People didn't freak out about changes in hair color. It was a safe way to show-off.
"What do you guys do?" Chase inquired with polite curiosity.

Chase glanced over his shoulder when an unexpected voice snagged his attention.
>> "Worry about yourself.... Know who you are yet?"
Chase shifted his weight so that he could see Hokee, pulling away from his mother's side. As much as he loved cuddling up to her side, you just didn't do that kind of thing around other guys. It violated some unwritten guy-code.
"I was just asking," Chase retorted, rubbing his face crossly, "You weren't here, so I wanted to know where you went, and if you were okay. That's all." What was Hokee going to do about it, anyways? He couldn't force Chase to not be concerned about him. Chase did seem embarrassed about being concerned over Hokee, though, for in his protest, he'd essentially admitted just that.
And, as per his own state of being, Chase mumbled, "Yes, I know who I am. Knew enough to ask about you by name, didn't I?"
Chase wasn't trying to be petulant, just rational. If he had still been discombobulated, he wouldn't have thought to ask about Hokee. Such an inquiry implied that most of Chases' wits were about him. If Hokee had posed that question sarcastically, it was beyond Chase-- he was literal to a fault.
The young shapeshifter pulled the blanket lower over his face. It was pointless to try and shift with Gemma there, but that didn't change the fact that Chase wasn't comfortable being unshifted around Hokee. He didn't know Hokee well enough, and what little Chase knew of him, he knew the older boy want very nice. It wasn't like Gemma, who didn't much care what Chase looked like.

Gemma draped an arm over Chase and pulled him into a half-hug as she explained things to him.
>> "It's okay, baby... We are in the infirmary at the Mansion. You fell into the pool through the ice. We had to get you out of your clothes, they were soaked and freezing cold. Are you feeling warm now?"
Chase nodded mutedly. He'd remembered falling into the pool... and, now that Gemma mentioned it, he recalled being brought here, too. Well, kind of-- he remembered his clothes being taken, being wrapped in the blanket, and the gruff doctor with the glowing hands-- he didn't remember leaving the pool very well, though... running up and down the halls, a slightly-panicked Hokee.
"Warmer," Chase murmured in confirmation, wedging himself closer to Gemma's side. He wouldn't go so far as to say he was feeling totally "warm", though-- after all, he was clothed in only his undergarments and a blanket, and Chase was on the shrimpy side.
Gemma hugged him, and the anxiety in Chases' eyes was replaced by an affectionate magenta. He smiled and looked up at Gemma, snuggling closer as a small, blanket-clad hand latched loosely onto her embracing arm, as if to hold it in place. It was nice to sit so close to someone, and to not worry about accidentally turning into them...
In surveying the visible areas of the Infirmary, Chase didn't spy the older boy who'd gone into the water after him which gave way to his next inquiry.
"What about Hokee?" Chase inquired, his voice both curious and concerned as he looked up at Gemma, "Where is he? Is he okay?"

The nap was short and sweet by a childs' terms. Chase slept quite solidly for about a half-hour. He didn't open his eyes right away, but laid in his cocoon of blankets, his mind swimming around blearily. Wherever he was, it didn't smell like his room. Chase's brain churned slowly, gradually recalling the events preceding going to bed... let's see, he went outside to play in the snow... and then there was that guy with the dreadlocks... "Hokee" or something like that. Then, they played on the ice... and... then, Chase fell through ice.
Chase jolted awake, a bolt of adrenaline sending life into his veins, a shuddering gasp rocking his system. He couldn't swim! He had to get to the shallow-end and try to break through-- oh. He was not in the water anymore. Chase's heart hammered nonetheless, and the little shapeshifter couldn't help the raw fear that was coursing through his veins. He'd been so out of it, so lightheaded, when he'd been taken to Gemma's office and then the infirmary, that he hadn't remembered arriving there-- Chase had no idea where he was. He quickly reeled backwards, and had it not been for the wall behind him, he would've fallen off the edge of the bed in his retreat.
Chase hugged the blankets close, eyes flicking around his unfamiliar surroundings. Gemma was sitting at the foot of the bed patiently. Chase kept rooted to the wall, but he scooted closer to his mother.
"Mama, where are we?" Chase inquired quietly, his eyes lingering between the blackness of fear and a flicker of confusion as he regarded Gemma. He racked his brain, but couldn't seem to recall. He just needed some small details to jog his memory. Chase was still a little cold, but not as icy as he'd been before, and he still wasn't wearing any clothes, spare his boxers, either, "Wh-where are my clothes?"
Moments later, Hokee entered the room, but Chase didn't hear him... and, since his back was to a wall and he wasn't facing the door, Chase didn't see him, either. He was a bit preoccupied with figuring things out.

Once Chase was at the bed's edge, the DocProf nudged the blanket back off of the eight-year-old's forehead and touched it lightly, as if giving him a blessing.
"This might feel kind of funny, okay?" the DocProf cautioned. Chase nodded faintly, his eyes watching the DocProf to see if wanything would change about how he looked. The hand that had been placed on Chase's forehead began to exude a golden-yellow light, and from it, warmth and a pins-and-needles feeling filled Chase from head-to-toe. Chase scrunched his shoulder and his wrinkled his nose at the sensation, smiling faintly. It was a lovely change from being freezing cold. The DocProf was silent in his concentration.
Gradually, the feeling faded, before disappearing altogether as the DocProf removed his hand, and Chase regarded him with owlish, mystified eyes.
"Is there anything wrong with me?" Chase mumbled.
"Besides being very cold, nearly drowning and suffering from temporary amnesia?" the DocProf replied, smiling faintly, "No. No broken bones, no sprains. You're in a good condition. Just keep under that blanket, okay?"
Chase nodded. No problem. The blanket was warm, so he had no intent to leave it any time soon. The DocProf rose, smiling faintly, and Chase scooted back towards the wall against which his bed was positioned. Cocooned in the blanket, and feeling rather snug, he lay down.
"Try and stay awake, okay?" the DocProf requested insightfully, as he went over to Gemma and Hokee.
"Mm'kay," was the husky reply. Easier said than done-- the shapeshifter burrowed deeper into his cocoon, relishing the warmth and returning feeling in his extremities. He wasn't permitted to sleep, sure, but the doctor hadn't said anything about just closing his eyes. Chase closed his eyes, just to close them, and was soon broadsided by sleep.

>> “You did really good, Big League. I thank you so much!...Funny-smelling girl with the bugs always following her? You thinking what I’m thinking?”
>> "That's Agnes. Thank you, Big League. Chase will be home in no time. Let's go find Agnes. She should be in her room, or maybe the library..."
Big League gave the two adults a curious look, cocking his head at them. In his mind, he hadn't told them much of anything, but this seemed entirely satisfied with the information. Adults were funny like that. He had some mischief in his eyes, and a little smile upon his lips. Now this sounded like a secret-agent mission.
"You're welcome," Big League hummed, glad to have been part of a secreat-agent mission. Eh, he'd save the secret-agent stuff for later. It would be so much easier to worm the information out of Chase when he came back then to try and get details from Miss Gemma and Officer Jorge. Big League returned to his group of friends, and took his seat, which was his way of telling Jorge and Gemma that they were free to go at their own discretion.

Gemma breathed reassuring words to him, but Chase didn't unfasten himself. He didn't like the DocProf very much at all, and he wasn't going down without a fight.
Chase squirmed faintly as his mother maneuvered him from where he clung to a more manageable position on her lap, attempting to shy away. It was impossible to escape them, though. He was literally caged-in by their immense, adult forms, and was essentially powerless as they took his clothes, article-by-article.
>> "Nice family reunion and all, but shouldn't you back off the kid so his face will come back?"
>> "This is his face."
Chase frowned lightly, looking down at himself. His attire had been reduced to no more than his boxers, and now he was really, really cold. He touched his flesh, which was so chilled that it was numb, surveying his skin. So he normally looked like this, but he could look like someone else. All pieces to the puzzle. He was soon cocooned in blankets,
>> "I am right here, okay?"
Chase nodded to show that he comprehended, snuggling down in the blankets and blinking blearily. He didn't lay down, bur rather propped himself up against the wall, to watch everyone. Gemma left and went over to Hokee, and the doctor closed in on him. Chase recoiled slightly, his expression puckering into a mild frown as he burrowed his head against his knees.
"Chase, they call me the DocProf," he introduced himself, taking on a more delicate and less direct approach than when he'd first come in, "I'm a mutant, too-- do you know what my power is?"
Chase shook his head, but kept it down. Was he supposed to? Was this like those questions that Hokee had asked him? The ones that he was supposed to have an answer to?
"I can heal people just by touching them," DocProf replied, "And I can tell if something is wrong just by touching them."
"Just by touching them?" Chase reiterated. He lifted his head a fraction.
"That's right," the DocProf replied, bobbing his head. He had Chase's attention, now, "If you want, I could show you?"
Chase's curiosity overrode his fear. He lifted his head and nodded, eyes glimmering curiously. The DocProf was playing him like a harp, but Chase didn't seem to care much.
"Come closer," the DocProf instructed. Chase did as he was told, inching over to the edge of the bed.

>> “Hey, I apologize for earlier, I shouldn’t have snagged you up like that. You were just protecting your friend, I get that. I like to protect people too, that’s why I’m a cop... I understand that Chase is scared, but he doesn’t have to worry. His parents were here only so that they could make the transfer to this school legal. No mistakes so that he never has to go back to them. Both Ms. Taylor and I saw to that. If you really want to help him, then you need to tell us where he is so we can tell him he can stop running.”
Big League tilted his chin at Officer Jorge as he came down to his level, keeping his arms laced and his Big-League-means-business-face on. His fiery protest seemed to dwindle faintly as Jorge spoke more, though. It was a lot of adult-stuff that he was saying, but Big League was getting the big picture.
"So they weren't here to take him back?" Big League reiterated, "Are they gone...? Chase gets to stay...?"
He was blatantly confused, now. And then, Miss Taylor spoke.
>> "I know he is scared. I am scared too. I want to find him before he gets lost. Can you understand that?... Do you know where he went?"
Big League crumbled under the pressure, and hesitated to shake his head. But he did.
"Not really," Big League confessed, "He had this place that he could go to, with this guy who helped him out before he came here... the guy had a funny name. That's how I met Chase. It was that guy with the funny name, and the funny-smelling girl with the bugs always followin' her. She was showin' 'em around, and they all looked like friends to me, and since there aren't a lot a kids my and Chase's age I figured I'd befriend'm."
Big League was rambling now. He didn't really know where Chase was, and was trying to be helpful the best that he could. He was only spewing what Chase had told him, but had conveniently dropped the names necessary to identify people. And then casually shifted from what Chase had told him to how they'd met at the drop of a hat.

>> “Hey kid! Stop! I’m not going to hurt ya!”
Crud, the man was following him! Big League ran with all of his might, his little feet flying so fast that he was pretty sure he was flying. He couldn't let the man catch him-- because then, he'd have to talk, and he had to buy Chase time. He had to cover for him.
Too slow.
The man caught him around the waist and tossed him over his shoulder, to which Big League let out a shout of protest, and instantly began squirming in protest.
"Lemme go!" he complained, "No fair, lemme go!"
>> “Alright, calm down, hey calm down! Like I said, I’m the good guy here. I’m a cop, okay? I’m not here to hurt you or Chase. Not come on... Ms. Taylor as a few questions for you.”
Big League might have kicked. Maybe. But only because he was trying to propel himself free of the man's hold. Hey, it wasn't his fault that he wouldn't let him go. The group of other kids was giggling, which only made Big League protest more.
"No, no, no!" Big League argued, "I don't care! I don't want to talk to Miss Taylor!"
He went quiet as they got closer.
>> "Put him down, Jorge."
The Jorge-guy complied, to which Big League huffed in mild indignation and glanced up at Miss Taylor, folding his little arms across his chest crossly.
>> "We just want to talk to Chase, that's all. I have some good news for him that he will want to hear. He is going to be staying here at the Mansion. Do you know where he is?..."
That was silly. Chase couldn't be staying there. They saw his parents. And Chase had seemed so sure that they were there to cart him home... Big League huffed again. He obviously knew something, but hesitated to spill the beans. He'd get into trouble for spying. Big League itched his head, weighed his answer-- no matter what, he'd be in some degree of trouble. Might as well come clean now.
"That's silly," Big League retorted, looking up at Mama, "He can't be staying here-- we saw them. His mom and dad. Chase said they wouldn't let him stay here. That they'd take him back."
This was thoroughly confusing. He needed to get his facts straight from the adults, to gauge whether or not it was worth revealing what he knew. Because friends looked out for other friends, and protected them from bad things-- Chases' bad things were his parents, so Big League would not be acting like a friend by helping in apprehending Chase.

Getting Chase off-campus had been far easier than expected. Once off of the roof, and having established that Chase would run and keep Big League posted, Big League helped Chase up to his room (of course, by giant pink bubble), so that they could retrieve his backpack, a few extra articles of clothes, and a key on a chain.
"Where are you going?" Big League had demanded, "I mean, I know you're going away, but where?"
"You can't tell anyone. You have to pinky-swear that you won't tell a soul."
"Cross my heart."
"Remember, when I first came here? Those two people I was with?"
"Yeah, that one guy and the funny-smelling bug girl."
"Aedus and Agnes," Chase corrected, "Aedus has a place, he said I could come back if I ever needed. It's not too far from here."
And then, the two had gone to the gap in the fence, Chase slipped out and darted down the street, and was on the run once again. Just like that. Big League had returned to playing, but said nothing of where Chase had gone to his friends. But, when Miss Taylor came looking for Chase, Big League knew that something was up.
>> "Hi. Has anyone seen Chase?..."
"No, Miss Taylor," the kids chorused back, all beaming. Big League was silenced by his guilty conscience. He said nothing.
A particularly helpful soul chimed in, "Last we saw him, he and Big League were going on a secret mission."
Uh-oh. Big League glanced sideways at the loudmouth, frowning. Of course he wasn't aware of the fact that he was supposed to be quiet. Big League hadn't told them anything. And now two adults were looking to him for an answer. His gaze flicked guiltily to Miss Taylor and the man. He couldn't let them get Chase. He couldn't let Chase get sent back home.
So, Big League got up, and bolted. They couldn't ask him where Chase was if they couldn't catch him
