The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Quin listened and studied the wine in her glass as Nate continued to speak. He explained a lot of things and answered a lot of questions that Quin hadn't even asked. They gelled that way sometimes, able to pick up on subtle cues in one another's body language or the things left unsaid.
This really was it though...wasn't it? People didn't talk this way if they were leaving a door open for the future. Even if Chicago was only a call, text, or Facetime away, a much bigger distance was going to open between them when Nate walked out the door tonight. This was the only way though, Quin could see it in everything Nate had done since he'd knocked on her door.
It all made sense, the more Quin thought about it. Nate had grown up an orphan and his formative years had been spent without the influence of even a single parent. The person he was, or the person he had become, couldn't let his own little girl grow up without all the parents he could manage.
It all made sense, but it all still hurt too.
Nate finished speaking and Quin reached up a shirt sleeve to wipe away a tear she hadn't even known was getting ready to fall.
"I wouldn't trade it either." she said, voice stronger than she'd feared it would be, "You changed yourself though Nate. You just needed the chance. You've got a lot of love to give, you always have."
That said, Quin took a rather large sip of the wine Nate had handed her, eyes widening as the taste permeated her sadness, "Woah...did you take this from Devon's place when you said goodbye? It's really good."
Levity was good right? It helped detract from the silly tears that now refused to stop building and spilling over of seemingly their own volition. Maybe Nate would be polite enough not to mention them.

When Nate offered the second glass of wine, Quin took it despite the fact that she was already holding one. This was the kind of night that two-fisting wine glasses seemed appropriate.
Nate still wouldn't look at Quin as he explained the details of his departure. For the first time a little pang of panic and heartache surged through Quin. That weekend? So soon? Where had the rest of the wine in her first glass gone?
There was no reason to hold it now, so Quin stretched out her arm and set it, somewhat precariously, on the edge of the coffee table as Nate answered another one of her questions.
Nat and Norah would be waiting for him. Not just Norah. Was he trying to tell her something, or had he simply said it that way because Norah was staying with Nat? Quin wasn't going to ask, but the part of her that was heartbroken that Nate was leaving wanted to know.
Quin nodded as Nate explained how he'd said goodbye to everyone at Haven and she met his eyes as he told her that she was the one he wanted to say goodbye to last.
"Why?" she said, pulling the second glass in and wrapping both hands around it. Quin didn't want to make this any harder on Nate than it had to be, since the decision was already made...but she did feel like she deserved to hear his reasons. "Surely this was the hard way..."
There's no way on earth that even the best impostor would have been able to pull a detail that small out of thin air the way that...Michael had just done. They kept speaking and Quin couldn't help but glance down at her clothes and roll her eyes when he had the gall to point out what she was wearing.
"I didn't think I was going to be officially on duty. I grabbed the first thing I could find and put it on. We can run up to my office, I keep a spare change of clothes up there and we can cut some holes in this sweatshirt to accommodate your...wings." she managed before the sheer ridiculousness of the situation hit her like a MAC truck.
Pursing her lips together to try and keep from laughing out loud, Quin stood up and moved around the table to give Michael a better look than the cursory glance she'd given when she'd entered the room.
"You really have no idea how this happened?" Quin asked, wishing she'd gone ahead and broken all the protocols and kept her phone with her. "Can you actually walk in those heels?

A thin eyebrow crept its way towards Quin's hairline as the scantily clad lady began to make her case. It sounded exactly like what an impostor would say if they were trying to weasel their way into somewhere they really weren't supposed to be.
If this was an impostor though, they had at least done their homework. Quin suddenly wished she had dressed a bit better. It was hard to be intimidating when you looked like you'd rolled out of bed and grabbed the first clothes you could find. Even if that's what had happened, she hadn't thought she'd actually be working tonight. This...person knew her name, and Michael's code name, and enough about protocol to know that this wasn't going to go anywhere quickly unless Quin wanted it to.
Mention of another security breach brought a frown to the redheads face as she wondered why she hadn't been called in for that if she was being called in to deal with this.
"Why isn't the rest of security dealing with this...other breach?" Quin asked, skepticism still written across her face. Still...it couldn't hurt to see if things could move along more quickly.
"Fine though...I'll play ball. What was the name of the dojo where we sparred recently, and how many times did I beat you before you gave up?"

It was kind of weird being on call for Haven. It was something that had been in the contract that Quin had thoroughly read upon hire, but it was something that she hadn't thought she'd actually end up having to do. Things were so quiet at the building, it had a reputation that was either good enough to keep people away, or scary enough to keep people away. Which of the two was really irrelevant, because it generally meant that when Quin decided her day was over...her day was over.
That's why she was scowling as she made her way into the office in what was starting to feel like the middle of the night. When had she gotten old? When had she gotten boring? When had sweatpants replaced club clothes and bad TV replaced dates?
These were all valid questions, but things that really couldn't be considered at the moment, the redhead decided as she made her way into the holding room that doubled as an interrogation space.
Apparently some hooker trying to get to the residences upstairs had tried convincing security that they were Michael. It was almost too funny for words if Quin really thought about it, and she couldn't wait to take the shit out of him about this situation once someone was able to track him down. If this...lady...knew enough to warrant a talking-to...she had more than a passing acquaintance with the man.
Into the room Quin walked, nearly tripping over her feet at the scene that greeted her, elegantly perched in a chair, waiting to be seen. Glancing down at her dirty sweatshirt and old jeans, Quin ran a hand through her mussed hair and made her way around to sit across from the detainee. She had dressed for function, not formality.
"Miss. I'm sure you want to get out of here as badly as I do. Why don't you tell me what your client's name is and why they thought it was a good idea for you to...attempt to impersonate a high level employee of our organization?"

There’s this feeling a person gets sometimes, one of those things that German’s probably have a fancy name for, but you just know that something isn’t right. Someone superstitious like Quin would say that a person’s aura was off, or that the vibes they were giving off were out of synch with the way they normally felt.
Oddly enough, she wasn’t surprised when Nate told her that he was stepping down from his position with Haven and that it was happening quickly.
It was such a Nate thing to do. Nate who never did things halfway. Nate who always did things with his whole heart.
Nate who was making a study of not looking at her.
Quin swireld the wine in her glass, mostly to have something to occupy her hands as she digested what she was hearing.
Things between them had been casual this time. Casual to the point where sometimes they really weren’t even a thing. That had been the beauty of the arrangement though, they were friends, friends who knew each other so well that distance was almost as comfortable as proximity.
Still though, that little knot of emotions in the back of Quin’s mind had wondered if it would become more. If they would somehow manage to regain that magic they’d lost so long ago.
”When do you leave?” she asked simply. There were other things that she wanted to ask, that she felt like maybe she deserved to know.
There weren’t any tears, at least not now, though the redheads chest did tighten a bit as she watched Nate from across the room. She sighed softly.

Quin shrugged and smiled when Nate pointed out how cozy she looked. Coming from anyone else it might have felt like a backhanded compliment, but Nate knew her and how much she valued her free time. They’d spent many a night like this, sipping wine, eating take out, and watching movies or bad TV.
That apparently wasn’t the order of the evening though, and as Nate helped himself to a wine glass, Quin wondered what had prompted this unannounced visit.
Norah was in Chicago now, and Quin had to admit that she missed the kid a bit. There was something about the way a child saw the world that was so very wholesome. They hadn’t spent much time together, but Quin had enjoyed the small version of Nate very much.
For Nate, of course, it was harder and the redhead could hear it in his voice. For someone who hadn’t even known he was a father for a very long time, Nate had settled into the role like so many ducks to water and Quin knew the distance had to be hard for him.
Norah, it seemed, was settling in well though.
”Well, that’s good at least…” she said carefully, not sure what to say to make the situation better, but positive that she needed to say something.
”No chance of business taking you that way any time soon?” she asked, feeling slightly bad that she’d never even thought to ask about the arrangements Nate had made with Norah’s Mom.

Sometimes it was weird having a job that ran 9-5 most of the time. Quin’s entire adult life had been practically dominated by police work and odd hours. Rookie beat cops didn’t get regular shift hours, and a detective brought work home far more often than the movies made it seem.
Things had been...slow lately at Haven, and the redheaded PI had found herself coming home, eating a well rounded dinner, and going to sleep at a decent time. She could then watch TV, or read books, or browse various tea shops online, or even work out.
It was weird.
It was also nice.
It was also kind of lonely.
It was also kind of boring.
Work wasn’t the only place that things had been slow. Quin had settled herself into a kind of routine and was finding it hard to break that routine. Excepting work, she hadn’t even seen very much of Nate lately, and it wasn’t like she was out hitting the club to meet anyone else. In fact, she was doing the opposite.
Sweatpants and a crew-neck sweatshirt two sizes too big for her were the uniform of the evening, and Quin had been settled into her couch with her favorite cheap bottle of rose for about half an hour when a knock sounded at her door.
Up Quin got, padding her way towards the door on socked feet, tugging at the one shoulder of her sweatshirt that never seemed to want to stay where it was supposed to be. Peering out the peep hole and seeing Nate’s familiar face, Quin opened the door with a smile.
Oh look, he had wine too! ...and wanted to know if she was free.
Looking down at herself, Quin chuckled and pushed the door open wider to offer Nate admittance.
”Free as a bird, come on in.” as they made their way inside, she nodded towards his bottle, then gestured to hers, ”I was just having some wine myself. Join me?”

Quin had to giggle just a little bit, at Norah’s childlike wonder over the fried oreos. No matter how organic, crunchy, granola, healthy you were, there were always exceptions for carnivals. It did, however, go unnoticed by the redhead that the little girl seemed unsure what an oreo even was.
Norah led the way and Quin and Nate followed, remembering her own childhood and all the fun things she’d done with her parents. They’d been about as hippy as a pair or parents could get, but they’d always made sure she had her fill of cotton candy and sweets when they’d stumbled upon a fair. It was part of the experience and a little sugar every now and then couldn’t hurt.
Nate spoke, and Quin was just about to relate her story when what he was saying wormed its way through her nostalgia.
Quin stopped in her tracks for a moment, eyes widening slightly. There was no way Nate was just teasing her about something like that. Quin knew next to nothing about raising kids or being a coparent...but the last thing she wanted to do was undermine any core values.
Taking a couple of slightly jogging steps to catch back up, she shot Nate a small grimace.
”Did I goof?” she said, ”Sometimes I feel like I need a cheat sheet to reference.”
Oh well...it was too late now. You couldn’t just promise a kid fried oreos and then rip the rug out from under them because you were an idiot. You probably also shouldn’t con a kid into lying to their parent.
”Blame me?” she said, half hopeful and half meek. Nate’s ex wasn’t one to be trifled with.

Quin glanced Nate’s direction as they worked to keep pace with Norah. The subject of his childhood was always an interesting and sad one. Quin couldn’t imagine what it would have been like to grow up without parents. If anything, hers had been over involved in her life until she’d decided to move to New York (of all places) and pursue a career in law enforcement. This wasn’t the time to dwell on such things, though, now was a time to celebrate the end of what had apparently been a successful school year.
Nate agreed to Quin’s subtle suggestion about snacks, and she nodded her agreement to his terms. Norah was a good kid when she wasn’t hopped up on sugar, how different could things be with a few treats thrown in? Besides, Nate might talk a great game...but when it came down to it he took his parenting duties very seriously and really was a great Dad to the little girl bouncing down the midway. Quin was simply a visitor in their happy little family, and the last thing she wanted to do was overstep. ”I’ve got some experience wrangling drunk and disorderly perps...how different can a sugar high seven-year-old be?” The redhead added.
”Hey Norah!” Quin called out, ”I think I saw a fried oreo stand a little ways back, right next to a corn dog place.” these were both things that the usually health conscious Quin would have avoided...but they were at Coney Island and she definitely wasn’t a stick in the mud.
Ahh Coney Island. The lights, the fairway, the constant smell of something being fried. It was a beautiful thing. It always had been. There was something about this place that screamed of old New York and days gone by. There was a reason that Coney Island was an iconic part of New York. It was history.
It was historic for other reasons too. For years now, Quin hadn’t been able to look at the Ferris wheel out on the island without thinking about Nate. That in and of itself had been reason enough to avoid the place completely for a couple of years while the proverbial dust had settled on their relationship.
That was all ancient history now, though, and she was back here with the man in question and his daughter.
Things with her and Nate had been blissfully uncomplicated for a long time now, but Quin couldn’t help but notice how much time they were starting to spend together. It didn’t matter though, they weren’t labeling things and that was fine. There was no need to fix things that weren’t broken, right?
Nate spoke and broke Quin from her mental reverie and she smiled over at him as they walked down the midway. ”Kids always make me wonder where all of that energy goes?” she said, amused contemplation coloring her voice. ”It’s like one day it’s there and the next you’re an adult...bluh.”
As for the rest, ”It always is going to be a special place, isn’t it?” she said, taking an almost involuntary glance towards the Ferris wheel, then at the little girl, then finally back to Nate. ”So what’s first? Sugar, games, sugar, or rides?”

Heh. A world where defense wasn’t necessary. Quin supposed if you were built like a small truck, defense wasn’t very important. Quin was almost obscenely tall for a woman and always had been, but she’d been willowy growing up and it had become obvious pretty quickly that she wasn’t going to be able to overpower most people. When she’d first started taking martial arts lessons, her teacher had recommended aikido. It had served her well in the force, considering the fact that Police were always expected not to take the offensive against perps. Now that she wasn’t a cop anymore...offense was an option.
Her impromptu teacher did some demonstrations with the bag and Quin watched intently. Kickboxing looked a bit more...graceful than some of the other styles she’d been working with, even with someone as large as her new friend working the bag. Quin was quick and she could see some ways in which the offensive style could work with the holds and throws she already knew. Punch, follow-through with a forearm and elbow. Do the same, but follow through with a kick.
Turning back to her bag, Quin mimicked the movements slowly. It felt right somehow. ”I like this.” she said, going through the movements a few more times.
”Do you know of any gyms in the area that exclusively teach this style?” she asked. It was all well and good to fumble about on your own, but having a teacher definitely helped. ”Or anyone who teaches?”
Had she been fishing for that kiss, or had she and Nate simply been on the same page? Did it matter? Probably not, the redhead decided as she gave herself over to the kiss.
Far too soon a little voice in the back of Quin’s head interrupted to remind her that there was no way that this was work-appropriate activity. So what?! Hadn’t the little voice seen Nate loosen his tie? Hadn’t it seen her put that folder down? That meant they were on a break.
Still…Quin unwrapped her arms from around Nate’s neck (When had that happened anyway?) and smiled at him sheepishly, cheeks just a bit pink. ”You’re bad for productivity.” she chided, glancing quickly at the to-do list she’d written up for the day.
Though...she glanced at the clock, ”I haven’t gotten lunch yet, do you have any plans?”

Case files didn’t seem to be a problem, though an eyebrow rose slightly at the fact that Mr. By-The-Book was going to break a rule as big as department confidentiality. If Quin hadn’t still been feeling particularly hostile towards Ashton that would have been enough to make her pay attention to the case. As it were, she’d look over the case file and crime scene photos herself and make a decision when she had them in front of her.
He would get them to her tomorrow, ”You can drop them off at my office.” the redhead said with emphasis. ”I’ll let the secretary know that you’ll be coming by and you shouldn’t have any trouble getting in.” Security was tight at Haven HQ and uninvited guests rarely made it past the lobby. If Ashton happened to run into Nate, things would be awkward...but it would be better than him continuing to show up at her apartment unannounced. In fact, she decided, she’d simply explain the situation to Nate tonight.
Speaking of which...it looked like his ten minutes were up. Quin checked the clock and confirmed that they were. She had more questions, but they could wait. Work/life balance were far more important, ”I’m not helping you…” Quin said out of reflex, instantly feeling petty, but not knowing what to do to change that. ”I’m just working against the bureaucracy.”
Not sure what else to say, she looked at the clock again and started gathering things to leave.
”If I don’t get going, Nate will wonder where I am.”

The story wasn’t all that long, though it did cover some finer points that Quin didn’t was already familiar with. Suicides were some of the worst scenes that cops had to investigate. Any death was tragic, but playing witness to scenes like those tended to leave a mark.
Lots of times those scenes were open and shut as Ashton described. Sometimes details stuck with you and made you want to look deeper. It was impossible to know exactly what was going on in someone’s head when they made such a dire choice...but there were some consistencies.
A lot of the things Ashton was describing were strange. The steak in particular suggested someone planning for the future. Not that people didn’t make snap decisions...but still.
Quin realized she’d been quiet for some time as she tried to roll everything over in her head.
”No family to raise a stink?” she said, brows drawn together in a frown. ”And upper brass just wants to move it aside for something more sparkly?”
He had to have known that this was something she simply wouldn’t be able to let go. Quin sighed.
”Can you get me a copy of the case file? It’s going to be hard to do this without any details.”
