The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

If things didn’t stop happening at warp speed, Quin didn’t know what she was going to do. One minute she and Will had been walking out of Haven to look for Quin’s laptop. The hope had been that they’d find the laptop and that Quin would be able to attend her work call later in the afternoon. All of Quin’s work would be there and she wouldn’t have to try to explain to her professors why her work wasn’t done.
Now things were going wild again, wild like they had been the day before. Lee seemed disappointed that Quin hadn’t spoken to Michael that morning, ”I didn’t want to interrupt-“ she started, but Lee and her companion were talking like she and Will weren’t even there.
They were back? Could he do it while walking?
They were real? They were everywhere? They were spirits?
They were there.
Quin’s eyes widened and she actually stumbled a step back as actual people flickered into existence around them and started holding a conversation with Lee and Tarin as they started to walk down the street. Tarin had said something and in her shock, Quin had almost missed it. They needed help? If they were good in a fight?
Will’s voice pulled Quin out of her thoughts and she looked over at him and blinked a few times. He spoke again and pointed out that whatever was happening with Lee and Tarin it was in the same direction that they’d already been heading. Smiling a small smile and shrugging her shoulders as she took a deep breath, Quin nodded and started moving to catch up and find out what the hell was going on.
”I’m not hallucinating…right?” she said to Will as they moved ”Those were ghosts….weren’t they?”

That was Lee.
Quin was still trying to figure out how Will would have known Lee as the two of them crossed the uncharacteristically quiet street. New York, even Manhattan, was huge and there were so many people. Coincidences like this were strange and Quin kicked herself a bit for having not checked horoscopes today to see if anything like this made sense. The thought almost made her laugh though, wondering if there had been anything in the stars to suggest that a millennias-old sorceress would be terrorizing the city the previous day.
As she approached, Quin noted that Lee was holding hands with the other person and decided that must be the boyfriend she’d mentioned when they worked out.
Will greeted Lee and Quin did the same, “Small world, I guess…” she said, reiterating her thought from earlier.
Introductions were made and Quin looked down the street,
“We got caught in all the mess yesterday. Long story short, we ran into Michel and ended up back at Haven. My laptop got left in the mess at the coffee shop where he works and we were going to see if we could find it since things seem to have calmed down.” she said by way of explanation.
The man with Lee looked over at her with a small sigh after Quin finished speaking, ”So much for more info.” he said, then looked off into the distance a bit, ”They’re back. Want to listen in?” he said, again to Lee.

Yesterday had been a day.
Quin had been looking for somewhere to study. Somewhere relatively quiet that she could sit down with her laptop and knock out some of the mountain of work that she’d been assigned by her professors.
As she’d struck out over and over again, Quin had remembered an offer of a coffee and a description of a neat sounding space.
The coffee had been excellent, and the space, and the conversation as well and Quin had finally settled in to do some work when disaster had struck the little game cafe in the form of three baddies spoiling for a fight.
They’d gotten more than they’d bargained for with Will and Quin and the two of them had embarked on a wild day of adventure that neither of them had really wanted. Will had gotten stabbed, Quin had bruised her ribs, but they’d managed to survive a few situations that could have easily become unsurvivable very quickly.
When Quin logically thought about everything that happened it almost seemed like it was fiction…from the church, to the giant truck that Michael had used to drive them back to Haven, to the five thousand year old Mystic who had been responsible for all of this…
Then they’d had a freezer pizza and watched TV before Will had crashed on her couch and Quin had gone to bed.
Life was weird.
This morning found them up and about much earlier than Quin had thought she’d be up and about. Sleeping propped up on pillows hadn’t been all that comfortable though and there had only been so long she could tolerate laying in bed and being as quiet as possible before she had given up and just gotten up. Now Will was obligingly going with her to see if they could find her laptop and Quin was equal parts hopeful and pessimistic that it was a thing that was even possible.
Just as they were stepping out onto the street, the calm morning as a stark contrast to the chaos of the day before, Will stumbled and for a moment Quin panicked, thinking that something had happened before he managed to right himself and apologize, pointing out that he’d simply caught sight or sound of someone he knew.
Following his line of sight, Quin’s own eyes fell on a familiar figure and a non so familiar one as well.
“There’s no way the world is this small…” Quin said, taking a few steps forward before calling out, ”Hey! Lee! Wait a minute.” because that was most assuredly the woman who had kicked Quin’s ass up and down the mat just a few days before.

Will admitted to being worn out as well and Quin just nodded. Adrenaline was funny like that. When it finally faded away it left you all frayed around the edges and worn out…like all of the energy it had taken to power the hammering heart and panic fueled sprints caught up at once. Not to mention the fact that they had both probably used their powers more in a single afternoon than in recent recorded history.
It made sense that they were worn out.
It seemed like Will was going to accept her offer for him to utilize the couch as a sleeping space and Quin nodded to his reasoning. It was a very comfortable couch and the thought of going further than her own room was absolutely abhorrent to Quin. It made sense that Will felt the same way.
He also apparently didn’t snore and therefore wouldn’t be a bother. ”I don’t think I do…” Quin said, tilting her head slightly in thought. Nobody had ever indicated that she snored before…not that there had been many people who had observed her sleeping over the last few years. ”Hopefully it’s not an issue, she added with a shrug.”
As for Will’s insistence that he didn’t need much, Quin shook her head, ”I’ve got stuff…one sec” she said, slowly getting up from the couch, avoiding more than a slightly uncomfortable tug from her sore ribs as she got to her feet and headed into her room.
Snagging her spare comforter and a spare pillow from the shelves in closet that was her second favorite thing about the apartment, Quin made her way back out to the couch and dropped the pillow and the fluffy blanket there. ”No turn-down service, but it’s better than a bunk.” she said.
Now that she was up, Quin didn’t think it made much sense to sit back down…especially if Will was as tired as it seemed.
”Bathroom is down the hall on the left, you know where the kitchen is…” she said, suddenly feeling a bit awkward. ”Guess we’ll see where things stand in the morning…”
With that, Quin turned and headed for her room, pausing just a second to say, ”Night Will, thanks again.” before shutting the door.

”I know I’d take an angry cabbie against most magical threats any day of the week.” Quin said when Will latched onto the wishful thinking that she had projected a few moments before. You simply didn’t mess with the cabs during rush hour…that was when they made their money and they did not like interruptions. Quin had to think that they were furious today…some were probably still running.
It was an interesting line of thought that Quin let her mind wander down for a moment. What would it be like for someone who had existed that long ago to suddenly wake up in the modern world?
Quin had a little bit of unique perspective into what it was like to wake up and not recognize the world. It had been wildly and intensely disorienting and Quin’s world had only changed by a decade and a half.
According to Michael though, this woman was single minded in her pursuit of…chaos? Getting what she wanted? It almost didn’t make sense, but five-thousand years stuck as a statue would probably have done wild things to anyone’s mind.
Michael. Will agreed that knowledge would be great, but that contacting Michael while things were still touch and go was a bad idea. Maybe in the morning though?
They were quiet for a few moments then, and Quin shook her head at the images and videos that kept running across the screen with the reporter’s commentary.
Will spoke and Quin nodded, if she’d been here all day studying like she’d been supposed to do she may not have even realized something was going on.
”Same.” she said, ”Hell, I might not have even known a thing until I left to go to class tomorrow.” Quin didn’t often watch the news and there wasn’t much to see from up here. Especially now that the sun had sunk behind the buildings.
”It’s crazy to think….” she said, stifling a yawn at the end of the words.
“I’m gonna have to crash soon I think…” Quin said, ”The offer to couch surf still stands.”

How had people felt safe enough to film in the middle of all that chaos?
Quin knew that if she or Will had stopped to try and record anything they’d have been seriously hurt or worse. The baddies who had shown up at the coffee shop had been out for more than simple property destruction and looting, they’d absolutely intended to hurt people. They’d also succeeded.
For the first time since everything had happened, Quin really stopped and thought about the big picture. A single person had been able to bring this level of chaos to the city, and had been willing to do it to get what they wanted. Quin couldn’t imagine wanting something bad enough to do this to an entire city of people.
It did look like things were dying down though and Will apparently agreed. That was good. That meant that Quin wasn’t just fooling herself in opposition to things still being awful. Quin looked at her phone and frowned, wondering if Michael had managed to accomplish what they’d wanted to accomplish. Had they actually managed to stop the threat before things got worse?
Yes. Of course. That was exactly what had happened and as Will voiced the thought, Quin nodded slowly, ”Of course she did. How could someone who is five-thousand years old possibly know what kind of mess they were bringing down on themselves by starting something in New York.”
The words hung in the air for a few moments in their somewhat false bravado. ”The last thing I’d want to do is interrupt Michael if they’re in the middle of dealing with something, but boy I’d love to know what their thoughts are on everything…maybe I’ll call or text in the morning.”

Will explained what it meant to fawn and Quin tilted her head slightly at the explanation. That made…sense? Of course people were more complex than a simple fight or flight reflex.
Nodding slowly, Quin couldn’t help but smile just a little bit, ”Not the one I’m most familiar with…but it makes sense.” she said. No, for Quin, things really were pretty black and white. Today Quin had fought, then Quin had run. The other things weren’t even a thought. Maybe that was something worth thinking about. Maybe jumping into every situation with both feet wasn’t the always the right call.
As she looked for a local station, Quin glanced over at Will, noting that he honestly looked pretty chill at this point…or just completely worn out and wrecked from the trauma and intensity of the day. It had been a day. Quin honestly didn’t know how she was doing so well. The adrenaline had to have worn off ages ago, was this just how things worked for her? Was it going to be one of those things where the second she laid down she’d be fast asleep? Would she have those weird dreams tonight where she thought maybe she was getting flashes and imprints from her former life?
Will spoke and Quin jumped slightly, pulled from her thoughts as she blinked a couple of times and nodded. That was probably the exact same thing she was going to do.
Was she up for it?
”You got it.” she said, starting the stream.
There was…a lot of cell phone footage. It seemed as though the news stations hadn’t wanted their people out in the fray. That made sense, miscreants and evildoers didn’t really respect press passes and there had been a fair amount of casualties over the years when they’d tried to put people out in the field.
The violence had been widespread and varied and there was definitely damage up and down the island.
It did however seem like things were settling down as the night progressed.
”Guess that means we’ll be able to get out tomorrow. Things seem to be settling down.”
That was definitely a relief. Maybe Michael and their friends had managed to get things under control. Maybe the bigger threat that they’d alluded to wasn’t going to actually come to fruition.

Will found her little napping trick odd, did he? Quin smiled across the couch and shrugged her shoulders, ”It’s like a reset.” she said, ”Even if it’s only an hour, a half hour I can usually focus on something that needs doing.”
Was it a panic response? Will’s version of fight or flight was also far more detailed than the one she knew, what were the other two parts he’d said? Freeze made sense, Quin knew all about freezing up when the shit hit the fan but… ”What does the fawn part mean? I’ve never heard that before….” she asked.
Will seemed nearly as incredulous as Quin felt when the topic shifted back to the real issues they were facing. Like something out of a Saturday morning cartoon…Quin just nodded. How often had Quin’s life felt like that, or something out of a poorly written novel?
Will was messing with his arm again and Quin frowned, mildly frustrated with herself for circling back to this topic yet again. After a moment though, Will stopped and seemed to relax a bit, then mused what the media coverage was going to be like.
”It definitely sounded like this was pretty widespread. With the amount of cell phone footage that’s sure to be out there, they’re going to have to actually acknowledge that this was more than just a slightly wild Wednesday…” Quin said, reaching out to grab the remote and fiddle with the buttons until she could find one of the local news stations. Glancing over at Will and frowning slightly, Quin said, ”Want to see what they’re saying right now? Surely there’s something….but if it’s too much too soon then nevermind.” The words were sincere, not the least bit judgmental or mocking, not even in jest.

Quin shook her head and let out a disgusted little sound as Lee listed the reasons she had such a hard time finding sparring partners that would actually give her a challenge. Owing to her size, Quin didn’t tend to get dismissed quite as easily as some women, but it was always assumed that she was going to be slower or weaker than her male counterparts. A lot of times it was true, sometimes it wasn’t.
Still. It was gross on several different levels that Lee had experienced these issues to a degree that she hadn’t been able to continue her training until she’d met Michael.
Michael was excellent at breaking rules. The few times they’d worked together Quin had learned that lesson explicitly.
Lee had apparently learned a thing or two as well in that fight, but didn’t want a repeat of the aftermath. Noting the several places she knew were going to be bruised after today, Quin couldn’t blame the other woman.
”Well, then we will have to do this again…” she said. If Lee wanted to toss Quin around the mat, Quin wasn’t going to argue, maybe eventually she’d figure a few things out and be able to compete.
”Maybe a couple of times a month to start as long as you don’t mind potential sudden schedule changes? I can be pretty flexible, but on top of classes I’m an aide to Senator Lanyi when she’s in town. It all depends on the Senate schedule, but sometimes I’m basically on call.”

Apparently being in these kinds of situations was a universal experience for mutants…at least in Lee’s experience.
Lee had been a teenager the first time she had found herself in the kind of situation they were training to prevent…that sucked. Quin knew she’d had a pretty idyllic childhood, but knew plenty well that not everyone had.
It was validating to hear Lee say that as long as it was important to Quin to learn to fight then it was worthwhile and the redhead nodded. ”I guess that makes sense…” she said, smiling slightly.
Lee pointed out that she’d had a major lack of sparring partners and Quin shook her head. It wasn’t a shock that people underestimated the other woman, but it was ridiculous.
“Why not?” Quin asked, ”I’ll give you a hundred percent, but there’s no way I can light a candle to Michael if that’s what you need to have a run for your money.”

Again, Quin had to think that Lee was speaking from experience as she pointed out that sometimes there was nobody there to save you. Quin…honestly couldn’t relate to that in her recent experience. The redhead knew that she’d been in a situation like that at least once.
Once. Lee knew how to fight the way she did, hadn’t been taught, and spoke like she’d seen some shit….an Quin was waxing dramatic over a single bad encounter at a bar.
Quin shook her head, suddenly a little bit embarrassed.
“I don’t know when a law student is going to need to know all of this…it’s not like I’m in those kinds of situations very often anymore.” she said.
”But I do appreciate you taking the time to work with me.”

Quin could imagine how cranky people had been. There had been cries of tyranny and oppression from the straw crowd and it had seemed silly at the time and seemed even sillier now. It was downright funny when Will suggested that the attack at the shop today had actually been disgruntled, straw-loving patrons out for revenge and Quin laughed, shaking her head a bit as her ribs twinged in protest. ”That would be my luck…”
Will insisted that his arm was okay and that it was just starting to stiffen up. Quin supposed that made sense considering the kind of injury, but she didn’t really know a thing about any of that beyond basic first aid. At least he’d been able to see a doctor before things had gotten crazy at the hospital.
They were good at bouncing topics though and Will compared it to avoiding something you didn’t want to do by doing something else you didn’t want to do…less? It was somehow easier to talk about straws and turtles than what they’d been through earlier in the day.
Because that’s exactly what they were doing wasn’t it? Getting away from everything that had happened by talking about literally anything else. The problem was, using Will’s analogy, the fridge still needed cleaning eventually.
”That does make sense, but knowing me I’d just get decision paralysis and nothing would get done.” Quin said, knowing that Will had just been using an example, but running with it anyway, ”Or I’d do this thing I do. When I get massively overwhelmed and feel like I have so much to do that I don’t know where to start I take a nap.” It was a strange coping mechanism, but somehow she was always able to figure out what to do after those stress induced naps.
Realizing that she’d lost the thread of the conversation a bit, Quin shook her head, “Magic mummies thought….” she said, shaking her head, “If it wasn’t all so…real, it would sound like something out of a movie, wouldn't it?” In spite of everything Quin had seen and experienced, the wheels in Quin’s mind just could help but spin at the whole ‘ancient Egyptian’ thing.

”The electric bits were just fine.” Quin said, “But the guy at the repair shop looked at me like I was an idiot when I asked if they could just fix the other parts.” she shrugged, ”Kept asking if I’d gotten it wet and put it in the microwave or melted it somehow.” It had gotten frustrating enough that Quin had just left and gotten a new phone…again.
She’d gone on an absolute eco-rant since then though and breathed a small sigh of relief when Will laughed a little instead off looking at her like she was a crazy person. Then he responded and she relaxed a bit further. Why she was particularly worried what he thought about her environmental convictions, Quin wasn’t sure, but there it was.
Working near the University, Will had been on the front lines of the plastic straw ban. ”And you said you’d never seen anything like today…you can’t tell me people weren’t up in arms.”
She smiled, ”Sea turtles are awful cute.”
Will continued and it seemed like he actually knew quite a bit about the issue at hand. Working in an industry that used straws gave him a unique perspective too. Quin had thought about the impacts to business owners…but the workers in the shops were another thing entirely. Paper straws did kind of suck, which is why Quin generally went with reusable bottles, despite what the disposable ones today suggested.
That thought trailed off and Quin had to marvel a bit at how they’d gotten on this topic. Chaos had reigned all day in the city, they’d both almost been badly injured or worse, and here they were ranting about sea turtles and microplastics.
Will was rubbing his arm where he’d been stabbed though and Quin frowned a bit, ”You sure you don’t want any ice or anything for that arm…?” she said, not knowing if that would actually help, but wanting to do something.
Shifting back to the topic at hand, Quin couldn’t help but think it probably seemed weird that a huge part of who Quin was centered around plastics and their availability and she was staunchly arguing against their pervasive role in society.
Will made the point that they should be looking elsewhere but weren’t because plastic was cheap and Quin nodded her head, smiling over at Will a moment later.
”We sure are good at getting deep at a moment’s notice.” she said. ”Might as well solve the world’s problems while we’re waiting for New York's to calm down.”

It took Will a minute to answer her question and Quin listened intently when he started to speak.
What she had asked Will to describe was obviously difficult and Quin nodded at his analogy. She’d had similar trouble when she’d tried to describe how she could sense when there were materials around that she could work with. It was hard to describe an innate sense that you possessed that nobody else had or could experience.
He kept talking though and it seemed like Quin’s assumption had been at least a little right. Will said he got some “feedback” though and Quin frowned, he’d said at the church that it wouldn’t hurt him to help bring down her pain level. Maybe that “feedback” was something different. Quin decided she was going to go with that.
The bottom line was that the smaller, more complex things were not something Will thought he could mess with, or mess with well. There were also things that didn’t like moving or moved other things along with them. Quin had more questions now, but didn’t ask them. She didn’t need to poke and prod any more.
Will joked about Quin’s powers and her past tendency to put finger marks in things and she shook her head and smiled, ”It’s all fine and dandy until your monitor stops working, or your trash your third cell phone just because you get a little worked up.” It had been an expensive problem for a while. A problem that had been worse right after she’d woken up on that table. Like her powers had taken longer to adjust than the rest of her body. Those first few days had been…rough.
Talking about the environmental concerns of plastic was a far better way to spend brain power tonight though. Will brought up microplastics and Quin nodded enthusiastically. ”They’re everywhere.” she said, working the plastic bottle in her hands again as she spoke, ”We breathe them in, we eat and drink them…in the oceans the plankton and krill get infested with them and get transferred up the food chain like DDT did…biomagnification or something..” Quin shook her head, ”It’s an even bigger problem than plastic straws and sea turtles….” Quin sighed, ”Don’t even get me started on the Pacific Trash island…what I wouldn’t give to find a way to get out there for a day.”
Realizing she’d been ranting, Quin shut her mouth and cringed a bit in Will’s direction, ”Sorry…” she said, ”Old habits and all that…”

“It’s the only polite thing to do.” Quin said, when Will promised to only find the best color and taste combinations. ”Just avoid anything that makes you want to make a face when you say it and it should be fine.” Something Will said had caught Quin’s attention though. ”If it’s not…labeled, how do you tell what’s what?” she asked, thinking again that he hadn’t had any trouble in the church, or just a little while ago here. Maybe it was just the more specific things that weren’t obvious. Maybe Will’s power just worked in a broader sense for now.
Quin shook her head when Will asked if it was easier to shape the plastic with her mind than her hands and Quin shook her head, ”Can’t really shape it with my mind at all. Need to be touching it for it to get malleable. That would be cool though…maybe someday.” . Maybe if she practiced enough she could make that ability to carry things with her mind more of a precision skill than it currently was.
Will moved a bit closer and Quin watched with her head tilted slightly to the side as he poked and prodded and smooshed what had once been the plastic water bottle. People always thought this was a pretty neat trick. Will said he could see himself making all sorts of things into stress balls like this and Quin nodded, ”I have to be careful sometimes. I do it without thinking.” she said with a small smile, ”If I’m holding onto something and I get upset or over emotional, I’ll put finger marks in it. It’s not so bad now…but a few years ago….”
Will pointed out that she could wreak some havoc on pretty much anything that contained plastic and Quin nodded, ”You almost wouldn’t believe it…” she said, ”Even the most expensive and advanced things on earth rely on plastic. Tiny little delicate pieces of plastic that can cause absolutely catastrophic failure if they break….” It was always humbling to think about.
”I’d honestly be much happier if there wasn’t so much of it around though.”
