The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. "Eleven years I've owned this place. I was sixteen when I came here and bought it."
Right after killing her mother she'd run to New York. For a week or two she'd gone without a place to live while she looked for someplace decent. In the end Cosmina had settled on this place because it was easy to hide here. Very few people thought of living in warehouses. After answering that question Cosmina watched him think. She'd certainly given him enough mysteries to think about. It was amusing to watch him try and riddle things out. Eventually she tired of that so, when asked, she picked a bottle at random from the liquor cabinet and closed it. It turned out to be rum. That would do.
"Rum then."
A quick twist of the lid and Cosmina poured some of the liquid into either glass. The bottle she set on the counter and she then took the glass he offered and took a sip. That would do nicely. Glancing back to Effigy she smirked and raised the glass in a mock toast.
"To a successful heist."
Here Cosmina was with a decent amount of cash and a few new pieces of clothing in her bag. She was sharing her home with a man she'd only met earlier that day at the store which ended up providing the cash and clothing. And now drinks. Maybe that would have bothered Cosmina if she weren't used to being around total strangers most of the time. Cosmina took another sip of her rum. She got by and her bank account grew steadily. What was there to dislike in that situation?
While Effigy inspected her dwelling Cosmina watched him. He was no threat she determined. She wouldn't let her guard down. That was a foolish thing to do no matter the company. There were plenty of people who wanted her dead for some reason or another. This one however posed no danger. It was amusing to watch him wander around her abode. He appeared a little shocked at the size of the television. That only served to widen her grin. Belatedly she replied to his initial comment.
"It's not much but I own it entirely. No one to pay rent to and, other than yourself, no one that knows I live here."
So he'd lived in a warehouse before huh? That was interesting. The circumstances which led to it probably hadn't been pleasant. They generally weren't. Most people would call the reasons she came to New York unpleasant. Then again most people got mad when she tried to kill them. Really, it was just a job and they weren't going to stay that way forever. His question about the clocks brought her back from her thoughts and she wandered over to the sofa where she sat down.
"The clocks? Practice."
A cheeky grin split her face and settled back into the lines of her normal smile. Let him try and work that one out. Honestly she'd be a little disappointed if he couldn't. Meanwhile she remembered that he'd mentioned wanting a drink on the way here. Cosmina stood again and walked slowly over to the kitchen area. Opening up a cabinet she motioned him over.
"Pick your poison!"
Of course Cosmina didn't keep her actual poisons there. She did own a few a they resided with the rest of her work gear. The cabinet was filled with various bottles of alcohol in various states of fullness. Cosmina did enjoy a drink alone every now and again. In particular after a mission had been extraordinarily foul in some way and she just don't feel like leaving the warehouse.
"Glasses are in the cabinet just right of that one."
It had been a great sparring session with Basile. The French man was old but he could still fight like the professional that he was. Cosmina always enjoyed her fights with Basile. He openly admitted that he couldn’t teach her anything more about savate, her chosen martial art. However, since the both of them were well versed and lacking opponents in their style that could challenge them they met regular in order to keep their skills sharp. It was unfortunate that he would likely die soon. Cosmina imagined the gruff old man to be what her grandfather would have been like if she’d known him. Of course Basile’s death didn’t matter. He’d be back eventually. Then she could spar with him while he was young and vital.
Cosmina was back in her street clothes, jeans and a long sleeved t-shirt, and back on the streets now. She was headed to her car. Her Jaguar XKR convertible was parked not too far from here. In fact she could see it just at the end of the street. That was why she was frowning instead of smiling. Some idiot was trying to steal her car. In broad daylight no less! Cosmina looked up. She’d lost track of time. The sun was still up but it was fast setting. That made it a little more excusable but not by much. He was in plain view for pity’s sake. Her smile found its way back to her face but now it had a dangerous look to it. If he insisted on being a fool then he would be treated like one.
One quick activation of her mutation later and Cosmina was walking placidly up to her vehicle where a man with horribly shaggy black hair looked like he was trying to pick the lock. Cosmina slid onto the hood of the car, let her mutation slip back into dormancy, crossed her legs, and cleared her throat.
“Excuse me. Is this your car?”
Her tone was sweet and her smile matched it. The would be car thief finally looked up. What sort of thief paid so little attention to their surroundings?
The car stood out on these streets. Where a Jaguar might not be out of place further into the city, here further out amongst the warehouses it stuck out like a sore thumb. Cosmina slowed the car as they approached a particular warehouse. It wasn't very far into the sprawl of buildings full of boxes. It was a standard looking place for a warehouse. Single floor, mostly gray metal with matching doors. Instead of parking in front of it she pulled around back to where a pair of large doors stood. She got out and yanked one of them open wide enough to admit the car and tarried in the doorway long enough to hit the light switch. Once that was done Cosmina returned to the vehicle and pull into the warehouse.
"Welcome to my garage, Effigy."
Cosmina turned to her passenger with a small smirk and turned off the vehicle. This area of the warehouse was exactly what you would expect. It was fairly barren. There was no decoration in this side of the warehouse or pretense of living space. Steel beams and metal walls were easily visible. There were no comforts here. The only thing out of place was a collection of alarm clocks on pedestals near the far wall. They were arranged in a square and served no readily apparent purpose. Not far from this was a door set in a wall that bisected the warehouse neatly.
She grabbed her tote out of the backseat and tucked it under her arm. After the excitement earlier it was lovely to be back home. Eleven years she'd operated out of this place. Like it or not this was home to her. It was merely a place to rest her head between missions but Cosmina would admit some attachment to it. Rummaging around in her tote for her keys she strode across the room to the door near the alarm clocks. With a twist of a key she unlocked the door and stood to one side for Effigy to enter. This was as much practicality as courtesy on her part. If he'd decided to betray her and try to take her portion of the loot from the store then it would be better to be behind him instead of the other way around. Cosmina didn't think that he would think to do that but you never knew.
The room beyond the door was furnished. White with accents of black and silver made up the color scheme of the very modern styled room. To the left was a living room area. A white sofa with sleek lines sat on a gray rug. Across from the sofa was a flat screen tv on a white and silver stand. Between the tv and the sofa was a glass top coffee table with black legs. To the right and against the far wall was the kitchen and dining area. This was mostly chrome and white. A small island, which constituted the dining area, had two tall stools pushed up against it. On the right-hand wall were two doors. Cosmina pointed to the one closest to the kitchen area.
"That's the bathroom. The other door is my bedroom." she paused and turned to Effigy again, "And that's the tour."
The tone of voice Cosmina used when she replied to his first statement was almost serious. The was only a hint of her playfulness left and her smile barely remained.
"I'm not asking you to like it." her smile returned moments later and her voice perked up, "Just don't get in my way!"
Cosmina kept an eye on the traffic and inspected Effigy at leisure. He was young and far too thin. However the suit he now wore looked excellent on him. With a little cleaning up and some regular meals he might be something worth looking at. She wondered what he'd look like after a few months of decent living. There was room at her warehouse for more than just her. He might be worth keeping around to see. His suggestion of getting a drink sounded good. It would be the perfect way to unwind after such a heist. They couldn't afford to stop in a bar though. If they did there was a chance they'd be caught.
No, they needed to go to ground. However that didn't mean that they couldn't have that drink. Cosmina kept a few things around her place for when she didn't feel like going out for a drink.
"Sounds like a plan. It wouldn't be a good idea to stop at a bar but I keep a few bottles at my place." Cosmina smirked somewhat as a thought dawned on her, "You know, you'll be the first guy I've ever brought back to my place."
Truth told he would be the first person she'd brought back to her place period, male or female. It was more fun to say it that way though. She'd spied a few seconds of the goofy grin she'd left on his face merely by kissing him on the cheek. He would be fun to toy with. It wasn't often she got to play with someone like that. Most of those she met were associates or targets. Most mercenaries weren't quite as naive and innocent as Effigy was. As for her targets, most of the time they ended up dead and of little use to her for flirtation.
Before she put the car in gear Mina reached over and patted Effigy's cheek with smile on her face, as usual.
"You're cute when you're annoyed."
She put the car in gear and pulled out into the traffic. Instead of pealing out at top speeds Cosmina kept to the speed limits. They didn't need to stand out like that right now. Blending in with the crowds would serve their purpose better. Glancing back over to her passenger Cosmina decided, for once, to explain her reasoning behind killing the officer. Right he was still fun so she felt inclined to offer him this bit of information. Not to mention it might be amusing to see his reaction.
"Subduing someone without using lethal force takes time, time that we didn't have. If I was going to get to my car and get back in time to pick you up it had to be done. Otherwise I would have had to take the time to find something to tie him up with, something to gag him with, and something to blindfold him with."
She hadn't included the gag in her original calculations but if she didn't want him calling for help then it would have been necessary. Cosmina chuckled a little under her breath. He was still young and naive. Sometimes people had to die. There was no point in holding back. Besides, they'd be back later. It wasn't as if people that died were gone for good. Cosmina never did understand why people seemed so upset about death. It wasn't a permanent condition or anything.
Daddy hadn't come back yet but that was ok. Cosmina would keep herself alive until he came back and found her. By then she would have a lot of money and she and daddy could live a good life! A glance in her rear view mirror told Cosmina that none of the police had followed them from the scene. That was good. That meant that they either hadn't figured it out yet or hadn't located them. Either was fine by Cosmina. The longer the police remained unaware of where the two of them were, or weren't,the better.
There were cops beyond the door after all. Cosmina could not hear them as they spoke. When she was silenced she could hear nothing. However she could see the lips of two of the three cops and that was enough. They spoke about a plan to infiltrate the store from the back entrance and take the kidnappers by surprise. It was good that she had acted as swiftly as she did. Otherwise they would have come busting in and everything would have been ruined. Moments after she began watching them through the cracked door the cops started. Possibly a large noise had distracted them. Cosmina was willing to bet that it was Effigy.
Two of the cops hesitated a moment before running down the alley way to go and reinforce their compatriots out front. That left only one cop and his gun was slack in his hand. Not only that but the commotion which she could not hear had his full attention. That would make it a simple matter. Slowly she crept up behind him. As soon as she was within grabbing distance she wrenched the gun from his hand. Remembering her accomplice's unwillingness to kill cops she debated for a few seconds on whether or not to shoot him. He turned as she thought and threw a punch at her. Cosmina easily dodged it.
She swiftly and fluidly threw a kick at his head. That knocked him to the ground. Cosmina took aim then and fired. A single bullet between the eyes. Effigy may not like the dead cop but it was either that or she took time that she didn't have to find a way to bind and blindfold him. This was swifter and more sure than any ropes could be. The gun she tossed into a dumpster and she ran down the alley. It took a minute to realize where she was. Her car was parked close. She ran down the street, having deactivated her mutation, and looked for all the world like just another hurried New Yorker. Her 2007 Jaguar XKR Convertible awaited her where she'd left it when she'd come shopping.
The car had been new when she'd bought it a few years ago. It had been her gift to herself for several jobs gone very very right. Now it would get her and Effigy far away from the crime scene before anyone realized what had truly happened. She hopped in and started the car. Not a minute or two later she was parked at the entrance of the alley, waiting for Effigy. Cosmina would leave if he took too long. Eventually someone would realize what was happening and if a cop came toward her in her car while she was waiting she'd drive off. She stashed her tote in the back seat and tried her best not to look as though she had anything but good intentions.
Cosmina gave a nod. That would have to do. He was willing to split up. He'd be the diversion while she brought the car closer. That was a little foolish. He didn't know her. She had no reason to come back for him. Those golems wouldn't keep the cops busy for long. It would be so easy to abscond with her share and leave him to take the fall. The only downside to that plan being that he would then have no reason not to tell the cops everything he could about her. It wasn't much but if the cops started looking for a brown haired woman who called herself Mute in the right places they'd learn things she didn't want them to know.
So in the end she would come back for him. It was better to leave people feeling well disposed towards you. Besides that, he could prove to be interesting. New people generally were. Once she knew everything there was to know about them then they got boring quick. If he got boring then she could just kill him. After all, he did know what she looked like and could associate her with the name Mute. It would be in his best interest to stay interesting then. Either that or find a way to make money for her. He expressed a desire not to kill cops. Pity that but she could work around it.
"Alright then. If it comes to killing cops I'll do it."
With a smile she leaned forward and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.
"I'll go get the back door open and bring the car around. You keep the cops busy as long as you can and then head for the back door."
With a playful wink Cosmina activated her mutation on herself and headed into the back of the store. It was a stock room with a safe. Pity she didn't have time to crack the safe. As it was she made straight for the back door and disengaged the locks. Thankfully they weren't electronic. A store this expensive really should have better locks. Cosmina silenced the door as well in preparation for opening it. If there were cops out there she would rather get the drop on them if she could.
Mina followed Meld out of the warehouse and onto the street. As she did she pondered the woman's words. 'Less well known' implied that Meld had a reputation of some kind. Cosmina had never heard of her though. Perhaps she only had a reputation in certain circles. If that were the case then Mina would have to make the effort to uncover said reputation. It could wait until after the mission was through. However if George was willing to risk her ire by calling in someone that she didn't know on a job and not telling her about it then two things were clear. One, George hadn't been sure how Cosmina would react to the person. Two, he hadn't thought that Cosmina's skills alone could get the job done.
Neither of those things were promising for her future working relationship with George. It also made her curious as to why George had thought that Meld would be a good partner. So far Mina had no objections. The woman handled herself well. Speaking of which, she watched as Meld touched the lock on a newer car with one hand. That hand had strange blue veins running through it and Cosmina could only surmise that it had to do with Meld's mutation.
The car unlocked at her touch and Cosmina went around to the passenger side as Meld did the same to the ignition. The care rumbled to life as Cosmina took her seat. She smirked a little and then let the smirk settle back into the well used smile that Cosmina wore.
"Useful."
It was a small comment but it served its purpose. It was best to keep her partner satisfied. An unhappy partner could lead to mid-mission betrayals. Those, while satisfying in so far as an killing urges went, were generally messy. Not to mention that if the betrayer managed to screw up the mission entirely Cosmina didn't get paid. Then Mina had to hunt them down and kill them for depriving her of her pay day. It was better not to have to waste time like that.
Natural blue hair? That was odd. That plus the sudden destruction of the glass pointed toward the blue haired woman being the mutant in question. Shortly afterward the woman got yet another drink. She already looked like she was drunk, more would only make that worse. It wasn't any of Cosmina's business though so she mostly ignored it in favor of watching the other people in the bar. A fight broke out at one of the pool tables and Cosmina's head swiveled so she could take the spectacle in before the two men were thrown out.
Before she could watch much more she was grabbed, kissed, and groped in one swift motion by the blue haired woman. Her reaction was a knee jerk reaction in a quite literal fashion. Moments after the blue haired woman's lips touched hers and her hand moved to someplace that it most definitely wasn't welcome Cosmina's knee came flying upward. Her fist flew next, directed at the woman's jaw. No one kissed Cosmina Anca Walker without permission.
Cosmina's bright smile was struggling to stay in place as her anger warred with the bright persona she kept up. She was furious. A bad person had touched her in a very bad way and had even kissed her! That wasn't nice. The bad blue haired lady deserved to be hurt for that! She barely managed to hang onto her mask of happiness. The smile she wore was strained and looked more like she was a vicious animal baring it's teeth than any true smile. Cosmina gained some distance from the blue haired woman, ripping herself away from the other woman and standing a few feet off.

Before Effigy could finish agreeing with her the sirens sounded. A few choice words echoed through Cosmina's mind though she uttered none of them. Before she had a chance to hide the police were outside the doors shouting for the mutants to come out. She was out of options. Thankfully Effigy was able to to fake a hostage situation and that gave Cosmina all the cover she'd need to figure out a way out. Her smile was gone in an instant, lest the cops see it. Now was the time for acting. Cosmina adopted a frightened look and posture as the lead officer told his men not to shoot.
"Please just let them go! Don't make them kill my brother!"
Cosmina's voice was full of fear and urgency. Her eyes were wet with tears. In short she looked the epitome of the frightened hostage. The act worked. The police revised their statement from one hostage to two.
"They'll kill him if you don't back off! Please!"
The lead cop didn't like it but he didn't see much choice. The police went outside and began setting up for what could possibly be a long hostage situation. As fast as she could Cosmina made her way back to where Effigy stood, playing the hostage.
"Here in a minute or two send your golems out front and have them attack the police. That should buy us enough time to get out the back door while the cops are distracted. My car isn't too far away. We can head to my place and lay low until the police forget about this whole thing."
Cosmina thought over the plan. As long as his range was enough to get the golems out front and have them attack long enough to draw the attention of the police then it should work.
"That is, if you've got the range for it."
She was back to smiling again, now that the cops weren't in immediate danger of seeing it. This sort of thing was where she was at home. Admittedly Cosmina preferred not to deal with the police at all. Usually she was far away before they even knew a crime had been committed. However she could work with this. The important thing was to get away. Chances were that there would be police guarding the back door. Hopefully Effigy's diversion would draw them away. If not then Cosmina would simply have to take them down.
He probably hadn't been expecting someone to stay. That she did stay would say something about her character to the insightful person. He returned her smile with one of his own and agreed to sharing the take. He took his share out of the register and left the rest on the counter for her. Cosmina counted it out and stashed her take. If he wasn't going to insist on a fairly counted even split then Cosmina wasn't going to either. She was getting the better end of the deal anyway.
He made his way over to a coat. Cosmina recalled him looking at it earlier when she'd been watching him. He introduced himself as Effigy while he slid the coat on. That elicited another smirk from Cosmina. He knew how this game worked. He wasn't a naive newcomer to his powers or a sheltered innocent then. Cosmina took a seat on the sales counter and swung her legs a little.
"Mute."
His mutation was obvious. There was no need to ask it yet. If their association continued past today she would inquire as to the specifics. As mutant sobriquets often had something to do with the power of their owners he ought to have some clue to her own ability. Mute was not a mutant name that left much doubt as to what it's possessor was capable of. It was often her talents unrelated to her mutation that caught people by surprise, not the mutation itself. Effigy presented himself in his new outfit for judgment. He even twirled on the spot. Cosmina giggled at him.
"It looks good on you."
It would be a good idea to leave the store soon. They didn't want to be caught here when the police arrived. With that in mind Cosmina hopped off of the counter.
"We should leave soon. It wouldn't be fun to have to deal with pesky cops."
It took a while. Cosmina was just about to give up yet again on the man doing anything interesting. Until she noticed the hands. Her eyes darted to the dressing rooms where the man stood, adjusting his tie and watching the arms rise out of the floor. He'd fool the humans. They were stupid and easily tricked most of the time because they never bothered to actually learn about mutants. They simply condemned them without studying them. It was stupid. If they were going to make an enemy of an entire race of humanity then they ought to be trying to find out everything they could about mutants.
Cosmina was unconcerned by the titans that were rising from the floor. She knew their maker and if they threatened her she could simply take him out. They were what Cosmina would term golems. They appeared to be composed of the marble of the floor. He'd been smart in their creation. They looked as though they could have been people. The marble creatures were tall. Cosmina would guess about nine to ten feet and the expressions he'd given them were fairly foreboding.
While others went about their shopping Cosmina turned to look at the man. She was no longer concerned over the creatures. She wanted to see the man's face. He turned, he smirked, and Cosmina laughed. She kept the laugh low, so as to not disturb what he was about to do. Instead, she set about removing the tags from the items she was carrying and folding them up. Once the shirts, skirt, and pants were folded she stowed them in the fashionable tote she had with her. If he was going to cause a ruckus then she was going to take advantage of it.
He performed marvelously. At the cry of mutants every head in the store save for Cosmina's whipped to the two marble monstrosities. The panic was immediate. Rich folks screamed, dropped their things, and ran. The sour faced sales associate fled with them. Cosmina decided to take further advantage of the situation. Several of the ladies had dropped their purses. Cosmina calmly went about collecting wallets from the purses and looting the money from them. Once she finished that Cosmina looked back at the man.
