The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Aura went on talking, which was a good sign. It gave Gemma more to work with once Alex was officially a student, and it was also good that Aura could put words to her thoughts and feelings and experiences. In a way, she counted as a student too, as much as a parent, and it was remarkable how she'd come out on the other side of something that would have destroyed most people. Even though Alex was the student, Gemma felt a responsibility to keep an eye on her too.
Gemma took a few notes about Alex's experiments with their powers. "It sounds like you did your best to handle this responsibly." she nodded. Kids experimented with a lot of things, and they could not be stopped by rules, so when they had powers like Alex's, it was best to make sure they did so safely. Both mothers had done so to the best of their knowledge.
Alex's powers were also not combat oriented, at least not by Gemma's judgment. But she soon realized she had been wrong in her assumption. Aura kept talking about how some people might take advantage of Alex. She was not upset or scared, just factual and pragmatic. No mutant child was entirely safe from fanatics on either side. Gemma took some more notes.
>>"I should mention Alex has seen a few dead bodies by my hand. Alex says their fine but im pretty sure they just don't wanna mention it to me. Kid or not i have to rescue any mutant I find in trouble. Either way i watched enough people to know everyone feels something at first even if their not the cuase"
Gemma nodded, not making any judgment, as she made some more notes. Then she looked up at Aura.
"I just want to say... it is impressive how mature you are about raising this kid. No parent is perfect, and that is not the whole point either. But, given your powers, and Alex's, and your upbringing... it feels like you managed to turn your experiences into something... safe, for Alex. And nurturing. That is incredible in itself. Never tell yourself otherwise."

Ez looked excited about the prospect of reading cards. Gemma chuckled as they settled on the bed, and Ez spread out a piece of cloth, shuffling a deck. She only had the most basic understanding of how tarot was supposed to work, but she was happy to watch and roll with it. One of the nice things about Ez was how honestly excited she got when she could share things that interested her. Be it muffins, or cards.
>>"Grand! So I'll shuffle up the deck and have you cut it or shuffle it however you like. We'll do a basic draw, and maybe we can get some glimpses into what the universe has in store for you,"
"Sounds like a plan." Gemma smiled. Who wouldn't be excited about getting a message from the universe? It would have come in handy more times than not. And living among mutants and adapteds, who was she to question something like that?
>>"Nothing to take too seriously; it isn't an exact science. But it might give you some things to keep in mind."
"Sure." Gemma nodded. She was not about to take any card reading very seriously, but she generally enjoyed people sharing their interests with her. After some consideration, she reached out to cut the deck carefully. As she touched the cards, she felt a strange, tingling sensation, that almost made her catch her breath. As an adapted, she'd never felt the effect of mutant powers before... and there was no reason, she reminded herself, that she should feel them now. It must have been her mind already playing tricks on her. Well, this was going to be interesting...

"Maybe I should bring rocks instead of muffins next time" Gemma chuckled. Diverse snacks were kind of her thing anyway.
>>"No, the cards are just a witch thing. Has anyone ever given you a tarot reading before?"
"No, not really" Gemma admitted with a smile. She knew what tarot was, or she had a general idea anyway; she'd seen it in movies and TV shows sometimes, where people pulled colorful cards from a deck to tell things about the future. She knew some shops around the city where people advertised such services, but being the practical woman she was, she'd never really been drawn to esoteric things. Then again, she'd never really met someone who ate crystals before, either.
>>"The cards are for divination. Some would say fortune telling. I think of it as a call for guidance or insight from the universe... It probably sounds silly, but the results can be interesting. Or at least amusing. So... any interest in what the universe has to offer you?"
Gemma considered the question for a moment. It was not really Ez's mutant power, which would not have worked in her aura anyway. She would have been desperate for anything like this a few weeks before, when Jorge was gone, for sure. Now, it just sounded like fun.

The room was cozy. Some people might have judged it for being too esoteric, or kitschy, but it was true to its owner's self, and that made all the difference. The crystals had meaning, and so did everything else in the room. Gemma felt happy that Ez allowed her to come and visit. One could understand so much about people by their living spaces.
>>"They have different textures, but I don't taste them much-- thankfully. The big thing is how they affect my moods,"
Gemma arched an eyebrow in question.
>>"It's one of the side-effects of my power; my body picks up the metaphysical traits associated with a crystal and it alters my mood and emotions. Peaceful, pensive, passionate; lots of options depending on the rock of the day."
"That's fascinating" Gemma noted. Another mutant power that scientists would have a field day figuring out - trustworthy scientists, that is. How many people took medication for the same reason, for all kinds of side effects?... And how did the crystals gain those powers in the first place?
"And the cards? Are those related to your power too?"

To call Aura's past 'troubled' would have been the understatement of the century. Many people at the Mansion were terrified of her, and not without good reason. Still, Gemma chose to believe that the young woman talking to her now was genuinely herself, and not the weapon people tried to turn her into.
>>"Kid might be better off hating and distancing from me"
Gemma wanted to tell her it was not true. Aura had problems, but there was no question that she loved Alex, and would never harm them. Still, Aura had not come here for counseling, and it would have been unprofessional to force her down that road. So Gemma let her talk as much as she wanted.
>>"Power wise we know Alex shifts gender when wounded but we have not pushed it past a few shifts. It's always been miner wounds though. We have been reluctant to see how the power might handle a bullet for example, we don't know if the bullet would be pushed out or regenerated around. The size of the wound does not seem to matter much."
"Yes, I understand this is... not an easy power to test." even with a healer on staff, who was going to try and shoot their own child? Or any child?...
>>"I mostly just let Alex order out most nights or fast food whatever they want. It lacks the extreme variation of my own former diet but it's well legal and less expensive for the zoo"
Gemma couldn't help but chuckle a little. She had heard rumors about Aura's diet, and she was glad Alex was used to more... conventional cuisine. Fats food was not great, but parents had done a lot worse to their kids than that. Alex would get used to home cooked meals soon enough. And if not, they could always order out...
>>"I Don't recall ever going to school, as those years were erased but i suppose the important thing is for Alex to carve their own path and not simply be a weapon to be wielded and discarded at will... Alison might of been better for this, truthfully i let Alex decide what they want to do mostly so long as it's not dangerous and so long as Alex obeys when i yell."
Gemma leaned over, looking Aura in the eyes, mother to mother.
"You are doing well enough." she stated with a nod "You are doing your best, and you have Alex's best interest at heart. No one can judge you for any of that. Don't compare yourself." she smiled a little "As for Alex... their powers are not really combat-oriented. That doesn't mean someone might not try to use them, all mutants have that risk... but Alex will be safe here, I promise. And the rest... they will learn. We are supposed to be a school, after all." she added with a smile.

It was not unusual for faculty to move into the Mansion, for lack of other options, for dedication, or for safety reasons. Gemma had prepared, with the approval of the school committee, an employment package for these cases, since the circumstances at a mutant school were... all but usual. This was the file she handed to Liz now. She knew it would come in handy sooner or later.
>>“It sounds pretty fair so far. Something of extra duties, but also additional compensation and further parameters to keep the duties from escalating too much... All in all, the job sounds very good. It feels like a challenge, but in a good way - I’m looking forward to helping out the kids in whatever way they need.”
"I am glad to hear that" Gemma nodded with a smile "Feel free to look that over in your free time, and let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Every employment situation is a little bit unique..."
>>“So where do we go from here? What are the next steps?... Uh, I mean, do you have other questions for me? Or need to ask me anything?... I apologize for getting ahead of myself."
Gemma chuckled as Liz realized she'd gotten carried away, and promptly apologized for it. Even without her powers, the young woman had a lot of empathy. "No need to apologize. I think we both know we are going to hire you, at least for a test period. Three months, usually, so you can make sure this is really the job you want, and we can figure out how to make it all work. Do you have a previous place of employment where you have to give notice? When were you thinking of moving in?"

Ez immediately grabbed a muffin, and Gemma chuckled as they settled in. The apartment was small enough that as long as she stayed at a comfortable distance, Ez would be within her field, enjoying the taste of actual food.
>>”This was a good plan, honestly. I get ravenous around you. And not in the naughty way. Your aura makes me immediately feel like I’m on an empty stomach. So thanks for the sugary offerings.”
"You're most welcome" Gemma smiled. The girl seemed to be having a good day, muffind and shiny things and all.
>>”Sure! I can even show you. There’s a ton of new crystals I got in today. Some are just to keep me fed and in the right moods, but I do get a few to decorate the room and improve the energy of my space. Obviously,”
"Obviously" Gemma chuckled, glancing around. The whole apartment was decorated with shiny things. It was a part of Ez's powers, but even beyond that, it was an aesthetic that was uniquely hers. A lot of internet life was aesthetic, from what Gemma could tell.
>>”You don’t see all of them on the stream. I’m a bit addicted.”
"They are beautiful" Gemma noted, marveling at the shapes and colors of the crystals. Some the girl would eat, because of her powers. It was strange to think about. "So... do they taste different?"

Ez looked happy and bubbly as she opened the door, not even missing a beat as she entered her aura. She knew about it by now, but even veteran Mansion residents winced sometimes when their powers suddenly shut down. It must have been the muffin smell.
>>”Gemma! It’s great to see you again. And—wait, I smell… Muffins! I hope you’re cool with hanging out a while, because I want to demolish those.”
"That's the plan" she smiled as she was ushered inside the small apartment. She set the basket on the kitchen table. Ez was welcome to eat as much as she wanted, as long as Gemma stayed around. It might have been a bit awkward to be all like 'I'm gonna stay here until you digest' - but normal was rare between mutants and adapteds.
>>”Amazing things keep showing up at my doorstep today. New crystals, pretty new cards, a kind friend. And muffins. The goddess is so kind. Please, come in!”
"Sounds like a good day" Gemma noted with a chuckle. Ez was in her element when she was excited like this. "Do you want to tell me about those new treasures?"

>> "You will also be happy to know, I no longer eat random animals off the streets or run out into traffic. I even stopped picking fights with random gangs. "
"Good to know" Gemma chuckled. As light as the joke was, it was an important point in one's own development to be able to joke about topics like that, things they had formerly done, and not be ashamed anymore. Aura had definitely grown, not just as a woman but also as a person. She was willing to talk, in fact wanted to have conversations and perspective. She did not have a strong support system of peers, and she was not exactly among the Mansion alumni... And she was in need of support, as a new and slightly terrified mother.
>>"We always had feared for Alex safety, it's why if lost and unable to contact us she was to come here. We feared the houses might be targeted at some point and well i will not deny we figured Alex's connection with Mirror might help"
"They seemed to be getting along well" Gemma nodded with a small smile. She knew some of the long history around Baby X, and the last time they'd show up at the Mansion, Becca and Mirror handled the whole thing admirably well. Plus Mirror had first hand experience with gender shifting.
>>"What if the child hates me for what i have done? Or worse wants to emulate my actions? I had always thought i was making a better world, but now their is Super. I can't help but think this world adopted that afoul place becuse of demons like myself. I barely leave Alex's side of fear they might try and take her if nothing else then to target me."
There was not much for Gemma to say to make the young woman feel better. She had the fears of every parent, and in a world that was definitely out to get mutants more often than not. "I won't tell you none of those fears are possible" she promised, setting her cup down "But I can tell you we have dealt with attacks often, and we have a pretty good grasp on how to keep our students safe."
>>"What do you need for the child to have entry? I will provide whatever is needed."
"Paperwork, most of all" Gemma shuffled, picking out some forms "We'll need to know as much about their powers as possible, as well as their general needs, in terms of food, daily routine, that kind of stuff. Also, things you hope they would gain at this school. It's... kind of flexible."

If they had another faculty on site, someone who knew the Mansion well, and had a good relationship with the students, it would definitely be a plus, Gemma knew that. Xavier's had a tendency to have the unexpected happen with alarming regularity, and every time it did, be it de-aged teachers, guinea pig invasion, or burning angels, having one more adults on deck could prove invaluable. And Liz had lived here before. She knew what she was signing up for.
"We have some faculty rooms available" she nodded, shuffling around in her desk drawer "And a separate employment package for faculty that wants to live in the Mansion. It includes food, for example... And you are right, the more competent adults we have around all the time the better." she finally fished out the relevant folder and handed it to Liz "However, I want to warn you, we also have some policies for scheduling your availability. We don't want any of our faculty to burn themselves out, even with the best of intentions..."

Gemma was breathing more easily this time around. Jorge was back to his old self... in both senses of the world. They would be managing the aftereffects of the de-aging for a long time to come, but Gemma had her husband back, and things, for now, were looking a little brighter. Clearly, it was only a matter of time before another surprise ruined the calm, so she was intent on making the most of it.
And that did not just include family. It also included friends. Or would-be friends. As unlikely as the school counselor's friendship was with the cam girl named Esmeralda, spending time together had been entertaining. And Ez was an intelligent and empathetic person. One of Gemma's main rules in life was that one did only reach out to friends when one was in need of support. Spending time with them when things were good was even more important.
And things were good now, for a moment. And Gemma reached out. And Ez responded with an invitation of her own - come over and chat. It was strange to visit the girl in her own home (one Gemma assumed she had caught glimpses of on camera). But there was no reason it had to be awkward. Carrying a small basket of muffins as a guest gift, Gemma walked up to the building indicated, and rang the doorbell.
Hopefully, this would be a nice, friendly afternoon. Nothing major to deal with.

Gemma gave Liz a moment to absorb the news. If she didn't know how serious the de-aging wave had been, it was probably a shock to her.
>>"My word... I hadn’t realized… That certainly makes things more complicated.”
Gemma nodded, keeping her own feelings to herself. Complicated was one way of putting it. Being married to a man who didn't remember her and hurting his feelings in the process while raising the twins alone was another way to describe it. But this interview was not about her.
>>“It seems the students are going to need as many role models as possible then, especially since so many….aren’t what they used to be. Or will be. I imagine any adults who now find themselves school-aged will still need to make up their education, even if they still technically have degrees. Classes might be a bit tricky if students re-age to their older selves, but as long as they regain their memories there wouldn’t be a problem, right?”
"This is how we are operating now, yes" Gemma nodded again. "Anyone school aged who stays here gets to go to class like they... used to. It sets a schedule and some smaller goals for them."
If they did the subjects twice, and remembered later... there was really not much downside to that.
>>“It seems academically speaking, not too much will be affected, regarding classroom procedures and such. But correct me if I’m wrong. The larger challenges will be the social aspects of de-aged students, since this will naturally disrupt prior relationships.”
Oh, it did.
"It does. Especially because some students de-aged to a point before they had arrived at Xavier's. Some of them are... wilder than when we knew them."
>>"Is on-campus lodging still an option for teachers? I imagine that would go a long way to supporting the children even outside of the classroom.”
"Yes, that is still an option. Are you thinking of moving back in?"

Gemma made coffee for Aura, and wondered if her own adapted field bothered the younger woman. She knew that with the background Aura had, she was probably attached to her powers, even if she could physically handle being without them. So she offered, ready to make accommodations like she always did.
>>"It's all right, old friend. The offer is very kind but old age has taught me much, as has Alex. I have always trusted you, and i have been learning to be less overt with my powers. I know i am safe here, with or without my powers. Besides the more i learn to feel ok without my aura, the safer Alex will be."
Gemma couldn't help but look surprised. The whole demeanor of the younger woman had changed. Sure, she had grown a lot since they last met, and she was a mother now, bringing a child to school. Motherhood often changed people. Still, hearing her talk like that, one friendly adult to another, spoke of huge personal progress in the one-time wild child soldier. "That is a good way of looking at it."
>>"I am the last person who should be raising a child, my friend. I am not the safest person to be around. Heck i was 3 years older then Alex when i was taught to charge men holding automatic weapons. I was suppose to watch Alex for two weeks while Alison was away......that was near two months ago. It's why i was at the baby shower and not Alison. Alison was devoted to Alex and i fear the worst but i have told Alex she is on a work assignment."
The aura flickered, signaling emotions. Polite manners and honest words or not, Aura still had a part, and it was still haunting her on some level. She'd stepped up to being a parent, especially in the absence of Alison, and so far she had been doing a good job of it. But it was a battle of a different kind. Gemma nodded in understanding. "That must be hard for you. It would be hard for anyone."
>>"it is strange. I have been in war, more battles then i can count and nearly been killed on multiple occasions and yet that child being hurt brings fear to me like i have never known. Alex deserves the chance to a better person then i was or can be... Sorry i have told no one else and you seemed like the right person to unload that to"
"It's alright" Gemma smiled "I am here to talk when you need. And don't be too hard on yourself. Parenthood, even under the best circumstances, has a habit of showing us fear like we've never felt before. Comes with the territory..."

Some registration appointments were definitely more exciting than others.
Gemma had been notified that the student registering this afternoon was none other than the kid formerly known as Baby X, the notorious little gender-shifter that caused so many headaches to Mirror and some curious gossips to spread through the Mansion. Not to mention Alex was being accompanied by one of their moms, Aura, who had recently visited for the Grey-Morris baby shower. Gemma knew things about Aura, but most of those things were from a long time ago. The young woman who walked through her door now could have been any other new mom, visiting a school. If she didn't know any better.
>>"I'm here on registering Alex, Allison..could not make it. Not sure if kid's normally come to these, I let Alex loose to play their are things that need not reach their ears"
"We will talk to them later. Come on in" Gemma smiled, allowing Aura to walk in and take a seat. "Tea? Coffee?"
Once hot beverages were arranged, Gemma took a seat too, smiling at the young woman with a hint more curiosity than usual. "Does my aura bother you? I can sit back if it does."

Gemma noted the blush on Liz's face as they talked about alumni teachers being role models to the net generation. It was something that came with a lot of responsibility, but also something that made one feel great about their place in the world. Liz did not seem like a person who would place that above all other parts of her work, but the blush was a good sign that she was aware of it.
“Exactly. I had several friends here that seemed resigned to always having the short end of the stick. Too many felt that they couldn’t amount to much because their mutation kept causing trouble or made them a target for much worse.”
"That is not uncommon among students of any disadvantaged background" Gemma nodded, sipping her tea. Mere survival could only take one so far. Liz has gone beyond that and returned to give back. She would know.
“I also think it’s important for students to see examples of other ways to have normal livelihoods that don’t revolve around criminal justice or peacekeeping. Every student is so unique and not just because of their genetics. I want to help them find their own place in the world, not just accept pre-established roles or settle for what others choose for them.”
Gemma chuckled. She wondered what one of the X-men would say if they heard Liz's words. Because she was right. Many teens came to the Mansion with so much resentment, the vigilante route was an obvious choice for them before they even considered any other. Even though, mutations aside, they had a whole lot of other skills no one ever bothered to cultivate. Gemma, being an adapted, saw more of those than others. "You are right about that one."
Now she just had to ask if Liz would be able to handle her own personal development and her teaching work together.
“There won’t be any conflicts with any teaching duties or anything like that. Nothing dangerous either, like dealing with the mob or whatever. No, there are just some old friends and acquaintances I lost track of after I left and...I just want to reconnect with them. Bit of a reunion kind of thing.”
Gemma nodded. Personal things. Who didn't have lost and found relationships like that in their past? She seemed like a capable young woman, not someone who would bring much drama to the Mansion's door.
“And on the note of reconnecting... I understand that there’s been a swath of...what is it....de-aging that’s impacted a number of mutants in the community? Has that impacted the school much?”
Gemma winced. It was still a delicate subject with her, given that Jorge still lived as a young man, even though the truth came out between them. She bit her lips, looking away for a moment before she got a handle on her emotions.
"Yes. The Mansion has been affected. Some faculty, some returning students... Some have re-aged since, but others are... showing no sign of it. I try to keep track, but... I can't guarantee everyone is as you have last seen them. Or rather, maybe exactly the same..."
