The hardest part of Gemma's job had always been watching kids struggle with the fact that the world was unfair and hostile to them. Out of no fault of their own.

"You call us. You call the school, or me. Or the X-men. We'll come and help, whatever happens. Whether it is your fault or not."
He needed to hear that. The police was not prepared to deal with someone like Rowan. But the school was.

"No need to feel embarrassed about that. Grown adults panic too when they become a police suspect, trust me." Gemma said gently. "Ms. Sundance knows what you are going through with your powers, and so do I. And despite all this... you are doing great. It is hard work, so it is completely normal to feel anxious, or tired, or anything else you are feeling. I just wanted to make sure you can vent if you need to."

Gemma did not really want to think about what would have happened if Rowan had met the police alone. It was a good thing Liz handled it. The idea of what could have happened seemed to trigger something in Rowan too, because he took some breath to calm himself down. Gemma fought the instinct to use her aura to help. He had to learn, or ask for help on his own.

"It's a good thing she was, then." Gemma nodded. She would point it out later that Liz was only a part of achieving that.

Gemma frowned. She would have loved to tell Rowan he was wrong, but that was not outside the realm of possibility. And being profiled by the police was something she had seen before.
"I am sorry you had to deal with that." she said honestly "It is hard to be accused of something you didn't do, just because people assume things about you. No one deserves that. And we need to do a better job of keeping you safe here." she was not above giving a piece of her mind to the cops, but she doubted it would help. "How are you feeling?"

Gemma wondered how the police got to Rowan at all. Mansion students should have been protected from all that up front.

Gemma nodded, making a mental note to talk to Sam. He was not on the wrong track with the cute nickname, but the more she knew about Rowan's mutation the more she thought it was deeply ingrained with his mental state.
>>"The cops also said they found my DNA on one of the...bodies...and that they had my DNA because of an...incident at my previous school... But cops are mean, so I think they were lying...like they were hoping to scare me into confessing something...and they did scare me...a lot...but I know I didn't do anything..."
"It's okay, Rowan. You didn't do anything wrong." she told him. A scared kid could not be blamed for how the police treated him. She knew she might need to bring Jorge into this if they did not figure it out soon. "And they should not have talked to you without an adult present. I'll make sure they know that. Do you have... and idea why they would want you to confess something you didn't do?"

Rowan was struggling to get the words out. Gemma had learned to give him time. He needed to find the things he had to say, and hurrying him or talking for him was not going to do anyone any good.

Gemma nodded.
"But you didn't." if he had, that would have been a whole different conversation. And the last thing he needed from her right now was doubt. "Why did the police think you did it?... How did they find you?"

"Sure" Gemma nodded, motioning at the chair he usually took when he wanted to sit outside her aura. She pushed her chair back a bit too, and now they were far enough apart, but also not too far to make talking uncomfortable. Gemma's office was set up that was for a reason.

Gemma knew Rowan had had a run-in with the police. She knew as much as she was allowed to know, but since Liz was handling the aftermath, she decided to wait. Wait until Rowan decided to reach out. He had been to her office a couple of times now, and they were getting along fairly okay. Gemma knew she could trust Rowan to reach out if he needed her help. For a little longer, anyway. She was still relieved when the made an appointment.
"Come on in!" she called out as she heard the knock. She was sitting behind her desk, far enough from the door. "Hello Rowan. Do you want to be outside the aura today, or inside?"
Rowan often used her aura to write tests, or just spend some quiet time free of his mutation. But Gemma knew it took a toll once he left after, so it became a habit between the two of them to offer him the choice.

Sometimes, teenagers who had been through a lot were still teenagers. Rowan was also entitled to being grumpy sometimes. Gemma knew that this session had already been a lot on him for a first meeting, especially since it was not supposed to be a session at all.
"I... don't think I phrased that correctly" she admitted with a small smile "I'm not talking about counseling. I mean, you can visit me any time you want to, but talking to me is not really gonna do any good on its own. For now, I'm just talking about practical things. Like... what kind of food you'd like us to stock in the kitchen. Believe me, we have a pretty flexible budget for food."

"All of those things could be true at the same time" Gemma nodded. "It sounds like maybe your shifted form is tied to your emotions, and emotions are complex things. People struggle with them under the best circumstances."
It was no reason to pretend they didn't. Or that she didn't. Gemma was still coming back from the experience of Jorge de-aging for several months. She knew how to deal with it, but she still had to do the work. And that was nowhere near as complicated as a kid with a tough background with a dangerous mutation.
"So... this is something I can help you with a little. The safer, and more comfortable you feel, the more it is going to affect your powers as well, I think. I'll have to work with Sam on this, but in the meantime, making you feel more at home can't be wrong, right? she gave Rowan a smile.

Gemma waited patiently as Rowan stumbled through the words. It was probably not easy to put words to his feelings, or explain what it felt like to turn into what he thought of as a monster.

"It's okay. What you are saying makes sense, in a way." Gemma nodded "I am thinking, maybe your... shifted form, it's a defense mechanism. It's trying to protect you when you feel threatened. Now, it's not really going about it in a good way... But it is not born from cruelty. That's an important difference. What do you think?"

Gemma could feel the tension as Rowan snapped at her, and then see it in his face as he instantly regretted it. It was normal. Everyone talking about his powers did not mean that he ever got to talk about them too, especially in the way he needed. She waited for him to decide if he'd go on.
>>"I...uh...shift? I shift into an awful, mean, wolf...thing. And it makes me violent and angry."
Gemma nodded, making some mental notes. Choice of words was important, she would have to remember that. But this was the time to listen, not respond.
>>"I've shifted three times. And once was the other day during my Danger Room session. I only shift when...I'm really scared...I guess..."
"I see" she nodded. Protective mutations usually manifested that way. This kid turned into a big bad wolf when he was scared. That was probably not a coincidence. "So, all the other times you shifted... you were scared of something?"

They made their way to the roof on the fire escape. Gemma was not used to doing things like this anymore. She did not dare look down as they climbed.

So, the deck kept telling them that things were being mysterious. Big help. There was a reason Gemma found esoteric things somewhat hazy...

There was someone else on the roof. Someone in red. Gemma's brow furrowed. She had dealt with cults before, both pro- and anti-mutant, and she was not going to trust some conjured up red-dressed priestess right off the bat. Neither did Ez, apparently, because she stepped away, and conjured up flames.

Maybe this woman was a mutant. Maybe her powers somehow found a way around adapted auras. It was still a more likely explanation than magic...

A kid did not have to have an actual mutation to talk about themselves like that. Gemma heard things like that over and over again. Bad, scary, worthless. The world reflected a distorted image at many young people, and they had no choice but to believe it. And when the mutant powers line up with that... it was a tough hand to be dealt. Gemma waited for him to talk more.

"It does suck." Gemma noted gently. It did suck. "And you might be back further than you were, but it's not square one. Because now you know things about your powers that you did not know before. ANd you have us to help you." she added with a smile. "But still, we can agree that many things probably suck right now. Would you... like to tell me a little more about your powers?"

Gemma nodded, sitting back. This was the time to let the boy talk. Dealing with emerging mutations was always difficult at first, tand talking about it was even harder.

Gemma nodded again. Some mutations manifested more intensely than others. But someone who did not know how mutants actually worked could find other explanations more believable. Even if they were worse.

"Some things can be both band and good" Gemma noted gently "It is a good thing you are here know. And figure out how your powers work, exactly." she paused "Some people will tell you to look on the bright side and focus on the positive. Which is important. But none of that works if you don't also allow yourself to talk... or think... about everything else that goes with it."

Gemma headed back to the office for her phone. She doubted Sam would answer a call from her, but she could always call another X-member and try to reach him through the comms.

"There you go, that is a lead" Gemma noted, glancing at Evelyn "So, he went with multiple girls." God help us. "I'm going to assume they are around his age, and he knows at least some of them. Does that narrow it down?"

Gemma nodded and listened. Most people did not like to talk about the times when their mutations slipped, even if they got away relatively safely. Rowan didn't. His powers were potentially dangerous, and he, like almost everyone like him at first, thought that firm suppression was the only way to deal with his abilities. Sam would have some hard work ahead of him, teaching a different way.
>>"Oh yeah...I was just here for a schedule...you've probably got other meetings."
"Not for a while, no. And you haven't finished your hot chocolate yet." she noted with a small smile. "I'm also here to just talk. Or listen. I might not be good for power training, but you can always just tell me about it..."
