The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Drake appreciated something, alright. He appreciated professionalism. Professionalism was not throwing up on the job. Miss Gage was doing a better job of that now than she had earlier, and she was getting the truth. As close to the truth as he suspected one could get using a mutant power. Because Gage was a mutant. He'd dealt with enough to catch the signs. Nobody was that good at picking lie from truth on the spot, short of Sherlock Holmes.
Ashton had never really liked Holmes. He was more of a Sam Spade guy. The Continental Operator. Maybe even Marlowe. He preferred the style. One thing usually led to another. Gage's useful power led them to new lines of investigation. They could follow that.
A Porche. He noted that as he walked through lawn.
A possible suspect? The client he was working for. Maybe.
A strange smell? Suspicious. Possibly, related to whatever had caused the programmer's situation... or the situation itself. Ick.
Ashton grunted in agreement. Maybe.
>>"Did you ever hear about the evolutional fiasco at the gradeschool uptown?"
Double Ick. "Yeah." Ashton replied succinctly, not sounding interested in discussing that. Melted gradeschoolers. Unpleasant. "I think we should go interview people at the programmer's work, get more information on this 'client' he had. There might be something there." He changed the subject.

This operation was going downhill, fast, but one thing was clear to him. Ashton had seen the flags. That was the kind of cartoon tripe kids dreamed up. Which meant... this might not have been such a marvel of modern technology after all.
Someone else reached that same conclusion just as he did. "Pilot, huh." His eyes narrowed on the machine's head. "This thing's probably a psychic manifestation of some kid's wildest dreams," Ashton announced. A hand went to his chin, and ran through stubble there. Yeah. That sounded about right. People would be surprised how often insane mental leaps like that were perfectly logical once you'd spent a few months working for MRC. This sort of thing wasn't common, per se, but psychics were psychics. They all had their own little card to play. And not all the cards were drawn from the same deck.
"Shinbo, can you fly up there? Pull yourself together."

>>"Are you sure? You're welcome to come up to wait if you like."
"I'm fine," Ashton smiled, and left her to her preparations.
A short while later, she returned.
She asked him what he thought.
Ashton slipped the bookmark in place and closed his book. "You look amazing," He complimented her. He tossed the book back into the glove compartment, then started the car. The Taurus pulled out of the parking spot, rejoining traffic. It didn't take long to find the restaurant he was looking for. Once again, Ashton parked it, got out, and opened Shula's door. He led her into the restaurant, and got them a table. A short while later, they were seated.
The restaurant was nice, and the table well-situated. It was private, non-smoking. The hostess and the waitresses were all well-dressed. Not too high-cost, but classy. Ashton opened his menu and looked things over. "The seafood pasta salad with roasted peppers sounds good," He commented. "Or maybe the Cajun variation? What are you considering?" He looked to Shula.

Ashton smiled at the woman as she fled. "It's a date."
Yes, the movies always were a good place to find interesting people, whether it was on-screen or in-seat. Ashton sat for a while with his popcorn, considering things. Yup. Definitely worth the price of admission. Once he was ready, he rose.
He'd see her next week. Maybe then, he'd catch mystery woman's name.

He took note of the location.
Classy. Upscale area.
Shula got in, and he followed, buckling himself into the driver's seat. They pulled out of the garage, and onto a New York street. Ashton navigated smoothly through traffic. He made smalltalk as they went.
"So. What do you do for a living?" That sort of thing. Not too probing, but generally interested. Women liked it when thoughtful men were interested in them, didn't they? Yeah.
They reached the address a short while later. Ashton parked near the building, and looked to Shula. Now, it was her turn to get ready. "I'll wait," He said.
Hopefully, she wouldn't take too long. He did have a CD player for these such occasions, thankfully. And a paperback in the glove box. Like a boy scout, he was prepared.

"Mhm," He agreed with her. Most often times, the movie simply couldn't live up to the personal expectations of book-lovers. It could be good, but everyone had their own idea of what made it great. She got that, too. She really did.
He nodded slightly as she finished.
"Everyone's a critic." Someone behind them coughed. Ashton cleared his throat and accentuated his prior statement. "Everyone..."

"Alright," Ashton said. He got the mugger to his feet and led them all to the car.
Five-o-clock came around. Business done, Ashton led Shula to his real car. "Give you a ride home," He offered. "Or wherever it is you wanted to go for your evening wear." He held the door open for her politely.
The car was Tuxedo Black, a 2011 Ford Taurus Sedan. It was nice. Brand new. Ashton liked the thing. He looked good in black.
Speaking of black...
He'd changed out of what he'd been wearing before, and into something far more suitable. He'd had it in his locker. How convenient. Now, he was wearing a black suit jacket with matching slacks, white-collared shirt, and a tie.

She got close. Real close.
>>"Make sure you use those, Detective. Don't disappoint me."
Ashton smirked. Today was turning out to be an okay day.
She asked if there were any other formalities. Ashton nodded an affirmative. "I take it you're pressing charges on your mugger? You'll need to come down to the station and file a report. Now or later. My squad car is parked nearby," he said. "We could get the report out of the way now. I get off at 5." That wasn't too long from what time it was currently. By the time they'd finished dealing with that report... "What do you think about Italian?"

"Exactly," Ashton stole her earlier line, confident smile on his face. "I thought the same about Watchmen when it first came out. It was entertaining. Might not have been as good as the original, but," He laughed. "That's the original. Sure, they have to change things to make it fit, to get butts in seats. Confusing elements get edited or left by the wayside. It might not be exactly as epic as the original source material, might not be the same grade of masterpiece, but hey. It can be good in its own ways. It can sure as hell be entertaining. And that's it, really? Why one goes to movies? It isn't always to be emotionally moved. Sometimes, it's just to kill time. And hey, that's entertainment." He looked her way, tried to meet her eyes in the dark, grin on his face. "Whether it's Godzilla smashing Tokyo, the blob eating entire families, or some Comedian laughing his last laugh."

>>"A keen observation officer. Thank you for your help."
Ashton nodded slightly, then glanced back over his shoulder at the mugger when she made her comment. He didn't say anything, only smiled smugly. Her comment had been enough. The mugger stopped struggling, ego crushed.
He turned his focus back to better people. The woman reached into her purse for something. Ashton watched curiously. Something small, a piece of paper? She held out her hand to him and introduced herself. He met the handshake-paper-pass confidently. "Detective Ashton Drake. Glad to be of service."

She uttered excuses to put any John Wayne fan at ease.
Excuses, excuses.
"Hey, as long as he's John Wayne and good at what he does, I don't worry too much about who he's playing," Ashton laughed a manly laugh. John Wayne was John Wayne and an excuse was an excuse. They'd already made a 'As Time Goes By' reference in this conversation, so he let a spade be a spade, and left it alone. It was what it was. A good actor by any other name would act as well. Clint Eastwood was pretty good. Dirty Harry, The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. He had his movies.
Ashton smirked at her response. Snorting. Funny. What a becoming non-laugh. He shook his head. "I like a popcorn movie just as much as the next. Wanna know a secret?" He waited long enough for a response, then let it loose in a whisper only they could hear. "Truth be told, I watch the occasional B movie now and then. They're just so bad sometimes. It's terrible." He shook his head with a light laugh. "And terribly entertaining."

Never better? Obviously not. She had a weak stomach. This wasn't the sort of thing she dealt with often. No wonder she'd needed a break from it, and to get away from the victim. Ashton gave her the slightest of nods and a small grunt of acknowledgment. He eyed her curiously through darkened lenses. Just what was her specialty, then?
She seemed to predict that question, and gave him an answer. The Truth. For a second, his mind flashed to some show he'd caught the opening minutes of while channel-flipping a couple of times. X-something-or-other. The truth was out there.
"Right," Drake replied quietly. He watched her for a second, then followed after her.
