The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>>”Surprise them with a flight?... Maybe, thought you kinda deserved it though. If ya call me anything call me Carrick… please.”
Amethyst was really not in a position to argue. She knew that the gorgon probably took offense at her calling him such, even though he had not even known the term a few minutes earlier. But he did ask nicely, not in a brutish way. "Carrick it is."
>>”You’re sparkling, love.”
Amethyst blushed. That had to be the opals; a human would have been perspiring too, from the sudden excitement of being swept up into the sky. Carrick was looking at her with bird-like curiosity up close, and purred, which was a... strange sensation, while she was being held to his chest. "Yes, it... happens."
He landed and let go of her; Amethyst made sure she found her feet before she let go. The last thing she needed was to land on her ass in front of this smug guy.
>>”Right. Congrats, ya survived you’re first flight. Next time you might be able to keep yer eyes open.”
"If there is a next time" she pointed out, folding her arms. She did not see a chance of one in the near future. An opal slid down her neck and disappeared in her cleavage; she unfolded her arms and the small gem followed the path of gravity, landing at her feet.
Funny thing, Amethyst didn't like heights at all, not in a free-flying way, but even more so she hated the idea of being in the power of a gorgon, someone who had reason to hate Atlantean royalty and clearly was tempted to drop her to her death. What would that be like? Would her shade have to watch from the other side as Americans argued over an Atlantean princess being murdered by a gorgon?... It just felt embarrassing.
>>”Wouldn’t dream of it. Wouldn’t be any use to me. Be more trouble than I need. Love, just ‘avin a gas.”
He was having fun. She wasn't, but at least he sounded genuine, like he did not want her to freak out. They flew lower now, which reassured her that she was not going to be dropped. Still she kept her eyes closed, and a firm hold on his back.
>>”Sorry, love. Usually get a different reaction, should have known royalty didn’t have the stomach for it.”
Amethyst scoffed, against her better judgment. Not enough that he was holding her very close, now he was also making fun of royalty. This had nothing to do with her lineage.
>>”I can bring ya down if ya want, gently I might add. Haven’t lost a passenger yet.”
"You do this to everyone?" she frowned, peering over his shoulder. His wings were holding them both up, and had Amethyst not been this uncomfortable, she would have marveled at their strength. If they were impressive when on the ground, they were definitely amazing now. "You should really ask first." She could feel small drops of opal sliding down her back from the anxiety, and a thin sheen of opal powder coloring her cheeks and neck. She didn't like the feeling.
>>”Poor choice of words, love. Might ya want to rephrase or choose some new words entirely?”
"Don't you DARE drop me!" Amethyst clarified, digging her fingers into the back of his shirt. You could never trust a gorgon completely, not one with such a clear animal side. She glanced down and then screwed her eyes shut, and resisted the urge to try to wrap her legs around him too. She wanted to die with a shred of dignity left.
>>”Relax princess, I don’t plan on dropping ya yet. Haven’t called me gorgon enough times for that.”
So, he did know what a gorgon was. Go figure. The stopped rising and started gliding, strong wings stretching out on both sides.
>>”Not even royalty get views like this. Soak it in while yer on me good side.”
Amethyst was still holding on for dear life. If she looked, she might have seen the sheer drop between her and the ground, and that was a view she did not want to soak in in any form. "Why are you doing this?" she snapped, although her voice was a little shaky to have the full effect.
So, pets in America sounded like a whole lot of work and not much gain. Amethyst was definitely not cleaning up after anything anytime soon. And if he was not going to play nice and look majestic, he was really no use as a royal pet.
>>”Not a fan of leashes and I can’t promise I won’t take a **** on the palace floors.”
Amethyst wrinkled her nose. She didn't believe he meant that literally, but with gorgons, who knew? Some of them had no manners at all. Definitely not pet material.
>>”Been said before I have a tendency to cause trouble anyways. For example.”
She opened her mouth to respond... but suddenly he had her scooped up and shooting high into the air. His wings beat strongly as they lifted both of them in the air. This was a very different experience from flying on a plane. Amethyst shrieked in surprised, surrounded by swooshing air and feathers. "What the... no! What in the gods name... PUT ME DOWN!" The ground was far beneath them now, and Amethyst realized her demands were not... ideal. On instinct, she grabbed on to Carrick, winding her arms around his shoulder. He might be a horrible creature but she was not going to let him drop her.
Princess Amethyst was realizing she was not a fan of flying free.
>>”Only if ya buy me a drink first, love. Don’t think it have the same effect your thinking.”
Amethyst shrugged. She was not about to actually scratch him. She barely scratched royal pets, only if she felt like it, and they were not half as cheeky as this guy. She was not used to the idea of gorgons with this much confidence to go around. The wings explained a lot, though. She watched them move and flex as he talked, noting the deep purr in his chest.
>>”Me? A Royal pet? Oh, wish me mother could see me now. Imagine it’s a good gig. Food room n bored? Can’t say we like the idea of a collar or a leash though. What’s the pay?”
"Do Americans pay their pets?" she asked, arching an eyebrow "We don't. They are just grateful they can be at our side. And they only get leashed if they cause trouble." she clarified with a smirk. Most pet gorgons were thoroughly trained.
When it came to what gorgons did day to day, the princess' knowledge was kind of hazy. She never cared much, and most of them lived out of sight, so she never bothered to learn what their mutations meant for their lifestyle. Did this guy nest, for example? He might as well. Gryphons nested, to the best of her memory. It wasn't an insult if it was true.
>>”Nest on the roof? What am I simple sparrow? Love, we nest where we want when we want. If nothing else changed here I got a few trees out back that were pretty great if I’m not feeling the room thing.”
Leave it to him to say no then say yes to her question. Amethyst rolled her eyes. Not a simple bird, sure, but he did have... trees. Well, at least he was not shedding his feathers and fur all over the school. Even better.
>>”Nah, I prefer a roof over me head. When I’m like this. The other two don’t mind rain as much. Winter not so much.”
Or not. Again, with the 'other' thing. Did he have a twin or something? At this point, Amethyst was not going to ask, out of pure defiance. He had bragged enough as is. He spread his wings with obvious pride in his face. She quietly had to admit it was impressive up close. Wings that could carry a grown man had to be large.
>>”So what’s selling it for you then? Ever fly before? You can touch them if you want.”
"Should I also scratch you behind the ear?" she shot back with a smirk, but stepped closer anyway. "I used to have hawks, back in Atlantis. They were good for sport. None were this big though. You'd make a good royal pet."
>>"Please. Ain't a wizard around that can give me anything I can't get with tenacity and BDE and I've got plenty of both. Oh, sweety, trust me, you don't want to know the kinds of wizards America has."
So, America had wizards. Good to know. Sounded like an unsavory lot, but at least Amethyst was familiar with the concept of people wielding magic from stories. She could not say the same about all the other random jumble of words they were talking about, like ukulele or pumpkin spice latte or banana hammock. This place seemed exotic enough, in a way that looked similar to Atlantis, but the vocabulary was whole new for the princess' somewhat alcohol-soaked brain.
>>”Ladies, thanks for flying Air-X where we specialize in last minute flights. Make sure you give your comments, questions and concerns to Juniper. Because there is a good chance the piolit doesn’t want to hear it. Because he has some catching up to do.”
They touched down, and got out of their seats. Amethyst followed suit, inhaling the scent of salt water and greenery and sunshine. It felt like home, but not quite. It definitely smelled better than New York City, though.
>>”Whatever you ladies want to do. My plans were only to beach but we are pretty close to some small towns, nature preserves and fishing and snorkeling is pretty good here. Burgers and dresses. Ah and some terrific sunsets. I’m up for almost anything. I mean whatever the group is interested in. After the beach of course! Aloha!”
"What's snorkeling?" she wondered as they all made their way out of the jet and onto the beach. The sand was pure and warm, and so far no locals seemed to have noticed that a plane landed on it yet. Amethyst breathed in again and smiled, walking down to the water. She undid the clasps on her dress and dropped the whole thing on the sand. If the others had not gotten a memo about the lac of swim suits in Atlantean culture, they sure did now...
There was finally a look of understanding in Carrick's eyes. Amethyst was not sue whether he liked the concept of gorgons and demigods, but at least he seemed to grasp the idea.
>>”Demigods don’t ‘ave tails?... So Gorgons are the good looking ones then eh?”
She arched an eyebrow. No one in Atlantis really called gorgons good-looking, unless they were lucky enough to have some kind of a decorative gift, like glowing scales or something. But this guy was obviously very proud of himself and his ability to fly.
>>”Least you’re not meeting the other me. You think I look like a Gorgon.”
"The other you?" Amethyst blinked, but Carrick was already up in the air, stirring up a wind with his wings as he flew around, showing off his skills. It was an impressive display. If he did it to convince her that gorgons could be spectacular, he was definitely succeeding.
>>”So, what do you think? Better than yer tailless demigods?”
"The tail is not what's selling it." she smirked, looking up at him "But that's definitely quite a spectacle. So... are you going to nest on the roof or something?"
Amethyst followed Praxi as they walked down a street. It did not seem very threatening or even interesting. She'd expected some underground club or human fight venue or something of the sort. Instead, they stopped in front of a colorful store front, with animal sounds coming from inside. The princess arched an eyebrow. This couldn't be it, surely?
>>"It's a pet store! They have small animals and you can take them home as companions. I asked Miss Grey and she said pets are allowed,"
"We... came here for animal companions?" the princess blinked. The concept was not entirely foreign to her; Atlantean nobility kept pets too. But to go and buy them at a shop?...
>>”Oh do I? Supposing that means we have more in common?... Sorry princess. Don’t think you have much in common with me. Though I’m a betting man so if you’d like to wager one of your gems….”
He really was interested in the gems. Not many people questioned her further about her powers, not initially anyway; even her concubine only thought to know more about them once he was in close contact with her. But this guy... the way he grinned, he was definitely interested in things that made money.
>>”Depends on who ya know. I might know a fence or three that would tell ya otherwise. They also don’t all need to be quality. Can sell ‘em quantity.”
Amethyst arched an eyebrow at him. Quantity? How much blood did he think she had in her body? It was not a bad suggestion, but why would she do that unless she had to? The conversation turned to flying instead. Amethyst had seen plenty of gorgons with appendages that were mostly decorative. The suggestions, however, clearly offended Carrick.
>>”Do I? Love, I rule the skies. Not one mutant when I was living ‘ere before could keep up wit me when it came to flying. None in the city either. Care for a demonstration?”
The princess waved a hand. He was going to demonstrate one way or another, men always did. And she was kind of curious. Winged mutants, with real actual working wings, were rare. And she was curious.
>>”Guess that’s why they’re Gorgons and not Gryphons?... Doesn’t sound very godly. Can’t fly. Next you’ll tell me none of them have tales either.”
"Demigods don't have tails. Gorgons have tails." she pointed out, following him to the kitchen door "Demigods look like me. Gorgons look like you. At least in Atlantis." People over here seemed to take offense to that.
In some ways this guy reminded Amethyst of her concubine. He definitely had the attitude, and the cheekiness towards royalty. The fact that he was a second-time teen too explained a lot.
>>”Was taught a lady never asks... Eighteen now. Supposedly twenty-three. How old do I look? Shoot, maybe I could be mistaken for a minor. Make getting out of trouble heck a lot easier.”
She didn't really know why women were not supposed to ask, and she didn't care. Well, at least he was not much younger. Not like Sam, who went from young to terribly old in one night. That was awkward.
"You look about my age." she noted over the ice cream. Maybe a bit older. But it might have been the teeth and the wings.
>>”Yes, seeing as you clamed to be a demi-god princess... Useful power. Be easy to make a quick buck eh?”
"Quick? No." Amethyst smirked "They are uncut stones, and not all of them are gem quality."
Also, not all of them were rubies, but he didn't need to know that.
>>”Supposing yer gods can fly?”
"Some of us." she shrugged "Depends on what gifts one has. Do you? Actually fly? Some gorgons have wings, but they can't."
>>”The demigods? I’d bow again but I’d rather not risk your wrath. Atlantian gods... Well thank you for gracing us normal beings with your presences.”
Amethyst narrowed her eyes at the gryphon. She couldn't tell if he was making fun of her or not. The tail was doing a... cat-like tail thing. That was probably a sing. Amethyst still did not enjoy cheeky bastards making fun of her standing as a princess, or Atlantean royalty in general, but there was precious little she could do about it.
>>”’nd the rooms ain’t too bad. There is a bed, some rooms even have bathrooms. Beats a cage don’t it?”
A cage? Who was talking about a cage? Not even Atlantis kept gorgons in cages. ... not the harmless ones, anyway. Amethyst scoffed. 'Better than a cage' was a low bar to clear. Really, where did this guy come from?
>>”Ireland, taking care of me mum. Decided to forget all that after she passed so I did what any other kid at heart would do and became a kid again?”
Oh. OH.
"You are de-aged?!" the princess ventured. Not again. "How old are you really?"
>>”Nothing wrong with gills. They help you breath underwater. Be kinda cool. Doubt my wings would be much use underwater. Bout as useful as tits on a bull. So princess. What kind of powers does a god have?”
Now he was just talking nonsense. Amethyst scoffed again.
"Gods have all kinds of powers. Demigods, too. I'm assuming you are asking about mine?" she arched an eyebrow over her bowl of ice cream "I make rubies from my blood."
Stubborn idiot. She knew what a gryphon was. He didn't even know what a gorgon was. Americans really needed a handy name for people like him. "Physical mutation" was just clumsy.
The gryphon was chomping down on the sandwich like he had not had a mean in days. Amethyst's eyes followed the fail flicking.
>>”An ambassador and a princess. Sounds like you have plenty of duties here. What’s an ambassador doing here? Free education here. Nothing fancy. I even managed to pass a class. One… I think… Surly there’s a better place with more towers. Oh what a sight that would be eh? No contact with the outside world ‘cept the birds and dragons. Oh, maybe a Gryphon.”
The mock bowing was annoying. He didn't even know how to execute a decent Atlantead greeting. Did people get all their information about royalty from television?...
"Well, let me know when there is another American school for mutants, one with towers, decent education, and better rooms" Amethyst smirked "Until then, I'm stuck here, representing the demigods of Atlantis."
>>”Atlantis… still underwater or do you have air there? Don’t see gills on ya princess. ’Less they’re hiding somewhere else. If that’s the case none of ‘me business.”
Amethyst blinked. "Why would I have gills? Ew." she wrinkled her nose "Atlantis rose years ago. Where have you been?"
From what Amethyst had seen of the school so far, it was doubtful she'd want to come back if she was an adult free in the world. At least, she assumed the gryphon was an adult. He looked somewhat older than her. What would he come back for, other than the free food?...
Maybe it was the free food. He was clearly eating a lot of it.
>>”Hell no, I don’t’ want to go back to school but it was me mother’s request that I finish school. Rest her soul. Oh, love I’ve got so much more **** better to do.”
Food it was. That, and the mother. Amethyst wondered why she'd want her son to finish school that badly. The guy could fly, and who knew that else. Maybe even had treasure. Who needed school?
>>”Car, nothing wrong with an American education. They can teach ya more than you can learn here. Safer for people who look like you too.”
He was from Ireland, but his mother wanted an American education for him. Go figure. Amethyst realized she knew precious little about Ireland, so she kept eating her ice cream, watching the gryphon devour a giant sandwich monster.
>>”Cash is kings, init? Less of a headache to sell if I need to than gold. Spose I should go find a burrow somewhere fill it gold. Shouldn’t you be in a tower somewhere? Or you an exchange student of some kind? Who give them? Hopefully it wasn’t anyone I liked.”
"Why would I be in a tower?" Amethyst blinked in confusion, then it dawned on her "Oh. Like Danae? Because I'm a princess?... Well, see how that turned out for her..." she smirked "I am not an exchange student. I am an ambassador from Atlantis. The queen shipped me off here to show this place is not just for gorgons."
>>”Oh, right. My mistake, Princess. Forgot this isn’t America home of the clichés. Maybe he turned a fool then?... Oh ho, guess you are here for the show then.”
What a strange gorgon. Obviously one of those who were not impressed by her Atlantean royal title. She was used to that from her recent concubine's attitude. She was still not sure why he assumed she was involved with a prince, but since the royalty Americans knew best was generally the cartoon kid, it was not surprising this Irish person was not up to date either.
Still, she followed him to the kitchen where he proceeded to unpack the fridge.
>>”Well, I wouldn’t really call it being a student. I showed up, didn’t pay attention then decided to leave before they could fail me. Sides, had more important places to be. People to please. Sure you know how that goes being a princess? Duty n’ all that right?”
This guy definitely did not look like someone who would have duties. Amethyst perched on a chair and continued eating her ice cream. Sure, she had duties, but she was getting better at avoiding them recently.
>>”Maybe I’ll enroll again?”
"You want to go back to school?" the princess chuckled, watching him get all the food on the table. His tail handled a knife, which was kind of fascinating. In a gorgon way. "Don't you have something better to do? Like... gryphon things? Gold related? Aren't gryphons supposed to be guarding treasures somewhere?"
