The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

They had both agreed that neither of them would be the hero. It was good, at least, that they had that settled. Matt was fairly sure that she was just agreeing to that so he would stop asking, and would end up playing the hero either way, but at least now he could rag on her if that was the case. He'd seen that sort of behaviour time and time again, and he would be damned if he didn't keep his guard up. Even around her.
It was just a short drive to the final destination, and they were lucky enough to get an easy parking spot. They were parked just in front of a little restaurant that looked too small for its location. Matt put the car in park and turned to his right so he could look at Sveta.
"Okay, so hear me out on this one. It's not as fancy as some of the places in Manhattan, but y'know, I didn't have a lot of heads up to be able to make a reservation."[/b] With that, he stepped out of the car and walked around so he could open the door for Svetlana to do the same. Then, he held out his arm so she could take it if she wanted when they walked in.
The door to the place was small and insignificant compared to the places that flanked it, but it looked sort of friendly. Matt opened the door to reveal a little Italian hole-in-the-wall restaurant.

Matt wasn’t really sure what to expect from her rules, but his mind immediately went to the worst possible scenarios. What kinds of rules was she thinking? Was she expecting him not to be able to keep his hands to himself, or something? It was hard to tell what was running through her mind.
Instead, she went to places that he hadn’t been expecting, but should have been. It was a date, yes, but there was still baggage there. It had only been a few days since they had last been attacked, and he had nearly bitten the dust. It wasn’t absurd at all for her to be nervous or worried, though he wished that it didn’t have to be the case. Still, there were things out of his control. One of them, at the moment, was his body. It just wasn’t quite working the way that he needed it to.
He shrugged and pursed his lips, but nodded. “Alright, yeah. But I have a rule too, then.” he said, turning to her as he turned the car onto the street as well. “If that happens, then we both run. If I’m not playing the hero, then neither are you.” It sounded like a fair trade to him, anyway. Neither one of them would be the one to say that the other should turn tail and book it. Either they both stayed or they both left.
The drive wasn’t too far. He turned the truck down on the next street and then forward one more. It would just be one more turn until they made it.

She would’ve been fine with beer and pizza. Matt felt like a bit of a sucker on that end, but he also knew that it was probably nicer to have something actually planned for the first bit. Start off on the right foot and all that. They’d had so much weird, and part of him just wanted to give her something normal for once. What could go wrong with that? “Too late for that, I guess,” he said with a wink, appearing more confident than he was.
They reached his car in a few moments and climbed in. He’d only just barely had the chance to shampoo the seats to get the bloodstains out, but he’d managed to get most of it. At least, he hoped that he hadn’t missed any glaring spots. That definitely wasn’t the nicest thing to have to avoid. Trying not to think about it, he started the engine and pulled out of the parking garage.
"You know, we're gonna have to have some rules..."
She looked nervous to say that. Matt turned to her and cocked his head as he waited in line to pull out onto the street. It was a fair thing to start with, but it was a little off-putting. “Oh yeah? What’re you thinking?”

She looked surprised by the flowers, which was honestly nice. He hadn’t been sure if she would like them, or if he was going too far with things. It had been far, far too long since he’d done anything like a date, and it was psyching him out. What was he actually supposed to do? It had been so much easier when there were no real expectations.
“We’re doing it for real,” he replied, smirking as he glance down at her hand in his. Saying that out loud made him a little more nervous about it all, if that was even possible somehow. Weren’t the nerves supposed to disappear once things got rolling? He was mostly just nervous that he was going to screw it all up somehow, now that it had become a real thing.
He waited patiently while she had the receptionist put the flowers in water, his hand still in hers. It felt strange to be that connected to another, but he liked it. The receptionist’s eyes on the two of them didn’t bother him so much. It was strange to think about how much had changed since he’d met Svetlana. It felt like much more time than it had really been. Just a few short weeks.
"So... where are we going?"
Matt raised his eyebrows as he led her to the front door and out of the building. “What, you expect me to just spill all my secrets?” There had to be some element of surprise left. “I can tell you that we’re going to dinner first.”

Matt waited for a minute, having knocked at the door, but hearing nothing. For a second, he thought that she may have forgotten or chosen not to go through with things. After a minute, he knocked again and gave it a grace period. Maybe she was on the phone or was listening to music. There were possibilities. After a few minutes, though, he knew that the room was empty. With a frown, he pulled out his phone to make sure that she hadn’t messaged him something and he’d missed it.
Upon finding nothing, he’d been about to send her a message when he heard someone coming down the hallway. He glanced up to see Svetlana, walking toward him rather than coming out of her office. With a relieved grin, Matt clicked his phone off and slid it away as he stepped toward her, helping to close the distance between them.
“Hey. I was worried you might’ve changed your mind,” he said, the release of tension nearly palpable in his tone. Things were alright. She had changed, but not into anything particularly fancy, which was just fine. He didn’t have anything particularly fancy planned, and she was likely actually better off in what she was wearing than something like a dress. “You look great.”
A brief pause gave him a second to remember what was in his hands. “These are for you,” he said, trying to keep the awkwardness from his voice as he handed her a small bundle of lilies. It had been so long since he’d done the whole date thing that he had lost all sense of how to be anywhere near smooth. It was hard to focus when he was in his own head.

That night after work. It wasn’t a long wait, in the grand scheme of things, but it would mean that there wouldn’t be a lot of time to plan anything. Most of the good restaurants in the city would be booked up by that point. He would make something work, though. He was sure of that, and he didn’t want to suggest that they hold off any longer. That just seemed like it would make the both of them suffer more, and she might just change her mind in all that time. “Tonight it perfect.”
Matt likely should have been recovering, yes. That was a fair assessment. “I,” he said, moving his hand into hers before she could touch his side, “have been cooped up in my apartment for far too long. I want to do this tonight. I’ll be just fine.”
Whatever happened, he had decided that it was worth it. He had decided that she was worth it. No matter what came.
After leaving her office, Matt had to actually plan something for them to do that evening. Most of the date restaurants he knew of were booked up or… tainted… which meant that most of them were out of the question. That left new places, which meant that he spent most of his time searching through reviews. Eventually, he settled on one that seemed like it would work and had decent reviews. With a reservation booked, they didn’t have to worry about not getting in, either.
At the given time, Matt got back in his car and drove to Sveta’s office for the second time that day. This time, it felt less urgent, but he was actually a little more nervous as he made the journey back up to the place that he had been earlier. When he made it to her door again, his heart pounded as he knocked and took a step back to wait for her to appear.
That stupid grin was pretty much plastered to his face by that point. Matt was unable to make his face go back to the way that it had been as she rested her forehead against his. He didn’t care about the consequences of spending time with her. He’d survived the last time, and it had to get easier, didn’t it? Either way, it was worth it to be able to keep something that made him feel more alive than he had in years.
Matt had formerly resolved to spend the rest of his time alone. He’d thought that it wasn’t worth the pain or pressure that would come with actually feeling something again. He hadn’t had anything that was for longer than a night in a very long time, and while the idea of something real scared the living daylights out of him, it was also exciting. He was alright giving up his comfortable numbness for the time being.
His hand traced back along to her jaw as he closed his eyes. Sveta was clearly thinking through things, which was fair. This had all be sprung on her, and she’d been trying to keep herself from feeling it. A change in headspace was required to figure things out. While she did so, he moved his thumb gently along her cheek, his hand cupping the side of her face.
Finally, she said something. It was hard not to chuckle at her first comment, which made his injury hurt just a little. Her second comment was a good one, though. His grin grew wider as he looked at her, anticipating an actual night of the something he’d been craving. “Yeah. I like that idea. When are you free next?”
Already, his mind was whirling as he thought through possible places that he could take her. Places that would suit her.
After Zoe had entered in her number, Matt took his phone back and slid it into his back pocket. It was unusual for him to take numbers from people, really. Usually, he would just curve girls at the bar that asked, unless they were just looking for something that was for one night and one night only. He had to be feeling particularly self-destructive for that sort of thing, though.
Typically, he figured that he was better off alone. He had taken Svetlana’s number, but that was a different story. They were two of a kind, and taking her number had seemed like something that would need to happen. It just made sense. There were few other people that he would pour out his soul to and play guitar for on his roof. It was platonic, though. Entirely platonic.
Zoe was a strange exception. The words had tumbled out of his mouth like nothing, but now he was starting to regret them. Was he giving her the wrong idea? All that mention about eating alone and leftovers... it sounded an awful lot like some of the girls who went into his bar and tried to get him to take them home. It was the mating call of the lonely. Matt was lonely sometimes, too, but he was better off that way.
He had paused while typing in his number into his phone. It probably did look like he was trying to do that with her. Getting her number, asking about her cooking, that sort of thing. It looked like flirting. She was doing it back, too, though, which always surprised him when he wore his wedding ring out. It didn’t deter everyone.
“Look, uh- just so you know, I’m not really looking for the whole ‘dating’ thing…” he said, trailing off. Maybe he was jumping to conclusions, but it was better to set up the boundaries earlier rather than later and watch it spiral.
“No, I don’t think you can,” Matt replied, his face breaking into a grin as he took in her features. There was something in her response that let him know that she wasn’t as angry as she was trying to seem. It felt safe, standing there with her in his arms. They were in her office; her place of work, but he had barely noticed. The walls were gone, and nothing felt better. He didn’t want anything else in that moment.
A gloved hand ran through his hair, which made him blink his eyes slowly closed. Was it wrong of him to wish that that specific moment could last forever? Maybe. Maybe all of it was wrong, but if he had learned anything over the years that he’d been losing things, it was that some things were worth grasping onto while they were around. There were good memories that he wouldn’t trade for the world, even if they’d hurt him in the end.
"Where do we go from this?..."
Matt still wasn’t thinking very much. Smirking just a little, he shrugged. His fingers moved gently against the skin on the back of her neck and her back above her shirt. “If I’m being completely honest, I haven’t thought that far yet. I didn’t plan much beyond getting to your office, actually.” He was just hoping that she might say yes and let him in. Other than that, he had no idea. He’d been going things alone for too long to have any sort of clue.

He’d given her an out, just in case she really didn’t feel the way that he thought she did. It was a brief moment before he moved in where she could push him away and tell him to leave and never come back. It was a gamble to lean in, but he was hoping that the hand that was placed on his chest would be placed there lightly, and not to display her reproach.
But he could feel her crumble and relent. Her head tilted in response to kiss him back, and the hand on his chest was resting there, not forcing him back. There were too many things running through Matt’s head to be able to decipher them, so he took his own advice for a minute and letting any thoughts take a backseat. There was no place for them. At least, not then.
It was almost too easy to move against her, though. The hand that had been on her jaw moved to the back of her neck, his fingers gently grabbing at blonde hair, while his other moved to her waist, and then her back. Before that, he’d taken her hand, but that was as far as things had gone. Now, it felt like the floodgates had opened, and, having turned his back on rationality, it was hard to stop. He did, though, after an amount time that would make it impossible to classify the kiss as ‘short’ or ‘wary’. He likely should have been wary, but that was too much to ask.
When he pulled away, it was just barely. His hands didn’t move from her, and he didn’t move his face very far. Mostly, he had opened his eyes to meet hers and gauge some sort of reaction. Something to let him know that she was feeling what he was. He didn’t say anything, though; his words had left him.

Matt had simply said that she should let him know how they turned out because he was a little interested, but he hadn’t actually thought about how she would do so. Maybe he had just thought that he would magically see her in the same supermarket and she would detail exactly how the red sauce had improved her life. Of course, that was foolish. They had cell phones for a reason.
“Oh, yeah. ‘Course,” Matt said, pulling his phone out of his back pocket. He didn’t often give his number out, especially to strangers, but she didn’t look particularly dangerous. It was a old phone that he had; outdated by several models, but it still did the job. He opened the home screen and handed it to her, the contacts page already open. She could stick her number in there any then tell him all about the success or failure of the recipe. And find out how terrible he was at texting. Autocorrect could be cruel when you had reduced range of motion.
For most people, there was some sort of occasion with cooking. Some sort of reason to make a dish that large. Matt did admire people who just cooked for the sake of it, though. There was something lost in the world of technology and delivery food and it was rare to see.
He nodded quickly at the notion of trying new foods. “Yeah, that’s important. The world’s a big place,” he mused. He’d had the unique experience of seeing more than most people, but horizons could still be broadened from the place you’d always called home.

He could have sworn that he saw a flash of warmth in her eyes before it was replaced by a sureness. Matt frowned as he looked at her, knowing that she was readying herself to break the bad news. She didn’t think it was right, or she didn’t feel the same way. Something that would send him away and keep him away. Matt could feel his stomach sinking as he took in the image of her. Could he even turn around now?
"I care about you too. But that's the point, Matt. That would make you a target for everyone who wants to get to me. I can't… I just can't."
She couldn’t. She couldn’t let him be a target. Matt rolled his lips in, nodding and running his hand over his jaw. It made sense where she was coming from; scared to have what happened a few days ago become a regular ordeal. It probably hadn’t helped that he hadn’t handled himself well, letting himself get injured that much. All that had likely done was confirm her fears.
What could he say to her to change her mind? Did he want to change her mind? Yes, he had decided on that. He couldn’t walk out of the room and go back to his regular life without… something. He would never find anyone like her again, and he was sure of that. It didn’t matter if he might be in danger at that point; he’d dealt with danger before, but if it could come with something good, then he would take it. Latch onto one of the only good things that life still had to offer.
“Just… do me a favour and don’t think for a moment,” he said gently, moving even closer still as he rested his hand on her jaw. He turned his head slightly, and, if she let him, pressed his lips to hers.

He was preventing her from going back to work at the moment, but it had been three days. He had to wonder how productive those days had been for her. Had she wondered what happened to him, or had it just been easier to put him out of her mind? Had it been easier to pretend like nothing had happened at all? Maybe it was just the fact that he was an adapted that had made her want to stick around in the first place, and when it go difficult it was better to cut ties.
Only, Matt didn’t even quite believe that. Even as the thought cross his mind, he knew that things were more complex than that. It couldn’t just be chalked up to a fleeting good feeling or two.
"The farther from me you are, the safer you are. I already got you hurt enough, Matt."
There it was. She didn’t want to hurt him. Matt couldn’t help but shake his head at that as he ran a hand through his hair again. What was she expecting him to say to that? Did she think that he could just walk away now? For a minute, he said nothing, but looked at her for a short time. Finally, he broke the silence.
“When I was little, my sister drowned. When I was in the army, I watched my friend step on a landmine. I saw more death there in days than most people will ever see,” he explained, his expression far more composed than it had been the first night that they’d met. “Four years ago, my wife died in front of me. I used… I used to think that I was cursed, that each time it was possible, everyone around me would die.
“You have no idea what it was like to wake up and know that you were okay.” He paused, waiting a beat as he looked down and then out the window. “I’m fine. I survived, and you got out the other side okay, too. I don’t know how you feel, but I care about you, Sveta.” Tentatively, he took a step toward her, his eyes searching hers.

She did leave a note. It wasn’t enough. Matt had to wonder where she had gone and whether she had simply walked right back into the grasp of SUPER. Of course, she had been right about the fact that they wouldn’t come after him, and Haven took care of his apartment, but he couldn’t help but worry. He wanted to see her, too. Make sure that she was doing alright after everything. Even for a woman who had seen it all, that had to have been a lot.
He stepped into her office when she moved aside for him and then closed the door. At least she didn’t seem to be sending him away. She wasn’t angry, it seemed, but she looked surprised to see him. Did she think that he wouldn’t bother to follow up or look for her? Just take it all at face value? There were some things that you just couldn’t come back from or keep living life as normal after. He felt like he couldn’t possibly go back to real life when she was running around somewhere else.
Still, she was mostly worried about causing trouble. Alright, so he couldn’t exactly say that she hadn’t caused any trouble in his life, but he didn’t really regret it. What else was he doing? Just breezing through things? He wasn’t ready to go back to that.
“Yeah, they did a good job. It was cleaned up when I got back,” Matt said. It had felt like a bit of a violation to have people in his apartment when he wasn’t there, but they had been pretty respectful of things. They’d even tried to move his stuff back into the proper place. “It was just the floor and a table or two. Not bad, all things considered.”
He was being calm, but he didn’t really know what he was doing, other than trying to talk to her again. What else did he have to say? I wish you hadn’t gone? “I’m glad you’re doing alright. Did you just go right back to work?”

How great of an idea was it to walk into an office building with a half-baked idea? Well, Matt was still trying to figure that out. How many days had he spent plotting out how he was going to go there? Too many, and yet he had never envisioned the plan past actually getting there. He was standing there, though, at Svetlana’s office, and he had no other plans.
She had opened the door, and there she was, standing there in business-casual dress as if they hadn’t been nearly killed a few days earlier. Part of him wondered what he had been expecting, going there, and then the other part just wondered how she was able to move on that easily. She hadn’t been shot like he had, though, and she got off easier.
It was concern that entered her voice next. Matt simply stood across the threshold, unsure of how to answer her question. Everything was just fine, and he didn’t know what he was there to say. He’d hunted her down for whatever reason and now he was at a loss as to what to actually do next. What did he say to the woman who had turned his world upside down and then left? What on earth could he say to her when he couldn’t even work through his own feelings?
“I just… um… I dunno, I guess I just needed to see you,” he said honestly, running his hand through his hair. He was pretty sure that his words had come out all wrong, and his expression was confused. He felt sixteen again. God, she was overwhelming. “I wanted to make sure you were alright. You just… left.”
Left without a reason. Had he scared her off before? If so he wasn't doing much good by showing up at her office a few days later. It was all a lot.[/div]
