The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Matt worried about what Sveta got herself into more than he likely should have. He had probably never met anyone as capable as her, and he likely never would again, but that didn't stop him from wondering what might happen if she spread herself farther than she was meant to be spread. Surely she wouldn't be able to fend off every danger and thing that came her way forever, and Matt didn't want to be there to see that if it happened. It reminded him of his early days in the military, thinking that he would be able to exist forever in a state of feeling infinitely powerful. Part of him missed those days, but another part of him was glad they were gone. A person couldn't live an actual life while being dangled in front of danger with a regular consistency, and it was hard to find any sense of normalcy when your time revolved around trying not to die and wondering when you might have to take a life.
He did, however, come out of his personal slump with a smirk when she called him "sir". It was truly too bad that he was still at work.
Haven as a concept was fairly confusing to him, and he didn't want to take advantage of Sveta's organization, especially since he wasn't even part of their target demographic of mutants. Still, it sounded like they might have enough pull to make something happen, and that was really all that Matt could hope for at that point.
"I mean, if you think that you guys have the resources for it, then I won't say no..." he trailed off, eyeing the door that had just opened once again.

“You’re definitely not going vigilante on this one,” Matt warned, his brow furrowing. It wasn’t that he doubted Sveta’s capabilities, but he also knew that there were many risks involved in this situation, and he really didn’t want to risk losing her over something that he could just as easily have moved on from. He didn’t technically have to work at that bar. If he wanted to, he could walk away then and there and work on finding something else to focus his life on. Provided, of course, that he could find somewhere else that would overlook his criminal record.
But hey, he hadn’t planned on bartending for the rest of his life, anyway.
"As much fun as it is to suit up every once in a while, mob versus vigilante rarely ever ends well. And SUPER is... well. But I can definitely bring this to Haven. Your turf is kinda our turf too, anyway."
“I mean, you don’t put yourself out over it,” Matt feigned, ignoring the nagging feeling in his stomach that she was absolutely the bar’s best option in all of this. He felt bad dumping his drama in her lap and leaning on her to find a solution, though. Especially since, despite their history, they had really only been “dating” for a few weeks. “Is this the kind of thing that Haven does? I feel like I don’t even really know what it is you guys do.”
He lifted the corners of his mouth like a shrug, unsure of how to take the offer. Part of him wanted to jump on it, but another part needed more convincing.

Sveta was someone who intimately understood the feeling of running from one's demons, both literal and metaphorical, and that was something that Matt really appreciated about her. Matt often felt as if there was a level of separation between himself and most people that he would never have a hope of tearing down, but the same couldn't be said when he was around Sveta. She understood. Better than he could have asked for.
She added to his list with things more outlandish than he had listed to begin with, which made him smirk. It was easy to forget that when she was deep in the bowels of the mutant underworld, she saw crazier shit than he could even dream of.
It was nice to be candid, though - to feel as though he didn't have to put on some sort of front or to hide what was actually happening. What did he do to deserve having her walk into his life on two separate occasions? He'd likely have to chalk it up to some damn good karma after all the bullshit he'd been dealt before.
"May I get a drink in the meantime?..."
"'Course. On the house. What do you feel like?"
"So, how are you thinking about handling this? Paying them is probably the most peaceful solution, but you'll end up paying both sides eventually either way. Thinking about going to the cops?"
Matt ran his hands over his face with a heavy sigh. What was his plan? He didn't own the bar, so it technically wasn't on him, but he'd talked to the manager, and it really wasn't as if anyone had any sort of clue as to where to go next with everything going down. "Fuck.... I don't know. Cops are a non-option since we're pretty sure they've been paying them off for years, and there isn't the money to pay off even the one side, not to mention both." Peace was the ideal outcome, but it wasn't likely, and Matt had never been a pacifist anyhow. "Don't suppose you have a handbook for how to deal with gang territory lines lying around, do you?"

It was nice to have Sveta there in the middle of his workday, even if it was after some strange events. There was nothing normal about their relationship, but moments like these teased a hint of normalcy that Matt didn't think he'd ever find again. Call him a softy, but he liked the idea of having someone there in the midst of everything, and not having that personal always be running from danger.
"There's probably a good chance the other side is gonna show up soon for the same reason"
Matt nodded with a sigh. She was probably right - being in the middle of two territories was a dangerous place to be, and they could hardly expect that the other side was just going to let them be, especially as soon as they noticed that their opponents were already trying to sink their teeth in.
It sounded like Sveta's boss was a bit of a punk, especially since he had taken his money and run a little while ago, which meant that Sveta was free for extended lunches. Matt liked that he could steal her away without someone noticing if he wanted to, but he also had to wonder what was actually going on at the head offices of Haven. It all sounded a little shady to him.
"I have time for a burger and fries. And don't worry, I don't think it's you. This kinda shit comes with the territory in a city like this..."
"Yeah, but I've got my own personal lightning rod, I think. Bar fights, bodega robberies, arrests, gangs, ninjas..." he shook his head with a smirk that was a little more jovial than how he was actually feeling. He turned around and hit his fist on the door of the kitchen, hoping that it might catch Corey's attention. "We've got an order!" It was hard to blame him - this shift had been well above his pay grade.
Turning back to Sveta, he shrugged gently and cocked his head. "Hopefully he'll get it started in a few minutes. I think he's still spooked."

Matt hated the fact that he was now bringing Sveta into the drama at the bar, but he knew that bottling it up and hiding it from her wouldn't end well. Plus, he would have expected that she would share something like that with him so he could help in any way that he was able to, and lord knew that Sveta had more than a few resources at her fingertips.
"Protection money? Who sent them?"
"One of the local gangs. Seems like the bar is pretty much on the line between two territories, and, well, they want us to pay them each month so we don't have to be involved with anything that goes down." Otherwise... well, who knew what would happen when something ramped up. "Apparently they've been coming around for a few weeks now, but it's always just been one guy sitting in the corner. Until now, that is."
This time it was different. Apparently they were getting tired of the bar's non-answers and wanted to speed the process along a little.
"I'm not sure why I can't seem to avoid this shit. Seems to be my lot in life." Matt cleared his throat and grabbed a menu from one of the displays next to Sveta and set it down in front of her. "But it'll get dealt with, and you'll need to get back to work before long. I wouldn't want, uh, Dawson thinking that I'm keeping you from your job or something."

It wasn’t hard to tell from her sigh that Sveta was disappointed with his reaction, and Matt knew exactly why that would be. They had agreed a few weeks ago that they wouldn’t hide things from each other anymore, and that they would be honest. So far, Matt was doing a shitty job, and he felt like a shit... boyfriend(?) because of it.
What was he supposed to do, though? Sveta had come in on her lunch break for food, and Matt would feel bad dumping his crap on her when she was just trying to have a good day.
Still, he felt like he owed her, and what the hell? He had learned by now that there was nothing he couldn’t trust Sveta with. She was the only person he had felt truly comfortable around in a very long time.
“Okay, you’re right,” he admitted with a sigh. “Those guys you passed on your way in.... They had just been here trying to... intimidate us, I guess.” The street was controlled by gang territory, which most people knew, but up until that point it hadn’t really mattered all that much to the bar- he supposed they had finally reached the point where they were in too visible of a location to keep going unchecked by those who wanted control.
The “intimidation” was nothing that would have made Matt scared back in the day, but now, he wanted no part of this, especially since he was still on parole. This was the last thing that the bar needed, especially since they didn’t have the money to pay as much as the gang wanted, and they really didn’t have the manpower to do anything else about it.

For a brief second, Matt wondered whether Sveta wouldn't notice that something was off with him and breeze past the topic. That would be the best way to deal with the issue, in his opinion. Wasn't that how he got past everything in his life, anyway? Push it down until he could forget about it all for a little while and pretend that it wasn't an issue.
Unfortunately, he knew deep down that he wouldn't be able to ignore this problem for long. Especially since the cook, Corey, had probably hadn't disappeared after seeing the men because he needed a bathroom break. It had been far from a pleasant conversation.
Sveta put one gloved hand on his, and he stopped his pacing and stood very still where he was. There was no need for the protection from skin-to-skin contact between the two of them, since Matt's abilities cancelled out Sveta's, but it was another reminder that her whole life was built around taking precautions. Perhaps he could stand to take a page out of her book.
"Hey. Everything okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, of course," he said, unconvincingly, as he turned around, slid his hand out from under hers, and busied himself by organizing two mixed up bottles. "Why? Is everything okay with you?"

Lunch was usually decently slow at the bar. They weren't exactly known for their food, and despite the kitschy decor and mood lighting that always threatened to put Matt to sleep, they weren't quite underground enough to be a tourist location. The bar truly was just a run-of-the-mill neighbourhood joint, with nothing more than the odd expected regulars on a Wednesday afternoon. The girl who worked on her laptop was back for her regular order of fries and a beer, and the day drinkers were enjoying their regular booth in the corner.
By all means, it had been shaping up to be a regular day.
That was, of course, until about 20 minutes before, when two men had walked in on that fateful afternoon. Their suits stuck out like sore thumbs, and their ugly mugs really weren't fitting, either.
There weren't many things that could shake Matt those days, but he had to admit, the slight tremor in his hands was unusual, and he wasn't used to hearing the flow of his own blood through his ears like that.
The men left, and as they did, another unexpected form made her way through the door. It had been a few weeks since he'd met back up with Sveta, and he had absolutely no regrets about the situation. He'd felt even more of a drive to pull up his socks in this second chance at life since she was in it, and she was a more than welcome distraction from the monotony that had become every other aspect of his days on that planet. Besides, he was pretty sure he would never find anyone else who understood him like she did.
That being said, he wished she had waited maybe an hour or so before coming into the bar. He held his palms flat to the countertop as she entered and flashed her a half-hearted grin, trying to hide whatever anxiety had shot through him minutes before. "Hey gorgeous. We're always serving food when you come in- I'm pretty sure I have pull in the kitchen." There was something off about his tone, and he knew it even as the words came out, but there was nothing he could do. There was no way to right the course from the diverted path.

It was nice to have dropped the pretence around one another... not that they had exactly started with much at all. Their first meeting had involved a lot of drinking and going into the darkest parts of themselves, and Matt could safely say that Sveta knew more about him than some of his family members.
Still, that morning, he got the idea that Sveta didn't feel like she needed to pretend or put on any sort of mask. There was nothing between them - almost literally.
"Are you one of those barista types that hand-makes his own coffee?"
"What, don't tell me that you're gonna shoot down a french press?" he scoffed with a smirk. "I'm a bartender. I make my living by mixing good drinks, and I'm sure as hell not going to draw the line at good coffee." Besides, a french press was the best way to make coffee for one person at a time, and that was usually his situation. There was no use in brewing a whole pot to let half of it go to waste.
They had successfully wasted the morning in the best way, which meant that there was still the rest of the day left to figure out. Matt wouldn't have minded if Sveta had said that she wanted to leave, since he knew she had a life to get back to, but he had to admit that it was nice to be there like that. There was a beautiful stranger wrapped in his bedsheets standing in his kitchen, and he wouldn't complain if nothing interrupted that.
"I'm supposed to work tonight, but that's not until much later, and besides... I've heard there's a flu going around or something," he said with a wink. "Now, how do you like your pancakes?"
The one he was working on was just about done, so he slid it onto a plate next to the stove before getting to work on the next one.

She fell over.
Matt was just about ready to call it right then and there, as if she’d done the whole thing as some sort of diversion so he wouldn’t notice her clearly faked ID. He rolled his eyes and went to pick up the next glass to clean before he noticed the giant bloodstain forming on her dress.
So, okay, she wasn’t faking it.
“The hell?” he croaked, feeling his shoulders tense as the room started to feel smaller and smaller. Was there a sniper somewhere? Who would shoot a goddamned kid, for chrissake? Or was it that she had been walking a while with some sort of injury, delirious from the pain?
Immediately, his brain spiralled with every possible insane scenario that would involve a child somehow receiving a severe abdominal injury in the middle of an empty bar. His muscles felt tense and rigid, and it felt like he was somewhere else again; somewhere far more hostile than some bar in Queens.
After a second, though she seemed to sit up with tears in her eyes, and Matt snapped back into action. Military training kicked in a few minutes too late, and he hopped over the bar to where she had collapsed on the floor. He reached for her and reached to cover the wound with pressure to stop the bleeding.
“What happened? Does it feel like you got shot?” he questioned, his voice hushed and hurried. Turning back over his shoulder, he hollered toward the kitchen, where the lone cook would likely be sat in the back on his phone.

The first pancake was sufficiently browned on both sides, which meant that it was good enough to hand over to Moby. Of course, he would have eaten it no matter how it turned out, but Matt liked to think the dog had a few standards, at least. He flipped it off the edge of the pan and grabbed it gingerly with two fingers before handing it unceremoniously to the dog, who wolfed it down in a matter of seconds. Matt REALLY needed to buy dog food.
There were two people in the apartment with odd breakfast routines, it seemed. He knew in his head that Sveta lived a hard life, but he didn’t always connect the two dots very well. He blinked for a moment at her mention of “painkillers and vodka” (he was, of course, slightly turned on by her pronunciation of “vodka”, but that was besides the point), but he brushed it off. He didn’t know what it was like to live with her mutation, and he also knew he had no place to judge any of her choices. Plus, there was little she could say at that point that would deter him any.
“Sorry, I’m all out of vodka, but the painkillers are in the cabinet beside the microwave, and the orange juice is in the fridge. I would offer to grab it, but I’m going to be busy flipping pancakes,” he said with a sly grin as he poured more batter into the pan, careful that it formed a neat circle.
One thing he had missed especially in prison was good coffee. They had coffee in there, sure, but it was designed to worsen your experience more than anything else, really. It smelled like coffee. It looked like coffee. It tasted like the underside of a shoe. Another dead end in threat trap of the American justice system. As soon as he was out, Matt had stocked up on his favourite brands and made cup after cup of the stuff until his mouth burned and it no longer tasted like anything anymore.
“Always coffee for me. We can’t all make our own caffeine, unfortunately. Some of us have dependencies instead.”
The pancake had begun to bubble along the edges, so he picked up the pan in one hand and nudged it so the pancake would slide up the edge and flip to the uncooked side. He did his best to catch it, and did so with middling success. It landed in the centre of the pan and slid just a little so the face would be lopsided. Still cool, in his opinion.
Acting like it was no big deal as he set the pan back down on the burner, Matt turned back to Sveta. “So what does your day look like now?”

It was later in the day than Matt usually woke up, but he hadn't wanted to disturb either of them before they woke up regularly. Plus, they had been busy the night before, and the extra sleep was welcome.
Still, he was disappointed to see that he had woken Sveta up before he was finished, as he'd been hoping that he could surprise her just a little. But as she stood up from the bed, only using the bedsheets as a form of getting dressed, he had no regrets whatsoever. He grinned as she walked over and wrapped his free hand around her waist as she joined him in the kitchen. She looked perfectly ruffled by the night before, and perfectly out of place standing in his new little kitchen; like a transplant from a dream into something that felt all too real. Leaning over, he planted a kiss on her forehead to greet her. "Morning."
"So, we are not having carrots for breakfast?"
"Well, I mean, you're welcome to the carrots in the fridge, but I figured pancakes would be more of a breakfast item," he said with a chuckle. He'd at least had the ingredients he needed for pancakes in his limited stock in the fridge. Eggs, milk, and pancake mix were all staples in his pantry. "The first one has to be for Moby, though. He got the short end of the stick last night."
The poor guy had been staring at him with wide eyes since he'd gotten the pan out, and as the first pancake sat on the surface of the pan, the dog inched closer with each passing second. It had gotten to the point where Matt worried he would jump up at any second and tip the pan over. For now, though, he was just pressed against Matt's leg with a fair bit of pressure.
"So are you a coffee, tea, or orange juice person in the morning?" he asked, turning back to Sveta as he used his free hand to turn the first pancake over.

Moby liked to get in the way of things when he wasn't exactly invited to the conversation. Matt let out a small chuckle as he pushed the dog's nose away with an easy hand. "Sorry, Moby. You might have to hang out along tonight," he said gently as he used the moment of movement to maneuver the two of them off the couch and in the direction of the bed.
The morning came slowly and quietly, with little light streaming in on a foggy November day. Matt blinked awake, tangled in sheets and with skin pressed against skin. For a second, he had to ground himself; to remind himself of what happened before he'd fallen asleep. It was nothing that he'd expected, but it was the best thing to wake up to.
What light that did come through lit the room in a gentle blue hue, outlining the shapes that covered the bed. He stayed still for a moment, not wanting to disturb anything prematurely. How was it possible that the night before he had thought that there was no chance that Sveta would ever be in his life again?
It seemed like a lifetime ago that he'd been alone in the store when it was robbed, ready to run away from facing her again. He wished that he hadn't had a year between this and the last time he'd seen her, but of all the ways that it could have played out, he wasn't complaining about this.
He stayed there for a few minutes, his head resting on his arm as he watched the way that Sveta breathed in and out, blissfully unaware that the world was going on without her.
After it had felt like long enough, he carefully extracted himself from the tangle of limbs and bedding to stand on the floor next to the bed. After pulling on a pair of boxers and some sweatpants, Matt began his mission of conquering cooking without waking her up.
It went pretty well at first, but it was only a few minutes before he looked up and realized he must've woken her somewhere along the way.

For a second, she simply stared at him. Had he read the situation wrong? He'd figured that they were on the same page now; wanting to deep dive into what being together meant for them both. But perhaps, he realized, he was too out of touch to recognize what was too far, and to notice that he should allow things to stay where they were rather than pushing for more.
Maybe if she said something.
But then she leaned back in, and his fears were quelled. He leaned in against her, putting his hand behind her neck as he grasped at the loose tendrils of hair.
"Do you have a bed in here somewhere, or do you sleep on the couch?"
Matt grinned despite himself, nodding to the other side of the apartment. "Over there. Sorry, I didn't really prepare for company or anything," he said, knowing that the bed wasn't made or really even presentable. He was trying not to worry about that then, though - he was focused on the fact that Sveta was here, and that she wasn't going anywhere else. He'd let go of everything else to hold her. "It's a good mattress, though."
