The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"Do I take one for each time?"
"Only if you want to," Matt replied with a raised eyebrow. He'd caught a glimpse of a teenage rebel in her somewhere, but he really hadn't expected that. There were no details, only the insinuation that she had been arrested more than once. That was ballsy, really. Matt had never found himself in hand cuffs before, and he had rarely met a person who had done it more than once, and was still on the other side of bars to tell the tale. She clearly had a pretty sordid past of her own.
The next question was an easy one for Matt to admit to. He'd been wearing a t-shirt back at his bar, so she might've caught a glimpse of the tattoo on the back of his arm. He was sitting with a jacket on, though, so there was no easy way to make his body art obvious without removing it. He decided to pick up his shot glass and tip it back wordlessly. Unless she asked for more information, the tattoo would be up to her imagination.
Matt set his glass down on the table with a little more force, beginning to feel the buzz from the vodka. The next question he posed simply. "Never have I ever run away from home." If she was as much of a troublemaker as she'd claimed, then that was bound to be a surefire.

Just like he thought, Svetlana had to drink when Matt went. There was no real way out of that one, considering she'd already admitted that she was from Russia. Matt himself had never bothered to travel there, even in his time travelling, he simply hadn't gone there. Still, it was on his bucket list. A one day thing. For now, he was content to simply watch Svetlana shoot the glass in front of her and pour her next.
"Maybe, maybe not," he said with a shrug, drumming his hands rather awkwardly before rearranging the shot glasses in front of him. His mind was doing alright, but he still had all this extra energy that he didn't quite know what to do with.
"Never have I ever... gone to college."
Matt raised his eyebrows and opened his hands, suggesting that he hadn't either. It was a little surprising, actually. He wondered what had made a pretty young Russian girl move to the states if not for school. He'd heard of mail order brides being something that some people would buy into, but he wasn't sure if he could see it. She wasn't wearing a wedding ring, either, so he wasn't quite able to connect the dots. Still, she hadn't gotten him to drink, so he was both winning and losing. In terms of getting black out drunk, he was definitely still losing.
"Never have I ever... been arrested," he said after a second to consider. It was a rather personal question, but he was hoping that he could get a little more out of her than the one or two word answers that she had given him so far.

It sounded like his abilities were pretty much just guess and check. Wonderful. Leaning back in the booth, Matt gestured away from the table toward the open floor. “I mean, if you want to tell me when you get that coffee buzz again, then be my guest,” he said. He still didn’t really care that much, but if she wanted to go through and make it clear where the line was, then he wasn’t going to stop her. She honestly seemed more interested in the fact that he was an Adapted than he did, though he figured that might be because she said she felt good in his aura. Probably another reason she hadn’t turned tail the second he started to act differently.
Svetlana was being an excellent sport, though. Never Have I Ever wasn’t Matt’s first thought when it came to drinking games, but he figured he was already deep enough in a hole here. Why not make it worse for himself? He merely smirked at her comment about spinning a bottle, though. Under normal circumstances, she would be interesting company.
She ordered the full bottle, which Matt had to agree with. There were still two shots on the table, but the chances were that they wouldn’t last all that long. Laying his palms flat against the surface of the table, he looked across at the blonde, his mind now concerned with thinking of something he’d never done. Yeah, this was a good distraction technique.
“Never have I ever been to Russia,” he admitted, starting off easy so she would have to drink. There was no way she was getting around that one. He waited for her to drink one of the leftover shots on the table while he accepted the bottle from the waitress coming toward them. He stuck the bottle between them, feeling slightly more calm than before.
According to Svetlana, it was important to know exactly how far his aura reached. Matt nodded absently, not so sure that he agreed with that sentiment. What was the good in knowing just how far it reached when he didn’t care whether he had it at all? So far, it had actually affected him, what? Twice? It didn’t seem like it was that important to know the specifics.
Still, she was playing along with his crap, so he would do the same for her. ”Alright, so how would you find that out, anyway? Don’t tell me there’s some sort of empirical metric.” They were supposedly rare, but Matt didn’t know how much infrastructure there would be around ‘Adapteds’ as a species. Would he be expected to attend some sort of meeting? Would there be medical procedures? Well now he was just getting ahead of himself. It was easy to do that when you’d nearly lost track of yourself altogether.
The bartender returned a second later and dropped off four shot glasses filled with vodka. The minute they hit the table, Matt tipped one back and put the glass back down on the tabletop. Drinking just for the sake of getting drunk wasn’t something he had done in recent history, but the memories of doing so were still fresh in his mind. It was all resurfacing, reminding him of every little thing that had turned to sh** in his existence. The list was pretty long, too.
”You really shouldn’t have followed me in here. I might be terrible company,” Matt admitted, turning back to Svetlana. Who would actually want to sit across the table from some strange who was actively losing his mind? Someone who felt responsible, that’s who. For that, Matt felt a little bad. There were other ways to get drunk that weren’t just tipping shots back one by one. ”Know any ways we can make this a little less one sided? Drinking games or sh** like that?”

Matt had dragged some pretty girl along through his weird trip following the new information he had just been given. She was just some poor woman who had shown up while he was working, and while, yes, she was partially responsible for his current state, she really didn't have anything to do with the way he was acting. She didn't owe him anything, and she definitely didn't need to be the one babysitting him while he entered this state of being out of control. Usually, he was on top of his emotions; he was the one in control, save for his PTSD episodes. In that moment, though, it was almost like he was having an out of body experience. He was out of control, and he felt as though he was on some sort of caffeine high. There was so much inside of him. So much that it felt like he was going to burst.
Still, she was being a good sport, and Matt wasn't ready to be alone yet. Poor girl was just going to have to stick by him for the time being. He nodded, somehow guessing that she was just being nice. He drummed his hands on the table, glancing around to see if he could spot a waiter or a bartender willing to travel over to the far reaches of the booths.
He turned back to Svetlana a second later, having caught the eye of a waiter. Normally, he would have scoffed at the very idea of sharing his past with a total stranger, but that night, all bets were off. If she hadn't been scared off in that moment, then she definitely would be after he got going. Maybe it was good that she was a total stranger, though. What were the chances that he would see her again? Maybe it was a sign that he should just tell her and then be on his way, having shared it. But no, she wasn't a therapist. She was just some poor woman who didn't deserve to be dumped upon.
"Ask me again in a drink or two," he said simply, before turning to the waiter that approached them and ordering a round of vodka shots. Again, not his usual drink, but he figured it was best to keep things on the same track. Svetlana the Russian might appreciate it, anyway.

Just him smoking. That was fine; Matt was pretty used to it by that point. It was becoming more of a social taboo than anything else, but it was something that he could never quite kick. He stuck both the lighter and pack in his pocket when she refused.
By the time that they reached the bar, he’d stomped his cigarette out underneath his foot and had started opening the door for her. ”Sober companion?” he repeated back to her, quirking his eyebrows. ”Up to you, but that doesn’t sound like much fun.”
Actually, nothing sounded like much fun to him in that moment, but he knew that he would rather have someone drinking with him than having to cover for him if he had too much. Besides, his apartment was on the subway line and he could pick up his car later. Worst case scenario he could call an Uber and suffer his rating dropping a bit. A day of allowances.
Once they were both inside, Matt took a seat at one of the booths and leaned his head back against it, staring at the ceiling for a minute. ”Sorry if I’m scaring you at all; this is... weird for me.”

Did he eat there? Man, she really was Russian. Matt glanced back at her as he quirked an eyebrow and stuck a cigarette between his teeth. He didn’t smoke often anymore, but again, it was a day of allowances. He held the pack out for her for a second in case she wanted to take one. ”It’s a saying. I’m not going to sit and drink in front of my working coworkers,” he explained with a shrug.
"This is not just the adapted aura, huh."
Matt turned back to glance at her with a sigh, his hands busy with his lighter as he pushed the door open with his back, stopping just outside to hold it for her with the side of his foot. Did he go into his past? Scare her more than he probably already was at that point? No, that wasn’t something Matt said to strangers. Ever. They were both going to be vague, it seemed.
”No, it’s not just the aura,” he replied simply. He could care less about having powers; it was like he always said, actions defined the person. It wasn’t about the fact that he could do something, it was about what he had done with it in the past. He walked down the street, his eyes landing on the bar that was just a few buildings down. He knew full well that he couldn’t smoke inside, so he made quick use of the time that he had. ”I don’t know about you, but I’m up for drinking to forget.”

To his relief, the blonde didn’t argue with him. Instead, she nodded and agreed, and even went as far as to actually give him her name. Svetlana. Sounded as Russian as she did. ”Matt,” he replied, shaking her hand across the countertop. ”Someone has to freak me out eventually, I guess.” It was bound to happen. Karma always found a way.
Matt was feeling a bit strange; almost as if he was floating or not really there. Ten more minutes. Nope, he didn’t want to wait ten more minutes. It was dead, anyway, and the next music group hadn’t even arrived. He would survive one write up if it came to that. Besides, he had already decided that it was a day to take a few liberties and break a few rules. After what he’d learned, he was sure that he’d earned them. Plus, he so rarely did anything that he wasn’t supposed to at that job; it would be alright in the end.
”Wait here,” he said to Svetlana, already waking away. He leaned over the little metal counter and stuck his head into the kitchen, where the two cooks were just standing around chatting, waiting for an order. ”Hey, uh, just keep an eye on the front for me until Hank gets here, alright? I gotta head.” Without waiting for their response, Matt walked over to the back room and grabbed his jacket and various items. He could hear the cooks grumbling, but he didn’t really care. Neither of them were trained to work the bar, but the place would be alright for ten minutes. It was just ten minutes.
As he approached the bar again, he motioned for Svetlana to follow him. ”There’s another bar down the street; I don’t s*** where I eat.” Ditching a little early was one thing, but ditching to go drink at one of the back tables was another entirely. He walked briskly toward the door, already digging in his pocket for his pack of cigarettes as he looked behind him to see if Svetlana was following.

Mostly good. Well, at least Matt could rest easy in the moment, knowing that he wasn’t hurting anyone now. It wasn’t a ton of comfort, but it was some. He nodded, his eyes unfocused by that point. He was minutes away from getting lost in his memories, but he was managing to hold it together.
The world was messy and private; two very good descriptive words. If he did meet someone else like him, then it was likely that they would both go on their way, never knowing their common trait. Really, it was only when he met a mutant that was aware that their power was being turned off that he would have any issue at all. Or, that’s what it sounded like, anyway. ”There aren’t any other complications with this, are there?” Matt wasn’t entirely sure if he wanted an answer to that, but it was better to be safe than sorry.
Matt leaned on the back counter with a sigh, crossing his arms as he cast his eyes up to the clock on the other end of the wall. It was later than he thought it was, actually. That meant that he could go home and get plastered by himself and throw things for a bit. He could lose himself in his mistakes and the things he couldn’t control. He could do that, or...
”So I got a few minutes until my shift change. I think for this, you owe me a drink. A real drink that’s not underneath the counter.” He smirked a little at the blonde woman. She didn’t really owe him anything, but she had just given him information that brought light to old wounds. He didn’t really want to go home alone to drink, since he knew it would send him to even darker places, but with someone else he knew he’d have to keep holding himself together.

One or two word answers were all that she gave him in response to his first two questions. Matt narrowed his brow as he looked at her, as if trying to decide what to make of it. No one was enough to a clean freak to eat a hotdog with gloves on, and if they were, then they definitely wouldn’t have decked out their meal the way she had. She had taken the autonomy about his abilities away from him, but she had the option to keep her own. Still, Matt wasn’t going to overstep if she didn’t want him to. It very much seemed like she didn’t want him to.
It was only when he asked his final question that she said more than two words. Actually, she said a lot more than two words. Her powers were always on, so she felt it when he snatched them away. ”So it a good feeling? Bad? Weird?” Hopefully that would get her going a bit. He’d never met someone who liked to talk about themselves as little as he did.
But he understood her on a level he didn’t understand most people. Matt went as far as to chuckle slightly awkwardly as she mentioned that the world wasn’t black and white. ”You can say that again,” he agreed. If anyone knew that, it was Matt. He just had to get over himself for now.
”Is it rare, then? Or am I likely to run into another poor sucker who got lumped into the same category?” Were there other people who had had their lives ruined in the same way? She said that he was human, so that set him apart from mutants in a way, but he wondered how similar it would be to their experience. He’d gotten by for 34 years without knowing what he was, though, so that was something.

Okay, so she was a mutant. Matt had pretty much been expecting that all along, considering her affiliations and the strange way she’d been acting since she’d come in. It all made sense; it fit together like the last piece of some twisted puzzle. But man, he had been hoping for just a smidgen of forgiveness from whatever deity was looking down on him that day. If she wasn’t a mutant, then she wouldn’t have any authority over whether or not he could turn off powers. Of course, he hadn’t been so lucky.
He nodded when she explained her powers, though, rubbing his eyelids with his thumb and his forefinger. No wonder she needed a drink if she was making people hyper all the time. ”Okay, so you get people high when you come close enough to them, then?” he mused, half to her and half to himself. A pretty girl who also felt like caffeine? She must’ve been doing pretty well for herself. Hell, she could market that no problem if she wanted to. Still he had another question. ”And why the gloves, then?” If it was just an aura, then why did she need to bother with them? Maybe it was just a style choice after all?
He was starting to feel a little better after the shot he’d taken under the bar, but his head was still spinning a little. Matt grasped the bridge of his nose with a sigh, trying to ground himself while he was in public. With any luck, the woman would keep answering his questions to take his mind off things.
”How do you know about... what was that word? Adaptable?” he asked. She must’ve had her ear to the ground in the organization she worked for, but he didn’t know how privileged the information she had just given him was. He didn’t doubt her, though - as he thought through his life events, it was like filling in the blanks that kept him up at night. It wasn’t the answer he wanted, but it was the one that he’d always sort of known, deep down. But how many of them were there? It didn’t sound like a run of the mill thing.

Matt paid little mind to the fact that she'd finished her food. He was on autopilot as he reached over and took the plate out from in front of her. He stuck it on the countertop behind him, despite the fact that it was supposed to go in the kitchen. Going to the kitchen didn't feel like something he really wanted to do in that moment. Actually, he just wanted to go home and throw things around for a bit, but that was out of the question. Again, his actions were constrained by the fact that his rent was nearly due.
She said that he needed a drink. She was right; really right. Normally, Matt would have said no. He was working, he had rules. He couldn't just drink when he was at work, no matter how much he wanted to. That night, though, he felt like he deserved a pass. Hell, he deserved several passes. Meeting her eyes for a second, he grabbed a glass from a stack and poured from the same glass of vodka that he'd made her martini from. It wasn't his usual pick, but he wasn't feeling particularly choosy in that moment. No, he was feeling like he needed to get black out drunk very, very soon. Unfortunately, he was going to have to settle for just the one drink.
Matt ducked just below the counter, like he was about to grab something, and in one go, downed the drink. He stood up a second later and put the glass in the sink, displaying expert subtlety. There were cameras on the bar that very few people watched, but drinking on the job would be grounds for a write up if anyone did see it. He needed to make sure that it wasn't obvious what he was doing.
Something to get his mind going again was more than necessary, he decided. Something - anything - that wasn't Sophie's face. "So what're your powers, then? What am I stopping you from doing?"

She just thought he would want to know. Yeah, that sounded about right. Matt had assumed, by that point, that she was a mutant, and that only confirmed things. He could care less if she was a mutant, but the information was what had thrown him off. He ran a hand over his jaw, taking a deep breath as he put a hand on his waist, staring the woman down. God, that was incredibly rude. She had completely thrown him off his game. Usually, there was very little that would actually make Matt angry or concerned, but she'd definitely hit a nerve. "F***..." he muttered under his breath.
He needed a minute. Matt turned around silently, putting the shakers away. They weren't dry yet, but he needed something to keep himself busy. Something to keep his mind from going to the absolute worst places. He could not go there. Not then, maybe not ever. Maybe it was a good idea to give his old therapist another call. Wow, he hadn't expected that, walking into work that morning.
With the shakers away, Matt was out of menial tasks. He closed his eyes and let out a breath as he leaned on the back countertop, taking a minute to compose himself. He had to say something. He had, after all, just been incredibly rude to the woman, who probably thought that he was just being an ass because she just exposed herself as a mutant. As much as she had just said something to him, she'd also just let her own secret out and was trusting him with it.
"Sorry," he said as he turned around. "It's not you. I've got... my own s*** with this stuff," he admitted, casting his eyes down. "Lotta s***, actually. I guess I've had an idea about that for a while." She didn't need to hear his whole life story, and he didn't really want to tell it. He knew that he likely wouldn't even make it all the way through, and then things would get really weird.

It wasn't that Matt didn't care about what she was saying, but she did sound a little bit crazy. He'd simply said that he didn't know, because that was the truth. She didn't seem to be content with that, though, and so she kept going. She kept going and told him something that Matt really, really didn't want to hear.
"Well, breaking news then. You null mutant powers. Cheers?"
Matt paused, holding the shaker underneath the water but not scrubbing anymore. The water ran over the metal, and over his hands, over his wedding ring, but he paid it no mind. What the f*ck? What the hell was she getting at? Matt stared at the shaker for a minute, repeating the words that she'd just said over and over in his mind, trying to take them in fully. Null mutant powers. Null mutant powers. That meant just one thing, the thing that Matt had known all along.
There were two more deaths that he was responsible for.
The night that Sophie died, he'd watched as a mutant's powers failed in front of him, and in seconds, both he and Matt's wife lay dead. He'd tried to get the thought that it had nothing to do with him out of his head, but it was more likely that he'd known all along that it was his fault. What else could it be, really? There was no other explanation. God damn it, he really hadn't want to know that. Matt shut his eyes and raised his head to the ceiling, trying to get a hold of himself. He would not have a breakdown at work. He would not. He would get a hold of himself and finish off the shift. It was only another hour or so, anyway.
He reached over and shut off the stream of water, dumping the shaker in the other sink to dry for a while. With his brow furrowed and his eyes narrowed, he walked back toward the blonde at the bar. There was a new distain in his glare and in his voice. "What would give you that idea, huh?" he asked. He had no reason to be angry with her, really; it wasn't her fault at all that she'd been the one to break thte news. Realistically, she had just done him a favour, but he really wasn't feeling it. At all. Instead, he was simply angry with her that she'd popped his bubble.
