The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Maya winced. That was the hard part, because she had promised not to. Whatever their difference in opinion was about Aoife, Maya did not usually break her promises to her wife. She could see Becca tensed up.
>>"Okay. She's part of the Cult and she's involved with whatever crimes they have a hand in... Ah want tae see her. Where is she bein' held? SUPER?"
"No." Maya shook her head. "We didn't hand her over to anyone... she's at one of Sam's safe houses."
Okay, that sounded bad too. Maya sighed.
"I didn't go after her. Sam and I went out to... get more information, about the cult. There was this one guy, he had illusions, he fought back... and then Aoife appeared out of nowhere."
Maya turned around to look at her wife. Becca did not look upset. Yet. She looked worried, but also did not seem to believe that Maya could say something that was really that bad.
>>"Maya... we can talk about anythin, love. Ah couldnae hate ye. Ah dinnae have that in me. So tell me; what's wrong? What did Ah miss while Ah was away?"
Well, they were going to test that theory.
Maya sighed. She'd been trying to decide if she should explain first, or get the worst over with. She swallowed, and went with the latter.
Maya felt like there was a stone in the pit of her stomach. She had been trying to prepare for this conversation, but as much as she put words together, it had always been an abstract thing, sometime in the future. And now, Becca was home, and it was all reality. The weight of what had happened was dawning on Maya.
Iris finally went down for a nap. While Becca closed the bedroom door, Maya tried to gather her thoughts, and get a grip on what she had to do next. Because the longer she avoided it, the worse it was going to hit.
She felt Becca's arms around her, and took a deep breath. One last moment.
>>"Sae what have you been up to, besides missing me? Ah talk too much and want tae know what my wonderful, sexy, badass wife has been up to while Ah'm nae around."
Well, that was a sh** cue for this.
Maya closed her eyes, taking a deep breath.
"Well... I need to talk to you about something. And... you're gonna hate me for it."
>>"Ah dinnae think Ah'm rejoining for the near future. Though maybe we should ask our daughter; never had a teenage clairvoyant running around."
Maya sighed. She knew it could not be this easy. Honestly, Becca looked better, returning now, than what she had expected; apparently she did not only clear her head, but she had also been... proactive, in the magic department. That was already a huge step, even if she was not ready to talk about the team yet, she reminded herself.
>>"Come on, Maya; would Ah be letting her touch it if it wasn't safe. The charm isnae tae protect me from wee babies. Though there are three swords in there. Magic or nae, those are nae baby friendly."
Maya set Iris down with a moment of hesitation. She toddled over to poke at her reflection, giggling. At least she knew now not to run at mirrors; that had been an unfortunate side-effect of a baby being used to mirrorwalking. "Yeah, we'll need to store those somewhere." she noted with a small smile. Now that Iris was occupied for a moment, Maya leaned over to kiss her wife. "I really am glad you're back."
The tendrils were a fascinating mutation. Not necessarily combat-oriented like some others, but as a teacher, she had just gained incredible powers of observation. Of course, all powers came with drawbacks, but they could work on those. Mae seemed very much excited about being at the school, at least. Self-hatred would have been a bad trait for a teacher.
>>"I can only imagine what unexpected means in a place housing so many empowered children. Or do you refer more to the incidents that seem to permeate this city. I have not experience any of it since i have been here but the concepts of an alternate earth, ohh just to have had a brief glimpse of how their history must have diverged from our own"
"Both" Gawain chuckled, handing the chew toy back to Iris. "I mean, the other universe and the... big things, they definitely have an impact. But the day to day chaos is pretty... colorful, too."
>>"Sorry It was prolbely less fun living through it then reading about it. Prolbely more common to figure out how the refrigerator is actually running down the street or why the toilets floating on the ceiling"
"We... have had one of those things" Gawain grinned. Apparently Mae was not completely new to child-generated chaos either. And at least she had a sense of humor about it.
>>"Teleportation must be fun but gender shifting seems awkward with a child"
"Oh, she shifts sometimes too. I'll give a warning on those days, not everyone wants to get gender swapped without notice." Although a surprising number of people proved to be more than curious.
"So... Teaching here, apart from being a good place to figure out your powers. What do you think you'll like about it?"
Sam was going to kill her. Whichever way Maya's feelings would tip the scales, as much as she wanted Aoife dead, the choice was not going to be hers because Sam had apparently lost his mind. Maya had seen him angry before, she knew he had killed before, but she did not want him to do it now. Not like this.
"SAM!"
Ice shot out and captured Aoife's legs, but the rest of the attack paused in the last moment. Instead, a display of power Maya had not seen before shot up into the sky. And then it was snowing. The fight was over. Maya stared, wide-eyed, at Sam. What had she done to him?...
>>"Maya! W-would Becca want this? Will shshshe forgive ye?"
"No." Maya sighed, walking up to Aoife, still trapped by the ice. "She probably won't."
She had enough practice in knocking someone out.
"Sam. Tell me you've got a safe house that can hold a magic user."
>>"Please, at this point, being part of the X-Team has been most of our lives,"
Maya noted the wavering in Becca's smile. She had decided to... take time off from being on the X-team, but she was still not sure if the decision was final, or temporary. She wanted to ask, this and so many other things, but also did not want to go straight into that conversation.
>>"There are plenty of souveniers, babe, but not in that chest. I want to show you, though."
Maya arched an eyebrow as Becca unpacked her new shield. The moment the cover came off, Iris made an excited squeal at the reflective surface, and got up to go poke at it. She was not even two, but mirrorwalking was already a familiar experience for her. Maya picked her up before she could paw at the shield.
>>"So Cafas griped, coz I sorta blew up the first two getting the glyph wrong. BUT I finally found an orientation that channels everything right."
Maya looked at the shield. The shape was different, the surface was the same, but the use... this one was built for magic, not mutant powers. Becca had apparently made miles of progress in figuring out her new... abilities. She was still wrapping her mind around suddenly all the gaming lingo being reality, and seeing it right in the living room... that was going to need some getting used to.
>>"Ah figured if Ah could take the runes from when Ah... er, snapped or whatever, Ah could imbue my shield. If Ah have a protection charm, it makes sense to use it on something Ah can protect people with, right? Also, Ah spent a long time training with a shield. Not having one now would feel like a waste."
"That's... pretty great" Maya admitted, not sure what else to say. "Does that... mean you are back on the team?"
Iris leaned in Maya's arms, making some grabbing motions and almost hitting her in the face with an antler. Maya held the kid out at arm's length to avoid losing an eye.
Iris made some protesting sounds as she was placed on the ground, but soon occupied herself with poking at the luggage. Maya wrapped her arms around Becca, letting out a deep sigh, feeling her relax too.
>>"Good. Now ye can stop missing me. Ah'm back where Ah belong."
"I'm glad" Maya muttered, turning her head carefully to press a kiss to Becca's cheek. She really had missed her. And she seemed... better, than when she had left.
>>"Ah'm guessing our oldest isn't home yet? Ah really wish Ah could have brought her with me, but... well, unfamiliar lands and crowded airplanes were never gonna offer her the same kind of peace."
"She's still out, but I bet she'll be back as soon as she hears you're home." Kalos had been doing her own exploration. Sure, traveling with Becca would have been too much of a change, but she was taking her own small steps into a new world.
>>"How have ye been holding up without me? Ah know taking care of a roulette baby and a magical teenager is parenting hard mode."
"And we thought being on the X-team was a challenge" Maya grinned at her wife. She had settled into a good routine with the kids and work, and she did have a lot of help from others in the Mansion. But her days were definitely full.
Iris discovered, delighted, that Becca's luggage made a clanking sound. Maya chuckled, looking down. "There better be some souvenirs in there."
"Aye!" Iris giggled, watching Becca grow matching antlers. Maya smiled, watching the two of them, waiting for her turn.
>>"Maya, you're tae considerate. Next time Ah ask for time tae travel and find myself, please remind me how Ah'll just miss ye every day."
"You needed time" Maya smiled at her wife, gesturing between the three of them. "Too many antlers." Hugging both would have been an unmitigated disaster. But it was clear from her smile she was happy Becca was back. Despite the conversation she could not put off for much longer. "I missed you too."
"Mama!" Iris declared with conviction, standing at the window with her hands and nose plastered to it. Which was a feat in itself, given the two little antlers sprouting from her head.
"Yes. Mama is coming home" Maya agreed with a smile, rummaging around in the drawers for a button-down. Button-downs were essential for antler days.
"Ma!" Iris reiterated. She tried to turn to look at Maya for emphasis, but the antler bumping against the window stopped her. She made a grumpy sound and landed on her (well cushioned) butt.
Maya was just as excited, in a way. She knew Becca needed time to sort out the big change in her life, but she hated that she had to do it away from them. She understood and supported it, but she had been missing Becca. And felt helpless, not being able to contribute to the journey. Other than watching the kids, obviously, although Kalos was doing her own thing too most of the day.
She wondered if Becca had found what she had been looking for. And also tried to not think too much about the news that she had to break when she got home. She was still not sure they had done the right thing... but she also knew she could not really keep it a secret from her wife either way.
The door finally opened. Iris made the first move, working herself up onto all fours and then standing, launching across the room. "Ma!"
>>"Hello my Doubled friend. I.....no, i do not think i am, nor have i been for longer then i think i understand."
Aura, with an existential crisis. Maya put the laundry basket down. She was not equipped for any of this, but Aura, for once, looked so miserable that she needed to try.
>>"The dead of of our brothers and sisters haunt my waking moments, the rest haunt my nightmares. The mystics made me butcher thirty seven of our kind, made me use my knowledge and training to extend the pain all for a show."
Maya turned pale. "The mystics... what?"
There was a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. The mystics made... Aura hunt mutants?... Was she here because of that? Her mind went to fight mode, but Aura did not look determined to fight. She looked... broken. Words came tumbling out.
>>"The mystics control wiped the false memories clean. Everything i am, everything i have done, all i was tought, the lies of a woman who only wanted a weapon. I just kept clinging harder and harder to those teachings, they were all i knew even as evidence stacked against them. I just wanted a world, where our children would not worrey of being killed or having their birth right stolen with magic or be used as weapon devoid of understanding how to be more. I thought at the cost of my mind and soul i could save our people, it was all that ever truly mattered to me. Worse i thought those i called gods would simply asign the holy war to another, perhapse less suited to the role"
Maya did not get... most of that. She knew Aura had always been a militant pro-mutant fighter, to the level of murder, but in a twisted way, she was protective of their kind. If she really killed mutants... no wonder she looked broken. And her aura flickered, like her entire being was called into questions.
>>"I failed so badly, My actions brought super from the other world and now theses mages rise against us. I could not save the order and i could not save our people. I was just a weak willed person unable or unwilling to put herself before the holy war."
Maya sighed. She still did not know what to say.
>>"I'm sorry my old friend, i should not dump my wounds on you"
"Well... you came here." Maya noted gently "We have not always been on the best of terms, but you need help, and you came here. You trusted us with Alex. Maybe you can trust us with... helping you figure this out?"
A lot of mutations manifested through traumatic events. Gawain's own had always been active, in part, but the mirrorwalking happened during a fight. It was likely that someone who had just learned about their powers this late in life had been through some kind of a bad thing...
>>"It's ok, I was teaching and a fire broke out, it was strange though spread so fast. I was trying to guide my students through the hallway, but the smoke got to thick and... "
"Whoa!" Gawain, against his better judgment, jumped as the tendrils appeared. Iris made a squeaking sound, abandoned the chew toy, and immediately reached out with both hands to grab them. The tendrils pulled back, and Gawain caught his daughter's hand in time. Iris still seemed mesmerized by the eye-tendrils, and so did Gawain. "... sorry about that. You can... see with those?"
>>"They seem to see an the infrared spectrum, so they can see through walls, i kept them low and used them to guide us out a safe door. Their still investigating how it started and spread so fast. Their are others as well, Like another set can see like a microscope, another works like a telescope. Feels like i have worms crawling in my arms though"
"That's... impressive." A whole range of vision, though additional eyes. Yet another cool mutation.
>>"My brain seems to crave sensory information now as well but to much can knock me out"
"That's... good to know." She would probably need the training to find the limits of her abilities.
>>"Does Iris get your power when she touches you? How many students typically are here at the school a time? I'm also assuming theirs more duties then just teaching here as well"
Gawain decided to take it one question at a time.
"No, Iris has her own set of powers that she sprinkles around." he chuckled "I'm a teleporter. And a gender shifter. We have... a hundred or so students, give or take, but the numbers chance constantly. And the other duties... well. There are more of those for faculty who lives on campus. And there are also always things that come up unexpectedly..."
>> "It was never a choice. It was her fate. She was born a mutant, but magic was her birthright. It's all our birthrights."
"Curing people from something they were born with, in the name of a higher power? How very fascist of you." Maya spat. She was out of patience, and at the same time dealing with the very, very heavy implications of feeling like she could, and actually would take a kill shot at his sister-in-law.
>>"If you're really committed to not killing me, we can at least agree on that. Let's part paths here and Becca doesn't have to know we met behind her back."
She shot her. In a move she knew was going to come back to bite her in the ass, Maya released the arrow in Aoife's direction. She heard the cry of pain, which sounded real, and the vibrations of illustions. She jumped out of the mirror, and the view got worse. Aoife looked injured, but it was hard to tell what was real and what wasn't. She was fleeing either way.
"Sam!" she yelled, turning to see what had happened to Sam, who had been suspiciously quiet for long seconds now. She saw blood. Dammit. "Sam? What the f*** happened?"
>>"Hello Mr. Morissen, it is good to meet you, My name is Mae Durchdenwald, Mae will be fine out of the class room. It is really nice to be here"
"Mae. Nice to meet you. Please, take a seat." Gawain smiled as they walked into the office. Iris chose this moment to spit out the chew toy, which had the marks of her tiny but surprisingly strong canines in it. Gawain caught the flying object on reflex and handed it back to her. Iris giggled.
>>"I want to be upfront, i have had my powers less then a month ago, in a fire that occurred at the school I was teaching at. I have known i was mutant for less then a month so I don't know how qualified i am on that front, but I'm a good teacher. I'm still working out what i can do, is all i mean"
"Oh." Gawain blinked as he sat down to. Mae was... new to being a mutant. That was not an issue in the hiring process, really, but it was interesting to know. Changing your life and changing jobs at the same time... "Well, we are mostly looking for new teachers, and it seems you are qualified for that. The powers, we can help with."
Iris made some flailing motions.
>>"Must be a lively place even without a baby. How old?
"Fifteen months. This is Iris. She transfers powers by touch, so don't touch her unless you want a smile like this." he added, flashing her his own wolf-like canines. Iris giggled, hearing her name, and nommed on the chew toy. "Sooo... What exactly happened, when your powers manifested?... If you don't mind me asking."
Gawain made an exhausted sound as the comm rang and he was told his appointment had made an appearance. This was supposed to be Mrs. Taylor-Cervantes' job, but Gemma was out for the day. Still, the Mansion needed new teachers, dedicated, good people, and the faculty was taking turns interviewing them. Today, it was Mirror's turn to substitute for Gemma. Hence, and appointment with a prospective teacher, a Miss... uhhh. He did not have time to read the file.
Iris was teething. Which was a painful experience to begin with, but today, it was especially exhausting: the baby's brand new canines had turned into... actual, feral canines. And so did Gawain's, who was now getting an inkling of what it felt like to be a werewolf. He hurried down the hallway so that he could at least meet the new teacher at the office door, pretending that he was on top of... everything. Iris, in the baby carrier, was making gurgling noises and happily chewing on a dog toy.
"Helloooo" Gawain huffed, running a hand through his hair as he noticed the well-dressed young woman in front of the office. Iris, who was facing out in the baby harness, blinked at the stranger curiously. "Sorry for the wait, I'm playing catchup today." he offered a hand, after wiping it on his shirt. "Gawain Morris. Mansion faculty. Welcome to Xavier's." he opened the office door for her. "Please, make yourself at home, uh, miss...?"
