The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Once things had simmered down, and the tension was all gone, Gawain managed to work his pants back on before he collapsed back into the office chair. Adrenaline and attraction had been replaced with relaxed muscles and a sudden urge to cuddle, which was not exactly easy to do, given the setting. He ran a hand through his hair, which was sticking out in all directions, and gave Becca an amused look.
>>”Okay, ‘at was worth th’ wait. An’ nae tae take away frae our time in th’ X-Jet, but ‘at was e’en better than Ah remembered.”
"Age and experience, I guess" Gawain grinned at her, stretching his legs. There were papers and office supplies on the floor. Now that the moment had passed, he had to admit that they had not exactly been behaving in a very mature way. "We have a whole lot of cleaning up to do..."
Gawain was not sure what kind of a reaction to expect from Gwen about the gender shifting. She seemed to take it lightly; it was probably not the strangest mutation she had encountered so far. 19th century morals or not, she did not seem to have anything against a gender-shifter.
>>"Oh... That must be, well, difficult. Do you have a different name for when you are a woman?"
"Yes" Gawain smiled at the completely reasonable question "I'm called Maya on those days."
>>"You would have hated living in my time. Glass was not very common, except for the upper elites."
"Every time has its ups and downs" Gawain nodded. He was not a big believer of the olden days being better (most reenactors, contrary to popular belief, did not believe in that), and he was definitely not of the opinion that the 21st century was perfect so far. Definitely not for mutants... "May I ask what your power is? You don't have to tell if you don't want to."
Maya was still not entirely clear on how the coral nature of Kalos functioned as a mutation. She did not seem hurt or in pain with the lost bit, but it was still strange to have a piece of her just broken off in the middle of a mall. Technically, it was like losing some hair... but Maya was not sure what to do with that. She watched in fascination as the tiny blue tentacle appeared.
>>"It has no hurt. See? I can stink people so watch out! They are like baby fingers."
She took a piece of her finger off next. It was like something straight out of the Mary Poppins books... Before Maya could react, Kalos dropped the piece, and went chasing after it while some people stopped to watch.
>>"My finger!"
"Kalos!" Maya darted after the girl, managing to catch up just as the piece stopped sliding on the floor. Someone was yelling in disgust, and Maya whipped around to face them down. "Oh, f*** get over it. I have seen worse at the joke shop one floor down. Be a goddamn adult."
Celeste seemed to like the idea of teaching baking classes. Maya was all for having more pastries show up in the Mansion kitchen (even if some were a little flat or burned). And students did need to learn more than just fighting skills, or academics. Many of them did not have a family to teach them basics like how to turn an oven on.
>>"Well, you help me set up and I'm all for it. I just need, like, I don't know. Students first? And the school administrations support. Maybe I could just switch my art out for this. Maybe it'll balance my GPA out."
"I can help you with that." Maya nodded with a smile "We'll talk details later. I think it would be a good thing for everyone involved."
Rhino guy was not giving up on the chase, and therefore was in the process of creating a whole lot of property damage. Mirror just hoped they would not blame the costs on the X-men when the smoke (and glass) cleared. For now, that problem took second place to the immediate need to get away from the beast, and into a safe location, with Ami in tow. Gawain jumped from one mirror to the next, focusing on the longest possible distances, to gain some headway. And then suddenly they made a skip, and another one, and Gawain left the mirrorworld, pulling Ami behind him, and...
... and there was another Ami.
Rhinoceros mutant behind, Ami in tow, Ami ahead, and a whole lot of confusion.
This was really not something any X-man could have prepared for.
>>”Don’t get me wrong, sweetheart, you shouldn’t just be strolling in here, girl or guy, but at least things feel more appropriate this way. Plus, Skye might have a little bias,”
So, the dressing room was a girls-only space in more ways than one. Maya made a mental note about one more similarity between Alice and... Blue Haired Girl That Might Also Be Alice. She definitely felt more comfortable now that she was Maya, even though her clothes were a little off after the shift. At least the girls did not look hostile anymore. And there was booze.
>>"Yep, early night for me. Got a big event to do tomorrow and the boss wants me rested up. Are you on it two Booksy? Can't remember off the top of my head."
>>”I’m on tomorrow. The boss likes to have me around getting a buzz going on big nights,”
"A buzz?" Maya tilted her head. She'd assumed the girls were mutants of some sort, even if Alice's powers did not transfer over to her doppelganger. She did feel a little buzzed, probably from the club setting. And she would definitely accept a drink if they offered one.
>>”So do you like to dance? The mirror thing’s a nice angle and the club has guy nights and girl nights, so you could really make a killing. What’s your name, darling? I could be your reference,”
"Thanks, I've got a job already" Maya grinned "I mean, I like dancing, but mostly for my own entertainment. My job involves more punching and less flirting..."
The guy was not about to listen to Jesse, no sir. The mirrorwalker swore as Cheshire lunged into action again, trying to beat the water monster with a pipe. Just how dumb was he? Jesse blamed himself for not having the leadership charisma of her wife. Becca could scare anyone into following orders. Jesse could not, and he was still stuck in the mirrors. He had a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach as he realized he might have to watch a fellow vigilante die.
>>"Listen. This thing killed a cop. If it keeps on doing s#*t like that, we might get another registration act, sunshine. And that's something I'm never going to let happen again."
He was not wrong. But he was not right either. The cops were already on edge, not to mention SUPER, with hands itching to blame the deaths on mutants in general. And yet, this was not the way to solve the problem. Jesse did the only thing he could do: He turned to call for backup.
And then he realized he was not alone in the mirror.
"F****" he yelped, seeing the wraith-like creature so close up, and took a step back.
>>"Hello, hello. Hey there. Don't often see people on this side. Any special occasion?"
"Wha... you're a mirrorwalker?" Jesse seriously hoped this was not another doppelganger of his. The X-kid he could deal with, but a Ghost of Jesse Future... NOPE.
Who knew that the DR could be turned into a swimming pool? The place never ceased to amaze Maya. It could transform into virtually anything just by hard light and some programming skills... but even beyond that, it had hidden depths. Quite literally, in this case. After Mirror and Shin had wrecked the old mechanical structures that were likely to kill students, Maya also discovered that the room, much like the ancient Colosseum, could be sunk and flooded for aquatic training purposes. Which was great, because the trainee she had a private session with was definitely at home in water.
Maya sat at the edge of the newly created pool, dressed ins a blue swimsuit, waiting for Andy to show. The water was not pool-clear, but rather greenish and kind of murky like natural water would be. It was clean, of course... but hard light and programming was going to take care of the parts that natural resources could not. In this case, some very intriguing parts. Sam would have been proud. Maya was not sure what reaction she was going to get from the trainee... but if he had a mind to try out for the X-men, he had to learn to be ready for everything.
The suit guy went screaming through the air, and the girl on the ceiling was doing some kind of elaborate acrobatics. Honestly, Gawain was less concerned with them (the X-man at least should be able to handle herself), and more concerned with keeping Celeste safe, and possibly stopping the madness that was descending on them. Lightning, creaming, and a pack of nightmare people were not helping with that scenario.
>>"You hear that, right? I'm not going crazy?"
"One does not exclude the other at this point" Gawain frowned, hunkering down with her behind a car. F**** psychics. "But I hear it too."
>>"I think... I think they're coming after us...? That voice about not being disturbed... I think... We may have disturbed her...? We need to find Devon and the other woman that is running off... I think we need to run. Like run."
Gawain swore.
"Where is an adpted when you need one?!... Whoever's doing this has to be a mutant." he looked at Celeste as the people rushed towards them "You run. Get out of the way. Go get help. Ideally, and adapted. Or at least get the lightning guy, if he can direct that, we might win. GO!"
He pushed Celeste out of the way as the first people got to them. Not having a weapon, he punched one in the face... but by the time he tackled the second, the first one was back up, and... biting?!
"HEY!" Gawain shook his leg with the man clinging to his boot with his teeth. He used the other leg to kick someone away "You on the ceiling... little help here?"
Gawain was slowly getting a sense of who was around him (or, in the case of the other X-man, above him). None of these people were responsible for the darkness or the creeping sense of danger, however. And none of them were professionals. Celeste at least certainly wasn't.
>>"Yeah, I'm here for a Halloween party too."
Go figure. Gawain wanted to make sure to get the Mansions student home safe at least.
>>"You know Impact?"
"Yeah" Gawain nodded "My doppelganger's married to her..."
It was weird to say it like that. Apparently, two whole universes colliding still constituted a surprisingly small world.
Small, dark, and windy. The well-dressed guy was apparently losing patience, and with that losing control of whatever wind-related powers he had. Gawain frowned as things started to rattle and lightning and thunder rumbled above.
>>"Devon, don't, we need to stick together... We don't know wh-- Gawain, we need to figure something out. Something isn't right."
"I'm aware" Gawain frowned, peerign into the darkness where the sounds of many people... people?... came from in a crazed frenzy, and kept getting closer.
>>"Nothing says "I'm an adult who's in control of my issues" like a man throwing a hissy fit in a parking garage and causing unnecessary property damage."
"Why, how the hell else do you people celebrate Halloween with the X-team?" Gawain snapped back, too preoccupied to smirk. He was unnerved by the sounds and the wind and... the woman on the ceiling doing whatever she was doing until she fell to the floor. "What the..."
People moved past, but they did not pay much attention to the 19th century lady and the young guy sitting on the bench with her. Gwen was being surprisingly open about herself, her story, and her past.
>>"Yes, I am. In my time, we viewed people with these mutations as demons, or possessed by some manner of evil spirit. I am glad the world has slightly moved away from that way of thinking. It was not a good way to view the world. Lots of people who had these mutations were probably killed... It was the time."
"It got a little better than that" Gawain frowned, trying not to think of mutants being murdered so close in history that Gwen could still remember "But there's still a long way to go." In an age of META bots and registration acts, it was hard work to make sure history did not move backwards.
>>"And yourself? You must be a mutant as well since you work at this school?"
She turned the question back before she told him what her powers were. That left Gawain wondering, but he also did not mind answering first.
"Yes, I am" he nodded "I can walk through mirrors... kind of like teleporting. Also, I change into a woman every other day."
To tell the truth, Gawain was kind of curious how Victorian sensibilities were going to handle that...
Gawian stayed still as Ravi worked. He glanced at the design sometimes, trying to imagine it on his own skin. It was going to look cool... And hopefully stick even through the shifting. The conversation was not exactly flowing, but at least they were not in awkward silence anymore.
>>”Doppelgangers, huh? Did you meet your own? How similar were they?... And what’s the other side like?”
"Some are pretty different" Gawain admitted "Same face and different powers... or same powers but different face... sometimes it's hard to tell. It is very similar and freaky at the same time. Like, not different enough to be sci-fi, just... disturbing."
Maya watched Kalos hesitate. Technically, they had enough clothes that fit her to hold them over till she worked up the courage for shopping again. And there was definitely nothing that was going to top the sequin sweater today. Or this week. Kalos put it on with such enthusiasm that she even broke a piece of coral off. Maya picked it up.
>>"There are too many things that you have bought already. I cannot let you buy more, my sister Maya."
"Food it is then" Maya smiled.
>>"This is my favorite."
It was good to see Kalos happy. Maya smiled and put an arm around her shoulder. She held up the coral piece.
"Are you going to miss this? It doesn't hurt, does it?"
Becca seemed very sure about her decisions. Gawain was not exactly resisting either. The office was probably not the place, but they were not going to worry about that now. If anyone had a problem, they could worry about it later.
>>”Ah’ve been waitin’ impatiently since Atlantis. Ur ye really gonna make me wait longer?”
"No ma'am" Gawain grinned as he leaned closer "You're the one running the mission."
She was the boss in Atlantis, and since technically they were still working on Atlantis... He was not gonna say no. Not that he wanted to.
>>”Naeain’s still up. We’ll catch way mair looks if Ah’m snoggin’ ye through th’ halls.”
"Snogging sounds good" Gawain chuckled, before they exactly that.
Gawain could still hear no chanting, but if the others did, it was entirely possible that it was there. Even more so if it was a psychic of some sort. Would have been nice not to be on the receiving end of a psychic attack for once... Gawain frowned as Celeste joined him.
>>"What in the world are you guys doing here...?"
"I was on my way to a Halloween party. As usual. And I ran into this" Gawain gestured at the darkness surrounding them "As usual. Happens every freaking time..."
The girl above them was getting testy.
>>"I'm an X-man"
"Yeah you and me both" Gawain frowned looking up. Unless Sam recruited the chick while Mirror was not looking, she was either lying, or... "Are you from the other side? Impact's team?"
